Senior School Co-Curricular Clubs and Activities

LENT TERM 2025

St. Edmund’s offers pupils a wide range of co-curricular clubs and activities. These may be sporting, artistic, dramatic, creative, musical or cultural in nature and are led by our energetic and committed teaching staff.

The choice of clubs varies each term and pupils are encouraged to be involved in a broad range of activities to explore new opportunities and try new things.

All clubs and activities are open to both boys and girls unless otherwise indicated.

DANCE AND DRAMA

Production Rehearsals (Forms 9-11)

AUDITION

For children taking part in a school production, Production Rehearsals take place after school giving children valuable time to rehearse with the Drama and Music departments.

ENRICHMENT

Chess Club (Forms 9-11)

Chess Club is run throughout the year with sessions on Tuesdays in the Michaelmas term aimed specifically at beginners, with Thursday sessions offered to more proficient pupils who just want to play against a variety of opponents.

Each session begins with a teaching aspect looking at topics such as; ‘how the pieces move’, ‘castling, hanging pieces’, ‘defending’, ‘basic opening’s and ‘end games’. Pupils then have time to play each other.

In the Lent term we run the St. Edmund’s Chess Championships and in the Summer term, both sessions (Tuesdays and Thursdays) are available to pupils of all ages and abilities on the proviso that they have a registered account with Chess.com. This does not need to be the paid for premium version but can be the basic free version.

Pupils will have the option to play virtually against bots or on-line live matches and will also have the opportunity to play on the physical boards.

Crochet Club (Forms 9-11)

Crochet Club gives the pupils a place of tranquility, peace and refuge. It allows them to learn a skill that provides them with a sense of purpose, whether that’s understanding how to do a double crochet or how to piece together a toy animal!

Dungeons & Dragons

(Forms 9-11)

Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy roleplaying game which has become a hugely popular mainstream hobby in recent years. It is an immersive game which offers players an opportunity to act out a character and journey through imaginary adventures narrated by a Dungeon Master. Not only does it encourage imagination, it also develops collaboration and problem-solving skills as the players have to work together to overcome traps, fight monsters and navigate social encounters with non-player characters (NPCs).

Jewellery Making Club

(Forms 9-11)

Pupils can relax and get creative by making earrings, bracelets, and necklaces in a calm and chilled atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to unwind, make something special for Christmas or thoughtful gifts for loved ones - all while supporting health and wellbeing.

Journalism Club (Forms

9-11)

Journalism Club provides pupils with the opportunity to try a variety of skills. This could be copywriting, editing, photography, and interviewing. Pupils work together on topics for that term; they are taught to be bold with their questioning, creative with their writing and collaborative with their team to get the job done.

ENRICHMENT

Maths Challenge Club

(Forms 9-11)

Recommended for anyone who enjoys maths and wants to push themselves a bit further. The Maths Challenge Club is a competition organised by www.UKMT. org.uk, which focuses on intriguing math questions and problem-solving.

In the club, pupils practice questions from past competitions and collaborate to discover elegant solutions to these problems. Pupils have one hour to solve 25 questions, although typically around 10 correct answers will earn them a certificate. Bronze, silver and gold certificates will be awarded to those who perform sufficiently well.

Psychology Club

(Forms 9-11)

The Senior Psychology Club provides a unique platform for Senior pupils to dive deeper into the world of Psychology. Open to all Senior School pupils who have with an interest in understanding human behaviour, the club offers an engaging environment to explore topics such as cognition, emotion, mental health, and social influences.

This club not only supports those considering Psychology as a future field of study but also provides valuable insights into human behaviour that benefits a variety of academic and personal pursuits.

STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) (Forms 9-11)

STEM club is a chance for keen scientists to expand their horizons and explore the power of the scientific method. All pupils in Form 9 undertake the Bronze CREST award from the BSA, British Science Association, as part of their curriculum. At STEM Club pupils can advance to the next level and complete the Silver Award. This takes at least 30 hours to complete but involves pupils having a wide range of freedom in what projects they undertake and the opportunity to link with outside mentors. Pupils can study topics well outside the standard curriculum in any STEM area.

Warhammer (Forms 9-11)

Warhammer Club is dedicated to the tabletop war games produced by Games workshop. Pupils build, paint and play with armies set in the fantasy and sci-fi worlds of Warhammer. Most club sessions are dominated by what participants call ‘the hobby’, the building and painting of the various infantry, tanks, and monsters but pupils also take part in casual games, senior run leagues and painting competitions. Many pupils have a favourite faction they play for years and enjoy the rich backstory shared across magazines, books and videos.

Pupils can purchase Warhammer direct from Warhammer stores and online, but free starters are given to us as a registered Warhammer Alliance school. Community paints and brushes are available to help pupils get started.

MUSIC

Senior Girls Choir (Forms 9-11)

AUDITION

This choir is a space for Senior girls to refine their vocal skills and explore an exciting repertoire of contemporary and traditional music. With a focus on blend, technique, and artistry, the Senior Girls Choir is perfect for fostering community and confidence.

Voce Volantes Boys’ Choir (Forms 9-11)

Voces Volantes, meaning “Flying Voices”, provides Senior boys with an opportunity to excel in ensemble singing. The choir specialises in a mix of traditional and contemporary male-voice repertoire, enhancing vocal technique and musicianship during a crucial phase of vocal development.

Senior Mixed Voices Choir (Forms 9-11)

The Mixed Voices Choir at St Edmund’s School offers pupils an inspiring platform to explore a wide range of choral repertoire, from classical masterpieces to contemporary arrangements. Open to all voice types, the choir fosters teamwork, musicality, and vocal development, creating memorable performances and a sense of community among its members.

Orchestra (Forms 9-11)

Orchestra Club invites Intermediate to Advanced instrumentalists in Forms 9-11 to collaborate on diverse repertoire spanning classical, film, and popular music. Weekly rehearsals focus on ensemble skills, musicality, and performance readiness for concerts and school events.

Rock Band (Forms 9-11)

Senior pupils passionate about contemporary music, the Rock Band is a space to explore rock, pop, and indie genres. Members sharpen their skills on instruments or vocals, collaborating to rehearse and perform high-energy music for school and community events.

SPORT AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Boys’ Gym Club (Forms 9-11)

Pupils can take part in a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) group warm-up exercise, before completing their own training programme with weights and/or cardio machines under guidance. The session offers Senior pupils an opportunity to let off some steam, while benefitting from an endorphin hit! It also provides a safe space to talk about their week with their peers.

Basketball (Forms 9-11)

As one of our fastest growing sports, our Basketball Club sessions look to improve dribbling, shooting and passing skills, along with fitness to get up and down the court.

Boys’ Hockey (Forms 9-11)

This club is aimed predominantly at those children who wish to apply the skills learnt in lessons to structured match play.

Boys’ Rugby (Forms

9-11)

This club will look to develop the structural and handling skills of the rugby teams, looking at attacking play and how to create space. It is open to all abilities and will be split into Prep and Senior School sessions.

Boys’ Team Games

(Forms 9-11)

Open to boys of all abilities who are keen to participate in sport. This club will look at the full range of sports that pupils usually play for matches but also some different sports such as handball and Tchoukball.

Girls’ Football

(Forms 9-11)

During Girls’ Football Club, the girls learn to develop and hone their skills. Match play is greatly encouraged during which there are great opportunities to socialise with other girls in different year groups and develop friendships. There are plenty of opportunities for girls to improve tactically as well as technically.

SPORT AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Girls’ Netball (Forms 9-11)

Netball Club will develop the skills learnt during games lessons such as shooting, intercepting, and applying to match play.

Golf Club* (Forms 9-11)

Steve Clay is the Professional at Blackmoor Golf Club where he has been “The Pro” for 32 years. He not only coaches golf to all ages and abilities, but also runs a wellstocked Pro Shop and is heavily involved with the organisation of everything “Golf” at the club.

He has been teaching and introducing the game of golf to pupils one day a week at St. Edmund’s for the past 24 years. During this time, he has set 100’s of children on the right path and the correct fundamentals that will enable them to enjoy this great game all their lives.

Run Club (Forms 9-11)

Children at St. Ed’s learn, develop and achieve great things from running - to qualifying for County or even Regional cross-country. ALL abilities are welcome.

In Run Club you will expect to learn about how to demonstrate an effective, running specific warm up, develop technique through drills, pacing yourself, interval training, speed and endurance training all while having fun!

Shred Club* (Forms 9-11)

B1KE offers industry leading MTB coaching at St. Edmund’s; using their very own mini-bikepark facility - complete with berms, rollers and progressive jumps.

During Shred sessions pupils work on the ‘Core Skills’ required to successfully navigate the modern MTB world, no matter the ability level or age. Further details on B1KE and their mission can be found at www.B1KE.com

Sports Culture (Forms 9-11)

Sports Culture focuses on the different sports that are favoured around the world and allows pupils to learn about the different rules and tactics. These include a range of sports such as American Football, Kabaddi and Australian Rules among others.

SPORT AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Strong Girls (Forms

9-11)

Strong Girls is a Senior Girls sports club that gives them the opportunity to take part in different types of fitness including weight training, interval training and HIIT (high intensity internal training).

Sports Scholar Training

(Forms 9-11)

INVITATION ONLY

These sessions are an opportunity for our Sports Scholars to access specialist coaching as well as one-to-one tuition. The training ill improve core skills, speed, agility and cardiovascular fitness.

Swim Squad

- Intermediate and Advanced (Forms 9-11)

In the Intermediate squad, pupils will develop their strokes and learn the complexities of breathing, turning and diving.

Advanced swim squad will teach swimmers how to read sets and learn independently.

All swimmers are assessed when they join a squad to ensure they are in the correct squad according to their swimming ability.

Tennis Club* (Forms 9-11)

Go Tennis provides tennis coaching for St. Edmund’s pupils in Forms 3 to 11. Sessions take place at Grayshott Tennis Club during the allocated games session on Fridays during term time and are taken by LTA qualified coaches. Forms 5 to 8 have a maximum of 12 children per group and lessons are structured to ensure that tennis is taught using the correct balls, rackets and on court sizes that are suitable for the age of the player. Lessons will cover technique and tactical aspects of tennis through drills, games and match practice.
