IF you work for a midsize or large company, you may soon be able to review your employee benefits package, as we are entering the open enrollment season. So, consider your options carefully, with an eye toward making changes appropriate for your needs.
Here are some of the key areas to look at:
• Retirement plan – Depending on your employer, you could change your 401(k) or similar retirement plan at any time of the year, but you might want to use the open enrollment season to review your contribution amounts. If your salary has gone up over the past year, you might want to boost your pre-tax contributions (including catch-up contributions beginning at age 50). At a minimum, try to put in at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. At the same time, look over how your contributions are allocated among the various investment options in your plan. You’ll want your investment mix to reflect your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.
• Life insurance – If your employer offers group life insurance at no cost as an employee benefit, you may want to take it – but be aware that it might not be enough to fully protect your family should anything happen to you. You may have heard that you need about seven to 10 times your annual income as a life insurance death benefit, but there’s really no one right answer for everyone. Instead, you should evaluate various factors — including your mortgage, your income, your spouse’s income (if applicable), your liabilities, the number of years until your retirement, number of children and their future educational needs — to determine how
much insurance you need. If your employer’s group policy seems insufficient, you may want to consider adding some outside overage.
• Disability insurance – Your employer may offer no-cost group disability insurance, but as is the case with life insurance, it might not be sufficient to adequately protect your income in case you become temporarily or permanently disabled. In fact, many employersponsored disability plans only cover a short period, such as five years, so to gain longer coverage up to age 65, you may want to look for a separate personal policy. Disability policies vary widely in premium costs and benefits, so you’ll want to do some comparison shopping with several insurance companies.
• Flexible spending account – A flexible spending account (FSA) lets you contribute up to $3,200 pre-tax dollars to pay for some out-of-pocket medical costs, such as prescriptions and insurance copayments and deductibles. You decide how much you want to put into your FSA, up to the 2025 limit. You generally must use up the funds in your FSA by the end of the calendar year, but your employer may grant you an extension of 2½ months or allow you to carry over up to $640.
• Health savings account – Like an FSA, a health savings account (HSA) lets you use pre-tax dollars to pay out-of-pocket medical costs. Unlike an FSA, though, your unused HSA contributions will carry over to the next year. Also, an
HSA allows you take withdrawals, though they may be assessed a 10% penalty. To contribute to an HSA, you need to participate in a highdeductible health insurance plan.
Make the most of your benefits package — it can be a big part of your overall financial picture.
Sharpe Recognized at 27th Annual Tucson Metro Chamber’s Copper Cactus Awards Ceremony
JEREMY SHARPE, Managing Partner of Rancho Sahuarita, has been named the winner of the Tucson Metro Chamber’s prestigious CopperPoint Small Business Leader of the Year award, as part of the 27th annual Copper Cactus Awards.
The awards, which recognize outstanding businesses and nonprofits throughout Southern Arizona, celebrate the organizations that are driving job growth, innovation, and that are making positive impacts on the greater community. Sharpe was one of three finalists in the category, which serves to recognize the contributions of business owners who demonstrate productivity in sales, expansion, organizational growth and influence; are actively engaged in daily operations, routinely demonstrate “creativity and innovation in anticipating and responding to changing business conditions,” and are substantially active in community service.
Sharpe, who also serves as President of Sharpe and Associates Inc., oversees the teams responsible for the development of the award-winning master planned community of Rancho Sahuarita. The 3,000acre development currently boasts over 6,100 homes with over 20,000 residents, and is also home to over 1 million square feet of existing and future retail, restaurant, medical and mixed-use commercial.
With a people-first approach to development, Sharpe leads the Rancho Sahuarita team in bridging the gap between the built environment and community connection. Inspired by the memory and vision initially set forth by his father, Rancho Sahuarita’s late founder, Bob Sharpe, Jeremy now leads the charge in developing the reminder of the master plan. Collectively he oversees the many sides of the business, including residential and commercial land development, HOA management, a water company and more.
Jeremy Sharpe has been a beacon of strategic foresight and patient leadership for the company and community. “Jeremy Sharpe’s leadership at Rancho Sahuarita exemplifies the
core values of this award – honest leadership, clear vision, and a strong company identity,” says Martin Pham, Development Associate for Rancho Sahuarita. “His impact goes beyond company metrics, fostering a culture that empowers individuals to grow alongside the organization.”
In addition to managing the thriving family business behind Rancho Sahuarita, Sharpe has always made time for an extensive and productive civic life. Currently, he serves as a board member for the Banner Health Foundation, where he helped to lead the effort to fund the building of the $3,000,000 Play Zone at Diamond Children’s Medical Center.
He is also a board member of the Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona. Civically, he is engaged in the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, Sun Corridor inc., and other industry related associations, and is a 2024 Board Member for the Southern Arizona Homebuilders Association (SAHBA).
Sharpe shared “I’m so honored and humbled to have been recognized as this year’s CopperPoint Small Business Leader of the Year. I want to congratulate all of the other nominees and award recipients for the amazing work they do within Southern Arizona. We have an incredible team who this award goes to - I could not have done it without them!”

Here are some highlighted celestial events and objects to observe in the night sky during October 2024:
• October 2 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 18:51 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.
• October 2 - Annular Solar Eclipse. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is too far away from the Earth to completely cover the Sun. This results in a ring of light around the darkened Moon. The Sun's corona is not visible during an annular eclipse. The eclipse path will begin in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America and move across parts of southern Chile and Argentina. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout most of southern South America.
• October 7 - Draconids Meteor Shower. The Draconids is a minor meteor shower producing only about 10 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet 21P Giacobini-Zinner, which was first discovered in 1900. The Draconids is an unusual shower in that the best viewing is in the early evening instead of early morning like most other showers. The shower runs annually from October 6-10 and peaks this year on the night of the 7th. The second quarter moon will ensure dark skies in the early evening for what could be a good show. If you are patient, you may still be able to catch
mile until you reach White House Canyon Road.
• Turn right onto White House Canyon Road (which becomes Madera Canyon Road) and continue for approximately 13 miles into Madera Canyon.
2. Arriving at the Trailhead:
• Once in Madera Canyon, you will pass several picnic areas and trailheads.
• For the Nature Trail, park at the Proctor Parking Area near the lower canyon entrance.
• The trail begins just beyond the parking area, with clear signage directing you onto the Nature Trail.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Hike:
• Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks.
• Keep an eye out for birds, as Madera Canyon is one of the top birdwatching spots in the U.S.
• There are restrooms and picnic areas near the trailhead, so it’s a great spot to pack a picnic for the family.
• This hike is perfect for families, with a manageable distance and beautiful views of nature!
a few good ones. The best viewing will be in the early evening from a dark location far away from city lights. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Draco but can appear anywhere in the sky.
• October 17 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 11:28 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Hunters Moon because at this time of year the leaves are falling, and the game is fat and ready to hunt. This moon has also been known as the Travel Moon and the Blood Moon. This is also the second of three supermoons for 2024. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.
• October 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Halley, which has been known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from October 2 to November 7. The shower peaks this year on the night of October 21 and the morning of October 22. The waning gibbous moon will block out most of the fainter meteors this year. But if you are patient, you should still be able to catch a few good ones. The best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Orion but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Ingredients:
1 small butternut squash (peeled, seeded, and cut into small cubes)
2 tablespoons olive oil (divided)
4 cups vegetable broth (or chicken broth)
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 ½ cups Arborio rice (or another risotto rice)
½ cup dry white wine (optional)
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (plus more for garnish)
2 tablespoons butter
6-8 fresh sage leaves (chopped) Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
Roast the Butternut Squash: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Toss the butternut squash cubes with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast for 20-25 minutes, or until the squash is tender and slightly caramelized. Set aside.
Prepare the Risotto:
In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable broth over low heat. Keep it warm on the stove. In a large skillet or pot, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until it becomes soft and translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.
Cook the Rice:
Add the Arborio rice to the pot with the onions and garlic, stirring for about 2 minutes to lightly toast the rice. Pour in the white wine (if using) and cook, stirring frequently, until the liquid is absorbed.
Add Broth Gradually:
Begin adding the warm broth to the rice, one ladleful at a time, stirring constantly. Allow the liquid to absorb before adding more. Continue this process for about 18-20 minutes, until the rice is creamy and al dente. You may not need all the broth.
Stir in Butternut Squash and Sage:
Once the rice is cooked, gently stir in the roasted butternut squash and chopped sage leaves.
Add the butter and Parmesan cheese, stirring until everything is well combined and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve: Serve the risotto hot, garnished with extra Parmesan cheese and a few whole sage leaves for presentation.

Instructions:
Optional: Rim the Glass:
In a small dish, mix ground cinnamon and sugar.

Shake the Cocktail:
In a cocktail shaker, combine the bourbon, apple cider, lemon juice, and maple syrup. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well chilled.
Serve:
Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and apple slices.
EVERY year on October 1st, cookie lovers across the U.S. celebrate National Homemade Cookie Day. It’s a day dedicated to baking and enjoying homemade cookies, one of the most beloved and nostalgic treats in American homes. For many, the smell of freshly baked cookies brings back childhood memories, family gatherings, and cozy afternoons spent in the kitchen. But how did National Homemade Cookie Day come about? Let’s explore the history behind this celebration, how cookie trends have evolved over the years, and the vast variety of cookies that exist today.
While the exact origins of National Homemade Cookie Day remain somewhat of a mystery, the holiday likely stems from a broader movement to celebrate home cooking, baking, and traditional recipes. Throughout the 20th century, as industrialized food production increased and mass-produced cookies became widely available, there was a growing cultural shift to preserve the art of homemade baking. Baking cookies at home became a cherished activity, not only for the taste but also for the love and care that goes into the process.
The holiday encourages people to slow down, return to their kitchens, and bake homemade cookies using recipes that might have been passed down through generations. It’s a celebration of both tradition and creativity in the kitchen, and a time to share the joy of freshly baked treats with loved ones.
The history of cookies dates back centuries, with early versions resembling hard biscuits that were easy to store and carry during long travels. Over time, these evolved into softer, sweeter versions, becoming the cookies we know and love today. However, the types of cookies have drastically changed and diversified over the years, especially in America.
1. Early Cookies (18th and 19th Century): In the 1700s and 1800s, cookies in America were often simple and based on European recipes. The traditional gingerbread cookie and sugar cookies were popular during colonial times. These cookies had few ingredients but were spiced or flavored with molasses, nuts, or cinnamon.
2. The Birth of Chocolate Chip Cookies (1930s): The invention of the chocolate chip cookie is credited to Ruth Wakefield in the 1930s at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. This cookie revolutionized the world of baking, and today, it remains one of the most popular homemade cookie types.
3. Post-War Cookie Boom (1940s-1960s): After World War II, cookies became a household staple in America, particularly for holiday baking. The snickerdoodle, oatmeal raisin, and peanut butter cookies became widely loved during this time. These cookies were typically made with pantry staples, making them accessible to families everywhere.
4. The Expansion of Flavors (1980s-Present): In more recent decades, cookie flavors have expanded exponentially. Double chocolate, white chocolate macadamia, mint chocolate, red velvet, and pumpkin spice are just a few examples of how cookie-making has evolved. Home bakers today experiment with unique ingredients, including sea salt, exotic spices, and even savory elements like bacon. Additionally, dietary trends have given rise to gluten-free, vegan, and low-sugar cookie variations.
It’s almost impossible to count exactly how many cookie variations exist today. Every region, culture, and even household has its own take on the classic cookie. Globally, there are hundreds of unique cookie types, from French macarons to Italian biscotti, Mexican wedding cookies, and German Lebkuchen.
In the U.S. alone, bakers have crafted an endless variety of cookies based on different flavors, textures, and shapes. There are probably thousands of variations, with new combinations being created every day. Thanks to the internet and social media, cookie recipes and ideas spread quickly, fueling creativity in kitchens around the world.
Despite the vast range of cookie types and the endless possibilities, the chocolate chip cookie remains the undisputed king of cookies. Surveys and sales data consistently show that it’s the most popular cookie in America. Its perfect balance of chewy, crispy, sweet, and slightly salty flavors makes it a universal favorite. Whether baked fresh at home or bought from a store, chocolate chip cookies bring comfort and joy to people of all ages.
Interestingly, the simplicity of the chocolate chip cookie also allows for endless
customization. People experiment by adding nuts, caramel, different types of chocolate, or even stuffing them with marshmallows or candies. Yet, at its core, the original Toll House chocolate chip recipe remains timeless. Baking cookies at home is about more than just satisfying a sweet tooth. It’s a way to connect with family, carry on traditions, and experiment with new flavors. On National Homemade Cookie Day, families are encouraged to:
1. Bake Together: Involve kids and other family members in the baking process. It’s a great way to bond and teach younger generations the joy of cooking from scratch.
2. Experiment with New Recipes: Whether trying a classic cookie or something more adventurous, this day is the perfect time to explore new recipes or revisit old favorites.
3. Share with Friends and Neighbors: Homemade cookies are meant to be shared. Take the opportunity to spread sweetness to neighbors, coworkers, or loved ones.
National Homemade Cookie Day is a heartwarming celebration that honors the joy of baking cookies from scratch. From the simplicity of early sugar cookies to the modern-day variations that cater to every taste and dietary preference, cookies have evolved over the centuries but continue to hold a special place in our kitchens and hearts. So, whether you're baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin, or trying a new inventive recipe, October 1st is the perfect time to indulge in homemade goodness and share the love with others.
