Tips for Pet Safety during Thanksgiving

Brought to you by VCA Valley Animal Hospital

TURKEY with all the fixings, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie— we look forward to these delicious Thanksgiving dishes all year! With so many tasty treats to tempt our pets, it’s not surprising that our holiday feasts cause the majority of

Thanksgiving-related pet emergencies.

The most common Thanksgiving dangers usually come in one of a few flavors:

• Toxic foods: Our culinary masterpieces can

sometimes hide ingredients that are poisonous to pets, like chocolate, grapes, raisins, currents, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and artificial sweeteners like xylitol.

• Fatty foods: Butter, meat drippings, gravies, dark turkey meat and other fatty foods can cause gastrointestinal upset (diarrhea and vomiting). Worse yet, fatty foods can cause inflammation of the pancreas, a condition known as pancreatitis, which may require hospitalization.

• Obstructive foods: Bones, corncobs and twine from trussing the turkey may get stuck in the digestive tract, potentially requiring surgical removal. Yeast dough is also problematic, not only expanding dangerously in the stomach, but the alcohol from fermenting yeast is rapidly absorbed into your pet’s bloodstream, resulting in alcohol poisoning, posing a double danger.

• Decorations: Floral arrangements may contain flowers that are toxic to pets. Each plant can pose a different danger for different species. Some lilies may range from nontoxic to dangerous for dogs, most varieties can be deadly for cats—even the vase water and pollen can result in severe, acute kidney failure. Candles can also result in burns or get accidentally knocked over.

Are your heirs ready to receive an inheritance?

In the popular imagination, receiving an inheritance always sounds like a good thing — after all, who doesn’t want a financial windfall? And inheritances can certainly be life-altering events. But they can cause challenges, so you’ll want to help your heirs be prepared.

To assist in this preparation, try to address some key questions affecting your heirs:

• Do they know what’s in your estate plans? Your family and other heirs will be much better prepared to deal with an inheritance if they know what to expect. That’s why it’s so important that you share your estate plans with everyone involved. You need to let them know the wishes and decisions you’ve expressed in your will and other legal arrangements, such as a living trust. Of course, sharing this information doesn’t necessarily mean that all your heirs will be completely satisfied with your choices — but at least they won’t be surprised, and perhaps will be less likely to cause disputes when the time comes to settle your estate.

• Will they know what to do with the money or other assets? You may be planning to leave your grown children a sizable amount of assets, possibly including cash, stocks, real estate, IRAs, 401Ks or other types of valuable personal property. But this inheritance brings with it several possible questions: Do your heirs already have an investment platform ready to accept inherited stocks? If you do leave behind rental property or a vacation home, can it be easily sold? These types of issues are generally not hard to resolve, but the more prepared your

heirs are for their inheritance, the quicker they can take whatever actions are needed.

• Are they prepared to handle any taxes that may result from the inheritance? Unless you have a very large estate, your heirs likely won’t face federal estate taxes. (In 2024, the first $13.61 million of an estate is exempt from federal estate taxes.) However, other types of taxes may apply. A few states assess state inheritance taxes, and your heirs could incur federal and/or state income taxes when they withdraw money from inherited assets funded with pretax dollars, such as some retirement accounts. They could also face capital gains taxes when they sell inherited assets, such as stocks, for more than they were worth at the time of the inheritance. In any case, inheritancerelated taxes can be complex, so you and your family and other heirs should discuss these issues with your tax advisor.

• Will they be liable for any outstanding expenses? If you have developed a comprehensive estate plan, it's unlikely your heirs will be on the hook for any outstanding expenses, such as credit card balances or funeral costs. If you do still carry a mortgage, though, and you are planning on leaving your house to your heirs, they may want to be prepared to act quickly to sell it.

When leaving an inheritance, there’s a lot involved — emotionally, financially and legally. So, do whatever you can to make the entire process as

easy as possible for your loved ones. By communicating your wishes regarding the inheritance, and by considering all the issues that may arise, you can go a long way toward achieving the outcomes you desire.

Wounded U.S. Army Veteran to Receive Specially Adapted Home in Rancho Sahuarita

MEMBERS of Rancho Sahuarita joined with longtime community homebuilder, Lennar, and non-profit organization, “Helping a Hero” on October 1st to celebrate the groundbreaking of an adaptive home for U.S. Army veteran Sergeant Tanner House. The home is part of the Helping a Hero 100 Homes Challenge, and has been specially adapted to meet his unique mobility needs following a severe spinal injury sustained during his military service in Afghanistan.

Sergeant House, who was injured during a resupply mission, has faced numerous challenges in his transition to civilian life, including homelessness. His new threebedroom, two-bathroom home will be fully equipped with wider doorways, a roll-in shower, and other accessibility modifications. This home will provide him with the freedom to live independently and safely while continuing his personal mission to help fellow veterans heal through outdoor activities.

"This home is a dream come true," said Sergeant House.

"We are deeply honored to welcome Sergeant Tanner House to our community. His story of resilience and dedication to his fellow veterans is inspiring, and we are proud to be part of this effort to provide him with a home where he can thrive,” said Jeremy Sharpe, Managing Partner of Rancho Sahuarita. “This partnership with Lennar and Helping a Hero exemplifies our shared commitment to creating a community that supports and celebrates our veterans."

"Tanner's courage, both in and out of uniform, exemplifies the resilience of our nation's veterans. It is our honor to provide him with this adaptive home, and we are deeply grateful to Lennar, Bass Pro Shops, and Patryot Charities for their support in making this

home a reality," said Meredith Lier, Founder of the Helping a Hero Home Program.

The Helping a Hero 100 Homes Challenge, led by Johnny Morris, Founder of Bass Pro Shops, invites individuals and businesses to “support building adapted homes for wounded veterans of the Post-9/11 Global War on Terror”. Sergeant House’s new home in Rancho Sahuarita is a step in achieving this goal, offering him the stability and independence he deserves.

NOVEMBER 2024

Here are some highlighted celestial events and objects to observe in the night sky during November 2024:

• November 1 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 12:49 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• November 4, 5 - Taurids Meteor Shower. The Taurids is a longrunning minor meteor shower producing only about 5-10 meteors per hour. It is unusual that it consists of two separate streams. The first is produced by dust grains left behind by Asteroid 2004 TG10. The second stream is produced by debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. The shower runs annually from September 7 to December 10. It peaks this year on the night of November 4. The first quarter moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year. If you are patient, you may still be able to catch a few good ones. The best time to view will be just after midnight from a dark location far away from city lights. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Taurus but can appear anywhere in the sky.

• November 15 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 21:30 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Beaver Moon because this was the time of year to set the beaver traps before the swamps and rivers froze. It has also been known as the Frosty Moon and the Dark Moon. This is also the last of three

1. From Tucson:

Head south on I-19 towards Green Valley.

Take Exit 63 for Continental Road.

Turn left (east) on Continental Road and follow signs to Madera Canyon.

Park at the Madera Canyon Recreation Area.

Start the hike at the Old Baldy Trailhead.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Hike:

• Plan Ahead: Research the trail and check weather conditions before heading out.

• Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water and sip regularly to prevent dehydration.

• Wear Appropriate Footwear: Choose sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good grip and support.

• Start Early: Begin your hike early to avoid the midday heat and ensure you have plenty of daylight.

• Pack Light, but Smart: Carry essentials like sunscreen, snacks, a first aid kit, and a map or GPS.

supermoons for 2024. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

• November 16 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches the greatest eastern elongation of 22.5 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset.

• November 17 - Uranus at Opposition. The blue-green planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view Uranus. Due to its distance, it will only appear as a tiny bluegreen dot in all but the most powerful telescopes.

• November 17, 18 - Leonids Meteor Shower. The Leonids is an average shower, producing up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak. This shower is unique in that it has a cyclonic peak about every 33 years where hundreds of meteors per hour can be seen. That last of these occurred in 2001. The Leonids are produced by dust grains left behind by comet Tempel-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1865. The shower runs annually from November 6-30. It peaks this year on the night of the 17th and the morning of the 18th. Unfortunately, the nearly full moon will block all but the brightest meteors this year. If you are patient, you may still be able to catch a few good ones. The best time to view it will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Leo but can appear anywhere in the sky.

A Beacon of Support in Southern Arizona: DAV Chapter 38 Earns Recognition for Outstanding Service

IT is often said that the weight of service carries over long after the uniform comes off. Critical organizations and resources for the nation’s veterans, such as the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 38 in Southern Arizona, understand this journey intimately.

Dedicated to serving veterans in Sahuarita and Green Valley, this chapter's phenomenal impact on the local community recently culminated in a prestigious recognition – the DAV Department of Arizona Chapter of the Year Award.

This award speaks volumes about the positive influence Chapter 38 has on veterans' lives. With nearly 20 million veterans nationwide, each grappling with unique post-service challenges, organizations like DAV play a critical role in facilitating a smooth transition to civilian life. Chapter 38, under the exceptional leadership of Commander Ron Bryant, has established itself as a haven of support and camaraderie.

While the primary mission is to support disabled veterans, Chapter 38 welcomes all veterans who served the country with honor – believing a strong support network benefits everyone. Commander Bryant acknowledges the unwavering dedication of his team as the driving force behind the chapter's success. "We have an incredible team that has poured their hearts into building this chapter and making it a vital resource for our veterans," he says. "Our mission is simple: to give back to the heroes who have fought for our country."

This commitment is evident in Chapter 38's rapid growth. Established less than a year ago, it has quickly become one of the fastest-growing

chapters in Arizona. This growth signifies an expanding reach, ensuring more veterans receive the essential support they deserve. DAV offers a comprehensive suite of services, from navigating complex healthcare benefits to securing employment opportunities. Chapter 38 goes beyond just providing resources, and fosters a close-knit community where veterans can connect, share experiences, and forge lasting friendships.

The DAV Department of Arizona Chapter of the Year Award recognizes this holistic approach to veteran support. The plaque presented to Chapter 38 celebrates not only Commander Bryant's outstanding leadership for veterans who have returned home injured or ill, but also his unwavering commitment to the well-being of their families. This dedication has resonated

with chapter members, as evidenced by their expressions of gratitude for Bryant's "devoted service" inscribed on the award itself.

For veterans in Sahuarita and Green Valley, this award signifies more than just recognition; it represents a renewed commitment to service. Chapter 38 is continuously expanding its outreach, ensuring no veteran feels isolated as they navigate the challenges of post-service life.

Whether you are a veteran seeking support, a family member searching for resources, or simply someone looking to give back to your community, DAV Chapter 38 shares that it welcomes you with open arms; they remain dedicated to serving those who have served.
