New choices for business owners

IF you own a business and you offer a 401(k) or similar retirement plan to your employees, you’ll want to stay current on the various changes affecting these types of accounts. And in 2024, you may find some interesting new developments to consider.

These changes are part of the SECURE 2.0 Act, enacted at the end of 2022. And while some parts of the law went into effect in 2023 — such as the new tax credit for employer contributions to start-up retirement plans with 100 or fewer employees — others were only enacted this year.

Here are some of these changes that may interest you:

• New “starter” 401(k)/403(b) – If you haven’t already established a retirement plan, you can now offer a “starter” 401(k) or “safe harbor” 403(b) plan to employees who meet age and service requirements. These plans have lower contribution limits ($6,000 per year, or $7,000 for those 50 or older) than a typical 401(k) or 403(b) and employers can’t make matching or nonelective contributions. These plans are lowcost and easy to administer but the credit for employer contributions doesn’t apply, as these contributions aren’t allowed, and since start-up costs are low, the tax credit for these costs will be correspondingly lower than they’d be for a full-scale 401(k) plan.

• Matches for student loan payments – It’s not easy for young employees to save for retirement and pay back student loans. To help address this problem, Congress included a provision in Secure 2.0 that allows employers the option to provide matching contributions to employees’ retirement plans (401(k), 403(b), 457(b) and SIMPLE IRAs) when these employees make qualified student loan payments. Of course, if you offer this match for student loan payments,

your costs will likely increase, although these matching contributions are tax deductible. In any case, you may want to balance any additional expense with the potential benefit of attracting and retaining employees, particularly those who have recently graduated from college.

• 401(k) eligibility for part-time employees –Part-time employees who are at least 21 years old and have at least 500 hours of service in three consecutive years must now be eligible to contribute to an existing 401(k) plan. The inclusion of part-time employees could lead to higher business expenses for you, depending on the amount of contributions you may make to employees’ plans. Again, though, you’d be offering a benefit that could be attractive to quality part-time employees.

• Emergency savings account –Many people, especially those who don’t earn high incomes, have trouble building up emergency funds they can tap for unexpected costs, such as a major home or car repair or large medical expenses. Now, if you offer a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan, you can include a pension-linked emergency savings account (PLESA) that allows non-highly compensated employees to save up to $2,500, a figure that will be indexed for inflation in the future. PLESA allows for tax-free monthly withdrawals without incurring a 10% tax penalty. PLESA contributions are made on an

after-tax (Roth) basis and must be matched at the same rate as other employee contributions.

You may want to consult with your tax and financial professionals to determine how these changes may affect what you want to do with your retirement plan. The more you know, the better your decisions likely will be.

Rancho Sahuarita to Open Newest Amenity to Residents with Parque La Coraza

PARQUE LA CORAZA, Rancho Sahuarita’s newest neighborhood park amenity is officially opening to residents in June. Located south of Sahuarita Road along Rancho Sahuarita Boulevard, the park offers neighboring families immediate access to a playground, basketball court, green spaces, a dog park, a First Responders Tribute and more. The new larger neighborhood park is designed to serve both existing and future residents, and is located near the master plan’s two newest neighborhoods – Entrada La Coraza and Entrada Del Pueblo.

“We are committed to providing exceptional amenities and programs that foster a sense of community and promote an active lifestyle,” says Jeremy Sharpe, Managing Partner of Rancho Sahuarita. “Parque La Coraza is a continuation of our commitment to just that.” The new park is thoughtfully designed to cater to all ages and interests. Embracing the concept of active green spaces, its open space is perfect for recreation, exercise and other outdoor activities. Dog lovers can enjoy the new lighted dog park, featuring separate sections for large and small breeds. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the Sonoran Learning Trail, perfect for exploring the unique desert flora and fauna.

Families can also take advantage of the playground and ramada, ideal for picnics and outdoor play. The on-site restroom facilities ensure convenience, while the sport court provides space for friendly competitions or to master skills. Finally, the First Responders Tribute, designed to serve as a contemplative reflection of the service by those on the front lines, is meant to be enjoyed by all.

“We are pleased to deliver on our mission to build an impactful park that all residents can enjoy as we continue development in the

southern region of Rancho Sahuarita,” says Suzy Mason, Vice President of Operations. “We are thrilled that families have yet another option for active recreation and play in their backyard and look forward to seeing them out and about enjoying this new park.”

Residents are invited to celebrate at Parque La Coraza’s Grand Opening event, on Sunday, June 23rd from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. at 707 W Paseo La Azanca. Attendees can enjoy an official opening ceremony and ribboncutting, music, pastries, entertainment and more!

SABINO LAKE, CREEK TRAIL, RATTLESNAKE TRAIL, AND ESPERERO TRAIL

Distance: 3.6 miles

Elevation Gain: 328ft

Route: Loop

The Sabino Lake, Creek Trail, and Rattlesnake Loop is a 3.8 mi hike through the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, which is known for its natural beauty and biodiversity. This 3.8 mi moderately difficult trail meanders across the rivers and streams at the mouth of the Sabino Canyon. This hike is excellent for its ease of access from the city and for its diverse, beautiful terrain. You’ll hike next to towering saguaros and prickly pears, witness the area’s astounding bird population fly by, and dip your feet in the water as you go.

This area can reach scorching temperatures in the middle of the day. Start your hike early, bring plenty of water, and avoid hiking this route in the summertime if at all possible.

The Sabino Lake, Creek Trail, and Rattlesnake Loop is a great moderate hike in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area near Tucson. It’s conveniently accessible from the northeastern edge of the city near the Pusch Ridge Wilderness. The scenery is excellent and there’s an impressive array of plant and animal species to look for. This hike is a good pick if you want to enjoy the canyon area’s scenery but want to pass on the more strenuous trails that lead into the canyon.

This area is known for its diversity of bird species, so birders and casual enthusiasts alike will want to keep their eyes on the sky. You can also appreciate the flora of the desert in all its beauty.

This hike requires several water crossings. If there’s been heavy rain or snowmelt recently, the water levels might be a bit too

JUNE 2024

• June 6 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 12:39 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• June 20 - June Solstice. The June solstice occurs at 20:46 UTC. The North Pole of the earth will be tilted toward the Sun, which will have reached its northernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 23.44 degrees north latitude. This is the first day of

high for everyone’s comfort. Bring wading shoes no matter when you choose to hike, but should you visit and find the water too high, you can always come back another day or turn around early to avoid the crossings.

This route can get very hot during the heat of the day, so start your hike early. Also, bring more water than you think you might need and wear sunscreen and a hat as you hike. We generally recommend avoiding hiking around Tucson in the summer months as it presents a risk of heatstroke.

No Dogs allowed on this trail, so please leave your dogs home. You’ll need to pay a small fee to access the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area.

This loop can be done either way. We’ll describe it counterclockwise as we prefer the view this way, but feel free to try it both ways. From the trailhead, take Bear Canyon Trail #29 as it runs along E Remount Place. You can also take the trail directly north of Bear Canyon and then take a few steps down to Bear Canyon Trail where the route ends.

Where Bear Canyon Trail splits, go left. Follow the Lower Sabino Service Road. You can dip down to check out Sabino Lake as you pass it. Cross Sabino Creek and then stay left. Take Creek Trail to where it splits, then stay left and cross the creek again.

Walk a few steps south on N Upper Sabino Canyon Road and then go right onto Rattlesnake Trail. You’ll cross the creek several times before looping around to the left onto Esperero Trail. Follow this trail past a picnic area. Join N Upper Sabino Canyon Road, which will lead you back to the trailhead.

summer (summer solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere.

• June 22 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 01:09 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Strawberry Moon because it signaled the time of year to gather ripening fruit. It also coincides with the peak of the strawberry harvesting season. This moon has also been known as the Rose Moon and the Honey Moon.

DIY SUMMER FACIAL

Aloe vera contains vitamins, enzymes, and antioxidants that promote skin hydration, reduce inflammation, and help heal wounds and sunburns. Its natural antibacterial properties also make it effective against acne. Cucumbers, rich in water content and antioxidants, provide a cooling effect, reduce puffiness, and help in soothing irritated skin. Their high silica content aids in maintaining skin elasticity, making both aloe and cucumbers excellent natural remedies for maintaining healthy,

glowing skin.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of fresh aloe vera gel (you can extract it from an aloe vera leaf)

1/2 cucumber, peeled and chopped 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt (optional, for added moisture and soothing)

1.Prepare the Cucumber: Peel and chop half a cucumber. Blend it until you get a smooth puree.

2.Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix the cucumber puree with 2 tablespoons of fresh aloe vera gel. If using, add 1 tablespoon of

plain yogurt and mix well.

3.Apply the Mask: Cleanse your face thoroughly. Apply the mixture evenly on your face, avoiding the eye area.

4.Relax: Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes. Lie down and relax while the mask works its magic.
