Say Hello to Wags & Whiskers

SUMMER is definitely here!! With the summer months sometimes our furry family members can suffer from allergies and that’s never an easy thing to fix on our own. We can help from anything to a vet prescribed shampoo bath every week, to a monthly medicated shampoo and conditioner, or even a oatmeal deep conditioning bath. Haircuts are also very important this time of year because depending on the hair type your pets might need shorter hair to prevent from overheating, or if you have a double coated dog you’ll want to stay on top of removing the undercoat. If you need any help figuring out what would be best for your family members feel free to stop by and chat with us, we’d love to help! Mention this article to receive free teeth-brushing! Remember to never keep your pets in a locked car! Have a great summer!

A Look Back at the School Year by Dr. Manuel Valenzuela

At the end of each year, one of the most asked questions I receive is, “How did this school year go?” Without hesitation, I have been responding with clarity and conviction. This year has been one of the most rewarding and successful years in my thirty-four (34) year career as a professional educator. Yet, it has also been one of the most challenging. The issues currently facing the USA and the entire world, such as inflation, supply chain issues, and staffing challenges, do not stop at the schoolhouse gate. We all recall the bus service challenges last fall, and the delay in the initiation of the State high school construction projects correlated with pandemic era enrollment shifts. However, like we always do, we rally as a community, to find common

ground, find solutions, and work together to advance this noble mission of delivering a great education for every student that we are honored to serve.

Through this shared commitment and resolve to make our local schools and community the best that they can be, our schools, students, and staff continue to shine in many ways. For example, we have successfully launched the “Pima First-Sahuarita WINS!” scholarship. This provides significantly enhanced postsecondary education access to many Sahuarita HS and Walden Grove HS graduates. The scholarship funds up to two years of full time tuition to Pima Community College. The Sahuarita WINS! Partnership worked across sectors to develop significant resources to get this scholarship off the ground. Besides the Sahuarita USD, it was only possible through the collaboration of Pima Community College, Pima Foundation, Sahuarita Educational Enrichment Foundation, and the local Masonic Lodge. This scholarship opens the door to higher education and high skill professional certifications at an affordable price. It exemplifies the power of mission focus, striving for shared purpose, and working together to get things done. Already about twenty(20) graduates are in the inaugural cohort of this scholarship.

We are graduating twenty-two(22) high school students from Sahuarita Digital Pathways Academy (SDPA), our newest, fully accredited, fully online school. One of our newest Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, in health professions medical assisting, is a

Special needs trust could ease families’ stress

controls when and how funds are distributed, beneficiaries can get frustrated if their requests for money are denied. Additionally, while third-party special needs trusts are funded by someone other than the beneficiary, first-party special needs trusts are funded by the beneficiary’s own assets — and for these first-party special needs trusts, the trust must typically pay back Medicaid for money it has spent on the beneficiary’s behalf after the death of the beneficiary. This repayment could deplete the trust, depriving secondary beneficiaries of any assets they might otherwise receive. Third-party special needs trusts do not require Medicaid repayment.

Consult with a legal professional before establishing a special needs trust to ensure this arrangement is appropriate for your family’s situation. But if it is, and if it’s managed properly, it can relieve you of some of the stress you may feel over the future of your loved one with special needs.

IF you have a family member with special needs, you might face emotional and physical issues, but you also may be concerned about maximizing the financial support your loved one requires. Consequently, you may want to consider establishing a special needs trust.

This type of trust can help maintain the financial security and lifestyle of an individual with special needs. Furthermore, a special needs trust can allow the trust’s beneficiary to receive financial support for supplemental needs without losing public benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.

Here’s how it works: You, as the trust’s grantor, establish the trust and name a trustee who is responsible for managing the trust. You can fund the trust with gifts throughout your lifetime or from other sources, such as inheritances or court settlements. But another popular funding mechanism is life insurance, which the trust can purchase on the life of one or both parents of a special-needs child. And as long as the trust is also named the beneficiary of the policy, government benefits will be protected.

In a special needs trust, the role of trustee is important. A trustee must manage the funds within the trust and ensure those funds are used only to supplement SSI and Medicaid, the government programs that typically pay

for food, housing and medicine. Instead, a special needs trust can be used for most other expenses, including transportation and travel, education, entertainment, professional services and personal items.

You could serve as trustee yourself or choose a relative or a trusted friend. Ideally, you want someone who’s familiar with your wishes and the needs of your family member with disabilities and who is also competent at managing finances and staying current on SSI and Medicaid regulations.

As an alternative, you could hire a professional trust company to manage your special needs trust. This type of company has expertise in asset management and government regulations and can provide you with strict recordkeeping of all the financial transactions associated with your trust. If you go this route, you’ll want to compare different trust companies’ costs and services. For such a personal matter as administering a trust for your special-needs family member, you’ll want to be sure you’re comfortable with whatever company you select.

Also, you’ll want to be familiar with some of the possible areas of concern regarding special needs trusts. For one thing, because the trustee totally

Summer Open Rec Program Returns this June

SUMMER Open Rec, made possible by an ongoing partnership with the Sahuarita Unified School District and Rancho Sahuarita, returns this summer, offering the community’s children a fun, engaging and cooling alternative to the summer heat.

This year the no-cost program runs June 5th – July 13th, Mondays – Thursdays from 12:00 – 4:30 p.m. at the Anza Trail School. Children 6 to 13 years of age can come by to enjoy a variety of different activities; all designed to engage children’s creativity and encourage fitness through play.

Throughout the course of the summer, each week has a different planned theme. Past activities available to children have included games, sports, and arts and crafts. Special guests are also invited to provide unique programming and interactive sessions as a break from the typical activities. Past examples have included the portable Planetarium, sessions with team members from the Reid Park Zoo and more.

Kelly Kyper, Clubhouse Director for Rancho Sahuarita shared that “Rancho Sahuarita is excited and thankful to again be able to partner with SUSD so that we may continue

to offer this important program to children in our community.”

Participation in Summer Open Rec requires the completion of a pre-registration form. Attendance will be offered on a drop-in basis, and a limit of 80 children per day will be in effect. Children 10 years of age and older may come and go as desired. Children 6 to 9 years of age must be signed in and out.

For questions, additional guidelines and to preregister, please visit Club Rancho Sahuarita or email Openrec@ranchosahuarita.com

UPPER GREEN MOUNTAIN TRAIL

Difficulty: Hard

Distance: 9 miles

Elevation: 7,277ft

The weather is rising every day. If you are an outdoor lover, head up the mountain into higher elevation and enjoy the great outdoors. Mt. Lemmon has many hiking trails to explore and enjoy. Green Mountain Trail is one of them. What a great way to escape the heat and see beautiful forest scenery. Some areas may still be affected by the forest fire, but there is so much new growth. It is quite amazing to see how quickly the new forest comes to life through burnt ashes. It is very beautiful. Follow the signs for Green Mountain Trail. Unless you are planned to see other trails, you don’t want to get lost. Always check a map and know the trail you are hiking. Pack plenty of water and snacks as this hike could take over 5 hours.

Driving Directions

Drive up Catalina Highway either to the General Hitchcock Campground trailhead or to the San Pedro Vista Point trailhead.

JUNE 2023

• June 1, 2 - Mars in the Beehive. The planet Mars will pass through the beehive cluster, an open cluster of stars located in the constellation Cancer. Mars can be seen in or very near the cluster on the nights of June 1st and 2nd. A good pair of binoculars should be enough to see this rare event all though, a telescope will provide a much better view.

• June 4 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 03:43 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Strawberry Moon because it signaled the time of year to gather ripening fruit. It also coincides with the peak of the strawberry harvesting season. This moon has also been known as the Rose Moon and the Honey Moon.

• June 4 - Venus at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Venus reaches greatest eastern elongation of 45.4 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Venus since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the bright planet in the western sky after sunset.

• June 12, 13 - Venus in the Beehive. The planet Venus will pass through the beehive cluster, an open cluster of stars located in the constellation Cancer. Venus can be seen in or very near the cluster on the nights of June 12 and 13. A good pair of binoculars should be enough to see this rare event all though, a telescope will provide a much better view.

• June 18 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 04:39 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• June 21 - June Solstice. The June solstice occurs at 14:51 UTC. The North Pole of the earth will be tilted toward the Sun, which will have reached its northernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 23.44 degrees north latitude. This is the first day of summer (summer solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere.

STRAWBERRIES AND YOGURT BRIGHTENING

Facial Mask

Strawberries naturally contain vitamin C, salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acid- all of which help to exfoliate, moisturize, and brighten the skin.

Yogurt is rich in lactic acid, which also helps to nourish and exfoliate the skin.

Honey is a must, as it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Great for your skin.

INGREDIENTS

3 large ripe strawberries

1 Tbsp plain whole milk yogurt

1 tsp raw honey

INSTRUCTIONS

Mash the strawberries until mushy, with a baby food consistency. Add the yogurt and honey, stir to combine.

Apply the mask to the face, and leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water. This mask will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week in an air-tight container.

partnership with the Pima JTED and also our own Northwest Medical Center. Again, these efforts advance finding common ground, to support aligned growth of our economy, and also advance congruent workforce development. About eighteen (18) students are completing this inaugural medical assisting program this year.

This year, we were honored by Tucson Electric Power with their “Go Green” Award for intentional efforts to advance sustainability initiatives. We were just notified about our State safety grant initiative, which was approved and will not only support our successful School Resource Officer (SRO) programs at the high schools, but is allowing us to keep moving forward with action steps to expand the program to our middle school serving buildings. As another example, even through the pandemic, with volatility in enrollments, we have been able to responsibly provide our dedicated professional staff with compensation increases, including a 4% raise for the ‘23-’24 school year.

Our people and school programs continue to make Sahuarita Shine. One of our speech language pathologists, Dr. Sarah Dachtyl, received State recognition with the prestigious Sandra Turek Outstanding Leadership

Award from the Arizona Speech and Hearing Association (ArSHA). For the first time, the Walden Grove HS Academic Decathlon Team became our first qualifier for the Academic Decathlon Nationals! Our highly accomplished Navy JROTC program continued building on its successes, winning the Arizona John McCain Drill Meet and qualifying for Nationals in orienteering and marksmanship. Once again, an NJROTC program alumnus is graduating from one of our Nation’s Military Academies. Congratulations to Midshipman Carson Lopez (WGHS ‘18), who is graduating from the US Naval Academy this month, is being commissioned as an Ensign, and is starting his career as a Surface Warfare Officer. Over thirty (30) of our students were selected for the prestigious Southern Arizona Regional Honor Band. In career and technical education (CTE), our students qualified for Nationals in construction technology and culinary arts. Athletic teams from our high schools earned State Championships in wrestling, dance, and student council. Several other programs, including baseball, softball, and winter guard and percussion also earned State recognition.

As we look to the next year, and beyond, there is much to be excited about. Currently, we are reaching out through community conversations, staff presentations, and surveys

to identify important, major facility needs in all schools and other facilities. For example, some of the emerging areas which have been identified thus far include additional preschool space, Central Cafeteria modifications, renewing athletic facilities, additional fine arts space, special education space, and technology infrastructure. We are in the process of evaluating the information received, with a tentative action plan to present these findings to the Governing Board and public over the summer, in anticipation of a possible bond project ballot measure in the Fall, specifically to address these identified needs to keep our schools safe, modern, efficient, and future ready to meet the community’s needs with excellence. And, we are confident that we can achieve this without raising our local school tax rates from current levels.

In summary, this year has brought us many fruits of success to celebrate, and the promise of a bright future. It is the direct result of the spirit of community which defines us and moves us in the right direction, that of being purposeful, positive, and committed to finding common ground and working together to overcome challenges and advance our noble purpose of “working as a team to help every student succeed.” And together, we will continue to make a difference!
