Rattlesnakes

It’s July, it’s hot. When it is hot Rattlesnakes are active. Rattlesnakes are most active during the months of April through October. Because the sun is so strong during the day, most snakes are hiding in shaded areas to keep cool. With that said dawn and dusk are the prime times to see these animals out and about.

Let's get to know this creature, and how we can stay safe if we encounter them.

Rattle snakes do not hatch from an egg, they are born alive! From birth they are fully ready to live on their own, with fangs and venom. As a baby rattlesnake the most important thing for them is to find food and shelter as soon as possible. They are so small they have the potential to become food for much bigger predators. Because they are tiny little things, they may end up in places such as swimming pools, planters or in homes.

There are many holes around that belong to squirrels and prairie dogs. Don't assume these homes belong to just those cute furry creatures. Snakes do not dig holes to live in, they TAKE

holes to live in. It has been said that a rattlesnake will always rattle, but that is not always true. If a rattlesnake is sleeping and does not smell you or feel your vibrations, you may startle it and it will strike to protect itself. It is important to always be aware of your surroundings. Rattlesnakes blend in well with our Arizona rock and dirt. Note, that although relaxing and enjoyable sitting outside to watch beautiful birds eat out of the bird feeder you have, they will attract snakes of all kinds.

If you encounter a rattlesnake, don't get too nervous. Like the saying goes, "it is more afraid of you than you are of it". If you see a rattlesnake, stop where you are and move slowly away from the snake. The rattlesnake will not chase you but keep a safe distance. Be sure to keep children and pets away if a rattlesnake is located near you.

If the rattlesnake is in an area that is not threatening, just leave it alone, as it is probably passing through looking for food. If the rattlesnake is in an area that is threatening to yourself, a child and/or a pet call your local fire department, or a private pet removal company

to come remove it. If however you take matters into your own hands and kill the snake, know that a rattlesnake can have a reflex bite even if you think it is dead. Rattlesnakes are cold blooded, so it takes time for their nerves to stop functioning. Reflex bites with venom can occur for several hours after the death of the snake.

What to do if bitten by a rattlesnake: Remain calm

Remove jewelry and watches from affected area

Keep limb at level below the heart

Decrease activity

Get to medical facility ASAP

What NOT to do if bitten by a rattlesnake: Do not apply ice

Do not use incisions

Do not use a tourniquet or constriction band Do not administer alcohol or drugs

Make sure you and your family are aware of your surroundings, and know what to do if you encounter this creature, we share our desert with. Always be cautious, snakes can hide in or under ANYTHING!

Retirees: Talk finances with your grown children

Here’s another move to consider: Adjust your investment mix to possibly provide you with more income in retirement. During your working years, you may have invested primarily for growth — after all, you could be retired for two or more decades, so you’ll need to draw on as many financial assets as possible. But once you’re retired, your investment focus may need to shift somewhat toward incomeproducing opportunities. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll still need some growth potential to help keep ahead of inflation.

One final suggestion: Let your children know if you already have a strategy in place to meet the potentially high costs of long-term care, such as a nursing home stay. This burden is certainly something you won’t want your children to take on.

By informing your children about your financial picture, and how you’re trying to improve it, you can ease everyone’s minds — so keep the lines of communication open.

WHEN you’re retired, you’ll likely have some financial concerns — just like all retirees. However, if you’ve invested regularly and followed a longterm financial strategy, you should be able to address most issues that come your way. But there’s one important action that’s sometimes overlooked by retirees: sharing their financial situation with their grown children. And this knowledge can benefit everyone in your family.

You might be surprised by the concern your children have for your financial well-being. Consider these findings from a 2023 study by Age Wave and Edward Jones:

• 66% of millennials (generally defined as ranging from 27 to 42) worry that their parents or in-laws may not have enough money to live comfortably in retirement.

• 83% of millennials would rather know their parents are financially secure in their retirement, even if it means their parents pass on less money to them.

If you have children in this age range or older, or who soon will be, how can you address their concerns and potentially improve your financial outlook? Communication is the key. By openly communicating with your family about your financial status, you can reduce anxieties and misperceptions. If you’re in good financial shape, your adult children

may be reassured that you won’t be needing their assistance. And if you are feeling some financial pressures, you can inform your children of the steps you are taking to improve your situation.

One such step may be to reduce your cost of living — the less you spend day to day, the better your ability to preserve your investment and retirement accounts. You may be able to reduce costs in many small ways, such as ending streaming services you no longer use, but you could make an even bigger impact by downsizing your living arrangements. In fact, 72% of today’s retirees have downsized or are willing to downsize to reduce their housing costs, according to the Age Wave/Edward Jones survey. Downsizing isn’t for everyone, but if it’s a possibility for you, it may be worth considering because the savings could be significant.

You may also be able to reduce or consolidate your debts. Start by understanding how much and what kinds of debt you have. Then, consider ways to lower your payments, such as refinancing. For example, if you’re carrying a balance on multiple credit cards, you might be able to transfer the amounts you owe onto a single card with a more favorable interest rate.

CAP TRAIL - TANGERINE TO PINAL

Difficulty - Easy

Distance - 17 miles

The Cap trail was designated as a National Recreational Trail and once it is fully completed, will be the second longest trail in Arizona, at about 336 miles in length. The segment that is completed in Marana is a flat, wide, elevated dirt road that runs along the CAP canal. It runs north of Tangerine Rd, just east of I-10, and it goes all the way to the Pinal County line. In Pinal County, the CAP Trail will be almost 100 miles in length and will connect the communities of Red Rock, Eloy, Coolidge, Florence, and Apache Junction. The trail heads are open from Dusk until Dawn. There is a large parking area, big enough to accommodate even horse trailers if you wanted to use the trail on horseback. This is a great trail for mountain biking, or just simply walking a flat path and enjoying our beautiful state. Chances of seeing wildlife are slim, but it could happen. It is July, the Sun is Hot, get out early. Always be prepared with water and a snack. Always be aware of your surroundings.

Directions:

Head North on I-10. Exit at Tangerine Rd. Take a right. You will take an almost immediate left on Mandarina Blvd. Follow the road and signs to the CAP trailhead.

JULY 2023

• July 3 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 11:40 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Buck Moon because the male buck deer would begin to grow their new antlers at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Thunder Moon and the Hay Moon. This is also the first of four supermoons for 2023. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

• July 17 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 18:33 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as

galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• July 28, 29 - Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by comets Marsden and Kracht. The shower runs annually from July 12 to August 23. It peaks this year on the night of July 28 and morning of July 29. The nearly full moon will block most of the fainter meteors this year. But if you are patient, you may still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius but can appear anywhere in the sky.

The Lasting Value

continued from page 7 example, offers many features in homes; all designed to maximize energy efficiency and reduce utility bills. Standard energy-efficient features in Meritage homes include spray foam insulation (which has the bonus of helping to keep pests out and reducing outside noise), a multispeed HVAC system that conserves energy while helping to improve air quality and reduce humidity when compared to typical HVACs, and Low-E windows which reflect the heat from the sun and block the rays from the interior window pane.

Various Financing Options and the Opportunity to Obtain a Lower Interest Rate:

While the cost of buying a home can seem overwhelming currently with the increase in interest rates, buyers can always refinance down the road. Plus, historically, real estate in general has had stable growth in value over the long term. While dips in the housing market through tough economic times can at times cause a home to lose value, often the value is regained as the market improves and healthy conditions return. Owning a home also allows you to build equity, and as

Sahuarita

your home increases in value over the long term and you make payments on your mortgage, that equity will continue to rise.

Homebuilders in Rancho Sahuarita continue to offer special programs* aimed at helping homebuyers get into a new home. Currently selling in Entrada La Coraza and Entrada Del Pueblo, Centex, which offers “Homes for How You Live” continues to offer special financing options for buyers, including a “special interest rate offer on select move-in ready homes that close by August 31, 2023 and you could get more home for your money.”

Richmond American Homes is also currently selling in both Entrada La Coraza and Entrada Del Pueblo, featuring homes from their sought-after Seasons Collection. Several quick move-in homes are available, and the company is offering special financing incentives on QMIs that can close by 7/31. They also have select closing cost incentives available with the use of their in-house lender/insurance, and are offering a movein package (blinds, W/D, and fridge) valued up to $3,500.

KB Home is currently running a promotion in Rancho Sahuarita that aims to give back to members of the community that give of themselves, offering 1% off the base price of a new KB home for “eligible active-duty military personnel, police officers and firefighters”. Please contact the Sales Teams at either of KB Home’s sales centers in Entrada Del Rio or Entrada Del Pueblo for more details.

Beautiful New Home Options Nearby: Being armed with the right tools and information can help make the decision to purchase a home a bit easier. The expert sales associates at each homebuilder, and many realtors, are available, and ready with resources that can help buyers make an informed decision and select the best option for their current needs and situation.
