Financial FOCUS

Prepare yourself for a long retirement

We all want to live long lives. We all expect to live long lives. But are we financially prepared for this longevity?

Before we get to the issue of preparation, let’s look at a couple of interesting findings from a 2022 survey by Age Wave and Edward Jones:

• The surveyed retirees said, on average, they expect to live to 89, and they said the ideal length of retirement is 29 years.

• When asked if they want to live to 100, nearly 70% of the respondents said “yes.” The main reason for this desire for long life? To spend more years with their family and friends.

Of course, none of us can see into the future and know how long we’ll be around. But with advances in medical care and a greater awareness of healthy lifestyles, these aspirations have a real basis in reality.

However, if you’re going to enjoy a longer lifespan, and the extra years with your loved ones, you need to ensure your finances are also in good shape. How can you make this happen?

Here are some basic steps to follow:

• Save and invest early and often. This may be the oldest piece of financial advice, but it’s still valid. The earlier you start saving and investing for your retirement, the greater your potential accumulation. Consider this: If you began saving just $5,000 per year at age 25, and earned a hypothetical 6.5% annual rate of return, and didn’t take any early withdrawals, you’d end up with $935,000 by the time you reached 65. But if you waited until 35 to start saving and investing, and you earned the same hypothetical 6.5% return – again with no early withdrawals – you’d only end up with $460,000. And if you didn’t start saving until 45, you’d end up with just over $200,000, again given the same 6.5% return.

• Be mindful of debt. You may not want to be burdened with certain debts when you enter retirement. So, while you’re still working, try to reduce unwanted debts, particularly those that don’t offer the financial benefits of tax-deductible interest payments. The lower your debt load, the more you can save and invest for the future.

• Keep reviewing your progress. It’s important to monitor the progress you need to make toward achieving your goal of a comfortable retirement. Over the short term, your investment balances may fluctuate, especially in volatile financial markets such as we’ve seen in the early part of this year. But you’ll get a clearer picture of your situation if you look at long-term results. For example, have your accounts grown over the past 10 years as much as you had planned? And going forward, do you think you’re

in good shape, or will you need to make some changes to your investment strategy? Keep in mind that, if you’re 50 or older, you can make “catch-up” contributions to your IRA and 401(k) that allow you to exceed the regular limits. You may also want to adjust your investment mix as you near retirement to potentially lower your risk exposure.

Hopefully, you will enjoy many years of a healthy, happy retirement. And you can help support this vision by carefully considering your financial moves and making the ones that are right for you.

PREPARATION

Monsoon season! Here we are, hoping to get to see the afternoon clouds build up and roll in and give us some much needed rain. We know we have to endure really hot weather and humid days in order for the formula to be right to bring on the rain. The monsoon season can bring great weather, as well as dangerous situations. The monsoon does not just bring a little rain, it comes down hard and it is a full-blown thunderstorm. Just like on the Fourth of July during fireworks, loud thunder can easily scar your animals. Be sure to protect them, you don’t want them getting lost during a storm and having the potential of getting caught in floodwaters. Also once the rains come down we have these toads called Colorado River Toads that only come out from the ground during the monsoons. If your dog were to get out and get one of these toads in their mouth it can be very poisonous. When it rains it pours! It is crucial that you pay attention to water levels. There are many areas that have potential to flood. Don’t take a chance trying to cross the running water, even if you think your vehicle is big enough, stop and go back the way you came. An average sized vehicle can float in as little as ten inches of water. Think smart; don’t get caught in a dangerous situation. Make sure you have some flashlights handy, and check that their batteries are fresh; because there is a good chance your electricity will go out during one of these storms. Not only can the water be dangerous, but also the wind that comes with the storm. More often than not the wind picks up very heavy and in our desert picks up a lot of dust. So now we have a dust storm. Visibility can be close to zero. If you are out driving, especially on the freeway, pull over as far as you can, put your vehicle in park and turn off your headlights and taillights. Do not leave your foot on the brake, because if other motorists can’t see they may follow the brake lights and end up hitting your car. Remember the Monsoon is coming, be prepared and think smart!

DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR PETS.

It is very common for dogs and cats to become scared during a monsoon storm. If you are able, bring your outdoor pet inside. Try to distract them by turning on the TV, or radio, or just playing with them with their favorite toys. If they want to hide, let them, they are just trying to escape the loud noises and lightning associated with the storm.

If you cannot bring your dog indoors, make sure their id tag is up to date. Be sure to check your yard to assure your dog has no way to escape. It is very common for dogs to run away in fear. If you do have an animal that has high anxiety during a storm, ask your veterinarian about a prescription that will help relax your furry friend!

THE MUSICAL TIME MACHINE

Strawberries- The salicylic acid present in strawberries reduces and fades away hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Strawberries act as a great exfoliator and remove the dead skin cells that pull your skin down. It also tightens the pores and prevents further blemishes from forming.

Lemons- Lemon is an excellent source to lessen dark spots and pimple marks. Lemon juice has been used for ages to reduce dark spots by mixing it in Homemade Face Packs. Lemon juice’s citric acid slowly disappears spots and evens out the skin.

Lemon is also known to be effective in reducing blackheads and excess oil from the face. Simply diluting the lemon juice with water or even honey, and applying a thin layer on your face with the help of a cotton pad before going to bed, is known to be a great remedy to reduce excess oil production.

Lemons also have got antimicrobial effects that help in treating acne. At the same time, lemon also has antifungal effects, which is why they are widely used in both, skincare and haircare regimes to keep skin and hair problem-free.

Lemon is also considered to increase the collagen level. Few of the supporters of using lemon on the skin say that the citrus fruit is a standard technique of increasing collagen level in the skin. It has a protein that breaks down with age, which can further reduce the lines and wrinkles and delays aging.

GREEN MOUNTAIN TRAIL

Route Type: Out & back • Distance: 8.8 miles • Elevation: 2,575 ft • Difficulty: Hard

Due to the rising temperatures in Tucson, head up towards Mt. Lemmon to enjoy cooler weather and get in some hiking. This trail is for experienced hikers. The Green Mountain Trail is an 8.8 mile out and back trail. It typically takes about 5.5 hours to complete. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a leash. Most of the trail goes through the Bighorn Fire Scar. The Bighorn Fire started on June 5, 2020. Although devastating, the regrowth is just beautiful. The trail was minimally affected, but you may still see charred debri. Before exploring this hiking trail be sure to check weather updates, so you won’t be in the middle of a monsoon storm. While the temperatures are drastically cooler in the higher elevation, be sure to take plenty of water and a snack. Always be aware of your surroundings and look out for wildlife.

Getting there:

Drive East on Speedway (5.0 miles)

Left on Wilmot and continue to Tanque Verde (4.3 miles)

Left on Catalina Highway (16.1 miles)

Signs will help you find the turn into this trailhead- it is located across from the Chihuahua Pine Picnic Area (up-mountain from the Middle Bear Picnic Area and downmountain from the General Hitchcock Campground)

JULY

Night Sky

JULY 13 - FULL MOON, SUPERMOON. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 18:38 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Buck Moon because the male buck deer would begin to grow their new antlers at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Thunder Moon and the Hay Moon. This is also the second of three supermoons for 2022. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

JULY 28 - MERCURY AT GREATEST WESTERN ELONGATION. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 17:55 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects

such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

JULY 28, 29 - DELTA AQUARIDS METEOR SHOWER. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by comets Marsden and Kracht. The shower runs annually from July 12 to August 23. It peaks this year on the night of July 28 and morning of July 29. This is a great year for this shower because the new moon means dark skies for what should be an excellent show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

On June 22, 2022, the SUSD Governing Board adopted a resolution, calling a special election for the continuation of the local Maintenance and Operations (M&O) and District Additional Assistance (DAA) overrides. The ballot measures for the election this fall are now referred to as Proposition 492 and 493. These long established local investments are intentionally targeted to objectives that define, enrich and enhance the total quality of educational programs and opportunities which we provide. The M&O override supports over 100 highly qualified, skilled, and student-centered professionals to support class size reduction, security monitors, K-12 guidance counselors, K-12 fine arts programs, including general music, band, orchestra, choral music, drama and dance, K-12 physical education, instructional paraprofessionals to support individualized instruction, NJROTC leadership development program, Career and Technical Education (CTE), middle and high school interscholastic athletics, and student activity sponsors.

These purposeful investments continue to yield much fruit in the quality of educational programming from grades K-12, well-rounded learning experiences, individualized pathways, and opportunities for postsecondary success. For example, last year, our students earned 1499 college credits through our dual enrollment academic program with Pima Community College, and a major portion was earned in our robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

The value of these credits in Arizona in-State tuition is about $3M dollars! The Class of 2022 broke records by earning a total of $14.5M in postsecondary scholarships! Our student athletes continue to shine across the region and State. For example, in 2021-22, the Sahuarita HS Mustangs wrestling team earned the Arizona State Championship and facilitated scholarship opportunities for our students. The fine arts are a pillar of our educational opportunities. The Walden Grove Dance Team earned its seventh (7th) consecutive Arizona State Dance Championship! In the NJROTC leadership program, our student cadets continue to shine. Two more of our students were admitted to the highly competitive and rigorous United States Service Academies. Furthermore, for example, the marksmanship team earned a State title in the CMP Junior Olympics and qualified for Nationals! The NJROTC program consistently earns Unit Distinction ribbons, making it among the most decorated JROTC units in the State and region of the United States.

All successful organizations must have strong capital investment to provide the people with the tools to achieve success. The K-12 public education arena is no exception. The DAA override targets specific capital needs, including facility improvements and repairs, security, instructional technology, climate controlled school buses, fine arts and athletic equipment, and classroom furniture and equipment. An example of the objective outcomes made possible by this additional local investment is the phased integration of Chromebook devices, thus lowering the device to student ratio, and making these vital learning tools readily available. Each year, for the last several years, we have been purchasing two new, climate controlled school buses to improve the service experience for our students. At this point, the majority of SUSD #30 school buses are climate controlled, and we anticipate continuing with this progress in the years to come. One school bus

costs about $175,000. Through these local, targeted investments, our students have the opportunity to begin learning a musical instrument in the fifth grade. Every student who desires to pursue music education in band or orchestra is supported in this effort. The instruments are expensive. For example, a French horn can cost $2,000 or more. And, the school intentionally chooses to purchase some of the instruments for school use and to make sure that every eligible student who desires to participate has that opportunity. Athletics are a vital part of a well rounded, comprehensive education. Some of life's most important lessons, like teamwork, self-discipline, work ethic, sacrifice and character, are taught on the field of interscholastic competition. These programs are very important to many of our students. Yet, once again, the equipment can be costly. The price of outfitting one football player is close to $1,000, and we strive with intentionality to provide our students with the safest and most appropriate equipment and facilities possible. In a growing community, we have been regularly building new schools and classroom learning spaces. Besides the cost of construction, which continues to increase, there is a significant investment that must be made in providing the needed furniture and equipment, such as tables, chairs, and laboratory benches.

The M&O Override goes back to the 1980s, and the DAA Override has, likewise, been around for several years. These are not new taxes. They have been strongly supported, and a consistent part of the local school budgets. They have allowed us to provide an elevated level of service than might otherwise be possible. Without them, many programs would not be offered, or they would be offered at a reduced level. The dollars are targeted to specific objectives that advance the quality of education provided to students. Students shine in their educational growth and development. They represent our community with excellence across the region, State and beyond! Furthermore, these programs open doors of opportunity that help our students achieve their potential, and provide economic and workforce advantages to the growth and prosperity of our own community. Great schools truly help make great communities! Sahuarita succeeds in large part due to the cohesive spirit that binds us in a shared commitment to making our community the best it can be in education, economic development, workforce opportunities, and overall quality of life. Together, we continue to make a difference! 

Interview

DEBBIE MORALES

Envisioning

Debbie Morales has been on the Sahuarita Town Council since 2020 and says there still is work to be done for The Town of Sahuarita and the community as it continues to grow and prosper.

Q: What do you see as the major opportunities for the Town of Sahuarita in the future?

DM: "As we continue to grow and more commercial opportunities land in Sahuarita it pleases me that the workforce will be closer to home for some local residents."

Q: What has been your Favorite moment as a council member?

DM: "My favorite moments as a council member is when the constituents trust me, trust my opinion and have faith to reach out to me whether good or bad.:

Q: How long have you lived in Sahuarita?

DM: “I moved to Sahuarita in March of 2003 from Tucson,” she said.

Morales moved to Sahuarita from Tucson in 2003. Initially, Debbie worked as a 911 operator/dispatcher for the City of South Tucson Police, Fire and Meds, which also included the Town of Sahuarita Police Department.
