How will you exit your business?

IF you own a business, you’ve always got a lot on your mind. But no matter how busy you are today, you need to think about tomorrow. Specifically, you’ll want to create an exit strategy for the day you want to move on from your business to a new phase in your life.

To develop this strategy, you’ll need to address these key questions:

• How much do you need (or want) for your business? Ideally, you’ll want the sale of your business to meet your retirement and estateplanning goals. So, you’ll need to think carefully about these goals and what costs they may entail. And these issues aren’t just financial — for example, when you think about how you may want to spend your time in retirement, you might realize that you don’t really want to exit your business completely. So, you might decide to sell just part of it, or sell it entirely, but stay on to help manage it or possibly do some consulting for the new owners.

• How much is your business worth? You may want to calculate your business’ value three to five years before your planned exit. You could do this on your own, but it’s typically advantageous to use professional valuation services. If you’re gifting or selling your business to family members, selling it to an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) or settling an estate, you’ll need to get a more formal qualified appraisal to meet IRS standards.

• How can you close the gap between what you need and what your business is worth? The amount you need from the sale of your

business to support your retirement goals may be more than what your business is actually worth. To help close this gap, you could try to boost your business’s profits through the usual means, such as introducing new products, raising prices or cutting costs. But you might also try to lower the amount you need from the sale by working longer, reducing your personal spending and saving more outside the business.

• Who will take over your business? When planning for a successor for your business, you have several choices, including selling to a family member or an outside buyer. Going public or liquidating the business are also options. These are distinct paths, but depending on your circumstances, one might be more appropriate for you than another. To cite just one factor, if you don’t have an obvious choice for a family member to take over the business, you might have to consider other buyers. In any case, you’ll need to explore all the economic and personal factors involved in the choice of successor.

Who can help you with your exit strategy? Exiting a business can be complex. To ensure you’re making the right moves for your overall financial and family situations, you may want to build an exit strategy team, possibly consisting of your financial, legal and tax advisors. You may also need to enlist the services of a commercial banker and a business evaluation expert. Each of these

professionals can bring a different area of expertise to your exit decisions, and together they can help address all the issues related to your exit strategy.

Exiting your business will take a lot of planning and decisions — but if it’s done right, it can be worth the effort.

Green Valley Fire Plans to Annex Northern Sahuarita into Service Area

GREEN Valley Fire District is in the process of gathering signatures to annex the northern portion of Sahuarita into their service area, which includes the communities of Rancho Sahuarita and Rancho Resort. The annexation comes as Rural Metro Fire announced its plans to stop providing services within the town.

In order to annex the additional area, the team of Green Valley Fire has been reaching out to residents and business owners in the community, asking for support in the effort. State statute requires that 50% plus one of the total parcel owners in the area and 50% plus one of the total assessed value for the area must be obtained through signatures.

If successful in obtaining the required signatures by the end of August 2023, Chief Wunder, from Green Valley Fire, has stated that he expects to begin service in July 2024. In the interim, the Town of Sahuarita entered into an agreement with Rural Metro Corporation to ensure their continued operation through this transition process, so that residents would still have access to these important services.

Chief Wunder shared that “GVFD is excited and grateful for the support we have received from both the residents and businesses in the annexation area so far, but we still have quite a few people we have not been able to make contact with. Your support is critical to the success of this annexation, and we would love to make contact and gain your signature of support.”

He continued: “GVFD would like to make this as easy as possible. To sign, you can either contact our office at 520-625-9400 or make an appointment online at www.gvfire.org, and we will come by your residence or business, and get your signature.”

Managing Partner for Rancho Sahuarita, Jeremy Sharpe commented on the proposed annexation and Green Valley Fire working collaboratively with the Town and Rural Metro, saying: “As always, the safety and wellbeing of

our residents is our highest priority. Therefore, we are grateful that in light of Rural Metro’s decision to stop providing service within the community, that Rural Metro, Green Valley Fire District and Town Leadership have been working together to find a solution that does not compromise on that safety. Making sure that our residents have access to necessary fire protection and emergency services is crucial. Thus, we encourage residents to sign the petition, as we have, to ensure quality emergency services continue in our community. "

HIKING IN THE DESERT

Difficulty: Easy | Distance: 2.9 miles | Duration: 1- 1.5 hours | Elevation: 269ft

Mosaic and Slingshot Loop

The Mosaic and Slingshot Loop is a solid pick for its ease of access in Tucson and its all-ages difficulty level. This hike is long enough to let you enjoy being in the beautiful Painted Hills Trails Park, but it’s easy enough for beginners, kids, and most others to enjoy. There are connecting trails that allow you to keep hiking longer if you’d like, or you can turn back early if you’re very short on time.

The hike begins at the Painted Hills Trailhead. Take the Mosaic Trail to a Y-junction, where you’ll go right. Hike between two unnamed peaks and then around the northern face of Bactrian Summit. Turn left with the trail to hike between Recoil Peak and Bactrian Summit. At a 5-way junction, simply continue straight through. At the next junction, take a left to hike along the southern base of Bactrian Summit, taking a few relaxed switchbacks down near the road again to return to the trailhead. There are no restrooms at the trailhead, so come prepared. Bring water and wear sun protection, and try to plan your hike for the cooler mornings or evenings.

How to get there

3590 W. Anklam Road, Tucson. From Interstate 10 in Tucson, take Exit 257 for Speedway Boulevard. Follow Speedway 2.2 miles west (go right) to Greasewood Road, turn left (south) and continue 0.8 mile to Anklam Road. Turn right and go 1.2 miles to the trailhead on the right. The lot accommodates about 19 vehicles but there’s no room for equestrian staging.

• August 1 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located opposite the Earth from the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 18:33 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Sturgeon Moon because the large sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes and other major lakes were more easily caught at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon. This is also the second of four supermoons for 2023. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

• August 10 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 27.4 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset.

• August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 12 and the morning of August 13. The crescent moon should not be too much

of a problem this year. Skies should still be dark enough for a good show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

• August 16 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 09:39 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• August 27 - Saturn at Opposition. The ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons. A medium-sized or larger telescope will allow you to see Saturn's rings and a few of its brightest moons.

• August 31 - Full Moon, Supermoon, Blue Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 01:37 UTC. This is also the third of four supermoons for 2023. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual. Since this is the second full moon in the same month, it is sometimes referred to as a blue moon.

Perseids Meteor Shower

As the long days of summer transition into the waning days of the year, the month of August brings with it a celestial spectacle that captivates stargazers and astronomers alike—the Perseids meteor shower. This annual meteor shower is one of the most anticipated events in the night sky calendar, dazzling observers with its luminous trails of shooting stars and providing an opportunity to connect with the cosmos in a truly awe-inspiring way.

The Perseids meteor shower occurs every year from late July to mid-August, reaching its peak around August 11th to 13th. This captivating cosmic event is caused by the Earth's orbital path intersecting with the debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. As our planet passes through the comet's dusty trail, the fragments, mostly composed of small rocks and dust particles, enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up upon entry, creating brilliant streaks of light that we observe as shooting stars.

One of the reasons the Perseids meteor shower is so widely celebrated is its consistent and impressive display. With a typical peak rate of around 60 to 100 meteors per hour, the Perseids offer a remarkable opportunity for sky enthusiasts to witness dozens of shooting stars during a single evening, provided the weather cooperates and

light pollution is minimal.

For many people, the Perseids meteor shower has become an annual tradition, beckoning families, friends, and individuals to find a dark spot away from city lights to lie back on a blanket and marvel at the night sky. This awe-inspiring event often ignites a sense of wonder and introspection, reminding us of our place in the vastness of the universe and encouraging a deeper connection to the cosmos.

Beyond the enchantment and visual splendor, the Perseids meteor shower has also captured the attention of scientists and astronomers. Observing and studying the meteor shower can provide valuable insights into the composition and behavior of comets. The paths and velocities of the meteors can reveal essential information about the structure of Comet Swift-Tuttle and help researchers understand its origins and trajectory better.

Moreover, the Perseids meteor shower serves as an educational opportunity for space science outreach and public engagement. Astronomy clubs, planetariums, and science centers often organize special events and star parties during the shower's peak to allow people of all ages to learn about the science behind this celestial

phenomenon. Such initiatives foster an interest in space exploration and encourage the next generation of astronomers and space enthusiasts.

As you prepare to witness this stunning cosmic display, a few tips can enhance your meteorwatching experience. Find a location far from artificial lights to ensure the darkest possible sky. Lay back and let your eyes adjust to the darkness for about 20 minutes to maximize your chances of seeing the fainter meteors. Bring a comfortable chair or reclining seat for easy star gazing. And most importantly, remember to be patient— meteor showers can be unpredictable, and it may take some time before the shower reaches its peak.

In conclusion, the August Perseids meteor shower is an astronomical event that beautifully marries science and wonder, uniting stargazers across the globe in shared amazement. As we gaze upon the night sky and witness these short streaks of light, we are reminded of the grandeur and mysteries of the universe that stretch far beyond our comprehension. So, mark your calendars, find a dark spot under the heavens, and prepare for a breathtaking display of shooting stars—the August Perseids meteor shower awaits, ready to inspire, awe, and connect us to the cosmic wonders above.
