OSLER FOUNDATION’S HOLI GALA
Festival of Colours Welcomes Spring, Raises More than $1.24 Million for Osler
Hospitals
April 8, 2025, BRAMPTON/ETOBICOKE – William Osler Health System Foundation’s (Osler Foundation) 12th annual Holi Gala – Festival of Colours, presented by BVD Group, raised an incredible $1,241,129 in support of William Osler Health System (Osler) hospitals over the weekend.
The sold-out event attracted nearly 900 philanthropists and community leaders for a spectacular evening filled with gourmet food stations, ‘Insta-worthy’ photo ops, a spectacular silent auction, a delectable dinner and sizzling dance performances. The night culminated in a show-stopping live performance by Punjabi trio, The Landers, who brought guests to their feet in celebration.
“Holi Gala continues to be the most vibrant, inspirational event of the year and we are proud to do our part to support William Osler Health System Foundation,” said Bikram Dhillon, CEO, BVD Group.
Holi Gala is Osler Foundation’s largest fundraiser and provides essential support for Osler hospitals: Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness. This year’s event comes at a pivotal time, as Osler marks Peel Memorial’s 100 years of care in Brampton and recently broke ground on the new Peel Memorial Hospital, which will bring new and enhanced programs and services, including a new Emergency Department, to Brampton and surrounding areas for generations.
Pictured: Holi Gala headliners, The Landers (Back row), pictured with the Holi Gala 2025 volunteer Steering Committee: (L-R) Irfan Siddiqui, Nikki Gill, Jake Dheer, Sabrina Hazel, Dr. Vandana Ahluwalia, Manny Mann, Pankaj Bajaj, Pal Ghumman, Preet Bassi, Dr. Gurjit Bajwa, Hargeet Nanda, Dota Bidzios, Jenny Gill, John Digby.
“On behalf of the patients and families who rely on Osler hospitals, thank you to the generous sponsors, donors and guests of Holi Gala who are continuing the proud 100-year legacy of community support that began with Peel Memorial,” said Ken Mayhew, President and CEO, William Osler Health System Foundation. “Rather than saying something should be done, our community is stepping forward— with diverse backgrounds but common purpose—to get it done. With the funds raised from Holi Gala, Brampton’s second hospital moves another step closer to reality.”
A portion of funds raised from Holi Gala will support vital emergency care services at Osler. With more than 300,000 emergency visits each year across its three hospitals, Osler’s Emergency Departments are the busiest in Ontario, and unprecedented growth in the communities Osler serves means increased demand on the local health care system.
“The redevelopment of Peel Memorial— including Brampton’s much-needed second Emergency Department—will be a monumental step forward, expanding access to emergency care and other vital services needed in our region,” said Dr. Frank Martino. “We are grateful to those who helped make Holi Gala a resounding success. Your support will help ensure more patients can receive the vital care they need.”
Holi Gala was made possible through generous sponsor support: Presenting Sponsor, BVD Group; Dinner Sponsor, In n Out Car Wash and Detailing Centre; Cocktail Sponsor, CIBC; Centrepiece Sponsor, Echelon Insurance; Valet Sponsor, Hunter Express; Photobooth Sponsor, Homelife Miracle Realty.

PLANTED EXPO TORONTO 2025
The Planted Expo, held in Toronto on May 11 and 12, 2025, brought together over 150 innovative vegan businesses, making it the largest plant-based event in North America. This year’s expo was a vibrant showcase of cutting-edge plant-based foods, sustainable lifestyle products, and forward-thinking wellness trends. Thousands of attendees— from health-conscious individuals to curious newcomers—explored a dynamic mix of local and international vendors offering everything from dairy-free treats and meat alternatives to eco-friendly beauty products and household goods.
For Ontario’s South Asian community, the Planted Expo offered a unique opportunity to connect cultural traditions with modern wellness. Pam Pabla Unshakable Leadership:
on Building Trust, Empowering Others, and Protecting What Matters Most
Can you share a bit about your professional journey and what inspired you to pursue a career in the insurance industry?
My journey in the insurance industry has been both meaningful and deeply rewarding. With over 25 years of experience, I have had the opportunity to serve in various roles—from client service and claims advising to leadership, education, and business ownership. Since opening my agency in 2018, my team and I remain committed to helping individuals, families, and business owners protect what matters most to them.
Witnessing insurance’s real impact during life’s most unexpected moments inspired me to pursue this path. Insurance is not just about policies—it is about people. It promises to provide support, guidance, and peace of mind when it matters most. That purpose continues to guide everything I do.
Over the years, I have remained committed to advancing the profession. I taught Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) courses with the Insurance Institute of Canada, helping future professionals build the skills and values needed to serve others with care and integrity. I have also been honoured to represent the profession as an Insurance Ambassador.

Health insurance is a key part of protecting your well-being. Please help our readers understand Ontario’s various types of health insurance coverage and how someone might choose the right option for their needs.
Absolutely. In Ontario, while we’re fortunate to have provincial health coverage through OHIP, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s where additional health insurance comes in. Individuals can explore a variety of plans that offer coverage for things like prescription drugs, dental care, vision, paramedical services, and even private or semi-private hospital rooms. There are also options for personal health plans and executivestyle coverage tailored to business owners or self-employed individuals.
Choosing the right plan comes down to understanding your lifestyle, current health needs, and gaps in your coverage. I encourage people to ask questions, review their budget, and think long-term. A good insurance advisor will walk you through the options and help you select a plan that gives you flexibility and peace of mind.
Supplemental health insurance can offer extra support beyond what OHIP covers. What are some of its top benefits, and who should seriously consider adding this type of coverage?
Supplemental health insurance is really about protecting your lifestyle and your choices. While OHIP covers many essential services, it doesn’t include everything—especially regarding everyday health needs. That’s where supplemental coverage steps in, offering support for prescription drugs, dental care, vision, mental health services, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and more.
Think of it as a customized health safety net—giving you the freedom to choose the care you want when you need it without worrying about the financial burden. It benefits self-employed professionals, retirees, young families, and even students starting independently.
Supplemental health insurance is a powerful way to stay ahead of health expenses and protect your savings if you value wellness, independence, and peace of mind. After all, your health is your greatest asset— protecting it means protecting your future.
In today’s world, families are more aware of the financial impact a serious illness can have. How can critical illness insurance provide the support people need during such a life-changing time?
A serious illness can change everything in an instant. That is why critical illness insurance is so important. It provides a tax-free lump sum that helps ease the financial pressure so you can focus on what truly matters — your health and your family.
Whether it covers out-of-pocket medical expenses, helps with everyday bills, or allows you to take time off work to recover, this protection gives you choices. It is not just about money. It is about time, comfort, and peace of mind during some of life’s most difficult moments.
At its heart, critical illness insurance is about being prepared and feeling supported. It allows families to move forward with confidence, knowing they will not have to face a health challenge alone. It is one of the most thoughtful ways to protect the future.

Many people may not fully understand disability insurance. Can you explain the types of coverage available and why it is so essential for anyone who may face a health concern that affects their ability to work?
Disability insurance is one of the most important forms of protection because it helps safeguard your income if an illness or injury prevents you from working. Your income supports everything—your home, family, and future—so protecting it is essential.
There are different types of disability coverage. Some plans offer short-term benefits for temporary situations, while others provide long-term support if you cannot return to work for an extended period. Each type is designed to help cover your daily living expenses so you can focus on recovery without the added stress of financial worries.
I always say that your ability to earn an income is one of your greatest assets. Disability insurance gives you peace of mind, knowing that you have support even if life takes an unexpected turn. It is about planning and staying strong during uncertain times.
The insurance world can sometimes feel overwhelming for people. How do you help your clients feel informed, confident, and supported when making insurance decisions?
My goal is always to make insurance simple, caring, and straightforward. I understand that insurance can initially feel confusing, but with the proper guidance, it becomes a powerful tool to protect what matters most. I take the time to listen and understand my client’s needs and explain coverage in a way that is easy to understand and meaningful to them.
Education is key. I want every person I speak with to walk away feeling confident and empowered about their decisions. I believe in building relationships, not transactions. That means offering honest advice, being available to answer questions, and always keeping their best interest in everything that I do.
When people feel supported, they make strong choices for themselves and their families. That is what real peace of mind looks like, and I strive to deliver it daily.
Many homeowners may not fully understand the purpose of mortgage insurance. Can you explain what it is, how it works, and why homeowners need to consider, especially those buying their first home?
Mortgage insurance protects your loved ones from financial hardship if something unexpected happens to you. It provides a tax-free benefit that the beneficiary can use to help pay down or pay off the remaining mortgage balance in case of a critical illness, disability, or death.
For many families, the home is more than just a property— it is a place of comfort, stability, and security. Mortgage insurance helps ensure that even in the most difficult times, your family is not left with the burden of large monthly payments or even the risk of losing their home.
This coverage is essential for first-time homeowners who are building their financial foundation. It offers peace of mind and a layer of protection that allows you to focus on living life confidently, knowing your home and your family are supported no matter what life brings.
Life insurance is key to protecting your family’s future. Why is it so important to have life insurance, and how can someone choose between term and permanent life coverage?
Life insurance is one of the most powerful ways to protect your loved ones. It provides financial security and peace of mind, ensuring that your family can maintain their lifestyle, cover outstanding debts, and focus on healing—not hardship—in the event of an unexpected loss.
There are two main types of life insurance: term and permanent. Term life insurance protects for a set period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years. It’s often chosen for its affordability and simplicity, making it an excellent option for those with short- to medium-term needs, like paying off a mortgage or securing income replacement during the working years.
On the other hand, permanent life insurance is designed to last a lifetime. It offers long-term protection and can build cash value over time. This makes it an ideal choice for those looking to leave a legacy, fund future expenses like education or estate planning, or ensure lifelong coverage.
Choosing the right solution depends on your goals, stage of life, and family’s needs. My team and I are here to guide clients through every step, helping them make informed, confident decisions that bring lasting protection and peace of mind.
“Life insurance is not just about what happens someday — it is about protecting the life you are building today and every tomorrow that follows.”

With changes in the housing market, what should homeowners consider when choosing home insurance to make sure they are fully protected from unexpected damage or loss?
Home insurance is more than just a requirement — it is a key part of protecting your home, your belongings, and peace of mind. As the housing market changes and home values shift, homeowners must ensure their coverage keeps pace.
When selecting a home insurance policy, I encourage people to look at more than just the basic coverage. It is about understanding what is included, such as protection against fire, water damage, theft, and personal liability. You also want to ensure the coverage reflects your home’s current rebuilding costs, not just its market value.
Optional coverage, like sewer backup or overland water, can also provide added peace of mind, depending on where you live. Solutions are available for those with high-value belongings or home-based businesses to ensure proper protection.
Home insurance is about feeling secure, knowing that your family, your investment, and future are protected if something unexpected happens. It is a smart step toward financial stability and a strong foundation for life.
A
business owner must have the right insurance coverage. Can you explain the different types of business insurance available and why entrepreneurs need to assess their risks and protect their business
with the right coverage?
Business insurance is vital to building and protecting what you have worked so hard to create. Every business is unique, so the coverage should reflect the specific risks involved in your operations.
There are several types of business insurance to consider. Commercial property insurance helps protect your building equipment inventory and contents. Commercial general liability insurance helps cover costs related to third-party injury or property damage. Professional liability, also known as errors and omissions insurance, is important for businesses that provide advice or services. For businesses with vehicles, there is commercial auto insurance. And if you employ staff, you may need coverage that supports your obligations as an employer.
Assessing your risks and having the proper protection in place helps prevent minor setbacks from becoming significant financial challenges. Business insurance provides stability and confidence, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on growth while knowing they are protected from the unexpected.
For
Protecting against potential risks is essential for small service businesses. The right insurance coverage provides financial protection and allows business owners to operate with confidence and peace of mind. 9 10 11
small businesses, especially those in the service industry, what types of insurance are most important to help guard against potential risks, and how can business owners make sure they are getting the best value?
Some of the most essential types of coverage include commercial general liability, which helps cover the legal and/or medical costs if a client or third party is injured or experiences property damage related to your business. Professional liability insurance is also valuable, especially for companies that provide advice consulting or services. Property insurance can help protect your equipment, tools, or office space, whether you own or lease it.
To get the best value, business owners should review their coverage regularly, especially as their operations grow or change. Working with a trusted insurance advisor can help you understand what is necessary and what is optional and how to tailor a plan that fits your needs and your budget.
Smart planning today helps protect your business tomorrow, allowing you to focus on delivering excellent service and building lasting success.
As the author of an upcoming book on leadership, what inspired you to write about this topic, and what do you hope readers will take away from it?
This book reflects my personal and professional journey, which was shaped by leading a team, building a business, and walking through seasons that required strength, faith, and unwavering commitment. Over the years, I have learned that leadership is not about status or position. Rather, it is about how you show up, how you serve, and how you make a difference in the lives of others.
I felt a deep calling to share the principles that have guided me—accountability, responsibility, and faithfulness. These values have helped me grow as a leader and remain grounded in every decision. I hope that by sharing these lessons, others will feel empowered to step confidently and clearly into their leadership journey.
This book is filled with real stories, timeless truths, and practical tools to help readers lead with purpose and impact. It is for anyone who wants to grow and lead with the heart and create a lasting legacy — not just in business, but in life.

What has been one of the most fulfilling parts of your career so far, both personally and professionally?
One of the most fulfilling parts of my career has been the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. Whether helping a young family protect their future by supporting a business owner with the right coverage or guiding someone through a difficult season, I find purpose in knowing that what we do truly matters.
Professionally, I am proud of building a successful insurance agency that focuses on care education and trust. As a Chartered Insurance Professional and the Award-Winning Author of Unshakable Leadership, I have had the privilege of sharing my knowledge and values with clients and the community. Leading a team that believes in putting people first and watching them grow has been incredibly rewarding.
Personally, the most meaningful moments are the ones where clients become like family, and I get to walk alongside them through life’s journey. I have learned that success is not only measured by numbers but also by the lives you touch, the relationships you build, and the legacy you leave behind.
“True fulfillment comes from knowing that every conversation, every policy, and every decision is impacting lives in a meaningful way. My greatest success is not in what I have achieved — but in the legacy of trust, care, and leadership my team and I continue to build daily.”
What can we expect from your upcoming book, and what is next for you in both your professional journey and personal growth?
This book represents a defining moment in my journey. It captures the essence of growth through resilience and the strength that comes from choosing integrity over comfort.
Readers can expect a deeply meaningful and action-oriented experience that challenges them to reflect, lead, and live with intention. It is not just a book to read but a guide to follow as they build the kind of life and leadership that creates lasting impact.
Professionally, I am focused on deepening the level of care and support that offer through my insurance agency. My vision is to continue building a team and client experience centred on trust, clarity, and service. I am also looking forward to new speaking opportunities, collaborations, and leadership development projects that will expand the reach of this message.
On a personal level, I remain committed to growing in faith, strengthening my family foundation, and living a life that reflects purpose and gratitude. When you lead with your values and walk with vision, every new season becomes an opportunity to rise.
The journey ahead is full of purpose, and I am excited to continue serving, leading, and inspiring — one life, one chapter, and one conversation at a time.
“This new season is filled with purpose, passion, and possibility. My journey forward is a calling to lead with vision, influence with integrity, and build a legacy rooted in faith, excellence, and impactful leadership.”
TMU RESEARCHER AWARDED POLANYI PRIZE FOR REVOLUTIONARY
FARSHAD MORADI KASHKOOLI
DEVELOPS A NEW CANCER TREATMENT THAT COULD REPLACE NEED FOR CONVENTIONAL CHEMOTHERAPY
By Michelle Grady
AToronto Metropolitan University (TMU) researcher has received Ontario’s most prestigious early-career research award for pioneering a novel cancer treatment approach that could transform the way cancer is treated.
Farshad Moradi Kashkooli, a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Banting postdoctoral fellow at TMU's Department of Physics, has been awarded the 2024 Polanyi Prize in Physics for his innovative research in cancer treatment through targeted drug delivery.
With over 1.5 million Canadians living with cancer, Moradi Kashkooli's research addresses a critical need for more effective treatment options. His work focuses on developing non-invasive alternatives to traditional cancer treatments like surgery, radiation and chemotherapy using ultrasound waves to deliver nano-drugs within the human body.
This is the first time therapeutic ultrasound and nanomedicine have been used to target tumours directly.
HOW IT WORKS
Moradi Kashkooli’s method uses sound waves to activate tiny medicine-filled particles directly at cancer sites in the body.
The sound waves act like a trigger, causing these particles to release their medicine exactly where it is needed.
This approach not only ensures the cancer drugs are delivered precisely, but also helps it to spread more effectively throughout the tumour and be better internalized by cancer cells.
“My work is driven by a deep commitment to transforming cancer care through treatments that are more targeted, effective and less harmful,” says Moradi Kashkooli.
“Although originally designed for cancer, this drug delivery platform also holds promise for a wide range of other medical conditions. If this research helps even one person live a better life, that will be my greatest success.”
What sets his research apart is its precision in attacking cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue.
This greatly improves treatment efficacy and minimizes the side effects commonly associated with traditional chemotherapy treatments.
Moradi Kashkooli's work shows that ultrasound can serve as a safe, non-invasive modality for triggering targeted drug release.
This research brings together expertise from different fields–physics, engineering and computer modelling–and works with doctors and researchers from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and under the supervision of Michael Kolios and Jahan Tavakkoli.
This collaborative approach aims to refine the treatment method for future clinical trials, making sure it is both safe and effective.
FURTHER IMPACT
This research has implications beyond cancer therapy, offering a versatile platform that could advance drug delivery strategies across a wide range of medical applications.
By solving problems that make current treatments less successful, this new approach could give doctors better options for treating cancer.
“Farshad Moradi Kashkooli's groundbreaking research doesn't just advance scientific knowledge, but has the potential to fundamentally change how we treat cancer and improve the quality of life of countless patients,” says David Cramb, dean, Faculty of Science. “The Polanyi Prize recognition is a very well-deserved acknowledgment of his innovative approach to one of medicine's greatest challenges."
The Government of Ontario is honouring the province’s leading researchers for their outstanding contributions in the Nobel Prize fields of chemistry, economic sciences, literature, physics, and physiology or medicine. The Polanyi Prizes represent Ontario’s most prestigious research awards, recognizing excellence and impact across these disciplines.

SUKHBIR
Sukhbir Jawandha’s interest in golf started at the age of two when his father began teaching him how to swing in their backyard. His passion for the sport grew even more between the ages of five and ten when the father-son duo would go to the driving range to play at least once or twice a month.
Eventually, Jawandha’s father, who played field hockey back in India, got him enrolled in this sport and consequently, golf temporarily took a back seat for the next five years. While listening to Jawandha’s story, it becomes evident that as a young boy, his interests mirrored those of his father. When asked to reflect on this assertion, Jawandha explains that his father discovered golf while he was playing field hockey back in India.

“The only people that played golf in India during that time were army people and their golf course used to be right beside the field where my father and his teammates played field hockey and sometimes [the golfers] would hit like an errand shot and it would come into the field and [my dad and his teammates] would get upset because it would slow their field hockey game down.

Later, when he was gone on a vacation, he and his friend encountered a golf course and eventually, my dad really started enjoying the game,” explains Jawandha.
At age 15, Jawandha, who has always been an athletic individual, got back into golf – and since then – there’s been no looking back for the 29-yearold BC native. At 16, Jawandha joined a performance golf academy where he enrolled in a full season training program and fell in love with practicing to improve his game. In the following 1.5 years, Jawandha lowered his handicap by 28 strokesfrom breaking 100 for the first time ever to shooting even par 15 months later.
“I would wait for my mom to come home from work so she could drop me off at the golf course so I could practice for 2-4 hours after school every day. In the summertime, I would practice 8-12 hours a day,” explains Jawandha, who injured his back as a junior golfer.
Although the work ethic helped him achieve great success in a short period of time, the pain forced him to take a year off.
While he obtained treatments from various physical therapists and chiropractors, it was to no avail as his back problems persisted. Eventually, Jawandha realized that his back was hurting due to an incorrect manner in which he was swinging his golf club.
After consulting and learning about a few different ways to swing correctly from a close friend, Jawandha and this friend took a threemonth trip down to California and learned a slew of golf tips and tricks from some seasoned coaches. It was this trip and the knowledge that he obtained during it that inspired him to become a golf coach.

“About four to five years ago, when I wanted to start to coach, I didn’t see many people from the South Asian community playing golf. Then, just before COVID, I started to notice that a lot more people from our community were getting into it. And then as soon as COVID hit, a lot of people had nothing else to do, so they all tried golf and now so many people play it,” explains Jawandha.
Despite their interest in the game, many South Asian individuals needed and wanted golf lessons as well as guidance but were unsure of where to turn.
This changed “as soon as they saw [Jawandha] because they were more inclined to come and learn as much as they could” from someone they could relate to.
Asked to explain what he enjoys about being a coach, Jawandha says that he likes watching people learn and improve. As someone who knows “what it feels like to hit a great golf shot”, Jawandha, who currently resides in Ontario, adds that he wants others to experience similar feelings. “There are also a lot of health benefits linked to golf. For example, you’re outdoors and in nature and you tend to do a lot of walking. It’s also great for any type of relationship-building, whether that is between parents and kids or spouses,” says Jawandha.
He adds that unlike many other sports, golf is an individual sport in which one aims to hit great shots with precision. Besides this, it enables individuals to develop skills based around hard work and patience. Interestingly, Jawandha likens golf to real life because “if you hit one bad shot and get upset over it actually impacts the rest of your shots.” He adds, “if you get emotionally unstable after one or two bad shots, it’s like a domino effect where it messes up your next shot, so it’s kind of like your day. If you start off your day with one or two things that upset you, the rest of your day is most likely ruined. So, [golf] really has a lot of parallels with life and how you deal with problems.”
Talking about the changes that the sport has gone through, Jawandha explains that unlike before, golf is becoming more accessible and diversified than earlier when it was considered to be “a rich man’s game.”
Indeed, unlike before, when private golf clubs ruled the roost, there are now plenty of familyowned courses where individuals are not expected to adhere to a particular dress code. Jawandha credits Tiger Woods as someone who was able to shine a light on the sport and likewise influence a lot of the positive changes that we are seeing today.
“Tiger Woods came on to the golfing scene in 1997 and played in the PGA Tour and he just won every tournament he played, and people were shocked.”
In the same year, a new project called the First Tee Program took birth. With an aim to make golf more accessible to more people, including marginalized communities, former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Fenchon inaugurated the program with the support of various golf organizations.
According to Jawandha, after Tiger Woods came in and ruled the game, there was a realization that expanding the reach of golf as a sport could not only help give opportunities to a variety of individuals, but it could also help in finding more great talents. Despite its increased popularity, Jawandha admits that the sport can still be misunderstood, labelled and stereotyped.
“I
When it comes to golf, it seems like a lot of people mistakenly assume that it is not an action-oriented sport, unlike soccer and basketball, which are the typical sports that people want their kids to play. Golf might be different, but it does require movement and athleticism as well
think golf can easily be overlooked or labelled as an old person’s game or a slower game. I’ve interacted with athletes in our community who are like ‘hey man, I’ve been great at all these other sports and I was always a star player, but now I’m trying to play [golf] and I’m frustrated because I can’t figure it out’ so it’s important to remember that playing golf is not as easy as it looks,” explains Jawandha.
Asked about what excites him currently, Jawandha explains that he is “getting a lot more into performance coaching for juniors” as he aims to help and coach kids from the South Asian community to be able to play golf at a high level.
Expanding on the benefits of golf for kids, Jawandha explains that kids learn skills like patience, strength and discipline while also using their mental skills to figure out how to hit the golf ball in the best way possible.
“When it comes to golf, it seems like a lot of people mistakenly assume that it is not an actionoriented sport, unlike soccer and basketball, which are the typical sports that people want their kids to play. Golf might be different, but it does require movement and athleticism as well.”
Elaborating on this idea, Jawandha says, “Basically whenever someone wants to hit a golf ball, they want to hit it far and to be able to do that, you have to use the rotational speed of your body.”
In other words, an individual has to be able to properly engage their shoulders, legs, and core in order to make a respectable shot.
Talking about his current clientele, Jawandha says that he works with a lot of beginner adults and also high-performance kids between the ages of 7-18. According to Jawandha, the kids in the group are those that want to go on and compete in tournaments. Working with these kids within the capacity of a sport like golf is beneficial to both Jawandha and his students as he is able to connect and communicate with them on an individual basis. While he is able to ask them questions about their everyday life and school, he is also able to teach them how certain ways of thinking or particular emotions can have an effect not only on their game, but on their school life as well.
“I love the idea of being able to teach and plant seeds in kids’ minds and positively influence how they think or react to certain things and situations.”
“[As a coach], I’m able to share my own experiences, and what I’ve learned and pass it on.”
Evidently, this is one of the many rewarding parts of Jawandha’s job.
“The goal is to have these kids get better and compete, but I think if you can also become a better person through playing the game, that’s even better. It’s even more fulfilling for me, regardless of the outcome of their competitions.

1 . Tell us about your background and what inspired you to start Nutritionwize Diet Clinic?
This passion for helping others see the magic of nutrition ignited in Manmeet at a young age, while building a new career and family life in a new country against the face of many battles. Born into a traditional Indian-Sikh family, Manmeet Behl was one of the first females in her family to acquire a university degree and higher-level education. On the basis of her exemplary academic and professional experience in the field of Food & Nutrition in India, she achieved the opportunity to immigrate to Canada where the real journey of her career as a Registered Dietitian began. Today, Manmeet is also a Certified Diabetes Educator, Cancer Prevention Educator, and internationally qualified Food Safety Trainer. Working in a variety of settings, Manmeet realized how passionate she is about educating others on the power of nutrition and wellness.
Through her experiences, Manmeet saw that the diets of Canadians are not meeting the recommended nutrition requirements. As a result, an increasing number of people are becoming unhealthy and overweight, which is a major factor for the cause of chronic diseases like diabetes and high cholesterol. Compelled to bring awareness to this, Manmeet along with her two co-directors took the initiative to create Nutritionwize Diet Clinic and its signature Nutritionwize Education Programs, which educate patients on chronic disease management and prevention. Manmeet also dedicated her time to volunteer as Chief Dietitian on STOP Diabetes Foundation. In this role, she has led several campaigns such as the “What’s in your Thali?” initiative at local Gurudwaras to educate the Sikh community on healthy Langar food choices.
Till date, Manmeet and her team have helped over 10,000 patients heal their bodies with the goodness of food.
2 . What types of services do you provide and are any of them customized?
All the services provided at Nutritionwize Diet Clinic can be personalized to the wants and needs of each individual, within direct guidance of a Registered Dietitian. Our nutrition counselling involves one-to-one sessions in which clients are provided with education and customized meal plans to help achieve the goals they desire. Meal plans can be customized to suit the individuals’ cultural background and foods to ensure that the changes made to their diets are not only comfortable, but also sustainable beyond the sessions as well.
Additional services are the Nutritionwize Education Programs, consisting of 5 -4 sessions each. These programs cater to specific areas such as Children’s Nutrition, Cancer Prevention, Heart Health, Holistic & Medically Supervised Weight Loss Programs and many more. These programs allow for clients to gain in-depth knowledge on the designated topics and learn how to implement good nutrition as an aid for better health, with many tools such as meal plans and take-home resources.
One of its kind, the Body Composition Analysis test at Nutritionwize Diet Clinic, is the magic key that opens the door to all the answers needed to understand our bodies. In 60 seconds, the test provides answers on what your body is made up of; such as fat mass, lean body mass, water weight, visceral fat, basal metabolic rate and more. With these answers, Registered Dietitians can customize the steps down to each calorie in order to achieve your health goals easily and efficiently.
Our Registered Dietitians at Nutritionwize Diet Clinic speak a variety of languages, including English, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Afrikaans, Arabic, and can also provide sessions with your cultural background in mind. Whether you seek the comfort of your home or the welcoming environment of the clinic, you can meet with our Registered Dietitians virtually or in person! Nutritionwize Diet Clinic accepts all major insurance plans that provide coverage for Registered Dietitian services as well.
3 . What is the difference between a Nutritionist and Registered Dietitian?
Nutritionwize Diet Clinic’s team consists of Registered Dietitians and Certified Diabetes Educators. In Ontario, Registered Dietitian is a protected title and is provincially regulated, meaning that Registered Dietitians are held accountable to uphold the highest standards of education and ethics. The title ‘Registered Dietitian’ can only be used by those who are legally licensed as such. On the other hand, Nutritionists are not held accountable to any regulatory bodies in Ontario and can have varying levels of education as well. In the setting of Nutritionwize Diet Clinic, our Registered Dietitians work hand in hand with Physicians to provide utmost care to all patients.
4 . Under what circumstances do people start looking for a Registered Dietitian?
Foods embody immense power to not only heal our bodies, but also prevent countless diseases from occurring within our bodies too. This is what drove Manmeet to bring awareness to the community about how the right food and nutrition can benefit you. However, the general trend is that most people only start seeking a Registered Dietitian when they discover they have health issues such as Diabetes or are in great need of weight loss or gain. At any given point in your health journey, Registered Dietitians can be of great help to develop and reach a healthy lifestyle. Manmeet strongly believes that prevention is always better than cure, but Nutritionwize Diet Clinic can help you with both!
5 . What are some of the key health issues that are specific to South Asians and how does nutrition play an important role?
South Asian populations are prone to developing particular health issues over others, such as diabetes and high cholesterol. Due to their genetic predisposition, South Asians are far more likely to develop Diabetes, and South Asian diets also make a significant impact too. These diets tend to be rich in saturated fats, fried items, sugar, and refined carbohydrates, while having low fibre, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Such diets can lead to various health issues such as simply because the foods are made up in this way.
Tradition is of great importance to South Asian culture, and one of the best ways to share and manifest that tradition is through its delicious foods. However, these traditions can sometimes be misunderstood as myths about foods that following can actually lead to less health benefits. For example, some common beliefs in the South Asian communities are that brown sugar is a healthier option than white sugar, consuming yogurt at night is poor for your health, and that consuming a lot of sugar can cause Diabetes and fuel Cancer. This is a crucial part of Nutritionwize Diet Clinic’s approach; our Registered Dietitians provide education on common misconceptions such as these to encourage patients to make wise and informed food choices.
As Diwali comes close, South Asians who celebrate it around the world celebrate its significance through prayers, large feasts, and sharing delicious food sweets as gifts. It is important to ensure eating healthy is still maintained during this auspicious time, by following tips such as consuming sweets in moderation and limiting deep fried dishes such as pooris, pakoras, samosas and more.
6 . Walk us through some of the steps involved when putting together a nutrition plan for a client.
Nutrition counselling for every individual involves a comprehensive nutrition assessment, in which a detailed analysis on current dietary habits and needs is conducted by a Registered Dietitian. This includes an in-depth analysis of your diet, such as common foods you eat, meal timings, and the relation of diet and illness. Additionally, Registered Dietitians will evaluate any medications or supplements you take, along with their food interactions. This careful assessment will allow the Registered Dietitian to provide you a personalized meal plan and nutrition recommendations based on their expertise and your goals.
7 . Approximately how long does it take to make changes to existing nutrition habits?
Everyone’s bodies are different and have unique nutrition requirements as well. A meal plan that may work wonders on one individual may do little
on another, so nutrition is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution. Fortunately, there is so much we can do with nutrition that different options can help achieve the same results! This is why making changes to existing nutrition habits can take some time to implement and see results. Nutritionwize Diet Clinic’s Registered Dietitians provide clientcentered care, meaning we follow the pace of the client to ensure that the adopted healthy eating habits are long term and sustainable.
BMI is a great tool to assess one’s health, however there can be some discrepancy in using that tool as well. Two individuals could have the same BMI, but have a completely different body composition. The Body Composition Analysis test at Nutritionwize Diet Clinic allows us to determine your individual Basal Metabolic Rate. This is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions. Registered Dietitians then utilize this number as a baseline to set SMART Goals and create realistic timelines to achieve your desired health goals.
9 . Tell us about your future plans?
Seeing how many individuals Nutritionwize Diet Clinic has helped till date is always an inspiration to spread the magic of nutrition even further. Manmeet anticipates to see Nutritionwize Diet Clinic at several locations across the Greater Toronto Area by 2024 , and throughout the province of Ontario soon as well. Nutritionwize’s Registered Dietitians are currently providing education in +20 medical clinics.
Additionally, in September 2023 , Nutritionwize Diet Clinic inaugurated its second and largest location at 170 Sandalwood Parkway East, Brampton, ON. With this location also serving as Nutritionwize’s Corporate Office, the initial location at 9960 Airport Road, Brampton, ON continues to accept patients as well! Nearly all our services have now been expanded to be available both in-person and virtually as well to allow for ease of access to all those in need of nutrition guidance. Many more programs and initiatives are also in the works for the upcoming year to ensure Manmeet and the Nutritionwize team spread nutrition awareness throughout all communities.
8 . What is the approach Nutritionwize Diet Clinic uses towards helping clients maintain healthy food choices and achieve their goals?
Seeing our clients achieve their goals, health and personal, is always a proud moment for Nutritionwize Diet Clinic. It is a reflection of not only our clients’ commitment and dedication to their health, but also our Registered Dietitians’ unwavering support! Manmeet and her team empower clients through sessions in a way that allows them to manage their diets and nutrition successfully beyond the supervision of a Registered Dietitian. In each session, patients leave the room having learned new information and personalized recommendations to further guide their food choices.
Something as simple as a cheat day is incredibly valuable to individual’s making changes to their diet; we recognize that cravings are real and you want to munch on some snacks! Allowing for those cravings to be present and fulfilling them while following a healthy diet is something we always encourage. After all, a happy stomach is a healthy body. Doing this allows clients to maintain healthy food choices after completing sessions with a Registered Dietitian because they will not feel the need to give up and resort to unhealthier food options, falling into the trap of yo-yo dieting. Manmeet always encourages sustainable and impactful lifestyle changes.

Mamta’s Lovely Mustache
is a unique book that helps children address bullying and overcoming fear by believing in themselves.
Sometimes, the most fascinating part of a book is the story behind it. For me, this book is deeply personal—an account of my own healing journey behind the scenes. It’s not just a story for children, but a reflection of my experiences and the resilience I discovered along the way. This book has been a lifelong dream. Ever since I was a young girl, I promised myself that one day I would write it. What I didn’t anticipate, however, was that when the time finally came, I would face an unexpected challenge—a mild traumatic brain injury left me unable to read or write. What makes this book so special is its message—it’s more than a story. It teaches children about self-love, selfawareness, and cultivating the courage from within. By helping children understand their worth and strength, this book offers tools to combat bullying and build confidence. These lessons are not just for the playground but for life.
Through storytelling, I found a way forward. Even though I struggled to read and write, I leaned on the fact that our brains are natural storytelling machines. Storytelling is not only medicinal, but it is also profoundly healing for mental health. It gave me the strength to endure one of the most difficult times in my life.
Storytelling helped me process my emotions, reduce feelings of isolation, and create a sense of purpose and meaning in my journey. It allowed me to reframe my struggles, giving me a sense of control over my narrative and enabling me to see myself as resilient instead of broken. This act of sharing and reshaping my story became a key part of my healing process.
My memory became my greatest ally. Despite my limitations, I used it to piece together my ideas and, over time, I gained the skills to read and write again. I transitioned from editing in my mind to editing on paper, a process that felt transformative.
Storytelling is a beautiful way to reclaim and rearrange the narrative you’re in and change the outcome of your experience.
Storytelling also illustrated to me the power of creativity and healing.
