Most people have heard about Safe Haven Family Shelter either because of a volunteer opportunity or event or because the agency has been around for over 38 years, working diligently to provide shelter, housing and services to families experiencing homelessness in the Greater Nashville area. Utilizing best practices and a network of partnerships, Safe Haven served a record number of families in 2021 and has provided assistance to thousands of families in our community since we began our work in 1984.

Our vision at Safe Haven is clear: eliminate family homelessness in Middle Tennessee.

As with most visions, achieving that goal is easier said than done – especially during a pandemic. This Annual Report sheds light on who we are, what we do, and how our organization met a moment in a time that provided the community members we serve with unprecedented challenges.

There is a feeling at Safe Haven that , with your support , we can and will not only move more families experiencing homelessness into housing but empower families with the tools and resources they need to break the cycle of homelessness.

I believe it is everyone’s responsibility to find ways to make the world a better place. With the work of our staff, our Board and Council members, our donors, and our volunteers, Safe Haven is trying to do just that.

For 38 years, Safe Haven has served as the premier shelter-to-housing program in Middle Tennessee that accommodates families experiencing homelessness.

Safe Haven serves couples with children, single parents and multigenerational families with children up to 18 years of age. Transformative services focused on housing and employment provide families with the resources to become self-sufficient and successful.

Our Programs Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Safe Haven’s work to keep families experiencing homelessness together and move them into housing as soon as possible has not wavered. Safe Haven Family Shelter uses the Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix (ASSM), an assessment tool to evaluate the capacity and needs of people experiencing homelessness. The tool evaluates areas like housing, employment, income, food, health care and more. Data is collected periodically to show changes over time. According to the ASSM:

Our Impact

A CLIENT’S STORY

I hope sharing my story gives you an idea of the hope and help provided by Safe Haven Family Shelter. My mom passed away over two years ago.

The loss of a parent is huge. She was my biggest support system. It was a turbulent time in my life where it felt like I lost my faith – physically, mentally and emotionally. After moving to Clarksville from Nashville, and then back again, we had nothing. I tried to get stabilized, had some funds saved up for hotels, but the money ran out, and I knew it was going to get tougher.

Luckily, my older sister took in my children just as we had to move out of the hotel. I didn’t want them to experience living in the car or the sacrifices I had to make for them. My sister didn’t have the space for all of us, so I had to put my children first. It was heartbreaking. I’ve never been away from my children before. But with her helping them, I could try to rebuild our life so we could all be together again. In the spring of 2021, I lived in my car for a

few months during the pandemic. I would go to restrooms to clean up and wash clothes. Every day, I would try to find a job and get something done ... try to find temporary support.

In my research, I found Safe Haven. My case manager was amazing and supported me every step of the way. We started working on applications to get into housing. Once I had my own place, I was able to get stabilized and find a job. I was able to bring my children back with me ... to our home. We are so blessed to be back together again. My daughter tells me that I am so strong. It is good that my children saw me demonstrate strength. My kids have learned never to give up. We had trials and tribulations, but we have experienced a blessing in the end.

With a Roaring ’20s theme that brought out all the glitz and glamour, the much-anticipated 12th annual Dancing for Safe Haven took place on October 30 raising a two-year total of $805,000. The event, presented by Community Health Systems, HCA Healthcare|TriStar Health, and K&L Gates, paired five Nashville notables with professional ballroom dancers who competed for Audience Favorite, Judges’ Favorite, and Fundraising Favorite.

At the event, the Safe Haven Hero Award was presented to the Taqueria del Sol Team for their dedication and support in raising over $250,000 at their annual A Taqueria Holiday event.

$86,000 Taqueria del Sol, with two locations in Nashville, spearheaded by Tony Halligan and Will Spiva, teamed again with platinum-selling singer/ songwriter Dierks Bentley to host its sixth annual “A Taqueria Holiday” fundraiser to support Safe Haven Family Shelter on December 6. The event raised $86,000! Taqueria del Sol Nashville donated 100% of the evening’s food and beverage proceeds. In addition, seven matching gifts generated an eight-fold total donation. Thank you to all who came out to dine in or order take out. We are beyond grateful to Tony Halligan, Will Spiva, and the whole Taqueria del Sol team for hosting this event. And a big thank you to the matching donors: Dierks and Cassidy Bentley, Anita Jamison and Mike Connell, Ross and Kaitlin Copperman, Brian and Sarah Layton, Vic and Liz Thomas, Taqueria del Sol Nashville, and Taqueria del Sol Atlanta.

Volunteers For 38 years, volunteers have worked side by side with Safe Haven providing numerous service hours and meals.

Volunteering has looked different recently due to the pandemic; but volunteers have stepped up to make sure families had food, supplies, learning resources, and more. Thank you to our volunteers who help empower our families, encourage hope, and create smiles during difficult times. Here are just a couple of examples of how volunteers made a difference in 2021 ...

BACK-TO-SCHOOL DRIVE:

Thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers, we were able to collect over 5,600 school supply items. Volunteers helped sort, organize, and deliver the school supplies to make sure 168 school-age children and youth had the items they needed to start the school year!

TRUNK OR TREAT VOLUNTEERS:

Volunteers play a key role in our Children’s Program by helping to provide enrichment experiences and activities. One example is “ Trunk or Treat,” held for Safe Haven families at Halloween.

Volunteers from the Junior League, Safe Haven Young Professionals Council, and more made sure families had a safe opportunity to trick or treat with their little ones.

The holiday season always reflects the very best spirit of giving at Safe Haven. With the help and support from donors and volunteers, Safe Haven is able to provide families with gifts at the holidays. In 2021, 141 donors sponsored 156 families (324 children) at the holidays. Eightythree volunteers provided 236 hours of service to help sort, organize, and wrap presents for families.

We want to say a special thank you to the staff (and their families) at Vaco for “Decking the Halls” at Safe Haven with holiday cheer!

They put up and decorated the tree at Safe Haven and provided a small, decorated tree for each of the families staying in shelter at the extended stay hotel.

IN 2021

We rely on item donations from our supporters to help make our families feel at home. In 2021, 6,560 items were donated. When families enter our program, we provide them with essential needs for staying in shelter like toiletries, cleaning supplies, new bedding and towels, etc. As families are moved into their own housing, we try to provide them with items to set up a home.

A household kit may include things like a microwave, a vacuum, a set of dishes and glasses, silverware and pots and pans, cleaning supplies, and a few other essential supplies needed to make the transition to housing as smooth and comfortable as possible.

The Birthday Club is a recurring donation program project created by the Young Professionals Council at Safe Haven Family Shelter in August 2021 to help make birthdays special for children experiencing homelessness. The monthly donations support the children’s program and help provide birthday celebrations for children in Safe Haven’s program. Birthday boxes are delivered to the family so that the parent(s) can wrap the gifts and decorate for the child. Thank you to our founding partners Piece of Mind Events, Seal Shield, and The Cupcake Collection for helping us give children a special birthday.
