Your support makes an impact.
The money raised at Dancing for Safe Haven helps us serve record numbers of families experiencing homelessness. That means your support helps give more families a place to call home.
In 2022, Safe Haven served 341 families and housed 137 families. More than just numbers, these stats represent home, stability, and often safety for families.

For 39 years, Safe Haven Family Shelter has kept its promise of keeping families together. Safe Haven focuses on providing the foundation of home, helping families obtain affordable housing. We provide case management, workforce development, children’s education/enrichment programs and connect families with community resources. We could not do this work without you.
We hope you continue to learn more about Safe Haven and find additional ways to get involved after tonight!

BEGLEY SCHADE IN BILLA AND BUSTER – THE CIRCLE OF KINDNESS

Tonight, we celebrate with deep gratitude for what you-our cherished partners–are helping this organization to accomplish. For 39 years, Safe Haven has provided shelter-to-housing programs and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness. Last year, Safe Haven served 320 families and housed 137. We are on track to meet our goal of housing 150 families in 2023, and continuing to provide over 60 percent of rapid rehousing services for families in Nashville. Safe Haven, along with local and national community partners are working to build an equitable future where homelessness is rare, brief and nonrecurring for families. With a dedicated staff, board, volunteers and donors, we are poised for continued excellence and growth to successfully carry out our mission. Dancing for Safe Haven is one of Nashville’s most beloved events and brings our community in to celebrate and do good–together. Proceeds from tonight’s event will support our program strength and help us grow our impact in 2023.
Safe Haven is incredibly grateful for our celebrity dancers and their tireless efforts in fundraising, rehearsing and increasing awareness. Tonight, they will showcase their hard work, taking the dance floor to give families a place to call home.
Our outstanding co-chairs for the 2023 event have participated as dancers, and have been instrumental in supporting the overall fundraising and success. Our heartfelt thanks go to Harry Allen, Kearstin Patterson, Candice Reed, and Shane Tarleton for their excellent leadership.
I also want to also acknowledge the behind-the-scenes work that goes into Dancing for Safe Haven—from our sponsors, dancers, board of directors, staff and volunteers to our production company, BlueSky Filmworks, comprised of Stephen Hill, Brock Slagle, and Bradford Van Demark. Their professionalism and creativity along with the TNDV team ensures that this evening will be one to remember.
Tinti Moffat, our amazing event director has significantly elevated this event over the past two years. Her efforts, contributions and commitment are deeply appreciated. Staff members Rachael Wilkins, Allyson Bahr, Yen Lai, and Stacy Nunnally have also worked alongside Tinti to organize this year’s event.
If you are not a part of Safe Haven, I encourage you to get involved in the many ways to support our mission. For tonight, enjoy the show, dance on the dance floor, and know that you have made a difference in lives of families facing homelessness.
Thank you for being a part of our Safe Haven family.
Catherine Self Interim CEO, Safe Haven Family Shelter“YOU KNOW, EVERYONE NEEDS A PLACE THEY CAN CALL HOME! THEY NEED PEOPLE AND A PLACE TO GO WHICH IS THEIRS, A SAFE HAVEN. A PLACE TO FEEL PROTECTED, WHERE YOU ARE ACCEPTED.”

HERO AWARD
Dr. Pat McDonald exemplifies the meaning of a true Safe Haven hero. Her passion, impact and unwavering commitment are woven into the fabric of Safe Haven’s organizational history. Forty years ago, in 1983, Pat attended a meeting at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church to discuss the creation of a shelter for families experiencing homelessness. From that initial meeting, Pat was heavily involved in launching the organization, and her church members from Southminster Presbyterian joined in to support. Safe Haven opened its doors in March 1984 and was housed in the upstairs of St. Patrick’s in a space vacated by a parochial school. Pat began to coordinate volunteers from Southminster, and they came together to serve meals and stay overnight. When the new facility now known as Safe Haven Family Shelter was built, Pat and Southminster volunteers continued to serve monthly, and have done so for nearly 40 years.
Pat felt the need to serve from an early age. Growing up in a secure and loving middle class family in Decatur, GA, she recognized the privileges that she had that some children within her church and school unfortunately did not have. She attended Eckerd College where values were an important aspect of her education. It was then she was offered an opportunity to serve others and was also encouraged to evaluate her role in the world. While at Eckerd, she met and married Maury McDonald, Jr.- one of the most giving people she has ever met. She received her advanced degrees from Vanderbilt (which brought her to Nashville), MTSU, and University of Georgia.
Pat’s occupation as an Educational Psychologist exposed her to the multi-faceted needs of children experiencing poverty and homelessness, equipping her with the tools to create significant impact at Safe Haven. She and her late husband Maury worked in public schools, encountering students who transferred frequently or just disappeared. It was apparent that many of the children had no stable home waiting for them after school.
Over the years, Pat has been involved in many different facets of the organization, and one area that she has dedicated her focus and expertise is with the Children’s Program. She has provided tutoring and has served as a liaison in the classroom for Safe Haven’s children to ensure that they did not fall behind academically. She has also advocated and pushed for children experiencing poverty and homelessness to have equal access to learning. She established a fund at Safe Haven to provide access to enrichment and education opportunities for the children served.
Pat has impacted the lives of children and families through her dedication to supporting critical interventions that promote stability, academic development and hope for the parents and children served. She has always asked questions to enhance the quality of programs. She has made it her life’s work to deeply and wholeheartedly invest in Safe Haven’s mission. She has been a dear friend to Safe Haven’s staff, a loving supporter for our families, and a steadfast donor and volunteer. We wish Pat, her daughters Kelly and Carrie, along with her grandchildren the best as she starts her new chapter in California. We at Safe Haven are grateful for all she has done,. She will always be the hero of our hearts.

“HEROES ARE NOT GIANT STATUES FRAMED AGAINST A RED SKY. THEY ARE PEOPLE WHO SAY: THIS IS MY COMMUNITY, AND IT’S MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE IT BETTER.”

and its dedication to providing shelter for those experiencing homelessness in Middle Tennessee.
MEDHOST is committed to positively impacting community health, and we believe everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Through a wide range of clinical and financial tools, including an integrated EHR, we’ve helped hundreds of community hospitals recover from financial setbacks, improve operations, and return to caring for the friends, family, and neighbors who walk through their front doors.

Proud to support Safe Haven Family Shelter and its mission to house, support, empower and advocate for Middle Tennessee families experiencing homelessness.

Proud to always be in step with Safe Haven
