The Winner of Sariyer-Istanbul Street Stairs Design Competition by Seranit, 2010 Before creating the concept of project it is important to understand that region's history, socio-cultural and spatial structure. Rumeli Hisari is known for being the first Turkish Village of Istanbul Bosphorus. As a result of our research on the settlement pattern it was observed our study area continues its historical structure but was joint new and modern urbanization. In this context, our concept of Project, worthy to Istanbul which is European Capital of Culture 2010, is presented a synthesis of traditional and modern structures in the special Mübayacı Street. Development Plan that we took from Development Office of the Bosphorus was effective in the creation of our approach. According to plan, parcel facing design area which was zoning children’s garden directed our design approach. Even outside of our design area we could not be ignored proposal of children's garden. The second important point for us in the plan was the large number of registered buildings around the study area. This situation further strengthened our emphasis on the traditional structure. In the current situation, street's users are often those who live on the street. By means of children’s garden proposal that we have offered, utilization of street stairs will attract the population in approximately 100 m radius area. Thus according to calculations, utilization frequency of the stairs will grow 8%. Given this increase, our design was developed. The result of structured qualitative and quantitative evaluations, our design was developed in accordance with certain principles.

The Winner of Sariyer-Istanbul Street Stairs Design Competition by Seranit, 2010 Details of Project: All rises of steps in our design are 15 cm. According to pedestrian safety principle, steps’ runs are broad and continuous access is provided. It has been noted to be inviting street entrances by being broken steps to street. Given the importance of the other points is designing the garden and stairs as a whole. In reference to stairs keep them going in the garden and are permitted different play activities at created platforms due to the difference in elevation. Garden wall designed for children's safety is permeable with its hollow structure, dynamic with different heights and harmonic with the balance of each other. It was paying attention for lighting and seating unit not use to be prepared and to be solved compatible with design. According to principles of priorities of those living it was targeted to increase the relationship between people and street with semi-public areas created in front of the house entrance. It is important to be public of the street in view of the historicism of area. It was careful to be use of natural stone and wood on platforms for being compatible with the historical pattern. the composite storm water grids were placed on landing at certain distance. According to the principle of using technology for the disabled platform lift for the disabled are considered as the most appropriate solution. As a consequence, in Rumeli Hisari, which nested in the urban context, emphasized the spatial integrity, was useful and reliable series of steps have been created.

2 ERASMUS IP WORKSHOP, RETHINKING THE URBAN WATERFRONTS HAFENCITY UNIVERSITY - HAMBURG, 2010 The main idea of our urban design is to interpret the canal Reiherstieg not as another barrier, but as chance of connection. Since the Reiherstieg leads from the Norderelbe, close to the Landungsbrücken, to the Süderelbe close to the Harburger Binnenhafen, where future developments will take place, it is a natural connection between Hamburg city centre and the district centre of Harburg. Meanwhile this connection with a ferry can be an important part of the greater project “leap over the river Elbe” it has to deal with the neighborhood of Wilhelmsburg. The great advantage of the ferry will be its mobility not just north to south, but also east to west – the zipping of Wilhelmsburg and the port areas. So the ferry could work as a kind of a usual “bus” like some ferries are already today in Hamburg. So we propose three stops on both sides of the Reiherstieg to connect the mixed used (mostly residential) area Reiherstiegviertel and the mostly working area of the port. Another advantage of the ferry is to reserve options of development. For example there could be several more stops in the future, when there are more developments around the site and all this improvement can work just step by step. Because the residential area and the port area don’t really fit together, we consider an office zone as a buffer between the harbor and the Reiherstiegviertel. Even this will improve the ferry line, because of several people who takes the ferry for work. We consider that whenever there will be a new stop of the ferry there will be more improvement around the ferry stop but also on the other side of the canal. We thought about places to have a view across the Reiherstieg and to north or south.
