Country Day
Celebrates 60 Years
Country Day’s 60th Anniversary brought stories, films, and joyful reunions

From the Head of School
Reflecting on our 60th year, Country Day continues to remarkably evolve to meet the needs of current students and anticipate what the future will hold. A concept that began at a kitchen table in 1964 is now a vibrant institution, celebrating its first year at full capacity with 598 students and 45 graduating seniors. Members of the Class of 2025 are attending Yale, Dartmouth, Stanford, Brown, Howard, Otis College of Art & Design, and EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University, among many other colleges aligned with their strengths and aspirations.
This year, we celebrated our 60th anniversary through multiple community events, including a Founders Day Picnic, Diamond Anniversary Gala, campus birthday parties, and a reunion weekend. These
SPECIAL THANKS

moments honored the legacy of Country Day founders and deepened the sense of connection that continues to shape our school today.
Whether through volunteering, fundraising, or inspiring others to give, you have strengthened Country Day in immeasurable ways. I am grateful to Board President Julie Sloat and the Board of Trustees for their dedication to our ongoing success and for their support, including in hosting our first annual State of the School event. Also, our exceptional faculty and staff remain our greatest strength; their commitment to our students’ success is unmatched. Because of you, our institution is stronger.

Richard Mancina ‘73 and former faculty member Dave Hechler, spent hours creating a film honoring the school's history, while collaborating with the Advancement office to build our reunion weekend that brought together alumni, past trustees, former faculty, and friends.
Auction Chairs Chelsey Reeves and Kelley Brown, worked tirelessly to raise impressive funds while providing a beautiful evening of community at the Diamond Masquerade Gala.
Country Day Fund celebrated an 80% parent participation rate, a tremendous testament to the spirit of our community.
Our Parents’ Association, Families of Color group, Grands & Friends Association, and the many other dedicated volunteers continued to make our school outstanding day in and day out.
As you read through this report, I hope you take pride in all that we’ve achieved together and are inspired by what we can accomplish together in the future. Nothing is possible at Country Day without the unwavering support of you, our stakeholders.
Thank you for your continued support,

Lee Thomsen Head of School

Dear Country Day Donors, Volunteers, and Champions,
The Annual Report is our opportunity to celebrate the generosity of our donors and volunteers. Your giving touches every corner of campus life, enhancing learning, creativity, and connection. I’m delighted to share that together our community raised over $1 million, directly enriching the student experience in the 2024 - 25 school year. Thank you!
This year, giving to the Country Day Fund brought programming and support to our students surrounding digital wellness and helped students build a healthier relationship with social media and technology. We were also able to enhance the reading curriculum in Kindergarten, renovate our baseball field, and support our Middle School faculty to attend a world language conference.
Gifts to the Country Day Fund enabled us to add a new administrative position, our Director of Equity and Belonging, to ensure that all students at Country Day feel empowered to learn in an environment where they feel safe, known, seen, and heard. We also take pride in offering $3.5 million in tuition assistance, helping families access the transformative experience of a Country Day education.
While the Country Day Fund is the largest fundraiser of the school year, it certainly isn’t the only one. Together, our community raised $165,000 for the Scholars Program this year, with a significant portion coming from the 60th Anniversary Gala. Additionally, donors supported the 60th Anniversary Film Project, faculty salaries, student awards, our libraries, and much more.
It is because of you that we’re able to deliver on our mission in offering an inclusive, forward-thinking education rooted in academic excellence. Your gifts ensure that students learn in small, dynamic classrooms guided by dedicated faculty who know and inspire them.
With gratitude,

Rachelle Doyle Director of Advancement

Modern Playwrights: Stories from the Stage
A student and teacher bring original theater to life at Country Day
Original plays are taking center stage at Country Day, thanks to the creative talents of High School student Hayley Clark ‘26 and drama teacher Jane McGinnes.
After receiving the 8th Grade Drama Award, Hayley Clark was encouraged by Ms. McGinnes to write her own play. The result: Armageddon, a gripping original production inspired by Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, and survival dramas. With support from fellow students and faculty, the student playwright brought her vision to life on stage this year—gaining valuable experience in collaboration, revision, and storytelling. “It was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done,” she shared, “but I learned so much. The support from the cast and teachers meant everything.” The experience not only strengthened her writing but has opened doors— Ms. McGinnes is already encouraging another original production for Hayley’s senior year and connecting her with publishing contacts.
Ms. McGinnes is also making waves. Her original play Influence(rs), written for the Middle School winter production, has just been accepted for publication by Eldridge Plays and Musicals. With her background in professional acting and a master’s in scriptwriting, McGinnes crafted a story that resonated with both students and audiences—balancing humor, depth, and a cannon (literally). Originally trained as a professional actor in the UK and a veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, McGinnes has long brought both artistic skill and deep empathy to the classroom. “I wanted to create a play that had depth and humor—and gave every student a role with purpose,” she explained. With input from her students during rehearsals, Influence(rs) became a true collaboration and a lasting contribution to youth theatre.

“Working with Hayley on her play, so soon after I’d completed my own was so rewarding. She was coming into the process having written a lot of fiction, and my goal was to encourage her to push the theatricality of her script. We also had practical considerations—like she had to add extra characters because our class grew in size— and the script had to be shortened by 20 pages because of time constraints. She demonstrated a great deal of maturity through the whole process—even though I know it was hard for her to cut scenes and lines that she loved. The cast also has to be commended for their passion and engagement—they were on board from the very first table read, and many enjoyed giving their input and seeing their ideas incorporated in the next draft.”
Together, teachers and students are reshaping what it means to be a storyteller at Country Day—proving that creativity, mentorship, and bold ideas can lead to powerful outcomes both on and off the stage.

Country Day Robotics:
Powered by Curiosity and Collaboration
Country Day hosted a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) “League Meet” for the NorCal North-East FTC League this year, welcoming 11 teams from the greater Sacramento region and Bay Area for a day of collaborative problem-solving, competition, and innovation. The league hosts three meets before a final season League Tournament. Cumulative performance during the meets determines the placement seeds for the League Tournament, and then winners of the Tournament advance to a regional NorCal Championships Tournament.
Country Day’s own team, Hoot and Compute, competed with skill and creativity in this year’s Submerged challenge. Students designed, built, and programmed robots to retrieve plastic samples from inside a metal structure called the Submersible. Samples were scored by dunking them into a high basket, or by clipping them to colored rungs on the structure. Teams had six play opportunities in which four robots maneuvered live in a 12-foot square arena.
It was an intense day for Hoot and Compute! The team’s robot, “Steve,” experienced mechanical failure with its intake arm in the second round, leaving it dangling limp while the drivers frantically tried to push samples using the robot’s body. Rapid dissasembly and reassembly between matches allowed the team to swap out a blown servo motor, and they redesigned the gear system on the “elbow” in five-minute bursts during the next few breaks. Our students were especially proud of their performance in the final round, when the robot’s new-and-improved arm perfectly executed three high dunks to close out the meet. Hoot and Compute finished the day in 5th place out of 11, and held that position throughout the remainder of the season.
Led by our hands-on, iterative approach to STEM, FTC Robotics is offered as a full-year High School elective, blending coding, building, design thinking, and teamwork into one dynamic learning experience. This new program, going into its third year, extends the competitive robotics opportunities for students who previously participated in FIRST LEGO League as a Techno Cav or Baxter’s Builder.
Students from this year’s High School team also taught a robotics course during the summer. Hoot and Compute leadership approached Breakthrough Sacramento director Faith Galati with their proposal, and ultimately collaborated to create a month-long elective course using LEGO robotics.

Country Day Celebrates 60 Years!
In September 1964, the first day of school at Sacramento Country Day found twelve students, two full-time and several part-time teachers, and one school secretary in a rented trailer in the parking lot of the Unitarian Church on Sierra Boulevard, just a few blocks from the present campus. Sixty years later, our 598 students, 110 staff and faculty, and hundreds of family members celebrated this incredible milestone throughout the 2024-25 school year.
You can read stories from the past 60 years in the school’s history book, published in 2015, and the newly-released chronicle of the last 10 years that examines our more recent history, including the school's response to COVID, updates on the Mock Trial team and lunch program, a conversation with Head of School Lee Thomsen, and more.

Ten-Year Chronicle, 2015-2025

This We Remember: Sacramento Country Day School 50-year history book
Honoring our History
In celebration of Country Day and our 60th Anniversary, alumni, alumni parents, friends, and former employees returned to Latham Drive June 6-8, for three days of festivities. The weekend included an off-campus happy hour hosted by alumni parents Julie and Jamie Nelson, the screening of a documentary film about the school’s early years, and a “Cavalater” picnic to close out our 60th year.
“A lot of the values in the film are what we’re still proud to talk about today. The smaller classes, incredible teachers, and the millions and millions of opportunities resemble the Country Day experience I had.”
- Sanjana Anand ’22
On June 7, Dave Hechler and Richard Mancina released “How We Built a Rigorous, Seriously Quirky High School That Rocks,” a film to capture the process of building a high school and a look at the lasting impact of the school’s foundational years. The film was followed by a panel conversation about the legacy of a Country Day education. A second film was created using footage from that day, and both films are available for online viewing.
We thank everyone who participated in bringing history to life for all to celebrate and learn from.

In Profile: Wendy Ross
Wendy Ross joined Country Day in 1988, serving as the School’s Director of Development until her retirement in 2015. Wendy built the school’s coordinated fundraising program from scratch, establishing an annual giving campaign and leading the efforts for capital fundraising that resulted in the construction of our Lower School building, Middle School Center, and Frank Science Center, as well as the renovation of the Matthews Library and High School classrooms.
While fundraising was her main directive, Wendy’s contributions to County Day include her unmatched ability to “friend-raise” and “funraise.” Spearheading countless events from the annual auction to faculty parties to the School’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, Wendy allowed us to celebrate together. For many parents and students, Wendy’s office was a welcoming space and the connections she forged in our community are still felt today. For her longtime financial contributions and her unwavering support of the individual members of our community, we honor Wendy Ross for being Country Day Loyal.

During her time at Country Day, Wendy Ross was instrumental in the planning and execution of two milestone school events. She was often the one behind the camera, but occasionally friends and colleagues could coax Wendy into a photo.
In the top picture, taken in 1989, Wendy is surrounded by other members of the staff and administration, all wearing their 25th Anniversary t-shirts. In the bottom photo, taken at the 50th Anniversary Solid Gold Gala, Wendy poses with a group of alumni and alumni parents.

Teaching with Purpose Leading with Heart 2025 Faculty Awards
In recognition of faculty who have gone above and beyond in demonstrating a commitment to Country Day’s mission and core values, we proudly honor a faculty member in each division annually. The recognition includes an honorarium of $1,500 for each awardee. These awards celebrate the remarkable contributions of teachers who, through their unwavering guidance, prepare students to lead in an increasingly interconnected, diverse world and to solve the ever more complex problems facing society in a time when humanity and benevolence are a priority.
Barbara Ore Lower School Faculty Award
Stephanie Castillo
The Lower School Faculty Award is named for longtime Country Day educator Barbara Ore, in recognition and in honor of her 30-year career at Country Day, much of it spent as the Head of the Lower School.
The 2025 award recognizes Stephanie Castillo who, like former teacher Barbara Ore, demonstrates outstanding commitment, creativity, and impact on young learners. She embodies the spirit and the magic of our community with her deep love of children, and a commitment to guiding them to become who they are meant to be. Colleagues admire the way Stephanie talks about her students, and the hundreds of small, purposeful things that she does for each of them every single day.
Daniel R. Kopf Middle School Faculty Award
Laura Steele Monahan & Ed Bolman

The Middle School award, funded by the Kopf family, is named for Daniel Kopf, who passed away in January of 2022. By endowing this award, the Kopf family hopes to continue Dan’s committed legacy of philanthropy to Country Day and shining a light on the unwavering passion of our dedicated, inspiring, and talented faculty.
Laura Steele Monahan worked at Country Day for thirty years. She started as a substitute, then director of the program now known as Breakthrough Sacramento. She spent six years teaching fifth grade math, science, and history, then joined the Middle School faculty twenty years ago. A true lifelong learner, Laura is forever honing her teaching techniques and looking for ways to inspire students to

appreciate the beauty of mathematics. She is a no-nonsense advisor, an integral member of the seventh grade team, and occasionally a flute player in the band. Coutnry Day wishes her the best on her retirement and bueño suerte on her move to Spain.
In Ed Bolman’s twenty years at Country Day, he has taught math and history with indescribable volume, fast-talking, and flair, bringing energy to everything from bridge building to the Greek Olympics to end-of-year raffles. At one time or another, he has chaired both the math and history departments, led the student council, and served as a fear-inspiring yet developmentallyappropriate Dean of Students. Country Day honors with appreciation and respect for his faithful service to our school.
Each year, Country Day recognizes one High School faculty member whose tireless dedication to our mission goes well beyond each individual class and soars above our campus. English Teacher, Jane Bauman, is recognized for her meticulous feedback as a master teacher of writing, focused carefully on syntax, grammar, and deep meaning. Absorbing ideas from student writing and recent publications, Ms. Bauman makes her classroom, our students, and our school constantly evolve and grow. From deep reflection on what it means to belong, to countless recommendation letters, to thoughtful questions regarding the status quo or new ideas, Ms. Bauman always lends her ideas and her efforts to our school.

Francie Tidey Award

Congratulations to Brooke Wells, this year’s Francie Tidey Award recipient. Mr. Wells has been at Country Day since 2003, teaching English and History, as well as serving as Head of the High School since 2014.
Jordan Younger and Katie Estep, members of the class of 2009, introduced Mr. Wells at the award presentation in September. Jordan Younger shared, “He really took the time to get to know us. When he saw me wearing a U2 band shirt in 8th grade, he offered to teach me to play the guitar.”
Together, they spoke about how Mr. Wells encourages his students to pursue their individual interests and challenges them to think critically, something supported by the testimonials submitted on behalf of Mr. Wells. “I believe Brooke Wells was a big part of the foundation of my education. He challenged me and made me a better writer as well as a critical thinker.” His creative approach to learning, which can include a guitar and dancing to Beowolf lines, inspires Country Day students in the classroom and in life. “Even back then, you were teaching me the value of being present,” said Jordan. “Without your guidance and care, I would truly not be the person that I am today. For that reason, I hope my kids will have a teacher just like you.”
The Francie Tidey Award for Excellence in Education, established in 2001, is an alumni-sponsored faculty award named to honor longtime College Counselor and English teacher Francie Tidey. The annual award recognizes a member of the faculty or administration who has made an outstanding contribution to the Country Day community during their tenure. This year’s winner was honored at a virtual award presentation in September and recognized at the High School graduation in the spring.
“Anything we wanted to do, he made us believe it was possible.”

Alumni Core Values Award
Established in the 2024-25 school year, the Core Values Award honors an alum of Country Day whose personal or professional endeavors embody the spirit of one or more of Country Day’s core values. The recipient of the award has demonstrated excellence in the pursuit or advocacy of intellectual discovery, creativity, diversity, critical thinking, and/or compassion. Nominations may be submitted year-round. A recipient is chosen each spring.
In this inaugural year of the Core Values Award, we recognize Amy Johnson, a member of the class of 1995, who passed away in August 2024, following a brave battle with cancer. Amy fully embodied the core values of Sacramento Country Day School through a life marked by a dedication to intellectual curiosity, compassion, creativity, and thoughtful leadership.
Amy Johnson’s dedication to Sacramento Country Day’s core values was highly visible in the way she engaged with her community. Ever-proud of her time spent at Country Day and all she received from it, Amy gave generously of her time and energy, working for a period as the school’s alumni director and yearbook adviser, and volunteering as the 50th Anniversary Reunion co-chair and as a member of the Board of Trustees. She believed in building strong communities and worked to ensure others felt seen, supported, and inspired.

In her professional life, Amy demonstrated Country Day’s core values daily. As co-founder and later CEO of Skyline Scaffold, she led with critical thinking, objectivity, and compassion in an industry where few women held leadership roles.
Amy’s legacy lies in her character — her tireless self-reflection, objective thinking, and unwavering generosity. She sought to understand before acting and uplifted everyone around her. Honoring Amy with this award recognizes a life lived with clarity, courage, and heart.

Alumni Mixers

Who’s in the inflatable squirrel costume? That’s our San Francisco mixer host Chris Dale ’93. He and wife Sarah opened their house in October for a Halloween-themed alumni mixer. Costumes were optional.

Director of Advancement Rachelle Doyle hosted Los Angeles area alumni at a mixer in September. Pictured left to right: Mollie Berg ’12, Camille Getz ’12, Edek Sher ’09, Zola Grey ’22, Jianna Gudebski ’13, Liam Kashner ’24, Rachelle Doyle.
Alumni Visits

Brian Spencer ‘83

The Country Day Advancement Office attended a National Association of Independent Schools conference in Washington, D.C., in January and invited local alumni to join them for a happy hour. Pictured left to right: Joanna Derman ’08, Lenora Yerkes ’99, Taryn Tyler Williams ’98, Beth Nelson ’98, Leah Rose Parker ’98, and Associate Director of Advancement Amy Nelson Wells ’98.
Class of ‘83 alum Brian Spencer, an acclaimed film documentarian, presented on filmmaking and social justice to our High School students in February. In addition to sharing insights from his work, Brian brought two remarkable guests: John Burris, the legendary civil rights attorney known for representing Rodney King, Tupac Shakur, and Oscar Grant, and Judge Emily Vasquez, the first Latina judge in Sacramento County history.
Colin Hanks ‘96 and E.A. Hanks ‘01
Colin Hanks ’96 is credited with introducing the shoe toss to Country Day pep rallies while acting as a student emcee in High School. During a visit to Sacramento this year, Colin and E.A. Hanks ’01 both stopped by campus, where Colin recreated his pep rally role by leading current students in an ear-splitting shoe toss. E.A. wasn’t screaming in the gym when she shared news of her book “The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road,” which was published in April. Director of Advancement Rachelle Doyle had the opportunity to catch up with E.A. again, when she attended an April book reading at Time Tested Books in Sacramento.

Taryn Mackenzie Williams ’98

Taryn Mackenzie Williams ’98 visited campus in March and met with High School students over lunch to share her expertise on careers in public service and civil rights. Taryn is the former Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy at the US Department of Labor, a position she held during the Biden administration. In this role, she advised the Secretary of Labor on how the Department’s policies and programs impacted the employment of people with disabilities and led the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP).
Alumni Profiles
Liam Kaschner ‘24
Occupation: College Student
College: Cal Poly Pomona, Manufacturing Engineering
At Country Day I Learned: That learning is more than just homework and textbooks. I learned how to lead clubs and sports, integrate around curves, create friendships with classmates and teachers, and prepare myself for future journeys with an inquisitive mindset.
Liam Kaschner is one of the newest members of our alumni community. He graduated less than two months ago with the class of 2024. An active member of our student philanthropy group while he was in high school, Liam has played an important role in advocating for the power of philanthropy at Country Day. In fact, he’s working this summer as an intern in the Advancement Office, helping plan our fall Country Day Fund communications, collecting information for a project highlighting our alumni, and spending some time in the glamorous world of paperwork and filing. Liam heads to Cal Poly Pomona at the end of the summer, where he’ll study engineering.

One Memory I Have From Country Day: Solar Regatta is one of my core memories from Country Day. I helped all across the engineering spectrum throughout the year. The pivotal moment was race day. We blew the competition out of the water with two second place medals and a third place metal in the races.
At Country Day I Learned: That learning is more than just homework and textbooks. I learned how to lead clubs and sports, integrate around curves, create friendships with classmates and teachers, and prepare myself for future journeys with an inquisitive mindset.
Sarah Mancina ‘11
Occupation: Postdoctoral Researcher
City I Call Home: Padova, Italy
College: University of Chicago, BA in Physics; University of Wisconsin, Madison, PhD in Physics
Country Day alumni are ready to reach for the stars. Or, in the case of Sarah Mancina, the neutrinos. Sarah is a postdoc at the Università degli Studi di Padova, where she works on IceCube, a project designed to observe the cosmos from deep within the South Pole ice using nearly massless subatomic particles called neutrinos.
Sarah became involved with IceCube while in graduate school in Madison. But it wasn’t all multimessenger astrophysics. She played on and coached the school’s ultimate frisbee team and found time for some Dungeons and Dragons.
There are 14 countries involved in the IceCube project, and Sarah shares that her favorite part of her job (besides the physics!) is working with an international collaboration of scientists and attending conferences. While in Italy, Sarah has spent time traveling around Europe and learning Italian. The latter prepared her to teach an introductory physics laboratory in Italian, something that was “difficult but rewarding.”

One Memory I Have From Country Day: The day when we decided in world history class to dress up as gnomes for some reason.
At Country Day I Learned: How to write well among many other things.
Zola Grey ‘22
Occupation: Medical Student at UC San Diego School of Medicine
City I Call Home: San Diego, CA
College: UC Berkeley, Molecular and Cell Neurobiology with a minor in Public Policy
Zola Grey is a great example of one of our County Day student athletes as she juggles classwork with a demanding training schedule on the Division 1 Track and Field team at Cal State Northridge. During most of her 11 years at Country Day, Zola trained as a competitive gymnast, before an injury forced her to give up the sport. Her senior year, Zola focused on track and field, something she had participated in recreationally before, and was introduced to the long jump by Coach Fullum. Zola earned a walk-on spot her first year at CSUN. Today, four years after Coach Fullum taught her the basics of the long jump, Zola has earned an athletic scholarship, holds school records, and has been named captain of the team.
Says Zola, “the values of resilience, integrity, and perseverance that were instilled in me at Country Day continue to shape my path—both on and off the field.” Perseverance is necessary as Zola attempts to achieve her goal of qualifying for Regionals and competing at Nationals while handling all the classwork and financial pressures that come with college enrollment. Right now, she’s using her business marketing skills to look for sponsorships allowed under the NCAA’s policy on name, image, and likeness or NIL, and gearing up for a return to campus this fall.
One Memory I Have From Country Day: Going to senior night with my classmates.
At Country Day I Learned: How to be patient.
Serajh Esmail ’16
Occupation: Medical Student at UC San Diego School of Medicine
City I Call Home: San Diego, CA

College: UC Berkeley, Molecular and Cell Neurobiology with a minor in Public Policy
Serajh Esmail’s new podcast “Brains & Bones” shares untold stories in medicine. Says Serajh, for many people “the medical system remains a mystery.” Whether it be the application process or knowledge of pioneers in medicine, he and his co-host use storytelling to bridge the gap in the representation of diverse narratives in the medical field. Serajh is well-suited to track down and tell these stories. A third-year medical student at UC San Diego who is preparing to take a research year focused on neurosurgery and trauma, Serajh has long volunteered as a mentor for youth, focusing on the relationship between the medical system and communities of color. Outside of his studies, academic research, and time spent volunteering, Serajh is enjoying a new hobby of scuba diving and says he is “gearing up to become a father…to a golden retriever.”
One Memory I Have From Country Day: One memory I have from Country Day is when Dr. Whited and Ms. Jacobsen roasted me and my best friend Jag during our graduation. It was the perfect mix of brutal and hilarious—definitely something we all looked forward to as we prepared for the big day.

At Country Day I Learned: The value of curiosity, community, and lifelong learning. It was a place where I could ask questions, explore my passions, grow into the person I am today, and make lifelong friends.
In Memorium
Frank & Brenda Sue Pignata
Former Country Day teachers Frank and Brenda Sue Pignata were key figures in the early history of the school. Devoted partners, Frank and Brenda Sue passed away within months of each other this past year. Over his 21-year tenure as a teacher and administrator (1965-1986), Mr. Pignata had a hand in all facets of school life, including as a math, science, and computer teacher as well as assistant head of school. The Francie Tidey Award recipient in 2004, Mr. Pignata’s influence on his students was profound, and many alumni cite him as their most-remembered teacher. Brenda Sue worked at Country Day from 1982-88, creating a math and science resource center for Lower School students before opening her own tutoring business. Known as “Mrs. P, lover of math,” Brenda Sue fostered an impressive enthusiasm for math in both her students and fellow teachers.

David Farley ’87
“Beep boop beep - Until we meet again in a galaxy far, far away.” So ends the obituary of David Farley ’87, who passed away on August 14, 2025. David was an avid fan of R2D2, the astromech droid from Star Wars, and his obituary highlighted that fact, as well as his love of San Francisco Giants baseball. David played baseball and soccer at Country Day, was an Octagon photographer, and was voted class clown his senior year. David’s obituary notes that one season the Country Day baseball team “set a record for wins that can be tied but never broken.” (Editor’s note: School records for game results are incomplete, but we suspect that statistic does not refer to an undefeated season, but perhaps the opposite.)

Nick Fesler ’13

Clark Branscum ’99
Clark Branscum ’99 passed away suddenly in December. His obituary, published in the Appeal Democrat, shares that he was “on his way to do what he loved most: hunting ducks with his beloved dog, Willow.” Clark attended Country Day through eighth grade, ultimately graduating from Jesuit High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder. After many years in the restaurant industry in San Francisco and Sacramento, Clark found his true calling in farming and took over the family ranch in Marysville, growing rice and olives. He is survived by his wife, Katie, and daughters, Lily and Daisy.
Nick Fesler ’13 passed away in February. At his memorial in Sacramento, friends, former teachers, and family shared memories that highlighted Nick’s great sense of humor, adventurous spirit, and kind soul. Often described as the life of the party, Nick also loved quiet moments to read, and memorial attendees were invited to take home a book from his collection, including a number from his high school English classes at Country Day.
