We are thrilled that you have joined us, and I want to take a moment to thank you for your support. We are here because of YOU, and this point in our history is a direct reflection of how our community has consistently embraced us for the last 50 years.

In addition to the world-class performances, like the one you are here to experience, our golden anniversary has allowed us to formalize an official NFB alumni group. The group is open to former company members, graduates of the NFB AcadĂŠmie and Pre-Professional Program as well as those who performed in our season productions over the years. If you are among our talented alumni, "welcome home."

Our productions this season are also benefitting such an auspicious milestone in NFB's history. It begins with Beer & Ballet at Grayton Beer Company, a mixed repertory performance entitled in a more casual atmosphere. We return to the Mattie Kelly Arts Center November 22-24 for our 40th annual production of The Nutcracker with live music by the Northwest Florida Ballet Symphony Orchestra, led by NFB Music Director David Ott. The orchestra will also provide live music for Cinderella when we come back to the Mattie Kelly Center on February 28 and March 1. We will also host our much anticipated 50th Anniversary Gala on February 29. Our season concludes with Ballet at Twilight, a free, outdoor performance of both classic and modern works, at Grand Boulevard in June.

Inspiring 50 Years

Founded in 1969 by dance pioneer Bernadette Clements, Northwest Florida Ballet was originally called the Fort Walton Beach Ballet. The name was changed to the Northwest Florida Ballet in 1987 to better reflect its geographic service area. The organization’s mission is to provide premiere professional performances, provide an enhanced arts curriculum within the framework of a public school education, identify and develop dancers through exceptional training, and increase community engagement via outreach.

In 1995, former NFB student Todd Eric Allen returned to the area with his wife, Shari Allen, after a distinguished career with Boston Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens to accept the position of Director of the Company. The Allen’s talent, leadership skills, and extensive performance experience have contributed greatly to the continued growth and success of the Company.

In August 2002, the Northwest Florida Ballet and Sybil Smith Lebherz Center for Dance Education opened its doors in downtown Fort Walton Beach after a three-year fund raising campaign and a thirty-three year history of service to the residents of Northwest Florida.

NFB offers world-class performances and training to the community, and reaches thousands of school children through public programs and student performances. In 2002 NFB opened its unique arts education program, the NFB Académie, offering superior academic education and ballet training to young students in grades 3-8 free of charge. For students grades 9-12 NFB created its Pre-Professional Program, an intensive course of study for young men and women who wish to pursue careers as professional dancers.

2019-2020 ARTISTIC STAFF & PRINCIPAL ARTISTS Todd Eric Allen, Artistic Director/CEO

Todd Eric Allen is the Artistic Director/CEO of the Northwest Florida Ballet. He grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and began his training in classical ballet at the age of 14 with Bernadette Clements. One year later he received a scholarship to attend the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, where he studied for five consecutive years; he attended Virginia Intermont College as a scholarship student and was awarded a Dance Magazine Scholarship in 1985 to the Choreographer’s Conference in Geneva, New York.

Mr. Allen has danced with the Louisville Ballet, Boston Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and has performed as a guest artist and teacher throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. He has also had the honor of performing at the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., on two separate occasions, for Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton. Allen has an extensive background in the classics and Balanchine ballets, and has performed featured roles in ballets by Elisa Monte, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, Nacho Duato, James Kudelka, Hans Van Manen and Lucinda Hughey. In May of 2000 Mr. Allen was one of fourteen dancers asked to perform in Ocean Dance 2000 featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov and the White Oak Dance Project. In 2004 he was invited to perform with the Broadway cast in the Tony Award winning Musical, Movin’ Out, choreographed and directed

by Twyla Tharp, music by Billy Joel.

He has choreographed 30 original works and classical ballets and 8 operas, has taught at The USA International Ballet Competition and many master classes and workshops in the US and internationally and has served on the jury of NBA Ballet’s Japanese National Ballet Competition in Tokyo, Japan.

In the summer of 1995 Todd returned to his hometown of Fort Walton Beach, Florida as Artistic Director/CEO of the Northwest Florida Ballet. Over the past 20 years, he has committed himself to his community by developing young minds and bodies through innovative dance education programs, creating an awareness of dance in Northwest Florida and exposing his audiences to a variety of classical and contemporary works. In 2003 Mr. Allen received the Cox Bravo Champion of the Arts Award in Northwest Florida for his work in establishing the NFB Académie, a free academic and artistic education elementary and middle school. He has also received the Elvie DeMarko Dance Achievement Award from The Arts Council of Northwest Florida and has served on various grant panels in the state of Florida for the Division of Cultural Affairs and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation in Baltimore, Md. His groundbreaking work in arts education was featured in Dance Teacher magazine (Nov, 2004) and in Teacher Magazine, a Department of Education publication (May 2005). The Northwest Florida Ballet is now one of the largest and most respected arts organizations in Northwest Florida and has received national recognition for its innovative programs.

Shari Allen, Assistant Director

Shari Allen, holds BFA in Dance from Radford University and a Professional Educators Certificate by the state of Florida Department of Education, has studied with North Carolina School of the Arts, Richmond Ballet and Boston Ballet School. She has performed with Ballet Theatre of Boston, Boston Dance Co., Impulse Dance Co., Mill Mountain Theatre, Southwest Virginia Ballet and been a touring member of Lightwire Theater.

Ms. Allen taught ballet and jazz for the Harvard-Radcliffe Dance Department, the Jeanette Neill Dance Studio in Boston, the Fort Wayne Ballet, Florida Dance Association and the University of West Florida. She is a certified instructor of Pilates through the PhysicalMind Institute, Kathy Corey Pilates, and the Restorative Exercise Institute. For over 30 years, Shari has found her passion in teaching. When she is not working she loves spending time with her family, taking care of animals and creating art.

Dorothy Daniels Lister, Ballet Mistress

“Miss Dorothy", to all her students, received her early training at the Elvie DeMarko School in Pensacola, continued her studies in New York at the Swoboda School (later the Ballet Russe School). She joined the Ballet Russe and danced with such renowned stars as Alicia Alonso, Maria Tallchief, Nina Novak, Alexandria Danilova, Igor Yousevitch, Frederic Franklin, Leon Danelian and Leonide Massine.

After leaving the Ballet Russe, she danced at Radio City in their ballet, made guest appearances in Civic Ballets and Opera Companies. She later performed in Sumer Stock and on Broadway with such stars as Bernadette Peters, Mickey Rooney, Elaine Stritch, and Joel Grey. Her final Broadway endeavor was in Michael Bennett’s Ballroom.

Miss Dorothy began her teaching career and joined the American Ballet Center, the official school of the Robert Joffrey Ballet Company. For 25 years, she was Head of the Children’s Department. She was responsible for rehearsing 65 children for the New York performances of the Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

Her credits include co-authoring the book “Conversations with Choreographers” in 1996, interviewing all the well-known choreographers on stage and screen. In 1997, she moved back to the Pensacola area and is now the Ballet Mistress for the NFB, dance coach for Tate High School’s Colorguard, and choreographer for Tate High’s musicals. She is very proud of the students and teachers performing and teaching in all mediums of dance from Classical Ballet Companies to Broadway and television. Her motto is “dance for those who try.”

Bernadette Clements Sims, Founder

Bernadette Sims studied with Mary Lou Noletto, Lee Partridge and Duane Dishion. At the age of 18 she auditioned for George Balanchine and placed third in a regional audition for study at the School of American Ballet in New York City. She won a scholarship to study with Alexandra Danilova at the Ballet Arts Studio at Carnegie Hall. She also studied with Robert Joffrey and Richard Englund and performed with the Mobile Ballet, the New Orleans Ballet and the Birmingham Ballet. In 1964 she was 1st runner up to Miss Alabama. After marrying, she moved to Fort Walton Beach and founded the Northwest Florida Ballet in 1969.

David Ott ranks among America’s most-performed composers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His works have been performed or recorded by some of America’s and Europe’s most renowned orchestras, including the Chicago, National, Minnesota, Atlanta and London Symphonies. He has garnered critical praise and received numerous awards for his compositions and continues to be commissioned for works by major orchestras throughout the U.S. He has been cited as “one of the greats of American symphony music composers of the last quarter of the twentieth century.”

Presently Ott is Music Director and Conductor of the Panama City Pops Orchestra, a sixty-five piece ensemble that performs six concerts each season. He also serves as Director of Music Ministries and Organist at Christ the King Episcopal Church in Santa Rosa Beach, where he leads a chamber music concert series.

Lindsey Kelley Brewer, Community School Assistant Director

Lindsey Kelley Brewer began ballet and modern dance training with the Northwest Florida Ballet. In 2007, she graduated cum laude from the University of South Florida with a BFA in Dance Performance. While living in New York City, Lindsey performed the works of Monica Bill Barnes, Sean Curran, Rebecca Davis, Yesid Lopez, Laura Peterson, Becky Radway, Oliver and Teri Steele, and Saul Ulerio. She is a former company member of the Asheville Ballet, Contemporary Ballet Theatre, The Human Institution, Michiyo and Dancers, Naganuma Dance and Steps on Broadway’s Repertory Ensemble. Her work has been presented at the American Dance Festival, Asheville Fringe Festival, Bryant Park Contemporary Dance Festival, Food for Thought/ Danspace Project, Goucher College, North Carolina Dance Festival, Meredith College, Steps on Broadway, Triskelion Arts Festival, and University of North Carolina Asheville. Lindsey is the former artistic director of Lindsey Kelley Dance, a modern dance company based in Asheville, NC.

Katia Carranza, Principal Guest Artist

Katia Carranza graduated from the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza de Monterrey in Mexico in 1996. She then joined Ballet de Monterrey as a soloist. In 1998, she joined Miami City Ballet (MCB) as a corps de ballet dancer, was promoted to soloist in 2001, principal soloist in 2003 and in 2004 she was promoted to principal dancer. She left after the 2007 season to rejoin Ballet de Monterrey as a principal but continued to dance with MCB as a guest artist for an additional six seasons. During her career, Carranza has participated in national and international ballet competitions such as the Concurso Nacional in Guadalajara, Mexico and the Concurso Internacional in Cuba where she won silver medals in both. In 1998, she was a finalist at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, MS, and in 2002 won the bronze medal in the same competition.

Emily Carrico, Principal Guest Artist

Emily Carrico, originally from Lexington, Kentucky, began her training at the Kentucky Ballet Theatre Academy under the direction of Rafaela Cento Muñoz.

At the age of 14, Emily received a scholarship to attend The Harid Conservatory, where she was the recipient of the Dance Study Award during both years of attendance. In 2012, she joined the Kentucky Ballet Theatre under the direction of Norbe Risco, where she performed many soloist and principal roles. After two years, she moved to Florida to study under Magaly Suárez at The Art of Classical Ballet School, where she was guided by her tutelage to dance with Columbia City Ballet for two seasons. She has also competed in the Youth America Grand Prix on several occasions, placing in the top 12 and qualifying for the New York City finals every time. Currently, Emily is a company dancer with Atlanta Ballet.

Jonathan Carter, Principal Guest Artist

Jonathan Carter started his ballet training at the age of 3. At 9, he began attending Northwest Florida Ballet Academie and trained with Northwest Florida Ballet under the direction of Todd Eric Allen. With NFB, Jonathan has performed numerous principal and soloist roles, including The Prince in Cinderella, The Prince in Snow White, The Prince in Firebird, a soloist in Fernando Bujones’ Jazz Swing and Russian in The Nutcracker.

In 2016, Jonathan joined Atlanta Ballet II under the direction of Gennadi Nedvigin where he had the opportunity to work with “world renowned” choreographers such as Helen Picket, Robert Barnet and Yuri Possokhov. He then joined Cincinnati Ballet II in 2017, under the direction of Victoria Morgan, and was featured in Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker and Beauty and The Beast.

In 2018, Jonathan joined Alabama Ballet as a company member where he performed Prince Desire in The Sleeping Beauty and The Cavalier in Balanchine’s Nutcracker. Jonathan Carter is currently dancing as a professional Guest Artist performing for multiple companies across America. As a Guest Artist he has performed principal roles with Northwest Florida Ballet, A&A Ballet, Mobile Ballet, Victoria Ballet Theatre, The Aika Ballet School, Andalusia Ballet and Ballet Indiana.

Eduardo Pi Iglesias, Principal Guest Artist

Born in Habana, Cuba, Mr. Iglesias graduated from Escuela Nacional de Ballet de Cuba in 2005. In 2003, he won the 3rd prize at International Ballet Competition in Habana. After the competition, he joined company PRO DANZA. He was in the company for two years working with Laura Alonso, Fernando Alonso and Frank Andersen. In 2009, he joined Ballet de Monterrey. His roles with the company included the Basilio in Don Quixote, the pas de trois in Swan Lake, Franz in Coppelia, the peasant pas de deux and Hilarion in Gisele, the Flames of Paris pas de deux, the Tchaikovsky pas de deux, the Nutcracker and Sugar Plum Prince in the Nutcracker, Golden Idol in Bayadere, Mercutio in Jorge Amarante’s Romeo and Juliet, 4th movement soloist from Yuri Posokov’s Diving in to the Lilacs, soloist from Bruch Violin Concerto, Six dans by Jiri Kylian, Torero as Carmen Ballet and many soloist roles of neoclassical and contemporary repertoire of the company. In 2012, he became a soloist and eventually promoted to principal in 2014. In 2017, he joined Mobile Ballet Company as a Ballet Master for the entire season. Currently, he is dancing with Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami.

Meisy Laffitte, Principal Guest Artist

Meisy Laffitte was born in Havana, Cuba and graduated from the National School of Arts. While in school, she participated in several International Ballet Workshops and won the two Silver Medals as a soloist and in the pas de deux division at the International Ballet Competition of Cuba for the Junior Division, also winning a Bronze Medal as a soloist years prior.

Meisy performed with DNC Todos Para Danza in Tijuana, Mexico. Ms. Laffitte has performed as a guest artist with Joburg Ballet in South Africa performing Don Quixote as a friend and Cupid. Her repertoire includes soloist roles such as Blue Bird in Sleeping Beauty, Kitri in Don Quixote, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, Flames of Paris Pas de Deux, La Bayadere Pas de Deux and others. Ms. Laffitte came to the United States in April of 2013 joining the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida in Miami after working with Laura Alonso.

Since joining Kentucky Ballet Theater in 2014, Ms. Laffitte has performed soloist roles in La Fille Mal Gardee (pas de deux), Satanella in Carnival of Venice, La Bayadere as Nikiya, The Merchant & the Slave Pas de Deux from Le Corsaire, Harlequinade, The Nutcracker, Paquita, La Sylphide, The Night Before Christmas, Beauty & the Beast, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Raymonda, The Little Humpback Horse, Calles de Tango, Waltz for Two, Divenire, Nisi Dominus, Hoops, Fairy Doll, Little Mermaid, Degas, and Beethoven. In May 2017, Meisy traveled to Cancun, Mexico with three other company members to perform a pas de deux by invitation at the 7th Annual Encounter of Dance Festival.

Sabrina Lobner, Principal Guest Artist

Sabrina Lobner received her training from the Northwest Florida Ballet under the direction of Todd Eric Allen. While there she studied extensively with Dorothy Daniels Lister and performed works by Fernando Bujones, Winthrop Corey, Katia Garza, and Sean Nguyen-Hilton, among others. Upon graduating high school, she was offered a scholarship to the Martha Graham School in New York City and a company position in Martha Graham Dance Company's second company, Graham 2.

Recently, Sabrina was featured in the ensemble of an AEA showcase of On the Town, directed by Richard Stafford and choreographed by Elizabeth Troxler. She continues to work with Elizabeth Troxler and had the pleasure of performing in her show Free to Be in New York City. She is currently a company member of Sheep Meadow Dance Theatre, directed by Billy Blanken.

Sergio Masero-Olarte, Principal Guest Artist

Sergio Masero-Olarte, originally from Madrid, Spain, began his training at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma. Sergio trained on scholarship at San Francisco Ballet School and then joined Ballet Memphis as a Company dancer. At Ballet Memphis, he performed lead roles in Steven McMahon’s Romeo & Juliet and Swan Lake, Matthew Neenan’s The Darting Eyesand Water of the Flowery Mill, and in works by Mark Godden, Gabrielle Lamb, and Yuri Sands. As a principal guest artist, he has danced with Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet and Avant Chamber Ballet in Dallas, Texas.

Raul Peinado, Principal Guest Artist

Raul Peinado was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. There he began his dance training on full scholarship with ballet master Victor Ullate of the Victor Ullate Ballet School, and Cristina Alvarez at Catedra Alicia Alonso. While in Spain, Raul danced as a soloist with Ballet Clasico de Madrid for 3 years where he performed most classical ballet repertoire. He also performed as a guest dancer with the National Ballet of Cuba in Don Quixote and Swan Lake. In 2000, Raul came to the United States and was offered a full scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. He then joined the Joffrey Ballet Ensemble, where he danced for five years. While in New York, he has been a company member of the following dance companies: Rebecca Kelly Ballet, Dances Patrelle, Peridance Ensemble, Configuration Dance, and Faune Dance Troupe. Raul participated in the 2008 Buffalo Dance Festival with partner and renowned ballerina Misty Copeland in a duet choreographed by American Ballet Theatre’s Susan Jaffe. Raul has performed as a guest artist for many regional ballet companies in the U.S.

Courtney Shealy, Principal Guest Artist

Courtney Shealy, from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, trained with Northwest Florida Ballet for nine years. She received scholarships to Summer Intensives at Boston Ballet, Next Generation Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and American Ballet Theatre. In 2014, she received third place at the Youth American Grand Prix semifinal for both senior classical and contemporary.

Courtney joined the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in September 2015, became an apprentice with the main Company in August 2016 and joined the corps de ballet in January 2017.

Cameron McCune, Principal Guest Artist

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Cameron McCune began his ballet training at the age of 8 at the Raleigh School of Ballet under the direction of Mary LeGere.

He joined the school’s pre-professional company, Raleigh Dance Theatre, at age 13, and began studying privately with Gyula Pandi the next year. McCune attended summer programs at the Raleigh School of Ballet, Miami City Ballet, and the School of American Ballet, and won a silver medal at the Youth American Grand Prix in 2012. McCune joined ABT as an apprentice in 2013 and the corps de ballet in January 2014. His repertoire includes Village Notary in La Fille mal gardée, the Young Soldier in The Green Table, Spanish Dance in The Nutcracker, a Fairy Cavalier in Ratmansky’s The Sleeping Beauty, leading roles in Symphonic Variations and Thirteen Diversions, and featured roles in The Brahms-Haydn Variations and Songs of Bukovina.
