As you will experience in the production you are here to enjoy, our 2018-2019 season was carefully curated to carry on this tradition and set us on the cusp of a major milestone next year – our 50th anniversary.

Through our continued partnership with Grand Boulevard, our season opens with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This delightfully magical production is brought to the community as part of Grand Boulevard’s Coastal Culture series. In November, we bring our 39th annual production of The Nutcracker back to the Mattie Kelly Arts Center featuring live music by the Northwest Florida Ballet Symphony Orchestra, led by NFB Music Director David Ott. December marks the return of Lightwire Theater’s A Very Electric Christmas for two performances at the Destin United Methodist Church Life Center.

Our season concludes with New Moves, a unique studio series experience performed in a specially designed black box theater at the NFB’s downtown studios in March. This eclectic event includes the premiere of new cutting edge works by guest choreographers as well as pieces from the NFB repertoire in addition to an art exhibit featuring local visual artists.

Founded in 1969 by dance pioneer Bernadette Clements, Northwest Florida Ballet was originally called the Fort Walton Beach Ballet. The name was changed to the Northwest Florida Ballet in 1987 to better reflect its geographic service area. The organization’s mission is to provide quality dance performances and instruction for Northwest Florida; identify and develop talented dancers; and increase appreciation of the arts through public education and outreach.

In 1995, former NFB student Todd Eric Allen returned to the area after a distinguished career with Boston Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens to accept the position of Director of the Company.

Mr. Allen’s talent, his leadership skills, and his extensive performance experience have contributed greatly to the continued growth and success of the Company.

In August 2002, the Northwest Florida Ballet and Sybil Smith Lebherz Center for Dance Education opened its doors in downtown Fort Walton Beach after a three-year fund raising campaign and a thirty-three year history of service to the residents of Northwest Florida.

NFB offers world-class performances and training to the community, and reaches thousands of school children through public programs and student performances. In 2002 NFB opened its unique arts education program, the NFB Académie, offering superior academic education and ballet training to young students in grades 3-8 free of charge. For students grades 9-12 NFB created its Pre-Professional Program, an intensive course of study for young men and women who wish to pursue careers as professional dancers.

NORTHWEST FLORIDA BALLET ARTISTIC STAFF Todd Eric Allen, Artistic Director/CEO

Todd Eric Allen is the Artistic Director/CEO of the Northwest Florida Ballet. He grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and began his training in classical ballet at the age of 14 with Bernadette Clements. One year later he received a scholarship to attend the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, where he studied for five consecutive years; he attended Virginia Intermont College as a scholarship student and was awarded a Dance Magazine Scholarship in 1985 to the Choreographer’s Conference in Geneva, New York.

Mr. Allen has danced with the Louisville Ballet, Boston Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and has performed as a guest artist and teacher throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. He has also had the honor of performing at the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., on two separate occasions, for Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton. Allen has an extensive background in the classics and Balanchine ballets, and has performed featured roles in ballets by Elisa Monte, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, Nacho Duato, James Kudelka, Hans Van Manen and Lucinda Hughey. In May of 2000 Mr. Allen was one of fourteen dancers asked to perform in Ocean Dance 2000 featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov and the White Oak Dance Project. In 2004 he was invited to perform with the Broadway cast in the Tony Award winning Musical, Movin’ Out, choreographed and directed

by Twyla Tharp, music by Billy Joel.

He has choreographed 30 original works and classical ballets and 8 operas, has taught at The USA International Ballet Competition and many master classes and workshops in the US and internationally and has served on the jury of NBA Ballet’s Japanese National Ballet Competition in Tokyo, Japan.

In the summer of 1995 Todd returned to his hometown of Fort Walton Beach, Florida as Artistic Director/CEO of the Northwest Florida Ballet. Over the past 20 years, he has committed himself to his community by developing young minds and bodies through innovative dance education programs, creating an awareness of dance in Northwest Florida and exposing his audiences to a variety of classical and contemporary works. In 2003 Mr. Allen received the Cox Bravo Champion of the Arts Award in Northwest Florida for his work in establishing the NFB Académie, a free academic and artistic education elementary and middle school. He has also received the Elvie DeMarko Dance Achievement Award from The Arts Council of Northwest Florida and has served on various grant panels in the state of Florida for the Division of Cultural Affairs and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation in Baltimore, Md. His groundbreaking work in arts education was featured in Dance Teacher magazine (Nov, 2004) and in Teacher Magazine, a Department of Education publication (May 2005). The Northwest Florida Ballet is now one of the largest and most respected arts organizations in Northwest Florida and has received national recognition for its innovative programs.

Sharon Allen, Community School Director

Sharon Allen, holds BFA in Dance from Radford University and a Professional Educators Certificate by the state of Florida Department of Education, has studied with North Carolina School of the Arts, Richmond Ballet and Boston Ballet School. She has performed with Ballet Theatre of Boston, Boston Dance Co., Impulse Dance Co., Mill Mountain Theatre, Southwest Virginia Ballet and been a touring member of Lightwire Theater.

Ms. Allen taught ballet and jazz for the Harvard-Radcliffe Dance Department, the Jeanette Neill Dance Studio in Boston, the Fort Wayne Ballet, Florida Dance Association and the University of West Florida. She is a certified instructor of Pilates through the PhysicalMind Institute, Kathy Corey Pilates, and the Restorative Exercise Institute. For over 30 years, Sharon has found her passion in teaching. When she is not working she loves spending time with her family, taking care of animals and creating art.

Dorothy Daniels Lister, Ballet Mistress

“Miss Dorothy", to all her students, received her early training at the Elvie DeMarko School in Pensacola, continued her studies in New York at the Swoboda School (later the Ballet Russe School). She joined the Ballet Russe and danced with such renowned stars as Alicia Alonso, Maria Tallchief, Nina Novak, Alexandria Danilova, Igor Yousevitch, Frederic Franklin, Leon Danelian and Leonide Massine.

After leaving the Ballet Russe, she danced at Radio City in their ballet, made guest appearances in Civic Ballets and Opera Companies. She later performed in Sumer Stock and on Broadway with such stars as Bernadette Peters, Mickey Rooney, Elaine Stritch, and Joel Grey. Her final Broadway endeavor was in Michael Bennett’s Ballroom.

Miss Dorothy began her teaching career and joined the American Ballet Center, the official school of the Robert Joffrey Ballet Company. For 25 years, she was Head of the Children’s Department. She was responsible for rehearsing 65 children for the New York performances of the Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

Her credits include co-authoring the book “Conversations with Choreographers” in 1996, interviewing all the well-known choreographers on stage and screen. In 1997, she moved back to the Pensacola area and is now the Ballet Mistress for the NFB, dance coach for Tate High School’s Colorguard, and choreographer for Tate High’s musicals. She is very proud of the students and teachers performing and teaching in all mediums of dance from Classical Ballet Companies to Broadway and television. Her motto is “dance for those who try.”

Bernadette Clements Sims, Founder

Bernadette Sims studied with Mary Lou Noletto, Lee Partridge and Duane Dishion. At the age of 18 she auditioned for George Balanchine and placed third in a regional audition for study at the School of American Ballet in New York City. She won a scholarship to study with Alexandra Danilova at the Ballet Arts Studio at Carnegie Hall. She also studied with Robert Joffrey and Richard Englund and performed with the Mobile Ballet, the New Orleans Ballet and the Birmingham Ballet. In 1964 she was 1st runner up to Miss Alabama. After marrying she moved to Fort Walton Beach and founded the Northwest Florida Ballet in 1969.

2018-2019 STAFF CONT. & PRINCIPAL ARTISTS David Ott, NFB Music Director

David Ott ranks among America’s most-performed composers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His works have been performed or recorded by some of America’s and Europe’s most renowned orchestras, including the Chicago, National, Minnesota, Atlanta and London Symphonies. He has garnered critical praise and received numerous awards for his compositions and continues to be commissioned for works by major orchestras throughout the U.S. He has been cited as “one of the greats of American symphony music composers of the last quarter of the twentieth century.”

Presently Ott is Music Director and Conductor of the Panama City Pops Orchestra, a sixty-five piece ensemble that performs six concerts each season. He also serves as Director of Music Ministries and Organist at Christ the King Episcopal Church in Santa Rosa Beach, where he leads a chamber music concert series.

Adiarys Almeida, Principal Guest Artist

Born and raised in Matanzas, Cuba, Ms. Almeida was a former Cincinnati Ballet and Corella Ballet Principal Dancer and First Soloist with Boston Ballet. Her professional training includes The Vocational Arts School “Alfonso Perez Isaac” in Matanzas, Cuba and The National Ballet School in Havana, Cuba. After graduating in 2001, she joined the National Ballet of Cuba under the direction of Alicia Alonso where she danced from 2001-2003.

Ms. Almeida participated at The International Ballet Competition in Havana, Cuba, where she received the Silver Medal in 1997 and 1998 and the Gold Medal in 1999 and 2000. In 1999 she participated at the International Ballet Competition in Nagoya, Japan and the Gala of Ballet Muses in Tokyo as a partner of Cuban ballet prodigy Rolando Sarabia. She was also the first Cuban female dancer to be a finalist at the USA International Ballet Competition in 2006.

Ms. Almeida’s major principal roles includes Giselle in Devon Carney, Magaly Suarez and Robert Hill’s “Giselle”, Juliet in Victoria Morgan’s “Romeo & Juliet”, Nikiya in “La Bayadere”, Kitri in Kevin Mckenzie and Vladimir Vasiliev’s “Don Quixote”, Medora in “Le Corsaire”, Aurora in Frederick Ashton, Marcelo Angelini, Paul Chalmer and Kirk Peterson’s “Sleeping Beauty”, Odette-Odile in Angel Corella, Victoria Morgan, Magaly Suarez and Robert Hill’s “Swan Lake”, Clara in Alicia Alonso’s “Nutcracker”, Marie in Val Caniparoli’s “Nutcracker”, Carmen in Kirk Peterson’s “Carmen”, Lisa in Jose Pares “La Fille Mal Gardee”, Gamzatti in Natalia Makarova’s “La Bayadere”, Swanilda in Jose Pares and Balanchine/Danilova’s “Coppelia”, Cinderella in “Cinderella”, Mazurka in Florence Clerc’s “Les Sylphides”, Sugar Plum Fairy and Snow Queen in Mikko Nissinen’s and Victoria Morgan’s “Nutcracker”, Amour and Maid of Honor in Nureyev’s “Don Quixote” and Lady Guinevere in Victoria Morgan’s King Arthur’s “Camelot”.

Taras Domitro, Principal Guest Artist

Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Mr. Domitro was a former Principal Dancer with National Ballet of Cuba and San Francisco Ballet. He trained at Alejo Carpentier School and the National Ballet School in Havana.

Mr. Domitro was nominated for best male dancer at the 2013 Benois de la Danse.

He also won the 2008 Gold Medal at the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, Florida, the Grand Prix at Peru’s International Ballet Festival in 2003, and 1st Prize and the Revelation Award at International Ballet Competition and Ballet Academies Festival in Havana, Cuba in 2000. At age 20 he became a Principal Dancer with the National Ballet of Cuba and started to build an incredible career sharing the stage with some amazing renowned dancers such as Italian Prima Ballerina Carla Fracci. Later he continued acquiring a large and versatile repertoire at San Francisco Ballet.

Eduardo Pi Iglesias, Principal Guest Artist

Born in Habana, Cuba, Mr. Iglesias graduated from Escuela Nacional de Ballet de Cuba in 2005. In 2003 he won the 3rd prize at International Ballet Competition in Habana. After the competition, he joined company PRO DANZA, he was in the company for two years working with Laura Alonso, Fernando Alonso and Frank Andersen.

In 2009, he joined Ballet de Monterrey. His roles with the company included the Basilio in Don Quixote, the pas de trois in Swan Lake, Franz in Coppelia, the peasant pas de deux and Hilarion in Gisele, the Flames of Paris pas de deux, the Tchaikovsky pas de deux, the Nutcracker and sugar plum prince in the Nutcracker, Golden Idol in Bayadere, Mercutio in Jorge Amarante’s Romeo and Juliet, 4th movement soloist from Yuri Posokov’s Diving in to the Lilacs, soloist from Bruch Violin Concerto, Six dans by Jiri Kylian, Torero as Carmen Ballet and many soloist roles of neoclassical and contemporary repertoire of the company. In 2012 he became a soloist and eventually promoted to principal in 2014.

In 2017 he joined Mobile Ballet Company as a Ballet Master for the entire season.

Currently he is dancing with Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami.

Darren McIntyre, Principal Guest Artist

Originally from Port Macquarie, NSW Australia, Darren McIntyre is a graduate of The Australian Ballet School receiving his Advanced Diploma of Dance. Presently, Mr. McIntyre is Artist in Residence & Ballet Master with Fort Wayne Ballet (IN-USA), Guest Principal Dancer with Northwest Florida Ballet (FL-USA), and travels worldwide as a freelance Performer, Choreographer, Ballet Master, Dance Teacher, Adjudicator and RĂŠpĂŠtiteur.

Mr. McIntyre has toured extensively throughout the United States, Australia, Asia, Canada, Europe & South America, performing a wide range of both classical and contemporary works as a freelance artist & with such companies as Louisville Ballet (KY-USA), City Ballet of San Diego (CA-USA), Milwaukee Ballet (WI-USA), Ajkun Ballet Theatre (New York City-USA), The Landestheater Detmold in Germany, The National Ballet of Ireland & The Australian Ballet. This has expanded his repertory to include the title roles in all the traditional repertory ballets & has also seen him featured in works

Courtney Shealy, Principal Guest Artist

Courtney Shealy, from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, trained with Northwest Florida Ballet for nine years. She received scholarships to Summer Intensives at Boston Ballet, Next Generation Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and American Ballet Theatre. In 2014, she received third place at the Youth American Grand Prix semi-final for both senior classical and contemporary.

Miss. Shealy joined the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in September 2015, became an apprentice with the main Company in August 2016 and joined the corps de ballet in January 2017.

David Ward, Principal Guest Artist

Former leading dancer with BalletMet where he spent seven years, David Ward trained at the English National Ballet School and spent five years dancing with Northern Ballet in Leeds, England. For a second year Mr. Ward will join many companies performing lead roles across the USA as a freelance artist, including NFB. Mr. Ward’s career highlights include touring across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand, as well as dancing for Prince Edward. He also danced in the International Ballet Stars Gala and was a guest performer in Las Vegas. During summer 2019 he, with his wife Emily as his co-director, will create their first summer intensive course in Bozeman, Montana. Mr. Ward also has been asked to set and stage for world renowned Choreographer Edwaard Liang and looks forward to this wonderful opportunity later this season.

Mr. Ward’s favorite performances include the title roles of Hamlet, Peter Pan and Dracula. The most memorable performances include dancing the role of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and the Cavalier in The Nutcracker as well as and the Prince in Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

Daniel White, Principal Guest Artist

Daniel White, although born in New York, began his training at the Georgia Academy of Dance, working under the tutelage of distinguished choreographers such as Yasmine Hasaan.

At the age of 15, Mr. White enrolled at The Ailey School, earning opportunities to perform alongside the professional company, Alvin Ailey, in masterworks such as Revelations. He later continued his training with The Joffrey Concert group, dancing in ballets such as Gerald Arpino’s Kettentanz and Light Rain and danced with New York Dance Project as an apprentice under Davis Robertson. Mr. White also guested with Dimensions Dance Miami for their 2018 Joyce season before joining Ailey II as an apprentice.

Brent Whitney, Principal Guest Artist

Originally from Traverse City, MI, Mr. Whitney began his training at Dance Arts Academy and Ballet Etc. He continued on as a dance major at Western Michigan University. His first professional job was with the Milwaukee Ballet Company where he performed a variety of classical and contemporary roles by some of the leading choreographers for the next four years.

Mr. Whitney has also danced for the Ballet NY, Ballet X, Connecticut Ballet, New York Theatre Ballet, San Diego Opera, Toledo Opera, Carolina Opera, Dance Key West, Lustig Dance Theatre, and the Oakland Ballet. Some of his performance highlights include Forsythe's "Slingerland duet", Balanchine's "Agon" and "Who Cares", Stanton Welch's "Orange", Iago in John Butler's "Othello", and Mark Goddens "The Magic Flute". His classical repertoire includes Swan Lake, Giselle, Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Q, Dracula, and Romeo & Juliet.

Brent is also a choreographer and has created work for a variety of companies, as well as his own company that he is the founder and co-artistic director of, The Traverse City Dance Project (tcdanceproject.org). Brent is a licensed Massage Therapist and has his associates degree in occupational health.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Synopsis This ballet consists of four interconnecting plots, connected by a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta. It is set simultaneously in the woodland and in the realm of Fairyland, under the light of the moon.

The Rustics’ plan to put on a play for the wedding of the Duke and the Queen. They get together to start the rehearsals.

Hermia, who is in love with Lysander, resilient to her father Egeus' demand that she wed Demetrius, whom he has arranged for her to marry. Helena, meanwhile, is totally in love with Demetrius.

In a parallel plot line, Oberon, king of the fairies, and Titania, his queen, have come to the forest outside Athens. Oberon and Titania are estranged because Titania refuses to give her Indian Boy to Oberon for use as his "knight" or "henchman", since the child's mother was one of Titania's worshipers. Oberon seeks to punish Titania's disobedience. He calls upon Robin "Puck" Goodfellow to help him find a magical juice derived from a flower called “love-in-idleness". When the magical juice is applied to the eyelids of a sleeping person, that person, upon waking, falls in love with the first living thing they perceive. He instructs Puck to retrieve the flower with the hope that he might make Titania fall in love with an animal of the forest and thereby shame her into giving up the little Indian boy.

Hermia and Lysander have escaped to the same forest and Helena, desperate to reclaim Demetrius' love, tells Demetrius about the plan and he follows them. Helena continually makes advances towards Demetrius, promising to love him more than Hermia. However, he rejects her.

Observing this, Oberon orders Puck to spread some of the magical juice from the flower on the eyelids of the young Athenian man. Instead, Puck mistakes Lysander for Demetrius, not having actually seen either before, and administers the juice to the sleeping Lysander. Helena, coming across him, wakes him while attempting to determine whether he is dead or asleep.

Upon this happening, Lysander immediately falls in love with Helena. Oberon sees Demetrius still following Hermia and is enraged. When Demetrius goes to sleep, Oberon sends Puck to get Helena while he charms Demetrius' eyes. Upon waking up, he sees Helena. Now, both men are in pursuit of Helena. However, she is convinced that her two suitors are mocking her, as neither loved her originally. Hermia is at a loss to see why her lover has abandoned her and accuses Helena of stealing Lysander away from her.

The four quarrel with each other until Lysander and Demetrius become so enraged that they seek a place to duel to prove whose love for Helena is the greater. Oberon orders Puck to keep Lysander and Demetrius from catching up with one another and to remove the charm from Lysander.

Lysander returns to loving Hermia, while Demetrius continues to love Helena.

The fairies then disappear, and Theseus and Hippolyta arrive on the scene during an early morning hunt. They wake the lovers and, since Demetrius no longer loves Hermia, Theseus overrules Egeus' demands and arranges a group wedding. The lovers decide that the night's events must have been a dream.

Meanwhile, the Rustics have arranged to perform their play for Theseus' wedding and venture into the forest, near Titania's bower, for their rehearsal. Bottom is spotted by Puck, who transforms his head into that of a donkey. When Bottom returns for his next lines, the other workmen run screaming in terror claiming that they are haunted much to Bottom's confusion since he has no idea what has happened.

Titania, having received the love-potion, is awakened and immediately falls in love with him.

While she is in this state of devotion, Oberon having achieved his goals, orders Puck to remove the donkey's head from Bottom and settle his differences.

Afterward, Oberon, Titania, Puck, and other fairies enter and bless them with good fortune. Puck "restores amends" and suggests to the audience that what they just experienced might be nothing more than a dream.
