GREETINGS

August 2023

Dear Friends,

As we prepare to celebrate the School of American Ballet’s 90th Anniversary in 2024, we have dedicated this year to reflecting on our bold mission in today’s context and envisioning strong advancements in how we train and support future generations of ballet dancers.

In the following pages, we share glimpses of the everyday experience at SAB—our students in the studio and on the stage, the return of our national recruitment tour to pre-pandemic levels, and the celebratory experience of our most advanced students embarking on their next journeys. We announce important new expansions to our artistic, choreographic, and wellness offerings and recognize the generous supporters who are making these crucial developments possible. And we share our gratitude for our alumni who are giving back to the School and inspiring the students who strive to follow in their footsteps.

SAB would not be nearing nine decades of leadership and service to the ballet field without the visionary foundation laid by our founders, George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, who were continually looking to the future, and the ongoing and passionate support of our community. We share our deepest appreciation to our faculty, pianists, and staff; our Board of Directors and Advisory Council; our Event Chairs; and the many volunteers who dedicate their time and talents in service of our students and the School. And we thank every one of you, our generous supporters, who are making dreams come true for our talented young dancers.

With deepest gratitude,

WHAT’S NEW AT SAB

Expanded Choreographic Opportunities

Seminal moments in SAB’s longstanding commitment to our students’ choreographic aspirations include the creation of the Student Choreography Workshop 25 years ago and later the Female Choreography Project in 2015. This year, SAB’s choreographic offerings took another leap forward thanks to a transformative $1 million gift from Zita J. Ezpeleta and Kewsong Lee

Through the Choreographic Expansion Program, SAB can better develop future choreographers via new mentorship opportunities and dance composition classes for advanced students. Justin Peck, Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor at New York City Ballet, mentored students in the fall as Student Choreography Advisor To further address the longstanding gender barrier in ballet choreography, choreographer and NYCB Soloist Emily Kikta provided additional support for female students as Female Choreography Fellow (a role funded

by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation). Weekly dance composition classes piloted during Summer Course and continuing this Winter Term expand our advanced students’ understanding of choreographic fundamentals, giving them additional tools to support their experiences in new choreography as dancers and dancemakers.

Our budding choreographers now benefit from exceptional access to meet and learn from ballet’s top creative talents as they prepare their own pieces to debut at SAB’s annual student choreography showings. On behalf of our students and the legions of audiences who will enjoy their works for years to come, SAB salutes Zita and Kewsong for such a meaningful investment in our young artists and in the future of ballet.

Exposure to Contemporary Dance

This summer, SAB expanded its curriculum to include contemporary dance classes for our most advanced students. This exciting development aligns with the School’s strategic plan to even better equip our students with the necessary skills to succeed in today’s professional ballet job market.

Classes build on our growing efforts in recent years to expose our students to more contemporary styles with renowned guest choreographers and repetiteurs like Kyle Abraham or Noah Gelber for William Forsythe Repertory. Now, thanks to underwriting by Advisory Council member Jacqueline Erdman of Wyoming and the Carol Franc Buck Foundation, advanced students have the opportunity to participate in weekly Contemporary Classes taught by Juilliard-trained instructors Madison Hicks and Taylor LaBruzzo.

The teachers here at SAB care so much for us, and I always feel supported inside and outside of the studio. I have learned so much not only about my technique, but also musicality, performing, and how to really develop as an artist.”

Movement is Medicine

SAB’s ever-deepening commitment to holistic student wellness took another important step forward this year in the area of physical wellness.

As Aesha Ash began her new role as Associate Chair of Faculty this past fall, she consulted with SAB in-house professionals as well as outside specialists in the dance rehabilitation field to conceive of further enhancements to our strong program of physical therapy and conditioning for our intermediate and advanced students. Through those conversations, a new idea was born to launch a weekly Rehab Class for students coming back from injury. She shares, “When our students are down and injured, while there are so many benefits to watching class, they want to move—they don’t want to get stuck in a rut. For them, movement is medicine.” Through the new Rehab Class, injured students can return to the studio in reduced capacities to safely pursue their training and ballet education while nurturing their injuries and regaining strength.

In addition to the Rehab Class, advanced students received an expanded schedule of wellness and self-care seminars focusing on optimal nutrition, hydration, sleep, and mental health. SAB’s conditioning coaches have advised throughout the year on the advanced students’ changing conditioning needs, and will begin doing individual conditioning assessments for our most advanced students at the start of the coming year.

SAB’s dedication to its artist-athletes is ever growing and evident in SAB’s studios every day.

NEXT STEPS

The following words were shared at the 2023 Workshop Performances by Sion Harrington, Dean of Students and Alumni Affairs, in honor of SAB’s Capstone Class. Our newest batch of alumni, these talented young artists are now taking their next steps as professional dancers and college students.

“I want to thank this group, in particular, for your commitment to each other and to our school’s values. You truly are leaders among your peers. I have been grateful for your willingness to speak up for yourselves and your fellow students, and I know that our community has been positively shaped by your commitment to equity and inclusion. With young people like you heading out into the world, I have no doubt that the future will be kinder and braver.

I am excited to welcome each of you into our alumni community, and I wish each of you continued success and fulfillment as you begin this next chapter.”

Recognizing Outstanding Promise

Among this year’s impressive Capstone Class are three recipients of the annual Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise. This award was established over thirty years ago by Lawrence A. Wien with his daughters and their families in honor of Mrs. Wien, a great devotee of ballet. This year’s recipients are Oscar Estep, Natalie Glassie, and Mia Williams

Oscar Estep was born in San Diego and fell in love with dance after a viewing of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® during a visit to New York. The following year his family moved to New York City, and Oscar successfully auditioned for SAB at age six, training with us for the next 12 years. Oscar graduated in June from Professional Performing Arts School and recently attended the Royal Danish Ballet Summer

School. In August, Oscar became an apprentice with New York City Ballet. Also training with SAB since age six, Natalie Glassie was born in Brooklyn. She has performed in almost every New York City Ballet production that features parts for children, including two years as “Marie” in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® at ages 10 and 11. She graduated from Professional Children’s School in 2022 with awards for Excellence in Science and Political Theory. Natalie is headed to Pacific Northwest Ballet to join its Professional Division program.

Mia Williams started early dance training at age three in her hometown of Yuma, Arizona, and first attended SAB’s Summer Course at age 16. For the past two years, Mia lived in SAB’s onsite Residence Hall while training full time and attending Professional Performing Arts School, from which she recently graduated. At the June 2022 Workshop Performances, Mia originated a role

in the world premiere of Gianna Reisen’s Signs. Her dance journey led to Mia joining New York City Ballet in August as an apprentice.

Everyone at SAB celebrates Oscar, Natalie, Mia, and all our Capstone students who are taking their next steps by heading off to dance careers and academic exploration. We salute you!

Sheryl Ware (Mae L. Wien Recipient for Distinguished Service), Natalie Glassie, Oscar Estep, and Mia Williams
I definitely think SAB prepared me for a professional career in ballet, not only technically but emotionally as well. The teachers allowed me to explore myself artistically and use my emotions to enhance my dancing. I am so happy to say that I have signed a contract with Houston Ballet and will be joining next season as an apprentice.”

BECOMING A TEACHER, FOREVER A STUDENT: A Conversation with Silas Farley

You and your fellow alumni have helped to advance a deeper understanding at SAB of what it means to pursue diversity, equity, and inclusion in ballet. How does this inform the way you approach your craft?

It’s about access and encouragement, and that has to be intentional. It’s not going to happen by osmosis. Once you get to an Olympian environment like SAB where so much of the work is predicated upon competition and correction, there’s a need for encouragement, mentorship, and role models.

What are the most important lessons you want your students to take with them?

Silas Farley, 2023-2024 Principal Guest Teacher, is a ballet teacher and choreographer who trained at SAB (2008-2012) before dancing with NYCB (2012-2020). He serves on the board of The George Balanchine Foundation and is the Armstrong Artist in Residence in Ballet at The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University.

What experience did you have as a student that informs your path as a teacher?

It’s not a singular moment, but rather a thread through my time as a student. It was sitting in the doorway, watching the classes and writing down what the teachers were saying. I felt this joyful urgency to document as much as I could—I wanted to catch the flame, internalize the ideas, and articulate them. My calling was to help synthesize these ideas.

What about SAB’s approach and the Balanchine legacy captivated you?

I think about it not being a narrow style, but an expansive approach to the whole of dancing. Balanchine was pursuing the possibilities of what the body could do in the language of ballet. It was constant experimentation, constant exploration. For me, the whole Balanchine approach is about musicality and this double-edged sword of zeroing in on detail while facilitating a boundlessness of movement. Even deeper, it’s a commitment to endless exploration and fascination with ballet itself as a language. That’s the essence.

First and foremost is the experience of joy. The second is to connect their individual experience with the historically transcendent community of artists. Third is to teach them how to teach themselves–to give them the tools so that they can hold themselves accountable.

What does your appointment to 2023-2024 Principal Guest Teacher, alongside SAB alumna Debra Austin, mean to you?

It’s such joy to come back and make a fuller contribution— to participate, encourage, and learn from the current teachers, to share what I’m finding in how different lineages of ballet relate to each other, and to help students connect their personal experiences with SAB and ballet history—it’s very exciting. And then to do this with Debra Austin, who I admired as a student, makes this even more special.

Since 2017, SAB alumni from diverse backgrounds and career experiences have been appointed Principal Guest Teachers (formerly Visiting Faculty Chairs) to support the diversification of SAB’s faculty. Past appointees include Andrea Long (2017-2018), Aesha Ash (2018-2020), Alicia Holloway & Leyland Simmons (2020-2022), and Aaron Jackson & Margaret Severin-Hansen (2022-2023).

CELEBRATING THE “BEAUTY OF BALLET”

Variations, Stars and Stripes, Swan Lake, Tschaikovsky Pas De Deux, and Union Jack. These invaluable performance opportunities also helped our students learn how to anticipate the number of shoes, tights, and bobby pins needed; “quick-change” their hair and costumes; and adjust to various stage sizes.

The Beauty of Ballet events also garnered excitement for trying out for SAB at our Community Auditions in April. Young attendees asked the dancers questions such as: “What is it like to wear a costume?" "Are you scared to be on stage?" "How do you memorize all the steps?” A favorite parting goodbye was: “Ms. Killian, I’m coming to audition. I’m your next swan!”

SAB began bringing Beauty of Ballet LectureDemonstrations to New York City communities 2010. Katrina Killian, Children’s Division Manager and Mae L. Wien Faculty Chair, prepares our students and leads the lecture-demonstrations, which have been an instrumental tool for introducing Balanchine and ballet to broader audiences. Thousands of children have auditioned for the SAB Children’s Division following the demonstrations and made SAB’s student body stronger and more diverse—shaping the future of ballet.

In February and March, SAB presented four free Beauty of Ballet Lecture-Demonstrations for over 900 children and their families at venues in the Bronx, Harlem, and Queens. Curated by Ms. Killian and accompanied by pianist Leo Shih, each hour-long program featured a cast of 12-15 Advanced Division students. Ms. Killian narrated barre demonstrations, and students performed excerpts from iconic ballets including Raymonda

A Shared Legacy

at

For over 40 years, Michael Tsuji attended SAB’s annual Workshop Performances and experienced immense joy watching future ballet stars make their public debuts. He cared greatly about our students, and knowing his legacy could positively impact the School’s future, he joined our Founder’s Society by designating SAB as one of his estate recipients. Now, upon his passing earlier this year, Michael’s legacy and SAB’s future are forever intertwined.

A Triumphant Return to a City Near You

This past January, nine faculty members embarked on a cross-country trip to scout students for SAB’s summer training programs, heralding the highly anticipated return of the National Audition Tour. After the pandemic halted in-person gatherings in 2020, the School pivoted to an entirely virtual audition season to safely sustain its annual search for talented dancers. Following its two-year hiatus, the National Audition Tour relaunched in 2023 with visits to 17 cities while still accepting video auditions. Over 70 audition classes provided young dancers with opportunities to engage directly with our faculty and vie for a space in SAB’s 2023 summer programs.

A linchpin of the School’s recruitment efforts for over 50 years, the National Audition Tour helps connect SAB with the widest pool of applicants possible. From Miami to Seattle and points in between, faculty taught and met with over 2,300 applicants who reflect America’s diverse communities and the vibrant future of ballet. The School invited 343 young dancers from 33 states and 12 countries to train in our five-week Summer Course or one-week New York Junior Session. Ultimately, 26 summer students were invited to train full time in the School’s 2023-2024 Winter Term. The passion witnessed on tour left us inspired and excited to continue imparting the Balanchine aesthetic to the next generation of dancers this coming summer.

Keeping Us on Our Toes

The School of American Ballet is delighted to announce the creation of the Coco F. Kopelman Pointe Shoe Fund, established by Arie Kopelman in honor of his wife Coco Kopelman, an alumna and longtime board member.

From their first toe class in Girls IV through their final bows at the Workshop Performances, SAB’s students go through hundreds of pointe shoes. Handmade by highly trained shoemakers in London, each pair can cost nearly $100. Such an expense can prohibit aspiring dancers from pursuing ballet or keep them from replacing worn-down shoes and thus causing injuries to their feet and legs that could derail a promising ballet career.

The School’s Pointe Shoe Fund provided over $80,000 this year in subsidies to help bring the cost of pointe shoes down to $0-$65 per pair depending on student need. The Kopelman family’s generous endowment gift to create the Coco F. Kopelman Pointe Shoe Fund will help SAB support and grow these key subsidies for years to come, ensuring that our talented students can remain on pointe.

As soon as I stepped into the beautiful studios, I knew it was where I belonged. SAB is such a special place for me, because it feels like I’ve finally found a place where I fit in. I have always felt a little like an outsider in the world of ballet, but not here. Here, within these walls and with these amazing teachers, it feels like I’m one step closer to my goal of becoming a professional dancer.”

RECYCLE WITH PETIT PAS

Petit Pas NYC founder Ozgem Ornektekin approached SAB in 2017 with a novel idea: what if, instead of discarding our students’ used pointe shoes, we turned them into stylish bracelets? Six years later, we have saved thousands of shoes from landfills and accessorized dancers, fans, and sustainability-minded people worldwide!

Petit Pas further supports our students— who wear out 2-3 pairs of pointe shoes every week—by donating a portion of proceeds to subsidize their shoe costs. To date, this project has provided over $14,000 in funding for new shoes! Buy your bracelets today at https://petitpas.nyc/!

APPLAUDING OUR SPECIAL EVENTS

School of American Ballet Ball

Nutcracker Family Benefit

New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet reunited for the City’s favorite holiday event, the Nutcracker Family Benefit featuring the celebrated production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Over 700 guests gathered at the David H. Koch Theater for the sold-out event. Young attendees were delighted with special appearances from the Sugar Plum Fairy, Herr Drosselmeier, and other costumed performers at the party, which also featured a stunning array of activities including holiday crafts, sweet treats, face-painting, and balloon artists.

Hosted with vivacious humor by Tony® Award-winning stage and screen actress Laura Benanti, the SAB Ball packed a pink punch this year with exquisite fuchsia florals and glistening displays of jewels courtesy of sponsor Graff. The highlight of the evening was the world premiere pièce d’occasion from choreographer Caili Quan, who has created works for BalletX, The Juilliard School, and Vail Dance Festival. Performed by SAB’s extraordinary students, this year’s artistry offered an immersive dance experience unattainable anywhere else.

Workshop Benefit

SAB’s Workshop is a time-honored tradition that has launched the careers of generations of ballet dancers worldwide. This year’s inspired program, combined with the dedication and passion of our students, made for an unforgettable experience. Workshop Benefit guests were delighted by our students’ talent as they danced excerpts from August Bournonville’s Napoli and George Balanchine’s Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet and Coppélia. Students also performed Balanchine’s sparkling La Source The dazzling evening culminated in a celebratory dinner at the revitalized David Geffen Hall.
