As we proudly celebrate the School of American Ballet’s milestone 90th anniversary, we continue to build on our storied past to envision an exceptional future.
George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein left us a profound gift that continues to inspire and bring joy to young dancers and the world. As alumnus Silas Farley captured at a talk this past spring, Mr. B. and Lincoln’s fundamental principles continue to propel us today: the development of a School and a Company—independent yet forever linked; Balanchine ballets as teaching tools; and a deep commitment to working in service to the art. If only they could see us now.
SAB continues to produce more professional dancers than any other American ballet school, populating our sister company New York City Ballet (NYCB) and 80 dance companies worldwide. Over 800 students grace our studios each year, learning from renowned teachers and the expansive ballet repertory, and growing into healthy and remarkable young people. We are proud that SAB and ballet have given them an invaluable experience and tools to excel both on stage and in life, and we are striving to serve our students ever better and prepare them to meet the demands of our evolving art form and world.
Ninety years would not be possible without generations of artistic and administrative staff, passionate board members, event chairs, and volunteers working in service to SAB and our students. We salute Board Chair Zita Ezpeleta and everyone who has served alongside us in this 90th anniversary year. And we recognize the impact of the generous support of our dear patrons. The following pages are a tribute to SAB and to each of you. We thank you, and we look forward to the future at the School of American Ballet.
With deepest gratitude,
Carrie W. Hinrichs Jonathan Stafford

This was where ballet grew up and a new American way of dancing was born – the result of the persistence and vision of Balanchine.

“Sharing a bond with the public through the universal language of music and dance is my way of making the world a better place!”

Readying our students for performing careers is at the heart of our work. The opportunity to perform with New York City Ballet, in showcases at SAB, and throughout our community provides rich insight into the joys and demands of a life on the stage.
Expanded opportunities this year provided 407 students with invaluable performing experience. Advanced Division students danced for public audiences in choreography workshops, Lecture-Demonstrations, and the fully-staged Workshop Performances. Half of Children’s Division students were given the unique opportunity to perform the children’s roles in NYCB productions including George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Nearly 200 students participated in SAB’s first annual Children’s Division Spring Showcase. And, for the first time, students at all levels performed on the stage of the David H. Koch Theater at the 90th Anniversary Ball
The School of American Ballet is founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, aged 29 and 26, with an inaugural class of 32 students in studios at 637 Madison Avenue.
Early faculty consists of Balanchine, Dorothie Littlefield, Muriel Stuart, and Pierre Vladimiroff.
On June 10, Balanchine premieres his first ballet choreographed in America, with SAB students performing Serenade at Edward M.M. Warburg’s family estate.
1938 SAB holds its first summer course.

I want to recognize the accomplishments of the Capstone Class of 2024. You have shown tremendous dedication, effort, and engagement in planning for your futures. Wherever your next steps are taking you, please know it has been a true privilege to work with all of you, and I look forward to cheering you on and seeing where your lives take you. You are all unique and remarkable and should be incredibly proud of the young adults you have grown to be.
By Aesha Ash, Associate Chair of Faculty
This year’s recipients of the prestigious Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise are Becket Jones, Alexander “Xander” Perone, and Kylie Williams.
The SAB journey for Becket Jones began at the 2019 Summer Course, and she has done nothing but grow and shine
since. Not only a beautiful dancer, she has consistently exemplified the qualities of an outstanding student. What has always intrigued me about Becket is her quiet power. She watches, listens, and studies. Then she explodes onto the stage with confidence and maturity.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Alexander “Xander” Perone is pure sunshine. His energy is contagious, and even during tough days, you would be hard-pressed to find a moment where Xander is not smiling – sweating from head to toe but smiling! Saying that he is an exemplary student would be an understatement. His work ethic, versatility, strength, artistry, and eagerness to learn make him a joy to work with.
Kylie Williams’ arrival at SAB two years ago marked the beginning of her exceptional journey in our studios. She performs with the mature confidence of a more seasoned dancer. She is eager for challenges and is always willing to be pushed beyond her limits. But don’t worry, her teachers kept finding ways to ask for even more. Kylie dances with a captivating blend of power and beauty, all delicately held together with graceful fragility.
It is with great pride and joy that I congratulate and recognize Becket, Xander, and Kylie as the recipients of this year’s Mae L. Wien Award.
The Children’s Division is added under the direction of Kyra Blanc.
A scholarship program is established to provide tuition aid for promising students.
Faculty includes Felia Dubrovska, Anatole Oboukoff, alumna Elise Reiman, and Antonia Tumkovsky.
SAB’s commitment to choreography is foundational. The first piece George Balanchine created in America, Serenade, was developed on our students. Renowned choreographers Jerome Robbins and Christopher Wheeldon followed suit, creating timeless classics that showcase SAB’s training and its students.
Today, the School has become an incubator for new choreographic talent. The annual Student Choreography Workshop and Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Evening for Female Choreography, and the 2023 addition of composition classes to the Winter Term and Summer Course curriculum underwritten by Board Chair Zita Ezpeleta with the LEAP for Choreography Fund, ensure that students have ample opportunities to explore their choreographic talents.
And, at SAB, role models abound.
Justin Peck, Tony Award winner and NYCB Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor, serves as Student Choreography Advisor alongside Female Choreography Fellow Emily Kikta. Having first flexed his choreographic muscles in the 2005 Student Choreography Workshop, Justin now guides students wishing to follow in his footsteps. Peck recently shared, “I ask them a lot of questions to get them thinking about their own work and how they approach it and shape it. Always providing my own personal experience and process as a touchpoint.”
For this year’s Workshop Performances, students enjoyed the opportunity to learn from another SAB alum who is making her mark as Resident Choreographer with Paul Taylor Dance Company: Lauren Lovette. Of Tendu, the piece Lovette created on SAB students, New York Times dance critic Gia Kourlas wrote: “Inspired by a photograph of Balanchine with his palm mirroring his foot brushed forward in that fundamental movement, Lovette crystallized the vivacious energy of eight young students as they stretched their athleticism and artistry to such joyful limits that sometimes they seemed to surprise themselves.”
“This year I was lucky enough to participate in SAB’s
Female
Choreography Project and create my first ballet on my peers. I am very proud for throwing myself in uncharted territory and pushing my boundaries.”
– Manuela, age 17

SAB moves to larger studios at 2291 Broadway.
This year, SAB welcomed a new member to the School’s faculty: Christopher Charles McDaniel
Hailing from East Harlem, Christopher began his ballet training at the Dance Theatre of Harlem School at age 10, working closely with DTH founder and School of American Ballet/New York
City Ballet alumnus Arthur Mitchell. He subsequently studied dance at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, Boston Ballet, and Ballet Academy East.
Christopher performed professionally with Dance Theatre of Harlem, Los Angeles Ballet, and Ballet San Antonio. He has worked as a ballet instructor throughout his performing career, serving on the faculties of Los Angeles Ballet School, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Debbie Allen Dance Academy, Ballet Conservatory of South Texas, San Antonio Ballet School, and Connally’s Dance Workshop. As a choreographer, Christopher has created works for Ballet Academy East, Los Angeles Ballet, Lake Tahoe Dance Festival, Ballet San Antonio, Ballet Conservatory of South Texas, Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Virtual 2020 Vision Gala, and the 2022 Stars of American Ballet tour.
SAB is honored to introduce five new members of the School’s Board of Directors: marketing professional Karen Adams Horton; Nicole Kim Murphy, Director of Consumer Engagement, Champagne & Sparkling Portfolio at Moët Hennessy; Hilary Peek, finance executive; and former SAB parents and longtime supporters Benan Ozakbas Ellis and Sally Shreeves
School enrollment grows to 443 students. A grant from the Ford Foundation establishes a broader scholarship program, transforming SAB into a nationally recognized organization.
At SAB, Christopher was a 2016-2017 National Visiting Fellow and 2021-2023 Teaching Fellow. In September 2023, he was appointed to SAB’s faculty.
“SAB means excellence and possibilities. The history is rich and filled with some of the brightest stars in ballet. I feel a special responsibility [being] at SAB and helping develop the next generation of dancers.”

SAB moves to Lincoln Center, renting studios and offices from The Juilliard School.
Alumnus Richard Rapp and Suki Schorer join the permanent faculty, marking the first time a portion of the faculty hails from the Balanchine aesthetic rather than Imperial or European traditions.

The School of American Ballet has been profoundly shaped by the more than 17,000 dancers who have graced our studios since our doors first opened on January 2, 1934. Whether training with us for one Summer Course, one Winter Term, or many years, SAB celebrates alumni accomplishments, on stage and off.
As we commemorate the School’s 90th anniversary, we are profoundly honored to announce the creation of SAB: Alumni Connect, offering meaningful engagement opportunities for the members of our diverse and multi-generational alumni community. No matter the level
of engagement desired, it is our sincere hope that SAB’s treasured alumni will find a space for themselves in SAB: Alumni Connect.
SAB has also established an annual Alumni of Distinction Award. This award will lift our alumni’s achievements to a larger audience and illuminate the influence and impact they have on the communities and cultures of their lives. It will also give the School the important opportunity to explore openly how a foundation in classical ballet training at SAB contributes to broadly defined success in ballet and beyond. We are deeply honored to share that the inaugural Award recipients are photographer Rosalie O’Connor and actor, singer, and dancer Hinton Battle (1956-2024).
To learn more, visit the School’s new alumni page at sab.org/sab-alumniconnect or contact Sion Harrington, Dean of Student and Alumni Affairs, at alumni@sab.org. We look forward to being in touch and hope to see you soon.
“We, the Battle Family, would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the respect and love the School of American Ballet and Alumni have for Hinton. [Honoring Hinton with the] first Alumni of Distinction Award ensures his legacy and inspiration will live on in the halls and hearts of the Alumni and students of the School of American Ballet. Thank You.”
– Lettie Battle

“SAB has changed a lot over the years, but what remains constant is a strive for excellence. These young dancers have a path, and they are determined to take that first step wherever it might lead.”
– Arch Higgins, Alumnus and Faculty Member
“I cannot recount my personal journey without highlighting the pivotal role this school has played in shaping who I am today. The training and environment prepared me for a career that spanned continents and equipped me to face every challenge with grace and resilience. This school is not merely a chapter in my story; it is the foundation of my artistry and my strength.”
– Aesha Ash, Alumna and Associate Chair of Faculty
“SAB has allowed the Balanchine aesthetic to thrive. You see that everywhere in the world that a Balanchine ballet or dancer takes the stage. I believe that Mr. Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein would be very proud of their school.”
– Kay Mazzo, Alumna and Faculty Member
“What does SAB mean to me? The best. A place of deep tradition reckoning with transformative change. The beating heart of American dance.”
– Julia Price, Registrar
“SAB is a big part of my life. Except for my grandchildren, it ranks number one. It is a joy to pass on everything I’ve learned dancing for New York City Ballet and from Mr. B. He changed the way dance looks and what ballet is. THANK YOU Lincoln and THANK YOU George and THANK YOU to our donors. Without you, SAB wouldn’t be what it is today.”
– Suki Schorer, Brown Foundation Senior Faculty Chair
“SAB taught me about striving for excellence, and that I had underestimated the meaning of excellence. What I thought was the best I could do, actually wasn’t as far as I could go. There was more detail, more nuance, more texture that I could find within each movement. I could hold an entire world in the way I shaped my fingers. I could communicate emotions beyond words with specificity of rhythm or the direction of my eyes.”
– Jenifer Ringer, Alumna and incoming Director of Intermediate/Advanced Divisions and Artistic Programming
“SAB has not only been my workplace, but my home for nearly two decades. I have had a front-row seat to witness our students as not only thriving artists but thriving human beings. I have never lost sight of how special it is to see our students grow up as artists and people.”
– Sion Harrington, Dean of Student and Alumni Affairs
“It is incredibly rewarding to be a part of a child’s journey even in a small way. It doesn’t matter if that journey is short-lived or turns into a professional career. Students who are community leaders, have passions outside of ballet, or pursue higher education are celebrated.”
– Katy Vedder, Director of Student Life for Children’s Division and Wellness Programming
“It has been a privilege to be a witness to the hard work, determination, and perseverance of the students in class and the dedication of the faculty to pass on the tradition of excellence to the next generations.”
– Kate Woods, Database and Information Manager
By Elise Drew León, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Members of the School of American Ballet’s Alumni Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion (AACDI) are what I think of when I think of impact. Rooted in the SAB tradition, this multi-generational group of alumni has been contributing to the greater dance world for decades, as choreographers, directors, teachers, and more, all the while championing the ideas,
spirit, and tenacity they were taught as SAB students.
Their accumulated memories of SAB’s lineage tell a story of a school that has touched generations of dancers. They’ve founded companies, graced Broadway stages, and been the “firsts” to conquer what was once thought impossible. As
members of this committee, they pay it forward. Our school is better because of their voices and their vision. It is their impact that inspires me.
As we celebrate 90 years at SAB, it felt important to once again ask our AACDI members to share their reflections…
“My time at SAB informed so much of the artist I have become. Beyond the technique, the discipline, respect, and reverence for the art itself majorly contributed to how I approached work in dance, theater, film, television, or fashion.”
– Maurice Brandon Curry, Executive Artistic Director at Eglevsky Ballet
“SAB will always have a special place in my heart. It reminds me of the good times I had, the friends I made, and the things I learned. I grew socially, academically, and artistically to become the person I am today.”
– Ross Allen, Corps de Ballet at National Ballet of Canada
“Watching the care and development that has been put into ensuring that students have representation of themselves in every capacity…is such a joy to see. This is a genuine honest mission and Mr. Balanchine must be so proud of his school!”
– Damien Johnson, International freelance ballet teacher and mentor
SAB celebrates its 50th anniversary.
New faculty include alumna and future Chair of Faculty Kay Mazzo.
The creation of the Music Program provides education in music theory, history, and composition.
“My time at SAB not only shaped me as a dancer and artist but as a person. The largest difference I have noticed with the Diversity and Inclusion work is that there is now a presence of people of color on staff and in administrative positions. Representation is EXTREMELY important, and [as] an alumnus of color I understand how that would have shaped and possibly changed my years there as a student and my professional career as a dancer.”
– Shomaree
Potter, Costume Director at Carolina Ballet
“Now, the School seems to educate the entire dancer – reaching beyond or adding to excellence in technical training to prepare young dancers to see themselves on the stage…[and] possess the necessary tools to sustain a professional career.”
– Duane Cyrus, Director for the University of Arizona School of Dance
SAB thanks the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for awarding a grant of $150,000 to support our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work in 2023-2024. The Foundation first funded this work at the School in 2013, just a year after we launched our initial strategies to recruit and train more ballet dancers of color and place them at professional companies. This year’s grant helped make possible our expanded work in serving dancers of diverse backgrounds and identities and building a culture of access and belonging across our community of students, families, staff, and Board members.
SAB becomes a constituent of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The Mae L. Wien Awards are established to recognize outstanding promise and service.
The William Randolph Hearst Foundation provides grants in culture, education, health, and social service. Its mission is to identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States can build healthy, productive, and satisfying lives. Donna Kalajian Lagani, VP Eastern Director for the Hearst Foundations, said, “The William Randolph Hearst Foundation is proud to support SAB’s incredible work for these extraordinary young aspiring ballet dancers and for the ballet field.”
With the Foundation’s support, SAB made strong progress during 2023-2024. A record 60% of Winter
Term students were dancers of color, and the School placed three advanced students of color at professional companies. SAB convened its Alumni Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, staff Transformation Team, and Board DEI Committee for insight and guidance; hosted accomplished alumni of color Debra Austin and Silas Farley as 2023-2024 Principal Guest Teachers; and provided professional development and grants to five ballet teachers from diverse communities through the National Visiting Fellows Program. SAB also continued policies developed in recent years, including a more inclusive dress code and hair policy for students and greater performance access for families.
The School moves into its new headquarters in Lincoln Center’s Samuel B. and David Rose Building with state-of-the-art studios and a residence hall that allows SAB to house non-local students for the first time.
The Boys Program is created to encourage boys to study ballet.
New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet reunited again for the City’s favorite holiday event, the Nutcracker Family Benefit. Over 600 guests gathered at the David H. Koch Theater for another sold-out event featuring a matinee of the beloved production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker ®. Guests of all ages were delighted with special appearances from the Sugar Plum Fairy, Herr Drosselmeier, and other costumed performers, and they enjoyed festive activities including sweet treats, face-painting, and balloon artists.
In celebration of SAB’s 90th birthday, students from the Children’s and Advanced Divisions took to the David H. Koch Theater stage and demonstrated the full arc of the School’s training excellence. Over 1,400 guests enjoyed watching students perform In Creases by alumnus and New York City Ballet resident choreographer Justin Peck and were thrilled by a special guest performance of the iconic Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux by alumni and NYCB principal
dancers Tiler Peck and Roman Mejia. The 90th Anniversary Ball recognized our prestigious alumni and honored alumna and board member Coco F. Kopelman and longtime faculty member Suki Schorer, who have touched the lives of thousands of SAB students. With generous support from Chanel and Epoch Estate Wines, the evening was an incredible display of artistry and a toast to the legacy of the School of American Ballet.
The Workshop Benefit was a continuation of our 90th anniversary celebration and showcased works of profound significance to the School, including Serenade—also 90, Scènes de Ballet, Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2 3rd Movement, and the premiere of Tendu by SAB alumna and Paul Taylor Dance Company resident choreographer Lauren Lovette. After the exceptional performance, the crowd continued to a celebratory dinner at David Geffen Hall.
Workshop is a time-honored tradition that has launched the careers of generations of ballet dancers. Many of their success were assisted by the longtime commitments of Benefit honorees, board members Liz Armstrong and Helen Heineman Haje.
