When My Blood Turned

BLUE

W

hen I was a junior at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, my life would

take a dramatic and profound turn. A lifelong passion as an international trip leader/educator to Tropical America had begun.

During one of those sultry Carolina fall nights, I hopped on my golden Schwinn, crossed the St. Andrews causewalk and glided through the halls of the Science Center. These solo reflective journeys were welcomed during this highly social phase of life. Posted in a hallway, I read about a Winter Term trip to Belize, living on an island studying marine biology. It sounded so exotic and simply incredible. I buzzed back to Wilmington that night, stumbled into the dorm room of Diana Pretz and announced that we were headed to Belize, January 1979.

Several months later, Diana and I joined a motley crew of students

participating in a Belize Winter Term spearheaded by Dr. Leon Applegate and Dr. Michael Torres. Having never been to a third world country, I felt overwhelmed wandering the dusty streets of Belize City.

Diana and I always managed to duck into the nearest shady bar as we watched our professors fly by us in a “so called� taxi.

Once on the island, I found myself completely mesmerized as I snorkeled above the vast coral reefs surrounding South Water Caye. Every shade of blue was visible. I can still recall the tiny eyes of a miniscule secretary blenny peering out

of the reef, one of the many observations I made during our island retreat. There was no getting around this. My blood had turned blue, and I would spend a lifetime seeking blue water.

We traveled through Belize in an open air truck with two bench seats supporting a heap of sweaty students. I recall glancing down the line up meeting the eyes of our professors. My thoughts were, “Wow, they have the best job ever. This is what I want to do someday.”

In the summer of l988, I led my first trip to Belize, a tropical ecology expedition for teenagers. After graduate school, I had an incredible opportunity to work as a naturalist guide for Wilderness Southeast based in Savannah, Georgia. Over the last 30 years, my groups have trekked through steamy jungles, swum expansive coral reefs and visited villages in Central America and the Caribbean. In more recent years, I have offered expeditions to the biologically rich Sea Of Cortez and the remote South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga. While observing 6

reef fish remains a passion, I am now drawn to sharing the fascinating and complex behaviors of megafauna including manatees, whale sharks, gray whales and hump-

DeLanie Fant Goldston ‘54 donated a lovely bench to St. Andrews in memory of her sister-in-law Jean Sandifer Boney ‘53 and Thomas Evans Boney Sr., husband to Jean and brother to DeLanie. It now sits in the FMC Garden Neuk by the DeTamble Library for all to enjoy.

A Tribute to

Elizabeth (Betty) Holmes College Librarian

I

n 1966 Betty Holmes began her career at St. Andrews as a Reference and Music Librarian at the newly built DeTamble Library. By 1975 she had become the Library Director, serving until her retirement in 1998. For 32 years she provided St. Andrews with creative, intellectual, and dedicated energy. She carefully planned and embraced her role in moving the Library forward in the midst of ever changing methods and technology. As a well-respected and trusted faculty member, she served as a strong and reasonable voice on nearly every committee and task force imaginable with over 20 years on the Faculty Executive Committee.

Betty was also passionate about the creation of The Scottish Heritage Center at St. Andrews to preserve materials related to Scottish-American history, genealogy, traditions, and culture. She spent a sabbatical researching historical sources on the Highland Scots of North Carolina,

traveling to Nova Scotia and to Scotland.

She had a life-long passion for learning, traveling, reading, and experiencing life.

She also spent time in Italy developing library services at Brunnenburg to support the St. Andrews program. Her love for gardening and preservation lead her to the development of the Flora Macdonald Garden, including the arbor, gazebo, and benches. In 2009 she was honored with the Scottish Heritage Award.

Beyond her professional life, Betty had a heart for her family, a strong faith, and a commitment to serving the community.

She used her skills working with many organizations including Habitat, Sister City, The Arts Council, and First Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg and Asheville.
