t. Andrews celebrated its 122nd Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, on the DeTamble

Library Terrace, as 116 graduates were joined by their families and friends. This year’s class came from 17 countries and 17 states.

St. Andrews University Campus President Paul Baldasare Jr. ’77 welcomed all and reminded the seniors that their journey began with Convocation four years earlier, and today was the successful conclusion of their efforts.

Dr. Edna Ann Loftus, Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs, announced the Class of 1991 Distinguished Faculty award went to Science professor, Dr. Bonnie Draper.

President Baldasare presented the prestigious Algernon Sydney and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards that “recognizes the spiritual qualities of the recipients as reflected in their selfless gift of their time and energy in the service of others …”

The student award went to senior Gabrielle Stephens (Texas), and the community award to Laurinburg’s Jerry Riggins, owner of Jerry’s Deli and Grill and Pine Acres, for his contributions to St. Andrews for volunteering electrical contracting and expertise after the hurricane and additional contributions of service to St Andrews.

Kayla Carter (St. Andrews at Sandhills) and Eduardo Andrade, student government president for the past two years, were the selected senior class speakers.

The commencement speaker was the Honorable Robert S. Brewbaker, a 1969 St. Andrews graduate. After St. Andrews, he graduated from Union Theological Seminary and later the University of Virginia School of Law. Beginning in 1986, Mr. Brewbaker served for more than 25 years on the St. Andrews Board of Trustees.

He is a former trial lawyer who for 27 years represented both plaintiffs and defendants in disputes including personal injury and medical malpractice. Following his tenure as a trial lawyer, he served as a juvenile and domestic relations judge in Virginia

for a decade, during which time he helped families through the difficult and emotional issues of juvenile crime, child abuse, child custody and visitation. He continues to serve that court on a part-time basis and as a mediator of legal disputes.

His speech began reminiscing about where he started at St. Andrews and recalling the lake: “A quick 53 years and 8 months ago, I sat exactly where you sit this morning. It was September 1965. The occasion was St. Andrews opening convocation. I was a freshman. Our speaker was St. Andrews president, Dr. Ansley Moore, after whom this beautiful and destructive lake is named. That’s a bit odd because Dr. Moore was neither beautiful nor destructive. During his speech Dr. Moore said the following, word for word. ‘Here at St. Andrews, we will not teach you how to make a living...We want to engage you in the harder quest, and that is, how to make a life.’ ” His remarks centered on seniors and their last year on campus having to deal with the devastating impact of Hurricane Florence that changed much of their lives on campus throughout the academic year. His theme of making a life continued:

“

The secret to making a life is not about strategies to avoid pain, or toil, or hard times, but rather overcoming adversity when adversity comes your way—just like you have done. My dear and fellow St. Androids. You have dealt with adversity correctly. Your ticket has been punched and you will go places you could not have gotten to otherwise. Hear this also as your call—a call for you to serve others by building community in all the places you go and with all the people you touch when you leave this special place.

Continue to show us how to make a life.

Following the speech, Dr. Loftus announced all graduates’ names, and President Baldasare with the assistance of Registrar Lyndsey Moss ’13, handed out individual diplomas.

magine the excitement on the staff of A. G. Odell Jr. and Associates when they learned they would be part of a team which included Lewis James

Clarke, to design and build a new college campus on 838 acres of land in Scotland County, North Carolina.

This was a creative opportunity to “transform agricultural and wooded acreage punctuated by a central valley, a cypress pond, and streams” into a barrier free institution of higher learning.

The Charlotte based architectural firm designed the campus allowing for handicapped accessibility, long before the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990. Prior to the adoption of the ADA, the Vocational Rehabilitation Act was passed to address discrimination in an effort to aid persons with physical and mental disabilities. It is believed that St. Andrews was one of the first campuses of its kind in the United States.

The physical setting was beautifully complemented by the professionals of the Lewis James Clarke landscape architecture firm. A quote from a SA college catalog indicated that “leading educational consultants were employed to work with expert architects and landscape architects to translate educational philosophy into modern construction.” College plans “epitomized mid-twentieth century campus design trends” such as grouping buildings by function, arranging dormitories around quadrangles and providing green space.

According to a 2015 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, the GI Bill and disabled veterans helped create a demand for accessibility on college campuses. In August of 1972, my parents and I were greeted by Dr. Ansley Moore, the first President of the school. His personal guided tour highlighted the separation of the academic vs. student life by the lake. The fact that the entire campus was barrier free was noted.

While at St. Andrews, the most important life lesson learned was how to interact with and befriend individuals with physical limitations. There were at least 50 students on campus who were either para or quadriplegic or suffered from a neurological disorder that impacted their mobility on campus St. Andrews’ commitment to providing for students with physical limitation grew with the construction of the Jack Burris Rehabilitation Center in 1974. It was built for students who would be otherwise unable to live on campus.

Sid White

The first wheelchair bound person I met was a senior by the name of Sid White. Sid was heavyset, wore a beard, was an English major and above all was an excellent card player. I don't remember what caused him to lose his ability to walk. I chose not to ask. Sid could often be found in the lounge

of Kings Mountain Dorm (now Pate Hall) eager to play poker or bridge.

All four years at SA I was assigned to work in the “Knight Room” in the athletic building as part of my work study. The Knight Room is gone now but featured pool and ping pong tables, bowling lanes, pin ball machines and early versions of video games—it was a popular place! I met virtually everyone who attended St. Andrews at some point over the course of the year. One of those people was Dwayne Robinson. Dwayne wasn't very tall, had limited mobility but could often be seen riding in his battery powered wheelchair on one of the arm rests—and he liked to play pool. He was also the unofficial manager of the college bowling team. Perhaps it was repeated exposure to people with physical limitations, but over hundreds of interactions, it became second nature to see past the handicaps and see the person.

Students with disabilities had to overcome so much more that physical barriers and I believe it was the collective community of St. Andrews

that provided needed support and allowed them to deal with the mental, emotional and psychological challenges they faced each and every day.

On a recent visit to St. Andrews, I met a young woman from Japan who is paraplegic. Erika Ikeda was lovely, quiet, and self-sufficient. She seemed surprised when I told her that I had many friends who faced physical challenges when I was a student over four decades ago. The campus was designed with her in mind. Erika was the only wheelchair bound student on campus.

A friend who helped students with physical limitations and challenges and had a dramatic impact on the future of SAU was Caroline McNair. Caroline was one of the first people I met on campus. She was a superior equestrian with Olympic aspirations. Over the course of four years, she worked with students with disabilities and taught them to ride horses. Her efforts helped lay the foundation for the college's equestrian program.

My brother Wayne, an ordained Presbyterian Minister, was the commencement speaker at graduation in 2017. He spoke of a “school with spirit and integrity and a student population eager to meet the daily challenges of the world with joy, resilience and humor.”

When on campus, I engage students in conversation whenever I can, and I am never disappointed. There is a special bond between student and alumni. SAU is no longer unique in its efforts to create barrier free environments at institutions of higher learning. But we were champions of accessibility long before it was mandated and remain barrier free. We can be proud of our history.

into an independent living apt. at Clemson Downs in Clemson, SC. She says, “Life is fun and easy.”

with numerous other St. Andrews, Flora Macdonald, and Presbyterian Junior College alums in residence there.

‘67 Carolyn Ebhardt Hackett and

many of the original freshman suite from Albemarle Dorm have been gathering at various homes for over 50 years and plan to have another reunion in October at Sea Island, Georgia. Carolyn says, “We still find that the values that drew us to St. Andrews still bind us together as we share the paths our lives

have led us.” We all commend St. Andrews for helping us develop our skills and values. of 1968 Alums, Ellen ‘68 Class Escott Downey, Robbie Tatum Nash, JoEllen Schild Walling, and Judi Lawson Wallace, recently enjoyed an adventure at Rocky Mountain National Park.

Junod has published a ‘69 Joe book, INK: A Life in Letters,

which recounts the people, places and experiences he encountered during 40+ years in the newspaper business. The book is available on Amazon. He and his wife, Marilyn Greene, left Arlington after 30 years and are now settled in Earlysville, Va., north of Continued on Page 12.....

The Power of Planned G

P

lanned giving is one of the easiest and most impactful ways you can give to St. Andrews. Planned giving refers to gifts made either during the donor’s life or, more commonly, upon the donor’s death, through a will, trust, or a beneficiary designation.

Planned giving allows donors to make gifts they may not be able to make from their ordinary income, which often increases the overall impact of the donation.

St. Andrews has a rich, distinct heritage worth preserving. We continue to be one of the most diverse schools in North Carolina, not just in student makeup but also in the large number of programs available to students. These exceptional programs require financial support from the alumni base.

Planned giving allows alumni to work with the school to develop a gift that reflects your values and allows you to show support to the programs and purchases you believe in. Donors can choose to make a gift to a specific program, such as the general honors program, equestrian program, athletic team, or bagpipe band.

Or, donors can simply choose to give to the school’s general fund.

By far, the most common way to make a planned gift is to leave a percentage of your estate to St. Andrews. Even a gift of 1% of your estate can make a lasting impact. However, if you prefer, you can also give a specific dollar amount in your will. If you want to give a gift to St. Andrews in your will, consider sharing the following language with your estate planning professional: I give, devise, and bequeath ____ % of my gross estate to St. Andrews University, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, North Carolina, 28352 for its general use and purposes.

Or I give, devise, and bequeath the cash sum of $ ____ to St. Andrews University, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, North Carolina, 28352 for its general use and purposes.

If you would prefer the money be used for a specific purpose, simply replace “for its general and purposes” to whatever you want to support. For example, you could designate that the money be added to the general endowment fund, used to purchase new laboratory equipment, provide scholarships to students, or be 10 St. Andrews by the Lake Alumni Magazine

Giving used to support the history department. Donors can even choose to support the buildings and places they enjoyed the most while at St. Andrews, such as the DeTamble Library, Vardell, the Theatre, or Morgan-Jones.

You can also choose to make a gift of something other than cash. Common gifts include gifts of stock, life insurance, real estate, and personal property. If you want your gift to go towards a specific item, program, or interest, I encourage you to reach out to the head of the department you wish to support to discuss their needs. Charlottesville. They have three sons, six grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.

‘70 Anna “Dood” Fletcher Leith and Tommy Carol Holmes Dillard ‘70 celebrated their 70th birthdays together. They were suitemates and roommates at St. Andrews from 1966-1970!

‘71 Edgar A. Porter is mostly

retired in Nashville, but spends some of his time in the family’s Honolulu home during holidays.His time spent in Nashville includes writing some fiction and non-fiction, teaching courses on Asia in a Vanderbilt lifelong learning program, volunteering with a local civil rights organization documenting southern lynchings, and assisting a refugee support group teaching English to adults.

He says, “Here's a photo of my two grandsons and me at a local fishing

hole. Does not get much better than this. I'm the one with the beard and cap.”

Osteopathic Medicine at PCOM Georgia. He served as an Assistant Professor for seven years after a 36 year career in Family Medicine. He says, “Teaching keeps the mind active and working with intelligent young people is just plain fun!

My wife complains that my job is interfering with her retirement, but she remains supportive even after putting up with me for 47 years.”

‘73 Mardi Mountford got divorced

last year after 30+ years, and her only child (Alex) just got married! She says, “Life goes on!”

Sam Watkins and his wife Bev went on two cruises, one on the Amazon River in Brazil which included six Caribbean islands and another one to Tahiti, Bora Bora and several other islands in the South Pacific. This Fall they’re going to Dubai, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Singapore. In the

picture Sam sent us, Bev is holding a dozen roses given to her by Pierce Brosnan (007) for helping his wife Keely promote her new documentary film, Poisoning Paradise, a hard hitting report of the destruction caused by the chemical companies' testing programs on our island.

Jackie Dove-Miller has published her 5th book of poetry, I Wish I'd Known Dr. William Delp has recently been That Then and is formatting the 6th appointed Associate Professor of right now to be published before the

end of 2019. The title is Beauty and Truth. All her books are on Amazon.

Ware shared about a ‘74 John St. Andrews music reunion

in Savannah, GA in June at the home of Bill '75 and Anne '76 McNair. Attending was Anne Acker McNair, Sally Morris '75, Bill McNair, Harcourt Waller '75, John Ware '74, and Anne Robinson Hodges '75. The group performed (played, conducted, sang) several pieces of well-known composer Sally Morris' compositions at First Presby. Church. John said, “What a thrill it was to perform together again! (We all performed in various music ensembles at SAU when we students there) Lots of laughs were had remembering our crazy times at St. Andrews.”

Deborah Drinkard Houghton retired at the end of the school year (June) from a career teaching high school French and German.

Summer Brock officially retired after 30 years in fundraising and alumni affairs at five small private colleges up and down the east coast, including St. Andrews. She spent the last 13 at Barton College (formerly Atlantic Christian College) in Wilson, NC. Jay Xanthos is enjoying retired living

on Lake Lanier in Georgia.

Bob Blumenstein has just released a book of poetry, Journey to the Clear Light, wherein fellow St. Andrews alumni and a St. Andrews professor are memorialized.

Last February Margaret Wilson Hill went on an adventure of a lifetime when she signed on to Kim Powell’s ‘80 Blue Water Ventures trip to Baja.

It was a ten day trip with a group of fifteen that included camping on Espiritu Santo Island, Sea of Cortez, where they snorkeled with sea lions, kayaked, hiked in the canyon, and learned about a variety of sea life. Then it was on to the Baja Whale Camp on the northern region of Magdalena Bay. There they took boats out twice a day where they saw the migrating Grey Whales spy hopping, breaching, and were also able to touch friendly whales when they approached. “Kim leads many other trips and I would go on all of them if I could. It was so much fun reconnecting with Kim and reminiscing about St. Andrews.

Kim is a wealth of knowledge and a true environmentalist not to mention a wonderful teacher. This is a top notch organization and I highly

recommend going on any of her adventures.”

Knight Chamberlain started a ‘78 new job in April driving elderly and wheelchair-bound seniors back and forth to adult day care in Asheville.

Knight says, “It is a real honor and privilege to do this work, and I have become very fond of the participants and their caregivers. Way back in my freshman year in the fall of 1974, Rodger Decker hired me to drive the ‘wheelies.’ He trusted me with my precious cargo, and I’m proud to say I never let him down. Even though it has been 41 years since I graduated, I credit St. Andrews for preparing me for this particular work at this particular time in my life. It is humbling and extremely gratifying.”

where he provides Career and Leadership coaching and training to executive-level MBA students. He says, “Looking forward to visiting campus again and watching the Knights win a bunch of football games!”

Dr. Michelle Taylor Skipper was recently inducted as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She is the only nurse practitioner in the Scotland County area with this credential.

Carter was offered ‘80 Christopher the chance to play one of the

principal roles in the Lost Colony this summer. Christopher says, “I was in the show as a child when my father was Father Martin and again in college as an actor tech in 1977. This year I play Father Martin exactly 50 years later than my father. Six nights a week for 73 shows makes it a job but lots of fun and memories. Gail Hutchison ’83 helped me line up the gig. Here is a photo of me ready for one of the many late-night parties and back stage at the theater in costume.”

Faulkner is happy to share ‘85 Bill that he is glad to be back in NC

after living in South Florida for the past 10 years. He currently works at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC Chapel Hill

Dale Riddell Spielman has accepted the position of Director for Nursing Education at a local community college. He says, “My gang is growing up fast: the oldest, Ben, has graduated from the United States Naval Academy and is engaged to another naval office (our beautiful Shae); #2, Hannah, is starting nursing school at the University of Maryland in a few weeks; #3, Rachael, is a high school senior and figuring out what is next for her; #4, Jacob, is starting his sophomore year in high school and is officially the tallest of all of them.”

Pam Whitfield was ‘91 Dr. invited to judge at the Japan

Horse Festival in June. She met members of the JEF who will be working at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and learned how equestrian sports flourish in an island nation.

She works in the horse industry in Minnesota as a judge and riding instructor, but her vocation is English professor at a college in Rochester, MN. Wolfe Cirino and her ‘93 Cayce husband have been back in

the States for two years now, specifically Northville, Michigan.

They spent the previous six years in China, Singapore and Germany.

She says, “We hope to stay put for awhile, but we still love to travel.

It’s nice to show our daughters our own country for a change. I have had one travel article published and am hoping to have more of my work printed.

My daughters are already nine and eleven. They are into math, science and robotics…clearly they take after their dad, who works in the automotive industry. I hope we can make it to an alumni weekend soon, as I would love to show my girls SA’s beautiful campus.”

Tarrah Trent got married in ‘98 March 2018 to Nathan Jones.Tarrah is following the path of her SA mentor, Edna Ann Loftus and teaching high school English and getting young people to love Shakespeare while also coaching

volleyball at New Life Academy in Fayetteville, NC. She is proud to continue to support the Knights family and recently took her volleyball players to a SA clinic and loves witnessing the community rally around the school and the community after the hurricane.

Kathleen Wright McNeill is beginning her 10th year with Harnett County Schools as a Guidance Counselor at Benhaven Elementary School.

Craig Shively and his wife Mariann Stark ‘11 were married in April and have moved to Durham, North Carolina. She is the operations manager for M&M Tack Shop in Cary, and he recently started a position with First Citizens Bank as a financial advisor.

Patton currently live in ‘12 Sharon Las Vegas, NV and is on the chair

for the ClexaCon film festival for 2020.

She is in charge of submissions and screenings from the South East United States (If anyone is interested you can find all of the info at ClexaCon.com).

She is also in the process of creating a webseries and will begin shooting in NC in December with a fellow Alumni. She says, “I truly feel that I would not be doing something that I love so much without the influence of St. Andrews and without amazing professors such as Stephanie and Chris McDavid. I am so grateful to have had a place that cared about me and helped me find who I am.”

Thomson has fulfilled her ‘16 Mary dream by becoming the head trainer at Maple Leaf Stables, a riding facility opened in the spring of 2018 by Mary and her mother offering boarding, training and riding lessons. Maple Leaf Stables was recently featured in an article on the Lancaster News webpage.

On July 3, 2019 Mark Mowbray graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy after six months of training.

While at the academy, Trooper Mowbray was elected to be the class president by his fellow classmates. He is currently assigned to the Berlin Barrack.

Cluck is currently at ‘18 Zoe $830,000 in sales for Hawthorne Residential Partners as a leasing consultant and is well on her way to $1M after working there for a little over a year.

She says, “I lease apartment homes and am working towards a promotion! I hope everything is well at St. Andies :) I miss all the faculty, staff, and of course the horses!”

Ride Like A Knight Therapeutic Horsemanship Program The Ride Like A Knight Therapeutic Horsemanship Program is looking for volunteers for the Fall Semester 2019. You do not have to be a St. Andrews student or have experience with horses to participate.

Training is offered to those who want to help. If you are looking to donate your time to a good cause, this is definitely worth it!
