CEO’s Year in Review

2023 shines brightly in our memories as a year of ambition, energy and excitement. The year started with a wonderful 100% matric pass rate, excellent Bachelor's passes and distinctions. Our newest dentist and doctor started working, and as always we were grateful that we are able to nurture talent from the age of four until 23, when our learners enter the world of work as contributing adults in a fragile society.

Our character-based and career-focused model continues to build graduates who achieve upward economic mobility, demonstrate good citizenship, and become empowered to identify and realise their goals, dreams, and human potential. Our strategic focus on agency and higher order thinking has enabled us to thrive, and we have seen tremendous success in our learners' results and self-efficacy.

This year robotics, e-sports, droning and gaming teams thrived and we were so proud of our high schoolers who won an app-building competition for their region. Sports was back on the agenda with netball, soccer and athletics back on the fields. Our Junior School hosted a knock-out Eisteddfod, inviting our five Simunye schools from across the wealth divide to participate.

We were very proud of our broader community activities including our parents who started a Walking Bus, collecting our children at bus drop-off points to walk

them home. On the other end of the age spectrum, our alumni participated in our successful MoneyMoves4Me workshop which addresses financial literacy and wealth creation.

Youth Bridge, our youth unemployment programme, launched with astoundingly positive indicators of success. After four courses, we have reached 93 unemployed youth, 71% of whom are in gainful employment today. This is an impressive statistic and a taste of the success our model has, and we look forward to expanding significantly in the next 24 months.

In closing, we remain committed to expanding Christel House with another school and our first sights are set on building a second high school on our current premises in Ottery. With the critical shortage of high schools in the Western Cape, we are determined to contribute meaningfully to addressing this shortage. With your invaluable support, we are confident in our ability to successfully address this pressing need.

We remain grateful to all our donors, volunteers and supporters who make all of this possible. Together, let us pave the way for a brighter future for our community and beyond. Thank you.

Adri

Chair Report

The quite remarkable lifeforce that was Christel DeHaan, dared to dream. Christel dreamt of building successful, effective and impactful schools in areas of the world that most needed them, leveraging the power of education to break the cycle of poverty.

Christel also laid out a challenge to all of us following in her mighty footsteps: could we too dream so that we can dare to create more chances and opportunities?

Christel House SA has again closed out a remarkable year with a 100% matric pass rate, and an 82% Bachelor’s pass rate. Our magnificent teachers and students create this success rate pretty much every year. Impressive in the context of most other schools in South Africa? Absolutely.

But it’s no longer a dream. It’s simply our expectation. Christel would not appreciate us sitting back and being content with doing next year what we did last year, and the year before.

The sad reality is that our country is massively short of quality education. The most recent estimate from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is that just in the Cape, we need to build an average of 17 new schools every year to keep pace with the demand for quality education.

So we are dreaming again. We are daring to believe that Christel House can create a bigger, broader, wider

impact on the lives of South Africans by building more schools and by creating more programmes in those schools to impact a wider population.

Do you dare come and join us on this journey? Join our dream of building many more Christel House schools in South Africa? If you are up for the challenge and want to be part of changing the lives and opportunities of our young people, then you know what to do. Contact us.

Dare you?

Students aim for the stars

Our Class of 2023 has excelled with the support of our dedicated staff. Amidst the success stories, our top student and class of 2023 Valedictorian, Zia-UdDin G. from Hanover Park, achieved six academic distinctions. He will be studying towards a MBChB – Medicine at Stellenbosch University. Zia-Ud-Din draws inspiration from his family members, including his brother, Mujaahid G., an esteemed alumnus who has successfully attained the status of a qualified dentist. Zia-Ud-Din says, “I believe if you are doing something not just for yourself but to make those who care about you proud, there is no way you won’t succeed. I’m proud of myself and would like to thank my family at home and my Christel House family for supporting me.”

Khanya N. from Langa is in second place with six academic distinctions. She will be studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Management Science at Stellenbosch University. Organisational Highlights

Celebrating student life on International Mandela Day

Every year, on International Mandela Day (18 July), we invite donors to our campus to spend their 67 minutes giving back to our school. This year, our event had a Student Life focus, whereby donors joined us for a day of sports, arts and music. More than 80 supporters and donors joined to give time and attention to our little ones by playing, painting and drumming together. A donation component bolstered our athletic pursuits, motivating corporates and their staff to contribute to acquiring our students' sports equipment. An incredible amount of over R56 000 was raised for the campaign.

Ready, set, go! Virtual Fitness Challenge success

Our second annual Virtual Fitness Challenge took place this year from 1–30 September and invited participants to walk, run or cycle and raise funds to support our students. Over R230 000 was raised for the campaign, and 100% of the funds raised went towards our feeding programme. Corporates were excited to promote the challenge as a wellness activity within their organisation. A special thank you to innovative technology company Smollan (presenting sponsor) and supply chain solutions company CHEP (senior phase sponsor) for supporting our Virtual Fitness Challenge.

2023 Special Assembly –Africa is the future

This year’s Special Assembly event celebrated the rich tapestry of contemporary Africa. It included exceptional musical performances by talented students and alumni, a captivating theatre showcase, an art exhibition, and a holographic experience. Howls of laughter could be heard when our Grade 1s performed a “TV Talkshow” to celebrate our retiring Chief Financial Officer at Christel House International, Joe Schneider. Many of our donors, partners and friends attended and left in awe of our Christel House magic.

Buckets of Hope

Once again, our donors and supporters helped us to provide every household with a “Bucket of Hope” – filled with nutritious, non-perishable items to buffer the long school holiday. Over R350 000 was raised, ensuring our 840 students received a Bucket of Hope. The additional funds raised went towards our most vulnerable alumni. We want to thank every individual and organisation for donating, volunteering, or sharing this campaign with friends or family.

School Highlights

A Microsoft Showcase School for six years running

Our school is a Microsoft Showcase school for the 6th consecutive year. We are the only Microsoft Showcase School in the Western Cape and one of only five showcase schools in South Africa. Approximately 80% of our teaching staff has achieved the Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE) certification status. This empowers our educators with the global educator technology literacy competencies needed to provide a rich, custom learning experience for students.

App building competition

Following their victory at the provincial App Building Competition 2022, our App Development Group has been chosen to represent South Africa in the prestigious Global IT Innovator Final App Challenge. This remarkable achievement is a testament to our students’ talent, dedication, and innovation. Being selected as representatives of our country on the global stage is a tremendous honour and a validation of the hard work our App Development Group has put into their projects. We eagerly anticipate their participation in the Global IT Innovator Final App Challenge.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Through establishing a Drama Club with actors ranging from six to 18 years old, we submitted an entry into the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Regular auditions and workshops were held to help prepare our students for the festival. The Christel House SA drama teams performed Macbeth this year at the Star Theatre (District Six Homecoming Centre). Our performers were so good that we were asked to write a “Shakespeare musical” for 2024.

National Coding Week outreach

During National Coding week in September, we welcomed Parkwood Primary School for a memorable day focused on mathematics, coding, and robotics. Students from Parkwood Primary enjoyed using our facilities and guidance from our teachers. Christel House SA students also played a crucial role in demonstrating the use of online programmes to their peers. This event not only allowed our students to share their passion for technology but also provided an opportunity for them to give back to the community. We are so grateful to Parkwood Primary for joining us.

e-Sports – Gaming competition

Our e-Sports team participated in the Minecraft e-Sports Competition at Comic-Con. The team performed admirably and secured an impressive fifth place in the competition, sparking great excitement amongst the school community.

RCI sponsors excursions and festive gifts

One of our long-time donors, RCI, sponsored an unforgettable week away for our Grade 3 students at Club Mykonos in Langebaan. It was a week filled with laughter, soaking up the sun and relaxation. RCI also sponsored festive gifts for ALL of our students. Thank you to RCI.

Lighting up our Community

Our parents

Promoting agency has been critical to our work in Social Services, including our work with our parents. We have streamlined parental engagement, providing greater opportunities to earn points, thus enabling agency and choice. Our Parent Committee remains incredibly driven and has assisted in streamlining the department’s administration, ensuring equitable volunteering opportunities and scheduling parent volunteers by catchment area. Further, participation in volunteer and administrative functions has created meaningful skills transfer, building parent employability skills. We held a parent appreciation event at the end of 2023, which recognised and celebrated the incredible achievements of the parents in our Sebenza Sonke programme. The Sebenza Sonke points are a tangible measure of the impact parents make.

The Walking Bus

This year we continued our whole child support by introducing our “Walking Bus” – where parents volunteer to collect our children when they get off the buses in the afternoon. The children are then walked home in groups to ensure their safety. We are proud that our parents made this initiative a reality.

Our Ground Staff

Our dedicated staff forms the backbone of our institution. Among them are passionate educators who engage with our students daily, guiding them through their educational journey with care and expertise. Yet, integral to our operations are also those who work tirelessly behind the scenes, handling maintenance and operational tasks that ensure the smooth functioning of our school. These are some of their stories.

Stephen Martin

Stephen has worked at Christel House SA for four years. He resides in Hanover Park, one of the communities we serve, along with his spouse and three children. Orphaned at a young age, Stephen found support from his older sister, who became his guardian. Before joining Christel House, he worked at a garden nursery. His true passion lies in electrical work, a field he explored while assisting an electrician. Stephen’s dream is to become a licensed electrician. He finds fulfilment at work in witnessing the opportunities Christel House provides to students. Stephen says, “Seeing what Christel House offers students is amazing. I love seeing students flourish and hearing them sing in the morning as I’m working.”

Nomsa Jacobs

Nomsa started working at Christel House in 2017 as a bus conductor. She lives in Freedom Park and has

two sons, one of whom is a Grade 1 student at Christel House SA. She currently works with our Supply Chain Manager, helping with various operational tasks and still helps as a bus conductor as needed. Nomsa exudes Christel House love. She says, “I am still at Christel House today because of the love and respect that is here. In the community I live in, there’s always fighting because of gangsterism but at Christel House, I have peace and I am surrounded by love.” Nomsa holds a deep affection for the children at Christel House. She dreams of completing Grade 12 and expresses profound gratitude towards our organisation for the opportunities it has afforded both her and her family.

All of our staff members are dedicated to our mission and we thank each of them.

Celebrating the life of Mr. Brian Fisher

We pay our respects to one of our beloved teachers, Mr. Brian Fisher, who passed away. He touched the lives of so many with his wisdom, kindness, and passion for teaching. Rest in peace, dear Mr. Fisher.

Looking to a Brighter Future

Money Moves4Me

In September 2023, our College and Careers team launched and hosted a Money Moves4Me Wealth Creation Expo for our Christel House learners, alumni and Youth Bridge participants. The expo was attended by nearly 400 participants and aimed to strengthen our financial literacy and wealth creation delivery. Our College and Careers team invited various financial institutions and entrepreneurs to address key concepts around financial literacy, including saving, investing, and managing funds over the short and long term.

Watch the video here:

https://bit.ly/48OGMVp

Entrepreneurship

As we develop our learners’ growth mindset, we have encouraged them to be open to opportunities and develop and expand their capabilities. It’s about developing the mindset of an entrepreneur, whether you become one or not. We have exposed learners to entrepreneurs during the Career Weeks over the last two years and took them on learning journeys to the community to see entrepreneurship in action. We are slowly transitioning our onsite hairdressing salon, run by “Intercoiffure”, to be run by learners. Additional certifications to complement school certifications are important at Christel House. We have partnered with Intercoiffure for over ten years to enable interested learners to learn the skill of hairdressing.

Real-world interview experience

Human Resource professionals and senior management from top South African businesses conducted mock job interviews with our Grade 12 students during our annual flagship Speed Interview event. The event pairs an experienced interviewer with a Grade 12 student to help prepare students for the real-world interview experience. It is also a prime opportunity for businesses to scout the best and brightest young talent. Before the event, Estée Lauder Companies South Africa, Edgars/ Retailability and Nandos South Africa sponsored an image consulting workshop and professional clothing.

Our Graduates

Rafeeqah Blommetjie (Class of 2019) Laboratory Assistant

Gangsterism, substance abuse and poverty are rife in Delft, the area where Christel House graduate Rafeeqah grew up. However, she didn’t let her circumstances hold her back. Instead, she used it as motivation to create a better life for herself and her family. Rafeeqah currently works at one of the country’s leading pathology companies as a qualified laboratory assistant and plans to further her studies and become a clinical laboratory technician.

Rafeeqah says it is a huge honour to be a Christel House graduate. “Christel House was our second home. Our safe haven. My school always made opportunities available to us, and we learned so many important life lessons and leadership skills that we now implement daily,” comments Rafeeqah. She thanks the educators for instilling strong character values in her and says they are the real superheroes. She also thanks our Career Development team for their assistance in providing study and career support. Finally, she thanks the late Ms Christel DeHaan with the message, “We will always love you and your legacy will always live on.”

Likhanyise Sigam (Class of 2019)

IT Senior Service Desk Analyst

Likhanyise’s journey exemplifies the age-old wisdom: when you stumble, rise again and forge ahead. Growing up in the challenging environment of Delft posed numerous obstacles, yet he found solace in the unwavering support of his mother and his Christel House community. He says that 2018 was a year of profound impact, marked by a guest speaker’s visit. The speaker shared his struggles with drug addiction and his triumphant journey to recovery. “I was going through a lot of things that year and was very close to making a bad decision that could have negatively affected my life. I ended up taking a better path because of that speech at school,” says Likhanyise.

It was during his high school years that his fascination with IT ignited. Despite facing rejection from universities when applying for IT courses, Likhanyise found a lifeline through our Career Development programme. Through a learnership in System Support at On The Ball College, he secured a foothold in the IT industry. Today, Likhanyise thrives as a seasoned IT Senior Service Desk Analyst at an IT and Cybersecurity company.

Nontando Fani (Class of 2009) Entrepreneur

After Nontando Fani matriculated from our school, she completed a qualification in Chemical Engineering and then in Quality Management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Nontando launched into a career as an Environmental Specialist and today, she runs a design, fabrication and installation company.

Before joining our school, she was a below-average student and she was very shy. She lived with her family in a one-room shack in Langa. Nontando joined Christel House SA in 2002 and could not speak English. In 2009, she matriculated as the first valedictorian of Christel House SA.

Tragically, Nontando’s mother passed away while she was at university. Reflecting on this difficult period, she acknowledges the invaluable support of Christel House staff. She particularly remembers Ms. Carmen, a primary school teacher who provided essential care and assistance. She comments, “I do not think I could have gone through that period of my life without the support of Christel House staff who had become surrogate mothers for me.”

Widening our Impact

Youth Bridge: a guiding light for unemployed youth

In 2022, Christel House SA launched our Youth Bridge programme in response to the growing youth unemployment crisis. Youth Bridge has the mission of helping unemployed youth find gainful employment. The programme assists youth aged 18 – 36 committed to entering employment by providing in-depth character and career support and placement through an intensive six-month programme (including a six-week onsite training programme followed by four and a half months of longitudinal mentoring). Youth Bridge is more than a job readiness programme or a job placement initiative. Youth Bridge glues together

ambition, worth and identity with the outcome of social capital and access to networks, opening opportunities where they did not exist before. To date, we have completed four Youth Bridge programmes in Freedom Park, Langa and two in Khayelitsha. We are proud to share our 71% average placement rate across the first four programmes and an incredible 84% success rate for the Langa programme specifically.

Simunye (We are One)

In October, we celebrated our fourth annual Derby Day event. This event is integral to the Simunye (We Are One) project, a groundbreaking collaboration between five schools across the wealth divide, enabled by the Julius Baer Foundation. Derby Day is a collaborative event that encourages team building and bonding among all the Simunye schools through carefully designed activities. Participating schools included our school, Die Duine Primary School, Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School, Mzamomtsha Primary, and St Cyprian’s School. This year, parents also attended and participated in wealth inequality workshops. Through Simunye, we are creating conversations and spaces for youth to connect. The aim is to nurture lasting relationships amongst youth from different ends of the wealth spectrum. We want our youth to thrive in crosscultural environments in the workplace and create opportunities for themselves and their peers.

Eisteddfod time!

Christel House participated in the Eisteddfod held at Stellenbosch University, where our jazz band earned a double gold. Christel House SA also hosted an Eisteddfod in partnership with the Simunye schools as part of the Simunye programme. Professional judges and coaches were sourced. Further on in the day, there were masterclasses and a combined school performance. Certificates were awarded to all band, choir, dance and drama participants.

Expansion

We are expanding

On a global level, expanding the number of Christel House institutions both in current and new countries is a strategic priority. The Christel House model has been proven to be a compelling, unique, and impactful value proposition that effectively breaks the cycle of poverty

Christel House SA is expanding to meet the growing need for educational equity in South Africa. Our aim is to grow by three institutions in the next five years.

1. Expanding through the construction of a new high school on our existing property

2. Building a comprehensive school at another location in Cape Town

3. Building a school in different province based on the needs of the communities and engagement with partners.

The power of partnerships

The expansion project will require collaboration and support from partners and our entire Christel House SA community. Through their collaborative, strategic and financial power, parnerships enable us to achieve much more.

Why partner with Christel House in our expansion strategy

• Long-term sustainable impact and mission alignment

• Cobranding and recognition as an agent of educational change

• Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG)

• Trust, education and community development

• Brand visibility and positive association

• Collaborative innovation and employee engagement

• Strategic networking opportunities

• Governance and leadership

Partnering with Christel House for our expansion strategy offers organisations the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of South Africa’s communities while aligning with their corporate values and strategic goals.

To get involved, contact our Executive: Fundraising and Marketing, Keri Francis at 021 704 9407, or kfrancis@sa.christelhouse.org

As we seek funding for expansion, we invite corporations, foundations, and government entities to consider the indelible power of partnerships in advancing the mission of Christel House. Working together can create a brighter future for more children and families in need. Together, we can create a more equitable future and empower the next generation to reach their full potential.
