Nomfundo Andile Khumalo founded Mami’s Kitchen in 2018, a food service providing all your catering needs The Clermont-born cook has built a successful and growing business in Clermont, providing delicious meals like bunny chows and catering for events and functions

This is applaudable because coming from the township, she was more exposed to substances, drugs, alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and other social ills, but she managed to persevere and build a successful business A shining beacon of hope in her community

Growing up a cook

Nomfundo is the firstborn, so she was responsible for cooking at home “I loved cooking and baking because our granny was always on my side teaching me new things every day, we had a cookie jar for a 4pm tea time at home” she explains

Food was a part of the culture at home and that is where it all began, a growing passion for food Soon she was cooking the family Christmas lunch for everyone at home, we all know only the best cooks are allowed to cook at Christmas

Although she ventured into other industries in sales and other jobs, she knew that cooking is the ultimate happy place for her So she left everything and built Mamis kitchen in 2018, which began as a container to the success it is now.

“I called up my friends in the business to start a Social Cohesion platform that was called the Gathering It began at home with local brands being sold in my yard, cocktails, food, music and mamis kitchen used to specialise on the famous bunny chow” says Mami The kitchen has caught the eye of many influential people and celebrities

Starting my business

The day the business was launched, Nomfundo knew it was the correct thing to do. “It was not glamorous, but it puts food on the table and I love it”, she says Beginning was a significant milestone
