Greetings from Joy...

Welcome to the autumn edition of Hodgkins Happenings.

It was lovely to meet so many families over the holiday period as they visited and spent some time with our residents.

We also welcomed new residents and new staff and two have shared their story with us in this newsletter that I am sure you will enjoy reading.

In December, student nurses Ash Hall and Natasha Cairns graduated. Ash is now working at our sister village, Yvette Williams, and Natasha is working at Dunedin Hospital. We wish them well on their journey.

It has been a lovely summer and it was great to have our annual Children's Party outdoors and soak up the summer sun.

The Ryman Season of The Nutcracker The Royal New Zealand Ballet is hard at work to bring the new production of the muchloved Christmas classic, The Nutcracker, to New Zealand’s stages. The Ryman Healthcare Season of The Nutcracker will be the RNZB’s biggest tour of 2018, opening in Wellington on 31 October and touring the rest of the country. For our annual Children’s Party, we invited the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of residents and staff to the village. Summer managed to stick around and it was a fantastic day for our party.

Children and adults alike enjoyed rides in the little ďŹ re engine, were fascinated by the skills of Jonathan the magician and found the latest police puppy dog in training adorable. Face painting is always popular and proved to be again on the day.

Among all the wonderful activities, the kitchen team provided delicious food and the children got a treat with the lolly scramble.

<generic recipe> Bob Scott bowlers take on Melbourne While most of us were sleeping off our Christmas feasts on Boxing Day, four residents from Bob Scott Retirement Village were heading to Melbourne.

The winners of the Ryman lower North Island regional bowls tournament, Arie Molenaar, Shirley Wilson, Ron Scott and Reta Morris, were eager to take on Australian bowlers in the Glen Waverley Bowls Carnival.

“The atmosphere was brilliant. There was a lot of interest in us and people asking how we were doing,” Arie says.

The team also enjoyed their visit to Ryman’s first Melbourne village, the Weary Dunlop Retirement Village, where they had a tour and morning tea with the residents.

“Sometimes we’re there for half an hour and we don’t play bowls we just talk!”

They all agree that it is the best thing to have a bowling green in a village as it brings people together.

They all give a very big thank you to Ryman and Denise Thompson, Ryman community and relations team leader, and Russ Nicholls, from the Glen Waverley Bowls Club.

Cashin Scholarship Winner 2018 Emma Glasson is all set to pursue her dream career after winning the $5,000 Cashin Scholarship.

The 18-year-old from Invercargill has started her first year studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and she says the scholarship has eased the pressure on her family.

Emma’s mum Deanna is a senior caregiver at Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill and started there in 2012 after the family moved south from Christchurch.

Emma says the earthquakes were tough on the family.

“The earthquakes took a toll on us all and mum and dad decided that Invercargill would be a good place to move to.’’

Emma is the seventh winner of the scholarship established in honour of

Ryman director Mike Cashin.

Blair Cashin, Mike’s son, said Emma was a deserving winner.

“We were delighted to support Emma’s ambitions to study accountancy.

She’s part of a family whose lives were disrupted by the earthquakes but she is a determined character who has done well at school through her hard work.’’

The scholarship is open to all Ryman staff and their families.

Ryman Healthcare is proud to be partnering with Child Cancer Foundation in the Haier Big Hoot.

From 3 March till 6 May, 47 owl sculptures decorated by New Zealand and international artists will be displayed across Auckland. One of these owls has been sponsored by Ryman Healthcare.

There will also be 60 owlets mostly decorated by children on display.

Auckland sculptor Jeff Thomson has created the Ryman owl, which has landed at a location in Birkenhead. Jeff’s Tin Owl is made from corrugated iron and is quite striking against the other painted fibreglass owls.

The elves are coming

Last year the festive season proved to be jolly indeed as a group of elves visited the village.

The elves, from Fairfield Play and Lea rn, sang us songs and greeted each and eve ry resident.

It was a lovely visit and we are cer tainly looking forward to seeing them again.

Introducing Bronwyn Leishman Hello, my name is Bronwyn Leishman and I am an activities coordinator at Frances Hodgkins. I was born and bred in Dunedin and in my opinion, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

I have been married to Stan for 30 years and we have two adult sons, Max and Ted. I am also a mum to three dogs, Pippi, Lewis and Jeffrey, and one cat, Gordon.

When I am not at work, I like to be creative. I have an extensive girlcave at home, where I make and create more often than I should!

I have worked as a nurse aide in several aged care establishments, was an enrolled nurse at Dunedin Hospital, at Cherry Farm Hospital and at the NZ Blood Service.

I worked as a nanny in New York and London and while my sons were small, I did home based child care. For the last 13 years I was self-employed as a massage therapist.

I feel so privileged that I have found a job where I can use my caring experience and creative skills.

My dad lives in the resthome here and I have been so happy with the care he has received. I am pleased to be part of this great team!

y e n r e B d e T Meet My name is Ted Berney and I moved into my new home at Frances Hodgkins in October last year.

I was born in Roxburgh but moved around the country as my father was with the Ministry of Works building the railways. I attended Ministry of Works schools as we moved and came back to Dunedin to attend Kings High School.

After school I served with the Armed forces. I packed camouflage packs for the

I then worked for the Post Office – I would deliver the mail daily to Taiaroa Heads lighthouse then onto Portobello and Hoopers Inlet. Whilst I was a postman I became known to all the local children as they knew I would post their letters onto their grandparents. I still know some of those children today, one has become a well-known surgeon and another a QC. I was often invited in for a family lunch whilst doing deliveries.

My most hair-raising experience was in the 1960s when I collected, from the postal box, a parcel bomb that was later delivered and caused the death of a Dunedin solicitor.

I was also lucky enough to travel around the world catching up with relatives in England and New Caledonia.

I am now enjoying my time at Frances Hodgkins. I loved celebrating my 90th birthday here in January and I look forward to many more birthdays!

Shortbread The Ralph Family Recipe Makes approx 30 pieces Ingredients: 250g butter 3/4 cup caster sugar 1/2 cup cornflower

2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt

Method: • Cream butter and sugar well.

• Add sifted flour, cornflour and salt.

• Knead well, roll out fairly thick (1cm).

• Cut into pieces, place on cold greased tray and prick with a fork.

• Bake for 15-18 minutes 180°C. • Leave to cool.

Celebrations We have had a lot to celebrate at Frances Hodgkins. Nona Sutherland celebrated her 15th anniversary with Ryman and Frances Hodgkins. Nona has been a fantastic team member and kitchen assistant, and the staff can attest to the fact that she bakes amazing sponge cakes. We also celebrated with student nurses Ash Hall and Natasha Cairns who both graduated. They have moved on from Frances Hodgkins but we wish them well. Congratulations Nona, Ash and Natasha!
