One thread running through this issue is passion. When we visited the garden featured in this issue, we were awed by the homeowners’ sheer passion and devotion to every plant they tend to daily. We titled the story “True Love in the Garden” because their abundance of love for plants and gardening is evident in this extravagant visual and aromatic feast. We feel similarly with the “My Favorite Room” section, where we feature four designers who have created exceptional spaces with color, purposeful forms, and textures. In a counterbalance to nature, we feature a high-tech home on the Potomac in which the homeowner’s passion for technology is displayed in devices that turn on and off at his verbal command.

This planting pocket is filled to the brim with “ice flowers” named for their bright white centers that look like drops of ice. This perennial groundcover closes its flowers at cocktail hour, according to one highly reputable source.

n the dark days of the pandemic, a French-inspired garden in Northwest Washington, D.C., grew slowly but surely toward the light. Finished just last year and composed of three tiers, the garden of Eric Michael and Craig Kruger is of singular beauty, each plant linked to travel, a moment in time, a special memory, a dream. One-hundred-fifty rose bushes on the property and over 70 different types of flowers blossom profusely, providing color and intrigue through their lifecycle, thanks to a collaboration between the homeowners and Jay Graham of Moody Graham Landscape Architecture.

Michael, a former catering magnate, and Kruger, a professional chef, had many gardening problems for Graham to tackle. Their new striking classic shingle-style home overlooking the Potomac in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington, D.C. was designed by Barnes Vanze Architects. The stately residence, which replaced an old farmhouse, already had a mature woodland garden. Kruger and Michael created a Zen garden with a Koi pond. However, the backyard was another story. With a dead oak tree in the middle, tiki bar, kidney-shaped pool and bandstand, change was long overdue. As highly experienced gardeners, they knew exactly what to grow but needed a coherent design plan to support their ambitious vision.

“We collaborated. What you have is a true gardener’s garden,” explains Graham. “It’s highly unusual. Usually, we present a plan and propose all the plantings. Not in their case. They are adventurous. They love plants, and they love gardening and knew what they wanted. We created a framework; they chose the plants.”

Highlights include brilliant yellow oleander from their home in the Caribbean, raised from shoots braided by Michael to form a beautiful trunk. There is a myrtle-leaved orange tree, Citrus myrtifolia. The rind of this fruit flavors a soda by San Pellegrino called Chinotto, explains

Kruger, who found the plant growing beside a castle in the South of France. Their citrus collection includes orange and lemon trees as well as the rare Australian Finger Lime. Called “citrus caviar,” its lime-flavored pulp pops on the tongue.

The hardscape is integral to the garden’s design, as carefully considered as the plants. The homeowners welcomed structure but did not want their garden to be overwhelmed by stone. “It’s formal, but it feels kind of organic; getting the right material was important,” notes Michael. “We didn’t want it to feel like a courthouse.”

There is splendor in the hardscape and throughout this garden. Kruger has almost every flower he ever wanted. “You ask which flowers we have to have… the question is, really, which ones can’t we have.” Michael cannot name a favorite flower but admits, “Roses and peonies, we had to have them.” Their answers reveal an insatiable thirst for beauty, a need to simply work the ground and watch things grow.

With the plantings taken care of, Graham put his design skills to work, siting the garden prominently on the central axis of the house. As the lines of the house extend into the garden, it becomes, in a sense, another living space with garden rooms offering respite and delight. From the outset, there were “design opportunities,” notes Graham politely. They included poor drainage, a deteriorating wood wall, inadequate access to the garage, no clear space for entertaining, and a lack of focus.

The wall and generous steps define the garden and solve the drainage problem. The stone for the garden wall matches the stone found on the home’s facade and was quarried five miles from the project. A sculpture by New York artist Donald Baechler offers a focal point and is situated “to hold the middle distance and the strong east-west axis from the house to the upper garden greenhouse,” explains Graham.

Inspired by the elaborate shingle-style architecture of the house, the garden’s vertical tiers provide focus. Each level has its own color scheme. “It is more saturated the higher you go. The lower level is white and chartreuse, the middle level has oranges and reds, and yellows and purples are on the top level,” explains Michael.

In Graham’s design, the hardscape and granite steps are living forms that change with each season. Meticulously installed by Oldetowne, the steps are joyful movements in this garden’s choreography, with subtle planting pockets. “Pockets of soil are tucked into unlikely places to offer moments of joy, texture, and exploration,” says Graham. “The vertical layers of structure express themselves then disappear during the cycles of the seasons as spring bulbs appear, perennials rise, roses bloom, colors fade, and the evergreen backdrop resumes importance.”

Graham thinks about gardens almost as if they are living friends, helpful friends. He shares a favorite quote by the seminal landscape

Graham calls his project “A Gardener’s Garden.” This large house garden, conceived by expert gardeners, is performing its Thomas Church-defined duties—if not exactly solving personal problems, it certainly pleases the eye and lifts the spirits. Well-fed and watered, with cycles of activity and rest, it seems to behave in an almost human fashion. Or is it the other way around? Perhaps the garden thinks its owners are functioning nicely, visiting often, and assisting with its problems. If this is the case, Graham may want to re-title his project “A Garden’s Personal Gardeners.”

Clearly, for Michael and Kruger, gardens are essential to daily life. You might even say that the world is their garden and that their garden holds a world. To stroll its winding paths, abuzz with dragonflies and bees, is to stroll not only through their imagination but through a vigorous ecosystem with inhabitants of its own. Some are not exactly welcome. Michael recalls how he watched his small grapevine, planted in a pocket on the third tier, twine beautifully and thrive, producing succulent grape clusters. Just before harvest, disaster struck: “An animal attacked the grapes, ate the inside and spit the seeds out. I came out to skins and grape seeds scattered all over the place.”

There is never a dull moment in this garden. When he is not mourning his lost grapes or feeding the Koi in the adjacent Zen garden, Michael may be found tending to his orchids in his greenhouse equipped with a radiant heat floor. Covered in vines and flowers blooming overhead, it is just steps away from the main garden. Inside are fifteen types of Vanda orchids, many hanging from the ceiling in pots. Long stems and extravagant blossom clusters shoot out at the ceiling, walls, floors, and visitors—as if gesturing in heated conversations.

I’ve always loved the juxtaposition of modern furniture against a traditional backdrop, and this client gave me the freedom to play in that arena. Here we added traditional millwork to their 10-foot ceilings and painted the room a bright white to create the perfect canvas. I had a Parsons table made by a local woodworker to ground this space and to highlight the chairs covered in an unexpected French blue velvet with black piping. The simplicity of these pieces then shows off the undulating black metal chandelier. I adore this space so much because when you walk by this room, you feel so starstruck by so many quiet pieces that speak volumes to you.

I love that this family of seven uses the entire kitchen and breakfast room for multiple functions, not just for gathering at mealtimes. I repurposed the banquette and Vaughan chandelier from their previous home, which I also designed, into their new breakfast room, where the green accents blend beautifully with the hues in the kitchen. The kitchen’s counter stools in Thibaut fabric and Roman shades featuring Kravet fabric and Romo trim complement the two blue islands and white cabinetry along the perimeter. A signature element is the pale blue ceiling, which is illuminated by large circa lighting pendants. In addition, all seating is specially treated to resist stains, ideal for a large family.

Sometimes, the smallest spaces can have the biggest impact! The focal point of this room is a fabulous porthole cabinet by BOBO Intriguing Objects, which is flanked by Visual Comfort brass sconces and glossy shiplap as the backdrop. Thanks to Butler’s life-long fascination with technology and acumen for engineering, speakers in the living room are inset into the wall and painted to match the drywall.

In today’s world of gleaming high-tech homes, the one the couple shares is next-level. Butler, the owner of a technology firm that services the federal government, has an insatiable need for technology. He is not just driven by the latest developments in the field, which he exploits to the fullest, but his eye is set on the future. He doesn’t want what everybody else has; he wants to have what everybody else wants.

Almost every room has a well-thought-out, inventive, automated component. Butler jokes that he thought more about the technology than how the house would be furnished.

In fact, technology is, in a sense, part of the home’s design scheme. It is intelligent, comfortable, and perfectly synched to the couple’s lifestyle. The furnishings are minimal, clean-lined, and neutral. The living spaces are uncluttered by cords or clunky devices. Yet, you know there is more to the house than meets the eye. It feels strangely alive and ready to respond with “your wish is my command,” at the tap of a button or by a verbal request from its owners. This house doesn’t disappoint.

s Ronal Butler was sketching out his dream home in his head, he knew that the view would be the star of the show. And it is. In the 8,500-square-foot home Butler created with wife Martha Lloyd, the two-story window wall reveals a sparkling, unobstructed view of the Potomac. The view is what attracted him to the land, but he wanted a co-star: technology.

A striking light fixture, surround sound, a meal prepared in the chef’s kitchen, and water views ensure a stimulating evening.

A neutral design scheme of mostly grey and white in the kitchen does not detract from river views.

Butler has written custom routines into the voice system where one command can perform multiple functions. For example, an instruction to turn up the overhead lights in the theater also controls the wall sconces and the lights on the theater stairs. A built-in flat screen in the master bedroom glides forward and then swivels at the perfect angle for Lloyd to watch TV in bed. Butler jokes that when the time comes, even the Christmas tree will have a technology

As visitors stroll from room to room, Butler talks to his home, and it responds: lights dim, the music selection changes, one window blind lowers halfway. Right off the foyer, a circular glass pneumatic elevator whisks its owners from floor to floor by voice command. Each of the home’s 11 televisions, lights, thermostats, alarms, home theater, sound system, and most of the window coverings can be manipulated by voice and/or computer device.

But not everyone got things right in the beginning of the five-year project, completed just last year. Butler said he considered three builders before settling on Joy Design + Build, a custom builder based in McLean, Virginia, with experience building waterfront properties. Butler said he chose Joy because the company listened, and he felt the process was collaborative. They both wanted the same thing: a successful project where everyone walked away satisfied.

Butler said he ultimately settled on the Richmond, Virginia-based tech firm Livewire LLC to oversee the technology build-out. “They never said no, and they found a way to do what we wanted,” he says. “The CEO even came to our house to make sure they got it right.”

This goal has been achieved. With its geometrical angles and modern form, the Lloyd/ Butler home stands out from its mostly traditional brick-and-stone neighbors. Its exterior is a combination of white stucco and black metal with brown, horizontal Trespa high-pressure laminate panels that have the look of wood and hug the top of the house.

“Incomponent.ourprevious home, we added technology where we could get it in, but with this house, we built it into the infrastructure.” Butler admits that his need for seamless technology was a challenge to the builder and to technology companies who would be tasked with outfitting the house. “We were asking for things they had never done,” Butler says. “In the theater, for instance, we wanted the drapes to open on command to reveal the screen. One company told me that they couldn’t do it, and another company tried to convince me that I didn’t want it.”

Liam Sullivan, who worked closely with the couple for Joy Design + Build, credits Butler and Lloyd with knowing what they wanted, which led to a relatively smooth build. “It is incredibly helpful when someone has a vision, and we can play off that,” Sullivan says of Butler and Lloyd’s decisiveness. “It was a collaboration, and we wanted to help them get what they wanted.”

The contemporary home, with its abundance of windows and water views, is a full-circle moment for Butler. As a young man growing up in Detroit, Butler used to leave home 30 minutes early most days before heading into his high school concession job at the Detroit Zoo. He used the extra time, he explains, to drive around the waterfront community close to the zoo, where he would admire the homes and daydream about the lives of the people who lived there.

“There were a lot of houses on the lake, and you would just drive around and see all the glass in the back,” Butler says. “I didn’t know people could live like that because it wasn’t like that where I grew up.”

Today, Butler and Lloyd are the people in Butler’s daydreams with an affluent lifestyle fueled by two successful careers. “We feel very fortunate,” Butler says. “We couldn’t ask for anything more. There are no existing technologies or features out there that we have not incorporated in this house,” he says. “This home is a literal expression of our dream.”

Butler has Zoom meetings in a fully equipped home theatre on the home’s lower level, with a giant movie screen with retractable drapes and adjustable seats.
