Kymberly Taylor, Robert Haywood and Hospice supporter Barb Bohan at Fashion for a Cause.

We look especially happy in our publisher's photo because we had the honor of helping support Fashion for a Cause, Hospice of the Chesapeake's annual fundraiser for Chesapeake Kids. It takes a very special kind of person, emotionally skilled and compassionate, who is able to usher our loved ones out of this world and at the same time care for the families who will miss them. We salute the Hospice of the Chesapeake and each and every individual caregiver. As you browse our pages, we hope you enjoy our main features. The first reveals a tidewater-style home that draws inspiration from the Shiplap House, one of the oldest historic colonial-era homes in Annapolis. A great team of professionals joined forces to fashion a modern home with diverse gardens that loosely frame the property, encouraging communication on both sides. The second feature explores a residence on Weems Creek that, through the devoted work of a talented group of professionals, fulfills the vision of a top executive in the building industry. We believe these homes fulfill our raison d'être: to reveal the creativity and architectural character of interior design and building in the Chesapeake Bay region. In addition, we have surprises for you: a new column by the High-Heeled Gardener (Kymberly), who advocates gardening in any shoes one happens to have on; our Premier Builder's Showcase, spotlighting some of the most talented professionals in our region; and, finally on our travel page, a story on an art tour de force in Los Angeles: The Broad Museum. Read on and enjoy!

For this project, the homeowners, along with an architect, an interior designer, and a builder ignited a fire of creativity that forged a one-of-a-kind waterfront home in Annapolis. “It was a collaborative effort from beginning to end,” says one homeowner, who, with her husband, worked hand-in-hand with architect Devin Kimmel, interior designer Catherine Lowe, and builder Raymond Gauthier, owner of Lynbrook of Annapolis. The couple wanted to trade in their woodsy lifestyle for waterfront living. The two-acre property they found sits at the confluence of the Magothy River and Chesapeake Bay. An existing 1920s-era home in very poor condition was taken down “piece by piece,” and replaced by a dramatic three-story, fourbedroom, four-and-a-half-bath mahogany and cedar-shingled house that also includes an in-law suite. A new swimming pool and pool house were constructed, and an existing outbuilding was repurposed to become a crab shack. The home’s architecture, which Kimmel calls “Tidewater Modern” loosely echoes elements of the Shiplap House in historic Annapolis, notes Kimmel, who often finds inventive ways to reference local history in

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Four expansive slabs of Fantasy Brown granite surround the gas fireplace in the living room. his work. Shiplap House is a pre-Victorian residence, circa 1715, located on at the end of Pinkney Street near City Dock. One of the oldest surviving historic structures in Annapolis, it has a pitched roof, plain façade, and a fireplace at its gabled end. Kimmel retained elements of the pitched roof, gabled end, and chimney, but “pushed it up a bit,” creating a taller building. Instead of traditional double-hung windows with muntins, he opened up the back with 48 feet of glass, eight feet tall. Like a traditional Tidewater residence, the home is surrounded by working land, or in this case, gardens. These unwind like a strand of pearls, and loosely circle the property, beginning with the entrance gate and ending at the pool overlooking the bay. This is not unusual for Kimmel. An architect and landscape architect, he approaches the project as an organic whole. His mindfully curated “garden rooms” have invisible thresholds and begin at the far end of the driveway. Semi-formal plantings give way

to a meadow garden that transitions into an edible garden, with fruit trees and berries. A vegetable garden with a greenhouse continues along the side of the house. There is a summer garden on the home’s south side and, finally, a lush pool garden with sparkling views. Like a true modern Annapolis home, it has a crab shack and water access. “It’s right on the edge, you can smell the Bay,” says Kimmel. The entire team met every two weeks throughout the two-plus year project to make sure that “no stone was unturned,” says Gauthier. “We work together throughout the process so that all expectations are met.” There were several construction challenges, says Tobin Poole, who served as the onsite project supervisor, such as having to do a “dry layout” before installing the massive first floor granite fireplace, and dealing with a cold, snowy winter during which an enormous oak tree fall into the swimming pool—“that was interesting,” says Poole— but nothing was insurmountable.

Vol. 10, No. 4 2019 39

The curved white oak and iron stairs, designed by the architect, were built by The Stair Guys.

Minimal sculptural built-ins are in keeping with the home’s mid-century modern style. 40

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Clean, uncluttered spaces reflect the wife’s love of architecture and the husband’s optical engineering background. The spare design thoughtfully highlights carefully selected works of art and crafts—many purchased during outings to the American Craft Council’s annual show in Baltimore. Also prominent are “space-age” materials such as cold-rolled steel and four expansive slabs of Fantasy Brown granite that surround the gas fireplace in the living room.

“We wanted to combine the classics of modern furniture with mid-century design,” says Lowe. “The house is a homage to what the owners do and reflects the essence of who they are.”

Lowe chose a neutral palette of white, gray, and taupe so as not to compete with the landscape. However, the striking furnishings may do just that. These include a Mies van der Rohe bench, Holly Hunt sofa, Eero Saarinen tulip table and chairs, and art, such as a sumiink still life study by Julie Keaten-Reed.

The homeowners credit Lowe for “reining in” their many ideas, and architect Kimmel for “elevating” their style. “We would have been lost without them,” says the wife. “They helped us focus.”

The kitchen, designed by Melissa Sakell of Kenwood Kitchens, serves as a center for the main floor. And it possesses clean lines and an open plan that Sakell describes as “California Contemporary.”

One of the showstoppers in the home is the curved white oak and iron staircase in the entryway, designed

The kitchen design follows the same disciplined palette of the rest of the home, using striking spare sculptural forms rather than excess patterning or adornment.

by Kimmel and built by The Stair Guys. “It’s a work of art itself,” says the wife.

Lush gardens surround the home, and peek through every window and door.

The couple say they wouldn’t do anything differently when it comes to their new home, which took approximately two-and-a-half years to complete. The peaceful location and cohesive design have given them space for their own pursuits, such as gardening, and the ability to welcome their many guests (they’ve even hosted a wedding there). The time each professional devoted to this endeavor was well spent. With its spare, disciplined beauty and rare perfection, this home’s creative fires continue to burn brightly. AH

custom builder Custom residential building is one of the most demanding professions. It requires enlisting and coordinating a huge array of skilled craftsman and professionals, from carpenters, cabinetmakers, roofers, painters, plumbers and the list goes on and on. While an architect is the principle designer of a home and shapes the overall concept as well as the aesthetic details, all will fail without a quality builder, including one who can interpret an architect's drawings. The most experienced builders are often so knowledgeable, and on the ground daily, that they are the ones making suggested adjustments to best realize a home owner's vision. A premier builder can give you their perspective on working with various architects, designers, landscapers, too. So choose your builder carefully. Picking the right one is a professional and personal decision. After all, your builder will be a central part of your life for several years and more. With respect to the building profession, we have assembled for our readers a collection of top builders in the greater Annapolis area and the Eastern Shore. These are sponsored profiles, but we have been selective in who we invited to participate and we have known and worked with many of these builders for years.

THE PROJECT Logistics are often difficult for an in-town build, but navigating the site requirements on this new waterfront home on Spa Creek were particularly challenging. Extensive tree protection preceded carefully staged site work, with tight lot lines and a pool overlooking the water. The house captures downtown views, with its clad windows and doors open to decks and terraces at the water’s edge. The exterior features natural cedar roof shingles and woven corner fiber cement siding. The interior takes on a decidedly modern feel with brushed white oak floors, stone fireplace surround, and a chef ’s kitchen with exotic stone countertops. Extensive interior millwork is complemented by the feature staircase with wrought iron detailing.

THE PROJECT Nestled onto the shore of the South River, this beautiful home and Guest House capitalizes on its location by incorporating the indooroutdoor style of living many homeowners seek to emulate. The interior of the home consists of walnut hardwood floors, cherry paneling in the bar and beautiful shades of blues sprinkled on the walls, appliances and furniture. Transitioning to the exterior of the home, the fir timber trusses make quite the statement with their intricate design and their striking size. The beautifully crafted trusses are featured in both the interior of the home; in the master suite and upper bedroom as well as the Guest house screened porch; and also on the exterior of the home. The roofing is western red cedar shingles which greets the homeowners with a warm and glowing appearance on brilliant sunny days, and warms up the home’s grey and white coloring on the cloudier days. With screened in porches and beautifully designed and landscaped outdoor sitting areas, these home owners are sure to experience all that Chesapeake Bay living has to offer, from both inside and outside of the walls of their custom home.

The entire interior of the home was removed, from an endless sea of vinyl flooring throughout the original interior, to walls taken down to the studs allowing for a new, open floor plan, perfect for the client’s large family. The home was renovated, while incorporating specific personal elements such as refurbished materials, including an antique wooden door and frame, used for the couple’s wedding and built into the entrance to the breezeway off the living room, leading to the master bedroom suite. New plumbing, electrical wiring, and appliances were all installed, along with traditional elements such as a stone fireplace. Pops of color are throughout the home, and add a modern touch to neutral textures such as grass cloth wall coverings and butch block walnut and quartz countertops. The Country Charm home is filled with warmth, color, and character, serving as the perfect oasis for this family of eight in Huntington, Maryland. 54

THE HORIZON GROUP Over the course of the last 35 years, Horizon Builders has developed into one of the Mid-Atlantic‘s most trusted and recognized residential builders. Horizon Builders is part of the Horizon Group, a collective of three construction companies that enable the team to effectively address residential projects of varied scope and scale. Passion, dedication, and ingenuity lay the groundwork for their relentless pursuit of the “perfect build.” Created from the architect’s vision and the owner’s dreams comes their mission: extreme craftsmanship, exceptional service. Founders Joe Bohm and George Fritz met as neighbors. After discovering their mutual passion for construction, Horizon Builders was born. Over the years, Horizon and the Horizon Group have established many long-lasting relationships within their companies, the architectural community and clients alike. The Horizon Group is headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland. THE PROJECT Building a house to meet the standards of today’s weather is challenging enough. When Horizon Builders, a division of the Horizon Group, was asked to build a contemporary beach home designed by renowned D.C. architect Robert Gurney, they quickly accepted the opportunity to let their talents shine. Perched on the sand dunes of the Atlantic coast, the house was designed for a very large and active family. The major challenge of the project from a construction standpoint was to build a durable and well-performing home for the family while maintain the integrity of the minimalist and contemporary design. Working as a team, Horizon, the owners, and Robert Gurney selected the most appropriate materials, developed the most efficient details, and built a project to withstand all the wind, rain, waves, and sun the environment cares to share.

The High-Heeled Gardener

Prada

Purple

By Kymberly Taylor

Sage in the

How did this column begin? Before work one morning, I quickly planted a flat of marigolds in my high heels. Then, clumped to a meeting attended by impeccably groomed clients, tracking fresh dirt across a very white carpet, embarrassing my colleagues. I arrived at this engagement and countless others with mud clinging to my high heels so earned the nickname “The High-Heeled Gardener.”

I am obsessed with shoes and plants, for they each have special qualities, things to say and to infer. So, my mission in this column is two-fold: to encourage you to acquire shoes with personality (high-heels optional), and to inspire busy folks to garden in whatever shoe one happens to have on. Pradas are tougher than they look (they are Italian) and don’t enjoy being tucked away in their original velvet bag. They prefer to be seen, and paired with just about anything, including jeans and the right pair of shorts. Tend to your garden, even just a little, each day. To help you, the plants I write about have cheerful temperaments and are well-suited for even the busiest people. For the herb garden, consider purple sage. This ancient perennial, native to the Mediterranean region, is lesser-known than the grey sages but quietly stunning with purple leaves fading to flint grey and green. An herb from the mint family, sage has a sweet, yet savory flavor. Its botanical name, Salvia officinalis, comes from the Latin word salvere, meaning “to be saved.” This makes sense! With its trusty, vigorous growth habit, this tough little plant tells me to perk up and shake off unfortunate occurrences like driving off from the gas station with the fuel hose still in my gas tank and being chased by the police. (The attendant thought I stole it!) To get over similarly shocking incidents in your day, pick a few leaves, rub them together and inhale a pungent aroma. And, relax. This sage has a forthright independent personality and needs nothing from you, not even water. It grows well in sun or part sun and is heat and drought tolerant. Once planted correctly and established, Salvia officinalis grows happily and productively until the first frost. And, will endure the winter months, maintaining its practical beauty. AH Follow Kymberly Taylor, editor-in-chief of AHM, on Instagram and Facebook: @thehighheeledgardener

Try placing a sage leaf on a piece of good bread with a drop of olive oil. It’s delicious! Sage has outstanding nutritional benefits. A tablespoon contains much higher doses than the recommended daily requirements of B vitamins such as folic acid, thiamin, pyridoxine, and riboflavin, as well as healthy amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, thiamin, and copper. Drawing by Marta Hansen

By Elizabeth Heubeck Photography by David Burroughs Homeowners Frank Cicero and his wife Lori moved into their Annapolis home in November 2018, but the vision for it began almost a decade earlier. Cicero knew he wanted a house with a water view. Having traveled the country and grown up on Baltimore’s east side, he was familiar with Annapolis and drawn to its aesthetic appeal. Always envisioning building a new house that, as he put it, “looks old,” Cicero found his “aha” moment while sitting on a Delaware beach in the summer of 2009. Leafing through a local magazine dedicated to the Chesapeake Bay region, he came across an article profiling a striking house designed by Annapolis architect Marta Hansen. Cicero contacted her immediately. They soon began work on conceptualizing the family’s multigenerational, picture-perfect home that boasts thoughtful details inside and out, as well as breathtaking views from virtually every room. Cicero enlisted Matt Long of Gate One Builders to make his vision a reality. Long explains that “our team consisted of many talented craftsmen. Every detail was carefully considered by the entire design team.”

The interior decor is welcoming, with each space well-proportioned. Comfortable furnishings and mood-lifting colors inspire both conversation and introspection.

Accentuating the home’s classic American sensibilities in the dining room and study are handmade furnishings by Thos. Moser. 68

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Cicero, a self-described obsessive-compulsive, is a 35-year veteran and COO of 84 Lumber Company and therefore was not a hands-off client. Initially acknowledging that he was “pretty involved” in the process, Cicero eventually admitted that he had a hand in, as he put it, “every little crevice” of the home project. He’s quick to add that the home’s interior was “his wife’s canvas that she painted on.” Long notes that “Frank and Lori both had independent but equal roles in developing the finishes. Frank very much focused his attention on the exterior aesthetics and Lori had immense interest in the interior design and selections.” As it turns out, the couple’s meticulous input served the project well. Even before entering the home, the property boasts distinctive features. Near the front door, for instance, is an eye-catching, copper rain chain: a

fanciful yet functional Japanese-inspired substitute for a downspout in which vertically-aligned, cuplike features attached by attractive chains guide water from the roof to the ground, where native plants soak up rainwater. It’s just one example of how the home and surrounding property were designed with an eye toward both aesthetic appeal and environmental mindfulness. While the Ciceros, whom principal landscape architect Jay Graham describes as “good stewards,” set out to make environmentally sound choices with the property and its landscaping, complying with state zoning regulations also factored into some of their landscape decisions. For instance, any plants they added within 100 feet of a body of water—in this case, Weems Creek—had to be native.

Like many things in this home, bunk beds are custom made and intelligently designed; note the narrow wooden step ladder in the children’s bedroom.

When the Ciceros bought the property, a steep hillside leading to the creek was, in their words, all “briars and brambles.” Graham recalls, “We thought: Wouldn’t it be nice if we developed an understory—flox, foamflower, Solomon’s seal—all woodland natives.” They did just that, replacing dead trees and invasive plants with native plants that prevent erosion and naturally flourish in the setting. So too do the two attractive rain gardens on the property. Ultimately, the home’s stormwater management system helped earn the home a Gold certification from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the most widely recognized green building rating system in the world. Many of the painstaking details that went into complying with regulations into also added significant appeal to the property. Consider the gracious boardwalk (its slats comply with state legislation regarding the ratio of impervious to pervious area on newly built construction) that leads from the back deck to a covered, yet open, patio high on a hillside overlooking the creek. From either the home’s main living room area or back deck, eyes naturally gravitate to the walkway and revitalized sloping hillside on the property’s northwest side. Whereas before the hill was impassable, now oversized pavers form an inviting pathway amid the native woodlands and down to a small shed that contains paddleboards and other water toys just steps from the creek’s edge. It’s no wonder architect Hansen refers to the property as “an oasis of parkland in the city.” It’s a setting that begs to let light into the house and to provide ample opportunities to enjoy the view outdoors too. “We jogged the house back along the south and west sides, creating more perimeter area to maximize that number of windows for sunlight and views,” Hansen says.

A potting area warmed by pastels and custom plank wall is equipped with just about everything a gardener needs, including lots of elbow room.

Undeniably, the home’s windows, generous both in size and number and foregoing window treatments, allow for endless gazing outdoors. The home was conceived to welcome nature. Interior designer Melissa McLay explains that this “home not only has great light exposure but wonderful views of the water and the gardens from all the windows. Interior selections for furniture, fabrics, and paint colors were made with this in mind.” She adds that “we wanted to ensure the interior of the home was harmonious with the exterior of the home and that they did not compete with each other.” But there are endless special features to absorb once you step inside the house, from the two adorable sets of custom bunk beds separated by

Cicero, who began his vision for the property with the setting foremost in his mind, has exactly if not more than what he imagined a decade ago. AH

This landscape by Campion Hruby Landscape Architects was part of the renovation of a mid-century modern house by KUBE Architecture. Straight Up on Dining Out

The Blackwall Barn & Lodge BY CHRISTINE FILLAT

With its expansive menu and various structures, The Blackwall Barn & Lodge is in the business of catering to large groups. The decor follows the same basic formula designer Bonnie Knock established in the other Blackwall restaurants, but this time on a larger scale: the establishment seeks to wow you with the simple expanse of the space and its limited color scheme. The rooms, however, look a bit commonplace and could be cozier, with noise levels so high that any ambient music is undetectable. There are a lot of hard surfaces with nothing built-in to amend the sound. The most notable feature is the sheer volume of people who walk through the doors, looking for a communal experience in this remote part of Anne Arundel County. You won’t get fine dining here. It is rather more casual, pub-like in its environs. I am reminded of a hotel dining room that caters to large groups of tourists fresh off of the bus. There is nothing wrong with that; just be prepared for this sort of experience.

92

ANNAPOLIS HOME

The cocktails are lovely, revealing a top-notch beverage program. A watermelon mojito is filled with luscious chunks of watermelon. A cucumber gimlet is made with ribbons of cucumber. Both are completely refreshing and perfect. Fried green tomatoes are a winner, coming to the table piping hot and with a beautiful crust, resting on top of a classic remoulade. We wish the rest of the meal was as good as the cocktails and fried green tomatoes. What was the point of an anemic spoonful of chicken soup as an amuse-bouche? It seemed like chicken stock leftovers with very overcooked bits of chicken. The watermelon gazpacho was not very interesting either. With watermelon, strawberries, and tomato, the soup promised to be something special. Nothing elevated the soup beyond its little porcelain cup. A gazpacho I had gotten from Rutabaga Juice Bar in West Annapolis the day before was far superior, with fresh flavors and spice. The Blackwall gazpacho is going to have to try harder

to be as good. At about this point in the meal, our server lost interest in us. Though she hustled past us often, she didn’t look our way or come to see if we wanted anything. She disappeared for lengthy amounts of time when we desperately wanted to order our entrées. A large table in the corner seemed to captivate her attention. This is a management issue; perhaps they needed more servers to handle the crowd. We missed the opportunity to try the prime rib. (The kitchen ran out). So we tried the short ribs. Hearty, and served over mashed potatoes, the tender meat was what one would expect from well-cooked short ribs. This is true comfort food. Rockfish is a local fish. There is no excuse for it to be anything but the freshest thing on the menu. Not here. The Rockfish was served super salty, and buried in an overly rich risotto, far too heavy for this time of year. It was disappointing.

Luxurious & Affordable Shower Door Designs & Installation

What about the desserts? A chocolate bread pudding is very, very sweet. If you like maraschino cherries, whipped cream that tastes like from a can and dense chocolate, by all means try the chocolate bread pudding. The fruit cobbler is all crust and very little fruit at all. If you’re expecting a dessert with fruit in it, see if the kitchen still has any apple pie. They ran out of the apple pie the night we were there. At this juncture, we have to ask ourselves what we are doing here, other that the fact that it is a relatively new restaurant in the area. With middle-of-the-road food and so-so service, why travel and spend your money to visit this establishment? Sometimes simply a meal out is what we want. One will definitely get that here. Just don’t have high expectations. Plus, patrons who live in Gambrills will surely enjoy the opportunity to have an eating establishment nearby to visit. AH Christine Fillat lives on the Magothy River and is an aficionado of Chesapeake Bay cooking and living.

ARCHITECTURE BY ROBERT HAYWOOD

Arata Isozaki has won the 2019 Pritzker Architecture Prize. “Possessing a profound knowledge of architectural history and theory, and embracing the avant-garde, he never merely replicated the status quo,” stated the jury about the 87-year-old Japanese architect. His first oversees commission was the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (1986). Recently, Isozaki pushed the limits of public architecture by designing with artist Anish Kapoor (famed for the “Bean” in downtown Chicago) a transportable, pneumatic concert hall. The concert hall is like a traveling circus, bringing shelter and music to different communities. Titled Ark Nova, the eggplant colored hall is an air-filled membrane that can be transported, inflated, and then deflated. The design was conceived after a major earthquake and tsunami hit Japan in 2011. Ark Nova, according to one author, “was intended to bring culture and spirit to communities still rebuilding after the devastation.”
