Sheringham Open for business as usual Though some businesses are still badly affected, especially Straits Chip shop and Crofters Restaurant which are still closed,

Sheringham remains open for business with the upcoming tourist season not far from full flow.

Anglia Water have said the works to repair the sinkhole could continue all summer and the NNDC have been approached by Sheringham Town council to allow for some extra free parking in Morris Street to help as some spaces have been lost on the High St.

Sheringham Carnival committee have confirmed that all the events scheduled will go ahead as planned, check the website, facebook or better still buy a programme!

War Memorial Garden Redevelopment Project

Sheringham War Memorial Garden is in an exposed location and the maintenance of it by NNDC has been challenging and the subject of local comment over recent years. As part of Sheringham Town Council’s Greener Sheringham Project discussions have taken place between the Town Council and the District council as to how this garden could be enhanced and reflect the importance placed on it by the community as the War Memorial and to also become more sustainable in times of changing climate conditions. NNDC is therefore proposing, working with the Town Council and Community Groups, that it be re-designed as part of a community project.

After a well-attended meeting at the Community Centre on the 21st May with Sheringham in Bloom present, The Royal British Legion and interested members of the public a number of points were proposed.

These included as a priority reconnecting the War Memorial with the main garden by the Royal British Legion. Ideas for planting were

extensive and very much focused on the possibility of this being a showcase garden for people to both enjoy but also exemplify what can be grown in our coastal environment.

There was also enthusiasm for a sensory garden to be included within the scheme.

The Greener Sheringham Project would now like to see the community’s ideas and designs for the garden. A design pack including plans and a specification can be collected from the Town Hall (Monday Wednesday, Friday 9.30-12.30) or the Community Centre (during opening hours) The closing date for designs is 31-07-2019 and all the designs will be displayed at the Community Centre from the 5th August. We would like as many people from across all ages, enthusiastic gardeners, local organisations, gardening companies and

Sheringham – Otterndorf Twinning Association

At a Committee meeting held on Monday 20 May, a new Chairman, Derick Bowler, was welcomed.

He replaces Evelyn Meakin, who held the position for 11 years. The Committee thanked Evelyn for her work on furthering the relationship between Sheringham and Otterndorf and welcomed Derick. He joined the Association last November after he and his wife Liz represented Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club on a visit to Otterndorf in August 2018, making contact with Lions Club Land Hadeln which covers the Otterndorf area.

The Association currently has 23 members and would welcome new members, particularly if

garden centres to contribute their ideas. If the prospect of the whole garden is too much then think about a section that you would particularly like to see incorporated within the space. In September the Greener Sheringham Group will then look at the ideas with NNDC and develop a plan based on the community’s ideas. It is then hoped to have much of the garden developed in time for the WW2 2020 commemorations.

Knowledge of the German language is not essential, but would, of course, be helpful. Far more important is the ability to like and get on with people from a different culture, but you would perhaps be surprised how similar we and the Germans are in many ways.

Otterndorf is situated on the North German coast between Cuxhaven and Hamburg and is on the estuary of the river Elbe. Like Sheringham, it is a seaside town with a similar sized population.

The Association celebrated thirty years of friendship with Otterndorf in 2018.

The Association wants to renew links with

local schools and their modern languages departments. Despite the continuing political uncertainty the Association believes that maintaining friendly links with other countries is very important and should be strengthened.

Church and charity praises volunteers transforming their confidence or tackled mental health lives across Norfolk issues.

Volunteers Week at the beginning of this month saw the Salvation Army recognising the key role volunteers play in its work to support those in need across Norfolk as well as highlighting the personal benefits of volunteering.

Volunteers are the vital backbone of The Salvation Army’s outreach and community work, which tackles a diverse range of issues in response to local need, from homelessness to poverty, isolation to unemployment. Local Salvation Army volunteers join a movement mobilised in 131 countries worldwide working to transform lives and communities.

The church and charity has 15 church and community centres across Norfolk, a drop-incentre for people experiencing homelessness in Norwich, a care home for older people in North Walsham and a network of drivers and chaperones on standby to escort victims of modern slavery to a place of safety.

Erica, 64, is a church member and volunteer at Sheringham Salvation Army. After attending The Salvation Army in the USA, she sought out The Salvation Army in Sheringham when she moved back to the UK following the

break-up of her marriage. She remembers finding a ‘new family’ – ‘they picked me up and volunteering helped me get to know new people.�

One of the activities Erica supports as a volunteer is Solo Link - a network for people who live alone. The group meets every other Saturday at The Salvation Army for tea, coffee and biscuits, to catch up and organise group activities. Members from the group have arranged cinema trips, meals out for breakfast and lunch, played pitch and putt, visited Cromer Pier and been on holiday together.

Erica says “I know what it’s like to live on your own. You’re surrounded by ‘happy couples’ and find it hard to find affordable food, holidays and events that aren’t catering for couples or families.�

It’s clear that Erica has used her own experiences to help others. She has developed a Solo Link address book with people’s interests listed so that if a member wants to do something but doesn’t want to do it alone, such as shopping, going for a walk or visiting a coffee shop, they can contact another group member to see if they are free.

The Salvation Army encourages people from all walks of life to consider how volunteering can also support wellbeing. For Erica, there were social benefits while others have built up

TRUNCH FUN DAY WITH OPEN GARDENS AND SCARECROWS

Trunch Village Society are staging this annual event on Sunday 7 July between 10am and 4pm (with the Open Gardens between 10am and 2pm). Admission is just £4 for adults and children are free. All proceeds go to the Village Society who is then able to provide financial support to ensure the smooth running of local clubs, organisations and projects in the village.

A visitors’ programme will include a map identifying the locations of the amazing scarecrows and the beautiful gardens as one meanders around the village.

There is an opportunity to attend a Beekeeping Demonstration run by a Master Beekeeper (12pm til 4pm) and to take part in a children’s treasure trail.

Many of the events will be held in ‘The Paddock’, a delightfully enclosed area in the centre of the village within a short stroll from the allocated free parking area.

In the paddock will be a fine array of craft stalls, a marquee housing a summer flower show and another with an art exhibition. Children will be well catered for with numerous fun games, face painting, lamb petting and even owls. In an effort to provide something for everyone there will also be classic cars, gun dog display, live band, choir, detectorists, static model aircraft display and even belly dancing.

Ploughman’s lunches, tea, coffee and a variety of cakes will be available in the Village Hall whilst the family friendly Social Club with licensed bar will be providing a barbecue along with live music. The Trunch Crown Inn is within a stone’s throw of the paddock where food and drink will also be available.

Michael Tyler, who forms part of an organising committee for this Fun Day, says “We have tried to cater for everyone and invite visitors to enjoy a few leisurely hours in our picturesque village just a mile or two inland from the seaside resort of Mundesley supporting a worthy cause”.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society Summer Concert Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society returns to The Auden Theatre on Saturday 13 July at 7.30pm for its end of season Summer Concert which features some wonderful 19th century music linked by a German theme.

Sir Edward Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands was written in 1894 in homage to a memorable Bavarian holiday. The song lyrics were adapted to Elgar's music by the composer’s wife Alice. She gave the songs sub-titles in recollection of favourite places visited during the holiday. It will be performed in its original arrangement for piano accompaniment – perfect bright music for a summer evening.

Elgar was greatly inspired by Johannes Brahms during his visits to Leipzig so it is very fitting that the programme includes Brahm’s highly popular German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) which will be performed in German with the original accompaniment for piano duet. Composed between 1865 and 1868 it comprises seven movements making this work Brahms's longest composition.

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

Eight members of the Society entertained the meeting on 11 June with displays from their own collections.

The range of subjects and styles of collection possible were evident from these brief presentations of 10 sheets each.

The history of First Day Covers began the evening after which stamps relating to a member’s connections with the city of Hanover were shown.

Early Guernsey stamps, dating from 1871 were followed by part of a collection of early Indian postmarks, including those from Governors’ and Viceroys’ camps, Railway Mail Services and Queen Victoria’s Coronation Durbar! Another member had recently acquired a box of Danish philatelic material and displayed a set of First Day Covers from the 1970s. A display of Australia’s beautiful commemorative stamp series of the First Fleet’s arrival in 1887, a mixed collection of PHQ cards each related to the interests of the collector, and examples of stamps from the Pacific islands completed the evening.

The next meeting is on Monday 8 July at 7.30pm in the Church Hall, West Runton.

WEYBOURNE WI SUMMER OUTING

On Wednesday 5 June 35 members from Weybourne WI enjoyed a day out at the Thursford Collection.

We began our day in the museum, where we were able to wander amongst the many steam engines and musical organs, before having a ride on the merry go round.

We were then entertained by Robert Wolfe, playing a selection of rousing tunes on the Wurlitzer organ, before we retired to the Garden Pavilion for a buffet lunch.

After lunch we split into two groups for a back stage tour. It was fascinating to hear about the enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to produce the Christmas Spectacular Show each year and we especially enjoyed seeing the huge store of costumes. The tour concluded with a walk through Santa’s Magical Journey, which was eerily quiet at this time of year.

Finally, we returned to the Pavilion for an informative talk by John Cushing on how his father started the Thursford Steam Collection and how the museum has grown and developed since John took over the business in 1977.

Celia Howe gave a vote of thanks and we all agreed it had been a very enjoyable summer outing.

We enjoyed a visit and presentation by the Marketing Director of Wiltshire Farm Foods, which has a large depot in Dereham.

We enjoyed some hot food samples straight out of the oven and were impressed with the range of food which could be ordered to suit all appetites and eating ability.

A large glossy brochure showed food in three plate sizes for meat lovers, vegans, vegetarians plus deserts.

A food booklet entitled ‘A Guide to Nutrition & Special diets’ is available on request for people with dietary and religious requirements which shows detailed nutritional information - weight, energy, fat, saturates, sugars, salt, carbs, fibre & protein - in each dish.

Art Exhibition at Red Lobster Bryony Reed is a contemporary oil painter, based in London and North Norfolk where she works as Studio Manager and Tutor at the Norfolk Painting School. As it is almost the end of my Presidency (Anton Elliott takes over at the end of this month) I feel I must put into words how much I appreciate all the generous help with cash etc. everyone in our area has given.

machine, also for the Jenny Lind Hospital. I am pleased to confirm that the portable ECG machine has been ordered and will soon arrive plus another necessary piece of equipment. Fortunately the suppliers had a second order from the NNUH so they reduced the price, thereby enabling another item to be bought. Thank you to the suppliers too.

We will soon give money to the EAAA, a very worthy cause and also to the British Heart Foundation. There may be some funds available for another small organisation. We will decide which one when this year’s fund-raising has been completed.

I have enjoyed this year as President, meeting many new people and I thank my fellow Lions for their support this year.

Good Luck Anton for next year. I know your chosen charity will be just as worthwhile.

Finally, we have made new friends, helped the Community and would welcome anyone of any age who feels like coming to one of our meetings to do something worthwhile to help others. She was recently selected from over 400 applicants to show her work alongside 6 other artists at the Salisbury International Arts Festival in Wiltshire. The exhibition, Insatiable Mind, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the moon landings and runs until the 16th July 2019.

Public commissions form a large part of her professional practice because of her unique talent at incorporating art into the fabric of public spaces and buildings. Her current public art schemes include Rochester Riverside in Kent, Cleethorpes seafront in North East Lincolnshire and Kingston Bridge in Kingston upon Thames in Surrey.

Wishing to share her passion for art and nature she has recently launched a programme of drawing, photography and environmental workshops including willow weaving from her Silverwood Studio. Katayoun is offering bespoke group and individual sessions and mentoring, in historic photography and darkroom work. Over and above her professional work, Katayoun is keen to support North Norfolk talent and is working with the PCC to improve the exhibition facilities at Thorpe Market church making this a popular and well visited venue for North Norfolk artists, photographers and makers.

Katayoun’s Silverwood Art Studio and Darkroom is to be found in Northrepps and offers the perfect space for workshop participants to immerse themselves in a creative environment.

Sheringham Carnival Handbook Come Follow the Band The revamped Sheringham Carnival Handbook has been on sale since early May.

Now its easy to imagine what some of you may be thinking “here’s a jolly group who look as though they have just enjoyed an hour or two at the local hostelry - an evening of sampling the variety of local brews without letting the bottom of the glass go dry.” But you would be completely wrong.

Entitled ‘A Year in Sheringham’ it comprises 88 pages of information highlighting the town’s key events for a year not just Carnival activities but other organisations too, giving a better overview of what is happening locally!

This sextet from the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band are proof that it is possible to have high spirits with zero ABV. As the cheerful ensemble clearly demonstrates, being a member of the band does have time for joyful moments alongside the more serious business on practice evenings, when time is dedicated to preparing for forthcoming events or rehearsing new arrangements.

You will also find sparkling and vibrant adverts throughout for the many local businesses and activities and, to help you contact them, there is a concise ‘Friends of Sheringham Carnival’ directory/phone book at the back.

Several of the musicians, if not most, have been with the band for many years, which again proves it has something going for it. Would you believe there are members who are now ‘in their prime’ - although I won’t embarrass them by naming names - who started playing with the band when they were in their teens. It just goes to show how many years the band has been blowing its own trumpet. Whoops, I should say cornet!

You can find the handbook for sale in a number of shops in Sheringham during trading hours and, on Saturdays, volunteers are manning a table to sell them. Look out for the Blue Gazebo!

If you are a brass player you are always welcome, irrespective of standard, to sit in on practice evenings (Thursday at 7.30pm in Upper Sheringham Village Hall). Also, it is not unusual for holiday visitors to pop in to ’have a blow’. There’s dedication for you. Spring Notes from the Commons 2019 Spring has given us both warm and cold days with not a lot of consistency but overall because of the mild winter many wildlife species have put in an early appearance on the Commons. The following observations are mainly from regular contributor, Mark Clements and I.

Jerk lobster, crab, coconut and pea rice

At the Grove we always believe that a little bit of effort goes a long way. This is a fairly complicated recipe but really rewarding and just perfect for a rip-roaring summer barbeque.

Although the crab gets the plaudits, Cromer lobster is absolutely terrific and this dish is a firm favourite when it’s on during the season.

There’s nothing quite like sitting outside with some cracking seafood and a chilled bottle of white; last season we had a few couples actually helicopter in and land on the lawn all to enjoy this incredible produce the fishermen pull in from the North Sea. The junior chefs were tempted to take the chopper for a joyride but we managed to apprehend them at the front door, there’s not a qualified pilot amongst them but apparently it looked ‘pretty easy to fly’.

A lucky escape perhaps.

FoR THe lobSTeR • 2 cooked lobsters each weighing 600g 800g FoR THe JeRK SauCe • 1 tbsp of oil (Rapeseed or olive) • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 tsp fresh ginger, chopped or micro-planed where possible • 1 bunch of spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped

• 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg • 1/2 tsp allspice powder • 1 tsp chopped rosemary • 1 bay leaf • lime, zest and juice • 1 orange, zest and juice • 50g of caster sugar • 2 tbsp of soy sauce • 200ml of chicken stock • 1 tbsp of chopped coriander • sea salt CoConuT RiCe • 140g of basmati rice • 1 tsp sunflower oil • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced • 1 garlic, peeled and finely sliced • 100g frozen peas • 1 large dressed crab • 100ml of coconut milk • 100ml of chicken stock To SeRVe • chopped coriander • 2 limes, halved

Crack the claws and lay the lobster halves on a tray and spoon half the jerk sauce over them. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes while you light and heat up the barbecue.

Meanwhile, prepare the rice. Place a pan with a tight-fitting lid over a medium heat and add a drizzle of oil. Once hot, add the spring onions and garlic and sweat for 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Pour in the coconut milk and stock and bring to a simmer. Turn the heat down to low, then cover with the lid on and cook gently for 10 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and leave to stand, still covered, for 5 minutes, then add the crab and peas, folding gently

To finish the lobsters, place the lobster claws on a white-hot barbecue and cook for 3–4 minutes. Turn the lobsters' claws over and add the lobster tails, shell side down, and the lime halves, cut side down. Cook for 3–4 minutes, then turn the lobster tails over and cook for a further 2 minutes. Sprinkle over more chopped coriander and arrange the lime pieces to one side. Fluff up the rice with a fork and serve on the side.

Landlord update: Changes to Landlord and Agents Fees From 1 June 2019 all new tenancies must comply with the Tenant Fees Act 2019 (the 'Act'). Existing tenancies should also be compliant with the Act by 31 May 2020, or will be considered in breach. The Act is intended to limit the payments landlords and agents can charge tenants with residential tenancies, including Assured Shorthold Tenancies, student accommodation and licences to occupy.

The Act means that landlords and agents can only charge specific "Permitted Payments:

• Rent: The first year's rent must be in equal instalments. Any rent review clause within the first year of the tenancy must allow amendment up and down.

• Security Deposit: This remains broadly the same except that the amount chargeable will be capped. If the tenancy's total annual rent is less than £50,000, the maximum deposit that can be charged is five weeks' rent. A maximum of six weeks' rent can be charged for annual rents above £50,000.

• Holding Deposit: A landlord can still require a holding deposit, but this will be capped at one week's rent. A landlord cannot obtain more than one deposit for the same

property and it must be refunded within seven days of entering into the tenancy agreement or deciding not to proceed.

• alteration Fee: If a tenant requests an alteration to the lease the landlord can charge up to £50, plus any reasonable costs, if evidenced.

• Tenant's early Termination: If a tenant requests to end the tenancy early, either before the end of the fixed term or end of its notice period, the landlord can require a tenant to continue paying the rent until the original termination date, but cannot ask for it to be paid in a lump sum. The landlord can charge any reasonable costs incurred in arranging for a tenant leaving early. If a new tenant is found, the rent is only payable up to the start of the new tenancy.

• bills: The landlord can ask a tenant to pay utility, communication and council tax bills direct to the supplier or to themselves to be paid on the tenant's behalf. If payment is made through the landlord, they cannot charge any amount over the bill amount.

• Charges for late Payment: If the landlord wishes to charge for late payment it must set this out in the tenancy agreement. No fixed penalties can be charged, and interest can only be charged if rent is overdue by 14 days or more and at a rate no higher than 3% above the Bank of England's base rate.

• Replacement of Keys: The landlord must

set out in the tenancy agreement details of the payments that will be charged for replacement keys. The tenant can only be required to pay reasonable costs for replacement of keys and this must be evidenced by the landlord.

The Act means that landlords and agents will newly be responsible for many of the costs involved with setting up, renewing and ending a tenancy. They will have to pay fees such as those relating to creating an inventory, professional cleaning and legal fees.

If the landlord charges a cost other than a Permitted Payment, once the Act comes into force, it may be a civil offence with a financial penalty of up to £5,000. If another breach is committed within 5 years the landlord will have committed a criminal offence with an unlimited fine.

On Tuesday 4 June, after an excellent lunch and brief Annual General Meeting, Greg Cope, a member of the club, gave a fascinating talk on ‘The Aviation Bug and How I Survived It’.

Eschewing notes, he decided to wing it using a variety of props, mainly comprising some superb model aircraft, to prompt his memories.

Greg explained that aeroplanes had been his love for more than 40 years. As a teenager, he visited airports to indulge in the hobby of aircraft-spotting. This interest evolved into a long and successful career in aviation, his first real job involving the investigation of noise complaints at Luton Airport. Greg has worked for several companies, including Britannia Airways, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce,

initially in operations management, then moving on to selling aircraft and their engines.

Greg’s occupation involved travelling to Europe, America, the Middle East and Africa.

On his travels, his knowledge of French and German has been beneficial, and he also learned some words in Arabic and Swahili, this last language being particularly useful when, in 1992, he made his first aircraft sale to the President of Zanzibar.

Like many of us, Greg has experienced some turbulence during his career, having been made redundant twice, but he has always found new employment and continues to work in the industry as a contractor, still enjoying his chosen vocation.
