WEYBOURNE WI CELEBRATE IN STYLE WITH THE GIGGLY PIG

North Norfolk Photographic Society welcomed Ian Wilson ARPS to Holt on Wednesday 3 April.

From an early age, Tracy was expected to help with her parents fruit and veg stall on Romford Market. Tracy preferred this to school and couldn’t wait to leave. She fell in with a bad crowd, which eventually resulted in her being sent to prison for 10 years, following involvement in a drugs crime.

Ian is a member of Cambridge Camera Club and a well-known speaker, judge and photographer. The subject of his talk was on post-processing in Photoshop - but he opened by saying that he would mostly be dealing with lightroom and in particular with processing RAW images.

After initial despair at her sentence, Tracy decided to make the best of prison life and qualified as a gym instructor. However, after transferring to an open prison, she found her true vocation and trained to be a pig farmer.

She left prison with numerous qualifications in pig husbandry and with help from friends set up her own business, The Giggly Pig. Her career took off when she won a competition, ‘Trading Places’, run by Barclays Bank. She made headlines in several newspapers and was featured on tv and radio.

Now, 11 years later, she runs a successful business and admits that going to prison was the best thing that ever happened to her, as it turned her life around!

Her Giggly Pig pork products are sold at farmers’ markets and events throughout the country and her autobiography has recently been published.

There was the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of sausages before the afternoon concluded with tea and a selection of delicious cakes, which had been made by members.

RAW images are those stored by advanced cameras in as close to the form that they were ‘seen’ by the camera as possible, the idea being that there is no automatic adjustment to the image in the camera - it is left to the user to make all the adjustments later.

Ian had asked members to bring some images to be ‘adjusted’ and the most impressive, perhaps, was a series of 4 images taken on the same spot (using a tripod of course) whilst the sun set. This resulted in 4 quite different images, one seriously under-exposed, one over-exposed and two in between. Each image was adjusted and then ‘masks’ were created and then when combined the result was a picture where the cliffs and rocks were not too dark, the sky and sunset were not too bright.

Suffice to say, there was a lot of technical detail which the more advanced members found invaluable.

One tablespoon single cream.

Mix with fork loosely.

Return crab to cleaned shell and smooth into space.

Grate Norfolk Mardler cheese; enough to cover the crab.

Finely chop half a mild chilli and shake with cheese.

Cover crab.

Bake on 180c for 10 mins, checking cheese has melted.

The prunus tree is very bright, a glorious picture of pink and white, dwarf tulips and forget-me-nots mingle together, they don’t seem to mind the inclement weather.

The camellia bush has become quite tall, its creamy-white flowers grow along the brick wall.

The birds take a dip in the little round pond, then spread out their wings and sing a sweet song.

It’s lovely to see the garden in spring, and the pleasure and joy this season brings.

StART Concert

The first concert being promoted by StART is the accomplished Russian born pianist Veronika Shoot who will be performing at St Andrew’s Church Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6EZ. Born in Moscow, Veronika moved to the UK at the age of five when her father Vladislav Shoot became the composer-in-residence at Dartington Hall. By the age of seven years old she had performed her first recital, playing to a sold-out audience at the Dartington International Summer School music festival.

All Saints Church Beeston Regis John Hurst Exhibition

During the early Bank Holiday weekend, 4 -6 May, well known professional watercolourist and Sheringham resident, John Hurst, will be holding a special exhibition in Beeston Regis Church.

Aimed at raising funds for this beautiful coastal church, John has painted a new, colourful and detailed watercolour of the church, from which fine prints are to be published. Much of the proceeds from the original painting and all the profits from the prints are to be donated by the artist, who in the past has supported the national minsters of York, Durham and Lincoln in the same manner.

Last summer, John attended a flower festival at the church with his wife, Jacqui and was touched by the welcoming ethos that he encountered there. Over coffee and cake, fund raising for a new toilet came up in conversation with Assistant Curate, Revd Ruth Adamson. Having completed a major national charity project for Sir Ian Botham’s Foundation via his last watercolour book, ‘On My Way’, John was looking for the opportunity to support a local charity, so this seemed a very worthy initiative.

The original painting will be on sale at the exhibition, alongside a new collection of John’s maritime and Norfolk studies with an opportunity to reserve prints.

The exhibition will be open on Saturday 4 and Monday 6 May 10am - 4pm and Sunday 5 May noon – 4pm. Refreshments will be available.

RAF Radar Museum has become yesterday’s news…

Greg Hayman continued “Following wrapping chips! its most successful year ever, the RAF Radar Museum has opened for the 2019 season with an air of celebration as it has recently taken over the top spot as the best local visitor attraction according to those that know - the people who visit it.

We couldn’t wish for a better start to the year!”

In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF Radar museum has produced its own newspaper so that fish and chips can we wrapped up in it.

In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads, the museum is providing the printed newsprint wrappers for the takeaway service.

The newspaper includes a range of museum news and carries a voucher for a £1 off admission for visitors bringing the voucher with them to the museum.

Despite being a top visitor attraction, it has not always been well known as the museum sits on the site of one of our most Top Secret military bases and didn't even appear on a map until recently. That all changed when the Cold War ended and part of the base became a museum.

Museum marketing manager Greg Hayman said “We were looking for interesting ways to connect with potential visitors and we thought we would try this idea to combine great eating with a sense of nostalgia for how chips were wrapped in yesteryear.

“If it proves popular we hope to extend it throughout the season and maybe to chip shops in other towns. We like to think that we are making news and this way we are, quite literally!”

Chip shop manager Michael said “We thought this was a great idea and offers our customers something a bit different and we are teaming up with a great local visitor attraction so it’s a win win for us both!”

The museum is a great place to visit for a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all the family. There are over 20 exhibition rooms as well as outdoor exhibits. Plus, there are three free presentations running throughout the day, one in the WWII Operations Room and one in the Cold War Operations Room and one on the Bloodhound surface to air missile system. You can relive the experience of RAF staff who monitored the skies keeping us safe during the war and during the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

High profile speakers for Sheringham church weekend

‘Stir 19’, a packed weekend of worship and teaching for the whole family is taking place at Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham next month, and will include guest speakers Paul & Priscilla Reid from Belfast Christian Fellowship, and Roy Crowne, National Director of Hope Together.

The church’s popular ‘Stir’ events, where well-known Christian speakers or bands have visited the church on four Sundays throughout the last three summers, have attracted visitors from across the county. This concept has now been expanded to a whole weekend of teaching and worship for this year, which will take place over the May bank holiday weekend of 4 and 5 May.

The programme will start with a bible teaching session on each of the two mornings, led by Paul and Priscilla Reid. The Saturday afternoon seminars will be led by Dan Ward, Lighthouse Community Pastor; Nick Blanch, from Norwich Youth for Christ; and Roy Crowne.

The Sunday afternoon seminars will be led by Ian Savory, Lighthouse Senior Pastor, Carol Woodward, and Priscilla Reid.

The Youth for Christ TRACKS mobile recording studio will be available for young people to visit during the afternoon seminars.

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

Entertaining speakers are often asked to return for a second helping of anecdote and reminiscence, and retired police sergeant and amateur actor Tim Travers returned to Sheringham Stroke Support Group this month to share more stories from his 32 years in the police.

Police work is serious and potentially dangerous but Tim concentrated on the lighter side of his experiences.

Tim was born in Sheringham and joined the police as a cadet at 17 and later specialised to become a member of the search team and diving team. He did his initial training in Norwich and was then moved to Thetford.

held up a milkman at six o’clock in the morning too close to home. He gained little for his audacity, was recognised and apprehended almost immediately.

Some crimes took longer to be reported, children fishing in the river waved merrily at the passing police car and the officers waved cheerfully back. The next milk bills at nearby housed showed exactly how these youngsters were fuelling their energies!

The next move was to north Norfolk where Tim was directed to ‘turn left where the old gate used to be’ and a driver who ran into a bus protested that ‘that bus don’t come this way’!

Tim has been a keen amateur actor specialising in comedy roles, and it shows in his delivery, building up to an anecdote, pausing and then delivering the punch line. We heard of his experience as a newly-fledged copper, approaching a gothic mansion in rain and semi-darkness more appropriate to a remake of The Hound of the Baskervilles, and his doomed solo attempt to return a frisky calf he found frolicking on the highway to its field.

Police experience included spells on security duty at Sandringham. In those days security was undertaken by a sergeant and four constables, all unarmed. Today things are very different. We heard stories involving royalty, corgis and American tourists.

Relations between police and press were mostly good, even if a crime investigation photo captioned ‘police forensic expert carrying evidence’, was of a policeman arriving with the workers’ lunches.

As a child, Peter had a Belgian pen friend and the stamps on these letters provided the basis for a lifetime of collecting foreign stamps.

Over 30 years ago he decided to focus his collection on Belgium, from both the philatelic and historical aspects and his passion for the subject was evident to us Early Belgian stamp from 1865 all! His display started with covers from Peter Watt’s display from the pre-stamp era of postage in the mid 1700s, when Belgium was part of the Austrian Netherlands and not a country in its own right. He showed examples of the first imperforate stamps to be produced and of all subsequent issues up to the end of the first World War.

One anecdote described a road traffic accident where the driver braked to avoid a rabbit, the three following drivers braked too late and a fifth driver swerved to avoid the pile up and killed a rabbit, either the chaos causing bunny or his burrow-mate!

Belgium is well-known as a country that holds major exhibitions, for which special stamps and labels have often been issued. These stamps, plus special railway parcel postage stamps and postage due stamps also formed part of Peter’s excellent display, which he presented with great enthusiasm.

As part of the Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations, all members present were given a specially designed commemorative mug and Peter received one of these too, as well as a certificate for his presentation.

On Tuesday 2 April we had a most interesting talk from Stephen Scott-Fawcett on the subject of “Antarctica - past, present and future”.

As well as being an author and editor of various polar books and academic papers, Stephen is an adviser to the Scott Polar research Institute in Cambridge.

He told us how there is evidence of vegetation in Antarctica’s very distant past when there was apparently a tropical climate, during four ‘green’ periods.

However, he went on to discuss a more recent period, called ‘The Great White’ by early explorers, ie from the mid-19th century onwards. The first explorers investigated some of the coastline (from a distance!) but it was only in 1898 that the first human actually landed there on terra firma. Between then and 1922 people from 49 different nations came to explore and often to lay claim to sections of Antarctica.

Gradually more and more scientific work was done (a period called ‘The Great White Laboratory’) and in 1959 to 1961 the Antarctic Treaty was first signed and then ratified, in order to enable visitors to come and to make further scientific work possible without, in principle, political factors getting in the way. Since 1961 much further scientific work has been done, such as research into the hole in the ozone layer.

Spring is one of those traditional times to take stock. Putting off big decisions can be dangerous. And that’s particularly true with legal decisions that could affect the rest of your life or the lives of members of your family.

Half of people in the country don’t have wills so on their death what happens to their assets is left to the arbitrary “intestacy” rules. Even fewer have a Lasting Power of Attorney so if they become incapable of dealing with their own finances no-one can step in to help.

One in two marriages end in divorce so pre nuptial agreements are becoming an essential part of wedding planning.

Parents are lending money to children and their partners so they can buy a home and get on the property ladder but without their children thinking about what will happen if they split up. The Bank of Mum and Dad are now increasingly seeking a more commercial and less emotional approach to safeguarding financial arrangements for their children - and themselves.

Life is no longer simple! People have extended families. Receive inherited wealth. Live longer! So essential legal planning is an all the year necessity but we leave it to a Spring Clean to think about often difficult and unpalatable things.

John Balls is the speaker on â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Norfolk and the Titanic Sinkingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on 3 May at Sheringham Museum.

John founded the 'Norfolk Titanic Association' in 1996, and it remains a lively and wellsupported group of enthusiasts. He has written two books on the 'Titanic' - 'Titanic - the Norfolk Survivors', and 'Lucky for Some - Titanic's Lifeboat 13'. He has also contributed articles to the magazines of a number of 'Titanic' Societies.

John has given 'Titanic' talks in Belfast, Italy, the USA and Canada, and is speaker in schools, basing his talk on the story of Ruth Becker, aged 12, a passenger in Lifeboat 13.

His main area of research involves the stories of five people from Norfolk who survived the sinking in April, 1912. Their stories add a very human touch to this iconic global tragedy.

Smokers urged to cut risk of home fires

Smokers are being warned about the deadly dangers of the habit - especially when tired – as Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service joins forces with other services for the Fire Kills campaign. Cigarettes and other smoking products cause just over a third of all accidental fire fatalities in the home. Smoking is also the single biggest cause of accidental fires in the home, often because of careless behaviour such as smoking in bed or not taking care after drinking alcohol. And when smokers fall asleep with a lit cigarette in hand, their proximity to the resulting fire seriously lowers their chance of making an escape. Smokers are advised to ‘Put it Out, Right Out’ whenever they light up; to install smoke alarms on every level of the home and to test them regularly. Without a working smoke alarm, you are at least seven times more likely to die in an accidental fire in the home. these simple steps can help prevent a cigarette fire in the home: • Never smoke in bed. Take care when you’re tired – it’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set furniture alight • Never smoke when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If your lit cigarette starts a fire you could be less able to escape.

• Put it out, right out! Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished • Fit a smoke alarm and test it weekly. A working smoke alarm can buy

you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999 • Never leave lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended – they can easily overbalance as they burn down • Use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over easily and is made of a material that won’t burn.

Norfolk’s Chief Fire Officer Stuart Ruff said: "Every five days, someone dies from a fire caused by cigarettes or smoking materials in the UK. Despite a fall in the overall number of fires caused by these products, it’s still the biggest cause of accidental fires in the home. Bad habits such as smoking whilst in bed or under the influence of alcohol increases the risk of falling asleep before you ‘put it out, right out’. Make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them regularly. A working smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape if the worst should happen.”

Dr Louise Smith, Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said: “As well as being a fire risk, smoking remains one of the most important causes of early death and health inequalities in Norfolk.

We have specialist services that can help smokers to quit – Smokefree Norfolk will discuss the best method of quitting with you, come up with a plan and support you throughout your quitting journey.

Terence Blacker in Concert

Sharrington Village Hall presents Terence Blacker in concert on Friday 7 June at 7.30pm.

Terence Blacker is a singer-songwriter whose quirky, offbeat songs of contemporary life have been compared to the work of Jake Thackray, Tom Lehrer and even Jacques Brel. Celebrating the outsider, the misfit and the unseen, his songs range from the openly comic to

the satirical and melancholy.

He has played at folk clubs, festivals and theatres across the country, and took a one-man-show of songs and stories to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. He wrote and presented Taboo-Be-Do!, a two-part history of politically incorrect music, for BBC Radio 4. His third CD Enough About Me, released in 2018, earned enthusiastic reviews in the national and music press.
