Lights Bikes and Lanterns Tribute to Jumbo

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

Sheringham Carnival will be having a Lights, Bikes and Lanterns parade as a tribute to the memory of Graham Curlew (Jumbo) for the Christmas lights switch on this year on Friday 18 November.

Jumbo, who helped many groups in the area as a fundraiser, was keen to organise a fairy light parade at Christmas time. He was described by Chairman Stuart McClean as 'a privilege to know and if the kids were laughing, he was happy.'

Meeting at Tesco at 5pm, the parade will leave shortly after at 5.15pm. There will be Father Christmas, Panto, Primary School Choir with handbells and Ukulele club, Chamber of Trade's best dressed window competition with 3 prizes and the countdown at 6.30pm.

There will also be a hog roast, roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, snow machine and canons.

There is a parade starting at the Cremer Street, HQ of the Salvation Army, at 10.30am. Can I ask for any ex sailors/ officers to come and join me? This of course also applies to soldiers and airmen, and Northern Ireland to the Gulf and Afghanistan veterans will be particularly welcome.

Dear Residents of Curtis Lane and Beeston Common areas of Sheringham

Over the past few years, there has been increasing concern over the escalating numbers of vehicles using these roads and the speed at which some people drive.

We have tried without much success to get some solution but at last I have spoken to the Police and have a reference number so we can write to (in the first instance) our Town Clerk in order to get the ball rolling and to have the matter properly investigated.

There is a committee called SNAP (Safer Neighbourhood Action Partnership) whose next meeting is on Thursday 17 November at 7pm at The Community Centre in Holway Road. It would be really helpful if as many concerned residents as possible could attend this meeting where the matter will be on their agenda for discussion.

It would also be helpful if you would write to Denise Medler, Town Clerk, Town Hall, Church Street, Sheringham, NR26 8QS or email her at shercouncil@btconnect.com.

New 2016 Sir William Paston Scholars receive their awards

In 2006 the Trustees of the Paston Foundation created a scholarship scheme to mark Paston’s 400th birthday, bearing the name of our founder, Sir William Paston. Ten years on, the awards are still an important part of the Sixth Form College.

This year, 25 scholarships worth £500 were awarded to new gifted and talented students.

The Paston Sixth Form College students study A levels and BTEC courses as a preliminary to going to a top university. This year, 25% of students at Paston went on to top Universities, including three going on to Oxbridge. In the current year, 18 students have sent applications into Oxbridge.

The scholars had a special lunch to receive their scholarships. At the lunch, Richard Dennison, Corporation and Paston College Foundation member, presented the awards.

The students use the awards in a range of different ways to support their learning at Paston.

Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “It is good to remind students of the legacy left by Sir William Paston. Again, this year, we have a large number of students gaining the awards”.

Deer’s Glade Fireworks Spectacular This year’s charity fireworks display at Deers Glade Caravan and Camping Park in Hanworth will take place on Saturday 5 November and is set to be the biggest event yet, falling as it does on Bonfire Night.

Once again the Attew family who own the caravan and camping site will be working with local Cromer charity About with Friends to put on a memorable evening.

The event takes place at the Deer’s Glade campsite in White Post Road, Hanworth. Gates open 6pm and the candlelit procession leaves the main campsite at 6.30pm. The bonfire will be lit at 7pm with the fireworks starting at 7.30 and lasting for about 30 minutes.

Although the fireworks are the pinnacle of the evening, the unique candlelit walk through the

woods between the main campsite and Deer’s Glade is much loved by children and adults alike.

About With Friends, who support adults with learning disabilities, believe in integrating their members at the heart of the community and are not just silent partners at the event. They run the food and drink marquee and provide a quality menu of hot food, snacks and drinks.

Cooked and sold by members, staff, volunteers and supporters the group will serve some 2000 people in the space of two hours making it an extremely busy evening. This year they will be offering Hog Roast rolls, superior hot dogs, vegetarian options, beer and soft drinks, mulled wine and cider and much more. There will also be glow sticks on sale. A family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) is a bargain £14 or a single ticket is £4.

The Attew family who run the campsite and organise the display have close connections with the group and have run this event in partnership with them since 2011. Insurance cover for the event is being sponsored by NFU Mutual Insurance once again.

In Every Corner Sing

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to St Peter’s Sheringham on Saturday 26 November at 7.30 pm for a delightful programme of quintessential English choral and orchestral music.

Under the direction of their new Musical Director, David Ballard, and accompanied by a string orchestra they will perform works by Vaughan Williams, Stanford, Parry, Finzi and Holst. The choir will be joined by acclaimed Baritone soloist Dhilan Gnanadurai and accompanied by pianist Anthony Gowing.

Choral items include Ralph Vaughan William’s sublime Five Mystical Songs, Charles Villiers Stanford’s stirring Songs of the Fleet and Charles Hubert Parry’s much loved Blest Pair of Sirens. Alongside these the specially invited string orchestra (leader Keith Hobday) will perform Gustav Holst’s delightful St Paul’s Suite and Gerald Finzi’s beautiful but rarely performed Eclogue.

The title of this concert is taken from a line in the well-known poem by George Herbert “Let all the world in Every Corner Sing” which feature in the closing Antiphon in Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs.

1. Pre-heat oven to 190C/375F gas 5. Line two large baking trays with parchment.

2. Using an electric hand whisk, beat the butter, sugar and lemon zest, together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

3. Beat in the flour, almonds and cardamom until the mixture is well combined and comes together to form a stiff dough.

4. Roll the dough in 24 balls and place 12 on each baking tray – make sure you leave space between each one.

5. Bake a tray at a time for 12 minutes until the cookies are pale golden brown.

6. Leave to cool for a few minutes then transfer to a wire rack. They will crisp as they cool.

Store in an air tight tin. Eat within 7 days.

Love for Leo

With kind weather and so many people in the town, the Love for Leo tombola during the Forties weekend was very successful.

With the kind permission of ‘the kitchen’, there was plenty of room for tables to display the prizes. Thanks to friends who donated prizes - over 100 prizes were available to be won, all good quality and well received by those who won them - especially the bottle of champagne! A grand total of £315 was raised. This will go toward helping Norfolk children with cerebral palsy. With the funds doing well, it is now possible to make larger donations which are very gratefully received. Many thanks to all who helped in any way.

On 12 November there will be the Lights Up Variety Show at the Little Theatre - two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening raising money for the Christmas lights and Love for Leo.

This is a fun show with local talent compered by well known radio personality Greg Powles. There will be a raffle at both performances in aid of Love for Leo, with excellent prizes in the spirit of Christmas.

Can pay, won’t pay

historically been a clear distinction. In the past, tax avoidance has been viewed as a lawful means of reducing a person’s tax liability. It has been a long-established principle since the 1936 case of IRC -v- Duke of Westminster. This has been the subject of much public criticism in recent times, as well-known entertainers and large multinational corporations seek to mitigate their tax liabilities, acting entirely within the law. The use by politicians of the word ‘morality’ has crept into the tax arena.

The utterances of Donald J. Trump have once again brought the question of whether paying tax is optional/stupid/moral into the arena. Or, put the other way, whether not paying tax is optional/clever/immoral.

The distinction between the terms ‘tax avoidance’ and ‘tax evasion’ is becoming ever more distorted. The terms are now often used interchangeably, altering what has

(with the help of his professional advisers) would argue (Trump-like) that he is cleverly arranging his affairs ‘tax-efficiently’.

Offences of fraudulently evading various taxes are not limited to prescribed law, but are retained within the common law offence of cheating the public revenue. The courts have prison-sentencing powers up to life imprisonment in England and Wales (but not in Scotland!). This broad offence dates back to medieval times. Most ‘cheating’ offences now fall under the Theft Act 1968 which created the offence of obtaining property by deception. This offence has been retained for cases where there may not be a specific statutory tax-evasion offence, and most likely will be reserved for highprofile cases involving scams or well-known personalities.

The international objective is floridly described as eliminating tax avoidance and ‘aggressive’ tax schemes in the ‘dark corners’ of our financial system and removing the ‘veil of secrecy’ under which criminals operate. The language has a strangely JK Rowling quality to it.

On Sunday 9 October, the North East Norfolk District Scouts Top Awards Celebration took place at the Bure Valley Railway in Aylsham, courtesy of the Bure Valley Railway Team.

Forty young people, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, received their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, and a Young Leader from 1st Aylsham Group, Rebecca Morgan, received her very special Young Leader Belt, for completing all of her Young Leader training, from District Young Leader Manager, Tom Hadley (himself a Platinum Chief Scout Award Holder).

Parents and family members also attended. Two groups of Beavers,

Cubs and Scouts were each given a fascinating insight into the workings of steam engines and a tour of the engine sheds and workshops, and several of the youngsters had a chance to be drivers and firemen, and of course to blow the whistle several times!

They were also able to enjoy Thomas the Tank Engine displays, have photos taken with the many steam engines and take a 45 minute train ride through to Wroxham Station, where they were given a special tour of the signal box before their

return cruise on the steam train back to Aylsham for tea, cakes and their presentations.

This year District Commissioner Paul Henriksen was joined by newly qualified Bure Valley Driver, 25 year old Scott Bunting, who presented the Certificates and special ‘Bure Valley’ goodie bags to the young people. Scott qualified as a driver in April 2016 and has been volunteering with the railway for the past four years.

Holt Country Park car park machine vandalised A car park ticket machine has been vandalised in a failed robbery.

The machine, which is still in working order, was damaged between Sunday 16 October and Monday morning 17 October.

Public vote gives Little Theatre big arts award

The people have voted – and given Sheringham Little Theatre a prestigious arts award. The venue is celebrating being named best small organisation in the EDP People’s Choice section of The Norfolk Arts Awards.

Delighted director Debbie Thompson collected the accolade at a ceremony in Norwich Cathedral’s Hostry last month. She said: “We are absolutely delighted. This is amazing for us.

Because it was a public vote is means a lot.”

The theatre’s work staging a professional panto, one of the few remaining summer repertory drama seasons, films, live arts events screenings, a range of community, amateur and youth productions and its busy Hub coffee bar were highlighted during the awards evening.

The seaside venue was up against fellow finalists Norwich Arts Centre and the city’s Maddermarket Theatre. Mrs Thompson said the award was a reward for the hard work of the tireless army of 86 volunteers at the theatre. It is hard work, but we are almost self-sustaining, as we are only 10% funded now.”

She received her award from Emma Knights the Eastern Daily Press arts correspondent at the ceremony.

SHERINGHAM THEATRE SUCCESS ‘BRACKEN MOOR’ by Alexei Kaye Campbell

Once again Sheringham can feel proud of both its Little Theatre and the Cromer & Sheringham Operatic & Dramatic Society. They combined to present Bracken Moor, the extraordinary stage-play by Alexei Campbell.

The story is set in the Yorkshire drawing-room of industrialist Harold and Elizabeth Pritchard, early in 1937 to judge from allusions to Mrs Simpson and General Franco, as 140 workers face the sack because machinery is required to keep their mines going. The actors worked well to hold the audience during the author’s preliminary dialogue, which ranged from social Darwinism to Freudian psychoanalysis.

After that political prolegomena, the plot thunders into the personal agony that has haunted Elizabeth mentally for ten years, and rushes literally towards an uncanny supernatural resolution. Their son Edgar had suffered an agonising lingering death on a lonely moor, but his ghost returns by controlling the voice of his intimate boyhood friend Terence, now a mystically inclined young man, who has arrived with his own parents as guests. The diverse impact on the two mothers was skilfully portrayed by Janet Hignett and Chrissie Robertson.

Though no-one should be singled out from an exceptionally competent cast, Harry Wilson as the hard-headed and dominant Harold, and Zachary Green as the possessed and convulsive Terence, gave an impressively synergic performance, ably directed by Kirk Wills.

The Baring Masonic Lodge Beer Festival held in Sheringham in September was well attended and, after overheads, a grand sum of £1000 was raised for local charities around the Cromer and Sheringham area.

The money will be donated in the local area by the Worshipful Master, Roy Chadwick.

Organisers would like to express their thanks to the 30 commercial enterprises and individuals who supported the cause.

REDWINGS PAYS TRIBUTE TO ‘HERO’ HORSE OLIVER

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has said a sad goodbye to a very special horse who was a beloved companion to his blind best friend for seven years.

Bay cob Oliver had lived with blind Clydesdale cross Boo near the charity’s horse hospital in Norfolk. Oliver, who was 28 and had lived at Redwings since 1992, formed an immediate bond with sweet-natured Boo when he arrived in 2009 having survived a shocking attack.

Boo, 19, who has previously lost one eye to cancer, was shot at point blank range, which resulted in the loss of his remaining eye. Sadly, no-one was ever prosecuted for this despicable act of cruelty but Boo was welcomed in to the Sanctuary where he could receive the specialist care he would need for the rest of his life.

Loyal Oliver became Boo’s most trusted friend, guiding him around their field and accompanying him for every veterinary check-up, helping him rebuild his confidence and giving him the new lease of life he so desperately deserved.

The pair remained inseparable until the morning of 6 October when, tragically, it was discovered Oliver was Oliver (right) with his friend Boo suffering from a severe impaction colic and was in a lot of pain. Due to his age, surgery was not an option and the heart-breaking decision was taken to put Oliver to sleep to save him from further suffering. Boo stayed by his side.

Since Oliver’s passing, the Redwings veterinary team has been closely monitoring Boo and he has been introduced to a new companion, a piebald cob called Flynn, also 19, who is helping him come to terms with his loss.

The pair are currently getting to know each other in the stables at the Redwings horse hospital and initial signs suggest that the two are striking-up a new, close friendship.

Lynn Cutress, Redwings’ Chief Executive, said “Oliver was not just a beloved member of the Redwings family for almost 25 years, but he was also a hero. When poor Boo’s world was turned upside down, Oliver gave him a reason to trust again and a chance to enjoy a new life at the Sanctuary. We’re very happy and relieved to see Boo recovering from his loss and adjusting to his new companion so positively and we hope Flynn will become just as good a friend to Boo as Oliver had been for so long.

Nothing will ever replace Oliver of course, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

The Redwings veterinary team will continue to give Boo all the extra love and specialist care he needs as he builds his new relationship with Flynn.

Enjoyed your summer? Now it is time to clear up sun-damaged skin

A nice tan can make your skin glow in the summer, but as the golden colour fades our skin is left a little more damaged and we enter autumn looking a little older than last year. As we age, these factors take an increasing toll on our skin, and the effects are especially noticeable on our faces, neck, hands and décolletage.

This is why autumn is a good time to assess your skin care regimen. As temperatures drop and the air becomes drier, your skin naturally loses more moisture, especially when the central heating kicks in.

We see patients present with dry, wrinkled, uneven and sun-damaged skin. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take and simple procedures are available that protect your skin, correct issues resulting from sun damage, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The following products and procedures will help boost your skin’s health and appearance and carry you with confidence into the winter months.

Use sun protection creams with good SPF. Perhaps the best anti-aging products available today are those that contain some kind of retinoid.

This is a class of vitamin A derivatives that really do help to improve the appearance of your skin. You can also treat mild cases at home by using facial cleansers and creams containing miniscule “grains” to exfoliate and mimic the effects of microdermabrasion. Look for glycolic acid in cleansers and peels to help smooth out your complexion. For better results you can try these cost effective procedures of microdermabrasion, gycolic peels and LED light in the clinic also.

You might also consider IPL and laser photo rejuvenation and skin toning.

This virtually painless, non-invasive treatment addresses a variety of skin issues from sun damage and uneven skin tone to hyperpigmentation. It is a very effective procedure for evening out skin tone and reducing signs of sun damage such as brown spots and freckles.

A combination of aging, sun exposure and lack of hydration can result in dry skin that makes fine lines, wrinkles and other imperfections more noticeable. Over time, the skin tends to visibly lack fullness and elasticity.

Public Inquiry – Pond Farm, Bodham and Selbrigg Farm, Holt

A Public Inquiry will be held this month into two wind turbine applications which had been turned down by North Norfolk District Council.

The public inquiry, which will be held in the Council Chamber at North Norfolk District Council’s offices at Holt Road, Cromer, is due to start at 10am on 22 November and last for seven days.

Genatec Ltd had asked for planning permission to put up a single wind turbine, measuring up to 66 metres tall, at Pond Farm, Bodham, Holt along with a single storey substation and access tracks.

Selbrigg Generation Ltd had requested planning permission to put up a single wind turbine measuring up to 78 metres, an access track, substation and a temporary meteorological mast on land at Selbrigg Farm, Hempstead, Holt.

A planning inspector appointed by the Secretary of State will lead the public inquiry into the two appeals. Members of the public are invited to attend the inquiry and can, if the inspector allows, express their views.

Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning said “It’s vital that the local issues and concerns are fully taken into account when deciding planning applications and it’s my sincere hope that the public inquiry respects the views of the communities and upholds the decisions of the local planning authority, who are well placed to be able to understand what is best for their area and reflect local feelings.”

A last minute change of speaker meant that the final meeting of 2016 was a very interesting talk by Peter Skeggs-Gooch of Thorncroft Clematis.

This family run company based at Reymerton, Norfolk are specialists in clematis and have won nine gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show.

At the end of the evening, the Chairman outlined the programme for 2017 which will commence with the AGM and fish and chip supper on 16 March. Speakers next year will include Jane Lister from Hoecroft Nursery who had also invited members to visit her garden and nursery; Richard Clark an expert on carnivorous plants and a wildlife expert from the National Trust to talk about what creatures we can find in our gardens. Further speakers were being arranged and with the Spring and Summer shows, the annual quiz with Cromer and Hoveton and a visit to Edgefield Nursery for a special open evening with coffee and cake it promises to be an interesting year.

Consultation on the Draft Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report North Norfolk District Council is preparing a new Local Plan.

The Plan will include new planning policies (used in the determination of planning applications) and will allocate areas of land to address the development needs of the District for the period 2016-2036.

As part of the preparation of the emerging Local Plan, an appraisal of the social, environmental and economic impact of the plan must be carried out. This appraisal is known as a Sustainability Appraisal (SA).

The SA will also meet the requirements for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the Local Plan.

In order to identify the range and level of detail of the information to be included in the SA, a Scoping Report has been produced. For a period of 6 weeks between Monday 10 October 2016 and Monday 21 November 2016, the Council are consulting with Historic England, Natural England, the Environment Agency and other relevant bodies on the content of the Scoping Report. Whilst this is primarily a technical consultation with the statutory bodies listed above, other organisations and individuals may also submit representations.

North Norfolk District Council supports primary school Eco Group

Litter pickers and bin bag hoops donated to schoolchildren who take care of environment

Sheringham Community Primary School has been given 10 litter pickers and 10 bin bag hoops from NNDC to help them look after the environment.

The school’s Eco Group carries out weekly community litter picks and won a Total Green School Award earlier this year.

Head teacher Sue Brady said “We would like to say a huge thank you to the District Council for donating the litter pickers and hoops to our Eco Club. We encourage the children to take care of themselves, each other and their environment. They perform their regular litter picks around our school grounds and are now aiming to set an example to the whole community through their litter picking around the public places in Sheringham. They are very enthusiastic and know how valuable their contribution is towards keeping the town neat and clean. We are really grateful that with your help, we can now pick up more litter and hopefully encourage others to do the same.”

This year the school hopes to win another Total Green School Award.

Dudgeon Community Fund awards further grants in Norfolk

At a meeting earlier last month, the Dudgeon Community Fund paneltaking awarded bookin a total of ÂŁ126,500 to 21 community projects in Norfolk.

For the last 18 months, work has progressed installing the underground onshore electricity cable for the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm from the coastal village of Weybourne in North Norfolk to Necton, near Swaffham in the Breckland district of Norfolk. A total of 11 community projects along this cable route received grants, with a further five projects being supported in and around Necton where the construction of wind farm's onshore electricity substation is nearing completion.

Around half of these grant awards are associated with the upkeep and improvement of village halls and community centres, facilities which are a very important part of community life in Norfolk's villages.

In the port town of Great Yarmouth where the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm Operations Centre has just been completed, five organisations which provide community support to individuals and family groups were awarded grants.

The new bases were laid and tiled and the new pens have arrived and, at the time of writing, electricity has been reconnected at one site, and the cats should be back inside by the time you read this. I have been to see these pens today and the photo which accompanies this article does not do them justice. The pens are much bigger than our original ones, have non slip tiles on the floors and will be very easy to clean. There have been a few challenges at the other site but hopefully the electrical work will be completed soon and these pens too will be back in operation.

Although we still have several cats to catch at the feral colony mentioned last time, we are getting close to catching all the cats at another colony, with only one, or possibly two, more cats to catch. However, the last ones are always the hardest as they will be wary of going into one of the traps, having seen several companions caught in this way. Results are often achieved in these circumstances if the trap is taken away for a few days, but there are no guarantees. Two of our fosterers have been actively involved in catching the cats in this colony as they live close by.

Unfortunately we, ourselves, are not always able to help in this way due to distances involved and rely on cat caring people to help. We have now been advised of another colony which needs our help and are investigating the possibility of helping cats in yet another area. It takes

Norfolk Jazz

Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) continues on Sunday 20 November when Tony Parsons takes his quartet to the venue. The music starts at 7.30pm.

Tony is a classically trained musician who also flourishes in the world of jazz. He started playing at the age of 13, studied at the Royal College of Music and served in the Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards.

He played with Sadlers Wells Opera Orchestra and the Halle Orchestra. He was co-principal trombone of the BBC Symphony orchestra and trombone professor at the London College of Music. An exciting, enjoyable and enviable career.

Tony still plays across the musical spectrum and collaborates with local and regional musicians on a regular basis. On 20 November he will be playing with Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar and banjo) and Tony Jullings (bass). Tim and Peter are known at the Hub through their appearances with the Norfolk Jazz Quartet.

Local walkers set the pace in Brittany

In October 2015, walkers from the Morbihan region of southern Brittany came to north Norfolk to stay with hosts in the area and to enjoy inland and coastal walks with local walkers.

This October, a group of north Norfolk ‘Ramblers’, joined by members of the SheringhamMuzillac Twinning Association, left Sheringham for a reciprocal visit to Muzillac.

Flying from London City Airport to Nantes on 2 October, the party arrived in Muzillac to an evening reception organised by their French hosts, and prepared to explore the area over the following four days.

Inland, and the hills around Rochefort-enTerre, on the river Arz, provided a picturesque backdrop for a day spent hiking through heather, gorse and granite, in a land dominated by superstition and rumours of witchcraft even into the 20C. The walkers took in beautiful rural scenery and then the town itself, often celebrated as one of the most beautiful in France. It is a well-known ville fleurie owing to the ubiquitous ornate gardens and floral street displays.

Time and again during the walks, the guides mentioned the Celtic roots of ‘Bretagne’, a huge area whose population was swelled many centuries ago by settlers from our own land, ‘Grande Bretagne’. In particular, it is believed Cornish families fled to Brittany seeking to evade their ruthless Roman overlords in England, taking their Cornish language which developed into Breton.
