Sheringham Carnival proudly presents Jade Roberts as Carnival Queen 2016 and Emma Louise Glover as Senior Attendant. Jade is 26 years old and currently a mum and a child minder.

20 year old Emma has only recently become a mum and works at The Two Lifeboats.

Both girls have lived in Sheringham all their lives and are looking forward to their duties and responsibilities during Carnival Week. It is an important role, where they will take part in children's activities, visit nursing homes, judge the 'mini' Carnival Prince and Princess Competition and accompany the Mayor on his visits. Unfortunately, the third attendant resigned shortly after selection for personal reasons but, due to the carnival programme deadline, it was decided against re-advertising. We welcome both girls to Sheringham Carnival!

Colour Me Vintage

Sheringham now has its own pop up vintage shop to complement the existing vintage and retro shops already in town.

‘Colour Me Vintage’, run by Jeannie and Terry Read, is open until late September and evolved from Jeannie’s keen interest in retro style fashion and memorabilia.

Having been involved in Vintage Fairs and events for a number of years, the exciting opportunity to have a pop up shop in her home town for the summer was too good to miss. Lesley Garrett owner of ‘Blossom’s Re-loved’ selling painted furniture also shares the shop with Jeannie and has some beautiful items for sale.

Apart from an exciting and colourful array of ladies fashion from the 40s, 50s and 60s, including fabulous hats and accessories, Colour Me Vintage has a selection of menswear specifically for the same era. The shop is jammed with an eclectic mix of furniture, china, kitchenware, records and memorabilia and an atmosphere that will transport you back in time.

Colour Me Vintage is on Lifeboat Plain at the bottom of Gun Street and is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am until 4.30pm including Bank Holidays until the end of September.

The Romans are coming! The Romans are coming!

Over recent years, Sheringham has seen a number of bygone ages come to town including the 40s era and the Vikings, but now it is the turn of the Romans, or at least The Sheringham Players with their summer production of ‘Up Pompeii’.

The play runs from Wednesday 15 June to Saturday 18 June with a Saturday matinee performance, at The Sheringham Little Theatre, and tickets are now available from the Theatre Box Office.

The play, based on the original characters devised by Talbot Rothwell and Sid Colin for the very successful 1970's TV comedy, was written by Miles Tredinnick, after Frankie Howard asked him to write a brand new stage play based on the show.

Frankie Howard, who played Lurcio the slave, planned to do a UK tour and then perform it in the West End, but when he was then asked to reprise his role as Pseudolus in ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’ at the Piccadilly Theatre, ‘Up Pompeii’ was temporarily put on the back burner.

A few years later, theatre producer Bruce James heard about the play and produced a UK tour starring Damian Williams as Lurcio.

This hilarious romp through ancient Pompeii sees Lurcio's attempt to deliver his prologue and begin proceedings, but he is quickly caught up in the myriad of sexual liaisons in all quarters of his master’s house. Why does Ludicrus not leave for the Senate meeting in Rome? Why does his wife return so quickly from the country? Who will take care of the escaped slave girl, Voluptua, and will Nausius’s love poetry improve? Whilst growing chaos ensues, an increasing rumbling is heard in the distance – what could that possibly be?

The play featuring some familiar Sheringham Players, and a few new faces, follows on from their very successful spring production and promises to be a riot from start to finish with classic innuendoes, saucy costumes, double entendres, mix ups, misunderstandings and mayhem.

Toastmaster’s Success

North Norfolk Speakers Club contestant Paul Rosier won the annual Toastmasters Area International Speech Contest, this year hosted by Mildenhall Speakers Club on 5 April.

Having won the North Norfolk Speakers Club International Speech contest, Paul delivered an excellent speech entitled ‘Just a Minute’, winning first place despite stiff competition.

The event was well attended and enjoyed by members from all area clubs with Mildenhall Speakers Club providing very welcoming hospitality and delicious refreshment.

Branch President, Air Commodore Tom Benson RAF (retired) awarded the President’s Cup for 2015 to the Branch Banner Bearer Ray Loake for his outstanding contribution to the Branch.

Ray and his wife Margaret have been not only loyal supporters of the RAFA but after nine years service in the RAF, Ray was also a volunteer with the Air Training Corps for over 20 years.

I celebrated my 80th birthday on Tuesday 19 April with a buffet party at The Robin Hood in town.

We had a really great time – the buffet was extremely good and the service we received was unbelievable.

Asparagus and parmesan risotto

What a lovely time of year here in Cromer, with the blossom through on the apple trees and the new herb garden flourishing under the watchful eyes of Estate Manager Nigel and Head of Herbs Ann Graveling. The chefs wander through the Orangery to harvest the fresh leaves and flowers (without stopping at the bar of course…!) and get them straight onto the plates and into the restaurant. Delicious. We are into the full swing of the season now, with very busy dining rooms throughout the week. (We’ve also retained our two AA Rosettes for the next year, which is a huge compliment for our team here). If you fancy dropping in for dinner I would be great to see you – but it’s always

2 tbsp olive oil Table Spoon of butter 1 onion, finely chopped 350g risotto rice 250ml glass white wine 750ml vegetable stock, hot Bunch of asparagus, trimmed Pared zest and juice of 1 lemon 75g Parmesan, finely grated

1. Heat the oil and butter in a pan over a low heat. Add the onion and gently fry for 5 minutes. Increase the heat to medium, add the rice and cook for a few minutes. Add the wine and stir until absorbed.

2. Gradually add the stock, stirring and allowing each addition to absorb before adding the next. Blanch the asparagus in a pan of boiling water until just tender, refresh under cold water, then slice into lengths.

Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios

For two weeks every May/June, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrate the county’s artists and their creativity by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell, and talk about their work. It gives visitors the chance to experience new art, meet artists, and to buy original artworks directly from their creators.

North Norfolk Organisation for the Visual Arts (NOVA) was formed in 2000 as a liaison group between the Open Studios organisation and the artists of North Norfolk, hence its title. Membership is continually rising and is currently in excess of 60 artists, covering most if not all mediums.

‘Middle of NovaWhere’ is a collective of artists from the North Norfolk Organisation of Visual Artists (NOVA). For 2016 they have set up a group exhibition as part of the Open Studios event, in the wonderful setting of Thorpe Market Church, to give visitors the chance to experience a diverse amount of talent in one location.

Often the artists have little space to show people around their own studios and as a solitary artist they find the two weeks of ‘NovaWhere’ Open Studios a great opportunity to be inspired by their co-exhibitors, or by the setting in which they show their work. Artists taking part are David Cottrell, Lesley Ash, Susanne Lakin, John Rance, Leslie Hawkes Nockels, Shane (arTEEsane) and Chris Sharpe.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 28 May – Saturday 12 June, open daily 10am to 5pm. Free Entry. Refreshments available.

Charity concert will get the feet tapping

A group of three hugely talented, Norfolk-based young singer/musicians have teamed up with Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club to present an exciting charity concert in Cromer at the end of May.

Led by Rebecca Hunt, accompanied by pianist Hannah Watson, together with Claire Lawrence and her band, the concert will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Monday, 30 May at 7.30pm.

All three performers are highly qualified and combine a love of jazz, pop and classical music, which will result in a lively mix to suit all tastes and is sure to be a big attraction.

The programme, full details of which will be available shortly, will be two distinct halves. Rebecca Hunt, who graduated in music from Canterbury Christ Church University will sing a wide variety of popular and classical songs from Benjamin Britten, Gershwin, Puccini, Strauss and Lehar. Rebecca is in regular demand as a soloist and recitalist - her role also including opera and chorus work. Locally, she will be playing in the Imperial Vienna Orchestra’s production at the Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich in December. Accompanying pianist, Hannah Watson is also a music teacher and choir director working in London and Norwich. Highlights of her work include solo,

On the afternoon of 14 May between 3pm and 5pm, Sheringham and District Society will be hosting the following activities in the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre and Peter Coke Shell Gallery as part of the North Norfolk Stories Festival. Charlotte Upcher will be on hand to talk about her reasons for commissioning Sheringham’s first lifeboat, the Augusta, in 1838 and Mrs Caroline Upcher (Charlotte’s daughter-in-law) will talk about the second lifeboat - the Henry Ramey Upcher, in service from 1894 to 1935. Claire Lawrence’s selection is described as ‘infused with infectious foot-tapping jazz with a twist of pop’. It combines the 20s era with some current hits with Ella Fitzgerald prominent. Claire is already known locally following her music scholarship at Gresham’s School where she became head chorister and then head vocalist in the department jazz band. She subsequently gained a first at York in Jazz Vocal Performance before graduating in music in 2013.

“This year’s charity concert is a compete departure from the previous organ concerts”, said Rotarian, Alan Hill. “We are very fortunate to book these young musicians and the nature of the programme has all the makings of a very lively evening. It could be one of our best events so far”. Honeymoon couple donate wedding money to Cromer RNLI

John and Carole Cheshire, who hail from Nottingham, were married last month after many years together. The couple, both in their seventies, had been together for many years but decided to tie the knot whilst on holiday in Venice last year.

A poem was used in the wedding invitations which included the lines: ‘We support those who give their time for free To save people in distress upon the sea The RNLI is such a worthy cause So please donate without a pause’

Carole had proposed to John on three successive Leap Years but with no success, then whilst they were on a gondola last year, John popped the question.

A donation of £300 was handed over to a representative of RNLI Cromer on Wednesday 13 April by the honeymooning couple.

Having both been married before and with their house furnished with all they need, they decided to ask wedding guests to give donations to the RNLI.

2484 food parcels distributed by Cromer & District Food Bank last year Over 2484 three day emergency food supplies were provided to local people by Cromer & District foodbank in the 2015/16 financial year, compared to 2188 in 2014/15. In 2015/16 39% were children. The top three reasons for foodbank referral were benefit delay, low income and debt. Over the last year, local people donated 25 tonnes of food to Cromer & District Foodbank, and over 100 people volunteered. Local schools, businesses and faith groups have provided vital support to the foodbank, enabling us to give three days’ nutritionally balanced food and support to people in crisis. As well as providing emergency food, Cromer & District foodbank provides essentials like washing powder, nappies and hygiene products to families who are struggling, as well as signposting them to other services in the local area. Cromer & District foodbank are partnering with Citizens Advice to provide additional services such as welfare advice, budgeting help and debt support at the foodbank itself, helping people to break out of crisis. Trusts have received all sorts of bad press over the last few weeks. They have become emblematic of underhand arrangements designed to deprive HM Treasury of their dues by those more than able to pay.

Let us examine some of the common misunderstandings.

• Trusts are only for the wealthy: wrong.

• Trusts are a way of concealing the true ownership : ah well, there is more than a grain of truth in this; but the purpose of setting up a trust is often primarily protective and is usually with the best intentions.

• Trusts are for avoiding tax : generally, this is not the case. Trusts have their own tax system which, put simply, often taxes them as severely as the very highest earners. If the income is paid out to beneficiaries, then usually they can claim back that higher rate tax so the income they receive is taxed at the same level as their own income.

What is certain is that trusts are complicated and the law behind them is often misunderstood or poorly grasped, including by financial journalists eager for a quick headline.

So, why create a trust, if not for nefarious reasons?

The best and most frequent reason is to leave assets, often by Will on death, to children, the young or financially-immature. This way the funds can be used to help with their upbringing or education, at the discretion of those with their best interests at heart. Often, the funds are held back until they reach not just 18 or 21 but more often 25. I have seen ‘vesting ages’ of as late as 30, where the parent or grandparent fears for the child and/or there is much growing up to be done. In the meantime, the trustees can make payments to or for the benefit of the eventual recipient.

Indeed, trusts can be a way of continuing to exercise control ‘from the

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING SHOW Congratulations to all the members of the society who managed to find daffodils and other flowers for our Spring Show in this unusually early season.

The weather at this time of the year is always unpredictable and agreeing show dates, which have to be booked well in advance, is one of the biggest challenges to the committee. The Royal Horticultural Society gives advice on how to time a local flower show and says that the first necessity is to ‘consider the cropping season in the district’ which is not terribly helpful with daffodils blooming as early as Christmas this year.

High Kelling Parish Council held a Community Litter Pick on Sunday 17 April.

The event was well attended – more than a dozen residents turned out to tidy up the roads and paths in the village.

A mound of bin bags full of rubbish was collected and piled up for the District Council’s contractors to remove.

Unique and beautiful cushions inspired by the Norfolk landscape to go on show

Stunning cushions inspired by some of Norfolk's most beautiful vistas will go on show at a unique exhibition later this month.

The event is part of a nationwide collaboration between the National Trust and the Embroiderers' Guild to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, who was responsible for the design of many of the charity's most stunning gardens.

The Spirit of Felbrigg Landscape exhibition features more than 40 beautiful cushions especially created by local textile artists and stitchers from across Norfolk.

Organised by the Norwich branch of the Embroiderers' Guild, the exhibition will see the custom-made creations displayed around the famous National Trust property which inspired them.

During the exhibition, which runs from Saturday, 30 April to Wednesday 29 June some of the artists who created the cushions will also be demonstrating their skills to visitors.

On Wednesday 25 May and Sunday 12 June exhibition goers will be able to meet and see adult stitchers from the Guild in action, while on 2 June a special half-term event will be held

At Felbrigg, the gardens are thought to have been influenced by Suffolk-born and Norwicheducated Humphry Repton, who lived nearby. Repton is often regarded as the spiritual heir to Brown, and one of the last great English landscape designers. The diverse cushions produced for the exhibition reflect many aspects of the Felbrigg estate including its formal lawns and borders, its woodland, and the Grade II listed walled kitchen garden, as well as the surrounding north Norfolk landscape.

Herd of mammoths spotted in Sheringham! from North Norfolk District Council, in partnership with The Sheringham Society.

Mural showcases life-sized mammoths that once roamed North Norfolk coast.

The promenade wall in Sheringham is now home to a mural depicting Neolithic life, including a herd of life-sized mammoths.

Local artist David Barber has volunteered his time to create the extraordinary tribute to the Deep History Coast with £500 funding for materials

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture said “The District Council is proud to have been able to fund such an impressive artwork and support David Barber in this project. The mural isn’t even finished yet and already it’s the talk of the town. It is a real boost to the Deep History Coast and Sheringham itself.”

The mural was inspired by the excavation in 1995 of the 700,000-year-old skeleton of the West Runton steppe mammoth.

The 13-foot tall skeleton is the oldest ever found in the UK and the largest nearlycomplete mammoth skeleton known.

The mural project includes education outreach so school children can take part in painting sessions. In addition, there will be talks about the Deep History Coast sharing information on the local ancient environment and prehistory of Britain. in Wroxham simultaneously.”

Spring Bank Holiday Weekend, 28th - 30th May 2016 will be a busy time for The Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge steam railway.

In addition, the restored Wroxham Signal Box will open to visitors at Wroxham Station, providing unparalleled views of the comings and goings of both the Bure Valley and mainline railway.

All available engines, coaches and rolling stock will be action. There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. To keep younger visitors entertained there will a competition on the train journey, with a free prize for every correct entry.

The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Sheringham History Group

Sheringham History Group returned to the Mo Museum on 6 April for the AGM Meeting.

This was followed by a talk by Mo Museum Manager, Philip Miles. The talk was ‘Plans for the Mo Building Extension’.

The current museum was funded and built between 2004 and 2009. The funds came from the sale of cottages housing a small collection from Sheringham's history along with a £780,000 Lottery Fund Grant. The Mo contains original fishing boats, lifeboats and artefacts depicting the proud history of Sheringham. It was opened in 2010 by the Duke of Kent. When The Atlantic 75 Manchester Unity of Oddfellows Lifeboat retired from the RNLI in 2012 it was due to be scrapped. The Oddfellows, the original purchaser and The Mo Museum intervened to save her for the town. 'Nick, the farmer' kindly agreed to store the lifeboat. The Mo Museum used this opportunity to raise funds for a much needed Education Centre, new Archive store and new Research Facilities. The project had to be about the impact on users of the museum not just about new exhibits.

In May 2013, a plan was submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The bid indicated the location was within one hour of 90% of schools and people in Norfolk, making the Mo ideal to engage with these groups. A letter of support was submitted by the UEA for these

funds. Over two years later in July 2015, "following a lot of hard work by the museum team £1.1 million was awarded for the Education and Archive Centre Extension for the Mo Museum" Mr Miles told his audience.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Our lovely Harvey gave us some cause for concern recently as he had a nasty tummy upset and was very quiet, not his normal self. He was not coming to the front of his pen for a fuss when his carers arrive, which was very unusual. As he was in such poor condition when he arrived this is not really surprising, so a visit to the vets was needed to get his recovery back on track. He had a scan to rule out any underlying problems and thankfully nothing was found. He is now on medication and is such a good boy as he regards his tablets as a treat so they quickly disappear. Chicken and fish meals have been offered to him, and although he liked the fish, it is evident that he prefers chicken. The pregnant cat has also provided us with a few challenges as she did not produce her kittens until over two weeks after her arrival and during the last week she became aggressive towards her carers when they went to clean the housing unit. Although very big she finally had two very tiny kittens. Unfortunately, she rejected the kittens and did not feed them. Sadly one died soon after birth and despite hand rearing the other one, we lost it too. As she was still aggressive at this stage, it was decided the best course of action was to get her neutered and blood tested straight away. Thankfully, the blood test was negative and since her operation she has once again become a friendly little cat. It is fortunate that she came into care as there were children in her previous home and they could have been badly bitten. Although we have never experienced a situation like this before it is something that can happen when a cat is pregnant or has kittens.

Sheringham Scan Angel

Having found two friendly dogs - wearing collars but with no phone number - loose in Sheringham on Saturday 23 April, Beckie Popham was a little stuck for options. The dog warden’s answer phone said the office was closed, and the vets and police are not equipped to take in loose dogs.

Happily, due to the incredible power of Facebook, the two dogs were reunited with their joyful owners two hours later.

However if the owners had not had Facebook, or if they were tourists who did not have the same contacts, or if they were lying injured somewhere, it might not have been so easy.

As it is now law that all dogs are microchipped, Beckie came up with the idea that there should be a community scanner available to anyone who finds a lost dog after hours and at weekends. After an appeal for donations, a scanner has been purchased through Scanner Angels (www.scannerangel.com) and a willing volunteer has been registered as Sheringham’s Scan Angel.

If you find a dog, you must contact the local authority dog warden immediately and arrange for them to collect the dog. This is a requirement by UK law. The dog warden will scan for a microchip to try to contact the owners. The local phone number for the dog warden for Sheringham is 01263 516085.

However if they are closed, or if you find a cat or other pet, you now have another option: Contact Sheringham’s Volunteer Scan Angel Cara Glassfield on 01263 826303 or 07787 405951. Cara can arrange to meet with you and will scan the animal for you.

Cara will be available to contact on the phone between 8am – 9pm seven days a week. After 9pm you may send a Facebook message but please do not expect a response until the next morning. If anyone wishes to be an Overnight Scan Angel please contact Cara.

Cromer Sea Defence Work Comes to a Close Work to help protect Cromer from rising sea levels and potential storm damage has come to a close more than two years after it started on site in January 2014.

The £8million pound scheme, carried out by contractors VolkerStevin, was increased significantly to include repairs to the sea defences and foreshore infrastructure caused by the exceptional storm surge of December 2013.

With a pause for the summer seasons (end of April to end of September 2014 and 2015) the focus has been on ensuring Cromer Promenade, the sea defence foundations, walls and groynes are strong enough to help protect the town for future years.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett said “This has been a major piece of work and it’s been important to the district council to make sure that access has been maintained to the pier and the RNLI lifeboat station during the

work, and I’m pleased to say we have achieved that.

“I would like to thank the traders and businesses for their understanding throughout this work, which has been focused on protecting the town for future years.”

The groynes and parts of the sea wall date back to 1836 which although they have been regularly maintained and enhanced over the years need regular works to ensure they remain fit for purpose.

Particular care has been taken in both designing and constructing the new seawalls, many of which are listed structures. The work to maintain and refurbish the promenade and embedded artwork has improved the appearance of the promenade as well as providing a stronger surface. A smaller project to enhance the groynes will now be worked on following the completion of the major works to Cromer sea defences.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch

At 09.50hrs on Sunday 24 April at the request of Humber Coastguard, the Sheringham Lifeboat was launched into moderate to rough seas to search for a yacht seen by the first informant to be in trouble in heavy seas approximately two to three miles off Beeston Caravan Park. The lifeboat completed a search of the area indicated by the first informant and the coastguard but nothing was eventually found.

Bacton to Walcott Coastal Scheme – Downing Street Meeting

A high-level meeting with Government was held last month to discuss the Bacton to Walcott Coastal Management Scheme and its potential funding.

North Norfolk District Council, Norman Lamb MP, the Environment Agency, The Crown Estate and the Operators of Bacton Gas Terminal met with the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, The Right Hon Oliver Letwin MP. The meeting, held at 9 Downing Street, discussed the potential funding and sought wider Government support for the coastal management project for the terminal and the adjacent villages of Bacton and Walcott.

The scheme, if it is delivered, could involve ‘sandscaping’ the shoreline, effectively using high volumes of additional sand and natural processes to protect the coast. It is hoped that the scheme may attract further government funding to overcome an estimated shortfall in funds. Costs could be significantly reduced if sand could be taken from a new site offshore from Bacton. The scheme has been modelled and work is currently underway on the environmental considerations.

The Bacton Terminal Operators may have to consider going ahead with their self-funded coastal protection scheme if funds cannot be found for a wider public scheme. This would be subject to the normal planning and consent processes and need to demonstrate mitigation for the wider coastal frontage.

Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett said “This was a good opportunity for us to present our case at the highest level of Government so there is a clear understanding of why this work is vital for the community.”

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I believe it is essential to find a way to ensure that Bacton and Walcott benefit. It would not be acceptable for the project to be limited to protecting the gas terminal. I am grateful to Oliver Letwin for seeing us. Now the government must find a way of ensuring that the full scheme can go ahead.”

North East Norfolk Bird Club

Outdoor Event - Pigney’s Wood & Dilham Canal 15 May 09:00 - 13:00 - a walk along the Dilham Canal, with visits to Pigney’s Wood NR, Witton Heath and Bacton Woods. This event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders. Meet at 0900 at the car park for Pigney’s Wood (TG 297322). Take the Bacton Road (B1159) north from North Walsham, and then the left turn (Hall Lane) immediately after crossing the Dilham Canal (brown sign for Pigney’s Wood). Follow Hall Lane to the car park for Pigney’s Wood, NR just past Stone Cottage (about 1 km). The postcode for Stone Cottage is NR28 0SH. We will walk through the wood, down to the canal and then loop back to the car park; the duration

will be about 2 hours and we will encounter woodland, arable and river valley habitats. Because the section of the Dilham Canal south from the B1159 bridge is undergoing renovation (and hence is rather difficult walking and relatively birdless), we will then drive to Bacton Woods for a walk through there and Witton Heath. This section should also be just about two hours, and the car-park is on the NE side of Bacton Wood (postcode NR28 9UE). The walking is relatively easy, though stout shoes are recommended for the damper sections. With luck we should encounter a nice range of woodland and wetland species, with the added bonus of butterflies and early dragonflies. Children are welcome if accompanied by

well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Andy Clarke and Perry Hampson.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Members of North Norfolk Photographic Society were given a brilliant talk by Roger Hance on 6 April.

After attending a photography evening class, Roger joined Ipswich and District Photographic Society nearly 30 years ago and remains a member to this day. He holds no less than four Fellowships of the Royal Photographic Society and has won numerous awards for his photography in many genres.

Roger came to Holt to show some of his Sport and Action images. He showed photographs of athletics, ice hockey, speedway, judo, table tennis, motor cycling, rugger, boxing, cricket, swimming, canoeing - the list seemed endless. Every picture was explained - where is the best place to position yourself to get the result you want and how best to set up the camera.

Each one of Roger's photographs was full of action, perfectly framed, focused and exposed. It was a tour de force.

Sheringham Angel Pack Initiative

It is now four years since we introduced the Angel Pack initiative in Sheringham.

In that time the packs have been used 56 times! They have been used for a variety of incidents, from a person being run over when a car was reversing, a reversing van knocking someone over, someone falling down a broken manhole cover, car accident, falls and trips.... every time the Angel Pack proved useful!

This initiative would not be in place if it was not for the generosity of Sheringham residents. SiS, (Sisters in Spirit), who organise the initiative, would like to thank you for your support over the years.

We do have to fund raise to cover the insurance and we will be holding a fundraising stall as part of the Cromer & Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival on 22 May, down by the Lobster Pub. There will be a wonderful Lucky Dip with brilliant prizes and a Grab a Crab & Lobster game of skill with a small prize every time and a sweet hamper for the overall winner with the highest score - great fun for all - please come along and support us!

Stody Lodge Gardens bursts into colour this May with fun events for all the family

Stody Lodge is opening its stunning gardens once again this May. Visitors are invited to enjoy its celebrated collection of colourful rhododendrons and azaleas, peaceful woodland walks, expansive lawns and delicious homemade charity teas.

COME AND TRY CROQUET

It’s Spring! The ideal time to learn how to play croquet – or to take it up again if you have played it before. Bodham Croquet Club – tucked up the corner of Bodham playing field – is providing instruction and an opportunity to try out this fascinating game on each Wednesday afternoon during May, June and July.

Croquet comes in many different forms. However, there are two’official’ forms of the game, each played to international level ‘Association Croquet’ and ‘Golf Croquet’. Both forms have a handicap system permitting balanced games between people of different ability. They also use the same equipment (mallets and hoops) and the same lawn, but the two forms have very different natures and can be attractive to people with different personalities. ‘Association’ has ancient roots. For the game as we know it, the first set of official rules was defined in the 1860s, the heyday of the game, particularly favoured by ladies looking for partners. A form of croquet with a high strategic element, ‘Association’ can be likened to snooker - the person in play on the lawn, by obtaining extra shots, can build up ‘breaks’ and go through several (or many) hoops in his turn. When no more progress is possible the opponent can then be left in an almost impossible position!

‘Golf’ croquet, on the other hand, is much more of a sociable game. All players congregate together on the lawn and take it in turns to have one hit at their ball. Technically, however, it can be as skilful as ‘Association’. It is a much newer game than ‘Association’ but has grown enormously in popularity in the last two decades. Both forms of the game are played at Bodham and will be covered in the Wednesday afternoon sessions. Anyone interested should turn up for a 2pm start, wearing softish shoes.
