Kelling Probus Club
On Thursday 18 October Chairman Terry Penrose welcomed 25 members and one guest. He asked them to stand in silence to remember Vic Allen who had been Chairman twice and also served as secretary.
After lunch, Probus member Dr Michael Bennett entertained us with an impromptu account of his time working in Trinidad in the 1950s during the last days of colonialism.
A chance remark by his Professor at Kings College had led him to the London office of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad. With nearly 100 ex-patriot scientists, it was one of the world’s leading agricultural institutes, doing research into a range of tropical crops. One of those projects concerned sugarcane, and it had been decided to recruit a specialist in colloidal chemistry Michael’s own field for his PhD.
He had just married Mollie, who was a King’s 22
College physiotherapist and they willingly took the opportunity to work in such a prestigious outpost of the British Empire.
In 1954 there were no direct flights to the Caribbean so they sailed for 14 days across the Atlantic in SS Golfito, a Fyffe Line banana boat – of shallow draught and without stabilisers! On board they struck up a friendship with Clyde Walcott, the West Indian cricket hero, and his family, who kindly showed them around Barbados for three days and introduced them to the problems of segregation.
Professionally, Michael found that the sugar industry was largely unexplored by his specialism, and he was able to make rapid progress. Mollie had been recruited into the local Health Authority to help in the polio epidemic.
Socially he and Mollie were enjoying life with two quite separate circles of friends – ex-patriot colonial Academia and West Indian
medics – which, perhaps, would have been unthinkable ten years earlier.
He recounted some amusing tales of his experiences in this bygone age. During his second three-year term at the College, as Trinidad approached Independence, things began to change, and when Michael got an offer to join Tate & Lyle in the UK, they decided, with regrets, that this was the time to bring their young family home.
Michael was roundly applauded for his entertaining insight into the dying days of Caribbean colonialism.
Three new members, Bruce Bedwell, Geoff Goodman and Bill Day, gave brief introductory talks on their ‘previous lives’.
NB Please note the changed date of the next Probus meeting which will be held on Thurs 22nd November - a week later than usual. Nick Grice of Sheringham Lifeboat will be our speaker. Please phone Kevin Clingo (01263 824624) if you would like to join us.
