Town to Light Up

The North Walsham & District Calendar

The North Walsham & District Community Archive are delighted to announce our 2023 calendars are now available and we have managed to hold the prices at £5 each again this year thanks to the support of local businesses advertising in the publication. This is the eighth calendar in the series which started with the 2016 edition. Money made from past calendars have enabled us to continue to buy further interesting photos of the town's history, some of which appear in the new calendar.

continued from front Chairman Colin Jeary said: “Despite the current situation with the regeneration of the market place the committee were determined to ensure that lights were erected, as well as a proper switch on, as this has not been possible for the last two years due to weather and Covid.”

He added that the team have been working with the contractors to ensure that stalls and entertainment can take place leading up to the 6pm switch on. There will be children’s fair rides, food, craft and charity stalls as well as entertainment from around 2pm right through until 6pm. The Christmas lights and switch on event is organised entirely by a team of 10-12 volunteers who plan throughout the year to make sure everything is ready for the main event. The lights are entirely funded by donations from individuals and the towns traders with a donation of just £20 asked to be donated from each business in the town.

There is also a just giving page which is raising money for new lights and to ensure that the team can continue the great work each year. www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/nwchristmaslights2022

We are proud that our calendar is still produced in North Walsham and printed locally using the best quality printing techniques and paper possible. An ideal Christmas present for anybody locally or historically minded. The 2023 calendar includes important, local events featured on the applicable dates making it a useful and attractive way to share our collection with the public and safeguard the photos for future generations. The calendar has become a firm favourite with those who grew up in the town and remember ‘the good old days’, newcomers to the town interested in its history and to those lucky enough to grow up here but who now live further away (copies are sent all over the world via our website). The calendar is as collectible as it is practical. Calendars are available from North Walsham shops; C. D. Page (i.e. Colin's Sweetshop), Swallows Coffee Shop, Express Printing & Stationery, The Community Shop, The Heritage Centre, Sam's Pets and Penney's Flowers & Crafts. None of these businesses make any profits but sell our calendar to support the group and its projects. The calendars are also available via our website at www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk for those further afield. The North Walsham & District Community Archive has been running over 15 years now, managed by a hard-working group of volunteers with backgrounds in history, local photographs and the area. Our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/ NorthWalshamArchive/ has been running for 9 years and is as active as ever with well over 8,000 members! It’s free and easy to join, and you will be able to view thousands of photos from the history of the town and discuss those photos and memories with other members. North Walsham Times

Can you spare even A Note from the editor The other day I heard someone say: ‘My grandson an hour a week? has seen two monarchs, three prime ministers and

We often hear about the ‘hidden carers’, usually unpaid members of families supplementing or even taking on the full care of older people in order for them to remain living at home. Statistics show that 2/3 older people over the age of 65 have a partner living with them and this reduces to 1/3 when over 85 years. It is getting harder for older people especially to obtain the right amount of care to meet their needs for personal support but also to avoid loneliness and isolation. Age Concern North Norfolk has a day centre open 4 days per week but we are running below the numbers we could actually cater for. We are also providing over 550 meals per month to people who attend the day care or the Lunch club but also to people living in their own homes between Cromer and Holt. We have a great capacity and willingness to support as many people as possible this Chris winter to get through what is going to be a difficult time for us all. However, although we have qualified care staff, we still need the support of our volunteers to supplement our services in the day centre but particularly with the delivery of meals.

four chancellors in his lifetime, and he is only four months old!’ It seems a day is a long time in politics, let alone a week. I suspect we have more upheaval to go through before things settle down to anything like it was before. Meanwhile, we are still seeing record inflation and fuel poverty, with many people worried about what the winter will bring. There are many organizations ready to lend a hand, these include help with food and stay warm schemes. A good source of information of what is available is on the NNDC website. Fundamental Change in the Law Results in More Divorces

The new procedure involves a divorce being applied for online through the Government Online Portal. What it does not do is to automatically give a process for dealing with financial arrangements arising from the divorce. This remains a crucial area. Likewise, the most important aspect of resolving any arguments over children may still need the involvement of a Court in resolving any disagreements between parents. It is to be hoped though that the new no-fault divorce law will help spouses and parents to work together more amicably and collaboratively. There is also the possibility under the new law of a joint application being made for a divorce whereas previously one spouse had to apply for a divorce against the other.

On 6 April 2022 the law surrounding divorces in England and Wales was changed radically. Before that a divorce could only take place based on one of five reasons and for an immediate divorce that could only be adultery or unreasonable behaviour.

This all changed in April. “No-fault” divorce came into operation in April. This enables a husband or a wife (or them jointly) to apply for their marriage to be brought to an end, but without having to give a reason. Under the old law it was often the case that behaviour was exaggerated to enable a divorce to take place, or marriages had to continue even where the spouses acknowledged that it was realistically over. No-fault divorce was intended to avoid arguments and animosity over an actual divorce, but the immediate result has been that, for the first three months following the new law coming into operation, substantially more divorces have been started than previously.

Between April and June 2022 a total of 33,566 divorce applications were made in England and Wales. The majority were made under the new legislation and from a sole application, i.e. not joint. This is the highest level since the beginning of 2012. Over the coming months and years we will need to see whether the no-fault divorce results in continued higher numbers of divorces. Also whether the long-term intention of more amicable divorces filters through to what happens when couples split up.

It has been suggested that there was a period before the new law came into operation where divorces were not started and that has resulted in the increase following the April change. There was a concern when the new law was being discussed as to whether it would make divorces too easy; so time will tell as to whether the increased number of divorces being started will continue or whether the first quarter statistics just show that there was what has been described as “pent up demand”.

At Clapham & Collinge we have a dedicated team of experts who are able to provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice on family law. Our legal advice is bespoke, confidential and totally designed around you, helping you come to the best conclusion for both you and your family. Our family law solicitors can advise you on: • Arrangements for children • Civil-Partnerships • Collaborative Law and Family Mediation • Domestic Violence and Abuse • Separation and Divorce • Financial and Property settlements • Living together • Pre-nuptial and cohabitation agreements

What the new law does not do is to make dealing with finances or children any easier. However, it is hoped that taking away the animosity around an actual divorce itself will lead to a better attitude when dealing with fundamental long-term aspects such as finances and children are to be resolved. The emphasis with these areas remains on spouses and parents trying to reach agreement wherever possible. The Government has been trying to encourage mediation as an option giving “vouchers” to those willing to try mediation instead of more acrimonious and expensive Court Proceedings. Taking away arguments over whether a divorce should take place, and on what basis, will undoubtedly help in the correct tone being set between spouses that are splitting up and having a divorce, especially where children are concerned and involved.

Remembrance Sunday 13th November 2022

Menopause, your skin and you. Help is at hand at the Coltishall Clinic with effective, discounted packages on offer.

After a 2 year break the traditional events held on Remembrance Sunday will take place again this year in North Walsham.

It has been widely publicised: the effects the menopause can have on us and our bodies both physically and psychologically with there being a minimum of 34 symptoms and according to some as many as 60! With this in mind the effects this can have on our skin and therefore our confidence can be pretty profound. At Coltishall clinic we are committed to helping support our patients through this time with advice on skin rejuvenation and preventative measures. As we age it is natural for our collagen levels to drop and with 30% of our collagen being lost in the first 5 years of menopause the visual effects can be pretty striking. We may start to notice more volume loss, skin textural issues, dryness, pigmentation, lines and wrinkles, dullness and even enlarged pores or puffiness! Some even experience rosacea or worsening symptoms of the aforementioned. As bleak as this seems there are many treatment options available plus homecare that can really help to reverse these signs of ageing and also give us a much needed boost!

The 2pm service in Memorial Park will pay tribute to the fallen of World War Two and following a March to Church the 3pm service in the Church will pay tribute to the fallen of World War One.

The Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps from the units in the town will form a guard of honour around the Cairn and three wreaths will be laid in remembrance in the Memorial Park. At the appropriate time the Union flag will be lowered to half-mast and then after the silent tribute will be raised to full mast.

Following the short service in the Park a March to Church will leave at approximately 2.30pm which will include the other youth organisations who would have formed up in Farman Avenue. All ex-serviceman in the town are invited to join the March and will head the other formations following the three Military Standards. Veterans who are users of electronically powered vehicles are also invited to join in the March to Church.

Collagen regenerating treatments are at the forefront of this along with our many state of the art lasers that can treat anything from pigmentation to the symptoms of rosacea, skin tightening, and textural improvement. Our faces aside, the menopause can also affect our bodies with there being huge changes one of the most sensitive being vaginal atrophy. Some of the symptoms of this include vaginal itching and burning, dryness, loss of natural lubrication, laxity, incontinence and pain during intercourse. We offer the revolutionary Monalisa touch laser treatment to help with all these symptoms. A minimum of 3 sessions is normally advised and a sensitive consultation and examination with a Dr are given. Why not book a consultation to discuss treatment options and gain some advice from our skin specialists on the ways to proceed and courses of treatment available!

At the service in the Church organisations in the Town who would like to lay wreaths on this day will be invited at the appropriate time by the Vicar to lay their wreaths in the Memorial Chapel.

We are offering the following treatment packages during this month

*Save £ 200 on a course of 3 Monalisa touch sessions *Facial Microdermabrasion and radiofrequency session £ 300.00 Course of 6 £1750 this comes with £100 worth of skincare of your choice *Facial microdermabrasion followed by micro needling and radiofrequency combined this comes with £150 worth of skincare products Course of 3 £1700 *Microdermabrasion and peel course of 3 £250.00 with a complimentary product of your choice

Norfolk Wildlife Trust have launched this year’s winter Cley Calling Festival, which takes place at NWT Cley Marshes on the North Norfolk coast from Thursday 1 December to Sunday 4 December. On the Sunday, families can enjoy Cley at no cost, during NWT’s Free Family Fun Day. The festival’s theme this winter is ‘Standing up for Nature’. Four days of events will celebrate our personal connections to nature, explore some of the increasing threats facing wildlife today and reveal what we can all do to help.

Cley Calling: Standing up for Nature features walks, art, literature, inspirational talks, music and nature workshops, all set with the beautiful backdrop of NWT Cley Marshes. Throughout the festival, there will be opportunities to blow away the cobwebs and soak up the glory of Cley Marshes for all ages. Events will include family fun inspired by the nature reserve and some offer a chance for you to do your bit to help nature, such as by joining one of NWT’s beach cleans. Ladies Circle Search for Lost Jewel

A women’s club has made a comeback in a North Norfolk town after closing in 2009. Ladies Circle is a club for women aged 18-45 with the principles of fun, friendship and fundraising. The group will form on the 20th of October when the Circle’s National President, Fiona Bull will officially launch the club. Claire Cushing, Chair of North Walsham Ladies Circle, said: “We are all so excited! We have a fantastic team of ladies who have worked very hard to get us to this point and I am very much looking forward to the seeing our club grow and to meet many more new members. You don’t have to live in North Walsham to join, we welcome ladies from all over.” There is only one thing missing to complete the launch and that is the Chair’s Jewel, which the group have been unable to track down since the last club closed. The Jewel is an historical chain which contains the name badges of all previous Chair's names and dates back to 1964. Mrs Cushing said: “We have asked everyone we know that was connected to the old group, but we fear the Jewel is lost. It would be such a shame if we can’t find this piece of history and it would really mean a lot to both us and the previous members if we could find it.”

The Chair’s Jewel

Whilst Ladies Circle ends at age 45, the sister club Ladies Tangent welcomes members from the age of 45. Tracey Phipps, who will be the Club President for this year and is a Tangent member, said: “When I first moved to North Norfolk, I realised that there was a gap in social events for younger women

and as I was a Ladies Circle Member previously, I wanted to help set something up here. We have all had so much fun. It has been a privilege to work with such a brilliant committee and to meet lots of new friends.” The Ladies Circle have already attended lots of activities including alpaca walking and archery, with many more activities planned.

Stephanie Lloyd, who is part of the fundraising team, said: “Being part of Ladies Circle is an absolute joy! We have a good mix of activities and Ladies Circle Committee sometimes we just meet for dinner. We know accommodating a large group of ladies can be a bit of handful, but we have had great support from local businesses.”

The Orchard Gardens in North Walsham will support Ladies Circle’s next fundraising event on the 23rd of November, which is a Bingo Night to raise funds for the Rainbow Trust.

If you know where the Chair’s Jewel is, email Claire at chairman.nwlc@gmail.com If you want to know more about Ladies Circles, including how to join, you can email Lucy the Membership Secretary at membership.nwlc@gmail.com

North Walsham Could You Make a Difference? Change, Grow, Live is a charity which delivers the Norfolk IndePop Up pendent Visitors Service, and we are desperate to recruit committed and passionate volunteers across the whole of the county who People’s Theatre would like to spend a day a month with a young person in care. The

A free theatre show for all the family will take place in North Walsham this November with shooting stars, rockets and a bright blue monkey bringing a new story, written especially for North Walsham, to audiences.

After a summer of consultation during their free workshops, New Stages has created a new show based on the themes of friendship and kindness to inspire families and children to connect with their community and each other. The 45-minute show, designed for families and younger audiences, will be performed at North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre. It’s the new venue where New Stages take over the function room of the Black Swan, on Black Swan Loke, to convert it into a theatre space. Joseph Ballard, Director of New Stages said: “I hope that by presenting this show in the town centre, we can offer something fun for families to share together and make it easy to get to. I’m proud to offer completely free tickets as this will enable lots of people to access it at a time when we’re all feeling the pinch in a cost-of-living crisis.”

children and young people we work with have suffered abuse, neglect and often both; they often mistrust adults and need positive role models to show them that relationships can be trusting, healthy and positive. The role of an Independent Visitor can be immensely rewarding and fun; taking a child or teenager out once a month to have fun together by engaging in community activities or visiting places of interest. Minimum age for volunteer applicants is 21 and minimum commitment is for 2 years, once a month. Full training and support are provided, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are happy to report that Bear’s blood test was satisfactory and within 3 hours of being advised, his new family had come to collect him. He has settled in very well and his new family have told us that after seeing him they just wanted to offer him a home and that he was well worth waiting for. Jasper, one of our longer-term residents has also left us, and again his new family are delighted to have him join their household. As one of the older cats in care we are very happy to learn that he too has now found his forever home. Last time we also mentioned that we have several young cats who needed homes with experienced cat owners because they were timid and would need more time to adapt and settle. One of these was Sophie, a lovely grey and white girl, who joined us from an outside situation. Sophie has been in her new home for two weeks at the time of writing this. I have had a message from her new family which advises us that she has settled well, is eating well and gaining confidence daily. She does have a hidey hole where she goes if unsure of anything but has bonded with her new owner and loves being stroked by her. We are amazed that she has settled so quickly and are now hoping that some of the other cats will be as lucky as Sophie. We have cat traps which we are happy to lend to people, either to deal with feral colonies or to help return a cat that has lost its way to its family, and several are in use at present. We do ask that people return them as soon as possible as there is often someone else waiting to borrow them. One gentleman borrowed one to deal with some stray cats which he is happy to care for once neutered. He has kept us advised of progress and indicated he will be returning the trap once he and his wife have recovered from Covid. We are happy with this arrangement. Unlike the gentleman who borrowed a trap to catch his Bengal cat which had escaped and was living in Sainsburys Delivery area. Having caught the cat the next day we are still waiting for him to return it. We live in

hope but may have to contact Head Office regarding this! If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on Sophie 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home. We are on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

North Walsham in Bloom

North Walsham in Bloom have had quite a successful summer this year in spite of the very dry weather. Our watering man Tony has worked very hard to keep all the beds and tubs going. We have moved two of the towers from the new Bus Hub to outside Postles Shop and these look very good. It is difficult for the helpers to work on Postles site as we get all the fumes from the traffic coming from the Market Place area and this has always been a bit of a worry. We are expecting to move some more tubs to fit in with the new work in the Town. It has been decided not to change the planting completely as we have in other autumns. At the moment we will be removing all the F 1 begonias from all the displays and replacing them with other plants. This will include the plants from the barrier baskets which have now been moved from Spec-Savers to the railings at the Bus Hub. The geraniums and lysimachia will be staying for the time being in the tubs and will be replaced later in the autumn. We have a major problem at the moment in that our lovely Muriel has stood down as Plant co-ordinator and despite quite a bit of advertising around the town, and on social media no one has come forward to replace her. None of our helpers are happy to take on this responsibility. Muriel has carried out this work for some years, but now finds that for health reasons she can no longer continue. Unless we can find someone to replace Muriel the future of In Bloom is looking a bit precarious. So, if anyone is able to come forward and help, we would be very grateful.

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over three years old.

Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the Before bloodstream.

Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet. Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum), causing teeth to fracture.

Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.

After

When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and

polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.

Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet. If you are concerned about your pets dental health, or want to get your puppy or kitten started on the right track with oral health, or just want to discuss our specialised dental treatments including our state-of-the-art dental x-ray, please contact our team on 01692 407126.

Editor’s Recipe - Coconut Slices

Despite the current cost of living crisis and all of us having to tighten our belts, we also need a small treat every so often to lift the spirits. With this in mind, I have tried to select a recipe which uses ingredients which you probably already have in your cupboard and is quick and easy to do. It is an old WI recipe which I remember my mum making when I was a child and it always felt like a treat.

The recipe makes 24 slices and if you make it when you already have the oven on for something else, if not too costly to bake. You will need a 12” x 9” Swiss roll tin.

salt and 25g of the sugar, rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add the beaten egg and a little cold water and bring together to a stiff paste. Wrap and chill in the fridge for 15 mins. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to fit the Swiss roll tin, not forgetting to bring it up sides. Spread the jam generously over the pastry base.

Ingredients.

225g self-raising flour Pinch of salt 120g softened butter 85g caster sugar ½ beaten egg 3 tablespoons jam (I use raspberry) 120g desiccated coconut 1 tablespoon milk

Method

Pre heat your oven to 160C (or make when the oven is already on). In a medium mixing bowl mix the flour and

Perfect Pie

Anything with pie in the title just has to be good; who doesn’t love a great pie and mash dinner as the evenings draw in and the temperature goes down? Of course, you can go and buy one from the supermarket, but they really are the easiest things to make yourself, and with the availability of excellent ready rolled pastry also one of the quickest. This one requires no meat and can be adapted for vegans too if you use soya cream, which can be bought easily now and keeps for ages in the fridge, making it very user friendly.

It also tastes great and behaves exactly as dairy cream; I make a point of always having it in the house. Roasting veg before using it gives it a heightened flavour and sweetness, which works amazingly well in a pie, particularly the garlic; I promise you it is worth the extra work. It is

using seasonal veg so saves you money whilst delivering lots of nutritious bang for your buck. You could batch cook a number of these pies to save money and time and freeze them cooked. This tastes so delicious even the meat eaters are going to want it!

Roast Veg Pie

¼ celeriac, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks 6 garlic cloves, left whole and in the skins 1 large white onion, diced 1 leek, quartered lengthways and chopped Punnet mushrooms, quartered Dried thyme Veg stock and thickener such as Bisto Small carton double cream, or soya cream Pack ready rolled puff pastry

Method Start by tossing the celeriac, garlic cloves and butternut squash in a little olive oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and roasting in a pre-heated oven on 180° for approx. ½ hour, or until almost cooked through and slightly browned, then remove and set aside. Meanwhile, gently fry the onion and leek for 10 mins with a tsp dried thyme and add in the mushrooms, frying for a further 5 mins.

Add in enough stock to just cover the veg and stir well, bringing up to the boil. Sprinkle in your thickener until you have a good thick consistency and take off the heat. Stir in the cream, add in the celeriac and squash and squeeze the garlic out of the skins into the mix and stir, adjusting your seasoning to taste.

Place into a deep oven proof dish and cut the puff pastry out to cover the pie, pricking it a few times to let the air escape. Place into your preheated oven for approx. 30mins until the pastry is cooked through and golden and serve immediately. Carolyn Burn

Alone at Christmas?

Great hearing

Fingers crossed, North Walsham Churches Together is now doing the planning to resume the annual Christmas Lunch, a very popular and happy occasion in the town for over 20 years until Covid made its unwelcome appearance. It is held at the Community Centre and is for anyone living in North Walsham who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day. The invitation is also extended to couples where one is a carer for the other. Very kindly, we are given free use of the Community Centre, and all other costs are covered by donations, in kind or money, from various charitable groups or individuals in the town, so there is no charge for the meal. There is a retiring collection for local charities should anyone wish to contribute. The day for guests begins about 12.30 pm with a welcome drink, and finishes about three hours later, after what will be the first King's Speech. If transport is required, it can be arranged. Those already on our database do not need to do anything - you can expect to be contacted fairly soon. If, for any reason, you seem to have been missed, then do contact us via the contact details given below. Equally, there will be others in the town who would now like to join us for the first time, or after a gap. You would be most welcome. If you have company yourself but know of someone else who would be alone and might like to come along, please let us know. You can phone John on 01692 405119 or email Felicity - felicitynnorfolk@yahoo.co.uk

Back by Popular Demand: Christmas Comedy at the Grove!

Christmas is always a time for good cheer, and now North Norfolk residents can gear up for the festive season with three nights of the finest comedy at the Grove in Cromer. Sundown – the Grove’s event space, in two giant tipis – will host the return of Christmas Comedy evenings on Thursday evenings in December. The nights debuted last Christmas and were a smash hit, with comedians from all over the country entertaining full houses with a laugh minute gags and side-splitting stories. Added to which were ‘loaded tables’, featuring Sundown’s unique tapas and pizza, and arrival drinks too.

Several of 2021’s stars, including Mark Simmonds and John Mann, are returning this year, and host Danny Ward is already looking forward to the events.

There’s nothing quite like it in the area and everyone who came had a wonderful time. The acts are absolutely tremendous and they are special nights very much enjoyed by everyone who came along.”

On 7 October at Cromer Ambulance Station a presentation of awards was made to local community engagement volunteers Jonathan Rackham, David Russell and Nigel Pearce by North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker. Harriet Snowden the Ambulance Trust's Patient Experience Lead said: "We are celebrating the wonderful work our community engagement group volunteers across the region. We are glad that Duncan Baker MP was able to present the group the certificates and personally thank them for the hard work that they do for our patients in the East of England. The Community Engagement Group are proactive at supporting the Trust to share education, attend events and support fundraising for the Trust. They act as critical friends and representatives of our patients in their area. We are forever grateful for everything they do to support the Patient and Public Strategy". Duncan Baker added: "As an MP who is tirelessly working to improve ambulance response times, and championing our heroic paramedics and first responders, it was a great pleasure to help present two of the three marvellous constituents with their community engagement awards. Nigel, David and Jonathan do so much engagement with the community to promote the work of our ambulance services with advice and helpful knowledge. Swallowtails Fine Art Exhibition, St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market

Friday 11th – Sunday 13th November 2022 Following their successful inaugural exhibition in Horning this October, Swallowtail Fine Artists invite you to their fine arts exhibition at St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market which will take place from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th November 2022, 10am - 4pm daily (11.30am - 4pm on Remembrance Sunday).

Sheringham & District Philatelic Society

The stamps of Iceland featured as the main display at the October meeting of the Society. Peter Boyce, of the Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society, joined us for the evening and gave a brief history of this country and of its political and philatelic history. Iceland became independent of Norway after WWW1 in 1918 and became a republic in 1944, issuing its first stamps in 1873. As pictorial stamps began to be issued, they reflected the scenery, flora and fauna, with particularly interesting bird stamps. Peter’s collection ended in the year 2000 and Iceland ceased to produce its own stamps in 2021. The second part of Peter’s display was of The Levant, a loose collection of Eastern Mediterranean countries, ruled over by many other countries over the years. This led to an interesting, but highly confusing, philatelic picture! Visitors are most welcome to attend the meetings, the next one being on November 14th – Quiz night. Contact Jim for further details on 01263 721043

Swallowtail Fine Artists is an exciting new collaboration between professional wildlife artist Lorraine Auton, pastel artist Amanda SpringallRogers and photographic artist Tony College with the aim of bringing quality artwork to local audiences. All work (original paintings, limited edition prints, photographs, and greetings cards) will be for sale. Free sketching classes will take place on Saturday 10.30am-12pm and Sunday 2pm-3.30pm with Lorraine Auton. These are suitable for all ages and abilities. Selling your home to appeal to energy efficient buyers by Melanie Robson, Associate Hayes + Storr

Energy efficiency matters more to some home buyers these days than the size of the garden. According to a recent survey by Money.com, solar panels now rank ahead of ensuite bathrooms and, as energy prices rise, this trend looks set to continue. So, if you are selling your home, how can you make your house appeal to today’s energy efficient buyers? Fortunately, you can improve your home’s performance and make it easier to sell without spending a fortune.

Your EPC can help you

You will need a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before marketing your home, and it will then be available to any potential buyer. The EPC is a short report, produced by an accredited energy assessor, on the energy efficiency of a property. It will rate your home A to G, with A being the most energy efficient grading. The EPC should also include recommendations to improve your home’s rating. An EPC lasts for ten years. So, your home may already have one. If you cannot find a copy, you can check on the website: www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate.

Take care to consider the EPC’s recommendations before putting your home on

the market. It may reveal some straightforward ways to make your home more energy efficient. If you are commissioning a new EPC, you may want to increase your home’s energy efficiency first. There may be cost-effective ways of doing this, for example, by switching to LED bulbs or insulating your loft. You can find suggestions at Simple Energy Advice.

Having a higher EPC rating may be more important for some types of property, from 2025, the Government may require rental properties to have at least a C rating. So, if your property could appeal to buy-to-let investors, then you may want to bear this in mind. Currently a privately rented property must have a rating of no less than E.

Every home is unique, and what works well for one property may be more difficult to implement in another. Some properties may not be suitable for cavity wall insulation due to solid walls or because the work may aggravate damp issues.

Upgrading to a new boiler, or installing double, or even triple, glazing could make your home more attractive to buyers concerned about rising energy costs.

Make sure you obtain all the necessary statutory consents

Most significant improvements, including solid or cavity wall insulation, double glazing, solar panels, or new boilers, all require building regulations consent. However, if the contractor installing them is authorised under the Competent Person Scheme, then all procedural matters will be dealt with as standard.

Other consents you may need

Occasionally, there may be title restrictions which mean you need a third party’s consent. If you plan major work, such as installing solar panels, then you should check your property’s title for any restrictions first.

Keep the paperwork safe

Remember to keep any guarantees or warranties safe. Your buyers are likely to require these before completing their purchase. For further information, call 01263 825959 or email mel.robson@hayes-storr.com.

Get Protected and Get Vaccinated This Winter

More than 100,000 autumn COVID-19 vaccination boosters have been administered to people across Norfolk and Waveney. NHS Norfolk and Waveney’s campaign is off to a great start as thousands have come forward for their autumn booster jab. “Our colleagues have been working tirelessly to deliver the autumn booster programme, and we’re delighted to have given more than 100,000 vaccinations since we began vaccinating at the beginning of September,” said Kate Keeling, Head of Immunisation at NHS Norfolk and Waveney. “We continue to urge local people to take up the offer of the vaccine as soon as they are called forward. People who are eligible should book without delay when they are invited by the NHS either by booking through the NHS website or calling 119.” People aged 65+, carers and pregnant women can book an appointment to have their autumn booster at http://nhs.uk/covidvaccine or call 119 (as long as it’s been three months since their last dose). Please note that autumn boosters are via booked appointments only across our sites in Norfolk and Waveney. Around 26 million people across England will be eligible for an autumn booster in line with guidance set out by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). This includes: l residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults l frontline health and social care workers l all adults aged 50 years and over l persons aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group, as set out in the Green Book – this includes pregnant women

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

persons aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression l persons aged 16 to 49 years who are carers, as set out in the Green Book Some patients may be invited to have their vaccination at a local GP-led site. A number of pharmacies in the area will also offer the autumn booster to eligible patients. The programme will extend to other eligible groups through to December 2022. The NHS will contact people from eligible cohorts when it is their turn to book in for the vaccine – people do not need to contact the NHS. To help the NHS help you, please follow the advice below. We would like to remind people who have made booked appointments to attend these on time and to arrive no more than five to ten minutes before your appointment. If people attend earlier than this, it can lead to queuing, delays and traffic congestion at vaccination sites. If you arrive early for your appointment, please wait in your car. Wrap up well – As the weather is changing, please consider this before leaving. Please consider thin layers (with short sleeves as your base layer) are recommended. Please don’t turn up requesting a vaccine without an appointment. All vaccines are allocated to people in priority groups with pre-booked appointments and anyone attending without an appointment will be asked to leave The NHS will contact people when it is their turn to book in for the vaccine – you do not need to contact the NHS. We urge all those invited for both a flu and COVID-19 booster vaccine to take up the offer as quickly as possible – it will give you maximum protection this winter. To book your COVID-19 booster visit: Book or manage a coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination – NHS (www.nhs.uk) l

ALCG meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of most months - from 10.00 to around 12.00. North Walsham Library Chess Group (NWLCG) is aimed at all ages (including children and senior citizens) and all chess abilities. NWLCG meets on Friday afternoons - from 4.00 to around 6.00. Jonathan Reeve (Aylsham Library Chess Group Organiser) said: “There seems to have been a recent resurgence of interest in chess. Serious players have the opportunity of joining Aylsham, Broadland and North Norfolk chess clubs or playing ‘on-line’. Thankfully, there are also local opportunities for less-experienced players and those more interested in playing friendly ‘over the board’ games. Hopefully, a few more people will consider trying the Aylsham and North Walsham Library chess groups.”

Council to Hold Cost of Living Summit with Local Organisations

The rising cost of living is a significant concern to those living in North Norfolk, with many this winter facing difficult financial decisions. North Norfolk District Council is holding a cost-of-living summit on Thursday 3 November, engaging with local organisations and stakeholders to assess the support options available and how to best help residents through hardships as a result of rising costs. Resident's survey The Council has also launched a resident’s survey, seeking views and feedback regarding the cost-of-living impact. The responses received will be analysed for discussion at the summit and shape the action plan. The aim of the summit and survey will be to increase the understanding of the cost-of-living impact across North Norfolk and promote awareness of and support for the various responses and programmes of assistance available in the District, particularly around the issues of food banks usage and energy bills. In attendance will be representatives from countywide and district public bodies, voluntary, charity and community organisations,

Norfolk Community Foundation – Surviving Winter Appeal

The Norfolk Community Foundation is running a public fundraising campaign for people to donate the rebate to their Surviving Winter campaign to help establish Community Hot-Spots. This year the Norfolk Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter campaign will be helping their charity and voluntary partners establish Community Hot-Spots. These hot spots will provide a warm, inclusive environment for people to take a break from the cold, meet people in their communities and gain access to any support they may need to help them get through the upcoming winter months. The foundation is calling on the public to help their communities this winter by helping to provide the Community Hot-Spots by ‘donating the rebate’ whether this is the £150 council tax rebate, the £300 increased winter fuel payment for 65+, the £400 energy grant, or anything you can afford.

including faith groups. Sheringham Salvation Army, Cromer Foodbank and Norfolk Community Foundation will be presenting to the summit on their work and how they support residents. Leader of the Council, Cllr. Tim Adams said: “As we head into winter, more residents than ever will be looking towards us as a Council, their local communities and fantastic charities and organisations in North Norfolk to help them through difficult times. It’s important that we can support any residents who are struggling and holding a summit to create an action plan.” Further advice and support If you need advice and support, there are several ways we can help, and getting help as soon as possible can prevent things from getting worse. Visit our cost-of-living page for further advice and support from the Council, local organisations and charities.

The Norfolk Community Foundation also provides grants of £2,000 to contribute towards the cost of running or establishing a

Community Hot-Spot, which can be applied for by charities, grassroots community groups or community organisations looking to provide a warm space for people in their community. The more support they have, the more help they can give communities. Cllr. Tim Adams, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “I welcome the Norfolk Community Foundation initiative to support Community-Hot Spots, otherwise known as Warm Hubs. Residents who can possibly support this important work will be helping families in their local communities who need additional help this winter during the living costs crisis.” Performances take place at The Copeman Centre, Briston NR24 2LG: Thursday 8 December – 7.30pm Friday 9 December – 7.30pm Saturday 10 December – 2.30pm and 7.30pm Tickets are £8 Adults, £5 Children and £20 for a Family (2 adults, 2 Children). North Norfolk Photographic Society held their first competition of the season on October 5th, with the theme "Home and Garden". As you might expect with such a creative group of people there was a wide range of image styles and the judge, Michael Lloyd, held back 28 images for a second look before coming to his decision. The entries included garden wildlife, interiors, creative multiple and long exposures, even an aerial view taken from a light aircraft. The 4 images awarded gold were: Glasses and Roses by Grace Glaister, Homely Reflections by Robbie Spencer, My Bedroom Chair by Diana Knight, Vase on a Shelf by Valerie Walker. If you are interested in photography and would like to come along to see what we do at the Club, please visit our website nnps.uk for details of meetings and the full programme.

Fundraising and Great Gifts at The Norfolk Christmas Fair Thursday 17th November 2022, 9am to 3pm Godwick Great Barn, Mill Lane, Tittleshall, PE32 2RJ

Thirty of the region’s best designers, traders and artisans will delight Christmas shoppers looking for original, high quality and affordable Christmas presents at The Norfolk Christmas Fair on Thursday 17th November. Visitors will find luxury leather goods, organic cosmetics, stunning stationary, hand-decorated pottery, high-end homeware, well-priced jewellery and much, much more. Thornage Hall is an independent charity near Holt in north Norfolk which provides supported living, learning and working opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. The Norfolk Christmas Fair is Thornage Hall’s largest annual fundraiser and this year funds will go towards the building of Orchard Lodge – a fully accessible new residential building that will be suitable for Thornage’s ageing population. It will have four en-suite bedrooms with a further two rooms for a sleep-in member of staff and a volunteer so that tenants have access to support during the night should they need it. Additionally, there will be a communal living, room, dining room and accessible kitchen. Mary Marchant, committee member, said: “We are really excited about fundraising for this important new building at Thornage Hall Independent Living. It will ensure that our older tenants, some of whom have been at Thornage Hall for over 30 years, will be able to continue to benefit from the remarkable support of this wonderful community despite their changing needs as they age. The Norfolk Christmas Fair is packed full of fantastic stalls selling really interesting, good quality and affordable Christmas gifts. Bring your Christmas present list to us on Thursday 17th November and you’ll be amazed at what you find!” The fair is open from 9am to 3pm and entrance is £5. All the proceeds of the entry, tombola and raffle tickets go to the construction of Orchard Lodge at Thornage Hall Independent Living. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
