Priscilla Bacon Hospice charity shop in North Walsham celebrates 1st birthday One of the six charity shops set up in Norfolk, to help fund the building of the new Priscilla Bacon Hospice has just celebrated its first year of trading.

Shop Manager Sarah Andrews said "The shop has received so many compliments on its smart appearance and the quality of stock donated by our many supporters. The shop includes two rooms of ladies’, men’s and children’s fashion, as well as a dedicated vintage area, and two rooms filled with electricals, household goods and small furniture.”

Bryan Saunders, Head of Retail said "We are so grateful to the residents of North Walsham for their support over the year. Our staff and volunteers love meeting and talking to the shoppers and donors of stock. Six Priscilla Bacon Hospice charity shops, located in North Walsham, Aylsham, Stalham, Sheringham, Drayton and Taverham, were established to help underpin the fundraising operation and ensure that 93 pence in every pound raised is committed to the campaign to build the new hospice.

The shops also raise awareness of the charity and act as local hubs to extend support from the wider community.

Priscilla Bacon Hospice is a new charity which has recently launched a campaign to raise ÂŁ12.5 million to build a new hospice with 24 inpatient beds and replace Priscilla Bacon Lodge, the existing specialist hospice facility in Norwich.

Priscilla Bacon Lodge was built 40 years ago, following a countywide fundraising appeal and has provided a very high standard of specialist palliative care. Despite its achievements, it is now inadequate both in scale and configuration, as the population of Norfolk has grown by approximately 220,000 in this time, multiplying demand, and in its current location it cannot be extended.

Already we’re in May and have enjoyed two meetings since the AGM. The first was a colourful jewellery-inspired demonstration by Jean Fordham who travelled to us from Nottingham in March.

The second was a well-attended workshop last month when Amanda Seales taught a technique using straight stems, such as Cornus, to make a grid in which to arrange flowers instead of using floral foam, which currently isn’t compostable, and of course it Ladies enjoying the Workshop in April saves money too.

The new hospice will be built adjacent to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and will have improved day care and outpatients’ facilities,

Artists get ready for Open Studios and Art Exhibition Preparations are well underway for the annual open studios event at barrington Farm day service centre at walcott.

Barry Skinner, 44, attends the centre’s supported Art Barn studio every week and is looking forward to welcoming visitors to the space and showing his work. “I’m happy to exhibit my work. I like to draw scenery and famous faces like Toyah and Bjork. I have autism. I taught myself how to draw and bring my own ideas. People should come here for Open Studios – it will do you the world of good and you might find something really interesting!”

The exhibition will feature drawings, paintings textiles and sculpture with prices for all budgets. There is also a special event this year called the Happy Cafe. This will take place on Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 May, Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 June from 2pm - 4pm and offers the public the chance to have a fun and informal cuppa and homemade cake with the artists.

Staff member Sarah Ballard says “Open Studios is a fantastic opportunity for local people to visit to this unique art centre. There are very few places like it in the UK. We don’t expect visitors to buy anything (though it’s great if they do!) – it is more about people seeing how each individual makes their art in this shared space and engaging with the artists. Barry is one of 30 artists here who work hard all year but also face challenges in exhibiting their work. Open Studios also allows us to create an accessible exhibition outside of a traditional gallery environment and gives everyone an equal platform to show their work and

The Woodgate Nursery garden show will take place this year at the Nursery in Aylsham on 8 and 9 June between 10am – 4.30pm. The show will feature over 60 exhibitors with a wide variety of craft items on display and for sale.

The features of the show include the new floral marquee demonstrating stunning floral displays.

The show will aim to build on the success of last year’s event which welcomed more than 5,000 people. There is a £1 voluntary gate entrance donation (per person), with the money benefiting our 2019 chosen charities – the Aylsham Scouts and the Aylsham Roman Project.

The Woodgate Garden Show takes place from 10am to 4.30pm at Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham on Saturday, 8 June and Sunday 9 June.

Inspired by the Royal Horticulture Society’s (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, local garden designers will be battling for the people’ vote to be crowned the winner of the best garden design. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite garden for a chance to win £75 worth of gardening vouchers.

The show also includes a variety of food and drink stalls packed with tasty treats and savoury goods, as well as a craft marquee, filled with wonderful gift ideas and inspiration plus the garden exhibitors have all manner of gardening items for sale.

Not only can attendees pick up the latest flowers from the nursery, but they can learn more about their garden from the show’s friendly and knowledgeable exhibitors.

UPPER SHERINGHAM BELLS WILL BE RINGING OUT AGAIN SOON!

We are already training new bellringers at nearby St Andrew’s in Holt who will also help with ringing the bells at All Saints Upper Sheringham – but we are always keen to teach new people so if you ever fancied trying your hand at this ancient art get in touch! It’s nothing like you see on the television – you do not fly through the air, you do not need to be strong, you do not need to be musical or mathematical – you just need a sense of rhythm and a sense of humour!

We are delighted to report that the appeal is progressing so well that, if all goes to plan, we will be ringing the bells in time for Remembrance this year, and certainly

by Christmas. Remember to listen out for us!

We still need to raise the last bit of the money – please do consider helping us with this last push – what better legacy than to be able to say “I helped those bells ring out again”.

As we start dismantling the fixtures and fittings prior to the bells being taken to the bell works in Dorset, we will have a few items we could sell as mementoes of this project – we will have some clappers, chiming hammers, pulley blocks and an odd selection of handbells in varying conditions. Get in touch if you would like more information or would like to make an offer for anything or come and have a look at what we have. We won’t charge extra for the rust and dust!! The photo shows an example of a clapper (from a different church, we haven’t removed ours yet) and the actual handbells and pulley blocks and other random items that we are offering.

Another exciting bit of news is that we have been accepted into the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ scheme in their stores in Sheringham and Mundesley– throughout May and June we will be one of their chosen charities so please remember to pick up your blue token at the till and vote for us!

Model Railway Open Day

Broadland Model Railway Club is hosting an Open Day on Sunday 26 May at Hoveton Village Hall, 30 Stalham Rd, Hoveton, Norwich NR12 8DU from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

Aylsham Singers’ Spring Concert

Following a recent recruitment drive, several new members have joined the Aylsham Singers choir and are now looking forward to performing in a Spring Concert on 18 May.

Thanks to the generosity of North Walsham Town Council and North Walsham Community Shop it has been possible to deliver to local residents a personal invitation to the Big Bash, to be held on Saturday afternoon 18 May at North Walsham Community Centre and Library from 1.30pm until 4.30pm.

The title of this concert is ‘Beyond the Sea’. It will include a wide range of songs by popular composers and other less well-known but, nonetheless, lovely songs. In addition to performances by the full choir, there will be soloist and instrumental pieces. Proceeds from this concert are being donated to ‘Shelter’ - a charity aimed at supporting the homeless.

This event will introduce local people of all ages to the wide range of activities and opportunities that are available to them in the town.

It is for all who would like to become more involved in their community, or wish to have support to enable them to join in and make a contribution.

Over 40 stands will be there covering topics such as fitness and health; volunteering; social activities and recreation; care support and assistive technology. 9 workshops will be held, covering themes as diverse as Pets as Therapy, First Aid Community Champion programme, 4women Outreach service and Music Mirrors – an innovative way, using music, to awaken memories in people with dementia.

Organisations and groups that have been unable to book a stall can still send their information to the Community Shop, 1 Market Place, North Walsham.

Breaking the impasse... resolving conflict using mediation techniques

The seemingly interminable failure of MPs to agree Britain’s withdrawal agreement from the EU is typical of many intractable disputes. At some point in our lives, most of us will find ourselves at odds with someone over something. Each person will have their own ideas about what’s right (usually based on what’s most important to them) but that can result in both parties being totally unable to agree an outcome – and a stalemate ensues.

Breaking that impasse can seem difficult, if not impossible. And that’s where mediation comes in. A form of dispute resolution used to prevent (or conclude) court proceedings. Here are ten useful techniques used in mediation to help find a settlement:

1. PARTICIPATION It’s important that both parties are willing to engage in the process, can put forward proposals as well as consider any proposals received.

2. EVIDENCE Both parties must be upfront and make available all key documentary evidence – so each side can understand the other’s position.

3. STATE YOUR POSITION Make your position clear at the outset, as it may be that one party has misinterpreted the other’s position.

Explain what you believe to be right and what you hope to achieve.

4. WORK TOWARDS A SETTLEMENT Initially, each party’s aim will be to win, but it’s important to realise that resolution isn’t going to be a ‘win’ for one and a ‘loss’ for another – it will be a compromise that enables both parties to move on.

The small village of Itteringham near Aylsham has a hidden gem at the heart of the community.

The Village Shop has been in existence since 1637 providing the locals with goods and services. It was once owned by Lord Walpole’s estate and the freehold was sold off in 1996. At the time, a meeting was held in the village and the decision made to lease the business from private owners so that the shop could continue.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the shop being opened as a community business.

Today it is run by a combination of paid members of staff, a part time postmistress, and lots of volunteers who freely give their time to ensure the shop continues to be a valuable resource for the village and surrounding area.

The shop and cafe are supported by many loyal customers and is a favourite with cyclists and walkers. It has won awards including an East Anglia Countryside Alliance Award. The shop also supports 55 local producers and firms by selling their products.

Having been threatened with closure, the 2017 Save Our Shop campaign concluded with NNDC stepping in to purchase the premises and secure the shop’s future.

The committee that run the shop have a variety of plans regarding how to take the shop forwards in the years to come. Inevitably fundraising is essential to make these plans reality.

To that end, the Itteringham Open Gardens event is taking place on 2 June, from 11am – 5pm, entry to around 10 beautiful gardens is just £5, including a guide map which is available from the Village Hall.

As well as viewing the gardens there will be a pop-up ice cream kiosk in the bus shelter, local produce and light refreshments to buy at the Village Hall and teas at the shop’s cafe.

All proceeds from the day will go to keeping this little gem open for business!

Aylsham Open Gardens Weekend a record number of private gardens will be open for the public to enjoy in aylsham over the weekend of 1 and 2 June. seventeen are open on saturday and 19 on sunday.

You will be able to stroll through woodland, gaze into ponds and pools and sit in courtyard gardens.

The route also takes you passed the preserved World War Two ‘Pill Box’ at Bure Meadows which is surrounded by a commemorative garden.

As well as planting ideas you can take home inspiration on the use of garden sculpture, managing a wormery to make fertiliser, novel ideas on disguising bins and growing fruit and vegetables.

When you need a rest sit and enjoy the delicious teas, cakes, ice-cream and light lunches that will be available.

by Aylsham in Bloom. Money raised from ticket sales enables the volunteers to continue funding the Bloom planting around the town. This year’s charities include the Norfolk Heart Trust, Oxfam, Aylsham Methodist Church and the Aylsham Care Trust.

Tickets will be on sale on the open days from 9.30am from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard.

The cost is £5 for one day and £8 for a weekend ticket. Those aged 16 and under are free.

Poppy went back to the vets once she had finished the course of antibiotics she was taking and because the head tilt had not gone completely, she has another course of treatment and will be going back once this is completed. She is a very gentle little cat and enjoys watching the world pass by her pen.

When cats and kittens leave us for their new homes, we always advise their new family what type of food they have been eating and the type of cat litter they are used to. We always suggest they initially continue to use the same food as any change can upset their digestive system and can lead to the cat having diarrhoea. It is always better to introduce these changes gradually to avoid upsets. Similarly, with cat litter, they will have been used to either the clay lump or wood chip (depending on which fosterer they are with) and together with all the changes they experience when going to a new home, may not use the litter tray if the contents are unfamiliar to them. Again, introducing the litter you wish to use in future gradually, will make life easier for both you and your new family member.

Under the Animal Welfare Act all pet owners have a duty of care to provide their pets with a suitable environment and diet where they can behave normally and also ensure they are protected from pain, suffering injury and disease. Such was not the case for one little stray we took in recently. Quinsy was in a dreadful state, very underweight and with matted fur. During the two days he was with us his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the vets where sadly he had to be put to sleep as it was believed he was a victim of FELV. His fosterer was so concerned she did feel he could have died before actually seeing the vet.

Obviously, his owners had not shown a duty of care for him and had they been identified, we would have referred this to the RSPCA who would have probably prosecuted them. This poor little cat did not

deserve such irresponsible owners and they certainly should not be owning any animals.

Hedgehog Haven

Out during the day, he was found by a dog walker just around the corner from where I live so his finder ran to find me.

He's a small hog just 270grms. Another one who has probably been struggling through the winter, he is slowly gaining weight, but will be quite some time before he is big enough to release.

Zombies invade North Walsham Live Aid

North Walsham’s annual charity rock event came to a gory end when the stage was invaded by the notorious Bloodshake Chorus with their own special blend of rock music.

They were preceded by local band Coast with a great opening of the show followed by local heroes Raw Edge continuing their tradition of playing at every North Walsham Live Aid since the start.

Police tribute band The Omegamen took the evening up to the memorabilia auction with a great set.

During the band changeovers Martin Day kept the party going with his excellent acoustic music. A Pink Floyd tribute guitar was the star lot of the auction, signed by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, the hammer falling at £1325. £300 was paid for a gig flyer signed by Francis Rossi and the late Rick Parfitt.

A further 33 lots went under the hammer of Charles Horner-Glister in this popular annual rock auction.

The evening was brought to a memorable ending with a great show from Bloodshake Chorus.

The Duke of Sussex has written a letter to the Year 6 children at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham congratulating them on their hard work raising awareness about endangered wildlife.

This year’s event was organised by The Music Hut’s Bex and Robin with event originator Barry Holden dealing with the auction and publicity.

A massive thank you goes to all the bands and volunteers on the night, Chris’s crew, H, Steve and Paul on security, to Tich and crew of Rhythmic Sound and Lighting, not forgetting the hard working bar staff and local organisations and shops for their continued support and of course everyone who turns up to support the event every year.

The children have been busy learning about conservation, endangered wildlife and raising funds for the WWF. The Duke of Sussex believes in protecting endangered wildlife and was ‘immensely touched’ that the children had written to him and wished the class every success with the project.

At this event we have raised a grand total of £9000 for this year’s children’s charity which is East Anglian Children’s Hospice to purchase the equipment needed for their dedicated music therapy department at their new purpose-built location, ‘The Nook’.

Next year’s event will be on Saturday 18 April 2020.

Aylsham Heritage Centre

The exhibition in the Heritage Centre called ‘Aylsham Pubs and Inns’ has already had a good number of visitors.

To accompany the exhibition a small leaflet has been produced which takes you on a walk around the town to visit the site of all the pubs that have traded in the town. The leaflet is free, so why not pop in to collect one and make the most of the warmer weather with a stroll around the town.

We are looking for some more volunteers. Do you have a couple of hours to spare a month?

Photography Exhibition at Norfolk Wildlife Trust Centre

An exhibition of landscape photography by local photographer, Paul Burnham will be held at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Centre in Cley from 15 May until 28 May, 10am - 5pm daily.

School seeks old photos and uniform for 70th celebrations

A Cromer school is on the hunt for photos and uniforms from years gone by as it gets ready to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

Paul trained as a photographer then changed career to work as a warden on nature reserves throughout England and Wales using his photography to help illustrate wildlife and the conservation message.

He recently had an exhibition at the Green Britain Centre in Swaffham on pollution and the devastating effect of balloons on wildlife.

He works mainly in black and white using the ‘magic of light’ to transform the everyday scene into something special.

A day of celebrations will take place on Saturday 6 July with staff, pupils, and families past and present invited to come and meet old friends, share memories, and view the exhibition.

Applications now open for Holt Festival Art Prizes

Sir John Hurt Art Prize, new prize for young artists and Open Studios invite entries One of the east of England’s top art prizes, the Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize, is now inviting entries for the 2019 contest. The winner will win a cash prize of £1,750 and their entry will also be exhibited at Norwich’s internationally renowned Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

The leading North Norfolk Festival, has also announced a new prize specifically aimed at younger artists.

The Sworders Art Prize is open to artists between 16 and 23. It carries a prize of £750 for the winner, who will also be offered a commissionfree exhibition by Holt’s new contemporary art space The Gallery in Lees Yard.

Both prizes are open to artists everywhere and in previous years there have been entries from across the region and beyond. All types of visual art are welcome and the closing date for entries to both competitions is midnight Sunday 16 June. Artists from North Norfolk get set to invite the public into their studios

Hundreds of artists from across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of norfolk & norwich open studios 2019.

The event, which has firmly established itself as one of the biggest open studio schemes in the country, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year.

Happisburgh Art Trail, North Walsham to Southrepps Art Trail, The Smallburgh Small Art Trail, Wells-Next-the-Sea Art Trail and 10 artists, 7 locations.

Throughout the duration of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios many of the artists will be holding additional events, demonstrations and workshops.

The 16-day celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community runs from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June.

The free event will see more than 430 artists taking part across 250 venues throughout the county opening their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice. In North Norfolk, 75 artists and nine groups will be taking part.

Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques including mosaic, ceramics, printing, jewellery, textiles, painting, papercutting, glass work, sculpture and wood turning.

As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, numerous Norfolk schools will be exhibiting in the scheme. Art Trails will also be in place across the county, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way.

In North Norfolk five school groups are taking part (Antingham & Southrepps Primary School, Hindringham C of E Primary School, Walsingham C of E Primary School, Kelling C of E Primary School and Blakeney C of E Primary School) and six art trails have been organised by artists participating in the scheme. Alongside the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios fortnight, North Norfolk artists will be hosting three taster exhibitions at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty (11 May to 9 June), Cromer Library (2 – 30 May) and North Walsham Library (13 May – 10 June).

Chess Challenge has finished

News from Broadland Chess Well just this week I have returned from a fortnight in warmer climes. I have accompanied my chess playing other half to a tournament in the beautiful island of Rhodes, so there are advantages of being a chess widow. Roy Hughes was playing in the European Seniors World Championship, with a list of competitors including several Grand and International Masters from all corners of Europe. I have attached a couple of pics of the event. Although Roy was not one of the medal winners he did receive a grading prize for the best performance by an English player, presented by Stewart Reuben from the English Chess Federation.

A vibrant, welcoming school “where my child can thrive and do well” Ofsted praises Norfolk primary school’s ‘inquisitive learners’ and ‘strong nurturing and caring culture’

Aldborough Primary School in North Norfolk has just had an Ofsted inspection during which it was praised for its standards of teaching and the rich curriculum it encourages. The inspection reported that the school “continues to be good,” praising the changes that had been made to maintain and improve its high standards.

Ofsted described the school as ‘vibrant’, with a ‘strong nurturing and caring culture,’ adding that all teaching staff know every pupil very well and concentrate on ensuring that their individual academic, social and emotional needs are met.

“Consequently, pupils make good progress,” the inspector said, adding that one parent had commented, “This is a school where my child can thrive and do well.”

Ofsted noted what it called the school’s ‘wonderful woodland setting,’ praising the way the school is ‘determined to make the most of the opportunities this opens up for pupils.’ The inspector added, “Outdoor learning is encouraged. I saw learning outside where, in a drama session, pupils turned

themselves into a variety of tree shapes, while pupils involved in a mathematical investigation estimated measurements with liquids.”

The inspector praised the classrooms’ ‘purposeful atmosphere’, where ‘pupils are inquisitive learners.’ The school is committed to providing a rich curriculum, and the inspector found pupils spoke ‘enthusiastically’ about the wide range of learning different opportunities provided, including sport, music, languages, art and drama. “They also told me about the ‘science, art and writing week’,” said the inspector. “It gave them the opportunity to learn about the sea, through science-based exploration recorded in art and writing.”

Reading has been a strength of the school for

some time. In 2016 it received a letter from the then Minister of State for School Standards, Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, congratulating staff and pupils on their standard of reading, which put them in the top 1% of schools nationally.

The Ofsted report speaks of the pupils’ love of reading and their ability to hold well-developed discussions about areas such as characterisation and genre.

“Obviously we are delighted by the great things Ofsted has to say about our school,” says Alison Read, Head Teacher.

“We are working collaboratively to implement the report’s recommendations, enhancing the learning opportunities already provided by our talented team.

“The success of a school like Aldborough is all about community and team spirit – I’m so delighted that the Ofsted report highlights the hard work of pupils and staff and the fantastic support we receive from parents, governors, and the wider community.”

North Walsham Table Tennis Alpha exit cup at semi-final stage

The first semi-final of the Handicap Doubles Cup saw Aylsham Norada's John Hall (42), Roger Crouch (44) and Tom Mountain (42) host North Walsham Alpha's Tom BaldockYaxley (5), Andy Beane (10) and Phil Stone (28).

Norada won the opening two battles 61-37 and 61-49 with Mountain producing some great controlled forehand drives all evening.

Baldock-Yaxley and Beane (7) pulled one

back for Alpha with a 61-58 win against Hall and Crouch (43).

Baldock-Yaxley and Stone (16) then took on Crouch and Mountain (43) with Alpha rallying well in the middle of the clash and Stone producing some good counter-hitting reaction shots, but he made some vital mistakes at the tail end of the contest as the consistent play of Norada saw them to a 61-57 win.

Hall and Mountain (42) moved Norada one win from the final with a 61-51 defeat of

Baldock-Yaxley and Beane (7) and the Aylsham team's 5-1 win was sealed as Hall and Crouch (43) beat Beane and Stone (19) 61-52.

The result means that somewhat unusually there were be no representation from North Walsham in any of the four Cup finals this season.

The Raiders won their final two games too, finishing top of Eastern Counties Plate.

On the first weekend in May five of the Club's teams were due to be in action at "Norfolk's Big Rugby Weekend" with the Vikings playing Norwich in the Norfolk Senior Cup Final and the Raiders meeting Holt 1st XV in the Final of the Intermediate Cup.

Two fine wins for the Vikings to end their memorable League season, their first under Johnny Marsters.

After beating HAC 52-10 at home they visited Fullerians in Watford for what was expected to be a close match: the hosts, needing a win to escape relegation, had won four of their last five.

The Under 14s,15s and 16s were all playing in the age group Finals.

The Vikings though again showed their quality to win 49 - 0 with eight tries, including a Jim Riley hat trick and two each from James Knight and Will Swart (pictured). Defeated only by the sides above them, they finished third in London One North on 109, just six behind Colchester but 29 ahead of fourth placed Haberdashers. Rochford were promoted with a 100% record, but Colchester missed out losing to their counterparts from London One South, Brighton, in the play-off match.
