Appeal for help to revive wartime hospital flags

Faded flags that flew over wartime hospitals are set to “fly” again thanks to a friend of the current care complex.

They once marked the location of two temporary First World War hospitals in North Walsham where the Red Cross nursed injured troops. Today the white and red pennants have turned grey with age, and languish in the parish church where they have been stored for years.

But a joint initiative between the vicar and the Friends of North Walsham War Memorial Hospital is providing replicas to remind people of the town’s nursing heritage.And it has been made possible by a donation from a well-known local shopkeeper and musician with connections to both organisations.

Appeal for help to revive wartime hospital flags

A collection in memory of musician Denis Payne, who died in November 2016 aged 86, is being used to provide two £300 replicas for the church where he used to play keyboards at funerals, and where he gave visitors tours of its history. And the Friends organisation is buying one to put in the hospital which cared for Mr Payne, who ran the family sweet shop in town for many years, when he was ill in later life.

The church flags will go in the war memorial chapel which honours the 99 men who served their country but did not return home.

The Rev Paul Cubitt said it was fitting to get the flags revived for 2018, the centenary of the end of the Great War. “We are really grateful for the Payne family for donating the money in memory of Denis to make this happen,” he added.

Both Red Cross auxiliary hospitals were on Mundesley Road. One, Wellingtonia, is now a private house. The other, Lower House, was demolished and is now Greenway Close.

The modern complex was opened in 2012, on the site of the former 1924 hospital which was built in memory of the 1914-18 war victims.

Mr Jarvis said "When Mr Payne’s widow heard about the old flags she was pleased to donate Denis’s collection to get two of them restored in his memory, and the Friends were happy to provide one for the

hospital to highlight the town’s connections with wartime nursing.”

North Walsham Probus Club Fire Service - Speaker - Station Manager John Baker

John began his talk by explaining that he was originally a self-employed joiner becoming a Retained Fire Fighter at Kings Lynn in 1985 and named the Norfolk stations at which he has served.

Eventually he became a whole time firefighter serving at Cromer, Kings Lynn, Fakenham, Bowthorpe, Thetford, Great Yarmouth and now North Walsham Station Manager.

He explained the Fire Service Brigade structure in Norfolk. They have four districts, 42 stations and 63 appliances. Various stations have specialist roles. All 999 calls are tied in with Herefordshire where future plans are to combine stations with the police.

The Norfolk Division attends approximately 10,000 emergencies every year - commercial, domestic, field, forest, vehicle, bin, and chimney.

Also, Special Service emergencies such as road traffic collisions/water rescue (using rigid inflatable boats), rescue from heights and confined spaces plus animal rescues and assisting other agencies with flooding and suicides, also breaking into locked premises.

When he started in 1985 at Cromer, the kit then was plastic leggings, donkey jacket, cork helmet, wellington boots and builders rubber gloves. Now the kit includes robust leather boots and preformed plastic helmets. They carry neat pocket sized thermal Imaging cameras and have at their disposal EPCO hydraulic hand pumps, cutters, spreaders, rams and air bags lifting up to 70tons.

Training of new retained fire fighters begins with a two weeks induction course, then later after six months, a two weeks course on breathing apparatus. Whole time firefighters undertake the same subjects in greater depth on a twelve weeks course. Bowthorpe carry out specialist training in BASF equipment, driver training and trauma care. Hi my name is Stephen and I am raising money for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Having worked alongside children for nearly nine years now, I felt it was time to do something to support those who don’t have the life they deserve.

As a child, I grew up in a loving family home and was cared for and loved deeply. Sadly, not all children have such privileges.

In 2016, it was recorded that over 58,000 children in the UK suffered some form of abuse - 58,000!! This unbelievably high number shocked and saddened me so, so much!

The NSPCC work tirelessly supporting and counselling children who have suffered some form of abuse; whether it be physical, emotional or sexual.

The Budget announced on the 22nd November 2017 brought an immediate change to the initial stamp duty threshold for first time buyers, meaning that anyone buying their first home won’t be liable for stamp duty if the purchase price is below £300,000. For more expensive areas such as London, additional relief is available for purchases up to £500,000.00.

It is predicted that the stamp duty changes will help up to 95% of first time buyers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and up to 80% in London who are purchasing properties beneath the £300,000 threshold.

First time buyers will need to declare that they have never owned a property, either in the UK or abroad. The declaration will be contained in a Stamp Duty Return form, which can be prepared by a solicitor

MP opens new Dementia Inclusive Café in Mundesley

Last month Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, met with customers and said a few words to mark the opening of Open Doors, a new café for the elderly and those with complex needs.

The café was initiated by Eleanor Jones, Wendy Fredericks, and other members of Mundesley Parish church supported by the Revd Andrew Jones.

The café was made possible through fundraising on the part of many local businesses and charities, including Friends of Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat, Mundesley Fish and Fry, Affinity Digital Agents, Trunch Village Store, Aviva and TESCO, amongst others.

Their vision for a community café came early in 2017 when they noticed the need for support and friendships amongst the local community’s older generations, and for social environments which were inclusive for those with additional needs.

Eleanor and Revd Andrew Jones, whose daughter has multiple learning difficulties, have personally experienced the complications carers can face taking their loved ones to public and social places.

I lost my 76 year brother just before Christmas. His last years were spent in a care home in London. When I got back to Salthouse where I live I was in my garden watching the seagulls thinking he never had this joy. I wrote a song ‘he never saw the seagulls fly’.

Hickling Broad & later Stubb Mill for Winter Raptor Roost on 18 February 12:30pm – 5pm this event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders.

We will first look for winter species, particularly wildfowl and waders, at Hickling Broad (a walk of perhaps an hour around the reserve reed-bed) and then walk to Stubb Mill to watch the winter raptor & crane roost. This is a lunchtime and afternoon trip.

We will meet at the Hickling NWT car-park NR12 0BW at 12.30 for an initial al fresco lunch (bring your own!). The grid reference is TG 428 222. The NWT Visitor Centre has picnic tables and toilets. Currently their web site does not indicate any opening hours for the cafe.

The afternoon raptor-watch is at Stubb Mill, which is reached with a moderate walk from the NWT car-park. Stout footwear or wellies are essential as some areas are wet underfoot. Warm windproof clothing is also essential because the raptor watch involves standing in the open, possibly for a couple

February 7.30pm - 9:30pm - since his retirement in 2002, Dick Newell has devoted much time to those aerial masters of the sky – swifts. Their noisy acrobatic flights over our towns and villages for just a few short weeks in summer have become increasingly less common in recent years, prompting Dick to find out what could be done to reverse their decline in Britain. As a result, many projects have been implemented and ideas generated, some of which are documented on actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk.

In 2016 Dick and ‘Action for Swifts’ were given a Marsh Award for Innovative Ornithology. His talk will cover the lifestyle of Common Swifts, the reasons for their decline, their migrations, and ideas for nest boxing. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX.

Charity Night on the Pier

On 10 March Cromer Pier will host the 6th charity night that Graham Jones has organised and it promises to be an exceptionally good show, which will include local Comedian Pat Nearney.

In all, Graham estimates that some £12,000 has been raised for various charities, including Sheringham Little Theatre Stars Appeal, Help for Heroes, Air Ambulance, and the current beneficiaries Break, The Benjamin Foundation and Playing for Cake.

Graham is grateful that the musicians give their time for free and the famous Cromer pier theatre provide a heavily discounted use of the theatre. He said “They are a great bunch of people working at the Pier who are so helpful – I particularly appreciate the skills of the technical people.”

One unusual entertainer in this year show will be Russian Musician Boris Konoshenko who currently lives in Swafield. He will accompany popular mezzo soprano Maggy Day, a singer who has been influenced by such as Bette Midler, Eva Cassidy and the soulful sounds of Billie Holiday. Boris Konoshenko will also sing a Russian Folk song in English.

internationally acclaimed for their groundbreaking immersive work.

Artistic Director of Les Enfants Terribles Oliver Lansley said “We are delighted to be working with the National Trust at Blickling Estate to create these visceral immersive installation pieces which connect Blickling’s renowned library to the stories of book collections and individual volumes around the world. This project has been made possible by the support of Arts Council England, through Trust New Art, a contemporary arts programme inspired by National Trust places.

A third of children are living in poverty in North Norfolk, new research shows

Data released today by the End Child Poverty coalition shows that 27% of children in North Norfolk live in child poverty, compared to over half of children in the poorest areas and less than a tenth in the richest.

New statistics show the extent of child poverty across the UK broken down by constituency, local authority and ward. In North Norfolk 27.43% (3,656 children) of children live in poverty, similar to the national average of 26.96% (3,702,020).

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, said “These figures are seriously concerning. Something is really wrong with the way our country is run if the UK, one of the wealthiest in the world, can’t ensure the well-being of a quarter of its children. The Government needs to seriously consider how it is prioritising its spending, and the effect that is having on future generations.�

The new figures reveal that there are now constituencies within the UK where

more than half of children are growing up in poverty - compared to one in ten, in the areas with the lowest child poverty rates.

The figures also show that some of the most deprived areas of the UK have seen the biggest increases in child poverty since the coalition's local child poverty figures for December 2015. Increases of 10 percentage points in some areas demonstrate the growing crisis of child poverty in the UK.

Antiques Roadshow to be filmed in Cromer BBC One show will be filmed on pier and promenade BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow – regularly watched by six million people on Sunday evenings – will be filmed on Cromer Pier and promenade in May.

The show, one of BBC One’s most popular programmes, attracts an average of 3,000 to 4,000 visitors, spread through a full day. A day’s filming creates two shows for broadcast a few months after shooting. The show tours the country, visiting iconic houses, parks and gardens.

This will be the first time the show has been filmed on a pier.

The event on 24 May will boost local business, increase footfall in the town in the week before half term and put the North Norfolk District Council owned Cromer Pier on the international television stage.

Cromer Pier is owned and maintained by North Norfolk District Council. The Council is spending £275,000 in 2018 to improve the Pier facilities and a further £150,000 on annual maintenance surveys for the next five years. North Norfolk District Council is proud to be a custodian of this award winning national treasure.

Masons Cheque Boosts MS Day Centre

Freemasons from the North Walsham Lodge of Unanimity No 102 have been raising funds for ‘LAMS’ (Life And Multiple Sclerosis), which is a day centre for people with the condition. It meets every week in Southrepps Village Hall and is an activity of the North Norfolk Group of the MS Society.

Worshipful Master Bob Wilkinson, who has just completed his year in the Chair, choose LAMS as his charity for the year and was very pleased to be able to go along to the day centre recently and present a cheque for £3,400.

Extra Care Home Services Ltd nominated for national social care award

Extra Care Home Services Ltd has been nominated for a Skills for Care Accolades award that celebrates the outstanding achievements of the very best adult social care employers in England.

They have been nominated in the Best Employer under 50 category which recognises Extra Care Home Services for the work they do supporting the people who access their services. Extra Care Home Services provide practical and personal care support to individuals in their own homes in the North Walsham area.

They won two awards last year at the Norfolk Care Awards 2017 for “Motivational Leadership” and “Rising Star” and this year they are also shortlisted finalist in the category “Excellent Person Centred Care and Support” and will find out if they have won at the Gala Night at Sprowston Manor on 22 February.

Sarah Thompson – Owner and Registered Manager said “when we found out that we had made the final of the Skills for Care Accolades we were delighted because it is a reward on a national stage for all our team, and the hard work they put in to make sure we offer high quality services for the people we work with. Public views sought on improvements to Pretty Corner Woods Win a free family swim by filling in survey

North Norfolk District Council would like to hear the public’s views about what improvements could be made to Pretty Corner Woods.

The 165 acres of woodland and heathland near Sheringham are owned partly by North Norfolk District Council and partly by The Woodland Trust.

Both parties would like to know the Pretty Corner Boardwalk public’s views on the woods, including how often they visit, what they currently use the woods for and what facilities they would like to see added.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said “We want to hear people’s views on this lovely piece of woodland. Five years ago we saw the completion of an investment scheme which included a number of improvements such as car park resurfacing, a wheelchair friendly path, waymarked trails, a boardwalk, leaflets and events.

Following the success of that investment, we believe there is still huge potential for future investment at Pretty Corner Woods to make it an even better place to visit. Public participation is a vital part of making this woodland even better and determining our next steps.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The new cats mentioned last time have adapted well to being in care and we have had lots of interested in them with one already having been offered a new home. Stephanie is now contacting those interested and to be fair to people deals with all enquiries in the order she receives their telephone calls. If, therefore, there is more than one person interested in a particular cat she will check whether the first caller is able to offer the home and environment the cat requires before contacting the next person. If the first caller and Stephanie believe the cat would be suitable a time and date will be arranged for them to visit the cat and if all goes well arrangements are made for the cat to go to its new home. Only then can Stephanie contact them to advise whether the cat is still available.

Unfortunately people who contact via the website are advised they do need to call they can on occasion be too late to offer a home to a particular cat.

Over the years we have seen many cats and although we love them all while with us, some are remembered over the years because of their history. One such cat was Ivy, a dear little black and white cat handed into our care nearly 10 years ago as a stray. As she was a stray she was blood tested for FIV/FELV at the vets and unfortunately the test came back positive. A further test was then carried out by an outside laboratory as recommended by Cats Protection and although we have often then been advised the second test shows a negative result, unfortunately in Ivy’s this was not the case. Being FIV positive Ivy needed a home where she would be kept inside to prevent her infecting other cats or because of her compromised immune system, being infected by other cats. It was not long before a lovely couple who lived in an area where it was not safe to allow a cat to roam offered her a home. As the lady of the house had health problems, having Ivy to love and care for was a great comfort to her. Over the years we have had updates on Ivy from her new family and until recently she had been

Sadly, last week we learnt that she had died. Ivy was approximately 12 years old and had 10 goods years being a much loved member of the household. For those whose home situation prevents them from having a cat which can go outside, a cat that has tested positive for FIV is a possibility.

We have re-homed several over the years and all have been very loving cats with nice gentle natures.

Hedgehog Haven

Pictured is Grumpy who came in on 24 October as an autumn juvenile weighing 240grms.

She took a long time to gain any weight but now is nice and healthy. In spring she will be going to a home to live in an enclosed area as unfortunately she has a sight problem.

My latest arrival came in on 27 January.

Corton was found in a garden under a bush at only 300grms.

I don't know how he had managed to survive for so long.

I have given him a course of antibiotics and he is slowly gaining weight, so hopefully he will be big enough for a release in April.

Early rises will be starting to awake from hibernation.

… Guide Dogs for the Blind have set up a support network for people who are blind or partially sighted in North Norfolk called the North Walsham Guide Dog Forum.

Guide Dogs for the Blind has a network of locally based support forums across the UK. North Norfolk has its very own forum called the North Walsham Guide Dog Forum (NWGDF). This group meets every 3 months in North Walsham.

Chris Waller from Sheringham is visually impaired and a newly appointed volunteer for Guide Dogs as media handler for NWGDF. He commented "The purpose of the forums is to have a community group who can learn from key speakers, share and learn information and to raise issues which maybe concerning those with visual impairments in their local area. The forum can look at ways to resolve those issues with support via community engagement staff from Guide Dogs Organisation, and other subject matter experts. There is also a social element after the forum as some of the attendees enjoy a natter, spot of lunch and coffee in the pub afterwards".

On 24 July Age UK and also the CEO of Norfolk and Norwich Blind Society will be our speakers and on 30 October our theme will be Fire Safety.

Chris commented "Although new to the role, I can already appreciate the value of this forum to our community for those sighted and those not. The enthusiasm and willingness of speakers attending the forum is a reflection of the great community spirit in North Norfolk, working together to achieve results. But we'd like to see even more people attend the forum, and learn even more" Please come along and find out more!

Graeme’s 10,000 kilometre cycle challenge

Former North Norfolk Police Officer, Graeme Sadd is cycling 10,000 kilometres during 2018 to raise awareness and funds for Combat Stress. Graeme’s aim is to raise £10,000, £1 for every kilometre cycled.

Graeme was born in Norwich and educated at Eaton(CNS) school. Graeme served in the Royal Air Force for 23 years and flew on the E3D Sentry aircraft, based at RAF Waddington Lincoln. During his service he flew as part of the NATO peace keeping force during the Bosnia/Kosovo wars. Graeme retired from the Royal Air Force in 2001 and joined the Norfolk Police force serving in North Norfolk for 8 years.

In 2016 Graeme was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) relating

to his time served in the RAF. Graeme was referred to Combat Stress and received treatment for his mental health issues and is currently learning to live with his illness. As part of the recovery program and to raise awareness for the Combat Stress Charity, Graeme is undertaking this cycling challenge.

During the year Graeme plans to participate in several charity long distance cycle rides, including the London Nightride and Tour du Norfolk

Combat Stress is a charity which helps service personnel who are suffering mental health issues, including PTSD. PTSD is a crippling illness, which many service personnel who have seen, or been in contact with military conflict, suffer from. Many, like Graeme will not even realise that they are suffering a mental illness or are afraid to admit that they have a problem. Combat Stress addresses these issues and helps service personnel regain a near normal life again. All funds raised will go directly to Combat Stress.

New Loco for North Norfolk Railway

North Norfolk Railway PLC (NNR) is very happy to announce the arrival at Weybourne Shed of the ex S&D 2-8-0 – 7F – no. 53809.

The locomotive was a regular performer on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and has been in the ownership of the 13809 Preservation Society for 43 years. After carrying out winter maintenance the locomotive will be appearing regularly on trains between Sheringham and Holt.

Hugh Harkett, Managing Director at the NNR commented “This iconic engine is much coveted and has been in our sights for a long time now. We are so pleased that the owning group led by John Moorhouse has consented to loaning the engine to us here. Indeed we hope she will become a long term

resident in Norfolk”.

The 13809 Preservation Society based hitherto at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley have worked hard over the years developing 53809 into a very reliable locomotive. John Moorhouse said “After completing a major overhaul our loco was able to attend the West Somerset Railway Gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of the S&DJR closure in 2016. The members of the Society realised that the time had arrived to accept help with the continued maintenance of 53809. Following two very enjoyable visits to the NNR for their Galas an offer of such help was discussed. This has been developed into, what we hope, will be a long term

relationship. The NNR, using their now excellent facilities, will undertake ongoing maintenance assisted as and when possible by the experience gained by the 13809 Preservation Society members during the last 43 years of ownership”.

The North Norfolk Railway is based at Sheringham in Norfolk and runs trains regularly between there and Holt as well as the occasional ‘North Norfolkman’ dining trains to and from Cromer. A full week’s service is available from April through to October and generally at weekends in other months.

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB

Having played League Badminton across Norfolk, it struck me as a real shame that North Walsham did not even have a Club, let alone a competing League Team.

For years there have been social badminton sessions at North Walsham Sports Centre on Monday and Friday evenings, producing a pool of competent players. So, the forms were filled, the fees paid and Walsham Warriors Badminton Club was created.

In their first year, having just one Men’s Team, they experienced many losses and had a rude awakening to League life, but it was exciting and fulfilling nonetheless. The Warriors are now in their second year and have two Men’s Teams and one Mixed Team competing in the Norwich & District League. The original Men’s Team has come on in leaps and bounds, already recording several wins this season, most recently beating Besthorpe 5-4 in a tense thriller in Attleborough.

Bradfield Cricket Club

Bradfield Cricket Club had an exciting and successful cricket season across all age ranges, boosted by new kids joining the youth teams from the age of 6 and upwards. Our enormously successful free cricket sessions are back in the North Walsham Sports Centre, just come along and have a try.

Sessions are played indoors with softball for beginners at the North Walsham Sports Centre.

KEEP FIT CLASSES AT ANTINGHAM VILLAGE HALL

First class will commence at 1pm on 1 March and will be run by Victory Sports with a qualified instructor. This class will be run for a two week period and will continue depending on support received.

All ages and abilities will be welcomed as the exercises will be tailored to the individual person and the price will be £3 per person.

These classes are being run in response to our village questionnaire when we asked you what you wanted from your village hall, although we would welcome everyone whether from the village or not.

Job Summary: To oversee the day to day running and development of the community programme including pastoral care, and to support the delivery of stated mission objectives for the Corps and the Salvation Army (There is an Occupational requirement for the post holder to be a practising Christian) Key Responsibilities: The role of Community manager is an inspirational and challenging one. It combines the management and development of the community programme including staff and volunteers with the pastoral and spiritual care of staff, volunteers and clients. They will manage, plan, monitor and evaluate a complex and developing community programme whilst ensuring the delivery of a high quality service for members of the community.

The successful candidate(s) will be able to demonstrate: They hold a relevant qualification in social or community work (DipSW or degree level). The candidate will have knowledge of health and safety, Microsoft Office, safeguarding and experience in a community setting. The candidate would also demonstrate active membership of a mainstream Christian Church.

Walsham Handicap Derby settled on one point play-off

The first round matches in the Handicap Cups have been completed as the line-up for the last sixteen were completed in both competitions.

NWSCB choose to opt out of Handicap competitions while NWSCC were drawn a first round bye in both Cups. In the singles NWSCE’s Ben Lester (40), James Lester (28) and Tom Wardle (42) hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane (22), Dennis Elliott (22 playing up and cup-tied) and Tom Baldock-Yaxley (16) with Ben Lester winning the opener against Beane 61-54. Baldcock-Yaxley later beat Ben 61-49 and each of the NWSCA team took a win against James Lester, however Tom Wardle took a fine maximum winning two games 61-58 before defeating Beane 61-48 to level the tie at 4-4. This set up a crucial clash between Ben Lester and Elliott and the decisive clash was settled on a deciding ‘golden point’ at 60-60 which was won by Beane to seal a 5-4 win for NWSCA by the slimmest margin. They will next play NWSCD

(who are also through in the doubles following a walkover) after the team of Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone won the match on the adjoining table against Swordfish’s Nigel Brady, Ray Amo and Shelley Betts. Brady and Amo opened with wins against Stone and Porritt respectively to take a 2-0 lead for the visitors but there was a maximum for Hook as NWSCD won the remaining contests to win 7-2 with golden point victories for both Hook and Stone against Amo (the latter in the final dead rubber). LCC Seal’s Hayden Kerr, Chris Francis and Peter Ratcliffe won 8-1 at home to NWSCF with Gudi Scham preventing the whitewash against Francis and Kerr winning a golden point against both Sarah Tudhope and Edna Stone.

In the Handicap Doubles Cup, NWSCE’s Tom Wardle (42), Andrew Weston (40) and Ben Lester (40) hosted LCC Lobster’s Chris Gould (33), Ian Kidger (45) and Tim Dawson (35).

Two contrasting games for the Vikings since the last article.

The last Saturday in January they made a long trip into the Chilterns, losing out 25 -7 to third placed Amersham & Chiltern. This very creditable result was followed by a resounding 64 - 0 home win over bottom placed South Woodham Ferrers, running in ten tries. With seven games left the Vikings were sixth in London One North with 56 points, two behind Eton Manor who have played a game less and three ahead of Old Priorians in seventh place; Brentwood (85) and Chingford (84) are way ahead at the top.

Crouch and Westgate won a golden point to take the opener from Westgate and Beane – later Westgate and Baldock-Yaxley beat Seaman and Mountain 61-60 as NWSCA won 5-2.

NWSCF’s Gudi Scham, Sarah Tudhope and Edna Stone hosted Aylsham Enterprise’s Danny Atkins, Ben Briggs and Andy Latham.

Enterprise’s experience showed especially with their serves as they came through 5-1 but a friendly evening was enjoyed by all.

The recently launched Girls Team is going from strength to strength.

Newcomers are very welcome - training is Sunday mornings 10am 12noon. Over 100 girls from local High Schools are coming to a Rugby Day at the Club on 28 February.
