Getting ‘down and dirty’ for charity

North Walsham based Home Care Agency Manager Sarah Thompson will be once again be getting ‘down and dirty’ this month when she takes part in the Race for Life Pretty Muddy Run on Saturday 13 May.

This will be the third year that Sarah has run in the race to raise funds for two charities which are very important to her: Cancer Research and North Walsham Community First Responders.

Sarah is herself a volunteer with the ambulance service as a CFR and coordinates the North Walsham and local groups.

CFRs are trained by the ambulance service to deal with life threatening emergency calls prior to the arrival of the ambulance crew. They rely solely on public donations to continue the vital work they do. Prior to undertaking her first run in 2015 Sarah herself was rushed into hospital and was unsure whether she would be well enough to run but determination and hard work paid off and she did and raised over £1000 on her first run.

PASTON SIXTH FORM COLLEGE STUDENTS’ TRIP TO ORFORD NESS

On 19 April Photography, Art and Media students at Paston Sixth Form College visited the National Trust nature reserve and historic military research facility on Orford Ness in Suffolk.

A short boat crossing from Orford Quay initiated a guided walk with a site ranger. The site has special significance not only because of its rich flora and fauna on the shingle ridges (we saw hare, deer, egrets, heron, cuckoos, birds of prey), but also because, since the First World War, the Ness has been a place of often top secret military research with now abandoned bunker-like laboratories and test sites, weathered and overgrown, slowly crumbling back into the natural shingle spit.

The location provided students with a rich variety of broad open vistas and strange architectural features as subject matter, steeped in history with clues to scientific and military developments from the First and Second World War, through to the Cold War and nuclear bomb technology. Themes from the second year photography exam paper such as “manufactured structures” were aptly relevant here and, as a bonus, the weather and light were perfect.

North Norfolk District boundary review recommendations published

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published its final recommendations for new electoral arrangements for North Norfolk.

The proposals are for North Norfolk to be represented by 40 district councillors in future, a decrease of eight.

The final recommendations propose that North Norfolk’s 40 councillors should represent eight two-councillor wards and 24 single-councillor wards across the district, from a present total of 14 two-member and 20 single-member wards. Overall this is a decrease in ward number from 34 to 32.

Changes to the boundaries of 29 wards are also recommended, with three wards (Briston, Poppyland and The Raynhams) remaining the same.

The new proposal for North Norfolk’s ward boundaries and members reflects the way our district has changed over the years and will ensure equality of representation for voters, as well as the increased ability to reflect ward issues and identities, and ensure fair workloads for our councillors.”

The report was released last month after the Commission reviewed information gathered via a district-wide consultation that ran from 6 December 2016 through to Monday 30 January 2017. The review was carried out to ensure wards in North Norfolk are in the best possible places to help the Council carry out its responsibilities effectively and to ensure the number of voters represented by each councillor is approximately the same across the district.

A spokesperson for the LGBCE said “We are extremely grateful to the people of North Norfolk who took the time and effort to send us their views. The Commission considered every piece of evidence it received before finalising these recommendations.”

Any changes recommended by the LGBCE are subject to approval

by Parliament and would come into effect at the next district council election in May 2019.

The recommendations cannot affect the external boundaries of the district or result in changes to postcodes.

The LGBCE is a national body - it undertakes periodic reviews of local government ward boundaries. The current review is based on population growth and significant variance in electoral equality across different parts of our district.

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS NEED Birthdays and anniversaries often mean different things to each of us.

When you are young, birthdays are a real landmark and who can’t remember the importance of those additional fractions when, asked how old you are, you’re not just 6, but 6ž?

Fast forward 60 years and ‘it’s only a number’ or we don’t bother at all.

So, what’s this all got to do with The Jubilee Players? Well, this year we have a significant anniversary. The ‘jubilee’ in our name gives a clue – we were formed in the same year that the Queen marked her Silver Jubilee, 1977, making us 40 years’ old this year.

It’s not unreasonable to assume that we’ve entertained upwards of 7,000 men, women and children in that time – whoever would have thought that many could fit into the Tithe Barn at Horstead?

Our membership over the last 40 years has ebbed and flowed as people have come and gone, but there’s always a core number to keep the group ticking over.

Regular audience members know though, that for the first time in our history, we were unable to put on a pantomime this year because our numbers were not as plentiful as we like, or

Our next play is in October, and is a farce called ‘Haywire’ by Eric Chappell. It’s got a

varied cast and we’d really love to open our auditions to some new faces – could that be you? We will have a read through of the play on Wednesday 5 July at 7.30pm, and auditions will be held at the Tithe Barn on Wednesday 19 July at 7.30pm. Equally, we’d like to recruit

new backstage crew members to work with our experienced members. Have you got what it takes to help backstage, or to shine the lights?

Previous experience is not essential, just plenty of enthusiasm and willingness to muck in.

Usually at this time of year, we’re busy rehearsing and it’s always difficult for anyone interested in joining us to pop in, as the actors are running through their lines and social chat is nigh on impossible. There is no summer production in June this year, but we’ll still be busy. During the forthcoming months, we are going to use our club nights to read plays and to socialise over a coffee.

If you’ve been thinking that you might like to have a go at amateur dramatics, either on stage or behind it, then come and join us on a Wednesday evening from 7.30 – we will be at the Tithe Barn for play readings on 10 and 24 May. Stunning Flowers: If we were to mention celebrating the 1930s then I am sure we would see a sea of Jazz Hands across the county. Summer concert premieres specially-written work

On Saturday 17 June at 7.30pm North Norfolk Chorale will present its summer concert at Salle Church.

The programme will include a new setting of ‘Proficiscere Anima Christiana’ by local composer Charles Damsan. Using words from Cardinal Newman’s famous poem ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ this new setting is for organ, oboe and chorus.

The piece has been specifically composed to take advantage of the superb acoustics of Salle Church, and will feature oboe soloist Willow Swiatek, with William Falconer playing the organ.

Under the leadership of the Chorale’s Musical Director Jonathan Dodd, the remainder of the programme will consist of carefully selected music designed to make the most of the acoustics in this building, which has frequently been used for professional recordings.

It will start with Henryk Górecki’s beautiful ‘Totus Tuus’. Originally composed to 10

Mundesley Mammoth Beach Clean

The recent storms and sea surges have left parts of Mundesley beach thick with debris laced with polystyrene, broken plastic, and general rubbish (shoes, lino, pens, buckets, balls, water bottles). Some items may have come from the destroyed Cromer beach huts.

Leaving hospital - a national obsession

We have all seen headlines such as ‘NHS in Crisis!’. There are not enough hospital beds to cope with demand, people are left on trolleys in corridors and ambulances queue round the block.

At the other end of the system, people ready to leave hospital, but not well enough to go home, have nowhere to go and so ‘bed-blocking’ results, with some desperate cases.

As a preventative measure, and well before any crisis occurs, I would encourage people to make a Lasting Power of Attorney Health and Personal Welfare (LPA). At least that way, trusted family members or friends have fully-recognised legal authority to speak on your behalf, in the event of mental incapacity.

But what about those who are vulnerable but have mental capacity or those who lack capacity but have no LPA?

Families need to know their rights. First, before discharge, a social-needs assessment should be done, particularly if the person is elderly or vulnerable, to establish their needs and how they can be met. Ideally, at least one family member (or trusted friend) should be present to assist at the assessment. A copy of the assessment should be supplied. Often hospital staff (even including doctors) are unaware that Local Authority Social Services should be involved in the discharge process. This is so even if the person is ‘self-funding’ (i.e. they have enough money to pay for their own care); in that case Social Services still have a duty to assist in putting a care plan in place.

If a care home is recommended, what type should this be: residential or nursing? What if there are mental health issues?

If a nursing home is considered best, a preliminary assessment for Continuing Health Care (CHC) should be carried out, with a family

member present. If a person is eligible for CHC, the NHS pays for all care and accommodation: sadly, this is rarely awarded.

Discharge should never take place without all the appropriate assessments and the correct procedures being adopted.

Representation by a specialist solicitor enables the person’s rights to be upheld.

If CHC is not awarded, then addressing how the cost of care is to be funded is the next step. If the person has been ‘sectioned’ under the Mental Health Act, this sounds worrying, but an advantage is that it ensures eligibility for NHS ‘aftercare funding’. Taking legal advice at this stage helps to ensure that the correct procedures are followed by the local and health authorities.

Sometimes there is a dispute about where a person should live on their discharge from hospital. This is so not just if a person does not have mental capacity, but also if the local or health authority will not fund the preferred care home, or will not fund a return home with in-home care. Can someone insist on returning home with in-home care, if it costs the local authority more than a care home? Does the question funding take precedence over the autonomy given to individuals under the Care Act?

Leaving hospital is rarely easy, especially for the elderly and vulnerable. Special care is needed to make sure they have both the right medical care and also the right legal advice and care.

Egg Hunt is child’s play!

On a glorious Easter Saturday morning, over 200 families enjoyed a fun packed morning at North Walsham Memorial Park, in aid of North Walsham Play. Children (and adults) of all ages enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt within the grounds of the Park, seeing the first large scale egg hunt come to the park for many decades.

Children needed to find the 18 clues left by the Easter Bunny and solve the three word-puzzles.

Once successfully completed participants were able to receive their Easter goodie bag full of chocolate treats.

As well as the hunt, Twist’n’Shape by the Sea were on hand to provide Balloon Models, whilst Emma Furness provided Easter-related face painting. Homemade cakes and refreshments were also on offer for all to enjoy along with an Easterthemed raffle.

This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the eighth Crab & Lobster Festival with a host of seafaring fun for all the family.

With numerous events, this year’s Festival offers plenty to do across the weekend.

The Festival will begin with an Opening Concert on Friday 19 May at Cromer Pavilion Theatre with a night of seaside fun, folk and comedy. Hosted by Olly Day and Nigel Boy Syer, the event will feature the Sheringham Shantymen and local dance group, Marlene’s School of Dance. It is set to be a night to really start the Festival in style.

The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 20 May and in both Cromer and Sheringham on Sunday 21 May.

The Festival will host an array of local food and drink stalls, superb seafood, scintillating entertainment, seafaring crafts, music, comedy, film, crab dressing competitions and the World’s Best Crab Sandwich competition.

In both towns local fishermen will be demonstrating the art of net braiding and pot making as well as the ever popular mobile aquarium from the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.

Committee member and local fisherman John Davies said “Fishing is an important part of the two towns’ heritage and visitors will be able to witness at first hand these traditional crafts and take a look at how the fishermen construct the traditional wooden crab pots as well as parlour pots.”

#2minutebeachclean at Mundesley

by Mundesley CoastWatch, the new #2minutebeachclean Station was unveiled by Norman Lamb MP to the approval of a small crowd of passionate supporters.

A 2 minute beach clean might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it is very important. Every piece of plastic that is removed from the marine environment is no longer a danger to the animals that still live there. Polystyrene debris is frequently to be found strewn across our beaches, breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces until it

resembles fish eggs. Land and marine animals mistake plastics for food and eat it. Earlier in the year scientists in Norway found more than 30 plastic bags and other plastic waste inside the stomach of a stranded whale.

Entanglement from discarded nets, fishing lines and balloon ribbons cause strangulation and injury to marine and bird species.

Michelle Duddy, who regularly organises beach cleans across Mundesley, Sea Palling, Bacton and Walcott is only too aware of the amount of beach pollution. “In 2016 from 31 beach cleans, approximately 976.1 kg of rubbish was collected! Mainly plastic bottles, polystyrene takeaway boxes and cups, polystyrene fish boxes, cotton bud tubes, baby wipes, rope and ghost gear (derelict fishing gear). Nurdles (small plastic pellets about the size of a lentil) and Styrofoam litter the tide lines too.

The problem is ongoing. We rely on the goodwill of the public to help beach clean whether it is individually as a #2minutebeachclean or as part of an organised beach clean.”

across the UK but only two in East Anglia – Mundesley being the second. The first was pioneered in North Norfolk by Louise O’Shea who runs the West Runton Beach Café. There, the benefits have been noticeable: “Firstly everyone, young, old, families and school groups all enjoyed their #2minutebeachclean and thought it was a brilliant idea. The best thing for us was the real difference it made to litter on the beach. West Runton is a safer bathing beach. Whilst collecting water samples for bathing quality testing, the Environment Agency also takes note of how busy the beach is and if there is any visible litter. On several occasions zero litter was recorded. This was an amazing result for us and proof that the #2minutebeachclean Stations work.”

Cromer’s first 60s festival totally groovy, man Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Culture said “There was a super turn out and a fantastic mood at the event. People were having a really good time - dancing kept breaking out near the bands and singers, some of this was as early as 10.30am!

More than 3,000 people throng to new event showcasing sights and sounds of the 1960s Cromer’s 60s Festival drew big crowds last month to North Norfolk’s iconic Cromer Pier.

“The success of Cromer’s 60s event really shows there’s an appetite for something new and fun along the North Norfolk Coast to add to the already superb calendar of events in our area. We are definitely going to look into whether this can become a yearly event.”

Park, Cromer, who championed the event, said “It was amazing to see so many people having a great time while celebrating the 60s. The 60s are very special to me so being able to share some of my favourite things with other people was really great. Thanks to everyone who came along.

The St George’s Day celebration organised by North Norfolk District Council welcomed in excess of 3,000 visitors over the course of the day. Many came on vintage scooters and motorcycles and even more got into the spirit of the 1960s by dressing in period clothing.

The event ran from 10am-4pm and was officially opened by TV and radio presenter Helen McDermott. With vintage stalls and vehicles, a screening of the 1966 World Cup Final, live music and dance, Beatles and Thunderbirds exhibitions, great food and Happy Hours in the Pier Bar with £1/pint, the day was packed with fun.

Yacht pond refilled in North Lodge Park

Investment by North Norfolk District Council in North Lodge Park, Cromer, has seen the yacht pond extensively refurbished and refilled in readiness for the main visitor season.

North Walsham Live Aid

When North Walsham Live Aid kicked off its 2017 event on Friday 21 April, it set the pattern for two nights of rock music and entertainment that will be remembered in the town for some time to come, including a visit from legendary Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett with his wife, Jo.

Steve is the patron of North Walsham Live Aid and it was brilliant to see him at the gig on the Saturday night.

Rock covers band Storm opened the show on Friday night with 90 minutes of solid rock, joined on stage by Billy Batchelor, maintaining his record of having performed at every one of the Live Aid events.

During the changeover, we were treated to some excellent acoustic numbers by Nigel Ashcroft.

When the curtain went back for the second half, it was hard to realise that it was not in fact Guns n Roses on stage, but the GNR Experience, the top GNR tribute band in the country just back from gigs in France.

All the favourites were delivered, giving us a brilliant visual performance as well as first class musicianship. During the evening, a secret auction provided additional interest as well as raising money for the event.

Saturday was opened with a superb acoustic set from Curtis Cronin (look out for this guy

in the future).

Uprising hit us as soon as the curtains opened with an impressive set of classic rock, much enjoyed by Steve Hackett.

A short changeover set by Curtis was followed

by The Black Dogs, a really professional bunch of guys delivering a selection of much loved rock, including the iconic ‘Freebird’.

The memorabilia auction took place, led by Master Auctioneer Charles HornerGlister, with 34 lots of highly collectable and desirable items, many signed by rock legends. The price of £2000 was paid for a strat style guitar with a Pink Floyd design signed by Roger Waters and Nick Mason. Next was a suede Vanwall jacket owned and donated by Sir Stirling Moss, making £510.

Only slightly delayed by the auction, and always worth waiting for, local favourites The Glamtastics carried us on a sea of lycra and great Glam Rock towards the final band of the evening.

Raising the roof as always, the brilliant Walkway kept the action going to the very end, rounding off another great evening of real live rock music.

Having sorted all the paperwork, I am delighted

to report that we will be presenting The Clare School in Norwich with a cheque for a massive £10,000.

This will enable the school to purchase outright the latest sensory interactive floor that they wanted for their new sensory room, and probably a few more things to improve the room.

I would like to thank all the bands, Paul (Tich) Hagen for the sound and lighting system, her indoors, Anne, Julie, Pam, Daisy and Kat, also Woods, David, Tony, Harry, Sean and Laurie.

As usual huge thanks to the Community Centre staff and all the local shops etc that helped out with prizes.

FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND FITNESS CLASS FOR NORFOLK

A sport and fitness centre in North Norfolk is launching a pioneering fitness class which will be the first of its kind in the area and, it is believed, the first in England.

The initiative is designed to enable people with Asperger’s syndrome, a type of autism, to take part in exercise activities. The campaigners leading the project say they also have older people in mind who are put off regular classes because they are too brash, busy or noisy.

Sheringham Splash Leisure & Fitness Centre is following North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC’s) Sports Clubs and Hubs initiative, which has been delivering a range of sporting and exercise activities to encourage older and younger people who find using ordinary sports facilities difficult.

The Splash class will be suitable for everyone, but it is being developed with the particular needs of people with Asperger’s syndrome in mind.

“It’ll be just like a regular, fun exercise class,” says Stuart Jardine, Contract Manager for Places for People Leisure which runs several fitness centres across Norfolk, including Sheringham, Fakenham Sports & Fitness Centre and Victory Swim & Fitness Centre in North Walsham. “But we’re making sure the sensory environment the classes are held in won’t distress people on the spectrum. People with Asperger’s and autism often can’t cope with loud music, or crowded spaces, and this stops them being able to take part in fitness

activities. We want to overcome that and hope people on the spectrum – and everyone else - will come and join us.”

Mr Jardine has been working with Sheringham autism campaigner Clare Smith, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome four years ago.

“My disability is ‘invisible’ and people have difficulty believing it’s a problem, because I seem so ordinary,” says Clare Smith, “but I’m 60, I’m healthy and I want very much to keep fit. I swim but that gets lonely, and I haven’t been able to find an upbeat fitness class I can cope with.”

Mr Jardine explained that Asperger’s is a type of high-functioning autism and like others on the autism spectrum, people with Asperger’s are often hyper-sensitive to sound, smell, sight and touch.

“People with Asperger’s are usually exceptionally bright and don’t often have major physical disabilities. But the difficulties caused by their autism mean, for example, they have problems making out speech when there’s background noise. So Clare sometimes can’t hear our instructors over the music we play to energise participants.”

“And I can’t cope with being so close to people in the popular classes,” Mrs Smith adds.

Mrs Smith raised the problems with Splash in Sheringham, her local sports centre. It’s run on behalf of the council by Places for People Leisure. Both organisations want all local people to be able to reach their sporting and

fitness potential, despite any disabilities they might have or if getting older discourages them. All the PPL sporting and fitness centres with pools run separate swimming pool sessions for people with physical and learning disabilities,” says Mrs Smith, “but Asperger’s doesn’t fit these ‘boxes’. I want to be able to take part in all the activities at Splash and with only few little tweaks that should be possible.”

Mr Jardine plans to make the gym autismfriendly when the new fitness class is running.

“They’re lowering the background music and reducing whatever other distractions they can,” says Mrs Smith. “It’s so easy to make it possible for Aspies to be included.”

“This is a fantastic idea,” says Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing. “The council has a responsibility to support people with disabilities and this is an excellent way of including a group of people who too often get overlooked.”

Aylsham Open Gardens

There is always a fascination in visiting gardens hidden behind houses both large and small.

Aylsham will be offering the opportunity to look behind huge old houses, cottages, and modern homes to discover a fascinating array of design, colour and plantings.

Cottage in Peterson’s Lane where there’s live music on the Sunday.

What about a cottage garden, crammed with flowers and fruit, in Hungate Street? Then there are intriguing interpretations in modern gardens, too. You will have visit to experience the amazing variety… and there’ll be places where you can stop and admire the scenery with a cake and a cuppa.

All the money raised goes to good causes.

Ticket sale money goes to Aylsham in Bloom,

On Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June you’ll be able to buy tickets from 11am – 4pm from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard. A day ticket will cost £5 or a two day ticket for £8. There will be more than 15 gardens to visit. Most of them are opening for the first time, but there will be a few favourites to revisit, too.

Whatever your preference, there will be something to interest you. Take a look at Bridge House in Millgate where Tom Bishop spent over 50 years creating sweeping vistas from meadowland. Or sit back and relax with a cuppa in an acre of wildlife at Gardener’s

vegetables, trees and developing wildlife habitat provision. Money raised in gardens from sales of refreshments, plants etc goes to the good cause nominated by the garden owner.

This year, among the featured charities will be the ACT Centre, the Aylsham Gym, the Norfolk Heart Trust, and Ovacome (providing support for those with ovarian).

Because these are private gardens they often have steps and narrow paths. They are not usually suitable for wheelchairs. Guide dogs are welcome but please do not bring other dogs.

You may have read recently about two horses which died from eating full poo bags, one of these horses left behind a young foal. This is far more common than you might think; horses, livestock and wildlife are all in danger from discarded poo bags.

Your dog’s poo is a good indicator of their general health and what their owner does with it is a good indicator of their level of responsibility.

Dog owners have been educated for some time now in the importance of clearing up after their pets but recently a new phenomenon has emerged – carefully collected bags of poo being left behind. Wherever you walk, be it on the beach or around the beautiful countryside we are blessed with in North Norfolk, you will no doubt see abandoned bags. Many owners will have done it, left the bag balanced on the groynes or hung from a tree with the intention of collecting on the return journey. But how many owners with these good intentions get distracted playing with their dog or chatting with fellow walkers and forget? I’m sure it’s happened to most of us at some time.

There are a few easy resolutions; you could invest in a Dicky Bag. A purpose designed container in which to place the full poo bags; this container clips onto your belt or bag to keep your hands free. Built in odour prevention means you can continue with your walk minus the whiff of your dog’s deposit. You could just carry the bag with you, proudly displaying the fact that you’re a responsible owner who not only bags it but also bins it. Or like me you can pop the full bags into your walking bag ready to pop into the nearest poo bin, sometimes only to wonder the next day ‘where is that smell coming from’!

At Animal Magic Dog Club we promote responsible dog ownership and stock biodegradable poo bags in the club shop. Our members and all dog owners are encouraged to bag it and bin it and keep our countryside safe and clean for the whole community to enjoy.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When we had our first Bingo Night last year, we received requests to “do it again please”. On 22 April it was, once again, “eyes down”, with barely a spare seat in the hall and additional tables added as more people arrived.

It proved a very successful evening with £506 raised for the cats in care, with thanks to Rachel (helped by her husband and friends), for organising and running the event. Our next event is the Spring Sale on 6 May and we hope you will be able to join us there.

It is now nearly 17 years since the branch was formed and, during this time, advances have been made in cat welfare. While the cats are in care, they are held in cat pens, which are not their natural environment. Years ago (not at our branch), cats were confined in small cages, which must have been very stressful for them. During the time the branch has been running, Cats Protection has reviewed the size required and recently advised that, when our standard pens are replaced, they will need to be larger than the ones in situ.

Over the years, we have also seen changes in the quality and variety of food on offer for our feline friends. Special diets for cats with health problems and different foods available, depending on the cats age and weight, all help to keep our cats happy

and healthy for much longer.

This is also reflected in the veterinary care now available.

In-house blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound and much more, are there to help the vets identify a problem and are now the norm.

Veterinary care for small animals has come a long way from the days of James Herriot, Pearl, a lovely friendly girl who would be happy to live with other cats and and within most surgeries you also dogs will find vets with special skills, be it surgery, dealing with feral cats, or identifying behavioural problems etc. However, not to be outdone by the care offered by a local vet, there are also specialist centres where your cats can be seen by a cardiologist or dermatologist, to name just two. Some of you may have seen some of the amazing skills available nowadays if you enjoy watching the work of the “supervet” on TV. Our animals are very lucky nowadays with so much knowledge and help available to ensure they are kept happy and healthy.

They do have one further advantage over us, as it is usually easier to get an appointment at the vets than one with your doctor!

This year's event is once again being held in The National Trust's Sheringham Park (NR26 8TL) on 25 June between 10am and 2pm.

Head of Rugby and former Premiership player James Brooks led the Camp, supported by Vikings players Ryan Oakes and Tim Weber. Brooks confirmed that more Camps were planned for future school holidays - these would be open to all and those not having played rugby before would be very welcome.

This Saturday both Vikings and Raiders are competing in their respective County Cup Finals at ‘Norfolk's Big Rugby Weekend’ at Holt, with the Under 14s and Under 15s playing in the Youth Finals Day on the Sunday.

Further ahead the annual Dardan Security Rugby Sevens and Beer Festival is at Scottow on 28 May, the first match kicking off at 11am.

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSC Teams to feature in three cup finals The second semi-final in the Knockout Doubles Cup saw NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott and the Richard’s Westgate and Porritt battle NWSCA’s Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Andy Beane and John Vaughan. The two Richards combined well in the opener with some terrific defence from Porritt as they beat Baldock-Yaxley and Vaughan in five, however NWSCA went on to win the tie 5-1 with the pairing of Elliott and Porritt going the distance in both of their two outings. NWSCA will meet Gresham’s School A in both Knockout Cup Finals.

The first semi-final of the Handicap Doubles Cup saw Aylsham Enterprise’s Andrew Gale (25), Daniel Atkins (26) and Ray Gale (26) host NWSCE’s Andrew Weston (37), Ben Lester (35) and James Lester (29). NWSCE won the first two battles 51-46 and 51-42 but the hosts levelled with a 51-49 win followed by another close 51-47 victory. Weston and Ben Lester then beat the Gales 51-49 before the Lesters moved the visitors one win from the final with a 51-45 win against Atkins and Andrew Gale. Weston and Ben Lester then had a chance to close out the win in the seventh battle but Atkins and Ray Gale won the golden point to keep Enterprise in contention and the drama increased as Atkins and Andrew Gale

Meanwhile NWSCB lost their Handicap Singles Cup quarter-final against Aylsham Enterprise 5-3 which became 5-4 after the dead rubber was played.

Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner finished their season in the Premier Division on Easter Monday as they hosted NWSCD’s Stuart Hook and the Phil’s Mole and Stone with Wilson winning the opener in five against Stone.

Mole then edged out De Neve 12-10 in the fifth with the Backhander forcing a decider from two down. Warner then beat Hook in four before De Neve won a battle of fast and furious rallies against Stone in five.

Finally in the Second Division NWSCF’s John Chapman, Frank Weston and Edna Stone concluded their season with a 10-0 win at home to LCC Seal’s Peter Ratcliffe and Rob and Robyn Templeman. Rob Templeman took Chapman to five and they both went the distance again in the doubles as Chapman and Weston beat the Templemans 11-4, 11-6, 9-11, 15-17, 11-6.
