SOS for a Watering Contractor for North Walsham in Bloom

We will be losing our long time watering contractor this year as Oz is moving away and therefore unable to continue with us. We wish Oz and his family all the very best in their new endeavour.

We therefore start the year with an urgent request for someone to do our summer watering. This is a paid position, and would suit someone who is happy to work for about two hours at a time twice a week, from the end of May until around the end of September. You would need to have a tow ball on your vehicle, being a job that would suit a professional gardener as an add on to their business, as it was with Oz. However, anyone who would like to take on the contract should apply. We supply all the equipment and water that is needed. Anyone interested in this position is asked to contact our Chairman, Chris Roberts on 01692 402174 for further details.

Our lovely little cyclamen which suffered so badly from vine weevil in October now seem to be holding their own. Since we applied a liberal dose of nematodes to all the tubs and towers we have had no further trouble, and, of course, the significant drop in temperature since Christmas has also helped the problem.

However, this procedure will have to be repeated in the spring and autumn from now on to keep the problem at bay. We recommenced our activities in the town earlier this month doing our usual maintenance work etc until we replant in June.

We had a lovely Christmas lunch at the Beechwood Hotel in December. Eighteen of us went along and, as usual, their food and attention to detail was well up to their high standard.

It just leaves us all at North Walsham in Bloom to wish you a Very New Puzzle Page & Competition Happy New Year and good gardening for 2017.

A dazzler of a display (that was worth the wait) Crowds of locals and visitors enjoyed a dazzling and spectacular start to welcome in the New Year in Cromer today – one week later than planned.

The annual New Year’s Day Fireworks display – the biggest in the country – was postponed a week due to adverse weather conditions on 1 January.

The breathtaking display saw over 2,400 fireworks launched off Cromer Pier and out to sea in a show that was well worth the wait and attracted people from far and wide to the town on a still winter’s day.

Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 14-minute extravaganza explode in the skies and on the surface of the sea.

Thousands of fireworks produced 27 sequences in the display – all preceded by a single green shell to mark the eve of the 100th anniversary of one of Cromer Lifeboat’s most famous rescues which took place on January, 9 1917 – that of the Fernebo.

On that day in 1917 a green rocket was fired to mark the end of what had been a tumultuous day.

Cromer Mayor Tim Adams said “We’ve had a fantastic evening, with a lot of visitors from as far afield as Cambridgeshire. People have come a long way to see the display, it’s a calendar event for some people and they come every year.”

Director of Titanium Fireworks, Simon Page, said “We are incredibly proud to have fired the display this year. It all went to plan and we’re very pleased to get the show we wanted to do on New Year’s Day up today. Cromer Pier is a unique setting, it is in good condition which means we can be quite creative and we’re already thinking about new ideas for 2018.

It’s all about trying to make the most of the architecture of the pier, it’s a great shape to work with. Some of the 150 displays we fire each year are work but others unbridle our creativity and we relish the challenges and opportunities of firing from an iconic structure like Cromer Pier."

Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said: "It was again, better than ever, it continues to wow year-on-year. The weather was perfect so we got patterns of smoke in the

air too. The display makes the most of this unique setting and has drawn lots of excited and complimentary comments. The hard work put in by the many volunteers, and the co-operation of many local services and businesses makes this a particularly satisfying event."

Local attractions and traders opened up their shops, eateries, museums and businesses on the day.

After the show, people took to social media to share their thoughts on the display with one visitor saying ‘Cromer's delayed New Year fireworks were worth the wait’, with another saying ‘Gorgeous firework bouquet tonight over Cromer pier, good things come to those who wait’, another said ‘Well worth a 300 mile round trip for'.

Crowds donated a total of just over £8,000 to the event’s bucket collection which will be split between funding next year’s display and a grant fund for local Cromer charities to apply to.

Mr Bond said “The committee are extremely pleased with the amount raised and would like to thank everyone for their support.”

For the fifth year running the organisers are running a Photography Compeition which is open to all non-professional photographers who attended the event. Did you take a photo of the fireworks on the day? If so, you have until midday on Monday, January 16 2017 to enter your images.

The winner will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2018 New Year’s Day Firework event as well as use in other promotional material. Local electrical retailer Hughes Plus are also offering the winner the latest 43” HD TV.

I would like to thank all the members and volunteers that help to make such an iconic and eagerly awaited Norfolk event a reality each year and attract so many visitors to sample the atmosphere Cromer has to offer.”

How are your New Year’s resolutions going?

I’m sure a number of you will have been participating in Dry January, and while I may not have committed to a resolution of my own, I take delight in being your botanical themed support. Be warned, my method of helping you remain on the sober straight-and-narrow is to put you off alcohol with stories of some fascinating and ghastly beverages.

Mudai is a Chilean alcoholic ceremonial drink created from the boiled seeds of Araucaria araucana, the monkey puzzle tree. The fermentation process is aided by chewing up and spitting back (er, no thanks) the seeds to add enzymes to break up starch. Mudai is not the only drink in which this method is employed, with the South/ Central American Chicha traditionally being created from the chewing of uncooked Zea mays (corn).

Jeppson’s Malört, known as “Chicago’s most beloved and disgusting liqueur” is so bitter that the manufacturer describes it as “unrelenting, even brutal to the palate” - there is even a rumour that it is flavoured with gasoline. The culprit is in fact Artemisia absinthium (wormwood) and the name absinthium is believed to come from the Greek word ‘absinthion’ meaning ‘undrinkable’. If that’s

not enough to deter you, the main active ingredient in wormwood (in tiny quantities, however, in derivative drinks) is the neurotoxin thujone, and side effects from consuming wormwood include renal failure, convulsions, involuntary evacuations, abnormal respiration, and foaming at the mouth.

Rosolio was a cordial created with our native Drosera rotundifolia (sundew) as described

by Sir Hugh Plat in 1600. Sundews are a carnivorous plant that trap and digest their prey with the use of glistening, mucilage topped tentacles, hence their common name, and Sir Hugh specified the removal of any dead insects before adding the ingredient to his cordial recipe. Sonnentau Likör, a German liqueur, still contains the sundew as an ingredient.

Secale cereale, or rye, a base ingredient in some whiskeys, beers and vodkas, is susceptible to ergot (Claviceps purpurea) fungus, which sometimes resembles the grain so closely it can be difficult to identify. Until the late

1800s the dark growths were believed to be a normal part of the plant. This fungus is, however, highly toxic to people and contains a precursor to LSD that survives the brewing process. Ergot is the cause of miscarriages, seizures, gangrene, psychosis and even death.

In the middle ages, entire villages could be subject to outbreaks of ‘dancing mania’, and it’s even been speculated that the Salem witch trials were based on convulsions caused by ergotism that led locals to believe the sufferer was bewitched.

Now go forth and be joyous in your decision to take a break from the grisly business that is alcohol consumption!

Method 1. Grease a baking tray approximately 28 x 18cm in size 2. Boil the dates in water for approximately five minutes until soft and then add the

Choral Society Fund Raising Event

Something rather different will be happening in St Peter’s Parish Church Sheringham on the evening of Saturday 18 February.

At 7.30pm – for just one night only – the church will be transformed into a cinema of the silent movie era - complete with organ accompaniment.

Anthony Gowing, a nationally renowned organist, has a particular passion for accompanying silent movies on the organ.

For this very special occasion, which is to raise much-needed funds for the Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (where Anthony is accompanist), he will accompany the full length feature film ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ which was made in 1925 and stars the then very popular Lon Chasey.

This is a great opportunity to do something a little different on a February evening at the end of half term and help a good cause in the process. An amazing year at Extra Care 2016 marked an amazing year in the life of Extra Care Home Services, a local business taken over by Sarah Thompson 10 years ago and formally known as Extra Hands Home Services. Initially run by Sue & Charlie Bensley to support people in their own home with domestic and gardening help. Sarah soon recognised the need to support people on a more personal basis and four years ago decided to expand the business to include providing full personal care support as well as practical support, enabling people to remain in their own homes for as long as they wish with the help of her dedicated team of highly skilled and compassionate care givers.

February 2016 saw the whole care team invited to the annual Norfolk Care Awards gala at Sprowston Manor Hotel where they were delighted to receive the “Highly Commended” award for promoting Dignity and Respect in everyday life, a fantastic achievement in being the only Home Care Agency shortlisted for this award.

March 2016 saw recognition from Norfolk County Council as the winner of their Home Support Feedback survey with Norfolk

Trusted Trader for gaining 100% response to their satisfaction surveys sent out to users of their care services.

The month of June welcomed Deputy Care Manager Alex to the team supporting Sarah with the regulated care side of the business, leaving Sue Williamson to manage the domestic and gardening support which has been the backbone of the company since it first started. Theatre’s plea for more behind the scenes helpers A community theatre is appealing for people to join its unsung “cast” of helpers who work away from spotlight to help it stage drama, cinema and music.

Sheringham Little Theatre has an army of about 80 folk who give their time for a variety of roles from usher duties and selling programmes to distributing posters and serving in the coffee bar.

Now it is looking to bolster the ranks, and is particularly keen to find those who can tackle:

• Fundraising – ideas and organisation

• Handyman and maintenance work to keep on top of minor repairs

• Backstage crew roles from props to scenery – and even stage management for local productions.

• Costumes – laundry, ironing and repairs

Mrs Thompson said the theatre was particularly keen to set up a fundraising team, who could come up with ideas for events, organize and run them and encourage the community to hold moneyspinning functions to support their local theatre.

There was a real sense of team spirit and family among the volunteer team and the theatre ran social events during the year, she added.

Volunteers also get invitations to private events at the theatre.

Panto gives big boost to Little Theatre

A Peter Pan panto hooked in the crowds at Sheringham Little Theatre.

More than 6000 people watched the 45 shows during the festive season.

The production played to an average of 83% capacity at the 180-seater venue, with many of the performances sold out, said theatre director Debbie Thompson who was thrilled with the success of the panto.

"Feedback from audiences showed people loved the special effects, humour and quirkiness of the show, and the children particularly loved the puppets," she added.

Tick and Tock clock in with young raffle winners

Two young panto fans are all smiles after winning a pair of puppet stars from Sheringham’s fun festive show.

Brother and sister Harrison and Eva Peck from Sheringham enjoyed visiting the show at the Little Theatre – really getting into the spirit by dressing up as characters Captain Hook and Wendy.

Now the icing on their cake has been to win crocodile puppets Tick and Tock - who terrorized Captain Hook in the successful show - in an end-of-season raffle, which also raised funds for the community theatre.

Parents Kate Stevens and Craig Peck took Harrison, five, and Eva, four, along to the venue to collect their new colourful chums. Katy Harrison and Eva Peck and their parents said “Harrison was so meet new ‘family members’ Tick and Tock excited when he heard after winning them in a raffle that we had won the Photo: Sheringham Little Theatre raffle and has already arranged to take the puppets into Sheringham Primary School to show all his friends!”

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “I couldn’t be more delighted that Tick and Tock have found such a perfect home with a young family of Peter Pan fans.”

The £500 raised from the raffle will go toward the theatre’s ‘Little Bit Bigger’ campaign to build an extension on a flat roof to make a flexible space for young people using the venue.

"It was an ambitious production for us. We had shied away from Pan in the past because of the flying, but we can do it now because of the strength of the technical team headed by Matt Coomber," added Mrs Thompson.

"As a community theatre we rely very heavily on the panto and summer drama seasons which are our two main box office income generators.

So a successful panto season is important to us, and we are very pleased with Peter Pan's figures this year which exceeded our budget targets."

Next Christmas the Little Theatre's panto will be the Wizard of Oz, and will see a return of "dame" James Lavender.

The panto included specially made puppets Cast of Sheringham Little Theatre's successful of Tick and Tock, the Peter Pan panto crocodiles feared by villainous Captain Hook and which are being raffled off at the end of the season, as well as projections and simulated flying scenes.

It was also helped by having the show specially written for the small stage venue by director Nick Earnshaw.

Make a New Year’s resolution to help others in your community

Could you make a New Year’s resolution to help people in your local community?

That’s the question being asked by Norfolk Community Transport Association (NCTA).

There are nearly 50 community transport schemes operating across the county but, as NCTA chair Kate Gill explains “our schemes rely heavily on the important contribution made by volunteers giving of their time and energy – as drivers, administrators, trustees and passenger assistants - but we are especially short of drivers. We’re in urgent of people who are willing to give a few hours of their time to drive local residents on straightforward but essential journeys.

In a mainly rural county like Norfolk, community transport is many people’s only means of getting to and from healthcare

appointments or just to the local shops. Around 250,000 journeys a year are provided across the county, helping local residents live independently and access social activities, education and employment. It plays an important part in tackling social isolation and is especially important for older people and those with disability issues, but can also be a lifeline for younger people and families who lack their own transport.

“We’re very lucky in Norfolk” added Kate.

“Many communities have a volunteer car scheme, a local community-run bus service or dial-a-ride scheme offering responsive and accessible travel option – but we do need drivers and would urge anyone who feels they might be able to contribute to the wellbeing of others in their community to get in touch to see how they might be able to help.”

Commercial operators often find rural routes uneconomic and in some areas of the county there are just no transport choices available.

Some community transport schemes serve just one village, others provide extended Dial-ARide bus services across wider areas and still others arrange social trips and days out.

Hayley Moyses’ Britgrass Three will bring their unique blend of Americana and sometimes fun take on well-known pop tunes blended with Country and more to Northrepps Village Hall to help the Bluebird Deaf Water Ski and Wakeboard Club, a not for profit organisation that was formed in 1965. The club that operates from Costessey Pits, Taverham, encourages people from all walks of life to enjoy water skiing and wakeboarding, particularly including members of the deaf community. Amongst other projects the club also holds regular activity days throughout the season for local schools, as well as for guides and scouts and participates in the Sportivate programme in conjunction with Active Norfolk.

One such member of this unique club is Scott Butler, familiar to some for being the local promoter responsible for Cromer’s annual ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival, and other concerts and events. Scott now in his early sixties took up the exciting sport of water skiing for his first time with the club two years ago, and has been so impressed by the effect this has had personally on his own health and general wellbeing that he has decided to enlist an act he has worked with on numerous occasions, to help club funds by way of organising the concert.

Local Lady Loses Battle

Regular readers may remember our story in NW Times issue 503 dated 24 September 2016 where we reported that terminally ill Alicia Elliott had realised her ambition to ensure visitors have access to the Chieftain and Centurion Main Battle Tanks at the Norfolk Tank Museum by her donation of ‘Alicia’s Steps’.

We were very sad to learn of Alicia’s passing earlier this month.

Her daughter Caron Jenner writes ‘she fought to the end but passed on 3 January 2017 and her funeral was 25 January.

According to Mum’s instructions, her family and friends did not wear black and will try not to cry more than seven days. Her military tank steps legacy was her own stairway to heaven. Fly and be with your furry and non furry family RIP sweet Mummy’.

We send our condolences to Alicia’s family and friends.

First Aid Success at Paston

As part of their Paston Sixth Form College Employability Skills Award, students completed a St John Ambulance course in Essential First Aid. The students now know how to deal with emergencies safely, from accidents involving broken bones and burns, to heart attacks, choking and unconsciousness. Students demonstrated their skills in recognising a range of conditions and treating the casualties, including bandaging, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage.

This is the first group of students in 2017 who have passed the award. Over the next few months many more students will be completing the course.

Some of the students are seen here with their certificates after a presentation by Kevin Grieve, Principal and Sandra Emerson, Director of Curriculum. Students commented that they really enjoyed the three hour session saying ‘I loved being covered in bandages’ and ‘it was really friendly even though you didn’t know everybody at the start’.

Several students commented that they felt more prepared for going to university and employment and living independently - ‘you never know when you’re going to need it’.

Bradfield CC are looking to boost their youth teams from across the region for the summer season, so if you’re a cricketer and looking to play for a successful and growing club to play for – look no further!

We have nets starting in January, with outdoor training starting in Easter.

Bradfield CC are running free sessions for beginners and open for any child and any ability at the North Walsham Sports Centre – Just come along and try it - Sessions are played indoors with softball for beginners.

The public drop-in session helped to explain what options have been shortlisted for further consideration for the scheme and what the next steps will be.

The event explained the need for the scheme, what is and isn’t possible; helped raise awareness of how coastal management schemes are funded and what the next steps are, and enabled people to give feedback on the shortlisted options.

Hundreds of people attended the Mundesley Coast Management Scheme drop in session yesterday Tuesday 17 January.

The public drop in session and exhibition was held at Coronation Hall in Mundesley on Tuesday 17 January from 2pm to 7.30pm.

An outline business case for Mundesley Coast Management Scheme is being developed to help attract funding and gain approval for the work.

It is expected that the final scheme will cost between £1 million and £1.5 million pounds.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie has been very busy on the ‘cat phone’ since the New Year and several more cats have been re-homed, including Pudding the lovely tabby and white girl featured last time.

Although quite a few of the calls have been for people offering homes to cats in our care, she receives lots of calls on other matters. Obviously people do contact us if, for whatever reason, they, or members of their family, can no longer care for their cat(s) and, after discussing the circumstances, these do go on our Waiting List. Other calls can be for people with cat behaviour/health related queries and, although she is sometimes able to help, obviously it is not always possible as the best person to talk to would be a vet and, in these circumstances, Stephanie will suggest you contact them.

Most of the other calls will relate to stray cats and, as we have previously explained, it is important to establish whether or not the cat is indeed a stray. This is not only for our benefit, but also for the benefit of the person who wishes us to take the cat into care. Stephanie therefore always suggests taking the cat to a vet to see whether or not it has been chipped and would also advise putting paper collars on to see if there is an owner out there. It is important for people to realise that a cat is regarded as a person’s property. This is one of the reasons why, when a stray is handed into our care, the person handing it in signs one of our Acceptance Forms. The form clearly indicates that we have taken the cat in good faith as a stray. If, at a future date, there is a dispute with regard to the ownership of the cat, we can refer the matter back to the person

Canine Parvovirus

As many of you may already be aware, there has recently been an outbreak of Canine Parvovirus in Norwich. In fact, it was probably the most significant that I can remember during my time working in Norfolk. Parvovirus first reared its head in the UK as an epidemic in the 1970s and resulted in the death of thousands of dogs during a short period of time.

concerned. As the cat is the property of the original owner, the person handing it in could be charged under the Theft Act 1968 with handling stolen goods or obtaining property by deception.

Instances of this happening are very rare but it is important to be aware of this. Because cats are known to visit other homes for food is would be very easy to consider that a visitor is a stray, when in fact it is just being a cat.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham. immunosuppression, vomiting and diarrhoea. However, where there is a high enough viral burden or immunosuppressed animals it can cause disease in adult dogs, and this was the case in the recent outbreak.

So what can we do?

The simple answer is to ensure we vaccinate our dogs sufficiently. It is thanks to vaccination that we have almost eradicated many diseases such as Canine Distemper, but failure to continue to maintain vaccination status will inevitably lead to recurrence of some diseases.

Parvovirus is a good example of one such disease because it can survive in the environment for years at a time. There has been a public recent trend towards avoiding vaccinations as some deem them as unnecessary. Although there is some truth behind the concept that some dogs maintain life-long immunity following their first 2 years annual vaccinations it is not the case for all dogs, which means missing vaccinations can leave some pets unprotected.

There are also some diseases which all dogs require regular vaccinations for, even if they are still immune to others. This is the reason behind annual boosters and why we always recommend that dogs are either blood tested to check their immune status or maintained with annual vaccinations.

With this in mind, Westover Vets are offering a vaccination amnesty during the months of January and February where vaccination courses that have lapsed can be restarted for the price of an annual booster.

Directionless, defeated, down

After nine defeats in thirteen league games Alex Neil is still in charge of Norwich City; a 2-1 defeat to bottom table Rotherham surely was going to be the cherry on the icing of the cake for the board to sack Neil however that is not the case.

Saturday’s defeat against Rotherham pushes City further and further away from the playoff spots, as automatic promotion is now something of a pipe dream.

Personally, I feel Neil should’ve been sacked

around late November, when things weren’t to late and we could’ve turned our season around.

No longer in the dugout do I see the driven, no nonsense, ruthless character that was the Alex Neil of twenty months ago but instead a lost, clueless and tactically inept manager who has lost all of the fire that persuaded the club to bring him in two years ago.

Our downfall cannot be totally blamed on Neil however as Delia and the rest of the board seem to have no sense of direction as to where they want to be and what they want to achieve

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCA Book Final Semi-final Spot

The last quarter-final in the Knockout Singles Cup saw Mundesley A’s Peter Betts and the Paul’s Price and Light host NWSCA’s Howard Lupton, John Vaughan and Andy Beane with Lupton using all of his experience to regain control and win the opener from two down against Betts. Price levelled the tie from a set down against Vaughan before Beane hit some fine shots to beat Light in three. The next two battles were also won by NWSCA in straights sets as Lupton’s control was decisive against Price and Beane beat Betts 12-10, 11-9, 11-6.

Vaughan decided the tie as his win in four against Light sealed a 5-1 win for the visitors.

In the semi-finals, NWSCA will visit Sharks while the top half of the draw sees Gresham’s School A host Backhanders. In the semi-finals of the Knockout Doubles, it is Poacher’s turn to visit Gresham’s A while NWSCA and NWSCB meet in a derby.

In the Premier Division, NWSCD’s Andrew Tuddenham and the Phil’s Stone and Mole battled NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Werner Zivna and Richard Westgate with Stone winning the opener in four against Elliott before losing a

two set lead against maximum man Westgate who also edged Mole 12-10, 13-15, 11-6, 11-9.

Mole and Tuddenham picked up a set from Zivna and Elliott respectively. Stone won the final singles in straight against Zivna and combined with Tuddenham for a four set doubles win against Westgate and Zivna, however NWSCB won the match 7-3. The same NWSCB team hosted Poacher’s David Foster, Andy Marsh and Chris Fuller with the visitors winning 9-1. Westgate took the only point for the hosts with a win in straight against Marsh with the Poacher beating Elliott in five. There was drama in the opener as Ben Lester made a brilliant recovery from 2-9 down in the fifth against Gould to hold a match-point but the Lobster hung on to win 13-11. There was consolation for Ben as he beat Thompson in five who in turn edged out Weston 15-13 in the fourth. James Lester beat Thompson in four but Gould and Dawson took full houses as Lobsters won 8-2 which was the same score NWSCE were also beaten by when visiting Gresham’s School B.

There was a draw in the Second Division as LCC Dolphin’s Mick and Keegan Hammond and debutant Chris Francis hosted NWSCF’s Frank Weston, John Chapman and Edna Stone.

Weston took a maximum beating both Hammonds in four while Keegan crucially attacked well to beat Stone from two down.

NWSCF were also beaten 10-0 by Aylsham Albion.

Coming to Felmingham Sport Clubs and Hubs at Felmingham Village Hall in February and March, just £10 for ten sessions.

We are encouraging the local community and surrounding communities to come along to Felmingham Village Hall on Mondays when there will be new sporting activities and a Tea Dance.

Our project is funded by Sport England and run by North Norfolk District Council. Our aim is to provide affordable sporting activities for local communities and to make the activities sustainable for the future.

In 2016, North Walsham Round Table are pleased to have made donations to local good causes including Mobility Aids Centre for Harry Addy (£563), Mundesley 1st Air Scouts (£250), Friends of North Walsham Junior School (£400), North Walsham Gym Club (£500), MSTCN Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre Norfolk via Barry Foulser (£300), Les Platford – Kilamanjaro Charity Climb (£300), North Walsham Guides (£300), Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal (£100), North Walsham Scout Group (£3500) and Priscilla Bacon Lodge Centre – via Andrew Kerry (£500).

Donations were also agreed in 2016 but paid in 2017 to North Walsham Play – creating play areas for children in the area (£500), Michael Holyland - Child’s Mobility Scooter (£775), Mundesley Junior School (£600)

So if you are thinking about getting a bit more active in 2017 please come along and have a try.

• 6 February at the Village Hall Tea Dance 1.30pm - 2.30pm (A small charge will be made for tea/coffee and cake)

• 6 March at the Village Hall Sporting Activities for all between 10am – 12noon - come and try Table Tennis, Boccia, New Age Kurling and Carpet Bowls. Both classes will be running weekly.
