North Walsham Air Cadets Competition Success

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Cadets from 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron had a successful weekend last month in the Air Training Corps Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Field Competition.

Teams from the 29 Squadrons in Norfolk and Suffolk met in Thetford to compete in several events including first aid, archery, clay pigeon shooting, orienteering, and aircraft recognition.

The North Walsham team, led by Cadet Warrant Officer Daniel Middleton came first in orienteering, third in the Mini Bus Pull and were beaten into second place by just half a point in the Leadership Exercise. Overall the Squadron came 7th out of 29.

North Walsham Air Cadets Competition Success Squadron Commander Flying Officer Alan Stevens said this was a fantastic achievement for a small Squadron.

In fact, we needed to borrow a cadet, Cdt Ashlee Barrell, from our friends at Broadland Squadron to fulfil the requirement for two cadets under 15. We will be looking to recruit new boys and girls to the Squadron and then can expect to do even better next year.

North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 18 years. They are currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers.

Council rewards Christmas ‘Dinner Lady’

At its meeting on Tuesday 25 April, North Walsham’s Town Mayor, Brenda West surprised Pauline Vincent when she invited her and all Councillors to step out into the evening sunshine, where she was presented with the Town Council’s Community Award for 2016.

Mrs Vincent, who had been brought to the meeting under false pretences through the collusion of the Council and her husband Roger, was presented with the award for her voluntary work over 20 years, helping to prepare the annual Christmas Day dinners held at the North Walsham Community Centre for those in the town living on their own, and from which she is now stepping down.

New Town Councillor

Our photo shows our Town Council’s newest, and youngest, Councillor, Robert Murphy, being welcomed by Town Mayor Brenda West and Deputy Mayor Barry Hester.

Robert will be representing the East Ward, and has already started by approaching local schools in line with his ambitions to get young people interested in local government and voting.

Co-option of new councillor will bring young people’s views to the table

At its meeting on Tuesday 25 April, North Walsham Town Council co-opted Robert Murphy as a Member for the East Ward, filling one of the two remaining vacancies (the other is in the West Ward).

Mr Murphy, 18, impressed Councillors with his desire to work with young people in the town and to bring their views and ideas to the Council table. He hopes to generate interest in what the Council does and how they can put their views to local representatives, and also more generally in local government and the election process.

Method 1. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt & 01263 824555 butter together to a crumb consistency 2. Add the milk & wholegrain mustard to the flour mix, kneed until fully 01263 838383 incorporated to form dough 3. Fold the grated cheese in to the mixture 4. Place the dough on to a floured bench 01263 579579 & roll out to an inch & a half thick 5. Use a ring cutter to cut the dough into circles 6. Place on a flat tray lined with baking paper 7. Egg wash the scones & sprinkles cracked black pepper on the top 8. Bake in the oven at 170c for 15-18 minutes 9. Once cooked place scones onto a cooling rack to allow to cool

New ‘Bathing Water’ designation for West Runton

Defra decision follows NNDC request and formal consultations

West Runton beach has been officially designated as a ‘bathing water’, a key step on the way to winning sought-after Blue Flag status.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) recently announced that West Runton has successfully passed the tests to achieve the designation.

Beaches, and inland lakes that attract a large number of bathers, can be designated as bathing waters under the Bathing Water Directive. Water quality at bathing waters is tested during the bathing season, which in England runs from 15 May to 30 September.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “The district is very proud of its four Blue Flag beaches at Cromer, Sheringham, Sea Palling and Mundesley.

“The Blue Flag status helps both visitors and locals understand how clean a beach and its waters are, as well as the high quality of facilities provided. It is something that is recognised worldwide.

“Bathing water designation is one of the crucial steps on the way to winning Seaside Award status, and then Blue Flag status.”

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, ward member for the Runtons, said “This is fantastic news for local people, local business and visitors. The quality of the beach warrants the designation, both in terms of its beautiful visual appeal and in terms of its history. We have coachloads of young people coming here on regular occasions to learn about the West Runton Mammoth, the chalk reef and the Cromer Forest Bed.”

The application for the designation was formally made by North Norfolk District Council following a local consultation. Defra ran its own consultation which was completed in March.

West Runton has RNLI Lifeguards operating from July to September, public toilets at the bottom of the gangway, car parking, bus and rail services, a café by the gangway and other food outlets and shops in the village. It also has a voluntary beach warden and a dog free area between May 1 and 30 September.

North Norfolk District Council hosts new exhibition inspired by Norfolk’s farming heritage

NNDC’s public art gallery is presenting a visually bold new exhibition ‘Back to the Barn’ by local artist Catherine Hall.

The exhibition, running from 3 May to 12 July, reflects Catherine’s upbringing on her family’s Norfolk livestock farm surrounded by animals, woodland and fields. Her accessible and warm representation of farm animals against bright block-colour backgrounds brings modernity to a traditional subject.

Aylmerton resident Catherine said “‘Back to the Barn’ is extremely meaningful to me in so many ways looking back on where I've come from and taking in all the beauty we've taken for granted around us and bringing it out on canvas.

I love watching the characters emerge and recreating their personalities.”

NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the 1st Floor Gallery in the Council’s Holt Road offices in Cromer. Currently six exhibitions are held annually.

Calling any Brass players in the North Walsham Area!

North Walsham Salvation Army are looking to help develop and facilitate a community band to work with themselves for special community events and its monthly 'Songs of Praise' meetings.

Bandmaster Martin Siggins has emphasised that folks of various standards would be welcome to join them, and if they need an instrument this can be provided.

A special 'open' band practice is to be held on Thursday, 23 June at 8pm at their hall in Hall Lane, North Walsham. Those coming will be able to have a go at a variety of styles of brass gospel music, and join in with the army's own band a bit like Paul O'Grady did recently in some ways.

On Sunday 22 May and Sunday 26 June at 6pm the army is holding 'Summer Praise' in which the band and songsters will be taking part, and it is hoped that some will join them to augment their own band in what will be the beginnings of the new Salvation Army community band.

Major Richard Durrant, commanding officer of the North Walsham corps stresses all are welcome, and says 'a little bit like Paul O'Grady did recently, we invite you to join with us on these special occasions. If you are not sure what to expect come along on Sunday 22nd May and find out what you think for yourself'.

He adds 'All are very welcome, and this is something we plan to do at least once a month, so even if you can't make this date, get in touch to find out details for future plans. Hopefully, in time this community band can really develop into something that can play a real role in special events in and around our town' .

So brass players blow out the cobwebs and get down to the Salvation Army!

At our last Club meeting we enjoyed something of a change when Dulcie Lofting visited us from West Norfolk and demonstrated a different title to that we had been expecting - nevertheless, her title ‘Simplicity’ was beautifully interpreted with six modern designs which even the most experienced members found inspiring.

We don't have a club meeting in May as we are taking a coach trip to the ‘Rejoice’ Flower Festival at Wymondham Abbey leaving the Library car park on New Road at 9.30am and leaving Wymondham at 4pm.

The festival is open from 27 - 30 May but if you wish to join our trip on Friday 27 May, then contact Sue Bloomfield on 01692 500440.

The following month's meeting will be on 30 June and we will be welcoming Jan Ireson who will be demonstrating The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging.

About With Friends member Peter White doesn’t let his disability stop him from reaching for the sky and so on 29 June he will be walking in the air to raise money for the Cromer based charity.

Peter is going to do a Wingwalk in the skies over Gloucestershire when he will be strapped standing to the top wing of a biplane flown by an experienced member of The Flying Circus Aerosuperbatics team.

Peter, who works in the About With Friends’ Community Shop in Garden Street, Cromer every Tuesday and Thursday had already done parachute jumps to raise money for other charities and he decided he would like to help raise money towards a new minibus for the organisation which is well known in Norfolk.

As well as laying on a busy programme of social activities for children and adults, the charity also has a popular Workskills programme where more than 50 adults with a learning disability come to work on 1 or more days each week. This might be in the Community Café in Tucker Street, in the Catering or Gardening teams or in the Community team that provides lunch clubs for the over 55s and visits residents in Halsey House. Some members also make craft items and woodwork products, which are sold in the Community shop where Peter works.

The charity’s big red minibus has been a regular sight across Norfolk (and as far afield as Belgium) for the past 8 years and is desperately in need of replacement. Peter’s brave Wingwalk will help raise a lot of money towards the new bus.

Phil Brooke – Back at the Hub

Phil Brooke is a Norwich based musician with a place in the higher echelons of British jazz guitarists. He is popular with audiences and respected by other musicians. He is a firm favourite at Sheringham Little Theatre’s Hub and will be back there on Sunday 29 May from 7.30pm. Phil will be playing and talking about the music of great jazz guitarists such as Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Jimmy Raney and Oscar Moore. Accompanying Phil will be Simon Brown (piano) and Ivars Galenieks (bass).

Choir leader says “farewell” with Brahms’ Requiem

On Saturday 4 June at 7.30pm North Norfolk Chorale will present a summer concert at Salle Church.

The main work will be Brahm’s German Requiem, sung in English and using music sets supplied by the Norfolk Library Service. This concert will be the Choir’s last performance under its long-serving Musical Director, Rosemary Kimmins, who steps down after leading the Chorale for 14 years. The Chorale will announce its new Musical Director in due course.

Reflecting on her time with North Norfolk Chorale, Mrs Kimmins said “it has been a pleasure to work with one of North Norfolk’s longestestablished choirs, and to help nurture the members’ musical talents.

Over the years, we have broadened our repertoire to include not just the traditional great choral works but also some lighter-hearted items such as show tunes and revue pieces. Our performances have been wonderfully enhanced by the talented guest soloists who have worked with us”.

We can also tell you that the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band will be playing its usual Sunday session at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, on Sunday 5 June from 1.30pm. Jamboree Style St George's Celebrations This year the first Salhouse Scout Group were the hosts of the District St George’s Day Celebration.

Lorraine Henriksen reports ‘Despite a dull start to the day weather-wise, the sun shone for our parade of 550 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers and their Leaders from across the North East Norfolk Scouts District (Scouts from Blakeney, Holt, Sheringham, Cromer, Aylsham, North Walsham, Mundesley, Stalham, Hoveton & Wroxham, Hainford & Frettenham and, of course, Salhouse who hosted this year’s St George’s Day Celebration) as they marched from the playing field in Thieves Lane, Salhouse to the Gorse Meadow field at Salhouse Broad (1.2 miles in all) - the exact location of the 1930 Jamboree which was attended by our Founder, Lord Baden Powell (B-P) and Prince George.

We were thrilled therefore that B-P’s grandson, Robin Baden Clay and his wife, Sue, were able to join us this year (all the way from their home in Dorset) for the whole day. Mr Clay was clearly moved to be able to join in our celebrations and was able to read extracts from his grandfather’s diaries. Mr Clay said “I do feel it is very important that, by attending such rallies, the young people see that they are a part of something SO much bigger than just their own pack or troop, and that they are part of “The Greatest Movement for Peace that the World has ever known.”

The impressive parade was led by ‘St George on Horseback’ and accompanied by the Band of the T.S. Norfolk Sea Cadets from Gorleston, under the careful watch of their Officer in Charge, AS/Lt (SCC) S. Carver RNR and consisted of 550 young people, 135 leaders with 250 parents and family members following. Forty six flags from each section of every group across the district were paraded, led by the Queen’s Colour, the St George Flag and the North East Norfolk District Scout Colour and formed a Guard of Honour as they entered the field through an impressive castellated gateway, which had been built especially for the event by 1st Salhouse members. Mr Baden Clay reviewed the parade and took the salute with District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen and the new High Sheriff of Norfolk, Major General Sir William Cubitt, KCVO, CBE.

The main celebration was led by Reverend Canon Andrew Beane - Vicar of Aylsham and District Chaplain, with every section’s flag impressively flying in the breeze at the front of the arena. The main gathering included each group taking forward, one by one, a neckerchief, linking it together with the previous ‘necker’ with a ‘Friendship Knot’, lots of campfire-style songs including ‘Ging 14

Gang Goolie’ and ‘Give Me Joy in My Heart (Shout for Scouting)’ – led by friends of Salhouse Group, Andy Betts and Andrew Hudson) - and a ‘Mexican Wave’ stunt. All 550 scouts, leaders and helpers also made their Renewal of Promises.

County Commissioner, Nickie Chapman, attended especially to present a coveted ‘Silver Acorn’ Award to the Group Leader of Hoveton & Wroxham – Terry Hughes. Terry was also thrilled to have been invited and was very much looking forward to attending the National Awards Ceremony at Windsor Castle on the following Sunday.

District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen, also introduced special guest, Mrs. Hilary Richards, the Chief Executive of the children’s charity, Break who explained that the scout members present (aged from 6 years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers) had participated in some part of the Go, Go, Dragons! initiatives last summer, with several sections taking the Dragon Trail either with leaders or with parents - many Dragons were painted, modelled and moulded over the months, as well as dragon quizzes and challenges devised, medieval costumes made etc.

Hilary presented Go, Go, Dragons! gifts as prizes to the youngsters who put the most effort into collecting their pennies in the Break Go, Go, Dragons! collecting boxes last summer – the young people who received Go, Go, Dragons! mugs as prizes were three scouts from 1st Buxton Lamas (Sea Scouts) Patrick Johns, Lily-Mai Spinks and Finn Overton and, from 1st Stalham Cubs, Alfie Smith, Casey Talbot and Connie Battley. (Alfie and Casey are still in the pack as Cubs but Connie has moved up to Scouts now.)

We are not sure how much each child collected but do know that Casey filled her box to the top with small change and topped it up with her own pocket money to make sure it was “really full”. Consequently, Hilary presented Casey with a Mini Dragon (Patch) as a special congratulations for her efforts.

We were also really pleased that we were able to have our own Scouting Dragon ‘Bajestic’ on site for the celebrations. She ‘flew’ in from her new home at the Eaton Vale Activity Centre to

spend the day with us, and by kind permission of Mr Daniel Dawson-Gordon of the Norfolk Antique & Reclamation Centre, one of the Duelling Dragons sculptures also watched over us.

In this Centenary year of Cub Scouting, we have many other celebrations planned including a District Camp at Holt Hall over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, but we particularly wanted to make this St George’s Day an extra special Jamboree-style Celebration for our scouting youngsters and their families to enjoy. In keeping with the medieval theme, our central celebration included the story of St George and the Dragon, vividly recounted to the gathering by storyteller-Dave Tonge. This led the youngsters nicely into the activities that followed, including the chance to try medieval activities found in a medieval village provided by family members of the Norfolk and Norwich Medieval Association, 14th Century re-enactment group.

They were able to enjoy ‘come and try’ archery, hobby horse jousting, fighting knights with favours, dressing-up as knights, sling shot demos, and medieval games, and also allowed to strike their own commemorative coins. There were also some beautiful birds of prey which the youngsters were able to hold, sword-making for the young Beavers, a ‘living village’ with ‘medieval’ cooking, crafting skills, board games, historical dancing demonstrations with audience participation, a storyteller, static birds of and so on with the afternoon rounded-off by an amazing hog roast for everyone - and lots of sunshine!’

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER RHODODENDRONS AND AZALEAS

In North Norfolk we are fortunate to have some of the finest displays of rhododendrons and azaleas in the country.

During May and early June it is worth visiting local gardens and estates such as Sheringham Park and Stody Lodge to see these most beautiful of shrubs.

Stody Lodge, near Edgefield, has what is believed to be the largest single planting of vividly-coloured azalea mollis in England. As many of the large varieties take from 10 to 40 years to reach maturity, we must be grateful to the people who caught the ‘rhododendron bug’ many years ago and planted for our enjoyment today.

You can look to the rhododendron genus (which includes all the azaleas) for special interest in tree form, bark colour and texture, leaf colour, flowers in all shapes and colours and last, and not least scent.

None of us can compete with these grand estates and provide such magnificent woodland settings but it is possible to grow rhododendrons at

home. The ideal conditions are an acid soil which is preferably light and if peaty so much the better. Full use should be made of fallen deciduous leaves to improve the soil by massing them round the rhododendrons as a thick mulch. This has the effect of keeping the plant’s roots shallow roots cool and moist right through the summer. If your soil is too chalky, it is possible to grow compact varieties in containers.

The Royal Horticultural Society offers the following advice to amateur gardeners for successful cultivation of rhododendrons and azaleas

• choose a site with dappled shade in sheltered conditions. Avoid deep shade beneath other trees and shelter from cold, dry winds. Dwarf alpine species will tolerate full sun providing the soil does not dry out. Avoid frost pockets and sites exposed to the morning sun.

• before planting, dig in plenty of neutral or acidic organic matter: composted tree bark, leaf mould, decomposing pine or spruce needles, or composted chopped bracken. Do not plant too deeply – all rhododendrons are surface-rooting and the roots should be just covered.

• rhododendrons are more difficult to grow in areas of low rainfall. Tap water often contains too much calcium and it is preferable to use rain water. In spring apply an ericaceous fertiliser.

• if planting in containers use John Innes or a similar ericaceous loam based compost. The RHS recommends re-potting every other year into fresh compost.

• rhododendrons do not require much pruning other than the removal of dead wood and deadheading of sent flowers if practical.

• problems can include leaf drop in cold weather, vine weevil in container grown plants and nutrient deficiencies which cause the leaves to yellow.

It is not really possible to recommend varieties that will suit all conditions but there are many available in local nurseries and garden centres.

Finally a warning, rhododendrons and azaleas can be toxic and although serious poisoning is unlikely when only small amounts of the plants are swallowed, parents and animal owners should be careful. One of the earliest accounts of mass poisoning dates back to the first century when Roman troops were allegedly poisoned by their Turkish enemies with honey made from the nectar of Rhododendron luteum!

Q1 Would I be able to obtain a loan against my house to invest in a Business?

It is possible to borrow money against your house by either a secured loan or a further advance against your mortgage and subject to your own financial circumstances. There are likely to be conditions with any such lending, and particularly where you have an existing mortgage you should check terms that may already be in place as to any further lending. The best person to advise you in the first instance will be your mortgage broker, bank or independent financial adviser. Bear in mind that borrowing against your home will always carry the risk of re-possession if you unable to make the repayments. Financial advisers will be able to discuss different options with you, as well as the potential for obtaining any other types of loan which may not need to be secured against your home. You should also remember that if you jointly own the property with another person, you will need their consent to use the property as security for the business. They will also likely need to obtain their own independent legal advice as a part of the lending process.

Q2 I am planning on working from home in 2016.

Do I need any kind of insurance of other official certification?

This may depend upon the nature of the work that you do and if you require any minimum levels of insurance to be in place. Your mortgage lender and home insurance company may also be required to give their approval and again this will depend upon the type of work you undertake. You will also need

to consider whether you are covered in respect of any risks to visitors to your property and therefore consider whether you are adequately covered for public liability insurance. Similarly, if you use your vehicle for business purposes you will need to upgrade your level of insurance to include this, particularly if you will be travelling to different places for your work. Bear in mind that if you have valuable equipment at your home as a result of using it as a workplace, this may fall outside the scope of your home and contents insurance. You should speak to an insurance broker as to the appropriate levels of cover.

Q3 We are an online business but our HQ & servers are based in an area that is susceptible to flooding. Do we have to declare this to new and existing clients? It sometimes happens but hasn't for years.

You must be careful not to misrepresent the reliability of the service you are offering. You should assess whether the risk of flooding is reasonably foreseeable and be honest with any existing, new or prospective clients as to any difficulties you may have experienced previously. It may be worth considering (if possible) whether the risk is great enough that moving your HQ and servers would impact less on your business in this respect. In any event, you should look to implement a flood plan and what will happen if your business is affected by flooding. You should also consider updating your terms and conditions of business to include provision for what will happen if an event occurs which is outside of your control and stops your business from providing the goods or services under the contract. These clauses are commonly known as "force majeure" clauses.

Q4 How often should you update your original business plan? Would a Solicitor charge just to look it over?

You should update your business plan regularly and in accordance with your business needs; for some businesses this may be as frequent as at least once a month to review planned estimates for the month against actual figures and performance. It is also advisable to do this whenever circumstances change which may alter the direction your business takes, for example, winning or losing a contract tender. As a minimum, you should look to conduct a thorough overhaul once year. A solicitor will be able to provide advice to you about the legal decisions which may impact on the growth of your business, for example, renewing a lease of premises, any employment law difficulties, or the best way to contract with third parties to minimise the risk against any claims.

Solicitors should set out any costs they may charge for considering your business plan at the outset, and may be able to agree a cap or fixed fee for doing so, although it may be best to speak to your independent financial adviser or accountant in the first instance regarding your business plan.

Sponsored cycle ride to raise funds to provide work skills experience for people with acquired brain injuries

Gaining work experience after leaving school or university can be a difficult task, as some of us may have experienced when starting out on the career ladder. However, for those who have experienced a head injury as a result of a road traffic accident, stroke or a long term neurological condition, it can seem like an impossible task.

Novero Specialist Care at Oak Farm & Oak Court, Taverham on the outskirts of Norwich, specialise in residential, nursing and rehabilitation for people recovering from their head injuries. For some, part of that rehabilitation is the desire to return to some form of work in the community, whether paid or voluntary. However, opportunities to work close to the rehabilitation units at Oak Farm & Oak Court currently do not exist – it is important for people recovering that they are close to support staff at the rehabilitation units with easy access (by wheelchair or by walking) so that they can build confidence from working in the community in familiar surroundings.

52 miles in one day

Sally King and Anita Lusher of North Norfolk Coastal Fitness are walking two marathons, 52 miles, in one day to raise funds for Mind Norwich.

Hannah Butler-Bird, physiotherapist and Sue Hudson, occupational therapist from Novero Specialist Care, aim to raise funds from a 150 mile cycle ride across England from the West coast to the East coast (Whitehaven, Cumbria to Tynemouth, Newcastle) on Saturday 21 May in order to set up a charity shop in the Taverham/Drayton area. It is hoped that people from Novero Specialist Care (as well as those attending the local acquired brain injury rehabilitation charity Headway Norfolk and Waveney in Norwich) will be able to develop and practice their work skills in the charity shop under the guidance of a shop manager, therapy and support staff as part of their therapy/ rehabilitation programmes.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are pleased to be able to report that Harvey is now back to his normal self, jumping up the front of his pen to get the attention, and a few cuddles, from his carers. His coat is also starting to grow quite nicely and we can see what a handsome boy he will be.

He is, however, not the only cat in care at present that has needed to be shaved. Flo, a pretty little tabby girl, just two years old this month, was abandoned by her heartless owner when she moved. She had not been given the kind of care and attention that a long haired cat requires and had a lot of knots close to her skin (which must have been very painful for her). A quick visit to the vets, where her tummy and chest were shaved, has resulted in a much happier little cat. Flo is a very gentle and loving little girl and deserved better treatment than this. However, she is now safe in our care and we will find her a home where she will get the love and attention she deserves.

Garfie, one of the cats that came in with the pregnant mum, has now had a further blood test which confirms he is FIV positive, as a consequence of Grooming Parlour which, he will need an indoor home. At the time of writing, Full Grooming & we are waiting to Hydrobathing hear whether or not a Kerstin Rogers Available lady who already has 01692 501212 an FIV positive cat 07817 179228 will give him a new home. No Dull Fridays

There is rarely a dull day at the vets, but last Friday was a really unusual and exciting day.

At 10pm that night we still had four vets and a nurse working having had a run of serious emergencies.

It started with a road traffic accident where we had a young cat brought in with serious head trauma.

She required treatment for shock, x-rays and hospitalisation.

A little while later an English Bull Dog, Jimmy, presented collapsed and very weak. Ultrasound examination revealed he had a ruptured spleen causing internal bleeding. He was immediately rushed to theatre to have his spleen removed (dogs cope fine without a spleen) and it became evident at this time that, even for a large dog, he had lost a lot

a lovely, friendly and cuddly boy, we are hopeful of a happy outcome.

At present, we have two little kittens in care, which arrived from an outdoor situation at about one week old (we do have a waiting list for kittens, so these and other ones in care, will probably be reserved as soon as we are sure they will survive). Obviously, hand rearing kittens is not the ideal situation; they do thrive better if with their mother until at least 8 weeks old. However, we always try to give these kittens a good start by Jessie, lovely little cat, a lovely feeding them with special kitten milk gentle girl, very laid back and and, once they start to eat, special quite lazy too! kitten biscuits and kitten pouches.

Although the kitten milk and weaning biscuits are expensive and not available in pet shops, they do make a real difference. With no mother to teach them, their carers also have to ensure they interact with them and encourage them to learn hunting and playing skills. With years of experience, their carers know that these kittens will require more of their time to ensure they develop into well-adjusted cats.

of blood. As a result we contacted a wonderfully generous dog owner who had requested to be on our blood donor list and within 2 hours were able to provide Jimmy with a unit of blood that helped to save his life.

While all this was going on we had another call about a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (pictured) called Effie who had suddenly developed a huge swelling in her groin. This is a very unusual occurrence in an older dog and when I examined her, she had a lump the size of a grapefruit that had not been there earlier that day. We ultrasound scanned the mass and found it contained abdominal contents that had herniated through the inguinal region of her abdomen. Again she was rushed through the theatre (thank goodness for great nurses!) and we opened up the hernia to find that she had an infected womb that had become so large it had caused the rupture and forced its way out of her abdomen! I suspect I will never see this kind of thing again, but animals really are amazing, especially given that once we removed her uterus and fixed the hernia she was back to her usual self within days!

You will also be pleased to know that both our other patients from that fateful night are also recovering and doing well.

Needless to say, we all slept well the next night!

RNLI 10th Anniversary Season Patrol

RNLI lifeguard service in partnership with North Norfolk District Council returns for 10th anniversary season patrolling Norfolk beaches The RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, first teamed up with North Norfolk District Council in 2007 to provide beach patrols at Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Sea Palling.

A decade later the service has expanded along the East Anglia coast to 16 beaches, including at West Runton (new for this year), East Runton and Wells in North Norfolk, as well as beaches in the Great Yarmouth area and Suffolk.

Four veteran RNLI lifeguards have been ever present since that first day 10 years ago Vincent Pank, Sam Kendrick, Scott Davidson and Chris Wall.

Vincent, who has risen through the ranks to become Lifeguard Manager, said ‘We were breaking new ground when we took on the lifeguard service for North Norfolk District Council in 2007, as it was the first time RNLI lifeguards had patrolled anywhere on the east coast of the UK.

‘It’s been an incredible 10 years since then, saving lives and keeping people safe. We have gone from having 15 lifeguards patrolling a handful of beaches to employing around 65 people at 16 locations along the length of the Norfolk coast and into Suffolk.

‘So much has happened throughout the past decade, but most rewarding for me is seeing how our presence and reputation has grown within the communities we work in. I think we were seen as a novelty at the start, but we’ve earned the trust and respect of people who now seek out our advice, whether that is the public, lifeboat crews, emergency services or landowners.’

Leader of North Norfolk District Council Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said ‘We’re proud of what has been achieved in partnership with the RNLI over the past 10 years.

‘Ensuring the safety of our beaches is paramount and having lifeguards on duty when North Norfolk is at its busiest means visitors and residents can have peace of mind

while enjoying our beautiful coastline.

‘The lifeguards are a skilled team and our admiration and thanks go to all of them for their dedication and bravery over the past decade.’

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said ‘Our beaches, four of which have Blue Flag status, are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people each year. The hard work of the RNLI lifeguards has kept these people safe.’

The wages for RNLI lifeguards along the North Norfolk coast at Cromer, Sea Palling, Sheringham, Mundesley are funded by NNDC, with training, equipment, lifeguard stations, vehicles, support services and management all provided by the RNLI.

Within the NNDC purvey there are three permanent lifeguard units at Wells, Sea Palling and Sheringham West. Temporary units have been installed at Sheringham East, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer West, Cromer East and Mundesley. They will be taken down in September.

Since 2010* RNLI lifeguards in East Anglia have saved 18 lives, rescued 177 people and given medical care 4,001 times.

RNLI lifeguards resumed patrols of five beaches in Norfolk on Saturday 7 May (Sheringham West, Cromer East, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Gorleston) and two in Suffolk on 21 May (Lowestoft South and Southwold North).

A further nine beaches will be patrolled from Saturday 2 July.

These are Wells, Sheringham East, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer West, Hemsby, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft North and Southwold South.

The questions are so challenging that scoring any marks at all is considered an achievement worthy of a certificate.

This year’s questions ranged from a chemical system for storing energy, the chemistry of tungsten and the complicated synthesis of a drug.

Students have to apply their skills and knowledge to unusual problems, a skill which the RSC is keen to develop amongst our A level students and which will stand them in good stead on the demanding science university courses Paston students aim for.

Alice Arnold calls Mayday for the RNLI, inspired by iconic shipping forecast Former presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast, Alice Arnold, revisits Cromarty, Hebrides, Dogger and Humber, as she reads the ‘Mayday Forecast’ to encourage the public to support the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The ‘Mayday Forecast’ follows the well-known rhythm and regions of this established British bulletin, but instead of predicting weather conditions, it predicts the number of distress calls the RNLI will respond to this year.

Maritime distress calls can come in 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with 4,700 volunteer crew members across the UK and Ireland on standby to drop everything in an instant to save lives at sea.

It was neatly timed to coincide with last bank holiday weekend’s RNLI Mayday campaign, the charity’s own call for help to raise the money needed to keep the RNLI and its 237 lifeboat stations operating.

Based on 2015 figures, the Mayday Forecast predicts approximately 8,200 people will be rescued and hundreds of lives will be saved by the RNLI’s volunteer crews around the coasts of the UK and Ireland in 2016. If 2015 is anything to go by, lifeboat crews will spend more than 229,000 hours at sea.

Forecast predictions demonstrate the scale of the RNLI’s rescue operations. The lifesaving charity relies on the generosity of the public and the forecast urges listeners to support this year’s Mayday campaign.

These include: • North East including Tyne, Dogger and Humber. 597 call outs. 1 rescue in force 11 violent storm conditions, 3 rescues in force 10 storms. 682 people rescued. 32 lives saved’ • ‘Republic of Ireland including Fastnet, Shannon. 829 call outs. Range of conditions, often rough. 1 launch in force 11 storm conditions. 965 people rescued and 24 lives saved’ • ‘Hunstanton to Dungeness including Dover.

The RNLI is close to Alice Arnold’s heart.

She said ‘The dedication of volunteer lifeboat crews around our coastlines is awe inspiring. When the pager goes off, they drop everything to go and save lives, often in treacherous conditions.

I have really enjoyed reading the Mayday Forecast, highlighting the sheer number of rescues anticipated in 2016. It has been fun to do, and vitally important. I’d encourage everyone to support the RNLI to help the charity continue their life saving work.'

Trio Compete at Regional Gymnastic Final

In early April, 12 gymnasts from North Walsham Gymnastic Club attended the UEA to compete at the Norfolk County Grades where they passed with flying colours, with many achieving a distinction for their efforts! Olivia Shingles, Tia Talbot and Tilly Owen came in the top three in their individual groups, qualifying to represent the County at the Regional finals.

On Sunday 1 May, the three gymnasts together with their head coach and some younger gymnasts and parents who were inspired by the girls previous achievement at the UEA so came along for support and to cheer them on, set off for Pipers Vale Gymnastic Club in Ipswich. All the girls had clean rounds and did their best on the day with Tia coming 10th (level 5 age 10/11) Olivia 7th (level 4 age 10) and Tilly 8th (level 4 age11/12).

The Club is continuing to progress with securing their own premises. Head coach Alexis Thurston said “We’ve had some amazing support with our recent ‘Go Fund Me’ fundraiser for our foam pit.

The gymnasts, coaches, parents, friends and families have donated very generously and we have so far managed to raise a massive £3,791. Other local charities have also been donating to our cause as well as many other organisations who have contributed to the cost of new equipment that will be required when the time comes to move.”

Arsenal vs. Norwich Review In what was yet another loss for Norwich fans, they could perhaps take some encouragement from the late kick off game against Arsenal who came out 1-0 victors. Norwich started off the match in positive fashion with Redmond testing Petr Cech in the early minutes of the game.

Norwich continued to perform well for the first half using a very good counter attacking style of play whilst also managing to defend relatively well.

In the latter stages off the first half Norwich started to make more chances for themselves with another good chance through Nathan Redmond at the back post but only for Cech to make another good save keeping Arsenal in the game.

However, Norwich were unable to capitalise on their first half chances, which proved to be costly.

The real game changing moment for me came in the 56th minute when Danny Welbeck was brought on for Alex Iwobi and he had an instant impact on the game. As soon as he came on, he started to stretch the Norwich defence, which paid dividends when he volleyed Arsenal ahead from

Giroud’s knockdown. After the goal, Norwich could not continue with their first half form failing to regain momentum to try to get a point out of the game, which could end up proving to be vital in the relegation run in.

Unfortunately, Newcastle and Sunderland managed to pick up points at the weekend leaving Norwich in a precarious position in 19th place.

Norwich vs. Manchester Utd Review Norwich yet again succumbed to another loss in the early kick off on Saturday 7 May with relegation looking a near certain.

Norwich started the game in a similar fashion when they faced Arsenal away, immediately forcing pressure on the United defence, which ultimately should have ended in a goal.

In the early minutes, Cameron Jerome missed another gilt-edged chance that could have proved pivotal in the relegation battle as he headed a chance from six yards, straight at David De Gea. This summed up Norwich’s season as a whole as well as the season that Cameron Jerome has had, which has been poor overall.

half as they created very few chances for themselves. Norwich were organised at the back and forced United into making errors.

Alex Neil made a change in the 60th minute to take off Robbie Brady for Mbokani in the hope of getting 3 points out of the game with United there for the taking. I feel this change had an impact on the game, as I believe that Jerome should have been taken off over Brady.

Around ten minutes after this change was made, Sebastien Bassong mistimed a header, which allowed Rooney to run clear of him to then find Juan Mata who slotted home from close range after Olsson failed to track his run. This result makes relegation a near certainty unless Newcastle and Sunderland manage to lose their remaining games.

STOP PRESS - Despite a great final win against Watford 4-2, Sunderland beat Everton 3-0, to relegate the Canries and Newcastle to the Championship.

North Walsham Table Tennis NWCSCA Retail Ko Doubles Cup

The first of this season’s four concluding Cup Finals took place at Trunch Village Hall as NWSCA’s Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Andy Beane and Howard Lupton battled NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Joe Kirkup in the final of the Knockout Doubles Cup, umpired by Peter Ward. The match featured good attacking games throughout mixed in with some stern defence, particularly from Lupton who also served cleverly to restrict the loop of Kirkup while there was great use of angled shots to win points from Beane. After Lupton and Beane won the first set of the opener at a canter, Price and Elliott did the same in the second with some great attacking winners – however they were unable to repeat their form in the next two as the NWSCA duo won in four.

Kirkup and Elliott missed an opportunity at 10-9 in the third set of the second battle, with Baldock-Yaxley and Beane coming through 12-10 to close out their win in straight.

NWSCA were soon 3-0 ahead as Beane and Baldock-Yaxley outsmarted Kirkup and Price tactically to also win in three. Some great attacking winners from Elliott and Price in the fourth battle made the match look far from

over as they took the first against BaldockYaxley and Lupton and took a 6-1 lead in the second, but the NWSCB duo were unable to keep the momentum as the NWSCA pairing battled back to win 9-11, 12-10, 11-2, 11-2.

That missed second set proved to be the last chance for NWSCB as a straight sets win for Beane and Lupton against Kirkup and Price sealed NWSCA’s 5-0 win.

The same NWSCB trio were back two days later for the Knockout Singles Cup final, this time against the Gresham’s School A trio of Robin Thaxter, Hubert Cheng and Haken Bennell. Trunch was again the venue with Derek Philpott in the umpire’s chair. Thaxter opened against Kirkup, who earlier in the League season had beaten him with a sizzling performance. A close first set saw Thaxter return Kirkup’s top-spin attack to narrowly take it 12-10 before Thaxter’s defence and counter-attack took control to win in straight.

Next up was Cheng against Elliott with a 45 year difference between the two. Cheng used a short serve down the table and followed with a smash return to win many points. Elliott The Vikings rounded off their season by winning the Woodforde's Norfolk Cup Final against Diss 40-0.

In the semi final the previous week (see picture) they overwhelmed Norwich 68 -12. In league status North Walsham are Norfolk's leading club so this was a competition they were expected to win. The Raiders were also in action in the 2nd team final losing to Holt 2nds 33-19.

The Club's undefeated Under 12s side were introduced to the crowd at the Norwich game. Amongst their achievements was winning the ‘Leicester Tigers Land Rover Premiership Cup’, meaning they will take their place in the ‘Parade of Champions’ before a capacity crowd at the

The fourth battle saw Cheng and Kirkup back in action – two very talented teenagers who show what a bright future there is for our League. This was a fast attacking game with some excellent rallies and hard hitting. Cheng took the first before Kirkup immediately hit back to level but mistakes in timing cost him in the third and a closer fourth as Cheng moved Gresham’s School A one win from the Cup. Five times North Norfolk champion Thaxter was his usual consistent self against Price and used all of his experience to bring mistakes from his opponent as his win in straight sealed Gresham’s successful defence with a 5-0 win.

Attention now turns to the annual Rugby Sevens and Beer Festival at Scottow on Sunday 29 May, with sevens rugby all day from 11am to around 7pm.

The men's tournament includes 20 teams, the women's eight and there is a touch rugby competition too.
