North Walsham in Bloom had a major piece of luck last week when we were approached by a group of young people from all the local high schools under the banner of ‘The National Citizen Service’ and asked if they could help us in anyway. This wonderful group of 26 young people took on the clearing of our second bed in Grammar School Road, and did a really excellent job.

In the space of two hours on Thursday morning they had the bed cleared and all the weed suppressant piled in a heap ready for us to take away over the next few weeks. This was a job we had all been dreading, as the first bed took us several hours over quite a few days to achieve, and to say we are very grateful is an understatement. A more helpful, pleasant and hardworking group of young people would be hard to find.

What a shame this age group are under appreciated by some of us older generation.

We will now be able to go ahead in the spring with a planting project which will mirror the first bed we set up earlier this year.

Our summer maintenance work continues apace and we are at present working on a three week system to keep the town looking as good as we can. We do have several other future projects in mind which should be brought to fruition in the early part of next year.

Summer comes to an end but the need for blood is constant

In September, as the summer holidays end, children head back to school and people return to work. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in the local area to make sure giving blood is part of their routine.

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking blood donors new and old to make an appointment to donate blood to help keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months.

Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect enough blood in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do so.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We need to maintain healthy blood stocks all year round to make sure patients get the blood they need whenever they need it. Some of our donors might have recently been abroad to somewhere that means they need to take a short break from donating. So whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about giving blood for the first time, check out if your foreign holiday has affected whether you can donate now. If you can donate, please book an appointment to give blood and save lives. You never know when you or your loved one may need a life saving transfusion.”

Blood is always required to treat patients for a range of reasons. It is used in accidents and emergencies but also during surgery and treatment for cancer and blood disorders, like sickle cell anaemia.

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

A record five students go to Oxbridge

A record five Paston Sixth Form College students received very special news, learning they had secured places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities for September 2014.

The five students celebrated a string of A* and A grades, enabling them to gain places at the highly competitive Universities. Being part of the College’s A+ and Oxbridge Programme supported the students with their applications, personal statements and interviews. The Schemes have been very successful increasing the numbers each year aiming for Oxbridge or the top Russell Group Universities.

Outstanding A Level Results for Paston Students

Students at Paston Sixth Form College achieved impressive A Level and BTEC results when they were published last month.

The College was particularly pleased that 20 A Level subjects had a 100% pass rate and 10 A Level subjects had over 50% of students achieving top A*-B grades.

Paston’s A Level pass rate remained at 98% with 70% achieving A*-C grades. At BTEC, students achieved 100% pass rates with 71% gaining top grades.

Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “I am particularly proud of students who have maintained our very high standards, but this year have not had the opportunity to resit modules in January. Our 2014 results are again outstanding and I am very proud of all the students and staff at the College.”

The number of young people choosing to study at Paston Sixth Form College continues to be impressive. Students are travelling from an ever

wider area to become part of our success. The College continues to improve facilities with over £4m invested in a new Student Services Area, Study Centre and The Scarburgh Science Centre. A new £1.5m Art and Theatre Centre will be opened in 2015 to further enhance our reputation of providing a wide range of top quality courses.

“These outstanding results reflect our encouragement of students to work hard, have high aspirations and develop the skills to be extremely successful. Universities throughout the Country will be receiving talented young graduates from Norfolk this Autumn as a result.” said Mr Grieve.

Mr Grieve’s concluding verdict was “Outstanding A Level and BTEC results achieved by talented students expertly and enthusiastically taught

by Paston Sixth Form Colleges’ specialist teachers. Well done to all involved!”

54 Hole Golf Marathon at Links

Captain’s charity golf marathon was rounded off in style with a 20 foot putt for par on the 54th hole.

Liz Hewett, the Ladies Captain at the Links Golf Club, West Runton raised over £1,200 for Canine Partners by completing the challenge of playing 54 holes in eleven hours on the 23rd August.

Members and supporters had gathered around the final green to cheer Liz home. As the shadows lengthened, Liz holed a spectacular putt from off the green to complete the day.

Liz, who only got back into playing golf 3 years ago said, ‘I would like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported me in this challenge’.

‘I am pleased to have been able to raise so much money for such a great cause by playing a game I love. To get a par on the last hole was a dream finish to a special day’.

Her day had started at 7:30 in the morning with the first 9 holes which were played with club vice-captain Tim McCrohon.

A different playing partner and caddy accompanied Liz for each of her 9 holes and she was well supported in the clubhouse with collections and sponsorship.

The £1,200 will be added to money already raised during her year as Ladies Captain and will all go to her chosen charity Canine Partners who provide assistance dogs for people with disabilities.

What a great summer it’s been – we’ve not stopped since Whitsun and the restaurant is still extremely busy as we move into September.

Out of all our dishes on the a la carte this year the most popular and best-reviewed is undoubtedly our fabulous Cromer lobster. We get ours directly from John Davies and to keep them as fresh as possible they are on 24-hour order only, but if you are adventurous they are good fun to prepare yourself – and they are great with our own garlic and chilli sauce.

John and Ann Graveling grow our chillis for us in the greenhouse, ranging from mild to, shall we say, intense. One of our kitchen porters was feeling brave and took on a whole red chilli last week and nearly had to dash across to Cromer Hospital for emergency treatment…!

Chilli sauce 1 red pepper (deseeded) 2 red chilli peppers (deseeded) 100ml white wine vinegar 100g caster sugar 100ml water

Cromer Lobster with Sweet Chilli and Garlic Spread garlic butter on the lobster, then coat with chilli sauce.

Bake in the oven gas mark 5 for 10-15 minutes.

Feel free to eat with your fingers!

Place all the ingredients in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for ten minutes until the liquid turns pinkish.

Cool, then place in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Return to the pan and cook for twenty minutes until sticky.

Using a sharp knife, cut the lobster in half lengthways (you may need some force!)

Remove all the brownish-grey interior and discard.

Take the rest of the meat out of the shell, brush inside of the shell with chilli sauce and replace the superb tail meat in the shell.

Crack open the claws and remove the meat; place in the shell too.

This concert, arranged by FALCON (Festival of Arts and Literature for Children in Norfolk) in association with St Andrew’s Church is the last one this year so do come along and join us.

Jazz at The Hub - It’s Back!

The Hub is the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre and the local jazz fraternity will remember when the genre was a monthly feature at the venue. The events were very popular and the intention now is to work with the many high quality jazz musicians in the region to promote small combinations on a monthly basis. We would like the Hub to become a “jazz beacon” on the North Norfolk Coast said Debbie Thompson, the theatre director”.

The programme starts on Sunday 21 September with the Simon Brown Trio. Simon (piano) graduated from the UEA in 1990 and has established himself in the eastern region as a tutor, performer, arranger, musical director and, of course, band leader. He regularly performs with a wide range of top UK and international artists and plays at jazz clubs and festivals around the country. His fellow musicians will be Ivars Galenieks (double bass) and Brian McAllister (drums). Ivars comes from Riga in Latvia and is a graduate of the Latvian State

Conservatoire where he studied piano, oboe and bass. He has a varied and interesting musical pedigree which encompasses classical music and jazz. Brian became a professional musician in 1966 and played summer seasons, shows, nightclubs and other gigs as he learnt his trade. He is passionate about jazz and regularly accompanies top British and international musicians.

Other dates and bands are: Sunday 19 October, The Pinewood Saxophone Quartet. Sunday 23 November, The Red Shadow Quartet. Sunday 14 December, The Tom Harris Trio. North Walsham Photographic Group’s Competition

North Walsham Photographic Club hosted a successful annual public competition and members’ exhibition at the Atrium during the week from 19th August, displaying over 180 prints from local amateur photographers and 76 prints of the members’ own work. Although the competition was divided into five categories – four adult sections and Juniors (u16), the overall theme was ‘Anything Norfolk’, and it was fitting that a local judge - Bill Day (CPAGB) - presided over the entries.

While commenting that, generally, the standard was extremely high, he singled out two categories which he regarded as particularly impressive, namely the ‘Nature’ section in the adult competition, and the Juniors.

Of the former, he had deliberated for many hours over which ones should be given awards, and felt that many photographs overlooked this time could do well in future competitions. He was especially delighted by the exceptionally high standard, both photographically and imaginatively, of the Juniors’ entries: he acknowledged that tomorrow’s camera clubs are dependent upon juniors entering competitions and exhibitions like this one, and felt assured that the future of North Norfolk clubs was secured by such rising talent. NWPG conveys its thanks both to the Atrium and to all the organisers.

The overall winner of the Adult sections was Norman Tottle, who was awarded a Nikon D5300 camera and the junior winner, Caitlin Rickets received the Nikon 1 S2 camera. In the Members’ Exhibition, visitors to the Atrium were invited to vote for ‘The People’s Choice’: Ray Woolcock’s magnificent photograph, 'Sunbeams', was a worthy winner.

At Hayes + Storr, we are increasingly being contacted by clients for legal advice in relation to loss of confidence in their financial advisors.

As in all professions, including the legal sector, there are good and bad people, but what should clients do when they believe the advice given is inadequate, not tailored to their circumstances or just plain wrong?

Complaint to Financial Conduct Authority Firms and individuals can only conduct regulated financial activities in the UK if they are registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to do so. When engaging a financial advisor, always check their status in the FCA register, which can be found on the organisation’s website.

If you have already engaged a financial advisor regulated by the FCA and are unhappy with their conduct or services, then the FCA provides a service resolving disputes. You may wish to engage a solicitor to assist you in bringing your complaint to the attention of the FCA. The first step is to put your complaint in writing to the financial advisor concerned and ask for the matter to be investigated and for a

written response. The financial advisor will have a maximum time period of eight weeks to respond. If not response is received or you are unhappy with the response, you can then contact the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) for investigate the complaint on your behalf.

A complaint to the FOS is a free and independent service that aims to resolve disputes between clients and their financial advisors, but it is not suitable for every case.

If you and your solicitor decide to make a complaint, the FOS will consider its content and ask the financial advisor for their version of events before making a decision. However, you should be aware that the parties do not have to accept the decision made by the FOS. Depending on the circumstances of the complaint, it may be more appropriate to make a civil claim in the County Court to recover your losses.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Kittens arrive in care in all colours and sizes and it is interesting to just compare the different starts in life the ones in care have experienced.

There are the kittens which arrived having been found in a local boatyard. At present they are still being socialised as they had no contact with people before they arrived. On the same day, and from the same boatyard, we took in two more kittens, only about two days old, which have been hand reared. We also have three kittens which joined us from a feral colony. Fortunately, they were young enough to adapt quickly to their changed circumstances. Next, are eight kittens, born in care to one cat two days after she arrived! Mum is not very big, had already had at least one litter and, although one kitten gave us cause for concern, all have survived. Four more have come in having been born outside (the mum of two of these is also in care). The ones that came in with mum are very friendly and the other two, being slightly older and a little nervous to begin with, took a little longer to settle, but are now enjoying life in their pen. We also have two which have arrived via veterinary surgeons. One was handed in at four days old, (another hand rear) having, we were told, been found outside! The other, Mackintosh, had been in a road accident and requires cage rest. Unfortunately, no one has reported him missing. Finally, Tina, who spent the first night in care in my bathroom, came in with her siblings at two weeks old, (again requiring hand rearing), having been found in a drain pipe. I think Irene, who fostered all the hand rears, is now looking forward to an uninterrupted nights sleep!

We also have kittens come into care because their owners have too many cats or, having bred them to sell on the internet find, (because there are so many on there), they have not been able to sell them. With regard to selling online, our Head Office is working with other interested bodies, plus a MP (who is introducing a bill to parliament), to bring in more controls to prevent irresponsible breeding, and stop people passing cats

Aylsham Celebrates Fab Food

Celebrating the fabulous food available in and around the town, Aylsham's annual Food Festival, presented by Slow Food Aylsham, returns in October for its 9th great year.

Running from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 October, the Festival will feature a mixture of old favourites plus some new attractions to keep more than just the food fresh!

Chief among the innovations this year will be a visit from the London Vegetable Orchestra. Appearances on BBC TV, radio and ITV have ensured that the group's unique sounds are already known to a large audience. Crafting their instruments from a range of local vegetables, the Orchestra forms its brass section from courgettes, squashes and peppers, its wind instruments from carrots while percussion is provided from pumpkins. As Frank Skinner, presenter of the BBC's Room 101 commented "Health experts say you should listen to 5 of their songs a day!"

The London Vegetable Orchestra will be running introductory workshops at Aylsham High School on Saturday 27 September and on Food Festival Saturday, 4 October, they will be in the Market Place with workshops and a full scale performance at around 1pm. It's all free

but you do need to book for the September workshops at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk The Orchestra is being brought to Aylsham with the help of Creative Arts East, Norfolk County Council and Broadland District Council.

Food Festival Saturday will also see Aylsham's FARMAaccredited Farmers' Market offering fresh food, all sourced from with 30 miles of the town, plus street entertainment in the form of magicians from Davenports Magic Kingdom.

There will be Family Cooking workshops in the Town Hall and just outside, cooking demonstrations by top local chefs. Jazz band One Foot in the Groove will be on hand to provide music and when they finish at around 11.30, there will be more musical entertainment before the closing performance by the London Vegetable Orchestra.

Elsewhere, the Festival will be offering a host of food-related activities, including Kids Cooking Workshops in the Parish Church on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 October. Friday morning will see special displays and tasters from the Country Market in the Town Hall and on Friday evening, students from Aylsham

High School will be presenting the renowned Gala Dinner with after dinner talk from Blickling Hall's 'Mary and Kath', the cook and scullery maid!

After all the excitement of Saturday, the 2014 Aylsham Food Festival will be bowing out with the legendary Big Slow Breakfast in Aylsham Town Hall. Members of Slow Food Aylsham and friends will be donning their aprons to cook up 'Full English' for 120 guests, including representatives from the county-wide Norfolk Food & Drink Festival. The Norfolk Festival runs from 30 August to 12 October and Aylsham Food Festival is proud to present its closing 'feature weekend'.

Aylsham Food Festival is established as one of the premier events in Aylsham's calendar. With the exception of the Dinner and Breakfast, the whole Festival is free for the entire community so there's no reason not to pop along, particularly on Saturday 4th when activities will start at around 9am, continuing until 2pm. Members’ and Shareholders’ Day at North Norfolk Railway

Full details have been announced for the North Norfolk Railway’s fifth annual Members' and Shareholders’ Day, which will take place on Saturday 4 October.

Members' Day is our way of saying thank you to all 3000 members of the M&GN Joint Railway Society and all NNR shareholders, with free travel all day to supporters.

A special intensive timetable will be in place for the day, which will see as many Society engines and items of rolling stock in

service as possible. B12 8572 and Class 31 D5631 will be in traffic, as will our Quad-Art Set No.74.

Wissington, which will be visiting from the MidSuffolk Light Railway, is due to haul the Vintage Set.

The focus of the day will be on working to top up the remainder of the Y14:2014 Appeal, which currently stands 30% short of the target. We must raise these funds in order to steam our J15/Y14, on which much work has already taken

The Society shop at Weybourne will be open, as will be the Muddle and Go Nowhere Real Ale Bar Car.

We hope to also offer visitors shed tours of the rapidly expanding Weybourne works, subject to ongoing construction works being in a safe condition.

Galton Blackiston to Open 25th anniversary Thornage Hall Garden Fete

Thornage Hall is looking forward to the opening of their Garden Fete to celebrate their 25th Anniversary on 7 September by Galton Blackiston, the Michelin starred chef at Morston Hall. Galton, who has appeared on Anglia Television, Gary Rhodes Food Heros, Market Kitchen, Great British Menu and is a regular on Saturday Kitchen with James Martin (BBC) is always keen to promote seasonal and Norfolk produce. In response to being asked to open the fete he said “I am delighted to be opening this years Thornage Hall Garden Fete

this is a great opportunity to use high quality local organic produce from Thornage Hall in my cookery demonstration”

Preparations for the garden fete are now well underway. Over 700 people are expected to attend the Fete where they will be able to see the Thornage alpacas, take a guided walk around the farm, wander around a range of stalls from local businesses, as well as Thornage Hall’s own stalls with bio dynamic garden produce and hand made art and craft products on sale. Entertainment for the day will be provided by local bands East Coast, Trix ‘n Stix, and Jack Austin. Children will be entertained by a treasure hunt or playing the village games and there will be a debut performance of Macbeth by the Thornage Drama Group – a joint venture between people using services at Thornage Hall and pupils from Aylsham High School.

There will also be a dog show and

refreshments and a Barbeque selling Thornage’s own organic Beef Burgers and hot dogs.

Thornage Hall is a unique charity set in an idyllic setting in North Norfolk on the 70 acre Thornage estate. It aims to be an environmentally sustainable organisation providing supported living and work for adults with learning disabilities. The biodynamic farm provides work opportunities for service users as well as providing the food for the tenants in their five supported houses. As well as the farm they offer work in a range of day service activities in traditional arts and crafts including weaving, willow weaving, woodwork, art and bakery.

The products which demonstrate high levels of skills in traditional arts and craft and will be available for sale at the Garden Fete.

Thornage Hall also sells produce from the farm and workshops to local businesses in Holt and the surrounding area.

The Garden Fete opens at 11.30 on 7th September and will close at 4pm.

Miramar Carnival Dog Show

Many thanks to everyone that attended our Dog show on 2nd August. We were delighted with the turn out.

The have-a-go agility course proved very popular as did temptation alley with the temptations being just too tasty for most of the participants, while Gismo took a shine to the toys!

Winners included Phoebe for the fastest run down temptation alley and best sausage catcher.

Bracken and Merlin, two lovely labs won best rescues with their life stories. Best veteran was won by the oldest attendant at the show - Rioja.

Best ASBO was awarded to Snoop for running riot in the agility arena and the overall winner went to Gismo who kept us entertained throughout the afternoon with his fantastic personality! He then continued to entertain us with his new toy! Well done Gismo.

World War One Centenary Weekdend

At The Atrium North Walsham on Saturday September 6th and Sunday September 7th between 10am and 5.30pm.

Admission is free. Warhorse will be shown on Saturday at 11am and 2.30pm and The Blue Max will be shown on Sunday at 2.30pm. Some tickets may still be available at the door.

The Norfolk Ukulele Orchestra will be performing during each lunch hour. The Living History Group will be drilling the children either outside or in the Gallery if wet. Children's paintings from the Library will be shown in the Gallery and . a digital version of the Book of Remembrance from the Church produced by the Vicar and incorporating pictures of 95 of the fallen will be shown on a continuous loop in the Cafeteria area.

If you are able to attend the event the Distinguished Guests will meet at 1300 hrs each day in the Hospitality Suite (HS) which is opposite the Reception in the Atrium. Then at about 1345 hrs will be shown the exhibits in the Atrium before being seated in the Theatre by 1430 hrs.

Norfolk Prepared Week 2014

Being caught in an emergency can be scary. Whether it’s severe weather, flooding or a power cut it’s good to know what to do to help yourself and those around you.

Every year the Norfolk Resilience Forum runs Norfolk Prepared Week to demonstrate the kinds of simple measures we can all take to make sure we’re ready for emergencies.

This year’s theme is to ‘Be Prepared and Stay Safe’.

Norfolk Prepared Week 2014 kicks off at the Forum in Norwich on the 20th September 10am to 4pm with a whole range of interesting events, demonstrations, activities and competitions with some cool prizes.

During the day you’ll be able to pick up top tips on everything from fire safety to First Aid, online safety, flood protection and more. There will also be some live demonstrations including car cutting from the Emergency Services and the launch of our App.

And of course you’ll be able to meet someone who’s always ready for an emergency….Ready Eddy the Emergency Teddy!

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action today, Saturday 23rd August, to a yacht which had been anchored of Happisburgh since early morning.

Coast Watch at Happisbugh had been keeping an eye on the yacht and had not seen anyone on board so contacted Humber Coastguard, who in turn requested Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Douglas Paley to launch in order to check the yacht.

At 1:39pm the Atlantic 75 hit the water with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Charlotte Siely and Jack Torne as crew. Five minutes later they were alongside “Barjewel of RHU”, where they found the crew safe and well although the yacht had a mechanical problem, which they were working on and expected to finish soon. Happisburgh crew made sure the crew of the yacht were able to contact Humber Coastguard by radio before returning to station.

At 2.20pm the Douglas Paley was re-housed and ready for service.

Norman Lamb opens new village shop in Dilham pub Norfolk Community Service have funded new convenience store, farm shop and deli.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has officially opened the first completed project to have been supported by the Norfolk Community Service Fund, a new convenience store, farm shop and delicatessen at the Cross Keys Pub in Dilham.

Norman Lamb commented “The village pub has traditionally been a focal point of community life in villages across Norfolk, and it is incredibly important that they continue to play a vibrant and active role.

“Initiatives like this, with pubs offering extra services like a village shop, don’t just protect the future of our pubs, but they can also provide a valuable facility for local residents, and I know that this model has already proved incredibly successful in other places. I wish the Cross Keys the very best of luck!�

Football clubs in the top divisions will be allowed to introduce safe standing areas into their grounds, under manifesto plans unveiled by the Liberal Democrats.

Safe standing already operates in domestic leagues across Europe, including Germany, Austria and Sweden and is backed by 92% of football fans and 70% of football clubs in the UK.

Under the plans clubs would be allowed to work with their supporters to introduce standing areas, which provide better atmospheres and allow clubs to offer cheaper safe standing season tickets.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said: “The Liberal Democrats believe football clubs should be allowed to introduce safe standing areas where there is support for this from local fans. Safe standing is allowed in many other sports and, with robust safety measures, we believe it should be allowed in football.

“I certainly don’t want to see a return to the terraces of the 1980s. Modern safe standing areas are quite different, using ‘rail seating’, and operate very successfully in top tier football across Europe.

“When clubs and fans are in favour of safe standing and it can be done safely, then the Government shouldn’t get in the way. That is why Liberal Democrats want to change the law to let clubs introduce safe standing.

“Safe standing offers supporters more choice, a better atmosphere and cheaper tickets. It is an idea whose time has come and I am proud that it is the Liberal Democrats who are the first political party to commit to delivering this.�

The report, which was commissioned by North Norfolk District Council after pressure from Norman Lamb and local councillors following coastal damage in the tidal surge last year, recommended a number of options for defending the coast at Ostend.

Norman Lamb will now write to the Environment Secretary asking if she will meet with a delegation from North Norfolk, including local residents and NNDC, to discuss the threat to homes at Ostend.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “We have to fight for social justice for coastal communities. Scientists have predicted that as a result of global climate change, severe weather events like the coastal surge in December last year could become much more frequent. It is essential that those who live on the front line are not left to face the consequences alone, and I am determined to stand up for fair treatment for those living on our coastline.�

So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated it’s guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. How do you treat veins on the face?

Sclerotherapy is very valuable for treatment of leg veins but laser and IPL treatment is safer and better for facial veins. Facial redness and spider veins are a common cosmetic and medical complaint. These are particularly common in rosacea suffers. Common associations are seen with sun damage, a fair complexion, stress, spicy foods and fluctuations in temperature which exacerbate rosacea symptoms. As with many conditions, genetics plays a role too. Numerous treatments are available but laser and light based treatments are the gold-standard treatment options. What are venous lakes and can you treat these?

Venous lakes a common condition but unfortunately there is a lack of awareness even amongst the health professionals. Venous lakes are dark blue to violet compressible small swelling caused by swelling of venules. These are common on sun-exposed skin. They also commonly occur on lips and are uncommon before 50 years of age. We have patients travelling from all over the country to see us and so far we have managed to clear all of these in just one or two sessions.

What other vein related conditions can you treat?

We can treat veins and blemishes such as angiomas, spider naevi, birthmarks and lumps and bumps anywhere on the body. With hand veins and blue veins on the temples it is better to disguise these veins by using fillers or fat injections rather than remove or zap these with the lasers as these may be normal veins which have started to become visible due to loss of volume.

The celebration night for the West Runton Pavilion is now hotting up!

Future Radio Presenter and DJ Nigel Pearce from the Monday Morning Session last week interviewed live on air Jet Black drummer with The Stranglers who played at The Pavilion on 5 March 1981. Jet was still very strong about his memories of that night, and the audience reaction. He sent his best wishes for a successful night and promised that a couple of signed photographs of the band will be sent along with the band's good wishes‌ more great memories! Friends of Holt Hall 2014/15: A new charity, a new bursary fund

The Friends of Holt Hall is a new Registered Charity and has been launched in North Norfolk to support work with young people, to promote their active engagement with the environment and to develop opportunities for their social and emotional wellbeing. Its charitable purposes are focussed on education and the environment, conservation and heritage, with a particular interest in accessibility to more disadvantaged groups of young people, including people with disabilities. The Bursary scheme will be managed as a designated fund in a dedicated account by The Friends of Holt Hall, administered by The Hon Treasurer.

The Friends of Holt Hall provide an important link between the local community and the Holt Hall Environmental & Outdoor Learning Centre.

This is community leadership in action, helping the environmental education centre navigate the challenging economic climate and thus preserve a vital resource for us all in Norfolk.

Charities and community ventures need to set themselves a challenging mission: in the case of the Friends of Holt Hall, our mission is to support the learning, leisure opportunities and activities provided through Holt Hall; ensuring access for all.

To pursue this mission, the Friends announce the launch of a new Bursary Scheme to promote access to the full range of Holt Hall services for the most inclusive range of young

The target for the Bursary Fund is to raise £5000 in each of the next three years as matched funding to facilitate access to outdoor learning in the natural world for young people.

This should allow 6-10 additional students to participate in courses every week. The funds will be released to the Holt Hall Study Centre to fund access by as many young people as possible at the discretion of The Friends.

Too many young people in our country today have little opportunity to experience and learn from life outdoors and the natural world.

Whilst Norfolk is a rural county, rich in its natural environment, there are several seriously disadvantaged wards in our city and our towns where young people have no access at all to these experiences and opportunities. This is also true of areas across the whole of the Eastern Region.

We are very pleased to say we have now achieved Registered Charity status and the focus for our work at present is to raise money for these Student Bursaries. These have been set up to support as many students as possible to attend the centre to enhance their education and learning skills. Holt Hall has much to offer young people in terms of high quality environmental learning experiences, residential and day courses to schools, colleges and universities, but also helps young people to develop personally and socially. Its core programme of work with schools and students means over 3000 young people per year attend day and residential learning experiences in the natural world – experiences that they will never forget!

To pursue the target for £5000 in 2014/5, the Friends are exploring an active programme of fund-raising, including applications for relevant grants. These events are a chance for the whole community to get behind the valuable resource that is Holt Hall and contribute in modest but enjoyable ways.

Membership of ‘Friends of Holt Hall’ is open to all and is a real opportunity to get involved as well as contribute to funds through a very modest subscription of £12 per year. There is also a very active volunteer community assisting in the gardens and grounds.

Southrepps community to benefit from North Norfolk The Big Society Fund award where parents and carers can meet up and Big Society Fund grant has contributed to Southrepps watch their children play in a safe and fun

Southrepps children and their families can now enjoy new play equipment thanks to a grant from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund.

Two very popular ‘nest swings’ have been installed - suspended from large timber frames the nest swings provide great swinging fun for lots of children to enjoy all at the same time!

The swings were funded by a £5176 grant from NNDC’s Big Society Fund which has awarded grants totalling almost £900,000 to over eight community groups in the last two years for a range of projects that have been making a significant difference to the people of North Norfolk.

Parish Council’s fantastic fundraising efforts which have enabled them to provide £47,000 worth of play equipment, together with fencing and signage, creating a safe, welcoming and fun environment for the local community to enjoy.

Summer exhibition at The Gallery Norfolk, Cromer 6th-27th September

The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer is spotlighting two Norfolk artists for its second annual summer exhibition: Leon Bunnewell, whose solo show a year ago made him one of the gallery’s most sought-after painters, and his daughter Ruth Bunnewell, also a well-established name, but exhibiting at the gallery for the first time.

The artistic line in the Bunnewell family runs from Leon’s father, Leonard – a keen painter who in the 1960s established an annual exhibition for amateur artists in Great Yarmouth – and both Leon and Ruth excel at landscapes and favour oils as their medium, but the distinctive personalities of father and daughter shine out in their work.

Leon, who is largely self-taught, creates highly-coloured canvases, painted on location in a single session, and often alive with motion, while Ruth, who trained at the Norwich School of Art and Design, takes a more reflective and structured approach, working in the studio from photographs; she captures a specific, remembered moment, combining stillness with dramatic use of strong lines and vibrant pigments.

“Each of them admires what the other one does. They obviously take an informed view, but they don’t believe in attempting to exert influence on each other, or to critique each other’s work.

But I’m sure that visitors to the exhibition will find plenty to stimulate discussion.”

A bumper year for Cromer Carnival

This year’s Cromer Carnival has been hailed as one of the most successful for many years with bumper crowds taking part in over 120 events across the three week event which this year celebrated its 45th year.

On the opening day of the Carnival over 100 carbooters set up on the Carnival field alongside a Craft Fair, Antiques Valuation and the start of the Mini Beer Festival which saw 15 ales and ciders on tap in the Carnival marquee.

Sunday saw the Crowning of Miss Cromer, Hayley Massingham by Seaside Special favourites Paul Eastwood and Adam Daye in front of a crowded Pier Forecourt. The Carnival Royal Family arrived in three steam powered vintage cars and were entertained, along with the crowds, by The Castaways before a host of comedy from Seaside Special duo.

Up at the arena, thousands of people enjoyed a day of sunshine and enjoyed numerous events including the Dog Show and the Carnival Gymkhana with over 350 cars, motorbikes, vans and lorries turning out for the Cromer Custom & American Car Show and Motorbike & Trike Show.

Later on Sunday competitors turned out in their hundreds to take part in the Bonny Baby Competition, Knobbly Knees Contest, Glamorous Grandmother Competition and

After rounds of judging over 70 entrants the winners of the Bonny Baby Contest were announced as Ronnie Chatten from Cromer and Macie Garwood from Cromer in the 0-6 month category, Louis Wade from Cromer and Evie Eris from Rochester in the 7-12 month category and Henry Gill from Sheringham and Kyla Ward from Corby in the 13-18 months category.

The overall winner of the Tom Bolton Memorial Plate was Kyla Ward.

Later that afternoon Bob Thiess from Cromer beat off strong competition to win the Knobbly Knees Contest with Nathan Risbey from Cromer as runner-up. The Glamorous Grandmother Competition was won by Pamela Copeman from Cromer with Jane Arnold- High from Upper Sheringham runner up for the third year running.

In yet another packed competition scores of entrants took part in the Children’s Fancy Dress Parade across five age categories. The Overall Winner of the Robin Seeley Memorial Cup was Charlie Reeder aged 8 from Norwich, dressed as Cromer Pier.

On Monday there was fierce competition in the Best Dressed Waiters and Waitresses Competition and Race in front of hundreds of people who lined the Meadow after the competition had to be relocated from a blustery promenade. Tuesday saw the Carnival Family Fun Day at the Carnival field with hundreds of visitors enjoying displays in the arena after a drizzly start to the day. Highlights included the Wildcat Aerobatic Display Team, The Joseph Pearce Fire Stunt Show and the Newfoundland Working Dog Display Team as well as numerous events in the marquee and around the arena.

Across the week every evening saw a host of events playing to hundreds of people including Family Night, Wrestling Night, Wine Tasting Evening, Carnival Quiz Evening, Race Night and Carnival Bingo.

Carnival Day proved one of the most popular yet with crowds flocking onto the carnival field to take part in the festivities and watch some of

the way round town.

Overall winner was a pirate ship and its crew from Cromer Parish Church. Other entries included Noah’s Ark complete with costumed animals, a sumptuous seaside themed entry

Organisers praised the efforts of people taking part in the parade and the high level that the floats and entries had been made to which helped create a real party atmosphere in the town.

On Thursday the day got off to a leisurely start with the Party on the Lawns where families were entertained by Punch and Judy, Razz the Clown and Trix ‘n’ Stix Drum Group.

Later that evening the Carnival was rounded off by the ever-popular Carnival Fancy Dress Dance in the Carnival marquee to the sounds of Drop The Clutch. The sold out event saw 900 people in the marquee with the usual array of unique, topical and entertaining fancy dress.

Chairman Tony Shipp said “it has been a fabulous week, the sun has shone on the carnival and people have turned out in their thousands to enjoy the carnival and take part in all the events that have been planned by the Carnival team”.
