Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

At the end of December Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were reunited with Quila, the dog they rescued off Sea Palling on 22 December.

Mike and Caroline Jenner brought Quila and her daughter Summi to meet the crew who had pulled Quila from the reefs off Sea Palling. Jake Munday, Will Baker and Sean Ferguson had been out on their morning exercise just before Christmas when they were made aware of the lost dog, last seen drifting out to sea off Sea Palling.

Their second meeting was a much more pleasant meeting! Quila was pleased to meet up with the crew again. Mike and Caroline, the dog’s owners, were so grateful to the crew for their hard work. After the meeting they all went back to the crew room where they were able to watch the whole rescue on video, with the crew giving them the full story. Then Quila presented a donation to Will Baker on behalf of the RNLI.

Churches Together Christmas Lunch 2013

Christmas can be a lonely time for many people, but thanks to local organisations and businesses, the true meaning of Christmas was not forgotten in North Walsham.

Once again this year a band of hard working volunteers from Churches Together in the town gave up time on Christmas Day to provide lunch to people who would otherwise have been on their own on this special day.

For a wonderful selection of beautifully handcrafted Gifts and Cards Unusual & often unique

The sky was clear and the temperature quite chilly, as we welcomed some 90 guests into the warmth of the Community Centre, ‘with a glass of sherry, a smile and an invitation into the dining room to enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch’ said one volunteer.

We were delighted that Jacqueline Belson, Mayor of North Walsham, was able to be with us, taking time off from her own family Christmas lunch to greet everyone. After Grace from Father David Bagtaff, the cooks and helpers sprang into action, like a well oiled machine, to serve a delicious turkey meal, accompanied by a glass of wine, to all present. Unsurprisingly everyone was soon in good spirits, and the sound of people talking and pulling crackers filled the room.

Free Gift Wrapping Service

Come along, feel free to browse or visit our website www.papillongifts.co.uk You will find us at:26 Market Place, North Walsham, Norfolk NR28 9BS Tel: (01692) 405280

After lunch everyone received a box of Waitrose biscuits, and enjoyed Christmas cake with a cup of tea, followed by the Queen’s speech.

All too soon it was time to depart as carriages arrived – well, the community bus and volunteers’ private cars – to convey the guests safely home.

K C evin

We should like to thank The Blue Bell Inn, North Walsham Lions and Waitrose for their generous donations, The Beechwood Hotel for donating Christmas Crackers and After Eight Mints, North Norfolk Laundry for the table linen and linen napkins, North Norfolk Community Transport who transported our guests, North Walsham Community Centre who let us use their facilities for free and of course all members of the team - unsung helpers one and all – who prepared and served the meal and contributed to a memorable, festive and community Christmas for those present.

Dear Margaret,

I would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who was involved with the organisation of the Christmas Day lunch at the North Walsham Community centre for the people of North Walsham who would have otherwise been on their own on that very special occasion.

A marvellous day was had by all - from the moment we walked through the door, the service was 5 star. We had a wonderful traditional lunch, followed by a raffle where almost everyone had a prize. We listened attentively to the Queen`s Speech and in addition to that everyone went home with a Christmas present which was beautifully wrapped.

I am extremely grateful to all those who made our Christmas Day 2013 exceptional - this includes Roger and Pauline Vincent, JohnWatts, the Churches of North Walsham, Waitrose, The Beechwood Hotel, The Lions Club and anyone else that I have unintentionally forgotten to mention.

On behalf of everyone, I wish them all a happy, prosperous New Year 2014. Yours sincerely, Christine M

The past year has been as varied as usual but this time, unlike 2012, we had a long run of fine weather from July onwards and very little in the way of cold weather in the last three months of the year.

Fully insu red, regu lar or one-off clea ns

The first six months were generally cold/cool but with an above average content of high pressure especially to the north, rainfall was below average . Of note was the persistence of a north or north-east wind off the cold North Sea . As we enter 2014 expect a continuation of what we have been having in December as the Atlantic still has plenty of energy in this year. Towards the middle of January we start to see overall pressure rising giving rise to more stability in the atmosphere so subsequently there will be more chance of some less volatile weather.

To sum up for February and March it looks like temperatures will average out a little below average and under high pressure conditions there will be some decidedly cold overnight temperatures in March. Only towards the end of March will there be any fine, warm weather and this is likely to be short lived. Ned Nimbus

Is your Tattoo stopping you from moving forward in life? Would you like to have it removed in a painless, scar less way with the latest technology?

Look no further - the answer is right here…

In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos. It is estimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them removed within 10 years of their application. Tattoos can have negative associations and can be a hindrance in obtaining certain jobs. Whatever the reason, the best technology for tattoo removal in now available.

Coltishall Clinic is very pleased to announce the arrival of a new state-of-the-art q-switched ruby laser from polaris medical. It is a heavy machine weighting at 125 lbs and taller than most of us with its articulated laser arm. It is very expensive too but we believe in offering only the best. And when it comes to laser tattoo removal-shortcuts are simply not worth it!

The market has been flooded with cheap poorly tested laser devices in recent years. We have seen more injuries, inadequate treatments and even keloid scars after tattoo removals attempted by non-medical establishments recently.

There are also a number of non-laser tattoo removal options available today and a lot of these are dangerous. It does not make sense to inject strong alkaline solutions into tattoo ink. It might remove some ink but it would certainly remove normal tissues with risk of scarring.

Q switched ruby laser is renowned for its ability to remove green as well as dark inks. It is also used for removing unwanted skin pigment. With our q-switched Nd-Yag laser and the ruby laser, we now have a full range of advanced lasers to offer the very best in Laser tattoo removal.

Rotary praises local generosity for flood appeal

A BIG "Thank You" to the people of North Walsham for supporting our collection for a very local cause - the Walcott Flood Relief Fund - and giving so generously. The collection, in the Market Place on Thursday 12 December, raised ÂŁ900 with a further personal donation of ÂŁ500. Brilliant!

Stories from the day ‌‌

• one lady, dropping a £10 note into the collecting bucket, said she was a victim of the 1953 flood at Bacton and was pleased to support. • another offered shelter to victims over Christmas

• one Rotarian said “It was a privilege to stand in the Market Place, even in the perishing cold, collecting for such a good cause.â€?

It all proves what a great community spirit is alive and well in North Walsham. Thank you.

Rotary praises response to Philippines Appeal Members of the Rotary Club of North Walsham would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the local people for their generous donations to our Philippine Disaster Appeal collections in the town last month. “The response was tremendous says President Dennis Simpson, “showing the caring

nature of our local community.

A total of almost ÂŁ1200 was collected and this will be used with other club funds to purchase two ‘Shelter Boxes’ providing emergency housing and vital equipment. Each ‘Shelter Box’ contains a dry weatherproof shelter, warm beds, water purification equipment, cooking aids and utensils, a practical toolkit and a children’s pack for ten people for six months.

We have also purchased five ‘Water Survival Boxes’. Each box, with a capacity of 54 litres, contains a water purification kit capable of produce sufficient treated water for a family of four for about four months. There is also a pictogram showing how the box works, with text in a number of languages including English and Spanish. he box also contains a set of essential survival items including utensils for eating and drinking; health and hygiene; basic shelter and simple tools; and other household equipment.

Both types of box are flown direct to the Philippines from the UK by Rotary International.

By mid November Rotary Clubs across Great Britain and Ireland had raised over £300,000 towards this appeal – and the work continues. We are proud to assure readers that when donating to your local Rotary Club 100% of your hard earned gift goes to the chosen charity and as a world-wide service

organisation we have Rotarians there on the ground in the Philippines.

Scouts is all about fun, challenges and adventure

We are the UK's biggest mixed youth organisation. We change lives by offering 6- to 25-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.

Scouts helps children and young adults reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.

Scouts (10½–14) Each Scout Troop consists of small units of six to eight Scouts called a Patrol, usually led by a Patrol Leader. Outdoor activities feature prominently, with the highlight being camping. Throughout the year, Scouts learn various skills, such as map reading, camp cooking and first aid in preparation for camp. Rock climbing, potholing, gliding, photography and international experiences are just some of the things they get up to.

Tuesday Scouts - 7pm - 9pm Thursday Scouts - 7pm - 9pm For more information, contact membership@northwalshamscouts.org.uk

Resolve to be a lifesaver in 2014 Readers are being asked to make 2014 the year that they start saving lives by giving blood. With the festive season at an end, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is hoping people in Anglia will pledge to become regular blood donors for their New Year’s resolution. The New Year period is often a particularly challenging time for blood stocks due to the wintry weather and dark nights keeping people indoors. And as hospitals need 7,000 units of blood each day to treat patients with chronic conditions like cancer and anaemia, along with people needing treatment for often life-threatening illnesses and injuries, NHSBT is encouraging new or returning donors to book an appointment in the first weeks of 2014. Derek Carr NHSBT’s lead donor relations manager for the Anglia area, said “People often set themselves very difficult and drastic challenges for their New Year’s resolutions which they struggle to complete. “However, we are asking people to do something very simple which should only take around an hour of their time, a few times a year. Making and keeping a New Year’s resolution to give blood will give you the satisfaction of knowing you are saving lives. “We can also guarantee you a warm welcome, a hot cup of tea and a biscuit to stave off the cold January weather.” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

The Singing Beauty Treatment!

It’s a couple of weeks since those New Year resolutions …. Did more than the goose get a little bit fat? Did you, like me, make a New Year resolution to be healthier, be fitter? And are you still keeping it? Well, if going to the gym or striding round North Norfolk in the dark evenings for that after work, work out is not for you, how about singing?

Did you know that exercising those vocal chords is actually an aerobic exercise that benefits the heart and circulation, decreases muscle tension and, because it exercises our lungs, tones up the body? And… singing has been found to improve sleep, tone facial muscles and improve posture…. “What?” I hear you say, “Singing could make me more beautiful!”

Well, yes! And there’s more. The latest research shows singing in a choir causes a calming effect that is as beneficial to your health as yoga. It can help reduce anger, depression and anxiety and has been shown to improve balance issues caused by illness. Then there are the social and emotional benefits. Singing enhances mood, increases positive feelings and is without doubt spiritually uplifting. It certainly brings people together and encourages a

and always welcome new members. You may have heard us sing the “Hallelujah” chorus or the magnificent coronation anthem, “Zadok the Priest”. Some of our members don’t read music and some haven’t sung since school, whilst others are accomplished singers with a wealth of experience. So if you want the benefits (and beauty treatment) of singing, do come to a rehearsal - Thursdays at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church, NR11 8NR.

Still not convinced? Well perhaps the more formal, scientific explanation will persuade you. I quote Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education, University of London, who has studied the medical aspects of singing for 30 years “Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activMore information from ity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream DavidBallard@hotmail.co.uk / 07785 782 498. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although the message on the answer phone says that we are closed over the Christmas period there are still some messages left, which Stephanie does listen to. A call from a gentleman regarding a “stray pregnant cat” on a car park obviously needed a return call to assess the situation. After speaking to the gentleman Stephanie contacted one of our volunteers who kindly agreed to go and pick up the cat so that she was safe should the birth of the kittens be imminent. This was not just a two minute visit down the road but involved a round trip of about 20 miles.

On reaching the car park our volunteer found the cat sitting next to a plate with a cat basket close by. She secured the cat and put her in her car. On going back to the place where she found the cat she was approached by someone who asked if she had just taken the cat. On confirming she had and the reasons why, the person, who lived near the car park, stated it was her cat (apparently the dish and basket are there for another cat). She became very aggressive to our volunteer, stating that the cat was not pregnant, we should have put up posters, checked

with the vets and knocked on all the doors nearby to find out whose cat it was. Can you imagine the response our volunteer would have received if she had done this, particularly as it happened to be Boxing Day? Bearing in mind we were under the impression the cat was pregnant (she did have Poppy - lovely young cat handed into care one of those low as a stray last year undercarriages neutered cats often have), our main aim was to ensure the cat was safe in case she needed veterinary care. Contacting vets to let them know the cat was in our care would have been a priority once they had opened after the holiday but not possible while cover was being offered by another practice, not in the immediate vicinity. Most people would be relieved to learn that their cat’s welfare had been considered to be important but, sadly, not in this instance. From our point of view it was a blessing not to start the New Year with a pregnant cat and to thank our volunteer to coming to the rescue and responding to a request for help.

Microchipping your

Dog

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham

Last year the Government announced it will become law for all dogs to be permanently identified by a ‘micro-chip’ by 2016. These ‘chips’ are the size of a grain of rice and placed into the scruff of the animal’s neck between the shoulder blades. It is a simple, painless procedure which can be carried out without the need for anaesthetic or sedation. There is no age limit for microchipping and it can be carried out on dogs, cats, tortoises and rabbits. Miramar vets is supporting the Government’s decision to make microchipping compulsory by offering the microchips at the reduced price of £15.00 for the whole of February. (usual price is £25) If you would like your pet microchipped please ring us to book an appointmen and bring the coupon with you.

Imagine

I close my eyes and imagine It’s the first day of Spring, Outside snowflakes are falling But the birds still sweetly sing.

I close my eyes and imagine It’s summer time again, And I can smell the scent of roses After the rain. I close my eyes and imagine Autumn has arrived once more, And golden leaves are swirling Past my cottage door. I sit in my armchair Before a glowing fire, I don’t need to imagine As I have all that I desire.

The prospect of a brand New Year And the good things it may bring, Peace between all nations With the bright flowers of Spring.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER MAKE YOUR GARDEN GROW maintains his belief that we live in ‘the best of all possible worlds’, even as he travels around the world being conned and abused by almost everyone he meets. The wonderful score ends with the song ‘Make our Garden Grow’ which is so stirring that it should inspire us all to get outside into our gardens as soon as the weather allows.

All the gardening organisations and seed companies are sending out advice and details of their new introductions at this time of year and here are some of the suggestions I have seen:

The hero Candide is young and naive but

This seed company has introduced new flowers and vegetable seed including Tomato ‘Firecracker’, a compact, naturally trailing variety for pots, basket or patio which throughout the season promises 60-80 fruits, each weighing around 30-35 g. They are also promoting a new plant Didiscus ‘Madonna’ which has lace-like flowers. It is a border plant producing domed clusters of tiny flowers. It can also be grown in a cold greenhouse or conservatory.

With the dramatically increasing price of potatoes in the shops Marshalls are encouraging people to grow their own and reminding us all to get in our orders for seed potatoes while all the different varieties are available. To go with the new potatoes Marshalls are selling Brundell’s Mint, which comes from a specialist grower outside Norwich.

They also have an Extra Early Brassica Collection which promises early delivery of the plants which allows harvesting as early as May/June.

ROyAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETy

The RHS suggests that in January we should do the following jobs

Help the Hungry - Putting out food over the winter is a great way to support the wildlife in your garden especially the birds.

Apple and Pear tree pruning – To ensure good crops of fruit it is best to carry out pruning of apples and pears in the winter. The overall aim is to remove dead, old and less productive wood and to reduce congestion.

Plants for winter cheer – Even in the depths of winter it is possible to have plants in bloom in the garden some of which are highly scented. A visit to the winter planting at the Cambridge Botanic Gardens is highly recommended.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETIES

Why not start the New Year by joining your local Garden Club or Horticultural Society and taking part in all the activities they arrange? I must finally return to Voltaire, ‘that is very well said’, replied Candide, ’but we must cultivate our garden’. The photograph is of the famous Borough Market in Southwark at Christmas that shows what we can produce if we cultivate our gardens and allotments. Bob Wilkinson

ROLLS ROYCE SPIRIT

Charlie’s home cured Gravadlax.... with home-made Norfolk horseradish Since I’ve been in Cromer I’ve one of the many highlights has been becoming involved with the RNLI, training to be part of the crew. The do such a great job all year round and they are a great bunch of boys. It’s not until you get the RNLI bug completely under your skin that you realise the commitment, bravery and selflessness that they all have, and it’s been a privilege to spend time with them. The boss is, however, slightly concerned that the alarm will go at seven thirty on a Saturday night when my hands are full of steak, but I’ve assured him that Icarus’ steak always takes priority!

This recipe has been a firm favourite on our a la carte menu for a while now, and if you’ve ever wanted to know how to cure salmon – now’s your chance.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Grove this winter – we are open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, plus of course the best Sunday Lunch in Norfolk! Best wishes, Charlie you will need to purchase half side of salmon, scaled and pin boned (any fishmonger will do this for you).

► Place the salmon on a piece of parchment big enough to be able to fold over the fish.

► In a food processor, blend 5-7 good size sprigs of dill

► Add crushed black peppercorns, a handful of pink peppercorns, half a squeezed lemon,

a good squeeze of Norfolk honey (if possible from hives that have been located near rape seed, as the honey tastes scrummy, and just a bit more fragrant).

► Blend all the above ingredients until a fine paste, like a pesto-type consistency, and put aside.

► Sprinkle a good handful of Maldon Sea onto the fish with the dill paste and spoon spread across the top of the salmon until even, as you need to have a consistent flavour through the whole of the flesh.

► Fold over the parchment, and then wrap gently with cling film length and width-wise until fully sealed.

► Leave in fridge for 10 days… (no longer!)

► When cured take your salmon from the fridge, unwrap and slice very finely using a carving (or if you have a long fish) knife.

► For the simple Horseradish crème fraîche, grate one whole horseradish (can be purchased from a good farm shop although you might need to order in advance), being careful not to grate too far into the core as it becomes very hard and stringy.

► Add to the horseradish one teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a pinch of salt and pepper and a touch of castor sugar.

► Finally squeeze your other half of lemon (or probably a fresh lemon, given that the last half was used ten days before!) into the mix.

Simply serve your salmon with your fresh Horseradish sauce and toasted sourdough bread.

► Mix all together with a good couple of large table spoons of crème fraîche and an equal amount of sour cream.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

We at North Walsham in Bloom would like to thank all our sponsors large and small for the wonderful support we have received during the last twelve months. Without this continued effort from you all – and we know as well as anyone how tight money is at the moment – North Walsham town centre would be a very drab place. All our fund raising efforts have been very well supported and even when we are working in the town people come up and give us what they can afford from their pockets. We do try and keep our costs to a minimum but some things, for example watering and insurance, as well as obvious other costs still have to be met.

On 21 January we will be having a large working party on the corner of the bypass and Norwich Road to try and prevent the soil being washed away from our large flower bed in the next heavy rain like the one we had a few weeks ago. Even in the winter there are things to be done. The hanging baskets all have to be scrubbed out and have the wicks checked, and any wooden tubs – of which we now do not have many – have to be treated with wood preservative. You will I am sure, see us in our high vis jackets - brilliant for keeping out the wind – round and about the place getting things ready for the big plant in June. We all wish every one of you a Very Happy New Year and we will continue to try to make North Walsham a more pleasant place to live. North Walsham Times 438 January 18th 2014

Ho Ho Ho from St. Nick’s!

It was an action-packed few weeks for the children of St. Nicholas House School in North Walsham in the run-up to Christmas. Forms 2 and 3 enjoyed a trip to The Playhouse in Norwich to see ‘The Snail & the Whale’ whilst Form 5 also went to The Playhouse to watch the dress rehearsal of ‘The Sound of Music’. Form 4 chose the more energetic option of a winter walk at Sheringham Park whilst Form 2 spent a happy morning learning how the Victorians celebrated Christmas at Cromer Museum. Back in North Walsham the children in Form 1 and Little Nick’s Nursery spent a busy morning in Sainsbury’s finding out all about the store, listening to a special story, trying new fruits and vegetables and learning how to use the checkout!

The Christmas plays were performed with great enthusiasm to friends and family; this year KS2 re-enacted the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves whilst KS1 treated the audience to a rendition of The Bossy Christmas Fairy. In addition to Christmas parties and a delicious Christmas lunch, the whole school gathered together for a special assembly, led by Mrs Watts of St Nicholas Church, to learn the story of the school’s namesake, St. Nicholas. Carol singing by the school choir to shoppers in Waitrose rounded off a very busy, but enjoyable term.

Aga & Waitrose Cooking Demonstration

Norfolk AGA owners couldn't get enough of the sumptuous three course Waitrose Christmas menu, wonderfully cooked and prepared by Mandy Gooden the Chef from AGA.

The invitation only event which was supported by Waitrose North Walsham showcased ASM Customer Service Andy the traditional and Purser pulling cracker with unique cooking Mary Bopst AGA Branch techniques of an Manager AGA. The aromas of Xmas turkey parcels with a goats cheese quiche, caramelised Clementine's and chocolate brownies soon filled the air and the invited diners were soon tucking into their delicious meal.

In between courses, diners were encouraged to mingle and help themselves to Xmas recipe cards as well as viewing some of Heston Blumenthal’s goodies which were on show.

A raffle also took place with AGA products up for grabs with the money being donated into Waitrose North Walshams Community Matters causes.

Christmas Countdown Challenge

The pupils of Millfield Primary School in North Walsham started the season off with festive cheer on Wednesday 27 November, as they launched into a day of Christmas themed activities.

Every year Millfield has a Christmas House Challenge day - this involves all the children separating into four different themed houses within the school and working together. The houses consisted of different ages and abilities with every child taking part. Their aim was to raise the most money in their house. The activities included creating festive games for the school Christmas Fayre, making and selling biscuits and cakes, making crackers, tea tree lights, Christmas lanterns and felt Christmas trees.

In every class Christmas music played as children chatted and helped one another with each task, some teaching others new skills.

Millfield is always looking for ways to enrich the children’s learning and the challenge days are another way for the children to learn new skills, passing on skills to others and practising their social skills by working as part of a team.

Should I have a Survey done? Written by Richard Hewitt – Partner at Hayes + Storr

You have found that perfect property to buy, and your offer has been accepted. You have been round the house a few times and everything looks lovely and the coffee smelt wonderful!

So, do you need to spend all that money on a survey? Well, it depends. If you are borrowing money from a bank or building society, a valuation survey will be required, and your mortgage offer letter should explain the cost.

If it is only your money you are using to buy the property you do not have to have a survey done; it is your important decision. Some reasons to consider are set out later, but first, what are the different types of surveys?

There are four main types and they increase in cost from £150 or so, upto and beyond £1,000.

MORTGAGE VALUATIOn

This is just the lender checking that the value of the property is sufficient to cover its loan to you. It does not offer you, as a buyer, any protection.

A HOME COnDITIOn REPORT

The report will provide you with clear “traffic light” ratings indicating the condition of different parts of the building, services, garage and outbuildings drawing attention to obvious defects that require attention. This survey will not go into a great amount of detail nor will it give you a valuation of the property. These are often used if you are purchasing a modern property in apparent good condition.

A HOME BUyER REPORT

The report includes all of the features in the Home Condition Report as well as a more extensive inspection, a valuation of the property by the surveyor, an insurance reinstatement figure for the property, a list of defects or potential defects that could affect the value of the property, advice on repairs

and maintenance, a list of issues that require investigation so as to avoid future problems and defects and identification of any legal issues that require addressing and information on the location and local environment. These are often used if you are purchasing a standard older or modern property that appears in reasonable condition.

A DETAILED BUILDInG SURVEy

Also known as a ‘structural survey’. This report includes a thorough inspection and a detailed report, a description of visible defects and potential issues, the repair options available and the implications of taking no remedial action. These are often used if you are purchasing a larger, or older/run down, altered or unusual property or if you are intending to carry out major works to the property

Shall I have a survey?

• The purchase of a house is, for most of us, the single biggest financial commitment we will ever make.

• Failure to have a survey may leave you with having to spend thousands that you had not budgeted for, and to problems selling on in due course .

Our advice is simply to make sure you learn everything you can about the property you are buying, and that should include getting a survey.

Which Surveyor?

Look for a surveyor with Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) membership who is used to surveying properties in this area. Any surveyor should give his or her professional view up front as to the most appropriate survey for the property you are interested in.

If you require advice on this or any other legal matter please contact the team at our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

A Christmas Cracker

Members of Animal Magic Dog Club who attended the dogs’ Christmas party raised a festive £550 in aid of the Cinnamon Trust and Faith rescue centre. Santa, pictured here with Georgie, took time out from his busy day job at Sam’s Pets to deliver presents to all of the dogs attending.

Tea Dances Donation to EACH

The Tea Dance held in December with the Den-Barrie Duo raised £130 so with a very generous donation given to Denis and Barrie by the Good Companions for entertaining their members, we were able to send a donation of £180 to EACH Quidenham.

The next tea dance is on 27 January at the Community Centre 2pm – 4.30pm (admission £2 proceeds to charity).

2013 Poppy Appeal Thanks

From all at Animal Magic we wish you a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing customers old and new when classes resume in January.

Animal Magic Dog Club based in North Walsham & Norwich offers a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs.

For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Thorpe Market Church

The Craft Fair event held on 16/17 November raised £293.08 for church funds. The Tastes, Smells & Sights of The Holy Land presentation on 23 November given by Janet Balfour raised £70 for the benefit of the children of Bethlehem. Thank you to all who attended.

On behalf of the North Walsham branch of the Royal British Legion, may I please make use of your pages to thank the residents of and visitors to North Walsham and the adjoining villages for their amazing generosity during this year’s Poppy Appeal.

To date we have raised £11579.10 with some further contributions still expected.

Whilst special thanks go to Sainsburys and Waitrose for hosting our collection teams and to all those who braved the cold to boost the amounts collected there, this superb total could not have been achieved without the help of the many other businesses and individuals who hosted or carried Poppy Tins throughout the area.

Most of all though thank you to the wonderfully generous people of the North Walsham Area who donated over £2000 more than last years and helped ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises.

David Audley, North Walsham Poppy Appeal Organiser

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis Backhanders Battle Back to Stun NWSCA

In the first division of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, John Vaughan and John Batchford at Cromer Tennis Club. Beane beat Wilson in straight and Vaughan won a close battle in four against De Neve. A contest featuring some exceptional play and strokes saw Warner edge out Batchford 14-12 in the fourth, but with Beane’s scintillating attack beating De Neve in straight the defending League champions led 3-1. The momentum then began to shift as Wilson defeated Batchford 8-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-7 and Warner beat Vaughan in straight before De Neve battled hard to pick up a terrific win against Batchford 10-12, 12-10, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9.

Warner’s backhand control with depth ensured his straight sets win against Beane and then the fourth set proved pivotal in the next battle as Wilson tidied up his game from a two sets deficit against Vaughan – the Backhander came

through to win 7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 15-13, 11-8 and the fifth win in a row for the hosts also assured them of victory in the overall match.

Beane and Batchford won the doubles in four against Wilson and De Neve, but it was Backhanders who won the match 6-4. Tough times continued in the League for the defending champions when they met Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Ian Darricott as although there were wins for Beane and Batchford against Darricott, it was Gresham’s who won 8-2 and are now twenty-eight points clear at the top of the League table.

NWSCA also played Gresham’s in the semifinal of the Knockout Singles Cup; exactly a week after beating the School in the deciding set of the deciding match of the Doubles Cup semi, but this time it was Gresham’s who came through 8-2.

In the second division, NWSCE’s James Lester, Tom Wardle and Andrew Weston won

Pianists in all areas of norfolk to play a new song for Road Safety Workshops in schools and community groups. Please telephone 01263 512076 or email pepperjane@btinternet.com

Wardle won from two sets down against Dyde while the Lighthouse player also took the second set 18-16 from maximum man Lester, before losing in four. Bending picked up a brace edging out Wardle 12-10 in the fifth and defeating Weston 8-11, 14-12, 17-15, 11-9.

Another match for NWSCE saw them lose 8-2 to Gresham’s School B, while a two-man NWSCC duo lost out to Gresham’s 6-4 with a Phil Mole maximum lessening the impact of their player shortage. Finally back in the first division, a derby match saw NWSCB beat NWSCD 7-3.
