NWP Promotions Successful Show

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Last month saw NWP Promotions’ latest event take to the stage, once again all in the name of charity.

It saw Norfolk multi-instrumentalist Rachel King joining local singer and Buble tribute artist Dale Bullimore and magician illusionist Luke Cook to take part in the show.

This was the fifth year that they had organised an event like this at North Walsham Community Centre. Event organiser Colin Jeary said 'The idea of the events was to bring great talent to North Walsham and keep live theatre going. The acts tonight were superb especially Luke who has performed in Cromer's Seaside Special show and at Thursford. During Luke's act everybody was just so amazed at what they were watching.'

Colin has now got his thinking cap on to see who could perform in next year’s show. He said 'The Community Centre is such a good place to hold these sort of functions, as it has a good seating capacity and good facilities with car parking just outside the door'.

The show was raising money for The East Anglian Air Ambulance and, after all the running costs of the show had been paid, a profit of £150 was left for the charity. Colin said ' I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the support from local businesses including Emmajins cupcakes, Sally-Ann Taylor, Andrea's Photography, Jay's Fleurs, The Shoe Shop, Aroma, The Three Cottages, Tangles Hair, SR Print and www.train-tech.com. Also the technical crew of the North Walsham Players who ran the sound and lighting for the show, all the front of house persons and everybody who came and supported the show'.

North Walsham Players’ next show will be a Variety Show on Friday 15 November which will feature songs from the musicals, sketches and dance. Money raised from the event will be going to the group’s chosen charity which for this year is East Coast Truckers. The show is being staged once again at the Community Centre at 7.30pm and tickets will be available on the door priced at adults £4 and children £2.

Waitrose launches drive to tackle isolation at Christmas

Waitrose has launched a major new initiative to help support elderly, homeless and vulnerable people in the community this Christmas.

Waitrose will help provide Christmas lunch events for people who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day. Waitrose is asking organisers of local Christmas dinner events to get in touch with their local Waitrose shop, where they can apply for support from the retailer. The deadline for requests is 15 November 2013.

With more than three quarters of a million Brits over 65 saying they always or often feel lonely the support is aimed at cutting these numbers at what for many others is the most sociable time of the year.

The drive will see: • Every Waitrose shop supporting community Christmas lunch events – offering food, money and other resources • Hundreds of Waitrose volunteering hours being offered for Waitrose Partners to help plan events (while being fully paid by Waitrose) • Waitrose asking its customers to think of people in their community who might be lonely this Christmas and make small actions that might make a big difference .

Each of the retailer’s 300 shops has an allocation of money and volunteering time to put towards community Christmas dinner events.

Waitrose is asking groups to apply for this support from their local branch if they are already organising – or thinking of organising - such a lunch.

Says Waitrose Community Manager Tina Varns ‘Through our Community Matters initiative (green tokens) our shops have been able to support such incredible work going on in communities across the country over the last five years - and we've learned first-hand how vital this kind of support is at providing lifelines to vulnerable people. This new Isolation Campaign will complement the great work our shops are already doing in their local communities - and we're excited about the difference it will make to so many people’.

Museum for North Walsham?

At least 40 years have passed since serious attempts started to set up a museum in North Walsham to house items relating to the history of life and work both in the town and in the surrounding district. Failure to find premises meant no progress was made. Highly suitable premises, in a prominent position, are now available. Early indications are that funding could be found for set-up costs. The group of volunteers involved in the project are looking for assurance that local people will offer enthusiastic support both by offering items for display, either on loan or by donation, and by providing time, and financial support, including sponsorship, in the longer term for the on-going costs once the museum is up and running.

The Griffon Area Partnership is co-ordinating the current investigations which are being encouraged by all who are keen to develop inland tourism and to increase economic activity in North Walsham, which would be the result if increased numbers of visitors arrived knowing that there was plenty to do in the town. It could only help the existing attractions such as the Cat Pottery, the Motor-bike Museum, the amazing parish church (the second largest in Norfolk and a wool church) and, of course, the Davenport Magic Kingdom Museum. Eating places, the stockers of mementoes, all would benefit.

Information Day for those living with and beyond cancer The Big C Centre, Norwich, opens its doors to offer help and support to anyone living with and beyond cancer

A special cancer Information Day is being held at Norwich’s Big C Centre on Saturday 9 November 10.30am – 3.30pm.

Charities from the region, Big C and hospital professionals are coming together under one roof to inform cancer patients and their families and friends of all the help available to them in our region. This will include advice on work and cancer, talking to children, money matters, healthy eating, travel insurance, body image, psychosexual issues, keeping active and more. There will also be samples of sweet and savoury tasters for people to try.

A similar event was held in May this year, and saw people affected by cancer walking away armed with information and advice that could help them through their own particular cancer journey. One visitor, who had recently become a carer for their loved one, said, ‘As a carer, I now have a better understanding of how cancer affects you. I found it useful and am very grateful for the information’.

As part of the market-place style plan for the day there will be stands with information on local and national cancer support groups, stands from British Red Cross, Age UK and Crossroads, plus many specialists on hand for help and advice. Taster sessions of hand massage will be available on the day.

The hospital and Big C will also have their specialists available, such as a Welfare Advisor, nutritional experts and Health Care Professionals, as well as the friendly staff of the Centre itself. Carers of cancer patients are an important group and the day will include information on support for carers, including our Carer’s Club.

Jill Chapman, the Big C Centre Manager says ‘When someone is diagnosed with cancer the

whole family is affected. There is a lot of information, advice and support in our region but we need to make sure people have the opportunity to find out about it. The hospitals all do a fantastic job in supporting patients and as we know everyone’s situation is different, which is why we’re working with other charities and specialists to offer this day.

There will be something for everyone from diagnosis onwards, something to help people take back some control of their lives and to move on.’

Refreshments are on offer all day and the event is entirely free. This event will be held every six months. (Next year’s dates are May 10th 2014 and November 8th 2014).

This has been on the menu now for a while and is a firm favourite as it’s perfect for this nice windy Autumnal weather we’re enjoying! The boss was out on the ride-on mower on Saturday morning mulching up the leaves on the lawn, but of course by the time he’s finished the grass was thick with them again… I think he just enjoys riding around with Duran Duran in his headphones to be honest.

We’ve been extremely busy here at the Grove, with a two-week waiting list for most weekend evenings and full houses for Sunday lunch too.

1 small tin all butter brioche loaf 10 slices thick cut white bread ½ cup dark chocolate

Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding (Serves 4)

½ cup white chocolate ½ cup muscavado sugar 1 vanilla pod 1 pint thick double cream 4 large free-range eggs 125g unsalted butter (melted) A lot of love

For the ice cream: 2 full cups of full fat milk, 2/3 cup double cream 7 free range egg yolks ½ cup unrefined caster sugar 2 good pinches ground ginger Two good tablespoons of stem ginger, drained and diced.

■

Using either enamel or glass Pyrex dish, brush with melted butter ■ Slice the brioche loaf and cut into triangles ■ Whisk eggs with cream and the sugar with the rest of the melted butter ■ Slice your vanilla pod down the centre and scrap the seed with the back of the knife ■ Add to the cream and butter mix, whisk lightly.

■ Melt both chocolates in a glass Pyrex bowl over a simmering pan on a stove until chocolate is tepid.

■ Place the brioche and white bread alternatively in four layers in your Pyrex dish, with the melted chocolate drizzled off the whisk between each layer.

■ Once all the bread

and brioche are in the dish, add cream mix over the top. With latex gloves, pushing down so all your bread absorbs the mixture.

■ Drizzle remaining chocolate over the top ■ Bake in the oven on gas mark 4 / 5 (180) for fifteen to 30 mins depending on oven until golden brown.

This is a basic recipe for crème anglais, with the stem ginger of course.

■ Run a medium- sized saucepan under cold water ■ Pour in the cream and milk and bring to the boil ■ Whisk eggs, sugar and ground ginger while waiting for milk to heat ■ Once boiled pour over the egg mix ■ Whisk and return the eggy mix to the saucepan ■ Return the saucepan to medium heat and gently cook through the Anglais, stirring continuously – DO NOT RE-BOIL!!!

When mix coats the back of the spoon you know it’s done.

■ Put the saucepan into a bowl of ice water; once cool place in food mixer with butterfly whisk ■ Whisk in the diced stem ginger and place in a two litre ice-cream container, pop into the freezer ready to enjoy.

Cromer in World War II

Northrepps Film Society enjoyed a successful second show on 3 October with an audience of thirty for John Schlesinger’s Midnight Cowboy.

“We were delighted with the turnout,” said Andrew Gilling, chairman of the Society, “and are expecting even more on 7 November for Cromer in the Second World War, a film compiled by Peter Stibbons using a mixture of archive and modern footage.”

Mr. Stibbons will give a talk to introduce the film, starting at 7.30pm in Northrepps Village Hall, and will take questions afterwards. As usual doors open at 7pm with tea, coffee, wine and beer for sale and the admission charge is £4.50.

Looking ahead, on 5 December 5th the Society will show The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden’s charming account of a retirement adventure in India with a cast including Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.

Waitrose Norfolk Community Matters

To celebrate five years of the Waitrose Community Matters Initiative, the four Norfolk branches, North Walsham, Norwich, Swaffham and Wymondham, collaborated their Community Matters Initiative for one month.

Three selected nominations then go forward each month and customers are given a green token after each till transaction which they use to vote. The £1,000 donation is then shared pro rate the votes between the thee beneficiaries.

After initial suggestions and discussions from each of the branches, the final vote was decided and Norfolk Deaf Children’s Society, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind were selected as beneficiaries of this exceptional month.

Over the last five years since its introduction, the Waitrose Branches in Norfolk have together donated over £200,000 into organisations, good causes and charities which are working to benefit the Norfolk Community.

By collaborating this initiative for one month, the 4 branches together have £4,000 to donate and the customers vote has donated to East Anglian Air Ambulance £2,133, Norfolk Deaf Childrens, Society £912 and Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind £955.

The cheque presentations were made at Waitrose Norwich earlier this month with representatives from all three charities joining Waitrose Partners to receive their cheques and enjoy refreshments afterwards.

Each Waitrose Branch donates to the Community £1,000 of its profit every month through the Community Matters Initiative.

Customers are invited to nominate their favourite local good cause or charity to benefit by completing a form in any Waitrose Branch.

Charity Staff Open Lloyds Bank in North Walsham

Sheila Denny from The Benjamin Foundation recently had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the relaunched Lloyds Bank in North Walsham, marking another milestone in the Bank’s 250 year history.

Mark Moses, branch manager, invited the charity, its neighbour in the town, to open the branch. This continues the good relationship which has seen bank staff doing voluntary work for the charity this year.

Owl Assembly at St. Nicholas House School

On Monday 7 October St. Nicholas House School held a special Owl Assembly for all the children. Mrs. Dalzell from Happisburgh Owls brought in a Barn Owl, a Tawny Owl, a rare Asian Wood Owl and a Choka Owl called Mumbles who talked when spoken to! The children were fascinated by the owls, asked lots of questions and learned lots of interesting facts! At the end of the assembly every child who wanted to was allowed to hold the owl of their choice and have their photograph taken. It was lovely to see the looks of delight on the children’s faces and at break time several children were seen pretending to ‘fly’ around the playing field!

Charlotte, aged 6, writes “A barn owl is brown and white. When it flies it looks all white but it is not. If it flies in the day it means it has babies, so it needs to get food for them. If we don’t have rain barn owls can die because they can’t drink out of puddles so they drink out of ponds and water butts instead. They see their reflection and think it’s safe but they are not waterproof and can drown. They cough up pellets and in them are all the things they’ve eaten. If they don’t cough up pellets they can’t eat for all the day.”

St Nicholas House School Visits Waitrose

Form 5 from St. Nicholas House School visited Waitrose on 16 October for a ‘Healthy Eating’ workshop. The children had a lovely morning having a tour of the branch, looking at how the food is delivered and where it is stored. They were able to see where Waitrose.com and John Lewis Click and Collect orders were collated.

They spent a good deal of time looking at and talking about the different food groups, learning about the traffic light nutrition information on packaging and tasting more unusual fruit and vegetables. The children then put together two healthy meals and two less healthy meals, which they were able to taste and critic. We were all delighted that the healthiest meal solution was also children's favourite (although the pizza and oven chips less healthy option came out a close second!).

The children all left with a goody bag with lots of healthy eating information and hopefully full tummies!

St. Nick’s visit St. Paul’s!

On Tuesday 1 October, Forms 4 and 5 from St Nicholas House School travelled to London by train from North Walsham station to visit St. Paul’s Cathedral. After an early start to catch the 7.45am train, the children had fantastic day learning about the history of the Cathedral. They made mosaics to take home with them, whispered in the Whispering Gallery and climbed to the top of the Dome to take in the spectacular views, having great fun spotting the London landmarks! A great day was had by all although a few yawns were spotted on the return journey back to Norfolk!

Amazing Art Auction for Africa A charity art auction earlier this month raised over £4,000 (including gift aid) to help street children in Lusaka, Zambia.

painting ‘Barn Owl Hunting’ by renowned artist Maggi Hambling will be offered at Keys’ East Anglian Fine Art auction on 22 November.

Over 70,000 children live on the streets in Lusaka, mainly orphaned by the Aids pandemic. The auction was part of a series of events to raise funds for building materials for a volunteer’s house for the health professionals who work with these children. A group of local trades-people and volunteers will travel to Zambia in October 2014 to build the house, all funding their own expenses.

The evening, organised by Mundesley wonder-woman, Wendy Fredericks, featured cheese and wine tasting, art sale and live music by Ade Cockburn whilst potential purchasers viewed the lots on offer.

The auction, conducted by Roy Murphy of Keys Auctioneers, featured almost 100 lots of paintings, photographs and sculptures all generously donated by local artists. A fierce, but good humoured bidding war saw almost all the lots sold with highlights being an original installation by Harry Gunn realising £120, his father Jon Gunn’s ‘Curlews’ also realising £120 and a signed print by Ronald Durban realising £195. After the auction, organiser Wendy said ‘With over 100 pieces there are too many folks to thank

We were also treated to delicious homemade cheese by Greg Kaye at Groveland Roughton, Candi's lovely chutneys of Aylsham and Norfolk Cordials of Matlaske. With wine donated from Coors brewery we had a fantastic demonstration on how to appreciate wine from Kate Sweet.

A wonderful evening was had by all and thank you to the team of stars who helped us on the night.’

BEAUTIFUL TREE PLANTED IN PAT’S MEMORY

On Thursday 17 October some close friends of Pat Stott’s gathered at the Bluebell Pond in North Walsham to plant a Crab Apple tree in her memory. Pat died in April this year and is much missed by all her friends and the various organisations for which she worked.

The day was chosen as it would have been her 82nd birthday. The tree which was a Red Sentinel and in full fruit was planted by Pat’s brother who had travelled from Cardiff with his wife to do the honours.

Slow Food Festival From Breakfast to Dinner, from workshops to demonstrations to musical entertainment and markets, this year's Aylsham Food Festival, organised

by Slow Food Aylsham, had everything for those who enjoy their food with a light-hearted touch!

Taking full advantage of the impressive Mobile Cooking Academy, on loan from Festival sponsors AEG and temporarily sited at Blickling Hall, the weekend got off to a flying start with a series of workshops for groups of young children from local primary schools.

On hand to help were Justin Gardner, catering manager at the Hall, plus Liz Scott in the costume of Cath, her scullery maid alter ego. Liz returned the following day, together with two other Blickling Hall volunteers, Bunty Stotts - aka Flo the Cook and Malcolm Bird, 'The Butler' who staged a workshop for students from Aylsham High School.

The three were followed by local chefs Steve Thorpe, Festival Patron and Head of School at City College Norwich; freelance Derrol Waller; Mark Sayers from the Saracen's Head and Richard Baker from Aylsham's Market Place Bistro. Together they produced a series of demonstration sessions for a 'drop-in' audience, cooking up some fabulous dishes which the audience were invited to taste.

The demonstrations continued the following day with a return of Steve Thorpe and Derrol Waller, joined by Steve Norgate from The Beechwood in North Walsham and, fresh from directing the previous night's Gala Dinner, Jason Baxter, head of Hospitality & Catering at the High School. Blickling Hall's Catering Manager, Justin Gardner was also on hand, and together with Derrol Waller, took part in a lively Ready, Steady, Cook competition.

The Festival Gala Dinner occupied its traditional Friday evening slot when over 100 students at Aylsham High School cooked and served a five-course meal for more than 100 guests. Guest speaker Steve Thorpe, Festival patron and Head of the Hotel School at City College Norwich, praised the youngsters for producing a superb meal of the highest standard.

Aylsham Food Festival includes two food markets, the first on Friday morning, Aylsham Country Market, is a cooperative of local home-based producers who offer a range of cakes, biscuits, savouries, vegetables and eggs in addition to a selection of craft goods. Aylsham's FARMAaccredited Farmers Market, held every first and third Saturday of the month, enjoyed a very busy day, extending its hours to take in performances by junk percussion duo, Bang On! The duo, who use 'instruments' ranging from wheelie bins to plastic pop bottles, invited everyone to join in their irresistibly rhythmic workshops which were followed by a grand finale performance in Aylsham Market Place, featuring some 80 members of the public.

Family Cooking Workshops were another attraction on Festival Saturday, bringing over 50 children into Aylsham Town Hall, where they were able to make Spring Rolls and exotic 'Tutti Fruiti Crumble' to take home with them.

The Big Slow Breakfast has always rounded off Aylsham Food Festival and 2013 was no exception. Serving also as the final event in the fiveweek Norfolk Food & Drink Festival, the Breakfast saw 120 people sit down to enjoy sausages and bacon from Aylsham's three butchers, eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms from Salad Days fruit & veg, croissants from Pye Bakers and homemade bread courtesy of Slow Food Aylsham members.

Summing up the 2013 Food Festival, Slow Food Aylsham's Roger Willis said, "Pulling together all the different elements of this year's Festival has been a challenging experience, particularly as, for the first time, we were operating from two venues, Aylsham and Blickling. But thanks to the exceptional efforts of all Slow Food Aylsham members, plus back-up from principal sponsors, AEG and J B Postle, and our other supporters, I think we have pulled off the best Festival to date. The Cooking Academy vehicle has been a major success, while I think everyone agreed that the Dinner at the High School scaled new heights of excellence. Sheringham Players Perform The Unexpected Guest at Sheringham Little Theatre

For their Autumn production Sheringham Players present Agatha Christie’s ‘The Unexpected Guest’.

The Cast

Good wishes for the play have been received from Liza Goddard, Frazer Hines, Mark Wynter, Sophie Ward, and last but not least Renee Asherson. Renee Asherson is the only living Renee Asherson member of the original cast when the play was first staged at the Duchess Theatre in London’s West End, in August 1958. Many Agatha Christie devotees will remember Renee Asherson, now in her late 90s. So, it was a great honour for directors Greg Pope and Brenda Williams, and cast and crew to receive her good wishes for the play.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids

The team at Sainsburys North Walsham with grocery manager Simon Watson visited Millfield Pre-School recently to see how much the new equipment obtained under the Active Kids scheme was benefitting the children in their active and imaginative play.

Store Manager, Rob Wilkinson, said ‘The scheme really has grown over the last nine years and our customers have played a massive part in ensuring we continue to encourage all children, regardless of ability, to lead healthier, more active lifestyles’.

The desire by young people to get active and follow in the footsteps of their sporting heroes is echoed by a new survey of young people from the Youth Sport Trust, a partner of the retailer, as part of its Lead Your Generation campaign.

The results show that:

• Nearly two thirds (64%) of 11-18 year olds are still inspired by Team GB's performance at London 2012

• Well over half (60%) believe schools and young people should play a leading role in delivering an Olympic and Paralympic legacy • More than two thirds (67%) believe taking part in PE helps them perform better in school

The scheme has seen a surge in interest for sporting equipment and experiences following last summer's games with nearly 52,000 schools, clubs and groups now signed up to benefit from their membership to Sainsbury's Active Kids. This year alone, the scheme has delivered over £13 million worth of equipment and experiences to schools, clubs and organisations, up £5 million on the previous year. Meanwhile, £136 million worth of equipment and experiences has been donated to schools, groups and clubs across the UK since it launched in 2005.

Mothers' Union

Our October speaker was Sue Gibbons, a member of Wroxham Mothers’ Union. Sue had worked for Anglia Television for over 30 years and gave an extremely interesting and, in places amusing, talk of the ups and downs of working within broadcasting.

She also explained the importance of timing, which didn’t always go to plan when broadcasting the Sunday morning services.

North Norfolk District Council seeks volunteers for new community dog warden scheme

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched a community dog warden scheme to crack down on dog fouling across the district and is appealing for volunteers to sign up.

Dog fouling is a huge concern for residents, not just because of the mess, but because it poses health risks that can cause stomach upset, sore throat, asthma and in extreme cases it can cause blindness.

NNDC figures show that historically, the number of complaints it receives about dog fouling increases as the evenings start to draw in. With plans to re-launch its ‘No Messing’ anti dog-fouling campaign, NNDC hopes that both the campaign and the introduction of community dog wardens will assure residents that reducing the presence of dog fouling in public places is a priority.

The role of a community dog warden is to educate irresponsible dog owners that dog fouling is not acceptable, and together with support from NNDC’s Environmental

John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “When the clocks go back and the nights start to draw in, this is when we start to see a steady increase in complaints of dog fouling. Dog owners need to understand that they are posing a risk to the safety of others if they do not clear up after their dogs, and using the cover of darkness is just not acceptable.

“As a community dog warden, you will be a valuable part of your community and will be given the full support of NNDC’s Environmental Protection officers to help educate people on how we can make our local environment and community a cleaner place.”

Volunteers wishing to become a community dog warden will need to be friendly, open and willing to help make a difference. It is a non-confrontational role, and wardens will not

have the power to issue fixed penalty notices.

Volunteers can offer to work whenever they are free to give up their time, although patrols are not expected to last more than three hours at a time.

Each warden can expect to receive full training and will be provided with a high visibility jacket and a pocket notebook.

Mr Lee added: ‘Although community dog wardens will not be able to issue fixed penalty notices, they will be providing regular information to NNDC’s enforcement officers.

Irresponsible dog owners should be clear that we will not tolerate dog fouling in North Norfolk and we’ll have no hesitation in fining offenders.’

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER POPPIES

There are over seventy species of poppies: annuals, biennials, and perennials occurring in a wide range of habitats from lowlands to high mountains. Most are from Central and Southern Europe and temperate Asia, a few from South Africa, Australia and America.

Many of these species make excellent garden plants, the larger species are spectacular in

mixed or herbaceous border whilst several of the smaller poppies are suitable for a rock garden or an annual border. Most of the poppies are fully hardy to frost hardy and grow well in deep, fertile soil in full sun except for the alpine varieties which need good drainage.

Sow seed in spring: for annuals and biennials sow directly into the soil, for perennials, sow seed in containers in a cold frame. Divide perennials in spring or take root cuttings in late autumn or early winter.

However at this time of the year poppies mean only one thing, the red poppy that we wear on Remembrance Sunday. The poem quoted above by John McRae is believed to have been written because he was so moved by the death of a friend and the profusion of poppies he could see in a nearby cemetery. The custom of wearing a red poppy started in Georgia in the United States, where Moina Michael, a worker with the YMCA, was so moved by the Flanders field poem that she vowed to wear a poppy evermore. In 1921 the British Legion was formed and was approached by a YMCA friend of Moina Michael’s with samples of artificial poppies she had made. The idea of a ‘Poppy Day’, marking the anniversary of the Armistice, took off immediately. That year, on 11 November, the British Legion raised more than £100,000 from the sale of poppies.

He began to write ecstatic columns about poppy-land in 1883, and started the fad that brought thousands of visitors to the little villages on what the Great Eastern Railway promptly named the Poppy Line.

We have therefore a plant that provokes powerful images from the East Anglia Arcadia of Clement Scott ‘Neath the blue of the sky, in the green of the corn/It is there that the regal red poppies are born’ to the sea of mud and suffering around the First World War battlefields thirty years later which we shall remember on Sunday, 10th November and again on Monday, 11th November, Armistice Day, when the British Legion is planting a ‘Flanders Field’ of poppies beside the ramparts of the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.

Improvements for Fakenham, Holt, Mundesley and North Walsham car parks Repairs and improvements are taking place at North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) car parks in Fakenham, Holt, Mundesley and North Walsham in October and November.

Four car parks are involved, Albert Street car park in Holt (work has already been completed ahead of schedule), the North Walsham Council Offices car park (work starting on 28 October and expected to last 7 - 10 days), the Fakenham Connect and Community Centre car park and road access in Fakenham (work starting on 7 November and expected to last two weeks) and Beach Road car park in Mundesley (work starting on 18 November and expected to last two weeks). Following a competitive tender process, the contract for the work has been awarded to Thrower and Rutland Ltd. of Felthorpe.

Weather permitting, the works are expected to be completed within the programme times.

The one remaining pay and display car park now involved (Beach Road in Mundesley) will remain open throughout the works, although there will be some reduction in the number of

spaces available as the work is taking place, which may result is some inconvenience to car park users. North Walsham Council Offices car park will be closed throughout the work, although pedestrian access to the CAB building will remain open during the opening hours.

The Fakenham Connect and Community Centre car park will be closed during the day but open in the evenings for users of the Community Centre. The glass recycling centres located on the car parks will remain open.

In all cases completion is due by the end of November so as not to interfere with Christmas shoppers.

Consideration has been given to all car park stakeholders and advance partial closure signs are currently displayed in the affected car parks. Localised leaflet drops have also been undertaken where appropriate.

The work in all four areas involves repairs, resurfacing and relining, and where possible car parking spaces will be reconfigured to increase the total number of spaces. In all cases the number of disabled driver spaces will be retained or increased. The total cost is close to £115,000.

Although the final cat in the colony mentioned previously has still to be caught and neutered, we believe we will finally be successful as the cat is now going into the trap for food. It is just a case of catching the cat on a day when operating time is available. In the meantime, another cat not seen before has been caught and neutered.

Buckaroo, the little kitten which came in recently did give us cause for concern to start with as he had such a large tummy, which we now think was due to malnutrition. With regular meals he has lost his tummy and we are delighted to see him joining in the chasing and playing games with the other kittens.

Depending on the reasons why a cat has come into care, we will blood test for FIV and FELV. We do however always test when a cat is handed in as a stray. Fortunately over the years we have had very few cats where the initial blood test has come back as positive. In these cases a further sample is sent to an external laboratory for confirmation and we have thankfully had few instances where the second test has indicated the cat has got FIV or FELV.

When Bombardier arrived in care there was nothing to indicate that he would test positive for FIV but, unfortunately, he has and further tests have confirmed the initial result. This does not mean that Bombardier cannot find a loving home, merely that he will need to be an indoor cat either on his own or with other FIV positive cats. Bombardier is only five years old, is a handsome ginger and white lad, very friendly and laid back who I am sure will soon find someone to love him.

The Federation of Small Businesses reports that there are over 4.5 million small to medium sized businesses operating in the UK today.

A key concern for small businesses is bad debt and cash flow issues. With the UK tightening its belt, a small business must ensure that it has efficient procedures in place to recover debts, particularly those debts of significant value.

The unfortunate truth is that there is a worrying trend of large or public listed companies using their size and bargaining power to delay payment to small businesses. A large company which contracts with many small suppliers often has the ability to take its business elsewhere which means it can move from supplier to supplier leaving unpaid invoices in its wake.

Clearly, in the current climate, we wish small businesses to grow and not be forced to postpone hiring new staff or investing in expansion due to being left waiting for payment. Many businesses are compelled to borrow funds at unfavourable interest rates to tide them over between payment of their invoices due to attempts by larger companies to stretch payment terms upwards of 30 days.

It was for this very reason that in 1997, the government introduced The Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, later supplemented by The Late Payment of Commercial Debts Regulations 2002. The purpose of the Late Payment legislation is to encourage a culture of prompt payment by allowing small businesses to charge each other, as well as large and public sector business, a statutory rate of interest for late payment beyond agreed payment terms. The rate of interest can be calculated by adding 8% to the “reference rate” under the legislation, which is the Bank of England base rate set for the six month period in which the debt falls due. Even with the current Bank of England lingering at a measly 0.5%, an interest rate of 8.5% charged on outstanding invoices can do much to persuade prompt payment.

However, Experian reports that the Late Payment legislation has little effect in situations where larger businesses have such extensive bargaining power that businesses contracting with them feel compelled to accept extended payment terms as they believe themselves to be in no position to argue

otherwise.

In these circumstances, large companies are successfully avoiding the penalties of late payment by technically payment within agreed payment terms, albeit extended ones.

So what is the solution? Unfortunately, there are no easy answers; however, Hayes + Storr can provide you with invaluable advice on the steps that businesses can take to investigate who their customers prior to contracting with them and when things go wrong, assist in ensure everything is done for your business to recover those late payments.

North Norfolk households given more time to save money on gas and electricity bills

People living in North Norfolk have been given extra time to sign up for an energy scheme that could help cut their gas and electricity bills.

North Norfolk’s Big Switch and Save scheme has been extended until 18 November, meaning people now have another month to join.

The first round of the scheme was launched in North Norfolk in March this year, with 2796 households in the area registering. 70% of households providing realistic energy usage figures were able to save, 46% were able to save more than £50 a year and 23% up to £50 a year. Those households able to save through the scheme achieved an overall average annual saving of £126, with the highest average annual saving of £266 for ‘dual fuel’ customers

opting for online billing.

It is hoped that a new Collective Switching Tariff will be available in time for the energy auction and that this will result in a better offer for customers switching supplier in this way.

Anyone who missed out on the first round or who thinks they could make even more savings on their gas or electricity bills, is now able to register for a second round of the Big Switch and Save scheme, and the deadline for signing up has been extended to 18 November.

North Norfolk households are being given an opportunity to take advantage of a very special offer from North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) to help them prepare their gardens for winter, and to help reduce the amount of waste deposited in land-fill sites.

Over the next few months household residents will be able to order and pay for a garden waste bin for 2014/15, have it delivered within a few days and then pay nothing extra for its use until 1 April 2015.

Household residents living in the North Norfolk district can therefore take advantage of NNDC’s fortnightly garden waste collection service, which provides a 240 litre ‘brown’ bin that you can fill with both hard and soft garden waste, for up to 17 months for the price of 12, just £42.12. The offer applies to new customers or existing customers taking an extra bin.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Environment, John Lee, said, “Now’s the time many people start to clear up their gardens ready for the winter.

This special promotion of the brown garden bins is one way we can help people who don’t have their own compost heap while reducing the amount of garden waste that goes to land-fill each year at the same time.

We hope a lot of households will take up the offer and look forward to hearing from them.”

Each year the council collects and composts thousands of tonnes of garden waste (grass cuttings, hedge clippings, flowers, twigs, branches, prunings, leaves, weeds and even shredded paper can all be put in the brown garden waste bin) from homes in North Norfolk, greatly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill in the process.

Mixed Fortunes for Defending Champions Defending Champions NWSCA were forced to play up two players from NWSCB as Dennis Elliott and Paul Price joined John Batchford for an away tie against Outlaws in the first division of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League. Batchford took a brace, losing out to John Hancock in four. With the score at 4-4, David Lake out-hit Elliott in straight and teamed up with Hancock for a four set doubles win that sealed Outlaw’s 6-4 match win.

Batchford took a maximum the following week as he was reunited with regular team-mates Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane for a 6-4 win against Specials. The same NWSCA trio also hosted Sharks at Antingham where Matt Hudson picked up a terrific brace as he defeated Batchford in five and Beane in four.

Steve Hudson also won a five-setter against Batchford, but Baldock-Yaxley was untroubled as NWSCA won 7-3.

Wednesday 13 November – 1.30pm - Walcott Prom Bookable Walk – Grade 1 and Introductory – Any distance to 1.3 miles – A flat promenade walk on hard surfaces.

Meet outside the Kingfisher Restaurant, Coast Rd,

hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Philip Stone and Phil Mole (playing up). Humphries forehand and Hancock’s spin saw them defeat Mole and Sawyer respectively in straight before Stone hit some good backhands to beat Patterson in four. Mole was playing up a division but his great retrieving saw him win a set against Hancock – and he had five chances to take the Outlaw the distance, but from 5-10 in the fourth Hancock slowed the pace down and spun more to win a passionate encounter 12-10. Humphries and Patterson beat Stone and Sawyer respectively in four. Stone took the first set from Hancock, but the Outlaw won a battle of great rallies in four. Patterson won the sixth consecutive four set match of the night against Mole before Humphries and Sawyer enjoyed their traditional five-setter. Sawyer forced the decider from 1-5 down in the fourth and a missed forehand proved pivotal for Humphries at 6-4 in the fifth as Sawyer won 11-8. A comfortable doubles for Hancock and Humphries concluded Outlaw’s 8-2 win.

NWSCD also won 8-2 away to Barracudas with maximums for Stone and Joe Kirkup plus a single for Sawyer. Mike Toye and Ray Amo both beat the NWSCD captain in four, while badly timed service errors hurt Derek Philpott at crucial stages in two of his contests.

Elsewhere NWSCB had two match-points in the doubles away to Cromer Backhanders which would have secured them an overall 6-4 match win had they taken their chances, but the Cromer team came back to win in five to see the contest end as a draw. NWSCB also lost 9-1 to Gresham’s School A with Paul Price defeating Ian Darricott. NWSCC continued their good start in the second division with a 7-3 win away to Aylsham C followed by an 8-2 victory at home against Cromer Crosscourts.

Finally there were two 8-2 losses for NWSCE against both Crosscourts and Poachers.
