County Councillor Report for Holt Division

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

£600 million-plus county deal for Norfolk, public consultation soon

Councillors have agreed to progress a £612 9m County Deal, to transfer more powers and funding from the Government to Norfolk NCC Cabinet believes we have a generational opportunity to unlock significant long-term funding, gain greater freedom to decide how best to meet local needs and create new opportunities for the people who live and work in Norfolk.

Moving decisions and funding previously controlled in Westminster to Norfolk, for Norfolk; to take control of our own destiny and shape our future; a catalyst for change to build on our strengths, address challenges, deliver infrastructure and grow the economy

Norfolk as a rural county been left behind, which is why devolution is a prize, and one worth fighting for

A six-week public consultation on the deal will be launched on 6 February The full council will decide whether to support the change to an elected leader, in December If approved, an election will be held in May 2024

According to the report to cabinet, the deal would mean that, from 2024 onwards, the County Council could:

• target funding and resources to Norfolk’s own priorities, with a new investment fund of £20m per year for 30 years

• unlock housing and employment sites with an injection of £12.9m capital funding in this Spending Review period and new powers to drive regeneration, housing and development priorities

• invest in the skills we know we need, with devolution of the adult education budget and input into the new Local Skills Improvement Plans

• invest in local transport planning and consolidate transport budgets to direct funding to better meet our local needs and priorities

• strengthen the local business voice to inform local decision making and strategic economic planning through the future integration of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership

• have a council leader who is directly elected by the public, with the first election in May 2024

• raise our influence regionally and nationally, enabling our voice to be better heard by Government to shape future policies and funding decisions for the benefit of our County

The Glaven Centre

Here at the Glaven Centre we are beginning the New Year with a restructuring of staff and have said thank you and goodbye to manager Keith Barnes We wish him well in all his future endeavours and the centre will continue with day care and clinical support at the forefront

Norfolk's multi-million-pound plan for 27 new or expanded schools

A total of 27 new schools could be built across the county within the next 10 years as part of Norfolk County Council’s £308 million Local Growth and Investment Plan

A report to the council’s cabinet set out the need for new school-builds and eight existing school expansions to ensure sufficient places in 24 areas of major planned housing growth But while some areas are set to grow significantly, there has been an overall decline in the birth rate in Norfolk of 19% since 2012 which has led to 523 fewer primary places being needed this year This decline reflects the national picture generally of reducing birth rate

The role of the Council is to make sure there are enough school places for children from the age of four to 16 and to co-ordinate admission numbers for schools, particularly where we are seeing significant demographic change in particular areas of the county

Norfolk has an excellent track record of planning for and delivering new school builds and expansions to make sure children already living in or moving to an area have a school place in their locality The Council will be working closely with all schools across the education system in the coming months to mitigate the impact wherever possible where we know we face declining pupil numbers

Significant growth is also planned for Aylsham, Blofield/Brundall, Bradwell, Caister-on-Sea, Cringleford, Dereham, Downham Market, East Norwich, Easton, Fakenham, Hellesdon, Hethersett, Holt, King’s Lynn, Long Stratton, North Walsham, South Wootton, Taverham, Wisbech and Wymondham

Areas which have seen a significant decline in the number of children against available capacity are: Acle, Cromer and Sheringham, Dereham, Diss, Flegg, King’s Lynn central area, Litcham, Loddon, North Walsham, Reepham, and Stalham. Methods to manage dropping pupil numbers include encouraging schools not to admit more pupils than stated in their planned admission numbers, encouraging schools to changing age ranges for a school, and merging schools in existing or newly provided buildings, with closure of schools being a last resort

County Councillor for Holt Division (Aylmerton, Barningham, Bessingham, Cley-next-the-Sea, East Beckham, East Runton, Gresham, High Kelling, Holt, Kelling, Matlaske, Metton, Runton, Salthouse, Sustead, Upper Sheringham, West Beckham, West Runton,Weybourne).

We have attended some memorable events and one in particular, seeing the wonderful tenor Paul Phoenix at St Andrews Church in Holt We were kindly invited to this event by our friends at the Poppy Club This was indeed a stunning performance from start to finish, accompanied by the extremely talented Richard Peaver on the piano

We have started to provide two-course freshly homecooked meals to the Poppy Club once a month and we have received some lovely feedback We love to help out our local community and work in partnership with those who require any services we have to offer We have had some new clients join us who are settling in well and have expressed how much they enjoy coming each week. We are thrilled to hear this and pride ourselves on offering a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere with highly trained staff and a family feel Do get in touch on 01263 740762 if you feel you know of anyone who could benefit from our wonderful centre here at the Glaven

We are looking out for those beautiful snowdrops and daffodils which bloom at this time of year after being underground for so long, waiting to spring up to say hello. We hope that you feel you can emerge brightly from this winter as the light slowly returns We send our warm wishes to each and every reader

On top of the heartbreak and worry that a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness can cause, there will be a raft of concerns and uncertainties about your care and financial affairs, and it can be difficult to know exactly how to prepare from a legal standpoint

There are steps you can take to ensure that your care runs smoothly following such a diagnosis

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for Health and Welfare can be an essential part of future care planning, alongside the preparation of an Advance Care Plan

Considerations for an LPA for Health and Welfare

An LPA for Health and Welfare allows you to appoint a number of individuals to act as your ‘attorneys’ with respect to your health and care decisions Your attorneys must be over 18 years of age and have mental capacity

You must select your attorneys carefully, having due consideration as to whether such individual(s) would be appropriate attorney(s) and whether they have suitable character/experience to make difficult decisions on your behalf

Your attorneys will have the power to make decisions on your behalf in relation to your health and care, including but not limited to; your daily routine (diet etc), medical care, moving into a care home and also decisions surrounding life sustaining treatment (with the latter being subject to express authorisation being provided within the LPA itself)

It is important to note that your attorneys can only deal with your health and care decisions when you become incapable of making such decisions yourself

You may also wish to prepare an LPA for Property and Financial Affairs This will deal with decisions surrounding your banking, selling your home and paying any bills and outgoings during your lifetime

Advance Care Plan

In addition to an LPA, an Advance Care Plan (ACP) allows you to clearly set out your personal wishes regarding the care and treatment you should receive It is not a legally binding document; however, it ensures that the people involved in your care know what is important to you

ACPs are normally made together with your healthcare team Some people feel they need help from their nurse or doctor to fill in an ACP, but you can complete one yourself. An example of an Advance Care Plan template can be found on the Dementia UK website

Once completed, you should keep a copy amongst your papers and also give a copy to anyone else involved in your care If you have prepared an LPA for Health and Welfare, then you should make a note of this within your ACP

Will considerations

It is also important that you consider the terms of your existing will (if held) to ensure that no changes are required If you do not have an existing will, then it is advisable that you consider preparing one

Written by popular playwright Jean McConnell and presented by local amateur company, Stage Direct, ‘Deckchairs’ promises to be ideal seaside entertainment with something for everyone, according to experienced director, Nigel Manson

As Nigel explains, ‘we recruited a talented all-girl cast of ten, and they ’ve been rehearsing since before Christmas The five playlets are developing beautifully and I’m very confident the audiences will really enjoy what Deckchairs has to offer!’

This will be Stage Direct ’s third production at Sheringham Little Theatre in the past 12 months, although this time they have included a Saturday matinee performance for the first time in many years As Nigel remarked, ‘the matinee is intended to appeal to those who would rather not venture out on cold dark nights!’

Performances will be Friday 10th March at 7 30pm and Saturday 11th March at 2.30 & 7.30pm. Tickets priced at £12.50 are available from the Sheringham Little Theatre box office (01263-822347), or online via their website at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

Dear Friends,

Beginning with the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday, the season of Lent is one of the great seasons in the Church’s calendar It is an opportunity for Christians to prepare for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection and is a season that is characterised by prayer, fasting and alms giving The faithful are encouraged to put aside more time for prayer, to make personal sacrifices and to be generous in giving While the observance of Lent is perhaps not what it used to be, it remains an opportunity for spiritual renewal and growth and not just for weight loss! So, as well as giving up on chocolate, alcohol or desserts, I hope people will be encouraged to consider their spiritual lives and their relationship with a loving, forgiving God who’s saving love is revealed through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and so deepen the faith we already have

During Lent this year we will be giving people an opportunity, in an informal and relaxed setting, to find out more about the Christian faith and/or renew their faith We will using a new multi-media resource called “Bread of Life” which consists of six different modules and will explore our relationship with God through Christ Jesus, the place of the Bible in contemporary life, the role of prayer, what it means to receive Christ in Holy Communion, and how we might live out our Christian faith in daily life The course is aimed at anyone who has questions, anyone who wants to learn more, and anyone wanting to deepen their Christian faith More details will be found on our website or church notice boards, but all are welcome to join us as we meet together during Lent Why not join us?

kind regards, Fr. Howard

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to care for God’s acre. Can you spare some time to join a group of volunteers to help maintain the churchyard? No faith required, only a desire to help maintain a sacred space in the middle of Holt as a place of rest for the departed, solace for the living, and a haven for wildlife

Dear Jo,

Bus Services

Eric Vardy, in his Country Councillor report in the Jan 2023 issue of the Holt Chronicle, repeats a claim from a Department for Transport news release that the £2 Bus fare cap will take 2 million car journeys off the road (The 2 million figure will be across all of the UK).

While the temporary reduction in fares is welcome and may encourage people back to using the bus, I feel it is unlikely to achieve a "modal shift" of that scale or maintain that shift for the long term in North Norfolk Service frequency and connectivity has to be radically improved to get people to reduce their car use And the related "Bus Service Improvement Plan" does not go far enough, either

More funding is needed to improve bus and train service to permanently reduce car use Jarret Walker's "Seven Requirements of Public transit" (easily found on Wikipedia) should be used to guide how the funding should be spent in a balanced and effective way.

Simple fare reduction only delivers one of the "seven requirements" and therefore won't result in much "modal shift", although recent experiments in Germany with a countrywide value priced pass--the €49 per month "German Ticket" has been effective because it encourages repeated additional use over a wide area more than a "PAYG" approach with reduced fares that tends to favour existing bus riders

Introducing Your Local Community Connectors

The Community Connectors at North Norfolk District Council are a service which promotes and supports individual groups and organisations across the District

They are on hand to provide residents with information about local groups, where they will receive a warm welcome, or signpost to organisations who can provide financial, practical or emotional assistance

Louise covers Cromer and the surrounding villages

Coralie covers villages surrounding Sheringham and North Walsham

Claire (1) covers Holt and surrounding area, also Wells

Jenna covers Sheringham and North Walsham towns.

Emma covers Fakenham and surrounding villages and Wells

Claire (2) covers Hoveton and surrounding villages

Rebecca covers Stalham and surrounding villages

Catherine is team leader

Working across North Norfolk, they are well connected with the local community and have information on food hubs, community fridges and warm spaces near you

As part of the Cost-of-Living Crisis, they have also been involved with the community warm spaces that have opened This is where anyone in the community can go and spend time for free company, hot food, and drinks regardless of their financial situation.

Do you run a group? Need to recruit volunteers or are looking for funding? Perhaps you want to get involved in a new hobby, or just need some information and support – the Community Connectors would love to hear from you

You can get in touch with Louise at louise cox@north-norfolk gov uk or 01263 516404.

The Community Connector Team are funded by the Health & Wellbeing Partnership and North Norfolk District Council

Find out more about them at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/ communityconnectors

(It would be good to have a monthly country-wide scheme in the UK covering buses and other local transport)

Sometimes a small change to better address one of the "seven requirements" can deliver a good outcome

For example, the last Sanders Service 44 connects well at Sheringham on Mon-Thurs to the last train from Norwich but passes too early to connect to the last train on Fri-Sat (which arrives a little later) If route 44A could leave Norwich 15 minutes later, it would connect and also allow for a better night out in Norwich Another example would be to extend Service 44 to serve the N&N Hospital, allowing single seat (and single fare) transport to hospital appointments and visits Sadly, neither option was included in the "Bus Service Improvement Plan"

Dear Jo,

Once again, a great big thank you to all who supported our charity appeal, and we are pleased to advise that a total of £150 was collected and will be donated to Sheringham Woodfield School

Again, a very big thank you

A bit of friendly advice

Dear Jo

We’re often urged to support our local tradesmen and women, but this has to be a two-way relationship Local tradespeople ought to respect their customers and provide a professional and friendly service Sadly, in my experience, while some local tradesmen and women provide a good service, too many let customers down How often have you tried to contact an electrician, plumber, builder or roofer and found that there is no website, no email address, just a phone number that no-one ever answers?

You leave a message but get no response If you do manage to contact someone, they arrange to come round to look at the job, but they don’t turn up and never get back to you. This is my experience again and again. How about you? So, local tradespeople, if you want us to offer you work, please provide a professional service

Astley Primary School's ACE New Library

Friday 2nd December 2022 saw the opening of Astley Primary School's ACE new library with special guest Duncan Baker, MP!

Astley's Deputy Head, Mr Seager said: 'A thriving school library is the beating heart of reading within a school We want children to have access to a range of books to cover all interests -whatever they may be. Our aim is to develop a real love of reading throughout a child's journey at Astley and having a library full of wonderful books is a key aspect '

Mr Seager explains how the staff at Astley have worked hard to improve reading at the school with initiatives such as 'Big Read', 'ACE Book Share' and brand-new reading scheme books Despite this, staff felt the library didn't match up to these great reading initiatives-

Astley has used the considerable artistic talents of Year 6 teacher, Miss Le-Rose, to design the murals for the library walls Her staff painting team have done an amazing job! This effort has been matched by the superb team at the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, who spent three days sorting, labelling and organising all the wonderful new books. Many Astley staff have contributed in one way or another -just another reason why Astley is such an ACE school!

An amazing £1500 donation was made by Duncan Baker MP, who after visiting the school last year had chosen to run one of his charitable miles in the London Marathon on behalf of the Friends of Astley Primary. Astley's ACE community has come together in support of the library project, from parents and carers to the tireless work of the Friends of Astley in fundraising a huge sum of money, including donations from the Holt Society and from being Tesco, Sheringham's chosen charity

Children will have the chance to choose books related to different ACE curriculum areas All books are clearly labelled and categorised by topic to help Class teachers will choose a selection of books for the classroom which can match ACE curriculum areas -so children can get fully immersed in a topic! Each class will have a regular weekly time in the library -not just to pick books, but to listen to stories and read with one another. Children will have a free pick of both non-fiction and

fiction to share and enjoy with parents at home Astley is hoping that parents will enjoy the books every bit as much as their children!

Mr Seager expressed thanks to all those involved in the library renovation, 'We aim to develop a love of reading at Astley -the library won’t stand still! Competitions, events, clubs, author visits –the library is just the start of another exciting chapter in the Astley ACE fairy story '

ACE is the 'Astley Curriculum Experience,' inspirational, challenging, inclusive and enabling children to become kind and respectful lifelong learners who have CHOICE

Astley Primary School is part of Synergy Multi-Academy Trust.

Fastest Pud in Norfolk!

I do hope that no one challenges me on this (!) but in an emergency, having completely forgotten to produce a pudding one Sunday, I decided to try something I have always meant to do but never got around to; a microwaved steam pudding. I have seen it done many times (thank you for the inspiration, Joselyn!) but never quite plucked up the courage, but these were desperate times So with trepidation I whisked up what I hoped would be a delicious, light airy sponge, grabbed the marmalade and went for it…what a wonderful invention the microwave is! Not only does it produce the lightest sponge I’ve ever had, but it is also a super economical way to cook, something we all need at the moment, and the speed it does it! This recipe feeds around 4 to 5 if you add lashings of custard (microwave again, obviously) and I’m so blown away by the ease and speed that my family ’s waistlines will be increasing over the next few weeks and months as I experiment with different flavours…I guess that ’s the end of the New Year Diet!

Editor ’s Recipe

It’s Valentine’s Day and what could be more of a treat for your amore than an indulgent chocolate pudding to round off a special meal? As you know, I try to keep recipes simple, and this one is no exception There is a little magic involved but the pudding does all that in the oven, producing a light sponge on top with a delicious, silky sauce on the bottom Excellent served with cream, crème fraise or a delicate crème anglaise (custard to you and me) Add a few of your favourite berries on the plate for a special touch.

This pudding is quite rich, so will easily serve 6, any leftovers can be covered and put in the fridge to be reheated in the microwave

Self-saucing Chocolate Pudding

Ingredients

130g plain flour

25g cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

pinch of salt

100g soft brown sugar

60g butter, melted (+ extra for greasing)

1 large egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

125ml whole milk

Speedy Sponge Pudding with Marmalade

4 oz self-raising flour

1 tsp baking powder

3 oz caster sugar

3 oz butter/marge (I use Clover)

1 large egg

1 tablespoon milk

1 dessert spoon orange blossom water (optional, use orange essence if you prefer)

2 tablespoons orange marmalade

Put everything except the marmalade into a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy Grease a 2lb pudding basin generously, add a circle of greaseproof paper into the bottom and grease this also Spoon your marmalade into the bottom of the basin, and spoon your pudding mix on top, evening out the top. Put into the microwave on high for 5 mins, check if its still a little loose in the middle return for another minute Carefully remove from microwave and run a knife all around the outside edge of the pudding, and using a cloth carefully upend the pudding onto a plate, lifting off the bowl Remove the greaseproof paper, being very careful as the marmalade will be extremely hot, and voila! It ’s ready to serve with custard, ice cream or cream Experiment with golden syrup, lemon curd or jam in place of marmalade

For the sauce

25g cocoa powder

100g soft brown sugar

250ml boiling water

Method

Preheat your oven to Gas 4, 180C / 160C fan Grease an (approximately) 8 inch pie dish or baking dish with butter

In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt Whisk together to combine.

In a separate medium mixing bowl, beat together the melted butter and sugar until smooth Add the egg and vanilla and beat well, scraping down the sides of the bowl to make sure everything is well combined and smooth. Add ⅓ of the dry ingredients to the butter mixture Stir through gently until just combined Now add half of the milk, mix gently again Continue like this until all the flour and milk is combined just It is important not to overmix or the cake may turn out dense and tough

Pour the pudding batter into your prepared dish

For the sauce: Mix together the cocoa, sugar and boiling water in a small bowl until well combined (it will look watery but don’t worry).

Slowly pour the sauce over the back of a spoon all over the top of the pudding mixture in the dish

Bake the pudding for 25-30 minutes The top should look dry and be a little springy Lift carefully out of the oven (the sponge will be floating on the sauce) and serve.

Enjoy! – Jo

Pickle has come into the rescue for a 6-week holiday, he was found 3 years ago out during the day it was discovered that he was blind, so his finders have been caring for him since then.

I have put him on a strict diet as he is rather overweight, an overweight hog cannot curl up into a tight ball and makes them vulnerable to predators and frost if they are hibernating, luckily Pickle does not have to worry about that, but it ’s better for his wellbeing if he loses a bit of weight while he’s on his holidays!

Tale of Two Obelisks. Holt and East Dereham

As we all know, there has for many years been a debate around why we have an obelisk, from where did it originate and are the mileages correct The ‘story ’ in Holt is simple and is expressed most eloquently by our own Steve Benson in his book A Stroll through Georgian Holt: “Now we have reached Obelisk Plain The pineapple-topped obelisk itself was a gatepost at Melton Constable Park and the distances engraved thereon are clearly incorrect The reason for this, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner tells us in his monumental Buildings of England, is that they are given ‘squirearchically ’ i e , from one country house to another No-one knows how the obelisk arrived in Holt ”

Steve, later in our film of the same name, adds that, at some point, a second gate post was gifted to East Dereham and during the Second World War, in compliance with government requests, all signposts were to be rendered unreadable It is said that Dereham decided that they would put their obelisk down a well, whilst here in Holt we simply whitewashed out the place names and mileages

This may well be correct, and who are we to question Steve. Given, though, that it is the logo of our Society, Margaret Bird, a renowned historian of Holt and its surroundings, author of many books on Georgian Holt and, of course a member of the Holt Society, decided to disentangle myth from fact

First, we can confirm that there were indeed obelisks in both Holt and East Dereham and the photographs below show both. Not quite a matching pair but did they once match and were then changed by the recipients? The lower photograph is of East Dereham’s obelisk, cropped from a postcard from the Wrench series, postally used in 1904 The Holt photograph, above, is cropped from a photograph of a similar vintage It can be seen that there are some distinct architecturally similarities, apart from the finials and the mileages, both of which we comment on in due course These similarities certainly give some credence to the belief that once they could have been a pair of gateposts

From the work undertaken by Margaret Bird, who has been in a ‘Miss Marple’ mode recently, looking for and finding evidence to support or correct previous explanations. We know the fate of the Dereham Obelisk, as recounted by Beanie Brown of the Dereham Heritage Trust, and it seems there is substance to the story that it was put down a well

So, this is the most likely timeline: Sir Jacob Astley, of Melton Constable, installs two gate piers, in the park, which may date from the Hall’s construction between 1664 and 1670

Capability Brown landscapes the park from 1764 to 1769 At this time, Sir Edward Astley removes the two piers, which are now redundant, and gives one to Holt and the other to East Dereham. Both towns erect them as obelisks, at the far end of their marketplaces. In Dereham, this took place in 1768 but at the time of writing we cannot be certain of the Holt date

Each town incises different mileages on the piers, giving accurate distances to numerous towns and properties within Norfolk Whilst the list of places chosen are closely aligned to each other, the layouts used are different on the two obelisks as are the fonts as can be seen on the photographs opposite

These differences, in both style and mileages (for example, Dereham to Hingham is 10 miles but Holt to Hingham is 27 miles) indicate that both were carved after removal from Melton Constable The distances on the surviving Holt obelisk have been cross-checked with contemporary maps and do appear to be accurate, although they do not necessarily reflect modern distances due to changes in road layout over the years The obelisks thus became milestones, at a time when milestones were being erected in some numbers along turnpike and other roads

Noble Holt cherishes its obelisk but at a date unknown, perhaps mid-20th century, Dereham feels the need to remove an obstacle to traffic, breaking up its obelisk and placing the remains in a well The pump that drew water from this well was near the Assembly Rooms in Market Place Our thanks to the Dereham Heritage Trust for this information.

Sadly, no evidence has been found thus far to support or verify an impetus to action caused by a feared German invasion, and a determination not to give help to the enemy!

Little is known of the finials. Dereham’s obelisk has a gas lamp which may, given its location, have been used to light the surrounding area for the safety of the public However, Holt has no such feature Could this have been due to the known poor gas supply? Current research does not assist us, but we keep looking Hopefully, more will be revealed in the booklet we have commissioned Margaret to write

It is most appropriate, that, as the Holt Obelisk is the Holt Society ’s logo, we should endeavour to separate fact from fiction and for this we are indebted to Margaret Bird and to both Robena (Beanie) Brown and Trevor Ogden from the Bishop Bonners Cottages Museum in Dereham, who have helped us enormously I, of course, extend my apologies to Steve!

SDFC Engagement Day and AGM

January 21st saw the First SDFC engagement day since Covid The opportunity to meet face to face for the first time in a long time was very much appreciated and the 100+ people who attended really appreciated connecting with each other for advice and support

15 Organisations attended which provide support locally for those living with dementia These included local support from Playing for Cake, Age Concern North Norfolk and the Poppy Group at Holt Agencies supporting carers were also there. It was a relief for many to find access to support as well as learn from others living with dementia ways to manage their situations

This event is also a way to represent the issues raised by families and those living with dementia The main issues raised were a continuation of concern in regard to the diagnosis process and in particular the support which is apparently not available immediately after diagnosis. Secondly issues were raised about inconsistency in the dementia review process at Surgeries As a result of the collaboration with Sheringham Medical Practice and the PPG at Sheringham and SDFC this process was felt to be much more beneficial and available than in other areas in North Norfolk. These are both issues that SDFC will look to raise with the relevant authorities in the coming months.

At the AGM new members were voted on to the committee However, our treasurer wishes to stand down and we are looking for a new treasurer for what is not an onerous task If anyone is interested in coming on to the committee to support us make the town more dementia accessible you would be most welcome. Contact secretarysdfc@gmail if you would like to be involved in any way or need help accessing support We would like to thank all the organisations who attended and the Lighthouse church for allowing us to meet there for what was a very successful day in supporting those with dementia and their families and friends

Laser therapy helping pets at Toll Barn Vets

At Toll Barn Vets we believe in constantly providing the highest standard of care for our patients by utilising cutting edge technology to reduce reliance on medication This is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life

As part of this commitment we offer our patients Laser Therapy which reduces inflammation and provides pain relief It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing

It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring application of needles

Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with most sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform these treatments and are happy to discuss the suitability of laser therapy as part of your pets care

Reflections from the outgoing Chair of ACNN

When I moved to North Norfolk in 2013, I was interested in the needs of the many older people here, and volunteered at Glendon House (Overstrand) and Halsey House (Dementia Friendly Cromer)

I became a trustee at Age Concern North Norfolk in 2015, and then chair in 2016 I stepped down from the position at the end of October 2022, and completed a final “consultancy basis” period at the end of January 2023. I continue to serve as a Governor of the NSFT (Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust)

Over the last 8 years, funding bid processes have become more rigorous, and during 2019-2021, with the pandemic sandwiched in between those years, the charity had to ride out many storms Over the years, various trustees have given freely and faithfully of their time The current chair is my former colleague Mark Danson-Hatcher, and I am confident that he will continue to guide the “ship” into smoother waters – not least because of his naval background! He is supported by 4 other trustees Anneliese Maerz (in post since February 2021) continues to successfully manage the Day Centre Hub’s activities

It gives me great pleasure to be handing over to a new chair at a high point, where referrals have never been greater, and staff have never delivered so many delicious “Meals on Heels ” I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all staff members, trustees and other volunteers, who continue to make ACNN such a success

Our project is designed in part for people with mild to moderate mental health and offers opportunities to build mental resilience alongside making connections in the community and having a lot of laughs We all have a level of mental health, so these group activities are really for all of us.

It would be amazing if there was a way this could be published in the Sheringham Independent as I know this is a far-reaching local publication with many readers who may benefit from these regular sessions

We have sessions scheduled starting and finishing at Sheringham Community Centre on Wednesday afternoons from 2 00pm - 3 30pm on the following dates:

• February - 15th and 22nd

• March - 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th

Heritage Railway to See Visit from Celebrity Steam Locomotive

Visitors to the North Norfolk Railway between 27 May and 4 June this year will have the opportunity to travel on special trains hauled by steam locomotive No 60163 Tornado

Tornado, the first mainline steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960, made headlines as it steamed for the first time in 2008. Since then, the engine has continued to impress, hauling Royal Trains and appearing on the big screen in Paddington 2 as well as on numerous television programmes including BBC Top Gear ’s famous “Race to The North”

Tornado is also the fastest steam engine to run since the 1960s, reaching 100mph on a test train in 2017 but will be running at a more sedate 25 miles hour through the beautiful North Norfolk countryside The engine spends most of its time hauling premier excursions on the mainline, and this is one of the locomotive’s first appearances for fifteen months, so tickets are expected to sell fast

Special trains hauled by Tornado will depart from Sheringham Station at 10.00, 11.40, 13.20, 15.00 and 16.40 each day from 27 May to 4 June –advance booking via www nnrailway co uk is essential Tickets will include a reserved seat for one return journey from Sheringham to Holt, with extra time at Holt station for passengers to take photographs of the express engine

This beautiful, easy to learn and effective work covers a wide range of topics that affect us all on a daily basis, including Health, Fears and Phobias, Critical Thinking, Friendship, Self-Esteem, Money and Prosperity, Work, Time Management, Retirement, Relationships, Ageing and many more

Our mind and body are always talking to us, guiding us to take steps to help ourselves, build ourselves up with kind and compassionate thoughts and feelings rather than listening and following our inner critic that focuses on beating us up instead What is the first thought that you awoke with this morning? Was it thoughts that were creating feelings of joy, peace and balance? or anxiety, not enoughness and chasing time? Whatever they may be, when listening without judgement you can begin to heal and achieve what you desire When you think it, you feel it and you create it

What messages is your body telling you today? What do you need right now? How do you want to feel? or maybe, What is scaring you? Let me know how I can help you.

If you are ready for change and would like to know more, contact me on 07803 521744 www thefeelgoodhealgoodcoach com or call Holt Consulting Rooms, tel: 01263 711712

High Kelling Garden Club

On Monday 9th January, Dr Ian Bedford gave us a thought-provoking talk, “Companion Planting for a Balanced Garden”

Species rich wild habitats, with little human interference, will reach a state of equilibrium as many food chains are formed, starting with a plant, which is eaten by a herbivore, which is then eaten by a carnivore, which is then eaten by another larger carnivore etc , and these chains will interact to form complex food webs Removing just one link in a chain can affect the whole ecosystem

However, as gardeners, we don’t want our gardens running totally wild, so we have to think about making them as species diverse as possible while keeping them aesthetically pleasing If a garden is going to achieve a balance, we cannot afford to totally eradicate any species, and this means learning to tolerate a small level of damage or untidiness

Bear in mind that the 23 million gardens in the UK cover a greater area than all our nature reserves and yet, in the last 70 years, we have lost over 50% of our native species, more than any other developed nation

“Companion planting ” is the practice of planting two or more plants together for mutual benefit This could result in controlling or deterring pests, attracting pollinators and therefore increasing yields. There have been many publications recommending specific plant combinations, e g , Alliums (onion family) to control pests in cabbage crops, but these cannot be scientifically tested and endorsed as there are far too many variables to consider - temperature, moisture, shade, soil type and fertility and varieties selected to name but a few! Far better to research the literature, pick a couple of combinations you think might suit you and give them a try Keep your trial areas small and mix the plants together rather than plant them in rows The time to plan is during the winter as there is little point introducing a companion plant once the other is established and facing difficulties Observe your trial patch closely - there is always the chance your companion plant may attract a new pest!

But, before you give up and reach for the pesticide sprays, remember that these will also affect your beneficial invertebrates, including the millions you can’t see in the soil Building a balanced ecosystem takes time and patience, so reach for a cup of tea instead!

Dr. Ian Bedford was chief entomologist at the John Innes Institute in Norwich and now contributes to The Garden Party on Radio Norfolk, Saturdays between 12-2pm

1st Holt Scout Group

From the vantage point of 2023 it is good to look back at 2022 to see what we as a Group accomplished in the final months of the year.

The Beaver Section visited Holt Fire Station and learnt about fire safety, they carried out programs where they learnt about disability awareness, camped overnight at the Scout Headquarters with the Scout Troop, they did an autumn woodland exploration at Blickling Hall Estate and also went to Holt Country Park.

The Cub Pack also visited The Lowes, took part in science themed evenings, basic map reading skills, hiked round parts of Sheringham Park, had campfires, visited Holt Library and most earned their Book Readers badge, they also learned about their local community, had a desert island survival week and did some pioneering. At Christmas they had a treasure hunt through Holt Town looking for our group logo that shop keepers had hidden in their window displays while enjoying the lights

During the summer holidays four of our Scouts went to the Kent International Jamboree where, together with scouts from Christchurch in Dorset (their Group Scout Leader is a friend of ours) they joined in 8 days of fun and adventures with 3,700 other scouts and Guides from across the UK and worldwide plus 1,500 Leaders

The Troop meanwhile enjoyed Arts and Crafts activities, to part in a District Runabout Quiz; ran team games up on Spouts Hill; and took part in a Navigation Hike. They went over to join Mundesley Scout Troop for a weekend camp in October; were joined by the Beaver Scouts on their weekend Remembrance Weekend Camp Throughout the autumn they have also been taking part in a cookery course, as a result of which all those taking part achieved their Chef ’s Badge

As a Group we took part in the celebrations of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee and many of our members achieved the Norfolk Platinum Jubilee Challenge that was set by the Lieutenancy of Norfolk to mark the event We took part in the annual Remembrance

Sunday Parade and open-air service We also took part in the Town’s Christmas Lights event as well; during which our Raffle and Tombola Stall raised £460 45p for which we would like to thank everyone who came and supported us by buying tickets and for all of the wonderful businesses and supporters who

donated raffle prizes It is only right that we also thank Duncan Baker MP for nominating us as one of the beneficiaries of his London Marathon Run Our older members have also supported The Venue with many of the events that have been staged there to support members, of all ages from our local community

As you can see, we have been very active not only within our Sections but also within our community and we would like to do much more but to do so we need more adults to help us We have young people on our waiting list who we would be delighted to bring into our Sections but to do so we need more adults to assist us Scouting as an adult is great, we get to have a go at all of the activities that our young people do, and we get the added satisfaction buzz of watching them achieve goals and reach targets that stretch them and teach them what they can do, whilst learning about their local community and their place in it.

If you would like to find out more about Scouting in your local community as an adult, then please get in touch by going to our web page at www 1stholt org uk to find out about all of the options available to you via our contact page

North Norfolk Singer-song Writers Release Much-anticipated First Single!

Cromer ’s acoustic singer-song writing duo, The Browns, are releasing their debut single, ‘Forgive and Forget ’ on 24th February this year

The couple first met in 1977 at a school dance, but lost touch after their first date plans went awry, but they reconnected in 2015, married in 2017 and started writing and singing together the following year

Their distinctive sound developed organically as Annie started adding harmonies to Vernon’s vocals, and it ’s their harmonies and blend of voices that makes their performances distinctive and unique

Their single certainly won’t disappoint their followers as layers of harmony proliferate throughout the song with its poignant theme of suspicion and betrayal in a fragile relationship that is seemingly doomed Sorrow, indignation, and resignation weave their way through the song much like the intertwining vocals and harmonies The theme of helplessness and hopelessness are treated with elegance and sensitivity and the beautiful blend of harmonies only serves to highlight the disharmony in the relationship

The Browns have been regular performers at festivals and folk groups around Norfolk such as Deepdale Festival in Burnham Deepdale, Folk on the Pier in Cromer, Cambridge Folk Club, the Bury Folk Collective, Blakeney Beer and Shanty Festival and at various venues around Norwich They also played at festivals further afield such as Bedford River Festival and Boar ’s Bridge festival

Their songs are already getting significant radio play, but their decision to record an album and release a single is entirely due to the encouragement and support they received from their fans, friends and the audiences they encountered at gigs and performances

An album is planned for the spring, and The Browns will perform some of their album tracks at their upcoming gig for Folk on the Strand in March at the Belfry in Overstrand, where they will be supporting Sally Barker on the first evening of a weekend devoted to showcasing singer-songwriters

In the meantime, you can hear them at folk clubs, venues and events around Norfolk and beyond – follow them on Facebook or check their website for their events diary!

From £895* for a fully fitted electric garage door.

• 2 REMOTE CONTROLS

You can follow The Browns on Facebook www.facebook com/vernonandannie and find out more about them via their website at www thebrownsnorfolk com

No longer a women’s only club. Laser, skin, vein and cosmetic surgery treatments for men.

A recent study at Coltishall Clinic has shown that a third of our patients are now men We offer a range of medical treatments unlike a lot of purely cosmetic clinics.

Men can be just as concerned about their looks as women and how society views them It has seemed the norm for a long time for men to accept that they cannot change things Not anymore, the trend is that more men are coming for a variety of treatments and enjoying the benefits Men want to remain youthful and often want to keep up with their partners (who often introduce them to these treatments or bring them along to appointments )

Here at Coltishall Clinic we understand that men don’t want to give up their masculinity We help to navigate patients through the numerous treatments we offer and to give you the look that you wish to achieve

All our invasive treatments are performed purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in walk-out basis so there is no worry about general anaesthesia and hospitalisation issues

Here is a selection of our treatments for men-

Acne or acne scarring [chemical peels, microdermabrasion, IPL, Lasers]

Fractional co2 laser resurfacing

Masculine facial contouring, cheekbone and jawline enhancement

Shaving bumps, moles, cysts, warts and verrucae removal

Unwanted hair on face, back, chest, legs etc

Rosacea & rhinphyma [ bulbous nose reduction ]

Pigmentation/ broken veins on face

Thread and spider veins

Frown lines, crow ’s feet & wrinkle softening

Ageing face, volume replacement, nose to mouth lines softening etc

Age spots, sun spots and liver spots

Radiofrequency skin tightening

Ultrasound body contouring

Liposuction for face, neck, chin, jowls, man boobs, love handles and many body areas

Face and neck Lift

Hair loss treatments

Varicose veins Laser treatment

We have seen increasing number of men including older men come in for our minimally invasive but very effective surgical options such as a direct brow lift, eyelid surgery or a direct neck lift The beauty of these procedures is that they are relatively simple, uncomplicated procedures that provide great results with no significant recovery period or discomfort.

If you are interested in finding out more about our treatments please log onto www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 01603 736487.

Norfolk Brothers Excel at Swimming Gala

Brothers, Isaac and Noah Buchan made the most of their opportunities at the first weekend of the Norfolk and Suffolk County Championship long distance events held simultaneously at the UEA Sports Park

Isaac swam the Suffolk 1,500m freestyle by swimming thirty lengths of the 50m pool and became Suffolk County Champion as he is currently on loan from North Norfolk Vikings to St Felix School, in Southwold In the race, there was no doubt about the winner as he led the race from the gun, winning by a fifty second margin If that was not enough his winning time of 19:55 36 has qualified him for the next stage when he will compete in four more events at the Regional Championships later in the year There was also a silver medal for Isaac in the 800m freestyle with a creditable 10:19 32

Meanwhile his younger brother Noah did win his respective 800m in what was a very exciting head-to-head race with James O'Toole of the City of Norwich Club Spectators had to wait until the last 50m before there was any sign of a leader The Viking just edged ahead and held on winning in a Regional Qualifying Time of 11:32 92 from 11 36 05 recorded by James in the Norfolk race

"I planned my attack when I went into the last turn Then I felt like I couldn't breathe, and I could no longer see James, but I knew I just had to keep going!" remarked the determined new Norfolk County Champion after the race

However, the positions were reversed in the 1,500m when James won in 22:43 12 giving Noah the silver in 24:19 28 respectively

Isaac aged 14 and Noah 12, who live in Beeston, will now have a busy schedule in the next few weeks along with 19 other Vikings who have also qualified for the County Championships

Vikings train at the Victory Pool, North Walsham and at Sheringham Reef

From

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As mentioned last time Duncan Baker came to see us on 6th January with his delightful daughters They were able to see the three timid cats, Frankie, Ella and Cassie who unfortunately hid up as they are not used to seeing so many new faces at once Although the cats in care were not happy to socialize, Ozzy, one of Caroline’s cats came out to see us Unfortunately, Caroline was not well enough to join as she had a nasty bug so Ray, her husband, who enjoys socialising the cats, stood in for her As none of us wanted to catch the bug it was not possible to offer refreshments to our guests We hope the girls were not too disappointed and that they will be able to come back another time when there are some cuddly kittens in care.

Charlie, the other cat in residence had originally tested positive to FELV His bloods had been forwarded to Glasgow for additional testing and much to our relief had recently been advised by our vets that these tests had given a negative result This means that we can now take another cat in to the adjoining pen.

During January we said farewell to Wallace and Narla who hardly had time to settle in her pen and have welcomed on board, Jacob, Juniper, Reggie, Jasmine, Socks, Jodie and Jemima Although it is lovely to see the cats leave for loving new homes it is just as well there are new faces to take their place.

Once again Barbara and her lovely team have been to Morrisons in Cromer and raised £132 36 for the cats They will also be at Tesco in Sheringham on 2nd February

Last time, I forgot to mention our volunteers who deal with the other essential work that is undertaken, such as Irene who looks after the neutering line, Jan who issues the vouchers for people who take advantage of the neutering campaign, Bren who looks after the website and our Facebook page and Sue who completes the “cat-a-log ” records of all cats that come into care and are re-homed We also welcome new volunteer Gill who is taking over some of my duties

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher) This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries The number also applies for those wishing to the advantage of our special neutering campaign

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858 Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website,

February

February came this morning; Winter ’s dog let off its lead, Bounding like a beast of the wild, Grateful to be freed.

It snapped at my fingers, Jumped on my toes; Darting around me, Pulling my clothes…

Suddenly the sun appeared, And called the dog to heel, The warmth of its smile

Upon my face, Was so very good to feel.

www northwalsham cats org uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home. We are on Facebook You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

The end of Ground Rent for tenants?

Ground rent is a type of rent paid by the tenant of a leasehold property to the landlord or freeholder It is a yearly fee that is paid in addition to the rent paid for the property itself.

Historically, ground rent has been a common feature of leasehold properties, with landlords charging tenants a fee for the right to use the land on which their property sits

However, in recent years, the practice of charging ground rent has come under scrutiny Many have criticized the practice as being unjust and exploitative, with tenants paying exorbitant fees for the right to live in their own homes As a result, there have been calls for the abolition of ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties

The government has responded to these calls by introducing the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act, which effectively abolishes ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties, by capping all new leases to a maximum ground rent of £0 per year

The new law, which came into effect in June 2022, means that landlords will no longer be able to charge ground rent on new leases of leasehold properties. While existing leaseholders will only benefit from this reform if they choose to extend their lease, otherwise they will be obliged to pay ground rent until the agreed review date

From the tenant's perspective, the abolition of ground rent is a positive development The reform will help to reduce the financial burden on those who are struggling to afford housing and will help to make housing more affordable and accessible for new tenants.

From the landlord's perspective, the abolition of ground rent may have negative consequences Ground rent is a source of income for landlords and freeholders, and its abolition could impact their ability to maintain and improve the properties they own Some landlords argue that ground rent is a necessary part of the leasehold system, as it ensures that tenants have a vested interest in the property and are more likely to take care of it Few reports suggest that landlords and freeholders may look to compensate for the loss of ground rent by raising the price of their property

The new law will also cap ground rent to a maximum of £0 per year on all retirement properties and this change is expected to come into force no earlier than April 2023

In conclusion, the abolition of ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties is a complex issue with both positive and negative consequences On the one hand, it will help to make housing more affordable and accessible for tenants, as well as reduce the financial burden on those who are struggling to afford housing While on the other hand, it may have negative consequences for landlords and freeholders, and could lead to an increase in

property prices

It is essential that freeholders and leaseholders understand the implications of the reform and seek advice accordingly
