On the subject of art, do come into the Venue to see the amazing, fused glass artwork that has been created by the Holt Primary School, working with their Artist in Residence Debbie Burton. It is displayed in the entrance hall and Lounge area for everyone to enjoy, and we are thrilled to be able to have it with us for the summer Well done to all the pupils for some truly stunning art We have a fairly quiet August now in terms of extra events, although Bingo will still be on, and we have the East Angles Brass Band coming in early September to liven things up with some superb live music We are so pleased to welcome back the Holt Probus to the Venue, who are now coming once a month for their lunch and meetings, and who have been kind enough to join us in helping us to transport people to various groups in the centre It's this sort of generous cooperation that really is the beating heart of our Community Centre.

News from the Venue It ’s been an exciting July with a wonderfully curated art exhibition from the Institute of East Anglian Artists which attracted many visitors and the fabulous Holt Festival events with record audiences attending (we even had to borrow chairs, many thanks Gresham's School!) It ’s great to see the town coming alive again and to see the arts so well supported and attended We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic Festival in our town, and huge congratulations to Anwen Hurt and the superb committee who plan and run it every year, plus the wonderful team of volunteers who make all the events run like clockwork

• Check the weather and tide times.

ENJOY YOUR TIME AT THE COAST STAY SAFE

• Contact the lifeguards or police and keep them informed

Always go with someone else when you go into or near water Friends or family can help in an emergency

• Find a safe place to go • Be able to swim and float Stay close to a friend or family member

To me, the sea is a continual miracle; the fishes that swim, the rocks, the motion of the waves, the ships with men in them. What stranger miracles are there? Walt Whitman

• Plan for your activity

• follow the lifeguards' advice

Stay Safe

• If you're in trouble in a rip current: If you can stand, walk, don’t swim. If you have a board or inflatable, you should keep hold of it to help you float Raise your hand and shout for help Never try and swim against the rip or you'll get exhausted Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it then make for shore Our advice for tidal cut off:

• Unexpected waves can quickly sweep people off their feet, even on a calm day Keep an eye on the water and don't go too close to the water ’s edge

• Read signs and be aware of local hazards.

• There might be dangers under the water The water is moving water around our coasts and in rivers is always moving

• do not use when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates off shore wind What to do if a child goes missing

• Carry a means of calling for help and keep it protected and attached to you at all times.

• Always carry a means of calling for help on your person Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if you are in danger or you see someone in danger of being cut off by the tide.

• Red flags Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the Red Flag is flying

• do not take out in big waves

The water is powerful: It ’s not what you’re used to in a swimming pool

• The water is colder than you think • The edge can be dangerous.

• Calmly check the surroundings first, ensuring other children remain supervised.

Below you will find hints to help keep you and your family safe Please cut this article out and keep it; it may just save you or your family ’s lives On the beach or any body of water Be prepared

• Rips are strong currents running out to sea that can easily take swimmers out beyond their depth Know what to do if you get caught in one • Tides cause a rise and fall in sea level. Check times of high and low tide so you don't get cut off

• Tell someone else where you’re going and when you’ll be back They can raise the alarm with the coastguard by calling 999 or 112 if you are overdue BEACH SAFETY Know your flags

• Blow up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be blown offshore If you must use them at the beach, then: • ensure children are closely supervised

Following a theme of creature visits to the Age Concern North Norfolk Day Centre, we welcomed two mini donkeys, Pixie and Jack for the afternoon A small corral was set up outside and once their hooves were cleaned of dirt, they came into the centre and were very well behaved Donkeys are the only animals in the world which have a cross on their backs stemming from Biblical times when the lowly donkey carried Jesus into Jerusalem and stood in the shadow of the cross at Calvary Jack’s cross was more obvious than Pixie’s due to her colour. We talk about, ‘Having our cross to bear ’ and we are pleased that offering a day service enables carers to have a little respite from the daily care of their loved ones which we know places additional responsibilities and pressures on their lives We still have places available if you would like to consider coming for a half or whole day, or several days per week and as you can see, we have a lot of interesting activities going on in the centre In addition to the day centre, we deliver hot two course meals Tuesday to Friday to people living at home, covering Cromer to Holt for £5 The meals are cooked in the centre and delivered by our volunteer drivers. We are looking for additional drivers so please contact Alison on 01263 821188 if you are interested in helping in this way Learn more about Noble Live-in Care and how we can help you by visiting our website or speaking with our expert advisors. Some people leave a sum of money to a friend on condition they care for a pet Or a payment might be made to an executor as a ‘thank you’ for administering an estate. Conditional gifts are often referred to as ‘contingent gifts’ as they rely on the occurrence of the specified contingency Conditions may not be met

Many people choose to leave money to young beneficiaries only once they have reached a certain age. This might be, for example, 18, 21, 25, or any other age Making gifts conditional on speculative assumptions, such as making a gift conditional on a grandchild attending university can be risky, as it might be less probable that your grandchild will go to university rather than them simply living until they are 25 Trusts

A conditional gift may also be in the form of a trust It is common for couples who have children from previous relationships to include in their wills a life interest trust for each other Typically, the ultimate aim is for the money, or assets, to pass to their own children after their partner has died. The children, therefore, are the recipients of a gift which is conditional upon the death of the partner Advantages of conditional giving Gifts which are conditional upon the beneficiary reaching a certain age may protect an inheritance, as many parents and grandparents share the view that their children would be less likely to make sensible investments with their inheritance at 18 than they might at 25.

information,

A gift attached to a less probable condition should be made with extra caution, and you should always give thought to the possibility that the condition may never happen and how you would like the gift to be distributed if the condition is not met.

A gift which is conditional on a beneficiary’s divorce, if the relationship is already rocky, ensures that your assets do not end up in the hands of a loved one’s ex spouse

Many gifts made in a will simply allow the recipient of the gift to receive their money, or other assets, outright once you have died. A conditional gift is one which the recipient will only receive if a certain condition is met The condition might be contingent on the death of a beneficiary For example, if money is left to a son, daughter, or sibling, you may want to make sure that it passes to their children if they were to die

Alternatively, the condition could be something which is not guaranteed You might want to leave money to a grandchild, but only if they obtain a certain qualification or attend university You may want to leave them a car on condition that they pass their driving test

Dear Friends, The Church in the Parish is home to a community of faith to which a growing number of people feel that they want to belong to and over the years I have tried to make it as such. It has been said that belonging often comes before believing and we try to make the church a community where people feel welcome and at home, regard less of where they are on their personal journey Everyone is welcome to join us for worship and prayer and for friendship and fellowship at our social events We not only pray together, we eat and drink togther, which all helps to build a strength of community.

LITTLE LAMB’S PARENT & TODDLER GROUP meets every Wednesday during term time 9 30am 11 00am in the Parish Church Hall in Street Hall. All parents/carers are welcome to come along and meet with friends and make new ones.

Holy Matrimony: (correction with apologies) 16th

The celebrations in Holt for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee back in June and more recently the Holt Festival, also demonstrate the value and strength of community which exists in the parish. Holt cetainly did Her Majesty proud and the Holt Festival provided us with an explosion of art, music, and literature There was something for everyone and and there was great buzz around this year ’s festival, not least at the Parish Church which welcomed over 4000 visitors, to view the art exhibitions, to enjoy a wide range of concerts, to engage in creative children’s activities and to partake of delcious food and drink It is great that so many people are committed to serving the community and to adding value to the quality of our lives here in North Norfolk Everyone involved in making these significant community events happen are to be congratulated and thanked.

Likewise, the large number of community groups that exist in the Parish, such as the Holt Youth Project, TreeHouse Café, the Venue, Scouts, Guides, Holt Caring Society, Rotary, Holt Society, Greening Holt, and the Holt and District Dementia Support Group, (apologies if I have miised out anyone) also demonstrate the value of community and that sense of belonging which is vitally important if a community is to flourish I very much hope that we can all build on that community spirit which was clearly demonstrated over the sum mer and continue to work together to create and sustain a com munity in which people not only want to live but more importantly want to belong to!

On the Thursday of Holt Festival

A fabulous experience Phil and Polly Barrett 5G in Holt Dear Jo, Original source: niche tech website ISPReview co uk I was very surprised to see Holt on the list, I wonder if someone who works for Three has a second home in Holt! Apparently, mobile network "Three" has announced that they are turning on 5G signal in Holt, which I think is the first 5G available in North Norfolk. This means that visitors to Holt can get a faster data signal (if they have a modern phone), and also residents can now get higher speed internet for their home via 5G Three has started sales of 5G home internet packages on their website, and the Three coverage map shows what parts of Holt can get a good 5G signal, and potentially faster speeds than are available across most of Holt It's not yet clear whether other mobile providers that use the "Three" network (e g , SMARTY, ID Mobile) will also offer 5G right away (it will be a commercial decision). Three shares a mobile mast with EE (off the Hempsted Road), but EE has not yet announced 5G availability for Holt (and VMO2 and Vodafone, who share a different mast on the Thaxters site, do not offer 5G at the moment in Holt)

Please note: The views expressed in this column are not necessarily the views of the editor or publishers of The Holt Chronicle but those of the author's submitting the material Welcome Wheels Dear Jo, A BIG THANKYOU for all your publicity We have had a splendid response to our call for bicycles with the resulting 39 bikes being loaded up from the Quaker Meeting House on Thursday and taken to Norwich (bicyclelinks.org.uk/socialprojects) Here, they will be cleaned, and any necessary repairs done before being handed to Asylum seekers and refugees in the city North Norfolk Amnesty Group are supporting the “Welcome Wheels” project which provides second hand, refurbished bikes for refugees and asylum seekers in Norwich They are used to give essential access to work, school and English Classes as well as offering freedom to travel around our lovely county They are handed over together with protective helmets and all recipients are given road safety training For the last three days the Quaker Meeting House in Wells next the Sea has been receiving bikes. Generous members of the public read the newspaper articles and heard a broadcast on Monday morning on BBC radio Norfolk which resulted on the first day with 19 bikes being handed over Some folk stayed to tell their ‘back story ’ as to why they were donating the bike, while enjoying homemade cakes and coffee Others drew up with a trailer full of bikes and then left The grand total of bikes delivered was 36, with 3 more waiting to be picked up, making a grand total of 39 Joolz Saunders, Wells next the Sea Out of Adversity

Yours Sincerely Miles Thomas Bank Hub Dear Jo Can I please, through your column, ask anyone interested, to urge Mr Duncan Baker to encourage the Post Office opening in Budgens to become a Bank Hub, which will be able to provide several banking facilities Also, could he be encouraged to push for the installation of an ATM there, as when Barclays close the town will be without any of the above facilities mentioned Name & address supplied Joolz Saunders

the internationally best selling author Marian Keyes, sadly recovering from Covid, was unable to be with us at The Venue to take part in a conversation with Chris Gribble (CEO of the National Centre for Writing, based in Norwich) It was bravely decided to conduct the interview by Zoom Sadly, many decided to stay away but the audience who did attend experienced a wonderfully inclusive and mesmerising interview Conducted by Chris on a lap top, Marian, despite feeling below par, was able to answer questions, with a her customary charismatic and animated presence which over flowed, larger than life, on the centre’s cinema screen for us, the audience, to share Chris, no stranger to interviewing for the Holt Festival and a long time reader of Marian’s books, immediately established a warm and easy rapport with her, and we as audience, because of the technology, strangely felt as if we were being treated to an intimate conversation, writ engagingly large Huge congratulations to the Festival team and the Venue, for responding with imagination and courage to such a problem. Not only did they make this occasion far from a poor alternative a huge success but it suggests that other interviews and conversations could be ambitiously planned on Zoom in the future, with subjects we could never hope to bring, in person, to Holt I can only add that it was such a shame that many missed not only one of the great events of this Festival but one that ranks as one of the best of any year up there with Anwen Hurt ’s conversation with Nigel Havers!

Tblsp tomato puree A small handful of black olives, sliced in half 1 ball mozzarella cheese, sliced Fresh basil leaves Method

Italian Summer Tart 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped A few sundried tomatoes from a jar, plus a little of the oil Flat tsp dried oregano 1 tin chopped tomatoes 2 tsp red or green pesto

return

Simple Summer Supper

Start with the tomato sauce: gently fry the onion and garlic in a little of the oil for about 5 minutes until becoming soft and then add the herbs and sundried tomatoes Heat through and add the tinned tomatoes and pesto and thicken with the puree Simmer for about 10 minutes and then check seasoning Whizz up with a hand blender until smooth and set aside. Preheat the oven to 200°. Unroll the pastry but leave on the wrapper that it came in, and place onto a flat baking sheet Measure in about an inch from the edge and score all the way around, not cutting through to the bottom but just marking it this will be your edge and all the filling will be in the middle Spoon on some tomato sauce and spread around the tart, not going over the scored area (tip: don’t use too much as you will end up with a soggy tart). Scatter over the olives and the mozzarella and place in the oven for around 30 minutes, or until the edges are starting to brown and have puffed up, and the filling is bubbling and hot Scatter over the fresh basil or some rocket and serve immediately with a fresh summer salad

Never underestimate the genius and versatility of ready made puff pastry; not only is it incredibly economical to buy (Lidl version is only 85p!) but it also keeps well in the fridge, and you can make so many delicious and quick dishes from it in no time at all I do prefer to make my own pastry when I have the time, but puff pastry is a bit of a rat race to make, and this ready made does taste delicious in the summer, there are just so many other things to be doing! I have shared this recipe as it is such a good looking dish to take along to barbeques, friends suppers, or just to serve the family, but it won’t break the bank. This is the basic simple recipe, but feel free to switch it up and scatter over any toppings you like, such as salami, roasted veg or garlic mushrooms I use the ready rolled pastry for extra convenience, which comes wrapped in its own grease proof paper, so you can just unroll it and leave it in there on your baking tray, what could be easier? The recipe doesn’t use all the tomato sauce, so you can stir that through some pasta another day bonus!

Vanilla Butter Biscuits Ingredients 200g softened butter 200g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/paste 1 large egg, beaten 400g plain flour 100g chocolate chips (optional) You will need 2 baking trays lined with baking paper and a 6cm round cutter Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4 Method Cream the butter, vanilla and sugar together in a large bowl (use a mixer if you have one but you can use a wooden spoon and lots of elbow grease) until light and fluffy, mix in the egg and chocolate chips if using, sift in the flour and mix to a dough (on slow speed if using a mixer or bring together with your hands) Split the dough in two and flatten into 2 discs, wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill in the fridge for at least 30mins When chilled, roll each disc out to about 3mm thickness and cut out discs and place on the baking sheets about 2 3cm apart. Bake in the oven for 9 10 mins or until golden brown Allow to cool on the baking trays for 5 10 mins then lift the biscuits onto a cooling rack carefully and leave to go cold

All there is to do now is select your choice of ice cream, take 2 biscuits, place a dollop of ice cream on one biscuit, sandwich together with another and enjoy! Jo Editor

Mike sadly passed away in 2013 and two years later his wife, Marion, also died, leaving their daughter Michelle to continue their work and develop the business Michelle is passionate about continuing her parents’ legacy and keeping her flour production as local as possible She has named the new tearoom in their honour and plans to have a mural in the tearoom telling the story of the Mill’s history since it came into the family ’s possession The Mill also offers tours to see how the flour is produced, milling takes place 3 or 4 times a week, depending on water levels in the river There is also Mill Antiques and Braconte on site if you fancy browsing bygones when you visit The Mill is open Monday to Saturday 10am 3pm For more information visit: letheringsettwatermill co uk or tel: 01263 713153

From Mill to Plate Letheringsett Watermill has undergone something of a transformation recently and is now offering coffee and cake as well as producing and selling their well known flour Thurlow ’s Tea Room opened its doors at Easter replacing the Village Shop which was housed in the Mill. Owner Michelle along with her partner, David and staff have been working hard to convert the ground floor of the Mill into a welcome space where visitors can enjoy a coffee or tea with homemade cakes made by friend Angela from Dereham A viewing window has been installed in the tearoom where the Mill’s spur wheel can be seen working when milling is taking place

There are also tables outside where visitors can sit by the River Glaven and enjoy the view Michelle is keen to source ingredients and produce as locally as possible Grain is sourced within North Norfolk and her flour is supplied to local bakeries and shops The Mill now produces 15 different flours David, a joiner, is in the process of installing a kitchen area where Michelle is planning to produce baked goods, made with her own flour, to other businesses in the area, including sausage rolls using pork raised on David’s farm in Bodham

Letheringsett Watermill is one of only 24 water driven flour mills in the country, a rare one at that, as unlike other mills which are run as historical trusts or by local authorities, Letheringsett is one of only 3 independent mills The Mill was leased in 1987 by Michael Thurlow, Michelle’s father, with a view to restoring it back to its former glory Mike was not a miller by trade but researched the process of producing flour and, after much time, money and extensive restoration, production resumed and continues to this day.

Chief Executive, Mark Dowie said: ‘We are delighted to honour Prince Philip’s longstanding commitment to maritime services and lifetime of support to Her Majesty the Queen, who has been our Patron since 1952 Building lifeboats and lifesaving equipment is something we do every day, but each lifeboat marks a very meaningful moment in history. For crews they are welcoming a new boat which will help our lifesavers work towards saving everyone For RNLI supporters, they will know this lifeboat is launching in memory of so many loved ones every time she receives the call for help ’ Her Majesty the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have a long history with the RNLI. Her Majesty has been Patron of the lifesaving charity since 1952 and The Duke of Edinburgh became a member of the Council in 1972 Together, they visited several RNLI lifeboat stations over the years In a nod to The Duke of Edinburgh’s proud naval career during which he was Commanding Officer of HMS Magpie, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales attached a magpie engraved plate to the Wells lifeboat in June last year.

The Lifeboat Fund ’ Duke of Edinburgh is the 53rd lifeboat to be funded by the generosity of civil servant donations to The Lifeboat Fund as part of the Civil Service charity ’s 150th anniversary appeal

Co-administration of both vaccines is a safe and efficient method of vaccination. Patients can attend these clinics and decline to have one or the other of the vaccines, however, we would encourage patients to have both vaccines as we will not be holding separate catch-up clinics at a later date.

Care Home and Housebound Patients - The Surgery will ensure that all care home and housebound patients are offered both the Flu and Covid vaccinations in early October.

Like many stories there are elements of truth but intertwined some claims that Isaac Newton would have found a bit of a stretch However, it remains a good story, doesn’t it?

What do you call a monk who walks everywhere in bare feet, has poor bone density and really bad breath? A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

The Italian Flying Monk By David Abbott.

It remains hard to separate fact from fiction No evidence exists for Leibniz ever seeing him fly That would have been tricky because the only time he was in Italy was 27 years after the Saint ’s death As to the story about the Saint trying to levitate on his deathbed, the doctor who attended made no reference to any such event

Hundreds of witnesses claimed to have seen him levitating and flying around Puglia with almost casual abandon He got airborne on at least 70 occasions while offering mass or praying And without filing a single flight plan Even on his deathbed he was alleged to have made a feeble attempt to take off

© copyright: this article may not be reproduced without the express permission of the author.

Eventually he got a job as a servant at the local Franciscan monastery There he began to change, started to pray more and eventually entered the order. It was then he began to work miracles and the alleged levitations started St Joseph was canonised by Pope Clement XIII and is now the patron saint of air travelers, pilots and (yes) astronauts! A biographer once claimed he was seen “to fly into the air backwards in a kneeling position.” An early example of reverse thrust?

Now enter a fellow called Leibniz Probably the only Leibniz you know is a yummy chocolate biscuit. But this man was certainly no mere snack. Gottfried Leibniz was, like his contemporary Newton, a scientist researching gravitation So curious was Leibniz in the tale of this flying holy man that it was said he made a pilgrimage to see for himself It is claimed he witnessed one of the monk’s flights. If he did, it must have puzzled him greatly because it contravenes the Newtonian laws of gravity, which definitely precludes human beings flying around unaided They should not be able to do more than make a little hop up before gravity does its worst But is all this true? Well this much we know: he did exist but didn’t exactly aspire during his early life It is said his mother often considered him a nuisance He was ham fisted, a slow learner, absent minded and had a bad temper So, not exactly the most popular kid on the block

Almost certainly you won’t have heard of St Joseph of Cupertino who lived in Italy around the time of Isaac Newton (1643 1727) I wouldn’t blame you for saying “so what?” But if I tell you he was called The Flying Monk that might cause you to pause for a moment

Chickens love to forage under bushes Simulate this for your birds by using a child’s play tunnel with treats hidden in it to give them some fun while foraging Give them some logs and tree stumps to sit on These are especially useful in winter when the ground is cold as it gives your birds chance to warm their feet.

Pet chickens make fantastic pets and they love toys and puzzles, writes Brydy Crane Here are some ideas for activities to brighten your chicken’s day! Hang a whole cabbage or a few fresh corn on the cob from the roof of the run and let them peck away. Make a dust bath using an old tyre Fill with earth, diatomaceous earth (to combat mites) and a selection of herbs such as mint, parsley, sage, oregano, pot marigolds, thyme, fennel, monarda (bee balm). There are many other herbs that are suitable take a look on Google! Make a climbing frame out of logs and branches Be sure to clean well first with soapy water to prevent the spread of any diseases from wild birds to your flock Hang a parrot mirror in the run. They love their own reflections! Chickens love to swing! Make a chicken sized swing using a branch or piece of wood and rope String up fruit and veg, your chickens will love trying to peck at them Teach your chickens an instrument! Your chicks will love pecking at a child’s xylophone strung up to the side of their enclosure Hide some vegetable treats around the run and let them seek it out! Half fill a washing up bowl with water and float some pieces of veg on the top of the water for the hens to dip for! Recycle a plastic bottle by making holes in it and filling it with corn When the chickens peck the bottle some corn will fall out and your chick will get a treat!

Fresh sprouted greens are a nutritious source of food for our chickens Your chickens will soon eat them up, but you can protect the tender sprouts with a simple wire frame Now, your chickens can enjoy weeks of grazing without any resowing work needed

Chicken enrichment for your home flock

Art Group This year ’s Summer Exhibition, which Bette started and organised annually at Weybourne Village Hall, where we always meet on a Friday morning, will be displaying a vast selection of her watercolours for sale Some are already framed and ready to hang; others mounted and many smaller sketches, to suit all tastes Many signed, but all original and most of local Norfolk scenes

The Coastal Art Group Summer Exhibition in Memory of Bette Hodgson The Coastal Art Group will be thinking of Bette Hodgson this summer as, after three years absence, it sets up at Weybourne Village Hall for its Summer Exhibition over the August Bank Holiday weekend August 26th, 27th and 28th. This, usually annual event, provides an opportunity for members of the group to exhibit their work, much of which is available to purchase We hope you can join us at some time over the weekend, especially as this year, it is held in memory of the Coastal Art Group’s Founder, Bette Hodgson Sadly, Bette, who set up the group over 15 years ago died at the end of May after a short illness and only a few days away from her 91st birthday. Her service at Cromer Crematorium was well attended by Coastal Art Group members, family and friends, and members of the Weybourne Village Hall Management Committee on which Bette served for many years as a Committee member and Trustee Bette was a prolific watercolour painter of local Norfolk scenes and had drawn since childhood Bette lived in Bodham, until moving into care and up until a short while before Covid struck, she would drive around the local lanes and villages, stopping to sketch the scenes before her A pastime which gave her great pleasure. Bette didn’t ‘teach’ the Group but would offer small but significant suggestions and words of ‘artistic wisdom’ to improve member ’s work and help members develop their skill Only in the last year did she find herself less able to paint She is remembered with fondness by all, but in particular by the Costal

Grace Johnson, Hedgehog Officer, Hedgehog Street explains: “Hedgehogs are a much loved native species, and helping them, particularly in urban areas, is easy and affordable We want to encourage people to get creative this summer think about front and back gardens, as a street with five houses on could be part of a 20 gar den ‘Hedgehog Street ’ Tunnels could join gardens, or ramps can be placed between gardens on different levels. We know gardens can be havens for hedgehogs, but only if they ’re connected to let hedgehogs in and out ” Hedgehogs were listed as ‘vulnerable to extinction’ on the Red List for Britain’s Mammals 2020 And, earlier this year, BHPS and PTES published the State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report which revealed that hedgehog populations have continued to decline in rural areas nationally since 2000, with some areas experiencing a loss of up to 75% Thankfully, the picture is more positive in urban areas, with some populations even appearing to be recovering The reasons for the decline are complex, but two of the main pressures hedgehogs face in both rural and urban areas are lack of suitable habitat and habitat fragmentation For top tips on how to help hedgehogs wherever you live, visit www hedgehogstreet org Grace Johnson, Hedgehog Officer, Hedgehog Street adds: “We already have over 112,000 amazing Hedgehog Champions across the UK, but more help is always needed We hope lots of people will talk with their neighbours and to gether help their local hedgehogs this summer.” To find out more, or to enter your Hedgehog Street, visit www.hedgehogstreet.org / biggest hedgehog street And, for inspiration and ideas of ways to help, keep an eye on BHPS (@hedgehogsociety) & PTES (@PTES)’ social media channels, and follow #BiggestHedgehogStreet

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society and People’s Trust for Endangered Species, who together run nationwide campaign Hedgehog Street, are urging people to connect as many gardens in their area as possible This will allow local hedgehogs to roam between them in search of food, mates and nesting materials a small action vital for the species’ long term survival. The idea is simple: become a ‘Hedgehog Champion’ and connect as many gardens as possible via ‘Hedgehog Highways’ (a 13cm or CD case sized square gap under garden fences or walls), and then submit your entry online Free dedicated invitations for Hedgehog Champions to share with neighbours explaining the idea, and window posters highlighting Hedgehog Highways, are also available online

The highest number of gardens linked will be crowned ‘Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street ’ , with prizes including special Hedgehog Highway plaques and a hamper packed with hedgehog themed goodies. Prizes will be on offer for those on smaller streets too, so tell PTES and BHPS all about your Hedgehog Street even if you’re not sure if it ’s big enough to win think community effort, creative solutions and decorated Hedgehog Highways! Anyone can take part, from families and summer school groups to university students and professionals Existing ‘Hedgehog Streets’ can also enter, though expansion is recommended The search for ‘Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street ’ will run over the summer holidays until Saturday 10th September Throughout the summer, PTES and BHPS will be sharing hints, tips and examples on their social media channels, where the winner will be announced at the end of September.

Search for Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street Begins Public asked to help hedgehogs by connecting as many gardens as possible and submitting entries online Two wildlife charities are asking members of the public to link their gardens this summer in a bid to help hedgehogs and find ‘Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street ’

Mr Allen said that recent accolades had shown the input of the line’s volunteers is recognised and valued beyond the railway and congratulated the volunteer team on receiving the Queens Award for Voluntary Service which was announced at the Platinum Jubilee weekend in June. He also revealed the railway had recently been assessed by Visit England and accredited as a quality assured visitor attraction, with the assessor ’s report highlighting the excellent staff and volunteers with a score of 98% in that section In his address to shareholders, Managing Director, Hugh Harkett, said that after a difficult start 2021 had been outstanding The Culture Recovery Fund grant from the DCMS kept the business afloat during lockdown and then the strategy of survive recover sustain had been implemented with the first two parts being achieved during the year Since year end good progress has been made on sustaining the railway with healthy passenger numbers for the first part of the 2022 season Mr Harkett stressed that generating cash surpluses is vital to allow the railway to invest in repairs and renewals track work to replaces points at Weybourne is likely to cost £250,000 this winter and it is important to build up reserves to cover locomotive and carriage overhauls He also indicated that the line was reaching a position to look at future improvements such as reinstating the buildings on Platform 2 at Sheringham but that to afford that, it would be necessary to launch an appeal probably later this year The meeting coincided with the start of the railway ’s peak summer season which sees at least nine return trips every day operating along 5½ miles of restored track from Sheringham to Weybourne and Holt. Almost all the tasks necessary to run the trains being carried out by a team of around 300 dedicated volunteers Full details can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

Winnie Browne Rosa Sadler

Another junior, Rasvan Platon also demonstrated his improving ability and although not in the top three he still went 44 08 in the 50m freestyle and 48 37 the 50n backstroke respectively

Reuben Seaman is swimming exceptionally well and for the last three outings he has developed somewhat of a Midas touch by achieving golds in all three Thetford was no exception when he captured no fewer than five gold medals The 9 year old took a huge 18 seconds off his 200m freestyle when he hit the pad in 3:35 71 His elder sister Esme achieved a double silver in the 100m backstroke in 1:34 91 and in the 50m butterfly she went 51 28 respectively. As expected, sibling rivalries between twin brothers, George and Zak Edridge were rejuvenated and in an exciting 200m breaststroke, Zak took the bronze medal in 3:56 34 at the expense of his brother's agonising disqualification Thetford's Roger Britcher was the worthy winner of the event in 3:33 38 However, George was not deterred by this and reverting to freestyle over 100m he won gold in 1:17 52 as the two 12 year olds took home no fewer than 5 medals between them Vikings won 13 Golds 7 Silvers and 11 Bronze medals "Our junior swimmers have progressed beyond all expectations recently as more youngsters continue to join our development squad " remarked Sam Watts lead coach to the Vikings John Holden To join Vikings visit them on info@norfolkvikings.co.uk

First Medals for Winnie & Rosa North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club enjoyed more success across the age range at recent Gala in Thetford Patience and diligence were finally rewarded when 11 year old Winnie Browne got her very first medal for the club when she won the bronze over 50m backstroke with 46 15 However, she did not have to wait long for her second medal as it followed almost immediately: this time a silver in the 50m freestyle in 41 02 which was a well deserved double reward It was then the turn of Rosa Sadler aged 10, as more junior success followed Rosa along with 11 year old Bailee Beighton, achieved a bronze medal each. Rosa of Sheringham, went 47.16 for 50m freestyle and Bailee in the 100m backstroke finished with 1:48 71 respectively

Our new larger Shop is free to enter and has many wonderful Gifts for all the family. Redwings is proud to announce the charity has taken on Anna Sewell House the birthplace of the Black Beauty author in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The building is owned by a Redwings supporter and horse owner who approached Redwings about occupying the property The biggest horse sanctuary in the UK was founded in the county and continues to have its headquarters in Hapton, south of Norwich Gemma Walpole, Executive Director for Income and Engagement at Redwings, said: “It ’s so important to the owner that the property be used in a way that ’s a fitting legacy to Anna and her work to improve horse welfare, so it makes perfect sense for it to be a showcase for the work Redwings does today “Black Beauty is one of the most successful novels of all time with over 50 million copies sold worldwide and was one of the first to use an animal as a narrator. Anna didn’t write the novel for children. She said that her purpose was to ‘induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses’

Black Beauty was the only book that Anna Sewell published She died shortly after the novel was released in 1877, and never witnessed its enormous success or the influence it had on changes to horse welfare in Victorian Britain

Meanwhile, Mars, Fairtrade and ECOOKIM a collection of cocoa farming co operatives in Côte d’Ivoire have announced plans to deepen their partnership, through an innovative $10m programme to raise farmer incomes. The group is proud of the fact that Sheringham is a Fairtrade town and encourages all commercial enterprises, as well as the general public, to shop Fairtrade as much as possible Look out for the Fairtrade logo when out shopping

The ‘Fairtrade for Sheringham’ group attended Aldborough Village Fayre and Gresham Methodist Church’s Strawberry Tea & Fayre during June and July The tombola was very popular which drew attention to the many Fairtrade goods available All such purchases ensure the producers of commodities such as bananas, tea, coffee, sugar, dried fruit, chocolate and many more, receive a fair price for their crops This enables them to improve their standard of living as well as enabling a more sustainable use of land to take place. Recently, new Fairtrade products from Guylian, Quirky Chocolate and Beech's have joined the long list of chocolatey treats to try out!

They ’ve learned all

Jo, one of the captains and a member of the fundraising team at North Norfolk Hockey Club said: ‘We're fundraising to buy a shipping container to hold crucial training equipment and get away from it turning up in the back of a car There are lots of ways you can help us reach our target and make this project a reality! You can make a pledge or help spread the word and tell the world to get behind us. Local businesses can get involved too by offering rewards and donating things we can offer our supporters But we only have 4 weeks to secure the match funding from England Hockey and the countdown is on! Follow the link and watch the video for more information' The hockey season starts in September along with club training, Tuesday evenings for adults and girls’ development and Wednesday evenings for juniors With 3 men’s, two women’s and a girls development team for under 15’s, a thriving Junior Section with hockey sessions, tournaments and matches for u10’s and u12’s, boys and girls there’s something for everyone. find out more visit our website North Norfolk Hockey Club , email us northnorfolkhockey@gmail.com or find us local artist, Eddie Goodridge (IEA) - 29 August 2022 Village Hall, Quay Lane, Morston (NR25 7DJ) 9 am - 6 pm Trust car about exciting female explorers like the pilot Amelia Earhart, they ’ve made sun dials, they ’ve learned how to recognise landmarks on a walk, and they ’ve travelled to many different countries with their teddies! We’ve also been on an exploration to Kelling Heath Holiday Park There we did lots of challenges like wild art pictures, silly walks, Chinese whispers and songs ‘It was really fun,’ as one Rainbow said ‘Do you know my favourite part? Singing Cecil the Caterpillar!’ As the Holt Rainbows team of Jackie, Vikki and Catherine know, running Rainbows is always a lot of fun And that ’s why we want to set up a Brownie unit too And to do that we need more helpers If you’d like to know more, you can email holtrainbows@gmail.com or take a look at the Girlguiding UK website. The NCCS’s mission now is to promote the work of the skilled designer makers in Norfolk and to increase the public awareness of contemporary craft within Norfolk and beyond It does this through staging exhibitions, holding talks, and arranging events that are open to all members. A newsletter is sent to all members bi monthly The Society aims to set, and reflect, high standards in craft works, to explore outlets for selling and opportunities for members to meet socially, as well as to raise public awareness of good design and high quality in small scale production NCCS President Lady Laurel Walpole said : “I have long admired the way NCCS is run by craftspeople, for craftspeople Its achievement in reaching its 50th anniversary, especially after the difficulties of the last two years, is cause for celebration indeed Here’s to the next 50 years ”

Natural skin rejuvenation and PRP for non surgical hair loss treatments at the coltishall cosmetic clinic. If you are a fan of totally natural methods of treatment and not keen on botox, fillers or lasers etc then there is a solution to provide results using your own tissue Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a solution derived from whole blood that is enriched in the platelet fraction. Historically, PRP has been applied to wound beds to promote healing of complex wounds Over the last decade, it has served as a valuable therapeutic tool in various specialties such as maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, orthopaedics and sports medicine In recent years it has been use increasingly in addressing aesthetic medical concerns. We have been using it for last many years when patients asked for it but remained sceptical about claims being made Our patients who had the treatment however reported great satisfaction with it and we are excited about the recent studies that show noticeable results in treatment of hair loss Many published studies show that patient ’s experienced substantial reduction in hair loss, rate of hair loss, improved hair thickness, ease of managing /styling hair, and their hair felt coarser or heavier after the treatment

What methods of PRP application do you offer in the clinic? We offer PRP either as a standalone treatment or in combination with some other treatments such as laser resurfacing or low level laser therapy and some medication in case of hair restoration.

Page

How is PRP treatment carried out? Your own blood is taken mixed with an anticoagulant solution and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood These platelets are rich source of a variety of growth factors, which then stimulate your own collagen or hair follicles to grow based on what is trying to be achieved What it does not do? If you are after a quick fix for example filling out lines and wrinkles PRP does not do that instantly It improves your skin quality and collagen slowly over time It also works on acne scars but treatments take time to show results. So this is not a quick fix. It can help thinning hair but will not grow hair on totally bald scalp either

NCCS held an exhibition at Anteros Arts Foundation, Norwich in May June of this year and the third and final exhibition INSPIRED 2022 at The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral will run from 28th November 11th December

The Salthouse exhibition will feature gorgeous, striking work covering ceramics, jewellery, handmade glass, Letter carving, textiles and woodworking. Formed in 1972, the NCCS set out to encourage and promote the work of artists and craftspeople in East Anglia, and to collect works in ceramics, handmade glass and jewellery Members of its founding committee included Francis Cheetham (Director of Norwich Museums), Robert Fox (Principal of Norwich School of Art), Sheenah Smith (Assistant Keeper of Art, Norwich Museums), and eminent local craftspeople

SALTHOUSE 2022 at St Nicholas Church, Salthouse NR25 7XA, 13th August 29th August is the second exhibition of three exhibitions in 2022 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society

It is only suitable for people who are in good general health without any significant medical concerns or systemic problems If you wish to try this promising new natural treatment for thinning hair or for improving your skin quality using your own growth factors then give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk RailOldThe odele@or 01263 ukcocarefoot 6BS25NRtHold,RoaStation tcare.co.uk@holtfoo 888880 NTMENTOIAPPROU 09:46 1

Bodham and Beckham Village Hall Film Club 7th September 7 00pm: A Ridiculously Comedy “ THE DUKE” 2022 (12) starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery ’s history Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television What happened next became the stuff of legend Only 50 years later did the full story emerge Kempton had spun a web of lies The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale

I want to feel less stressed, more relaxed and sleep better

I want to feel revitalised and relaxed

A deep tissue massage works deeper into the muscles by applying firm pressure to help break down tension and knots within muscle groups and soft tissue It is a deeply relaxing massage bringing relief from aching muscles Helps rejuvenate and strengthen tired muscles

A sports massage can help prevent or repair sports related injury and provide relief from pain while your injury heals. It is a corrective massage and is also ideal for any chronic aches and pains which are not the result of sports injury, but may also be due to muscle overuse, through work or repetitive movement Although the actual massage is not considered relaxing, the effect of the massage can bring relief from pain and soreness.

A Rejuvenating Facial Massage works on the face, head and neck. It uses pressure applied to acupressure points on the face, head and neck It is deeply relaxing and helps promote a wonderful sense of wellbeing, whilst rejuvenating your complexion Sarah Silvester

The responsibility of fire safety regulations falls with the 'Responsible Person' who is in control of the premises The terms of the lease must stipulate who is responsible for complying with statutory requirements and you should be familiar with those requirements It may also be that the landlord and tenant have overlapping responsibilities The responsibilities vary depending on the size of the premises, but can include:

The responsibility of the control of asbestos within a commercial property falls with the 'Duty Holder' which is the person required to maintain and repair the premises or who has control over the premises. Again, it can often be a shared responsibility, but you should review the terms of the lease for clarity as the landlord may place most of the obligations upon the tenant If the building has common parts which can be accessed by more than one tenant, then the landlord is likely to hold sole responsibility for that area The regulations state that you must take steps to find out if there is asbestos at the property and it is recommended an accredited surveyor is instructed to the inspection for safety reasons If asbestos is located, it does not necessarily need to be removed unless the surveyor advises you to do so, but you must form and follow a system for safely managing the asbestos

Commercial Property Responsibilities: Landlord

• All business premises must have a working fire detection system in place

If the property has asbestos and you do not have a plan for its safe management, you may be subject to enforcement action, an unlimited fine and imprisonment of up to 2 years. This article is not intended to be an extensive guide to all statutory requirements that should be considered by landlords and tenants but a snapshot of some of the considerations that must be made We urge landlords and tenants to consult government guidance and familiarise with the regulations imposed upon commercial properties. Whether you are a proposed or existing landlord or tenant of a commercial property, please contact us on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham collinge co uk for advice on your responsibilities *This article is provided for general information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or other advice or Tenant?

The responsibility of Health and Safety in a commercial property and the workplace is likely to fall upon the tenant as an employer, but landlords should be aware that they will be responsible for healthy and safety in any communal areas that can be accessed by more than one tenant A guide for workplace health and safety can be accessed on the Gov.uk website which summarises those responsibilities in full Responsibilities include but are not limited to providing safe equipment, toilet facilities, space, ventilation, light and drinking water If you fail to comply with healthy and safety regulations, you may be prosecuted Fire safety

There are numerous statutory requirements that apply to the ownership and occupation of commercial properties Given the recent changes to regulations on the energy efficiency of commercia properties we have produced a summary of the key regulations and who is responsible for them. Energy Performance Certificates (EPC's) EPC's are required by all commercial property owners who rent out or sell their property, unless an exemption applied, and they must be renewed every 10 years

• As of 1 April 2027, the minimum efficiency rating of the property is raised to C

• Keeping firefighting equipment on site such as fire extinguishers and sprinklers Failure to comply with fire safety regulations could not only lead to enforcement and an unlimited fine but also up to 2 years

There have been significant changes to EPC regulations of late The current regulations prevent a landlord from granting a new tenancy where the EPC has a rating lower than E The changes to the regulations to be aware of are as follows:

• As of 1 April 2030, the minimum efficient rating of the property is raised to B If you fail to make a valid EPC available to a prospective buyer or tenant, you may face enforcement action and be fined between £500 00 and £5,000.00. Health & Safety
