Local theatre group The Mundesley Players have just been awarded two nominations from the National Opera and Dramatic Association (NODA).

Both are nominations for the outstanding play Goodnight Mister Tom that they put on at the Coronation Hall last October The show has been nominated for the Eastern Region Certificate for drama Plus, an unusual nomination for Imaginative set for small stage

“I feel totally overwhelmed with the nomination, but hard work pays off”, said director Cheryl Collings

She pointed out that it was due to her cast and crew, who stepped up and made this play a success “There are a lot of people who don't know the amount of time and energy it takes to pull a show together and the time spent on it outside of normal rehearsal times ”

Award Nominations for Mundesley Players

Continued from front cover

The scenery grabbed its own nomination

Designed and built by the husband-and-wife team of Nigel and Brenda Holmes, it gradually transformed the stage from a cottage in the country to a dark house in London, passing through the village library, the post office and village hall Train stations and bomb shelters were also brought to life on what is a very small stage.

“Thankfully,” said Nigel “we were working with an imaginative director who let us use our creative talents to the full She did not restrict us to standard thinking This scenery nomination proves that she was right to let us run with it ”

The same production team are currently

working on the pantomime Aladdin, to be staged in the Coronation Hall between the 14th and 18th February A glittery, family friendly show, with music, dance and laughter

Not only are the production crew the same but many of the actors as well A brilliant introduction for kids to see their first live show

Tickets to the panto cost just £12 for adults and £8 for under 16s

They are available online from www.ticketsource.co.uk/mundesley-players or by phone at 0333 666 3366, or they can be purchased in person from The Coronation Hall between 2 30pm and 4 30pm every Sunday

Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club

On 10 January, after an excellent lunch at The Links Hotel in West Runton, Jacqui Palmer (Heritage Development Manager at the Henry Blogg Museum) spoke to us about the RNLI in Cromer Jacqui spoke in particular about Henry Blogg, Cromer ’s famous and most decorated lifeboatman in RNLI history, who in the course of his long career was awarded 3 gold medals from the RNLI, 4 silver medals, and also the George Cross and British Empire Medal

One of the rescues which Jacqui described was that of the crew of the barge Sepoy, which had been on its way from Hull to London but got into trouble off Cromer The seas were extremely stormy, and it was impossible to shoot a line from the beach to the barge The lifeboat Alexandra attempted the rescue but Henry Blogg returned with another lifeboat -H F Bailey - which was deliberately crashed onto the barge as the seas made it impossible to draw alongside; the H F Bailey made the rescue and was landed on the beach afterwards

Jacqui told us also about several other dramatic rescues (see, e g ,

Reflections from the outgoing Chair of ACNN - January 2023 (Updated 26.01.23)

When I moved to North Norfolk in 2013 I was interested in the needs of the many older people here, and volunteered at Glendon House (Overstrand) and Halsey House (Dementia Friendly Cromer).

I became a trustee at Age Concern North Norfolk in 2015 and then chair in 2016 I stepped down from the position at the end of October 2022 and completed a final “consultancy basis” period at the end of January 2023

I continue to serve as a Governor of the NSFT (Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust). Over the last 8 years funding bid processes have become more rigorous and, during 20192021 with the pandemic sandwiched in between those years, the charity had to ride out

many storms.

Over the years various trustees have given freely and faithfully of their time The current chair is my former colleague Mark Danson-Hatcher and I am confident that he will continue to guide the “ship” into smoother waters – not least because of his naval background! He is supported by four other trustees Anneliese Maerz (in post since February 2021) continues to successfully manage the Day Centre Hub’s activities

It gives me great pleasure to be handing over to a new chair at a high point where referrals have never been greater and staff have never delivered so many delicious “Meals on Heels ”

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all

staff members, trustees and other volunteers, who continue to make ACNN such a success Contact ACNN on 01263 821188 or alisonc@ageconcernnorthnorfolk co uk

Stage Direct Returns!

‘Deckchairs’ is coming to Sheringham Little Theatre 10th and 11th March.

Set on a seaside promenade, ‘Deckchairs’ comprises five playlets, some funny, some sad but all poignant, and each with a surprising twist in the tale

Written by popular playwright Jean McConnell and presented by local amateur company, Stage Direct, ‘Deckchairs’ promises to be ideal

Gunton Sawmill

Gunton's Water-powered Sawmill is one of the top attractions in North Norfolk The focus of the sawmill is to preserve and demonstrate aspects of England's industrial heritage. We run the 200-year-old saw on open days and for private groups making it popular with tourists and locals alike

There is also a growing museum of woodland industries, building trades and other rural crafts, so we are looking for volunteers to help run and develop both the sawmill and exhibits

We need practical people to operate the saw, stewards to engage with the public and explain the machinery and history of the sawmill

We are also looking for administrative 'Friends' Professionals and experts to seek and apply for funding, update with the Facebook page and website and generally oversee and advise on what needs doing and chase it up Rural crafts people and static displays are always popular so more of those for open days too

We are hosting a volunteer day on March the 12th, 2pm till 4pm, adults only please Sawmill gate will be open, NR11 7HL If you would like to be involved, please come along or contact us via the website: guntonparksawmill co uk

seaside entertainment with something for everyone, according to experienced director, Nigel Manson

As Nigel explains, ‘we recruited a talented all-girl cast of ten, and they’ve been rehearsing since before Christmas The five playlets are developing beautifully and I’m very confident the audiences will really enjoy what Deckchairs has to offer!’

This will be Stage Direct’s third production at Sheringham Little Theatre

North Norfolk singer-song writers release much-anticipated first single!

Cromer ’s acoustic singer-song writing duo, The Browns, are releasing their debut single, ‘Forgive and Forget’ on 24th February this year

The couple first met in 1977 at a school dance, but lost touch after their first date plans went awry, but they reconnected in 2015, married in 2017 and started writing and singing together the following year

Their distinctive sound developed organically as Annie started adding harmonies to Vernon’s vocals, and it’s their harmonies and blend of voices that makes their performances distinctive and unique

Their single certainly won’t disappoint their followers as layers of harmony proliferate throughout the song with its poignant theme of suspicion and betrayal in a fragile relationship that is seemingly doomed Sorrow, indignation, and resignation weave their way through the song much like the intertwining vocals and harmonies. The theme of helplessness and hopelessness are treated with elegance and sensitivity and the beautiful blend of harmonies only serves to highlight the disharmony in the relationship

The Browns have been regular performers at festivals and folk groups around Norfolk such as Deepdale Festival in Burnham Deepdale, Folk on the Pier in Cromer, Cambridge Folk Club, the Bury Folk Collective, Blakeney Beer and Shanty Festival and at various venues around Norwich They also played at festivals further afield such as Bedford River Festival and Boar ’s Bridge festival

Their songs are already getting significant radio play, but their decision to record an album and release a single is entirely due to the encouragement and support they received from their fans, friends and the audiences they encountered at gigs and performances

An album is planned for the spring, and The Browns will perform some of their album tracks at their upcoming gig for Folk on the Strand in March at the Belfry in Overstrand, where they will be supporting Sally Barker on the first evening of a weekend devoted to showcasing singer-songwriters

In the meantime, you can hear them at folk clubs, venues and events around Norfolk and beyond – follow them on Facebook or check their website for their events diary!

You can follow The Browns on Facebook www.facebook.com/ vernonandannie and find out more about them via their website at www thebrownsnorfolk com

Nor th Walsham and District Br anch of Cats Pr otection

As mentioned last time Duncan Baker came to see us on 6th January with his delightful daughters They were able to see the three timid cats, Frankie, Ella and Cassie who unfortunately hid up as they are not used to seeing so many new faces at once Although the cats in care were not happy to socialize, Ozzy, one of Caroline’s cats came out to see us Unfortunately, Caroline was not well enough to join as she had a nasty bug so Ray, her husband, who enjoys socialising the cats, stood in for her As none of us wanted to catch the bug it was not possible to offer refreshments to our guests We hope the girls were not too disappointed and that they will be able to come back another time when there are some cuddly kittens in care Charlie, the other cat in residence had originally

tested positive to FELV

His bloods had been forwarded to Glasgow for additional testing and much to our relief had recently been advised by our vets that these tests had given a negative result This means that we can now take another cat in to the adjoining pen

During January we said farewell to Wallace and Narla who hardly had time to settle in her pen and have welcomed on board, Jacob, Juniper, Reggie, Jasmine, Socks, Jodie and Jemima Although it is lovely to see the cats leave for loving new homes it is just as well there are new faces to take their place

Once again Barbara and her lovely team have been to Morrisons in Cromer and raised £132 36 for the cats They will also be at Tesco in Sheringham on 2nd February

Last time, I forgot to mention our volunteers who deal with the other essential work that is

undertaken, such as Irene who looks after the neutering line, Jan who issues the vouchers for people who take advantage of the neutering campaign, Bren who looks after the website and our Facebook page and Sue who completes the “cat-a-log” records of all cats that come into care and are re-homed We also welcome new volunteer Gill who is taking over some of my duties

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher) This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries The number also applies for those wishing to the advantage of our special neutering campaign

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858

Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www northwalsham cats org uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home

We are on Facebook You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Heritage Railway to See Visit from Celebrity Steam Locomotive

Visitors to the North Norfolk Railway between 27 May and 4 June this year will have the opportunity to travel on special trains hauled by steam locomotive No 60163 Tornado

Tornado, the first mainline steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960, made headlines as it steamed for the first time in 2008 Since then, the engine has continued to impress, hauling Royal Trains and appearing on the big screen in Paddington 2 as well as on numerous television programmes including BBC Top Gear ’s famous “Race to The North”

Tornado is also the fastest steam engine to run since the 1960s, reaching 100mph on a test train in 2017 but will be running at a more sedate 25 miles hour through the beautiful North Norfolk countryside The engine spends most of its time hauling premier excursions on the mainline, and this is one of the locomotive’s first appearances for fifteen months, so tickets are expected to sell fast Special trains hauled by Tornado will depart from Sheringham Station at 10 00, 11 40, 13 20, 15 00 and 16 40 each day from 27 May to 4 June – advance booking via www nnrailway co uk is essential Tickets will include a reserved seat for one return journey from Sheringham to Holt, with extra time at Holt station for passengers to take photographs of the express engine.

NO LONGER A WOMEN’S ONLY CLUB LASER,

A recent study at Coltishall Clinic has shown that a third of our patients are now men We offer a range of medical treatments unlike a lot of purely cosmetic clinics

Men can be just as concerned about their looks as women and how society views them It has seemed the norm for a long time for men to accept that they cannot change things.

Not anymore, the trend is that more men are coming for a variety of treatments and enjoying the benefits Men want to remain youthful and often want to keep up with their partners (who often introduce them to these treatments or bring them along to appointments )

Here at Coltishall Clinic we understand that men don’t want to give up their masculinity We help to navigate patients through the numerous treatments we offer and to give you the look that you wish to achieve

All our invasive treatments are performed purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in walk-out basis so there is no worry about general anaesthesia and hospitalisation issues

Here is a selection of our treatments for men:

● Acne or acne scarring [chemcal peels, microdermabrasion, IPL, Lasers]

● Fractional co2 laser resurfacing

● Masculine facial contouring, cheekbone and jawline enhancement

● Shaving bumps, moles, cysts, warts and verrucae removal

● Unwanted hair on face, back, chest, legs etc

● Rosacea & rhinphyma [bulbous nose reduction]

● Pigmentation/ broken veins on face

● Thread and spider veins

● Frown lines, crow’s feet & wrinkle softening

● Ageing face, volume replacement, nose to mouth lines softening etc

● Age spots, sun spots and liver spots

● Radiofrequency skin tightening

● Ultrasound body contouring

● Liposuction for face, neck, chin, jowls, man boobs, love handles and many body areas

● Face and neck Lift

● Hair loss treatments

● Varicose veins Laser treatment

We have seen increasing number of men including older men come in for our minimally invasive but very effective surgical options such as a direct brow lift, eyelid surgery or a direct neck lift

The beauty of these procedures is that they are relatively simple, uncomplicated procedures that provide great results with no significant recovery period or discomfort

Popular surgical procedures for men include direct browlift, eyelid surgery, face lift and direct neck lift

The end of Ground Rent for tenants?

Ground rent is a type of rent paid by the tenant of a leasehold property to the landlord or freeholder

It is a yearly fee that is paid in addition to the rent paid for the property itself Historically, ground rent has been a common feature of leasehold properties, with landlords charging tenants a fee for the right to use the land on which their property sits

However, in recent years, the practice of charging ground rent has come under scrutiny Many have criticized the practice as being unjust and exploitative, with tenants paying exorbitant fees for the right to live in their own homes. As a result, there have been calls for the abolition of ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties

The government has responded to these calls by introducing the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act, which effectively abolishes ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties, by capping all new leases to a maximum ground rent of £0 per year

The new law, which came into effect in June 2022, means that landlords will no longer be able to charge ground rent on new leases of leasehold properties While existing leaseholders will only benefit from this reform if they choose to extend their lease, otherwise they will be obliged to pay ground rent until the agreed review date

From the tenant's perspective, the abolition of ground rent is a positive development The reform will help to reduce the financial burden on those who are struggling to afford housing and will help to make housing more affordable and accessible for new tenants

From the landlord's perspective, the abolition of ground rent may have negative consequences. Ground rent is a source of income for landlords and freeholders, and its abolition could impact their ability to maintain and improve the properties they own Some landlords argue that ground rent is a necessary part of the leasehold system, as it ensures that tenants have a vested interest in the property and are more likely to take care of it Few reports suggest that landlords and freeholders may look to compensate for the loss of ground rent by raising the price of their property

The new law will also cap ground rent to a maximum of £0 per year on all retirement properties and this change is expected to come into force no earlier than April 2023

In conclusion, the abolition of ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties is a complex issue with both positive and negative consequences On the one hand, it will help to make housing more affordable and accessible for tenants, as well as reduce the financial burden on those who are struggling to afford housing

While on the other hand, it may have negative consequences for landlords and freeholders, and could lead to an increase in property prices

It is essential that freeholders and leaseholders understand the implications of the reform and seek advice accordingly

Laser therapy helping pets at Toll Barn Vets

At Toll Barn Vets we believe in constantly providing the highest standard of care for our patients by utilising cutting edge technology to reduce reliance on medication

This is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life

As part of this commitment we offer our patients Laser Therapy which reduces inflammation and provides pain relief It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring application of needles

Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with most sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions

Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease

We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform

these treatments and are happy to discuss the suitability of laser therapy as part of your pets’ care.

Pickle has come into the rescue for a 6-week holiday, he was found 3 years ago out during the day it was discovered that he was blind, so his finders have been caring for him since then I have put him on a strict diet as he is rather overweight, an overweight hog cannot curl up into a tight ball and makes them vulnerable to predators and frost if they are hibernating, luckily Pickle does not have to worry about that, but it’s better for his wellbeing if he loses a bit of weight while he’s on his holidays!

Editor ’s Recipe

It’s Valentine’s Day and what could be more of a treat for your amore than an indulgent chocolate pudding to round off a special meal?

As you know, I try to keep recipes simple, and this one is no exception There is a little magic involved but the pudding does all that in the oven, producing a light sponge on top with a delicious, silky sauce on the bottom Excellent served with cream, crème fraise or a delicate crème anglaise (custard to you and me) Add a few of your favourite berries on the plate for a special touch

This pudding is quite rich, so will easily serve 6. Any leftovers can be covered and put in the fridge to be reheated in the microwave

Self-saucing Chocolate Pudding

Ingredients

130g plain flour

25g cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

pinch of salt

100g soft brown sugar

60g butter, melted (+ extra for greasing)

1 large egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Fastest Pud in Norfolk!

I do hope that no one challenges me on this (!) but in an emergency, having completely forgotten to produce a pudding one Sunday, I decided to try something I have always meant to do but never got around to; a microwaved steam pudding I have seen it done many times (thank you for the inspiration, Joselyn!) but never quite plucked up the courage, but these were desperate times So with trepidation I whisked up what I hoped would be a delicious, light airy sponge, grabbed the marmalade and

125ml whole milk

For the sauce

25g cocoa powder

100g soft brown sugar

250ml boiling water

Method

Preheat your oven to Gas 4, 180C / 160C fan Grease an (approximately) 8 inch pie dish or baking dish with butter.

In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt Whisk together to combine.

In a separate medium mixing bowl, beat together the melted butter and sugar until smooth Add the egg and vanilla and beat well, scraping down the sides of the bowl to make sure everything is well combined and smooth Add ⅓ of the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Stir through gently until just combined. Now add half of the milk, mix gently again. Continue like this until all the flour and milk is combined just It is important not to overmix or the cake may turn out dense and tough Pour the pudding batter into your prepared dish

For the sauce: Mix together the cocoa, sugar

went for it what a wonderful invention the microwave is! Not only does it produce the lightest sponge I’ve ever had, but it is also a super economical way to cook, something we all need at the moment, and the speed it does it!

This recipe feeds around 4 to 5 if you add lashings of custard (microwave again, obviously) and I’m so blown away by the ease and speed that my family’s waistlines will be increasing over the next few weeks and months as I experiment with different flavours I guess that’s the end of the New Year Diet!

Speedy Sponge Pudding with Marmalade

4 oz self-raising flour

1 tsp baking powder

3 oz caster sugar

3 oz butter/marge (I use Clover)

1 large egg

1 tablespoon milk

1 dessert spoon orange blossom water (optional, use orange essence if you prefer)

2 tablespoons orange marmalade

and boiling water in a small bowl until well combined (it will look watery but don’t worry) Slowly pour the sauce over the back of a spoon all over the top of the pudding mixture in the dish

Bake the pudding for 25-30 minutes. The top should look dry and be a little springy Lift carefully out of the oven (the sponge will be floating on the sauce) and serve

Put everything except the marmalade into a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy Grease a 2lb pudding basin generously, add a circle of greaseproof paper into the bottom and grease this also

Spoon your marmalade into the bottom of the basin, and spoon your pudding mix on top, evening out the top

Put into the microwave on high for 5 mins, check and if it’s still a little loose in the middle return for another minute

Carefully remove from microwave and run a knife all around the outside edge of the pudding, and using a cloth carefully upend the pudding onto a plate, lifting off the bowl

Remove the greaseproof paper, being very careful as the marmalade will be extremely hot, and voila! It’s ready to serve with custard, ice cream or cream.

Experiment with golden syrup, lemon curd or jam in place of marmalade

Enjoy! – Jo

The first meeting of the year took place on January 9th Our Chairman Gerry Smith has been absent in recent weeks, due to illness, and Jane Purkiss chaired the meeting The committee has decided that the Colin Turner shield should be presented to Gerry for his immense contribution to the Society over the last 20 years or more All present endorsed this decision and asked for their best wishes to be passed on to him

The Christmas social event had been cancelled due to bad weather and so was postponed to January As well as time for catching up with each other, 8 members displayed 5 pages from their collections, as part of an annual competition The winner was Jim Farrell with a beautiful display of French Art stamps He was presented with a shield which will be inscribed with his name There were also philatelic items for sale to peruse whilst consuming the Festive “eats”

Legal steps to consider when diagnosed with a life-limiting illness

On top of the heartbreak and worry that a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness can cause, there will be a raft of concerns and uncertainties about your care and financial affairs, and it can be difficult to know exactly how to prepare from a legal standpoint

There are steps you can take to ensure that your care runs smoothly following such a diagnosis

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for Health and Welfare can be an essential part of future care planning, alongside the preparation of an Advance Care Plan

Considerations for an LPA for Health and Welfare

An LPA for Health and Welfare allows you to appoint a number of individuals to act as your ‘attorneys’ with respect to your health and care decisions Your attorneys must be over 18 years of age and have mental capacity

You must select your attorneys carefully, having due consideration as to whether such individual(s) would be appropriate attorney(s) and whether they have suitable character/ experience to make difficult decisions on your behalf

Your attorneys will have the power to make

decisions on your behalf in relation to your health and care, including but not limited to; your daily routine (diet etc), medical care, moving into a care home and also decisions surrounding life sustaining treatment (with the latter being subject to express authorisation being provided within the LPA itself)

It is important to note that your attorneys can only deal with your health and care decisions when you become incapable of making such decisions yourself

You may also wish to prepare an LPA for Property and Financial Affairs This will deal with decisions surrounding your banking, selling your home and paying any bills and outgoings during your lifetime.

Advance Care Plan

In addition to an LPA, an Advance Care Plan (ACP) allows you to clearly set out your personal wishes regarding the care and treatment you should receive It is not a legally binding document; however, it ensures that the people involved in your care know what is important to you

ACPs are normally made together with your healthcare team. Some people feel they need help from their nurse or doctor to fill in an

ACP, but you can complete one yourself An example of an Advance Care Plan template can be found on the Dementia UK website.

Once completed, you should keep a copy amongst your papers and also give a copy to anyone else involved in your care If you have prepared an LPA for Health and Welfare, then you should make a note of this within your ACP

Verdict Found Couple Died in 'unlawful killing and suicide' – Cromer

The couple, identified as Alexander Lawrie and Helen Lawrie, both aged 83, were discovered in the conservatory A Home Office postmortem examination found Mrs Lawrie died of head injuries while Mr Lawrie died from serious leg injuries There was no indication of forced entry or third-party involvement

The inquest heard that the couple, who met in their teens, and were described as childhood sweethearts, married in 1960 had three sons together Mrs Lawrie owned hair salons and lectured on hairdressing and Mr Lawrie was a lecturer in electrical engineering before retirement. Alexander had a keen interest in golf and cycling

Mrs Lawrie’s health had been deteriorating in her later years, including issues with mobility,

speech, eyesight and dementia and she needed regular care The hearing was told that they were looking at options including moving Mrs Lawrie into a care home or for her to have a live-in carer. A carer also told police that the couple had said if something happened to them, they would ‘go together ’ after more than 60 years of marriage

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Chris Burgess of Norfolk Police, who is leading the inquiry, said: “This is an incredibly sad incident, and my thoughts are with the family and friends of Helen and Alexander. It was clear to me that Helen and Alexander were devoted to each other throughout their marriage, and he cared for her fully throughout her deteriorating health ”
