Tony was Chairman of Cromer RNLI for the past 33 years and had many anecdotes to share with those assembled, then he presented the station with a painting for the crew room.

There was a family connection when Peter Stibbons was asked to come and receive his presentation - his cousin Richard Leeds – Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager – informed the assembly that Peter had first joined Cromer RNLI in 1960. Before becoming Administration Officer, Peter had been a member of the crew of the inshore lifeboat, this was at a time before a tractor was used but after the use of horses to launch the boat, it had to Richard Leeds (LOM) with Peter Stibbons be pulled down onto the and John Davies (Coxswain) beach! Peter also shared some of his memories of serving during his many years at Cromer RNLI. He said he would miss everyone at Cromer RNLI but the painting would always remind him of the friendships he had made.

An announcement about a new chairperson will be made soon.

BE PART OF THE CREDIT UNION

A new credit union is coming to Cromer and they are asking for volunteers who have a few hours to spare each week to help to run it.

Credit Unions are financial co-operatives, owned and run by their members with a self-help ethos that enables members to save regularly and borrow money to suit their own personal budget and circumstances.

There are currently around 500 credit unions in the UK with around a million members. This number is growing daily and the recent BBC1 documentary series A Matter of Life and Debt, which told the stories of people whose lives have been transformed by an ethical loan, has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of enquiries to credit unions across the country.

With the support of a grant from Cromer Town Council, the local development group is looking to establish Shipden Savers to enable people to save and have access to affordable loans.

Anyone who would like to be part of bringing a positive change to the community should go along to the Cromer Community Centre on Garden Street on Tuesday 28 November at 7pm. Volunteers that cannot attend but want to be involved, please email, creditunion@cromercommunity.co.uk.

Stage rock star has wizard new role in seaside panto

A stage star who has led a smash hit rock musical in London’s West End will be heard at a north Norfolk pantomime next month.

David Fynn took the lead in the stage version of School of Rock, taking the role of Dewey Finn made famous by Jack Black in the movie version.

Now the actor, who lives in Los Angeles, is set to feature as the voice of the Wizard of Oz at Sheringham over the festive period.

The star link-up comes through panto director Nick Earnshaw who went to drama school in London with David – as well as panto dame Shane Armstrong.

“We were at the Webber Douglas drama school together and when I needed a larger-than-life voice for the panto, he came to mind. I was thrilled when he said’ yes’, although it meant I had to rewrite his part to suit his big ego character.”

Irishman David, who recorded his part in a studio in LA, caught the acting bug when playing the lead role in a school production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His first professional part was NBC : David Fynn – who starred in School in the TV series Spooks where two of his three lines were cut. But he has of Rock in London and gone on to work in the National Theatre, and have parts in Doctor Who, will be the voice of the Sherlock and Game of Thrones before starring landing the star role in the Wizard in Sheringham’s London production of School of Rock for the past year. David and Nick have worked together in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in 2005 with panto this year.

Mr Earnshaw said this year’s panto was a “dream team” of a really strong professional cast, bolstered by local dance school youngsters.

His version will be based on the traditional tale – but with modern music, puppetry, magic, special effects including fire and snow, two chase scenes, and … The Guillotine of Doom.

“The challenge is getting the audience to forget about the Judy Garland movie and enjoy our take on the original story,” he added.

Sheringham Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “Having a star like David appear in our show is a real boost. We’re hoping he will make our wizard a real rocking role.”

The panto runs from 9 December to 1 January.

New Chairperson for Cromer RNLI

Derek Hinds, a long time supporter from Cromer RNLI has been appointed its chairperson, following on from the retirement, after many years, of Tony Webster.

Derek has been involved with fund raising for Cromer RNLI for the past 22 years and during this time, he has been recognised by the RNLI and was a regional winner in the RNLI supporter awards 2012 alongside his wife Rita.

In 2017, they were rewarded with an Excellence in Volunteering thanks in recognition of fund raising through their innovative football competition (For the past 22 years he has been chairman of the Cromer Lifeboat Football Cup competition which was established in 1906, raising funds for Cromer RNLI).

Derek is a member of the RNLI visits team at Cromer giving talks to all groups from schools and other organisations at Cromer Lifeboat Station and visits local communities giving talks on the RNLI. Over the years Derek has also worked as a volunteer in the lifeboat shop. During the

Inshore Lifeboat launch

Following a request from the UK Coastguard, RNLI Cromer launched its inshore Lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ at 6.17pm on Saturday 28 October.

A person in the water a mile off Doctors Steps had been reported.

The lifeboat and crew were stood down ten minutes later once the police had arrived.

By 6.30pm the lifeboat returned to station and was soon being washed down and made ready for its next launch.

Richard Leeds, Cromer RNLI Lifeboat operations manager said ‘Although we weren’t needed to help someone in the water, we were available to assist the emergency services’.

people who are experiencing long term health conditions, which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community.

It is a befriending service that reduces loneliness by actively matching volunteers with people who are in need of a positive change in their life.

Staff from Voluntary Norfolk will be at Sheringham library from 10am on 22 November and Tesco’s Sheringham from 10:30am on 28 November, to promote and recruit for their health volunteer service.

Christmas Market at Garden Centre Overstrand welcomes guests in droves

On Sunday 5th November Garden Centre Overstrand, supported by Sheringham based events company Ruth Elizabeth Events, hosted its first Christmas Market of the year. Over 1,300 people attended the event to enjoy the Christmas displays in the glorious autumnal sunshine.

Guests were welcomed to live music, owls and birds of prey whilst being able to enjoy the gifts and food produce on sale courtesy of the local businesses exhibiting at the event.

Sam Lowe, Manager at Garden Centre Overstrand, said ‘This is the first of our Christmas Markets we are hosting this year and our next event is on Sunday 3rd December so be sure to come along and bask in the fun at your local garden centre. Garden Fences Ready for Winter

“And after all the warmth Of the Summer and the Fall Cold November wind Cuts the deepest of them all”

He was right.

Those of you who read my previous article about trees will hopefully remember that I urged you to step out into your garden to look at your trees. This month, I would like you to do the same but to pay attention to the rest of the garden and think about how the worst of the winter weather may affect it.

Fence panels are an obvious place to start.

As we enter a season of tempestuous wind, the forces acting on a fence panel can be quite dramatic. The continuous movement of panels and posts can start to cause areas where that stress becomes concentrated (for example, on fence posts at ground level) which can become fatigued and weakened.

Prevention is much better than cure.

Those old panels and posts which you have been meaning to “do something about” could be about to make your life more expensive and aggravating than it needs to be. New fencing is not hugely pricey and looked as saving you money and time in the long run, is well worth the investment.

Take a moment to have a look at your fencing and be honest with yourself. If it looks a little tired, don’t wait for it to fail. Be proactive, it is much more economical to do so than to put right a problem once it occurs. Give us a call and we’ll be delighted to come and assess your fence and make our recommendations.

Please bear in mind that not all companies

are equal. There are, essentially, two main “schools” of fencing contractor. There are those who will provide the cheapest (usually feather edge or shiplap) panels and cheap lowgrade posts, and who will usually provide a “tooth sucking” quote, probably written on the back of an old McDonalds receipt. Then there are others, like ourselves, who will accurately assess and measure your fence, discuss your personal requirements, and submit a rational, honest and fair estimate, using the highest quality products sourced locally from suppliers with whom we have worked for many years.

Please don’t allow yourself to be “fobbed off” with a cheap quote. Choose something which will last, season after season, year after year.

'An Introduction to Birdsong' talk with Moss Taylor & Andy Clarke on 30 November 7.30pm – 9.30pm

The sound of the dawn chorus in spring is surely one of the wonders of the natural world, but birds do not only sing in spring. So, how and why do birds sing, when do they sing, and how do you learn all those different vocalisations? In a repeat of their popular double-act on seabirds, Andy Clarke will give us a brief introduction to how and why birds sing, followed by a guide from Moss Taylor on how to recognise 14 of the commonest bird songs, illustrated with recordings and photographs.

Sheringham Little Theatre has launched a Friendly Faces scheme for people who would like to see a show or movie but have no one to go with.

The new venture - for matinee performances only - is aimed at those who are bereaved, lonely, or just lacking confidence in stepping out to visit the theatre.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We are aware there are people out there who would love to see live stage drama or a film but are put off by the prospect of going alone. We aim to be a theatre for the whole community and the scheme means those people can come, be met by a Friendly Face – and, if they wish, share their experience with like-minded folk.

Going to the theatre is always a richer experience if you do with someone else, and Friendly Faces enables people on their own to link up with new friends and chat about the show. But even if you don’t want to mix, it means there will always be someone to meet you – one of our Friendly Face contact volunteers. “They can introduce you to others in the same situation, so you are never alone. But if you just wanted to be greeted and left in peace, that is fine too” said Mrs Thompson.

The Friendly Faces team, led by theatre trustee Joan Thame, can arrange for people to share a table at the interval in their own special group to discuss the event over a drink.

Mrs Thame added “This is for people who love theatre but find it a bit overwhelming to attend on their own, whatever their circumstances.

We hope this scheme will make them feel welcome to come and enjoy shows in a relaxed social setting – and maybe even make some new friends.”

People just need to phone the box office on 01263 822347, or drop in, and flag up that they would like to join the group for one of the afternoon shows.

Age Concern North Norfolk hosted a DEMENTIA AWARE BREAKFAST EVENT and were pleased to host

Ministers from several local churches to a hearty and healthy breakfast at their Day Centre , 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham.

An informative talk about Dementia Friendly Communities was given by Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair of Age Concern. The breakfast was also attended by trustees and staff from the Day Centre Hub at Age Concern, along with regular customers who dropped in throughout the event. The talk, which gave tips on supporting those with dementia and their families, as well as information about diet and healthy lifestyles, was followed by much lively discussion.

The ministers were able to gain useful knowledge about their local charity, Age Concern North Norfolk, which is staffed by a small team of paid staff with a larger group of volunteers and offers a range of services including a Lunch Club. Day Centre, Befriending and Home Visits and also includes Meals on Heels for those unable to get to the centre.

MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT NORTH NORFOLK DEDICATED LIGHTS SERVICE We are holding our second Dedicated Lights Service at St Peters Church Sheringham on Sunday 3rd December at 6.30pm Norman Lamb MP will be in attendance along with other Local Dignitaries.

This Non-denominational service is in memory of a loved friend or relative, or to offer hope and love to someone who is currently struggling with cancer.

The Christmas Tree in St Peters Church will be decorated with lights to represent each and every one of those who we wish to remember and will be switched on for the first time during the service.

The tree will then remain in place over the Christmas period.

Call for tougher penalties for serious fly-tipping offences North Norfolk District Council backs stronger enforcement action North Norfolk District Council has given its backing for tougher fly-tipping penalties in light of statistics that suggest the problem is worsening across England.

Local authorities recorded a 7% increase in fly-tipping incidents in 2016-17, taking the total number of incidents in England above the one million mark.

The overall problem is likely to be even bigger, though, as this tally does not include incidents of fly-tipping on private land.

North Norfolk District Council dealt with about 500 fly-tipping incidents last year, costing taxpayers nearly £40,000 in clean-up costs.

Most of the 495 incidents in North Norfolk involved roadside fly-tipping (288), but there was also fly-tipping on footpaths, agricultural land, railways and alleyways, and beside rivers.

The rubbish that was dumped included white goods, tyres, asbestos, and both household and commercial waste. Last year, new legislation meant anyone caught illegally dumping waste could face an on-the-spot penalty of £200.

NNDC has stepped up its enforcement action over the past year, including issuing these fixed-penalty notices. The council also recently brought a successful prosecution against a fly-tipper with the help of a private landowner. But the Local Government Association has called for bigger fines for more serious offences.

Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Waste and Environmental Services, said “Fly-tipping blights our beautiful district, which is why we have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to people dumping their rubbish illegally. But this growth in reported incidents of fly-tipping shows that there is still a lot of work to be done, and anything that makes more people think twice before just leaving their rubbish behind for others to clear up would be welcome.”

She added “It is everyone’s responsibility to dispose of their waste properly.

If you ask others to do it for you, check that they have a waste-carrier’s licence – and if you are not sure, don’t give them your rubbish.

“If rubbish that you give to someone else to dispose of is later fly-tipped, action could be taken against you, and you could find yourself being prosecuted.”

The cost to council-tax payers in North Norfolk for cleaning up fly-tipped rubbish was £38,846 in 2016-17.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Cats come into care for many reasons but Elsa, a recent addition, together with her four young kittens, was an unusual case and continues to provide surprises.

When Stephanie was contacted by someone trying to find where she lived because she had a stray cat in her care with its kittens, she was advised she needed to take the cat to a vet, to check to see if she had been chipped or not, which would confirm whether or not she was indeed a stray. Later that day Westover Vets contacted us because the cat was not chipped and the young woman, who had brought her and her kittens in, said she could not look after them as she was homeless! Although all our pens were full, Irene, one of our fosterers, kindly agreed to take them into her home in an indoor pen until one of our other pens became available. Elsa and her kittens made good progress; damage to her right eye was checked when she went for a health check, and, as it was an old injury which was not causing any problems, no further action was taken.

Elsa was neutered, chipped and had her first vaccination, as did her four kittens, two of which have now been re-homed. However, when recently touching Elsa’s leg, Irene noticed a small lump and mentioned this to her vet when she went for her second vaccination. Her vet thought it might be an airgun pellet and suggested taking an x-ray to confirm this. Because of the old eye injury, Irene asked David, our vet at the Bridge, whether this too could also have been caused by a pellet. The decision was therefore made to take x-rays to confirm whether or not this was the case. We were horrified to discover that she had been shot three times, once in the leg, once on the shoulder and once behind her eye. The pellet in her leg was rubbing on the bone and has been removed; the one on the shoulder was not visible and is not causing her any problems. To

remove the one behind her eye would cause damage to her eyesight and, although there is a slight possibility it could cause problems in the future, these would not be life threatening. As it is not causing any problems at present it was decided to leave the pellet in situ. Elsa is a very affectionate little cat, she does love attention and we are sure there is someone out there who would offer her the loving home she deserves.

Elsa, a lovely little Although we would dearly love to find who was cat who really deserves responsible, it is hardly likely that we would be able a loving new home to identify the person who perpetuated this callous act in view of Elsa’s previous history and the manner in which she came into care. Under the Animal Welfare Act the courts can impose a fine of up to £20,000 or even send a person to prison for acts of animal cruelty.

Fireworks Light the Sky at The Lighthouse Inn

The annual fireworks display at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott took place on 3 November.

Thousands of people attended Children’s entertainers Razz two displays during and Auntie Pearl the evening and there was entertainment for children by two local entertainers.

The adult show featured genuinely anthemic rock classics from The Who, The Beatles, Bowie, U2, Queen and Guns n Roses - songs that had all ages singing loudly as the big skies of Norfolk were painted with light.

Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Scheme Funding Boost

A multi-million pound sandscaping project to help protect the coastline from Bacton to Walcott has benefited from a further £500,000 funding from the Norfolk Business Rates Pool.

The announcement of the £500,000 from the 2017/18 Business Rates Pool is on top of £500,000 from NNDC; £500,000 from the local level by the Regional Flood and Coast Defence Committee (Eastern); and £120,000 from the National Natural Flood Management Fund.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “The aim of the Business Rates Pool is to fund Norfolk projects with strategic impact. There was a lot of competition and for North Norfolk to secure £500,000 is fantastic news. There were 34 applications received from right across Norfolk, at a total value of £6.2m, significantly more than the funding available. The fund is split between three key categories – early development, technical detail and strategic impact with some applications spanning more than one category, that’s why it is such a good news story that NNDC has been successful in securing £500,000 for this project.”

The innovative project would use natural processes to reduce coastal flood and erosion risk. It would involve ‘sandscaping’ the shoreline, in front of the terminal and down the coast; effectively using high volumes of sand to protect the coast. The volume of sand is approximately equal to 200 Carrow Road football pitches covered 1 metre deep in sand, or 1.5 million cubic metres. This would be the first time a project of this scale has been delivered in the UK.

It is estimated that the total cost of the scheme will be £17 million to £19 million pounds, which includes £4.8m - £7m to fund the village element of the scheme.
