Beginning with the Arctic and working his way south, Kevin treated us to a feast of stunning photographs, accompanied with surprising facts about the wildlife shown.

For example, he explained how a polar bear's hairs are effectively tiny air-filled tubes, which thus provide insulation. He also explained how the Svalbard reindeer has adapted to the harsh winters and extremely cold air of that region, with air entering its nostrils at minus 30 degrees Celsius!

This photographic journey then took us south via Scotland, Norfolk, Africa, tropical Latin America and down to Antarctica. We learned about gannets, puffins (and how these can hold so many fish in their beaks), avocets, swallows, humming birds, ostriches, alligators, albatrosses and many other creatures.

On 3 October, after an excellent lunch, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club was treated to an illustrated talk entitled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Wildlife Facts from around the Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, by Dr Kevin Elsby, FRPS. Photography has been a lifelong interest of his and this was shown in the impressive, professional quality of his photographs.

Hedgehog Haven

Autumn is underway so when raking fallen leaves, please check for sleeping hedgehogs - better still make a large pile of dry leaves in a quiet corner for a nest.

With 5 November approaching, another ideal nest site is a bonfire so please check before lighting.

In the last three weeks, five hedgehogs have been released back into the wild.

Unfortunately, Trump (pictured) is blind so she stays in my care as a long-termer - a blind hedgehog doesn't make a nest so would be vulnerable to the elements and other animals.

Christmas Cards Our picture shows the recipients of the cheques and our Immediate Past President, Arthur Bailey.

We were very pleased to be able to help these local worthwhile causes.

On Saturday 30 September we held a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ Brass Band Concert in the beautiful church of St. Andrew the Apostle in Holt.

Over one hundred people attended, including members of other Lions Clubs. Church volunteers made us so welcome and they provided snacks and drinks. A great evening was had by all and a profit made on tickets and raffle prizes to swell our coffers for other local needy causes. Thank you so much to Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band members for their wonderful playing and singing. It really did seem like the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with flags waving and guests joining in.

I cannot emphasize too strongly what a lovely church St. Andrews is and so full of history. Visit yourselves. It is open every day of the year.

Two Moongazer Hares will bring extra visitors to North Norfolk.

North Norfolk will play host to two of the Moongazer Hares planned for a countywide trail next year in aid of the charity Break.

The decision to support the charity was made at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s cabinet.

Break is 50 in 2018. Following the successful GoGoGorillas in 2013 and GoGoDragons in 2015, the charity has devised a new sculpture trail for 2018.

In addition to a Norwich trail of Hare sculptures called GoGoHares, Break is for the first time establishing a countywide ‘Moongazer Trail’. Sponsors are being sought for the event, which will start on 24 June 2018 and run until 8 September 2018.

NNDC have agreed to sponsor two Hares and set aside £15,000 to cover the project.

The Council’s Economic Growth Team will also help promote the initiative in order to encourage local businesses to sponsor further Moongazer Hares across the District.

It is believed the most suitable locations for the NNDC Moongazer Hares are likely to be Holt Country Park and Bacton Woods.

Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, said “The advantages are multiple – generating funds for a charity which

has long and historic links with North Norfolk, attracting large numbers of visitors to the locations where the hares are sited and benefitting local businesses. We will now apply to sponsor the two Moongazer Hares as a Council and, if successful, agree the terms of sponsorship and acquisition, artwork and location.”

Befriending with North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service

Spending time with Daphne Medcraft and Richard Fry together feels like you’re in the presence of lifelong friends – all the more amazing to think that they didn’t know each other four months ago!

Daphne was introduced to Richard following his application to become a volunteer befriender with Voluntary Norfolk’s ‘North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service’. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.

Daphne was referred to the service following recommendation from her community physiotherapist to have support to go out for short walks to aid healing of a leg condition. She doesn’t live too far from the beach at Bacton and used to enjoy taking walks along the water’s edge but she explained that it’s quite a busy road and she felt she needed support to do able to this, as she lives alone.

Following their introduction, Daphne joyfully reports that they have become “great pals” and that Richard is “lovely”.

He visits on a weekly basis and they have thoroughly enjoying each other’s company

Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation - for both the volunteer and the person they visit’.

North Norfolk Railway : Last 2017 Signalling Experience Day

The North Norfolk Railway held the last of their 2017 Signalling Experience days on 15 September.

Offered on seven dates throughout the year, each day offered two participants the opportunity to try their hand at signalling for real (supervised by a signalling inspector) in the delightful setting of Holt signal box. A visit to Weybourne or Sheringham signal box was also included in the day.

"The North Norfolk Railway received extremely positive feedback from all the participants and, as a result, is planning to run an expanded series of days in 2018", commented Andrew Munden, NNR's General Manager.

"In addition, several of the participants have now volunteered to train as signalmen, and will be joining our next signalling training course starting in December".

The Signalling Experience days join the ever-popular Steam Driving days complemented now by Diesel Experiences giving the opportunity to fulfil many dreams. All these experiences are bookable direct with the North Norfolk Railway.

Jazz at the Hub – October - Black History Month

On Sunday 29 October, the Hub, at Sheringham Little Theatre, will be hosting the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band as part of the Norfolk Black History Month series of events.

The programme will feature the music of black musicians from, predominantly, the first half of the 20th century.

Musicians as diverse and exciting as Louis Armstrong and Paul Barbarin to Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker.

The theme of Black History month is “rooted in the past, shaping the future”, an ethos that epitomises jazz.

The music emerged from the racial melting pot of the southern states of America towards the end of the 19th century and has never stopped evolving and developing. Successive generations of musicians have

continually built on the work of their predecessors and the inspiration of the pioneers. The Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band is very popular with local audiences and its varied programme has earned it the reputation of Norfolk’s “coolest” traditional jazz band.”

Falling Branches

These are sensible, practical questions to ask. I am not for a moment suggesting that we are all in imminent danger of annihilation by hordes of thoughtless trees bent on our destruction.

Our green and pleasant land is adorned with trees.

They shelter us from the heat of the sun, they shelter us from the rain. We gaze at their beauty and wonder at the diversity of creatures which they support.

As Martin Luther rightly said; “For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.”

We do, at least we should, know how valuable our trees are to all of us and to all life around us.

Yet, amongst this cavalcade of praise, must be inserted a word of caution and warning.

We live on a tempestuous planet.

A planet liable to storms, winds and weather which we, with all our technology, can neither predict nor control.

I simply suggest that for your peace of mind, you simply consider what is growing in the garden and ask yourself a simple question.

Even a small branch can cause significant damage to a home, a car or to you!

A large branch or a falling tree can be catastrophic or potentially fatal.

We need to think seriously about the trees we have in our gardens and open spaces and consider their position, their size, their species and their exposure.

Trees and wind are sometimes unhappy bedfellows. Despite their benevolence, trees have not evolved to live in concert with human

beings, or to have compassion for our property, our health or our lives. The wind blows, the branches fall, and we suffer.

Stand in your garden today, do it right now when you finish reading, look at the height of your garden trees. Where will they strike if they fall?

What will happen if that overhanging branch should break away?

“Am I confident that the trees in my garden have no potential to cause damage or harm?”

If the answer is no, then, for a small fee, a qualified tree surveyor such as ourselves, can visit, have a look and make any recommendations for work that are deemed necessary. We are not out to “rip people off” and if we genuinely feel that there is no work required, then that will be our response.

Cromer Girl Guiding Headquarters Makeover Earlier this summer, Cromer girl guiding headquarters was awarded ÂŁ1000 from Comic Relief 2017 Fund and also ÂŁ500 from the Village Hall & Community Award Fund, both through the Norfolk Community Funding Group.

This was awarded to facilitate required maintenance and redecoration of over half of the inside of the building (main hall, corridor, and bathroom area). Also the outside of the building has been painted to ensure that the building stands out for all to see.

Concert pays homage to Austrian master composer and Norfolk naval hero On Saturday 2 December at 7.30pm, north norfolk Chorale will give a concert at St Michael’s Church, Aylsham.

The feature work will be Joseph Haydn’s “Nelson Mass”.

The programme opens with Haydn’s stirring motet ‘Insanae et Vanae Curae’, and will be rounded out by selected instrumental works.

Haydn composed the work that today we call the ‘Nelson Mass’ in 1798, in circumstances that still seem familiar – uncertainty in Europe. But, unlike today’s merely political uncertainties around Brexit and the role of the European Union, in Haydn’s time the threat was to Austria’s very existence. This was the height of the Napoleonic wars, and Austria faced a real risk of invasion by the Napoleonic army. The urgent, foreboding opening chords of the new work seem to reflect the national mood, and it is hardly surprising that Haydn called his work ‘Missa in Angustiis’ – ‘Mass for Troubled Times’.

But even as the piece was premiered, Napoleon’s ambitions received a major setback when his fleet was defeated in the Battle of the Nile by the Royal Navy, under Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. This put paid to the risk of an Austrian invasion, and the Norfolk-born naval commander rapidly became a cult figure in Vienna. Haydn’s new work has been popularly known as the ‘Nelson Mass’ ever since. The Chorale’s striking publicity for the concert will reflect this naval theme.

Jonathan Dodd, the Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale,

said “singing in Aylsham is a new departure for the North Norfolk Chorale and we encourage people to come and hear the choir and our very talented orchestra. The ‘Nelson Mass’ is one of Haydn’s greatest individual compositions, and we are looking forward to giving an authentic performance, with forces very similar to those which the composer originally had at his disposal”.

Keeping Abreast: Portrait Exhibition The charity Keeping Abreast is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with an exhibition of portraits called ‘Femininity Comes from Within’.

Fifty portraits of women who have had breast cancer surgery and reconstruction will be exhibited in the Music Room of The Assembly House, Theatre Street Norwich, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Charity, from Sunday 29 October to Tuesday 31 October. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Keeping Abreast Portrait Exhibition, ‘Femininity Comes from Within’ by photographer, Julia Holland, has previously been on a National Tour during 2015, including a week-long showing at the House of Commons.

‘Femininity Comes from Within’ brings together portraits of women aged between 30 and 70, some of whom have been photographed before reconstructive breast surgery and some after. The participants have either had breast cancer or preventative mastectomies.

Alongside each portrait are the women’s own words about their experiences and feelings, demonstrating the femininity, strength and courage in adversity in each individual case. The stories are a powerful reflection on the women’s journeys through cancer and reconstruction. Many of their accounts convey the heartfelt gratitude they feel towards Keeping Abreast for the support they have received.

Macmillan Coffee Morning Success at Barkers Herne The recent Macmillan Coffee Morning held at Barkers Herne, Cromer raised the magnificent sum of £567.

It was organised by George Hacon and his team of workers. They made a huge effort and, as you can see from the picture, were delighted with such a great result.

They presented the money to the local Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Committee and the money will be used locally.

Be part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018

Applications are set to open for artists across Norfolk to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country.

Each year hundreds of artists across the region take part in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, inviting the public into their studios to reveal where and how they work.

The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and this year an estimated 28,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk. The scheme enables artists to promote and sell their work as well as to meet visitors who can see artwork as it happens in the artist’s studio. This year 515 artists participated in the scheme across 254 venues - along with 13 Norfolk schools.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018 will take place between 26 May and 10 June 2018.

Artists wanting to take part can apply online at nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £110 for individual artists, £300 for groups of artists and £110 for schools. This includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of 35,000. Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, as well as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2018, one of the largest annual art exhibitions held at the venue.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

At present we have several young cats in care that need homes with experienced cat owners, who would understand that, as they are nervous, they will need extra time to settle and adapt to their new surroundings.

These cats are all very gentle, and from past experience on a personal level, once settled, will be the most loyal and loving companions. We would dearly love to see them enjoying a home environment so if you have had timid cats in the past and are looking for a new companion please consider offering a home to one or even two of them.

We also have several lovely, affectionate and very playful older kittens available. Kittens like Dwight, Demelza, Prudie, Edric, Dotty and Maya, plus Theo, now fully recovered after an operation to repair a broken femur and Bassett, who had a reaction to Stronghold which resulted in a nasty bald patch needing treatment twice a day. They are all a joy to look after and we would dearly love to see them settled too.

Plans are now being put in place for the Christmas Sale at the St Benets Hall, North Walsham on Saturday 18 November. Bren and Jenny have been busy since the last sale making lots of lovely new goods just ready in time for us to buy our Christmas presents. Andrea will also have been busy, not only making her lovely cards, but also filling her freezer with cakes, sausage rolls, etc. for customers to eat on the day or take home to eat later. Cats Protection items (including Christmas cards and calendars) will also be on sale, plus a raffle, tombola and other stalls offering lots of bargains. We hope to see our friends and fellow cat lovers there on the day. More details of the sale will appear in the “What’s on Where” column of the next edition.

Post-pregnancy smoking study needs Norfolk volunteers The University of East Anglia (UEA) is looking for volunteers in Norfolk for a study into how best to support new mums in giving up smoking long-term.

Funded by the Medical Research Council, the study will recruit people from Norwich, King’s Lynn and Gt Yarmouth to develop the best methods to help prevent postpartum mothers from relapsing into smoking. There are currently no proven effective approaches to helping women to remain smoke-free after childbirth.

Dr Caitlin Notley from the Norwich Medical School at UEA said “Approximately a quarter of women in the UK report smoking in the 12 months before pregnancy.

Over half of these women manage to quit during pregnancy. However, most women re-start smoking again after their babies are born. This can severely affect the health of the mother and the baby.

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in adults, causing 80% of deaths from lung cancer and bronchitis. Babies exposed to ‘second hand smoke’ from passive smoking have higher risks of cot death and suffering from breathing problems and ear infections.

The Norfolk Coast Partnership has produced a range of fourteen information sheets on accessible walks in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The walk information has been developed in order to give everyone the confidence to get out and enjoy this special place. All the routes are short (½ to 1 ½ miles), start and finish near car parks with accessible toilets, offer frequent seating opportunities and are well waymarked.

They also offer the opportunity for everyone to discover special parts of the area. The information sheet also contains photos of things to look out for, the waymarkers to follow and the terrain of the route in order that you can judge for yourself if it is suitable for you.

Scam alert over rogue traders claiming to be ‘working with the council’ North Norfolk District Council warns residents not to be taken in by cowboy traders asking to check their roofs

Householders are being advised to beware of rogue traders who are offering roof insulation checks and claiming it is all part of a free government scheme.

North Norfolk District Council has been contacted by residents checking the validity of claims made by these doorstep canvassers. One elderly gentleman reported that he had been told it was a free government incentive being rolled out by local councils.

However, neither North Norfolk District Council nor Norfolk County Council have any ties to these tradesmen and are not involved with any such schemes.

The callers try to make an appointment to climb on to the roof in order to check the health of tiles and insulation. But this is a well-known scam by rogue traders who target vulnerable 26

residents and then try to con them out of large sums of money for unnecessary work. Sometimes, these workmen will deliberately cause damage on the roof when they inspect it, and then pressure the householder to pay for it to be repaired.

North Norfolk District Council has received reports that Mundesley is one of the places recently targeted by these traders.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “These callers are preying on vulnerable customers and are incorrectly claiming they are taking part in a council-led scheme. This is not true, and residents should not agree to any appointments with these people. Some of these cowboys can be very persuasive but it is important to check out any claims they might make. In this instance, what they are telling householders is untrue.”

Brian Chatten, from Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards, said “Our advice is always to be cautious of cold calls - whether received via email, post or telephone - and we strongly recommend not carrying out any transactions based on cold-calling. Anyone with any doubts should check with Norfolk Trusted Trader. Advice is always available via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.

A TRUE HAPPY ENDING FOR RESCUED PONY OAKLEY

Rescued pony Oakley, who was so weak he collapsed upon arrival at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, has made a miraculous recovery to become the latest resident to benefit from the charity’s rehoming programme.

Seven-year-old 13hh Cob cross Oakley was given a very warm welcome when he arrived at his new loving home with Guardian Laura Elsegood, and new best friend and rider Leo this autumn.

The sight of the happy and healthy pony walking down the ramp of his horsebox into his new home is a stark contrast to that of the emaciated weanling Redwings’ team first led into the ambulance following his rescue in 2011.

Oakley’s owner had contacted the charity asking for urgent help after struggling to treat his pony’s severe worm infestation. Oakley was incredibly weak and unable to support his own body weight; he needed to be manually lifted by Redwings’ vet team day and night to prevent his skin forming nasty sores.

Despite deep concerns that he wouldn’t pull through, determined Oakley gained 11st within six months and has since gone on to spend many happy years living at Redwings’ Aylsham Visitor Centre, north of Norwich, where his friendly nature and loveable character made him stand out as an excellent candidate for the rehoming programme.

Rachel Angell, Redwings’ Operations Manager who heads up the charity’s rehoming programme, said “I remember the day Oakley arrived; we were in tears at the sight of him. His chances of pulling through were very slim but he

amazed us all with his sheer determination to survive.

Thinking back to how he was then and seeing him now in his new home makes me feel so proud.”

Oakley is among almost 500 Redwings horses living in Guardian homes with many going on to successfully enjoy all kinds of disciplines from showing to cross country. Oakley has been rehomed as the perfect firstpony for his new young rider Leo, aged 11.

Leo’s mum Laura said “A friend of mine rehomed Redwings Thyme and she is an amazing little pony that Leo learnt to ride on, so we kept an eye on the Redwings website to rehome a pony ourselves. When I saw Oakley I knew he would be the ideal first pony for Leo and friend for my ex-racehorse Star. Oakley has been settling in well and is building a loving friendship with Leo, it’s so lovely to watch! We have even taken Oakley on a charity ride where we all had a lovely time!”

It’s a Dibley Christmas in Norfolk!

Local actor Laura Williamson, who lives in Norwich, is reprising her role of Geraldine Grainger in The Vicar of Dibley Christmas at the Sheringham Little Theatre and then at St. Georges Theatre in Great Yarmouth during November.

Laura and almost all of the original cast, from the first Vicar of Dibley production, are continuing the story of the Village of Dibley in this hilarious show.

St. Georges Theatre plan to start up their own amateur group, based at the theatre, and it is hoped that this performance will inspire would-be actors and back stage crew to join this new and exciting project.

The village of Dibley is still the quirky, chaotic place that we all know and love, and Christmas is on its way. But first, Geraldine has much to do.

She has some news to break that will leave David Horton in shock! She has to find a way to celebrate the anniversary of the Churches saint, which results in a stunning revelation from one of the Dibley Parish Councillors, and she has to find a way to break the twentyseven-year winning run of David Horton in the village quiz. A task made more challenging when she finds out that his opponent is Alice.
