Issue 465 14th March 2015

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Youth services at AWF receive funding for another year! Cromer based charity About With Friends are delighted to have their Short Break Activities contract for children and young people in Norfolk extended for a fifth year! This means we can continue to offer a great service to young people with a learning disability and their families.

For the under 18s we offer social activities during the evenings, weekends and school and college holidays. We offer a whole variety of activities from discos to theme parks; shopping trips and special events; sailing and train trips. In fact, we offer our young people exactly the same sort of experiences their mainstream peers enjoy. We are very much driven by what our members want and if they ask for something we do our best to provide it.

We have supported over 80 young people over the years and are pleased we can continue our activities for another year – and will be tendering for another long term contract with Children’s Services when the opportunity arises.

Springtime Safety

Despite the wet weather the springtime plants are starting to appear. Snowdrops are in bloom and even the daffs are starting to poke their greenery above the surface. It is a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorful springtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of your family. Taking a few simple precautions to avoid any plants known to be deadly to pets can prevent a potential tragedy for you and your family this spring.

Daffodils -

If your pet licks or eats any part of a daffodil – the bulb, plant or flower – they will ingest an alkaloid called Lycorine that can irritate the tissues of the mouth and throat and cause excessive drooling. Lycorine can also trigger a gastrointestinal response like voiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. In more serious cases, heart and respiratory problems can occur. Severe symptoms such as these require immediate attention by a vet.

Crocuses -

The variety of crocus plants that blooms in the spring is a member of the Iridaceae family. Spring crocuses can cause gastrointestinal upset in your pet, typically vomiting and diarrhea.

Here are a few common plants to be aware of:

Tulips and Hyacinths -

Tulips contain allergenic Lactones. Lactones are derived from chemical compounds and taste a bit like Whiskey. Hyacinths contain similar compounds. It is the bulbs of these two plants, not the leaves or flowers, which are toxic. There is no antidote if your dog is poisoned by eating a Tulip or Hyacinth bulb, and severe symptoms need immediate treatment.

Lily of the Valley -

The substance in Lily of the Valley that is toxic to your pet is called cardiac glycosides. If you think your dog has ingested a Lily of the Valley, you should get him to your vet for a checkup as soon as possible.

If you are concerned about your dog’s

John Hurst Exhibitions 2015

The Norfolk Wildlife Trust are holding a major solo exhibition by well-known local watercolourist, John Hurst to launch the new extended and eagerly anticipated visitor facilities at Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre.

Open from 1 – 27 April, 10am – 4.30pm daily, the exhibition showcases the artist’s work in support of conservation and features John’s vast coastal skies and fleeting weather patterns. Called ‘New Ground. Cley and Beyond’, some paintings record Pope’s Marsh, the new reserve purchased by the Trust with the support of Heritage Lottery grants and public subscription.

John enjoys painting daily life on the coast too, hence detailed beach studies will be found juxtaposed with minimal marsh watercolours.

Pannacotta

The snowdrops are blooming away and the Estate Manger has been climbing the apple trees with his secataur as spring officially hits the Gem of the Norfolk Coast. The phones have been red-hot for bookings and to celebrate the new season we are launching our Spring Menu on Thursday 19th March, full of fantastic local produce and mouthwatering dishes created by our head chef Michael West and the team. We also have a couple of tables left for the best Mothers’ Day lunch in Norfolk, so if you want to give the most important person in your life the perfect treat then please do give us a ring on 01263512412.

We look forward to seeing you soon here at the Grove.

INGREDIENTS • 400ml double cream • 4½ tablespoons caster sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 3 leaves or 1¼ teaspoons gelatine • 300g berries, to serve

2. Pour the mixture into four 125 ml ramekins. Cover each with a piece of cling film and refrigerate until set. 3. Unmould the panna cotta by placing the ramekins briefly into a bowl of hot water and then tipping them gently onto plates. Serve with fresh berries.

METHOD Put the cream and sugar in a saucepan and stir over gentle heat until sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for approximately 3 minutes, adding the vanilla. 1. If you are using gelatine leaves, soak them in cold water until floppy, then squeeze out any excess water. Stir the leaves into the hot cream until they are completely dissolved. If you are using powdered gelatine, sprinkle it onto the hot cream in an even layer and leave it to absorb for a minute, then stir in the cream until dissolved.

Crazee Kidz Club Coming to Cromer

Crazee Kidz Club is a youth club that started in 2009 in Roughton and caters for all ages from birth upwards through our four main groups.

We are aiming to extend our main Crazee Kidz sessions (for those aged 6-11 years) to start a new group in Cromer very soon. However to do this we need help to run it.

Help can be either on a regular basis or as and when you can. All you need is to be able to offer your time and enjoy being around children. All those who offer will be required to complete a DBS check prior to helping.

For more details please contact Paddy Bennett (Club Coordinator / Chairperson) at enquires@crazeekidzclub.co.uk.

Our other main groups are Little Stars (Parent & Toddler group), Hooligans (aged 11 and over) & Young Meets Old (a group run by our members for those of the older generation and their carers and young carers of the area).

Full details of all our activities can be found at www.crazzekidzclub.co.uk

Now is the Time of Year…

…when the Brass Band stirs from its post-Christmas hibernation to leisurely contemplate what airs and melodies it will perform for its followers in the forthcoming seasons.

What a load of codswallop! Just two weeks off over the Christmas period, that is all members of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band get.

At the beginning of January the musicians return to their many pieces of festive music - carols, sleigh ride jingles, novelty numbers, songs about snow (that pretty, fluffy white stuff that flutters from the sky and then deteriorates into a horrible grey slurry) to the Band librarian - and in return receive a generous wad of parts which include a variety of compositions such as marches, traditional airs, popular melodies and well known tunes from film and stage. Then the Band continues its regular Thursday practices, honing its performing skills in preparation for a first appearance in March.

Pop to the Band’s web site www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com where you will discover a great deal of information, including where the Band will be appearing throughout the year - it is updated as soon as further engagements come along.

ROUGHTON & DISTRICT WI

Ask for information about sponsoring a hen whilst visiting

We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at Roughton Village Hall.

On Wednesday 8 April our speaker will be talking to us about meditation and its use in promoting Health and Wellbeing.

Our May meeting on Wednesday 13 May will be to discuss Resolutions (present and future).

Our walking group and ten-pin bowlers meet monthly as does our Craft Group which meets on second Monday mornings 10am at Roughton Village Hall- this is a chance to finish off projects, start new ones and, most importantly, exchange ideas and skills. We sometimes arrange a workshop to learn something new.

A “Swishing” evening (second hand good quality clothing etc) will be held at the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 April. Tickets are £3 and include nibbles and a glass of wine. Please contact Anthea Wright on 01692 403605.

However, a particularly special occasion worth marking on your calendar is the Band’s Open Day on Saturday 11 April to be held at St Peter’s Church Hall, Sheringham. From 10am you can drop in to chat to members of the band over a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit. Be our guest. Learn something of the Band’s history. Have a ‘blow’ of a brass instrument, who knows you might be surprised at your undiscovered skill, and even consider how you can join our ranks. Age is not an issue, the youngest member is ten years old, and the oldest is … well lets just say he has had a bus pass for some years.

But hold on, the day doesn’t end there. The band will be playing a variety of musical pieces that evening at a Concert in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham from 7.30pm. There is no admission charge, just make a small financial contribution as you leave. We look forward to seeing you.

Prom Sponsored Leg Wax Five Year 11 students and two members of teaching staff rolled up their trouser legs to take part in the Sponsored Leg Wax to help raise funds for the year 11 Prom being held at Northrepps Cottage on Thursday 2 July.

Students across all years packed into the Assembly Hall to witness the event, which took place during lunchtime with students donating to spectate and to rip the wax sheets off the legs of the brave volunteers who consisted of Josh Hinds, Harry Dennison, Nyall Brown, David Corbett and Rowan Adams.

The waxing was performed and overseen by local Beauty Therapist, Louise Hale – business owner of Just Beauty based in Cromer. Louise who has helped with previous fundraising events for the prom over the past few years kindly offered her services and supplied all equipment free of charge to help with the first of its kind fundraising event at Cromer Academy.

After the students had strips torn off their bare legs, the crowd were asked to vote for the volunteer from the male staff who had agreed to support their pupils with the event. Mr Carter, Acting Deputy Headteacher and

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Mr Conlon- Curriculum Leader for Science were voted to join the line-up for the waxing session.

The event was organised by the Prom Committee who meet weekly to organise fundraising events to enable them to purchase additional extras for the Prom in July. So far their fundraising has enabled them to book a photobooth and candy floss and popcorn stall for the evening. The committee will continue to meet weekly to decide menu choices, colour schemes and continue in their fundraising efforts to help lower the cost of their tickets for their cohort and to purchase any further extras to make the evening as memorable as possible.

Friends In Focus

Sometimes the best way to explain what About With Friends means is to show photos of all the various aspects of our work. Now thanks to volunteers and supporters Ann and Malcolm Lown, we are going to be able to show off a lot more, good quality pictures.

Ann and Malcolm, from Stalham, have just presented us with two brand new cameras for use by our members and staff. Adult Services have been gifted a Canon SLR (including a separate telephoto lens) whilst the Youth Service has a lovely Fujifilm Finepix.

This wonderful gift came about after Malcolm bought Ann a digital camera a few years ago. Ann thought she would use it just for fun. However, a friend in America was posting a photo every day on Facebook, which inspired Ann to do something similar. So on every day in 2012 Ann posted a brand new photograph. The next year she decided to do something different and posted an old family photo every

day. This was not nearly as much fun as getting out there taking pictures so last year Ann went back to posting a new picture every day and to make it more interesting she asked her Facebook friends to guess where it was taken. She also promised to put a ‘pound-in-the-pot’ every time the answer was guessed correctly.

Chauffeured around Norfolk, and even further afield, by Malcolm, Ann posted various facets of the county such as village signs, interesting buildings and churches‌.lots of churches! Competition to be the first person to guess the location correctly was fierce and every photo was guessed, though some took many guesses before they were solved.

So, Ann ended up with ÂŁ365 in her pot and since some of the players also put money in the pot when they got an answer right the total earnings topped the ÂŁ500 mark which allowed them to buy us the lovely cameras.

Our members are going to be thrilled with the new cameras and very grateful to Ann, Malcolm, and the other players for their donations but that is not the end of it. Ann has already started a new photo competition for 2015

called ‘What The Dowst?’ Every day Ann is posting a close up or unusual angle shot of everyday objects and asking her followers what they are. Once again ÂŁ1 will go in the pot for every correct answer.

WildWorks World Premiere at Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2015

An immersive journey takes its audience deep into a world of shape-shifting humans and animals, created specially for the enveloping dark woods of Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall

The major theatrical highlight of this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival is a new commission from acclaimed outdoor theatre makers WildWorks, co-produced by Norfolk & Norwich Festival running from Tuesday 5 - Saturday 23 May (except Sundays).

Wolf’s Child is an immersive journey deep into the dark dense woodland surrounding Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall. It takes its audience on a journey into a world of shape-shifting animals and humans. An original landscape theatre commission from the masters of the genre, this promises to be an unmissable theatrical experience.

Created specially for the evocative woods around the National Trust property, the story is partly inspired by the Ancient Greek myth of Callisto, who became a beast and was killed by her own hunter son, and also the astonishing true story of Norfolk born Shaun Ellis, who spent two years as a fully integrated member of an Idaho wolf pack shunning all human contact. This extraordinary grown-up fairytale of love and betrayal opens in daylight against the magnificent backdrop of Felbrigg Hall. Then, as dusk approaches, the show follows an otherworldly journey through the trees to places of magical transformation; where

crows talk and wolves sing, and where one disobedient serving maid discovers her inner beast.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival enjoys an evergrowing national and international reputation for innovative and inspirational events. It is one of the UK’s big four arts festivals and one of the oldest, being able to trace its roots back to 1772.

Shaun Ellis is a special consultant to WildWorks on the project.

Wolf’s Child features original live music, a cast of 13 professional actors and musicians and up to 50 locally recruited participants.

Bill Mitchell, WildWorks Artistic Director expanded ‘Wolf's Child is a thrilling journey from safety and security into the untamed wild. We trek deep into the woods with a woman running from ‘civilisation’, confronting untamed beasts in the wilderness, and finally our own beast within’.

William Galinsky, Norfolk & Norwich Festival Artistic Director said ‘Wolf’s Child is our major commission this year. This brand new piece of landscape theatre is being created specially for us by one of the world’s most exciting site-specific theatre companies. They have created iconic productions across the world and we’re proud to be bringing them to Norfolk.’

WildWorks create sitespecific theatre that responds to landscapes and the stories within them; their most recent piece at The Lost Gardens of Heligan was part of the national 14-18 NOW programme and their critically-acclaimed The Passion with Michael Sheen drew an audience of over 25,000 to the streets of Port Talbot. From their base in Cornwall they have taken work us all around the world, hosting workshops in Palestine, leaping off harbour walls in Newcastle or awakening castles in Belgium.

The 2015 Norfolk & Norwich Festival runs from 8 – 24 May.

Sue Gives Prompt Aid

Sue Bignell, who lives in Cromer, has the unenviable task of prompting the (frequently helpless with laughter) actors who will be putting on the hilarious play, Little Grimley Presents Strictly Sex Factor on Ice.

Joyce, who formerly worked in accounts, is tasked with making sure the cast are word perfect so the entire production will add up to a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

When desperate needs trigger desperate actions for the amateur dramatic group from Little Grimley, whose audience figures are frequently less than the number of actors on their stage, they decide to attempt a spectacular production to woo people from their usual Saturday evening watching television.

This hapless group find that pretty much everything that can go wrong with a production, does go wrong, with hilarious consequences!

Their arch enemy, the reviewer from the local paper, has written the most awful, painful, indeed scathing review of their last production, so can they impress him this time? Will this amazing event ‘on ice’ (despite the fact they have no ice rink) persuade him to change his mind? Will this be the one production when things actually go right for them?

All will be revealed in this rib-achingly funny play, put on by Sheringham Players at Sheringham Little Theatre, as one of three short plays under the title of Ménage a Trios.

The event runs from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 March. Tickets available from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347. 14

Cromer coast protection work update

The second phase of North Norfolk District Council’s £8m ‘Cromer Coast Protection’ scheme has been extended and is expected to continue until early 2016.

The scheme, designed not only to maintain the existing level of defence, but also to withstand many years of predicted sea level rise, has involved more work than was originally programmed due to the storm surge in December 2013.

To ensure minimal disruption to the Easter and summer holiday periods, work will stop as originally programmed on 31 March 2015.

Following positive discussions with key stakeholders, including residents and local businesses to consider options for the continuation of the scheme, it has been agreed that the contractor (Volker Stevin) will start site set-up on Monday 7 September in preparation of site work starting on Monday 14 September.

Work, including repairs to the timber groynes, and re-facing the existing sea walls has been

completed on the east end of Cromer’s frontage.

The extension will include work at the west end, the parapet wall, underneath the Pier and promenade surfacing.

The sea defences at Cromer protect the town from the force of the North Sea. They were built in various phases as the town expanded, the earliest dating back to 1836. Over the years, the walls and groynes have withstood many storms and have been maintained, enhanced and repaired as and when required.

The coast protection scheme will reduce the impact of the sea along the Cromer frontage as well as helping to maintain a stable beach in front of the seawalls for future years. The historical significance of some of the structures has been carefully taken into consideration and the overall character of the promenade should not change.

Pedestrian access to the Pier will remain during the work, and signage will be installed to direct visitors away from work areas when required. Cromer will remain open for business and the

Cromer Flower Club

Our first meeting of the New Year saw Judy Barham demonstrate ‘A Walk with Me’. Actually, a walk through her garden starting with an arrangement in a large pot moving to a hanging basket and a homemade greenhouse and finally two chairs beautifully decorated with lilies and roses to remind us of warm sunny days ahead in the garden.

Ringing the changes at the Belfry Arts Centre

The Belfry Arts Centre is a vibrant centre for the arts in Overstrand, providing an eclectic programme of exhibitions by local, national and international artists. The centre also runs workshops, talks and artsrelated events, and is home to the studios of four working artists.

We are looking for two enthusiastic Committee Members, ideally one with experience in marketing and the other with administration skills to join our Management Board. We are keen to encourage people from a wide range of backgrounds to work with the existing Management Board Members to ensure growth and a sustainable future for this creative gem of an Arts Centre.

If you are passionate about promoting creativity and are seeking to be involved in a changing way to address and deliver high quality support to local communities, please contact Susan Purser Hope on susan@purserhope.co.uk for further information.

engineering operations are a spectacle that can be viewed from many cliff top vantage points. Work will not be carried out for two weeks over the Christmas holiday period.

Cabinet Member for Coastal Management, Angie Fitch-Tillett said “The work we are undertaking now will protect Cromer, its residents, its businesses and its visitors for many years to come, and despite the difficult working conditions being blown off course temporarily by the tidal surge, the contractor has made good progress so far.

“Right through the work we have ensured that Cromer has been open for business and this will not change with the extension to this major engineering scheme.”

The Cromer Coast Protection Project has been chosen by the Institute of Chartered Engineers (ICE) to be part of its ‘This is Engineering’ campaign. The campaign has been designed to bring together construction projects across the UK to show how civil engineers shape the world around and also aims to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering.

Judy judged our competition and best in show was Margaret Humphries. Our next meeting is on Monday 16 March at 7.20pm at Cromer Junior School with demonstrator Melissa Sheldrake presenting ‘The Language of Flowers’. Visitors are always welcome.

St. Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market Village Library

After a very busy month welcoming so many visitors to see the church snowdrops, the Village Library facility, where books may be borrowed, exchanged or purchased is seriously depleted and in need of replenishment. Donations of clean, unwanted books may be left at the back of the church and will be gratefully received.

Thorpe Market Snowdrop Teas

The four Sundays in February saw a steady stream of visitors to Thorpe Market Church.

A total of 796 people braved the cold to see the snowdrops and enjoy a warm church and tasty teas.

Nearly £1900 was raised for church funds. This year, for the first time, artists used the church display screens and created a lot of interest. The Village Library stocks were well depleted by the end of the month.

The churchyard still looks beautiful and is worth a visit. Visitors from all over the county and beyond were welcomed to this annual event.

The next similar happening in the church calendar takes place the weekend of the 13 June. The wildflower conservation areas will be at their best and Norfolk Wildflower Trust will be hosting a wildflower identification day on the Saturday. Anyone with an interest in grassland

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Part 2 – What is Deprivation of Liberty? By Victoria Wells – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr

In my previous article I considered the purpose of and procedure for obtaining Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) authorisation.

This is required by hospitals and care homes when they consider it necessary to deprive someone of their liberty in order to provide the necessary care. It can only be applied to someone who has a mental health condition (including dementia) which prevents them from making decisions about their care or treatment.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 sets out the test for whether someone lacks mental capacity to make decisions as being if they cannot do one or more of the following: 1. Understand information given to them

2. Retain that information long enough to be able to make a decision

3. Weigh up the information available and understand the consequences of the decision

4. Communicate their decision, by any possible means.

But what exactly does “deprivation of liberty” mean? A Supreme Court case recently provided the following definition – “the person is under continuous supervision and control and is not free to leave, and that person lacks capacity to consent to these arrangements” It is not relevant whether they actually object or not to the arrangements for their care.

Other cases have provided the following examples of situations and decisions which may amount to a deprivation of liberty:

“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

If you require advice on this matter please contact our Private Client Team here at Hayes + Storr on 01692 503081.

If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our office or email law@ hayes-storr.com.

• Restraint of a person in order to admit them to hospital

• Medication being given against a person’s will, in particular to sedate them

• Complete control over a patient’s care or movements for an extended period of time

• Restrictions on where they may live, against their wishes or that of a family member

• Refusal to release a patient into the care of others

• Restriction of a person’s access to their family and friends

• Restriction of their movements within a care setting, including the locking of doors

Wiltshire Farm Foods. Just heat, and eat.

• Restraint being used when giving care or treatment

• One-to-one supervision

• The use of bedrails and wheelchair straps.

A deprivation of liberty can consist of one major decision by the care provider, such as restraint or not being able to leave the care setting, or several smaller decisions, combined. Ultimately it is the amount of control that the care provider has over the person that will decide whether there is a deprivation of liberty, and each case has to be looked at individually.

The Supreme Court has observed that there have been far fewer applications for DoLS authorisations than was envisaged when the legislation came in. However, it appears that care homes in particular are increasingly applying for a DoLS authorisation whenever they have a client who lacks capacity to make decisions about their care and treatment. This may be in part to protect, quite understandably, their own legal position, but should hopefully as well provide the intended safeguards for the vulnerable person.

If you have a loved one in a care home or other care setting, it may be worth checking whether a DoLS authorisation is in place, in case you have not been made aware of this. Cromer Times 465 March 14th 2015

Friends of Cromer Museum

After our winter break it was nice to welcome members to our AGM in February. It has been a turbulent year for the museum and as many readers will know, the museum had to close for four months over the winter as a result of the halving of the museum’s grant from the district council. This has not stopped the Friends of the Museum from supporting the museum with funding for the purchase of items for the museum’s collection and a programme of talks in the autumn and spring that help to raise the profile of Cromer Museum and allow the people of the area to hear some stimulating speakers. Members were able to thank Kathleen Lane who stood down as secretary after many years of valuable service. The museum reopened on 2 March so please go along and support this important local resource.

Our speaker after the AGM was Tony Stuart who in the not too distant past was a key figure in the curatorial department of the museum service. His topic was Norfolk in the Ice Ages and he gave a stimulating account of how Norfolk’s climate had changed in the last

million years and the effects this had on the human and animal populations of the time. Sea levels have risen and fallen as the earth’s climate changed and this accounts for the richness of animal life in the area. Remains of 55 mammal species have been found in the Cromer Forest Bed which dates from 700,000 years ago. Lions, hyenas, wolves, beavers and wild boars are some of the larger mammals alive at the time but smaller species such as shrews and hedgehogs were also common. Only recently, remains of the jawbone and teeth of a rhino were unearthed in cliffs not far from where the West Runton mammoth was found in the 1990s.

One of the most significant discoveries of recent years concerns human occupation of the area. Evidence from Happisburgh suggests that humans lived in this area 900,000 years ago. A hand axe found at Happisburgh is one of the oldest finds in North West Europe and footprints thought to be of two adults and a child from the same area but later in time have helped to fill in some of the gaps regarding

early human occupation. This is particularly important as very little if any evidence of human occupation has been found that can be linked to later inter-glacial periods. Only in the last 100,000 years is there clear evidence of human presence in Norfolk. Neanderthal evidence from Lynford shows that these primitive beings lived in the area about 65,000 years ago but what we might consider to be “modern” humans did not arrive until about 40,000 years ago. They were hunter/gatherers. Evidence suggests that farming began about 6,000 years ago.

The Cromer Forest Bed Fossil Project is a joint venture between Norfolk Museum Service, The Natural History Museum, the British Museum, English Heritage and the University of London. It aims to promote interest in the geology and history of this part of Britain and encourages anyone who finds evidence of animal and human occupation to contact any of these bodies so that their finds can be recorded. We are lucky to live in an area that is of international significance when it comes to the study of our prehistoric past.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW

YOUNG MUSICIANS’ CONCERT - TEMPLEWOOD, NORTHREPPS

Cromer Music Evenings in presenting its 21st concert season have again invited young musicians to perform at Templewood, whereby they will gain experience and confidence playing to a live audience, which is especially valuable if their aim is to become professional musicians.

The first to perform was guitarist, Danny Murphy, playing four pieces with admirable confidence and technique. Of the four pieces, Capricho Arabe, was his best performance - playing the original version confirmed the potential the 16 year old artist has, so much so that recently he has been accepted into the National Youth Ensemble.

Fifteen year old Sam Aldersey-Williams, base baritone, sang Silent Noon by Vaughan Williams. Here this young man’s vocal quality will mature as his age advances with the right coaching.

Soprano, Katie Thompson 17, was joined by Aldersey-Williams singing Plaisir D’Amor by Martini - a pleasing performance which required a more sensitive piano accompaniment.

Seventeen year old pianist, George Jefford, played Waltz in C sharp minor Op 64 No 2 by Chopin and performed at a safe tempo ensuring accuracy in note spellings.

Flautist Megan Storer, also 17, played three pieces with obvious confidence, expertise and masterly control of the instrument, especially in Ian Clarke’s The Great Train Race, introducing multi-phonetics and muffled resonance capturing the effects of a steam train - superb!

these young musicians to Templewood, culminating into a concert of a high standard which delighted yet another capacity audience. Arthur Windridge in closing, thanked all those who took part and presented each of the young people with a gift in appreciation of their achievements. Terry Keeler

Tuliptree Designs.... . . . . b e i n sp i re d

Now open within the grounds of Groveland Farm Shop, we stock a fabulous range of Quilting and Dressmaking fabric, Handmade buttons, beads, jewellery, artwork and gifts.

We also run workshops and classes to suit all abilities in quilting and patchwork, polymer clay, jewellery making and all mediums of art.

George Jefford, this time playing trumpet, gave a really intense rendering of Rogers & Hart My Funny Valentine managing some very competent improvisatory ideas to this ‘evergreen’ and producing a sound with a ‘jazz feel’ - a Miles Davis touch, really impressive.

Soprano, Katie Thompson sang four songs by Thiman, Cornelius, Gluck and Sondheim. Again, this charming voice was somewhat overwhelmed in places by the piano accompaniment.

Two piano solos played by Aldersey-Williams being Sonatine in three movements by Ravel and I Got Rhythm by Gerswhin - two choices of programme imposing his innate ability regarding the interpretations of both impressionism and jazz idioms.

Jimmy Jefford (clarinet) and George Jefford (piano) played Malcom Arnold’s Sonatine in three movements - Allegro, Andantino and Furioso - a truly exciting performance from these two brothers, whose joint artistry was the highlight of this inspiring concert.

Overstrand Evening WI

A change of venue for our February meeting, which was held in the Methodist Church Hall when Vera Woolven gave us an interesting talk.

Vera enlightened us with a true story, ‘A Boy called David’. David was educated at Sidestrand School and, from quite an early age, he had a dream. After years of sheer hard work, he achieved his aim in life whilst overcoming knocks on the way. He worked his way up through the Royal household, holding various positions before becoming Butler to the Queen. He was knighted by the Queen and now works for the Dutch Royal Family.

Following refreshments, initial arrangements were discussed for the coach trip to Walsingham in May, a request was made for items for the tombola in May, as well as for the Yard Sale in July.

At our March meeting, David Frost will talk on the subject ‘The Felbrigg Squires’.

We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you do not have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings.

Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

Council to coordinate commemorative events to mark Centenary of World War 1 More than 20 representatives from key North Norfolk- based organisations attended a meeting at North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) offices recently to discuss ideas for commemorative events and activities to mark the Centenary of World War 1. Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, previously indicated at the Council’s Cabinet meeting on 6 January how the Council would act as a coordinator and a promoter for events being organised across the region during a period of four years (2015 – 2018) to commemorate World War 1.

The North Norfolk WW1 Network (NNWN) has been set up to create networking opportunities and to help those with ideas and initiatives understand what the Council can do to help them. Representatives included 11 Town and Parish Councils, four branches of the Royal British

Legion, three museums, five local historical societies, historians and publishers, officers from Norfolk County Council’s Record Office (NRO) and the Swanton Morley-based Light Dragoons. Councillor Glyn Williams said “We had a good turnout of enthusiastic participants for the first meeting of the North Norfolk WW1 Network. All are completely committed to the project which is a great outcome”. Colin Chambers, Chairman of the Royal British Legion’s North Walsham branch added “The meeting proved to be very productive and useful networking opportunity. It was also pleasing to see four Royal British Legion branches represented; all sharing ideas and working together with the district, town and parish councils.”

Cabinet agreed a budget of £20,000 to support activities at its meeting on 6 January and this will be used during the four year period to:

Council completes polling districts and polling places review

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has recently completed a four yearly review of its polling districts and places, to make sure voting is convenient for people and polling stations are up to the job. Improvements have been identified and will be made with immediate effect.

The review considered whether communities are properly served by the places and facilities chosen for polling at election times; and took in to consideration how a sparsely-populated rural area can sometimes pose challenges. A consultation exercise enabled people to suggest new places for polling stations, or comment on the suitability and existing ones. The small number of submissions that were made have been considered, including those which were set out by the Returning Officer at the start of the review and the following changes will be implemented with immediate effect:

• Coordinate and promote local commemorative activities through dedicated web pages including an events diary running up to the end of 2018 and links to research, funding, voluntary and educational resources.

• A lasting memorial with the official unveiling of north Norfolk-based blacksmith Nigel Barnett’s donated sculpture ‘Poppies in Steel’; a permanent installation to be sited at NNDC’s Cromer Offices during this year’s Armed Forces Week in June. • Implement a North Norfolk WW1 Pill Box Trail.

Proposed activities include new publications, a district-wide photographic exhibition, WW1 trails, trench cake baking workshops, education projects, exhibitions, civic dinners and a Great War auction. The North Norfolk WW1 Network will meet again (date to be confirmed) to discuss the development of the current proposals.

The Council is encouraging anyone that is organising a WW1 commemorative event and would like to join the group to contact Sonia Shuter by calling 01263 516173 or by emailing sonia.shuter@north-norfolk.gov.uk

• To improve wheelchair accessibility, offer better parking facilities and polling accommodation, the polling place and polling station for the polling district of Sheringham South will change from St Joseph’s Parish Hall to Sheringham Community Centre, Holway Road.

Moore the Merrier

Richard Moore is Cromer Squash Club’s new handicap champion.

The newcomer to the club, who was playing in the prestigious tournament for the first time, took full advantage of his positive handicap of +10 to win a well contested and interesting final against Matthew Jordan (+3) 14-16 17-15 15-12 15-12 in front of a large and appreciative Norwich Road crowd.

Moore was following in the steps of his unrelated name sake, Chris, who won the title 20 years previously and, under the excellent handicapping system, went into each game with an immediate nine point advantage. He

started rather nervously, serving the first ball of the match out of court and was then only able to win another two points as Jordan opened up a 13-11 lead. He did recover but then on game ball served another fault that enabled Jordan to take the game 16-14.

The second game followed a different pattern as Moore, playing with more confidence, opened up a 14-8 lead only for Jordan to save six “game balls” and draw level at 14-14. In a surprising move, Moore then had enough confidence in his own ability to opt to play to 17 and he won three successive rallies to take the game 17-15 and draw level.

In the third game, Jordan pulled the handicap back to 8-10 but then, for the second time in the match, Moore won three successive rallies to lead 13-8 and went on to take the game 15-12. Buoyed by this success he stormed into a 12-3 lead in the fourth only to serve another fault but he put this behind him as he went on to lead 13-6 and although Jordan pulled the score back to 12-13 Moore took the next two points to win the game 15-12 and the match 3-1.

walk-over in the semi final as his scheduled opponent, Sean Moore, was forced to withdraw through injury. After a first round bye Jordan defeated the runner-up in the 2013 club championships, Alan Harper (0) in the quarterfinals and then in the semi-final was forced to come from 0-2 and “match ball” down against veteran Steve Booth (+5) before winning 3-2.

Afterwards Moore said “This was a tremendous competition and I had three extremely close and enjoyable matches. Not for one moment did I think I would win the tournament.” Jordan paid tribute to the winner saying: “Richard played exceptionally well and took full advantage of his handicap. The key moment was at 14-14 in the second game when I expected Richard to opt for ‘sudden death’. If he had done that I would have won the game and gone 2-0 ahead but the way Richard played in the third and fourth games he would probably have gone on to win the fifth as well”

Routine Nail Care Hard Skin Removal Corns Orthotics

Both players worked hard to get to the final. Moore had an extremely close first round match against the 2011 beaten finalist, Alistair Dunnett (+10) before winning 3-2 and then won a titanic quarter-final against the 2007 winner and reigning club champion, Ben Herrieven (-10) before having a fortuitous
