Cranachan

CRANACHAN

A very happy New Year from all of us at The Grove!

We are taking the opportunity of the early season to get some renovations underway; always interesting when a property is over 150 years old in places. The main kitchen once had an ‘emergency’ window fitted after our old friend Terry Bane fell through a single-skin brick wall during a tea-break, and removing paper from lathe-and-plaster walls is often done with heart in mouth! However no mishaps yet and we will be back open for Burns’ Night on 23rd January.

Spaces are going fast so please call quickly on 01263512412 to book your table! We look forward to seeing you all during 2015 when we are hoping to continue providing high-quality Norfolk food for you to enjoy.

Arise Sir John

(a traditional Burns’ Night dessert)

Decorate each dessert with a sprinkling of the remaining 1 tbsp toasted oatmeal and the reserved raspberries.

Ingredients Serves 4 • 5 tbsp porridge oats • 300 ml whipping or double cream • 2 tbsp clear honey • 2 tbsp whisky • 400 g raspberries

Method Preheat the grill to high. Line the rack in the grill pan with foil and spread the oatmeal over the foil. Toast under the grill for about 3 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the oatmeal is golden.

Set aside to cool for about 15 minutes.

Put the cream in a bowl and whip until thick. Stir in the honey and whisky, then fold in 4 tbsp of the toasted oatmeal.

Jazz at The Hub

Best (drums/percussion), Holly Graham (vocalist) and Dave (trombone) are always in demand, whether it be symphony orchestras, big bands, theatre shows or teaching. The common denominator is a love of and commitment to playing jazz that is enjoyable and challenging and accessible for people to listen to.

The monthly jazz programme on Sunday evenings at The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre has been extremely successful and will be ushered into the New Year when local trombone maestro Dave Amis takes his quintet, Cyan Traces, to the venue on 25 January.

Dave is truly a local musician and still lives in Cromer. His father ran a well known band in the area, Dave sang in the parish choir, learnt piano and began playing trombone with the Cromer and Sheringham Town Band. As a child the family home was awash with the sounds of jazz (played on 78s) and the AFN Frankfurt and Voice of America Jazz Hour were regular ‘wireless’ programmes. In addition, the area was still heavily populated by American service men and they had an influence on the indigenous music culture.

With the seeds of his music career firmly sown, Dave’s yearning for jazz took him to London when he was sixteen. It was in the metropolis, where he met like minded musicians and attended music college, that his development continued and took him into a career in music.

Cyan Traces was formed in 2009 and the personnel have remained constant, all highly regarded amongst the most eminent players of all styles in the Anglia region. Tom Harris (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) Alex

Oh, we have had our fill of “Figgy Duff”. The ‘Three Kings’ have been sent back to their Persian Lands, ‘The Lamb’ is back in the box and “Frosty The Snowman” has gone away (well almost). So if like me, your have that New Year feeling of wanting to lose a few pounds and exercise, then come join the Cantamus regime - exercise those vocal chords and burn the calories in song and laughter.

Happily 2015 is taking Cantamus on a choral trip through English music from madrigals to Victorian part songs to a cappella – such wonderful delights as ‘Seal Lullaby’ , the ethereal 'Sure on this Shining Night' and rousing anthems e.g. “Zadok The Priest” and “I was Glad”, sung at the wedding of Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.

“Only came to sing the Messiah; 4 years later I am still here!” “Singing is great for my well-being – its fantastic relaxation. The laughter is an added bonus.” “I don’t read music, but since everyone helps each other I quickly felt part of the choir. I love it!”

Our members come from Sheringham to Stalham, Mundesley to Aylsham. So if transport is a problem a lift share may be possible. No auditions are required. With mixed ability singers, you’ll be surprised how soon you become part of the team.

For more information please contact David on 07785 782498. We look forward to singing and laughing with you - Thursday 7.30pm in Southrepps Church.

of our friends at The Grove Hotel’.

Ruth from The Grove Hotel, and Ollie’s auntie, said ‘Thank you very much for all the donations that were collected at Cromer Pier’. She continued ‘we have been absolutely amazed at the generosity of all the people who have supported Ollie and Birmingham Children's Hospital. Ollie hopes to come back to Cromer, his favourite holiday destination, next year if he is well enough. Thanks on behalf of The Graveling family to Cromer Pier for their help in raising such a great amount’.”

When Father Christmas went to see the afternoon performance of The Cromer Christmas Show on Sunday 21 December he also had in his mind a 9-year-old boy named Ollie who is undergoing cancer treatment at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Ollie and his family regularly holiday in Cromer with their relatives who own The Grove Hotel on Overstrand Road.

After judging the best dressed Christmas couple from the audience Father Christmas asked them all to dig deep and support Ollie’s fund-raising appeal to raise money for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital ward to make things more comfortable for the children who, like Ollie, are undergoing chemotherapy.

Thanks to the generosity of the audience and other donations Ollie’s fund-raising appeal is now totalling an amazing £5,308.

Cromer Pier General Manager, Rebecca Wass said ‘We have such a great audience and it is wonderful that they have helped us support a family member

Mike Page and Pauline Young A new book from Poppyland Publishing

down to see many more from a very different angle. Mike’s photos feature regularly in the local press and this new title makes a fascinating addition to the range of books he has already produced.

Mike has been flying and taking photographs for over 40 years. The combination of these skills enables him to make the most of the opportunities when weather and in particular light are right for the cameraman. His collection of aerial photographs now extends to over a 100,000 images and he is confident there will be more books to come. For Poppyland Publishing, he has already made valuable contributions to Maritime Norfolk Part 2 and to the new history of Wells next the Sea, where pictures from above very much add to the story being told.

Pauline Young’s text does not seek to cover exhaustively the history of each building but provokes interest through some facts and figures and guides us to other information sources. The book notes the intention of the church builders to reach for the heavens, whilst providing markers to those journeying across the county. The towers and the bells called the faithful together - little could those congregations have imagined looking down

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although we closed for re-homing over the Christmas break to allow our fosterers (who are all volunteers) an opportunity to spend some time with their families, we were very busy just before and also after the holiday period. Several of the cats and kittens were re-homed before Christmas. Others went to their new homes after the Christmas break because their new families were having visitors and it would not be the ideal time to introduce a new cat or kitten to their new home. This has continued into the New Year with several more cats and kittens being either re-homed or reserved.

One of our long term residents, namely Dash, is one of the cats re-homed since the beginning of the year. This dear little girl, one of the many black cats we have recently found new homes for, was very stressed when she came into care and took some time to settle and gain confidence. Part of the problem had been living in a home with other cats so we knew that she needed to be the only cat in the household. Although other people had been to see her she had not let them see what a delightful girl she was. However, when her new family came she had responded positively to their attentions and before too long was happy to sit on the gentleman’s lap in her pen. Dash had obviously made up her mind that this was her family and is now very happy in her new home.

The cats and kittens that remain in care range in age from 1 month old to 15 years. They include some of our longer term residents who will need homes with experienced cat people, plus the kittens, most of which are either black or white. Working with cats you tend not to worry about what colour it is but what is its temperament and character. However, whatever their colour or temperament we do love them all, even the naughty ones.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

Chicago

Noel was born outside, one of 7 kittens in a litter. A lovely friendly little boy

The Auden Theatre in Holt took on the atmosphere of a 1920s American speakeasy, staging a story of amoral characters singing and dancing their way through a dark comedy of jealousy, crime and showbiz in Gresham’s Senior School’s production of Chicago in December.

In the words of the Master of Ceremonies, Chicago, is a “story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery.” From these opening lines, the audience were really drawn into the seedy world of murder with a stunningly underscore of jazz. The cast of eighty provided audiences with four sell-out nights of superb entertainment, in what was a demanding and Kitty Combe (Holt) complex school musical. The set was laid out in cabaret style with an art deco backdrop which transported the audience back to the roaring twentys.

Principal singers and dancers went above and beyond in true Gresham’s style to give the production its extra razzle dazzle and the superb chorus dealt with the challenging timings of the show.

The audience came away buzzing from the show which was a real reflection of some of the amazing talent amongst the pupils.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

The Society’s year ended with our traditional Christmas social where as well as the usual pleasantries and opportunity to catch up on a very busy and successful year, we were pleased to welcome Alison Cushing who gave us a demonstration of flower arranging with, inevitably, a Christmas theme. Alison put together a table arrangement and a wreath that to the uninitiated seemed simple to make but were stunning in their impact. Moira Harding and Betty Hastings were the lucky members to win the arrangements in our raffle.

We look forward to 2015 with eager anticipation. Our programme secretary has put together a series of talks on clematis, sweet peas, plants for shady areas and orchids. We will be having a Gardeners’ Question Time in

April which is early enough in the year to put any advice to good use. We have our annual open Spring Show on 10 and 11 April and members only shows in June and September. In June we will be taking part in the annual gardening quiz with our friends from Sheringham and Hoveton/Wroxham.

In May we will be having our annual plant sale. Each summer we organise visits to gardens, some of which are not normally open to the general public, for example last year we visited West Barsham Hall Gardens near Fakenham. As you can see it promises to be busy year.

Membership of the society costs £10 a year and for this members have free entry to our meetings and shows. We meet on the second

A Christmas Concert - Review

Table arrangement made by Alison Cushing at our December meeting Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Anyone interested in joining can get details from our chairman, Jack Andrews, on 01263 514399. You will be made most welcome.

The Cromer Orchestra and Cantamus Choir Cromer Parish Hall

The programme opened with the orchestra playing Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival, certainly a festive piece, augmented by popular carols.

Howard Blake’s Walking in the Air - Blake wrote 600 pieces - but only one being popular, namely Walking in the Air.

The choir joined the orchestra in performing two pieces by John Rutter, Shepherds Pipe Carol and Jesus Child.

David Ballard, the Cantamus choir master, conducted an unaccompanied performance of The Lamb by John Taverner, a piece with unconventional harmonies which was often dissonant, but thankfully resolving the progressions. This was an ambitious choice for this choir who were not at ease with its demands.

The next orchestral piece - Brindisi by Verdi, exposed that the orchestra was more confident when the choir performed with them and vice versa.

After the interval, pieces by A W Benoy Scherzo for Christmas, Sleigh Ride Leroy

Anderson, John Rutter’s All Things Bright and Beautiful - choir and orchestra. Then Bob Chilcott’s Jesu Springing for choir, accompanied by piano.

The last piece The Penny Whistle Song by Leroy Anderson, brought the concert to an end - after which the almost capacity audience were invited to sing along with the orchestra and choir, favourite carols.

Norman Moor’s dedication in forming the Cromer Orchestra was made obvious with his energetic conducting, but the overall performance of the orchestra would have been much improved, regarding intonation, had the instrumentalists tuned in, as a whole, before playing.

The choir - larger in number - really ought to work on their projection, especially when the orchestra is placed in front. Also cosmetically, to look as though they enjoy singing.

However, the response from the audience to each item added to an enjoyable festive event.

A dazzler of a display Continued from front cover...

Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 15-minute extravaganza explode in the skies and on the surface of the sea.

Over 400 fireworks produced 2000 bursts of stars and special effects culminating in a silver red and gold finale fired from the whole length of the pier.

Clive Casburn from Premiere Fireworks said “the display has become, for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier has proved a marvellous setting. Conditions remained good throughout the day - it only started raining just after the show. I don’t think Cromer has seen so many people for the New Year’s Day fireworks. The show went well especially the water shells on the mill pond sea.

Local attractions and traders opened up their shops, eateries, museums and businesses on, what is now, one of the town’s busiest days of the year.

A record £9,500 was collected from the crowd which will be spent on next year’s display with donations given to local Cromer charities.

For the third year running the organisers are running a Photography Competition which is open to adults aged 17+ who attended the event.

The winner will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2016 New Years Day Firework event, as well as use in other promotional material. Local electrical retailer Hughes Plus are to offer the winner the latest Samsung 40 led TV worth £400.

Manager of Hughes Plus in Cromer, Simon Morton said “we are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to support such a spectacular local event as the New Year’s Day Firework display. We felt the prize should reflect this and encouraged ‘snappers’ to get snapping and produce some great local images!

Chair of Cromer Fireworks Committee Jim Bond said, “I hope everybody had a good new year and enjoyed the fireworks. It was nice to see the town so busy

with people enjoying a day out. I would like to thank everyone involved in making this year’s display a great success again, and in helping to raise £9,500. Any local group interested in a small grant should contact Cromer Town Council.

Thanks again to St John Ambulance, the Police, and Fire Brigade, Cromer Museum, the pier management, NNDC and the many collectors. A special thank you to St Peter and St Paul’s Church for use of the church, for refreshments and a warm seat.

Particular thanks to Premier Fireworks, who again put on a very special and impressive display, receiving many favourable comments on the night. The setting of Cromer Pier makes this a unique display.

The publicity provided by the media, and local radio stations, is very much appreciated in letting everyone know the ‘what’ and ‘where’. And finally to all the extremely generous folk who have donated this year, See you next year. Photos: Dave Hubba Roberts

Make a New Years’ Resolution to support the nook appeal

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is calling upon the people of Norfolk to make an extra special New Years’ resolution for 2015 to support the nook appeal.

The nook appeal was launched on 25 November in the presence of the charity’s Royal Patron, The Duchess of Cambridge, outlining the vision for a new purpose-built children’s hospice which will cost £10m to build and equip. The new hospice will replace the current facility in Quidenham which is extremely restricted in its facilities and development.

There are many ways in which you can make New Years’ resolutions which not only benefit you as an individual, but also the many life-threatened children, young people and their families who will benefit from your fundraising efforts.

Getting healthy is always top of the list, and there’s plenty of ways to do it and raise vital funds. You could get sponsored to go on a diet, give up smoking or drinking alcohol and you could also donate the money you save to the appeal too.

As well as abstaining, you could get active by taking part in a challenge to improve your fitness and there’s plenty to choose from: • Great East Anglia Run – King’s Lynn, 3 May

• EACH Ride for Life – Thetford Forest, 14 June

• London to Paris Bike Ride, 22 - 25 July

• Hold a coffee morning in aid of the nook appeal.

• Have a clear out at home and hold a car boot sale and donate the proceeds to the nook appeal.

• Organise a dress down day where you work and donate the proceeds to the nook appeal.

• Trek Fest The Peaks, 5 – 6 September (Global Adventure Challenges)

• City of Norwich Half Marathon 22 November

• Norwich Santa Run – Dec 2015

EACH are hosting three very special events this year with more planned as the year progresses. The EACH Colour Dash which will bring a colour explosion to the county as participants are showered with coloured powdered paint as they complete a 5km run. The nook appeal skydive will see participants experiencing free fall from 12,000ft reaching speeds of 120 mph while the nook 25/50/100 Bike Ride on September 6th will see cyclists getting in the saddle for the cause.

If you fancy something a little less active then why not commit to doing one of the following: • Have a collection pot at home and collect up your loose change for the nook appeal.

Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust set to leave busiest point in the year. This departure is likely to make things worse especially as we are only now

The part-time Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust is to depart from the organisation earlier than planned with the board advertising his post just 11 months after he launched his two-year turnaround plan.

Anthony Marsh was hired by the Trust earlier this year to improve poor ambulance response times and to restore trust in our local ambulance service. However improvements have been slower than expected with more varied response times in North Norfolk and with national media attention over Mr Marsh's pay packet. There had also been concerns about Mr Marsh running two ambulance trusts on d ifferent sides of the country at the same time.

entering the winter period where pressures are growing and we need strong leadership. We know from two years ago what happens if there isn't the strong leadership at difficult times. In North Norfolk our response times remain the worst in the region and our residents deserve better. Worsening response times are now not exclusive to Norfolk and the picture across the country is not rosy particularly with the issues in Accident and Emergency. Health ministers need to act as well as the Trust. I hope they will take time to find a replacement for Mr Marsh to ensure it is well-led and well-managed, and delivering a quality, reliable, and timely service."

Paternalism –v- Empowerment Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Many decades ago the section of the court system that then dealt with those who were mentally incapable was the Chancery Division of the High Court which was said to deal with ‘wills, wives and wrecks’. In other words, probate matters (as now), matrimonial issues (now dealt with by their own court called The Family Court), and shipping matters. The ‘wrecks’ were maritime rather than human. Cases relating to those without mental capacity were headed ‘In Lunacy’. That was an age of paternalism; and not always very benign.

Gradually the law in relation to those lacking mental capacity entered a world of kinder paternalism where others knew best and the mentally incapable were treated almost as children.

The landscape has yet again changed and we are now in a culture where those lacking mental capacity are to be ‘empowered’ wherever possible to make decisions with whatever means and support is available. The practical effect on those managing the affairs of those without mental capacity, whether by a Power of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) or as a Court-appointed ‘Deputy’ is significant.

The terminology of the Court and its

administrative system is only slowly catching up with the new ethos. The administrative head of the system is called ‘The Public Guardian’ (which even though I have been dealing with his office for more than 20 years still carries ‘caped-crusader’ connotations for me).

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is approaching its tenth birthday. By this a person is to be assumed to have mental capacity and to be able to make their own decisions unless it is established that they do not. They are to be helped to make as many of their own decisions as possible by those managing their affairs. And just because someone does not make a wise decision it does not mean that they are to be treated as incapable of making a decision. It is reassuring to know that even in 2014 the law enshrines the right of an English man or woman to be eccentric.

Strand Club - Overstrand

A wonderful Christmassy afternoon was had by all in December. Rosemary and her entertainers gave us a marvellous show including a very funny reading of one of Pam Ayres' poems.

Members laid on a beautiful spread which everyone enjoyed and this included a spectacular Christmas cake made and decorated by Glo. Jackie made a lovely festive flower arrangement which was raffled and won by Josie, and the church looked welcoming and warm with all its candles and greenery.

A small deputation visited our former Chair, Joyce Mahoney, on her birthday . She is well-loved and respected and is greatly missed at our meetings. It is hoped she will feel well enough to return in the not too distant future.

For those who haven't visited our club and would like to, please come along to hear and see Laura Duncan on 11 February. She will talk about the Fitness League past and present and demonstrate some exercises, which should prove to be very interesting and will give a well-timed opportunity to work away a few excess Christmas pounds!

The entrance fee of £1.50 for non-members includes a raffle ticket and refreshments. Please do come - you would be most welcome. We meet at 2.30pm in the Methodist Church in Overstrand.

For further information please phone either Chris Wood on 579433 or Glo Begley on 576539.

A healthy and safe New Year to everyone.

Overstrand Evening WI

Cromer WI

We started the December meeting on a sad note. We held a minute silence after hearing of the passing of Madelon Parsons who had been ill for a short time. Madelon was our longest serving member and will be sorely missed.

At our well-attended Annual Meeting in November, President and Committee members were elected for the forthcoming year. The group’s Financial Statement for the year was adopted and prizes were presented to winners of the 2014 Competition. This was followed by the Chairman’s Challenge, to raise funds for new chairs in County office. There was a break for refreshments with assorted cakes, to celebrate the group’s 31st Birthday, before the meeting continued with reports and local, county and national correspondence.

The meeting was then opened by a performance of Robin Pud or “The Sheriff gets his Just Desserts”. It was performed by our own Shoestring Players and enjoyed by all. There were lots of laughs, boos & hisses and even the audience joined in with our own rendition of “My Favourite Things”.

After a break for tea and cakes we had the meeting.

We had a very successful day with our Christmas Tree, Nativity scene and Stall in the church for the Christmas Festivities. Irene Nutt won first place for her Nativity scene and it will be auctioned off at the meeting this month. Our President, Glenice Knight, will be taking part in the Boxing Day dip to raise funds mainly to help us take part in the Carnival next year when the WI will be 100 years old. The competition of a miniature Christmas tree was won by Hazel Patrickson, with Moira Harding second and Yvonne Mileham third. Instead of a speaker we will have a cookery demonstration in January and Icarus Hines will be in to talk to us in February. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

The venue for our December Christmas lunch was The Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel, where members enjoyed dishes pre-selected from their varied menu. With one long table in the restaurant, conversation flowed and the lunch was rounded off with a dip into the gift packed bran tub.

We now look forward to the New Year with events, outings, speakers and above all friendship. Don’t forget; we welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don’t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

Dear Margaret,

Once again please could I ask your readers to save their Christmas stamps for me for the various charities that I support. Many thanks.

Yours sincerely, Miss Jayne Manning , 111 Mill Road, Cromer NR27 0AD

Wear a jumper for charity

Staff and pupils at Gresham’s Nursery and Pre-Prep School in Holt celebrated the last day of the Christmas term by joining in with a national campaign to wear a Christmas jumper for a day.

The ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ which took place on 12 December was launched by Save the Children and encouraged people to wear a jumper for a day and make a ÂŁ1 donation for doing so. Both children and staff wore all manner of festive jumpers to support the campaign and were delighted to raise ÂŁ167.35 in the process.

Janette Davidson, Headmistress said “We were delighted to host this event for Save the Children, as well as raising money, everyone had great fun dressing up.

Dear Margaret,

I would like, through your publication, to thank Mr Tim Bennett, his family and others for the tremendous amount of work they have put in through the year to commemorate those from the village of Overstrand who fell in WW1.

By pure coincidence I got involved in as much as my great uncle William R England was one of those who fell, but through the year I have learnt so much about him that I could never have imagined as these things weren't spoken of in my younger days. I became involved via various family photos, medals and memories of my father’s family that I had. William was also the FACE on the many posters and banners around the area and it was most overwhelming to me when driving into Overstrand - I feel so proud.

The exhibition in August, then the Remembrance services and before Christmas the St Martin’s Church Community Christmas Carol Service, which incorporated the Silent Night Truce of 1914 - what a service. I don't think many other churches can say a touch of football was played in the aisles. It really was an outstanding service.

What a year it has been for me so again I would like to say a big thank you Tim. Yours sincerely, Mrs Susan Cowling (nee England)

Dear Margaret,

For the past two years, my wife and I have organised a Tabletop/Craft sale in the St. John Ambulance Hall in Cromer. This has turned out to be so popular that that venue is now too small for all our regular stall-holders. We have now re-located to the Parish Hall in Church Street, Cromer and will be resuming sales in March, being held monthly with two in August and three in December.

Those who know the venue will be aware that there is a nice space outside the front door of the hall - to the left as you look from the pavement. This space would be ideal for a charity or local good cause to set up a fund-raising stall on our sale days. This space we offer free to one of these organisations who would like to make use of the opportunity to make some much needed cash.

If anyone is interested, please contact either myself, Tony, or my wife Sue for details on 01263 649441.

We are unable to supply tables, but we have plenty of chairs!

Regards, Tony Archer

PC Simple - On the Move

When Clive and Berni Sanham opened their first computer shop in Co-operative Street they never imagined how busy it would become in three short years. Since opening, the business has gone from strength to strength and now employs three full-time staff. Shortly after opening, Jon Hayman started as an apprentice (at Level 3) and rapidly developed a good rapport with customers, embracing PCSimple’s policy of delivering exceptional customer service. Jon passed his apprenticeship with flying colours and is now an important part member of the businessteam.

Reassuringly tasty, nutritious and dependable.

As more customers heard about the shop via wordof-mouth, Clive soon found that he needed someone to help with administration. Fortunately, his daughter Nikki, who had recently graduated with an Occupational Therapy Degree from the UEA, stepped in to help out and is now an essential part of the business. As the work increased it was again apparent that more staff were required and Scott Raddon, who had been volunteering while at school, signed on as a level two apprentice; this is ongoing and PCSimple is looking forward to keeping him as a full-timer if he passes.

With the amount of business being conducted, and increased staffing, it soon became apparent that there was hardly any room left for customers and Clive started looking for alternative premises within his budget. Finally, a suitable venue was found. PCSimple will soon be moving to its new site at 44E Station Road. Clive and all the staff are looking forward to having ‘space to breathe’. Clive is particularly happy to get his own work area at last and customers will be appreciative of the space as well.

of the month will we see a temporary rise.

It won't be long after Christmas that our weather will turn colder and that will set a pattern for January with high pressure never too far away but temperatures below average (5c) for much of the month only towards the end

February will see a mix of weather and temperatures with the chance of a warm spell mid month before temperatures return to average (7c) or below.

March will be generally unsettled with a notable colder spell 14th to 20th and thereafter, as the sun is getting stronger, any days with a little more warmth will set off heavy showers.

In summary a mixed three months with temperatures below normal for a greater amount of the time.

Medically supervised weight loss – lose inches but preserve muscle mass and skin elasticity

Obesity is a major worldwide issue. It puts us at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, some cancers and a large number of other medical problems. Unfortunately some of us struggle to achieve weight loss without any help. Rapid weight loss achieved by crash diets can be temporary and result also in muscle loss and saggy skin.

We have devised a weight loss program in conjunction with the Pronokal system which is a very effective physiological form of treatment for achieving weight loss. It is based on reduction of carbohydrates and fats and utilising protein sources. We see weight loss but preservation of muscle mass and skin tone. We also use external ultrasound to melt difficult to reach areas of fat under the skin. The treatment plan includes a customised dietary program. It is conducted under medical supervision and complemented by a multidisciplinary team of professionals

(registered dieticians, psychological adviser and personal trainer).

Typically 80% of target weight is achieved in the first stage of the treatment programme – 7 to 10kg weight loss in a month is not unusual. We also use ultrasound cavitation and radio frequency machine to mobilise fat cells from diet and exercise resistant body areas to achieve weight reduction. We recommend a minimum of six sessions, once every 2-3 weeks.

Welcoming his selection at a recent meeting of the North Norfolk Green Party, Mike said "I am delighted to offer the Green message of hope for our County, our countryside and our people. Faith in people to act locally and to live with global awareness has never been more vital. We need to share, listen and act to preserve our local health services, schools for our children, precious natural sites and species/landscape, while not forgetting the wider world and all its peoples. Let's vote FOR what we share as people and with the world around us."

Toll Barn Goes Global Over Goldfish Owner of constipated goldfish splashes out on life-saving operation at local vets.

Perhaps the strangest Headline and sub-head that you are likely to see!

But the story below is all true... and was picked up by TV companies in UK including the BBC and then it went global, with Toll Barn owner Faye Bethell fielding enquiries and being interviewed on radio from companies all over the world as far as China.

a tube through its mouth and over its gills, and a second nurse monitored the patient with a probe to check his heart rate," Miss Bethell said. Using a miniature heart-rate monitor, Miss Bethell checked that the fish was properly “under” before using a mini scalpel to remove the lumps. Tiny instruments were used to

Read on... We all love our pets but one local goldfish owner has certainly demonstrated his affection by spending £300 on a life saving operation to relieve his fish of constipation.

The owner took his poorly fish to Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham where vet Faye Bethell told him it was constipated and an operation would cost about £300.

The goldfish was constipated because he had a lump blocking his bottom, rather than because of his diet or any other reason," said Miss Bethell.

The operation, which took almost an hour, was performed by Miss Bethell, assisted by two veterinary nurses.

‘One nurse bubbled anaesthetic gas through

remove one lump close to the fish’s anus and another from its dorsal fin. She then sewed each cut with three stitches, finally using a special ‘glue’ to cover and waterproof the fish’s scales before it was gradually re-awakened.

"Obviously, we discussed all the options with the owner and he made the decision to go for surgery’ she said. The goldfish was kept wet throughout the operation.

Since opening Toll Barn vets, which specialises

in exotics as well as the more usual pets, a year ago Miss Bethell has performed a varied range of operations including removing a skin tumour from a two-inch long hognose snake which weighed just 12g, taking out a stone from the 5mm-wide ureter of a guinea pig, treating sugar gliders (a gliding possum) for a poor diet and a degu (a large rat-like rodent) for diabetes, removing an air-rifle pellet discovered lodged under the skin during a routine booster jab check from a Mundesley cat, working with wildlife rescue groups to save an injured sparrowhawk which has since been successfully released into the wild, spending Boxing Day operating to remove a corn on the cob which had got trapped in a dog’s intestines, as well as making a puppy vomit after it had eaten its owner’s pills and most recently castrating a skunk named Cadbury.

“There was nothing special about the fish. The owner just liked it a lot. At the end of the day they are all pets and everybody does have a commitment to their pet," Miss Bethell said, adding ‘but that was an expensive little goldfish’.

‘It’s been an absolutely brilliant year with lovely clients and lovely animals, it has exceeded my expectations and I can’t believe the variety we have had’.

to be considered.

The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year.

BAKER AT THE DOUBLE!

Forty nine year old John Baker, who in November last year won Cromer Squash Club’s Over 35 tournament , became Club Veterans champion for the first time in December as he beat John Chandler, who was appearing in his first ever final at the club, 9-3 9-2 9-2.

errors which handed the initiative to his younger opponent and Baker took the opening game 9-3 as he won eleven of the next thirteen rallies.

All classes £5, or 10 for £40

All classes drop-in (except Saturday Workshop). The Saturday Workshop costs £18. For more details please call Beth Lea on 07443 858005

The third game followed a similar pattern. Baker again opened up a 5-0 lead and although Chandler briefly recovered to make the score 2-5 Baker won five successive points to win the game 9-2 and the match 3-0.

It is thirty years since Baker won his first title at the club when he won the club Handicap tournament and after two more handicap victories and four club championships he has now become the first player to have won all four titles – an achievement which is unlikely to be equalled for some considerable time.

Chandler, who is one of the oldest players at the club and was in fact the oldest player taking part in the tournament is no stranger to tournament play having narrowly lost, earlier this year, in the semi-finals of both the Over 60 and Over 65 events at the Norfolk Closed Championships but he found that having to give nineteen years to his opponent was a step too far.

Baker was in fact runner-up in this tournament last year and after a cagey opening in which the serve moved to and fro it was Chandler who opened up a 3-1 lead and looked as though he might be on course to cause an upset. Sadly for him, however, this was as good as it got as he made a series of unforced

Yoga & Pilates with Beth

Baker dominated the second game from the start and eased his way into a 5-0 lead before his relentless pressure told and he took the game 9-2 to open up an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Tues 20 Jan – 10.30am - Cromer/East Runton Walk –

Grade 3 – Approx. 3 miles – A walk with moderate gradients on dirt, gravel, grass and minor roads. Meet at the NNDC Car Park, (Parking charges apply),

Technical Director Barry Starling who was among the large crowd which watched the final from the balcony said ”Johnny B thoroughly deserved his victory. He still hits the ball as cleanly as anybody in the club and John C knew that he had to try and take the pace off the ball and go for winning drop shots. Unfortunately for him this was a high risk strategy and he did make too many mistakes to give himself a realistic chance”
