Battle of Britain Parade thrills Cromer

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

At least two thousand people surrounded Cromer promenade for the ceremonial event which honoured the men and women who served in the Battle of Britain against Germany, which finished on September 9th 1940. The crowd watched nine Royal Air Force Association standard bearers, who formed a guard of honour, the Royal Air Force Regiment band and service personnel from RAF Marham. And there was a magnificent flypast by the Sptfire shown in the photo opposite. The parade is organised by the council but could not realistically by held at the usual venue at County Hall because of scaffolding work at the council headquarters. but took place in Cromer at the request of Mrs Cox . She inspected the service personnel with Wing Commander Neil Tomlin from RAF Marham. Cromer town crier, Jason Bell, ended the parade which was followed by a service in Cromer Parish Church. Perhaps the success will persuade the council to move the ceremony around Norfolk county to others towns. Photos courtesy David Abbott and Andy Roberts
