A

frica is a construction site; a huge construction site that attracts investors from around the world. Trillions of dollars are injected into Africa, resulting in many companies and factories. But the results are slow in coming. The average consumer’s breadbasket remains very light even while she keeps on grumbling about her situation.

Poverty and insecurity are endemic. Hope is being lost. African populations see hell where others see an Eldorado.

Driven by desperation, many people chose to flee the continent to seek refuge and a better life in Europe or elsewhere. They risk everything to cross the Mediterranean Sea, often in makeshift boats, imperiling their lives in order to live.

Every single day, dead bodies of African men, women and children show up on European shores while African authorities remain staggeringly indifferent. We all acknowledge that immigration is a natural phenomenon. But at the rate things are going, if the bleeding is not stopped in time, in a few years there will only be widows and orphans left on the African continent. And yet, we are only talking here about immigration and have not mentioned numerous casualties that occur due to internal conflict.

Corruption, cronyism and tribalism prevent the continent from making a fresh start. Much of the basis for a sane economy of a country, its “human resources”, is neglected in favor of a minority of people whose primary concern is to enrich each other, and the consequences have been terrible!

Undeniably, Africa has the human and financial resources to meet its needs. It has some of the most fertile farmlands in the world, wide spaces, powerful rivers, abundant and diverse fauna & flora: a true paradise. Unfortunately, in several regions, this paradise has been turned into hell due to neglect and clan type management of public affairs.

In the 21st century, it is not uncommon to find, in several African countries, school classrooms without benches or desks and the students have to sit on the ground.

Yet these very countries export timber to America, Asia and Europe. Why wait for assistance from the West to manufacture school benches and desks for the education of our children?

Africans must “dream of a new Africa”. They must reclaim their continent and stop perceiving it as hell. They must undertake to create and help each other, and certainly not wait for everything to fall ready made for them from the sky. They must choose their friends and business partners wisely, and they ought to seize the opportunities presented to them.

For this new “African Dream” to become a reality, the elite of the continent must look well beyond their ethnic groups and give everyone a chance to succeed. Someone who makes good business in his country, who sends his children to school, will not need to join a rebel army. This will also encourage the African Diaspora to return and contribute to the development of their continent of origin.

INTERVIEW Dr L’Antoinette Stines, founder and artistic director of L’Acadco

Rendez Vous en Asie によるユナイテッド カリビアンダンスフォース、 L’Acadcoへ 6月、有 名なジャマイカのダンスグループである L’Acadcoが、毎年代々木公園で開催される、 ジャ マイカの音楽、食べ物、文化を楽しめるイベントで あるワンラブフェスティバルでたくさんの人々の前 でパフォーマンスをしました。 このグループはまた、 日本とジャマイカそしてCARICOM（カリブ地域の 15の国から成る組織であるカリビアンコミュニティ ー） と日本の関係の50周年記念のお祝いで、要人た ちをも楽しませました。 当雑誌、Rendez Vous en Asie(RVAM)はL’Acadco の創始者でありアートデ ィレクターであるDr L’Antoinette Stines氏とこの グループのダンサーであるJoanna Simpson氏に インタビューをしました。

n June, renowned Jamaican dance group L’Acadco performed before thousands of people at the One Love festival, an annual event celebrating Jamaican music, food and culture, in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo. The group also entertained dignitaries during 50th anniversary celebrations of Japan-Jamaica diplomatic relations and CARICOM (Caribbean Community, an organization of 15 nations of the Caribbean region) relations with Japan. Rendez Vous en Asie: the Magazine (RVAM) sat down for an interview with Dr L’Antoinette Stines, founder and artistic director of L’Acadco, and Joanna Simpson, a dancer with the group.

RVAM: Dr. Stines and Joanna, welcome to Japan.

Is this your first time to Tokyo?

Dr. Stines: This is my second and [Joanna’s] first, I think.

RVAM: And what do you think about Tokyo?

Joanna: Tokyo is fantastic. It’s very different from Jamaica but strangely very similar (Joanna is from St. Andrews, Jamaica). So it wasn’t very hard to get used to many things.

RVAM: What struck you as the most fun, surprising or interesting thing about Tokyo?

Joanna: I think, for me, the place is very, very clean and the people are extremely polite, ­­ almost too polite (laughs).

RVAM:That’s different compared to Jamaica?

Joanna:Jamaicans are a little bit more assertive. So even if you’re walking down the road in Jamaica and people walk past you, it’s OK: you can walk past me. [But in Tokyo it’s a little different]. Often times I’d look behind me and I’d find someone waiting [to walk past and I’d think]: It’s OK, you can walk past me; let me get out of your way (laughs). But I like Japanese people; they’re nice.

RVAM: Dr. Stinesそして Joanna、 日本にようこそ。東京へ来たの は初めてですか？ Dr. Stines: 私は2回目です。Joanna は初めてだと思います。

Dr. Stines: I’m struck by the Japanese use of space. I’m very into space; and I’m very into architecture and art. I’m for the use of space and yet I go into a mall [in Tokyo] and I see this huge animal [a spider] taking up a lot of space. And the living areas [in Japan] -- they make use of small spaces.

And I think I’ve learnt from it, even how it affects choreography. I mean, Jamaicans are used to vast spaces, mountains and all that, big livingroom areas. I think [Jamaicans] use too much space. Being here makes me think Jamaicans need to use less of it. [Dr.Stines also liked the “beautiful temples” although their busy schedule, only 8 days in Tokyo, did not allow them to travel outside the city].

RVAM:You had an amazing performance at the One Love festival in Yoyogi Park. What is the inspiration behind L’Acadco’s style, which seems to incorporate music, dance and performance art?

Joanna: Well, the inspiration behind what we perform and how we perform is Jamaica, because, as its core, what we seek to represent is Jamaica. [This is especially so] for those [Jamaicans around the world] who have been away from the country for a while: it was important to depict that on stage.

Of course, the artistic wonders of Dr. Stines puts a different complexion on it all. I think it was good for people to see some kumina (Afro­-Jamaican music and dance), to see Dancehall, to feel reggae from Jamaica. It was nice for them to see that.

Dr. Stines: I have put together [different dances traditions of the Caribbean] in one movement structure I call synerbridging ­­that is bridging culture by synergizing movement. So the upper body can be doing “Cuba” and your feet can be doing “Congo”. You can be doing a classical baritone movement while moving your back like a snake. I’m the first person to develop a modern, contemporary dance technique in the English-speaking Caribbean.

RVAM:So how long does it take to learn synerbridging?

Dr. Stines: Years.

Joanna: Let me answer that (laughs). Well, I’ve been at it for about 7 years, but there’s still something left to learn because the challenge, really, is the synerbridging. For every movement structure that you learn, you have to pay full respect to that movement structure in terms of how it is executed, how it is initiated. So for ballet, you need to understand where and how it starts; for yanvalu (a dance from Haiti) you need to understand the same thing as well as understanding which drumming patterns match which movement. It’s all part of the learning process.

RVAM:Your audience at the One Love festival was mainly Japanese, but there were many Jamaicans there, too.

What was the reaction to your performance?

Joanna:I think the reaction from both Japanese and Jamaicans was very endearing because, for the Jamaicans who were singing along to every kumina song, and the Japanese who were singing to every reggae song even though they don’t speak English, it was amazing. And I think most of the things that we see everyday and take to be normal, [the Japanese] think it’s fantastic: the colors of our flag; the kinkiness (sexy curliness) of our hair. Those things they find amazing.

Dr. Stines: The size of [Jamaican] women’s bottoms! [Joanna laughs]

RVAM:代々木公園で開催されたワンラブフェスティバルで のパフォーマンスはとても素晴らしかったです。L’Acadco の音楽とダンスそしてパフォーマンスアートを融合したスタ イルは、 どこからインスピレーションを得ているのですか？ Joanna:私たちのパフォーマンスの内容ややり方は、 ジャマ イカからインスピレーションを得ています。なぜならそれが コアであり、私たちが象徴しようとしているのはジャマイカだ からです。 ジャマイカをしばらく離れた世界中のジャマイカ人 たちの為に、ステージで表現することは重要なことです。皆 がジャマイカからのkumina (アフリカ系ジャマイカンの宗 教、音楽、 ダンス)やダンスホールを目にし、 レゲエを感じるこ とはいいことだと思います。 Dr. Stines: 私は[カリブの異なる伝統的なダンス]を1つの動 きにまとめ、 それを“シナブリッジング”と呼んでいます。つま り、動きにシナジーを与えることにより文化の架け橋となる という意味です。上半身は“キューバ”で足は“コンゴ”という ことです。背中をヘビの様に動かしながらクラシックなバリト ンの動きができます。現代のコンテンポラリーなダンステク ニックを、英語を話すカリブ地域で広めた最初の人物は私 です。 RVAM:シナブリッジングを習得するにはどの位時間がかか りますか？ Dr. Stines: 数年かかります。 Joanna: (笑)私が答えます。私は約7年間続けていますが、 まだ学ぶことがあります。その挑戦自体がシナブリッジン グなのです。学ぶ全ての動きに、 どの様にそれが作られ始 まったのかという観点から最大の尊敬を払わなければ なりません。バレエについて、 どこでどの様に始まったの か、”yanvalu”（ハイチのダンス） についても同様の理解と その動きにマッチしたドラムのパターンへの理解が必要で す。 それら全てが学びの過程の一部なのです。

RVAM:ワンラブフェスティバルでの観客たちの多くは日本 人でしたが、 たくさんのジャマイカ人たちもいました。 あなた 方のパフォーマンスに対する反応はどうでしたか？

Joanna:私は日本人からの反応もジャマイカ人からの反応も 両方ともとても愛情がこもっていると感じました。 ジャマイカ 人たちはkuminaの歌に合わせて歌い、 日本人たちは例え 英語が分からなくてもレゲエの歌に合わせて歌っていまし た。 とても素晴らしかったです！日本人は私たちが日々目に し、普通だと思っていることを素晴らしいと思うみたいです。 私たちの国旗や私たちの髪など、彼らはすごいと思っていま す。 Dr. Stines: ジャマイカ女性のお尻のサイズもね （Joannaか らの止まらない笑） ！ Joanna:今回だけは私は黙ります。

Founded by Dr. L’Antoinette Stines 30 years ago, L’Acadco has toured around the world, including North and Central America, Europe, Africa and now Asia. While based in Jamaica, the group is made of nationals from right across the Caribbean islands and countries, including Cuba, Surinam, and Barbados. The group has also had a Japanese member, a dancer called Fumiko. L’Acadco is made of musicians, dancers, poets, and other performance artists.

Joanna:For once, I’m [stunned into] silence.

Dr. Stines: But you know, I must admit that I’m a little disturbed that although I was the first to put Dancehall on stage in Jamaica many years ago, my company isn’t a Dancehall company. We’re a contemporary dance company that blends the Dancehall [with other forms]. We are truly “Out of many, one people” ­­Jamaica’s national motto. In Jamaica we have a British influence, the Chinese, Indian and African influence. The African influence is dominant, but what we produce on stage is [a combination of all those influences] on the body. And when [Joanna] said kumina; kumina is a Congolese [Central Africa] retention in Jamaica. There are still people in Jamaica that speak Congo. The Jamaicans that are excited [to hear our performances reflect] that heavy, traditional rhythm that belongs to us [all]. So when a Jamaican that has never been home in many years just hears “toodooom, toodoop”, [he or she thinks, “Whoa; dem playin’ kumina!” You know, our performance is not pre­recorded; it is played live. A man was brought to tears listening to us and he said, “You know, I can’t believe dem playin’ kumina.” I think the people listening were also excited by the way the choreography was done, because it’s not what [they’re] used to seeing representing Jamaica. There is this clichéd belief of Jamaicans as only performing Dancehall, and that is an important part of our culture, please don’t misunderstand me, but it is only one part of our culture. So we’re hoping that those who saw us would have seen some of the other sides of Jamaica.

RVAM:This is the first time in Asia for some of the rest of the L’Acadco group (approximately 15 members came to Tokyo).

Where will the group perform next?

Dr. Stines: We have some big performances in Jamaica and then three weeks later we’ll be performing in China. You know, we have a saying in patois which means some place is far; we say it’s “pharr.” So Japan is “pharr”; China is “pharr.” It took us three days of travelling to arrive in Tokyo. But we’re very happy to be here and happy to hear about your magazine (RVAM).

RVAM: Before you leave, can you send a special message to our readers, especially the Japanese and Jamaican ones?

Dr. Stines: I do believe that, through the years, Japan and Jamaica has developed a love relationship, and I am very proud of that love relationship. One of the chairmen of the One Love festival said, “At the UN [United Nations], Japan and Jamaica sit together.” When the Olympics were held here in Tokyo [1964], it was the first time Jamaica entered the Olympics. I see more red, green and gold [Jamaica’s national colors] in Japan than I see in my own country. So I hope and know this relationship can become deeper, and while [Joanna] said [Japan] is very different, it’s also very similar [to Jamaica]. I do believe I want more Japanese to visit Jamaica, too. Jamaica is a very beautiful country. And Japan is a beautiful country to visit, too.

RVAM:Dr. Stines, Joanna Simpson, thank you very much for speaking to RVAM: the Magazine.

この新しい物語では、若い日本人の熱心な動物 愛護の支持者であるユリが、彼女が数ヶ月前に ケニアを訪れた際に出会ったマサイ族の首長で あるチェックをもてなします。 ケニアでの最高の思い出をよみがえらせる為、 ユ リは彼女の新しい友達、 チェックを富士山のふも とにある富士サファリパークに連れていくことに しました。チェックは今までカンガルーを見たこ とが無いということを覚えておいて下さい。 また、 富士山のふもとに行ったのも初めてで、 すぐに彼 は自分の国のキリマンジャロと比べます。 この2人はとても気が合う様です。 それはロマン スの始まりでしょうか？ ここから最初のエピソードです。 In this new story, Yuri, a young Japanese girl and fervent animals rights advocate, welcomes Chuck, a Chief of the Maasai tribe, who she met during a visit to Kenya some months earlier.

Yuri decides to take her new friend Chuck to visit Fuji Safari Park, at the foot of Mt Fuji. Note that Chuck has never seen a kangaroo in his life.

It will also be a first for him at the foot of Mt Fuji, which will remind him immediately of Mt Kilimanjaro, Kenya. The friends seem to get on very well. Is this the beginning of a romance? Here is the first episode.

How do you feel, Chuck?

You will like it. There are many animals: lions, giraffes, elephants, bears, tigers, rhino, and even kangaroos.

Un photographe travaillant pour Paris-Match devait faire des photos d’un gigantesque incendie de forêt dans le midi. Il appelle l’aéroport de Nice et demande un pilote. On lui répond qu’un Cessna avec son pilote seront prêts à l’emmener sur place dans deux heures.

Deux heures plus tard, le photographe est sur le tarmac et trouve le Cessna et son pilote qui l’attendent. Il monte dans l’avion et crie: - Allons-y!

Alors le pilote du Cessna met le moteur en marche, va se mettre face au vent et décolle.

Il y a quelques années, un jeune homme va voir un paysan, et lui achète un âne pour 100 F (je vous l’avais dit, c’est il y a quelques années, on parlait encore de francs).
