A

man who has been in Japan for several years, our guest of the month is a French Professor in Tokyo and also a theater director. In this interview, Professor Martinel, a native from the French island of Martinique, opens his heart about his professional and cultural activities in Japan. As a sales representative for “Rhum Héritiers Madkaud”, he will also teach us more about rum, and the many different ways in which we can enjoy it.

何年かを日本に滞在されている教授が今月の私たちのゲストです。東京のフランス語の教授であり、 また劇場の ディレクターでもあります。 フランス領のマルティニーク島のご出身であり、 Martinel教授はこのインタビューの 中で、教授の日本でのお仕事と文化的活動について胸襟を開いて語っています。Rhum Héritiers Madkaud社 のセールス責任者として、教授はラムの魅力をたくさん語って下さり、私たちがラムを楽しむためのたくさんの異 なる方法を教えていただきます。

Here is the interview RVAM: Professor Martinel, could you please tell us about your position as a sales representative for “Rhum Héritiers Madkaud AOC” in Japan.

RVAM:Martinel教授、 Martinel教授、 日本でRhum Héritiers Madkaud 社のAOCとして活躍される教授のセールス責任者と しての立場をお聞かせいただけますか？

Louis-Solo Martinel: As a sales representative for “Rhum Héritiers Madkaud” in Asia, my mission is to promote the brand in Japan and around Asia. The adventure began 3 years ago whereby; our Japanese distributor (Three Rivers) did a great job because products are now being distributed in shops, bars and restaurants. We also participate in major events featuring rum such as Japan Rum Connection (Kanto, Kansai), Yokohama Rum Festival, Japan Caricom, Caribbean Street, and rum parties. We also organize our own events for professionals or the general public. We want more people to discover our products (white, old, VSOP) and to appreciate the many different ways to enjoy them: long-drink (with juice, soda, cola, and milk), traditional short-drink (dry, ti-punch, old).

At the same time, we hope to introduce a bit of Martinique’s culture along with its gastronomy. A beautiful product in sublime elegance such as rum must be presented together with the land where it comes from, its culture, its food, and its atmosphere. Many professionals throughout Japan have already opted for our Madkaud rums and serve them to Japanese and foreign customers in a variety of cocktails, accompanied with food, cigars, coffee, music, ambiance, so that it enhances the tasting. One could say that I am an Ambassador for Rum and my home country is Martinique that I love!

RVAM:What brought you to Japan?

と同時に、私たちは美食を通してマルテ ィニークの文化を紹介したいと望んで います。 ラムのような極上で優雅なこの 美しい製品を、 それが作られた場所、 フ ード、雰囲気とともに皆様にご紹介でき たらと考えています。 日本中のたくさんの 業者の方には、 すでにわたしたちのラム 「Madkaud 」 を楽しんでいただいてい ます。 そして日本の一般の皆様や外国の お客様に多くの種類のカクテルを提供し ています。 ティスティングを魅力あるもの にするため、料理やシガー、 コーヒー、音 楽などもお伴にしています。私は、私のふ るさとであり、愛する国であるマルティニ ークとラムの大使であると言わせて下さ い。 RVAM: 日本へ来た理由をお聞かせ願 いますか？ Louis-Solo Martinel: 職業上の理由と 学術的な理由があります。私はFLE（外 国語としてのフランス語）の教師でもあ ります。私はフランス語を教え、 フランス 語圏文化を外国の方に伝えます。職業 としては、 日本は私の国の養子とも言え ます。私はとても有名なギリシャ系アイル ランド人作家のラフカディオ・ハーン （日 本では小泉八雲という名前で知られて います） を研究しています。彼が日本に来 る前に、ハーンは２年間をマルティニー クで過ごしています。 ハーンはいくつかの 小説や物語集を書き、 レシピも書いてい ます。 ここ日本では、私は彼のオリジナル の原稿や、私の研究を完成させるために いくつかの書類を探しています。私は彼 の作品について記事や著作のいくつか を書いています。

Louis-Solo Martinel: Professional reasons and academic reasons. I am a teacher of FLE (French as a Foreign Language). So, I teach French language and francophone cultures to foreigners. As a professional, Japan is my country of adoption. I am also researching on the works of the famous Greek-Irish author, Lafcadio Hearn, who became naturalized Japanese under the assumed name Koizumi Yakumo. Before coming to Japan, he spent two years in Martinique. He wrote essays, novels, collections of tales, recipes, songs, proverbs.

Here in Japan, I am looking for original manuscripts or unpublished documents to complete my research. I write a lot about his work (articles, books).

RVAM:You are a university professor, a lecturer. You are also active in the theater scene, as a director, an actor...

Louis-Solo Martinel: I am a university professor in Japan, teaching French language and also francophone literatures. This is my official profession which comes with a lot of extracurricular activities that takes most of my free time day and night. Like any good teacher, I am also a researcher. Consequently, this has turned me into a translator and broadcaster of cultures both in Japan and globally. I go to conferences, symposiums, and seminars. I publish articles or reviews in papers or magazines. I also write books. On the cultural side, the artistic side, theater is my passion, my second nature. That’s why I am equally involved in theater activities. I run the Fuji Scene Francophone theater company that I founded more than ten years ago. And every year, we stage one or two plays from the French moderns or classics, or from the international repertoire (text, author, world), often with an international cast. A play can be staged according to its universe, its author, in French, English, Japanese, Spanish, Creole, Brazilian, Arab or one of the African languages. You can add African songs, Creole tales or Japanese elements.

I also challenge myself into adapting texts that were not originally written for theater such as novels, movies, stories, poems or songs. My shows combine theater, poetry, film, dance and music. We have achieved quite a lot over the past ten years.

RVAM: Fuji Scène Francophone hasn’t staged anything since 2013. We miss you! When is the comeback?

Louis-Solo Martinel: How nice of you to say this! I see that you are a real fan. Thanks to you and the Rendez-vous En Asie magazine for its support. Our audience is French native language, Japanese and very international. Our shows are always subtitled, creating a heavy load on our budget.

It is quite difficult to produce francophone performances in Japan. A lack of financial resources slows down most of our projects. We are now reorganizing in order to find new partners. Allow me to make an appeal here. We are in need of funds but never short of projects or ideas. Let me tell you a secret. When I started Fuji Scène Francophone, I had a list of all the plays I wanted to stage. It was a kind of contract I drew with myself. So far, I have honored 80% of this contract. So I still have many texts in stock and even added newer ones to the list. 2016 is Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary. I am planning something based on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth by the end of the year so I hope I will be able to gather the necessary resources.

RVAM: Do you get any support from the French authorities or Embassies? Do you get lots of French people or Francophiles in the audience?

Louis-Solo Martinel: Not enough, and not regularly, hence this appeal. For God’s sake, Fuji Scène Francophone promotes Francophone countries, authors, cultures, language! As for the support from the French authorities, it is not easy to get.

RVAM: You can count on the support from our magazine Rendez-vous en Asie. But can you tell us more about this intriguing play title “Macbeth and Lady Macbeth” that you mentioned earlier?

Louis-Solo Martinel: Thank you in advance for your support and promotion. I prophesy (Macbeth is a prophecy) and this play will be beautiful, very beautiful. Let me tell you another secret. I intend to make both sexes guilty and responsible for their violent hunger-thirst for power, ambition and betrayal, madness, rage and tyranny. Macbeth wants to tempt fate and prophecy of the witches by his murderous impulses. Lady Macbeth invokes spirits to assist in her murderous thoughts with a “Unsex me!” She asks them to thicken her blood, to change the milk from her breasts into gall. And from Macbeth, General Thane, a prophesied King who was weak in will, she required that he pegged his male courage. “Unsex me!” sets the play off balance with the relationship between sexual differences and power. A disoriented intriguing outcry that stirs up opposite concepts and ideologies surrounding the female / male, nature / culture, good / evil, maternity / virility and their relationships.

RVAM: Now, tell us more about your business activities and Madkaud Héritiers Rum. Louis-Solo Martinel: Promoting Madkaud Héritiers Rum also means promoting Martinique and the Caribbean. And as I said, I enjoy it. This brings a change from just teaching or lecturing. Our Japanese distributor (Three Rivers) is quite dynamic. My mission is mainly to guide him and boost the sales.

Madkaud Héritiers is also present in other countries in Asia, Europe, America, and one day we will be in Africa.

RVAM:フランスの有力者やフランス大使館からサポートはあり ますか？ 観客のフランス人やフランス語圏の人たちからサポー トを得ていますか？ Louis-Solo Martinel: 十分ではありません。 また定期的でもあり ません。 それだからこのアピールなのです。Fuji Scène Francophone はフランス語圏の国々や著者、文化、言語をプロモートし ています。 フランスの有力者からのサポートがどうかいえば、 それ を手にするのは簡単ではありません。

Our goal is to be present in several countries in Asia. I am just back from China, which is a huge market but quite difficult. We will soon sign an agreement with a major distributor in China (Shanghai, Beijing, HK, Chengdu ...); we also have projects for Singapore, Russia, and India. We progress slowly but surely.

We are present in Europe (France, Germany). Soon, we will be in America (USA, Canada ...). Africa is tomorrow’s market, maybe. Why not?

RVAM: You will sponsor Rendez-Vous En Asie for rum tasting evenings in Tokyo. Tell us more about that.

Louis-Solo Martinel: Beautiful evenings in perspective. The public can discover and enjoy our rum, free of charge, in an Afro-Caribbean atmosphere (music, artist, fashion show ...).

In that way, rum can be appreciated together with its history, its land, its territory. March 26 (19h-24h) at the Paris-Bali Lounge-Bar, Minami Aoyama, June 4 (15h-22h) at Shidax Hall, Shibuya and to complete that special evening at the afterparty (~ 22h), still in Paris-Bali Lounge-Bar. RVAM:Do you also participate in major rum events around the world?

Louis-Solo Martinel: In March, we participate in the Japan Rum Connection in Osaka (this year, the organizers have focused on the Kansai region). In April, we will be at Jaoan Rum connection in Tokyo. Rum Fiesta, Spring Rum, Parc Floral de Vincennes, Rum Rallye in Parisian restaurant-bars, and Big Rum Festival in Berlin, Haiti, and Rum Expo...

Professionals, rumeliers, amateurs, connoisseurs and the general public don’t miss any of these events and such curiosity has seen a constant growth in enthusiasm for rum.

RVAM: You used the word “rumelier”. How beautiful and creative!

Louis-Solo Martinel: In the field of rum, there are still lots of room for creativity in word play. More vocabulary can be invented regarding tools, devices, structures, organizations… Around the world, professionals are working on it. The Japanese follow or sometimes move ahead.

There are now certified rumeliers, trained by a specialized organization. We have Rum Concierges who do a formidable job under the guidance of professional bartenders or bar managers such as our friend, Mrs. Tato Chie, manager of the Tafia, a rum-bar in the heart of Nishi-Azabu in Tokyo.

RVAM: Are there many rum bars in Japan?

Louis-Solo Martinel: There are about ten in Tokyo (Shibuya, Ginza, Shinjuku, Setagaya and Nishi Azabu), ten in Yokohama (Noge, Sakuraguicho, Kannai) and some in the Kansai area (Osaka, Kobe). But rum is also served in the best bars, clubs, night clubs, French restaurant-bars, Latin American bars, Afro-Caribbean bars (where white rum is a favorite) and also in the bars of the big hotels, (where the Old rum or VSOP are luxury products).

RVAM: What about the Japanese people? Are they enthusiastic about rum? Can Japanese people travel easily to Martinique?

Louis-Solo Martinel: Unfortunately, Airfares are quite expensive from Japan to Martinique but things are improving, prices will keep falling, and more tours operators will offer Martinique as a destination for Japanese people to spend a vacation.

RVAM:What are the major cultural or sporting events in Martinique that would appeal most to the Japanese people?

Louis-Solo Martinel: There are major international cultural festivals in the capital of Fort-de-France and neighboring seaside resorts like Le Marin. Some of them are thematic like dance festivals, theater, storytelling, music (jazz, Latin jazz, beguine jazz, Afro Caribbean, and traditional fests). We also have sport competitions (football, handball, tennis). Martinique is the host country for the 31th CARIFTA Games. The Davis Cup takes place in Guadeloupe, our neighboring island. There are nautical events (surf, wing surfing, sailing, rowing, Route du Rhum, Transquadra, transatlantic races). Some events are at the major international level such as semi-marathon, cycling tour of Martinique (the 2010 winner was a Japanese national, Shimizu Miyakata). There are events one shouldn’t miss such as Martinique Caribbean Carnival, rum festival, traditional Christmas carols, Tour des Yoles (traditional boat).

The Martinique Creole cuisine can be addictive too. It includes mixed flavors of African, Asian, European and Caribbean tastes.

Talking about gastronomy, I will tell you about my favorite dishes, desserts and restaurants in Martinique.

Check out my favorite dishes: the popular Ti-nain (green bananas) and dried cod, the fierce avocado revisited as a lollipop, sheep colombo with Indian spices, the ancestral matoutou crab on a Creole bed of rice, a spicy Caribbean lobster, all very mouth watering . Let us not forget the court- bouillon Creole (bouillabaisse) or blaff bokay (local acqua pazza). And now, my favorite desserts: the typical blanc manger with a few drops of coconut-rum (Madkaud) on a mango coulis with a mini tropical fruit salad and an iced chadec stick (big local grapefruit) or orangette. I can’t name them all.

There are too many. I would recommend Le Bredas at Saint-Joseph city and his chef Mr.Bredas or chef Ravin from the Blue Bay Restaurant who recently won a star in Guide Michelin. But there are hundreds of places where you can eat delicious food in Martinique.

And try Bambou or Coconut Pousse (young leaves hearts) at Tafia my favourite Rum bar in Tokyo.

RVAM:And all these delicious dishes should be accompanied by good rum, I suppose?

Louis-Solo Martinel: Top choices are Salines Beach, Diamond Beach with its beautiful diamond rock. Visit the capital, Fort-de-France, by night or by day. It is a city of art and history, the Pompeii of the Caribbean that was destroyed in 1902 by a volcanic eruption. Stroll along the Malecom, the bay, see the Cruise Terminal with its cruise ships and business hotels. Many boutiques are available to shop for souvenirs, and the big market allow you to enjoy a profusion of colors and flavors. You can tour the rum homes or visit the Clement Museum and the Pagerie, the birthplace of Empress Josephine, Napoleon’s wife. Go to the Slavery Museum or Aimé Cesaire’s Museum in the former town hall. If you are a night person, you will find trendy music bars or the casino to enjoy a nice evening. If you are more into marine kind of sports, a variety of activities are available (diving, surfing, water skiing). If you prefer mountain hiking, forest walks, a green Martinique from North to the South remains open for adventure.

he 20th biennial FESTIMA, the largest International Art and Mask Festival in West Africa took place in the town of Dedougou, 250km west of the capital Ouagadougou. Hundreds of traditional masks from six countries - Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Togo, Senegal and 50 villages of Burkina Faso, came to life during the festival.

Masks have been an important part of traditional animist beliefs in many African cultures for thousands of years. Made of leaves, straw, wood and textile, the masks symbolize the worship of ancestors and spirits.

They play an important role during commemorations of rites and the cycle of life.

高潔な人たち国 で第２０回FESTIMAが開催 According to traditional beliefs, during the ceremony, the frantic music and dancing transforms the entranced mask wearer into a spirit which communicates its with ancestors. A wise man or translator sometimes accompanies the wearer of the mask during the ritual, helping to interpret the ancestors’ message.

“Of course, these masks are not given full power during the festival,” one musician explained during a break.

“Otherwise, you would not even be able to photograph them; nothing would show up in the picture.”

A month earlier, the capital of Burkina Faso was devastated by terrorist attacks claimed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Al-Mourabitoun, which left 30 dead and 56 wounded from 18 different nationalities.

Ki Leonce, executive director of ASAMA, the Association for the Protection of Masks, said the attack left the country shocked because Burkina Faso, which literally means “the land of honest people”, is known for its religious tolerance and peaceful attitudes.

“There are two aspects about masks,” he continued: “One is cult and the other is culture; there might be a religious conflict for people who venerate masks, but there is no conflict from the cultural point. It is our cultural patrimony, every African, every Burkinabe shares it and we should not allow other people to dictate our way of thinking, but preserve our cultural heritage.”

During the festival, masks were incredibly alive and some tourists attended despite the attacks. ASAMA is hoping to obtain funds to invite even more nations and masks to participate in the festival in 2018.

Un soir aux environs de 23h il pleuvait fort, je suis très saoulé et je décide de rentrer à la maison en taxi.

Je sors donc du bar et j’attend un taxi pendant 30 minutes... fatigué d’attendre le taxi, je décide de faire un auto- stop et subitement une Range Rover s’arrête à mon niveau.

Je saute côté passager et je referme la porte. La voiture commence à bouger, et juste au moment où je suis sur le point de dire merci au chauffeur, je découvre qu’il n’y a personne dans la voiture.

Je commence à paniquer mais j’ai trop peur de sauter du véhicule en mouvement. A un moment, la voiture arrive à un virage, une main passe à travers la fenêtre du conducteur et tourne le volant.

Je pense à un fantôme, je panique totalement et je saute de la voiture en hurlant. j’atterris dans un fossé plein d’eau de pluie. Je me lève et je cours très vite en hurlant de toutes mes forces.

J’entre dans le bar le plus proche. Je commande 4 bouteilles de Guinness et après avoir bu ma dernière bouteille, je raconte mon histoire de fantôme à tout le monde. A ce moment là, trois gars trempés par l’eau de pluie entrent dans le même bar. L’un d’eux me pointe du doigt et dit: «Moussa, ce n’est pas le fou qui est entré dans la voiture pendant qu’on la poussait ?”

Le chinois et le sport Un chinois commence un cours de sport. Le prof l’interpelle.

Héritiers Madkaud Since 1895, Madkaud had been in production for generations in north-eastern part of Martinique Island in the Caribbean, and in the first half of 1960’s their business expanded to the extent that at one time they possessed several distilleries on the island.

But economic situations in 1960’s obliged them to close down those distilleries. Later on, when Srephan Madkaud, present managing director wanted to re-open the business, he brought in a family recipe to a distillery that he had known for a long time. Finally after long period of interruption, he successfully resurrected his family business.

The rum that his passion had brought back to life already won prizes in competitions around the world, gathering people’s attention. In the category of agricole rum, Madkaud has a very rich but soft flavor.

White Madkaud is perfect for people who want to learn about agricole rem and it also makes very suitable material to make cocktails. Dark Madkaud is especially noted for its smooth and soft taste.

Theseason festival knocks...

t is that special time of the year again when faces light up and flowers bloom. A great time when people rock to the beat of the same drums, creating an excitement essential for offsetting the everyday hustle and bustle of the Japan hard-working environment.

Spring is a time for a joyful noise with new beginnings as we all reflect on the cold winter we had to endure. People of all walks of life visit Japan to witness some of the most colorful and amazing events throughout the entire region.

The festival season will open in Tokyo, coinciding with the “One Love Festival” at Yoyogi Park, and the African Festival in Yokohama Akarenga Red Brick in early April. Though there are many amazing festivals such as the Thai and Brazilian festivals among them, there is no doubt that over the years the African Festival and the One Love festival has created a brand that has transcended globally. In talking to many foreigners from around the world, there is definitely a feeling that Japan as a whole has become more culturally diverse and accepting.

We hope that this will continue within the years to come regardless of political agendas, as we are one people of the human race.

With excitement in our veins and songs we love on the tip of our tongues, it is a time when we require the community to show their full support for our magazine. This is a time when our team gears up for the “PREMIERE” Rendez-vous en Asie 2016. This year our event will be held on Saturday June 4th at Shibuya Shidax Culture Hall. As usual we have worked very hard over the years to create dynamic and memorable events where people can bring their entire families to enjoy.

For this year’s event we will have an amazing line up of artists from different parts of the world. Our guest artists include: Jamaican Reggae musician Mackaruffin & MackaRoots Band, Ivorian Ibrahime Konate and his group, and the Japanese urban choreographer Mana Fatimata alongside Lucky Mugis from Ghana. There will also be other surprise guest artists attending so perhaps we will also see some surprise performances as well.

We will continue to thank the Japanese and foreign community for the continued support this season. Now, let us remember the heart and soul of spring in Japan, the one that has been happening for generations. There can be no spring festivals without the very special cherry blossoms (Sakura), to kick things off. If you happen to be in the archipelago around the end of March or early April, don’t miss it. Cherry Blossoms in Japan is something one must see at least once in their life. Consider this an opportunity to explore places such as Kichijoji’s Inokashira koen where people meet and fall in love.

Here is a list of the best spots where you will be able to enjoy the cherry blossoms in Tokyo and its suburbs:

Tokyo Shinjuku Park, Asukayama Park and Ueno Park, are favorite spots, but also consider Botukei with its cherry trees all along the banks of the Sumida River near Asakusa. The banks of the Meguro River or Yoyogi Park are rated locations for people in the central areas. The Koishikawa botanical garden will give you an opportunity to admire many varieties of cherry trees.

In the capital, the most romantic tour is undoubtedly Chidorigafuchi, located near the Imperial Palace; you can rent boats to sail on the moat while admiring the beautiful landscape.

- In Yokohama, go to the Kaminoyama Park near Minato Mirai, or Sankeien, a garden in the middle of ancient buildings.

- In Kamakura, we recommend the Dankazura where the cherry trees form an ark in the driveway that leads to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine.

TICAD第６回の運営をケニア・ナイロビにて。 Japan honors the African continent this year by organizing the first TICAD VI Summit (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) in Nairobi, Kenya.

frican Union Chairperson, Dr Nkosazana DlaminiZuma, stressed the importance of this event for Africa and expressed her gratitude to the Government of Kenya for accepting to host the Summit. For the Japanese counterparts, Mr. Kawai has that noted this event is very important asset forth by the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Shinzo Abe. In endorsing the TICAD VI Summit to be held on African soil, shows that Japan is ready to work hand in hand with Africa. This something has been in the making for many years now. Mr Kenyatta Ouhuru, the President of Kenya, said that TICAD will promote the principles of African ownership for the process included in the 2063 Agenda of the African Union, which is “a prosperous Africa, based on inclusive growth and sustainable development with a clear focus on providing decent and productive work for the African people, especially young Africans who carry with them the future of the continent”.

President Kenyatta expressed his gratitude to the Japanese Government for the cooperation they have extended to Kenya regarding the organization of this important summit.

TICAD VI is expected to attract more than 6,000 participants from Africa and Japan, as well as various international organizations.

The Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) was launched by the Government of Japan to promote African development, peace and security, through strengthening relations in multilateral cooperation and partnership, particularly between States.
