“Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE” Africa is constantly changing,

Some afro-pessimists have considered her staying on the edges of History, no joy!

She stands at the center of historical issues!

Her name has been associated against her will with the business of misery, civil wars, diseases for ages!

She is now getting rid of it!

They predicted anarchy for her first world cup in 2010 in South Africa, but nothing happened!

These afro-pessimists were surprised by African people hospitality “In Africa, the guest is King”.

Yes, we are talking about Africa.

Africa is today at the center of worldwide political, economical and cultural issues. One must admit, Africa is about to be upon us(metamorphose),. and this is a reality.

Nowadays the demography is booming, one human being out of seven is African, we will be one out of five in 2050. 43% of sub-Saharans are less than 15 year-old, 62% less than 25 year-old! With 1,8 billion people in 2050, Africa’s population will exceed 25% that of China, according to Jean-Michel Severino in “le Temps de l’Afrique” (Time of Africa)…

Regarding cultural aspects, particularly music, in spite of the ghettoization of African artists until the late 90’s, they managed to slacken the vice with the support of African and Caribbean diasporas (farafina).

Nowadays, African musicians are marking their names everywhere in the world and it’s just the beginning.

We all know about Akon, Rihana, Mohombi, Richard Bona, Angélique Kidjo, Kanda Mbongo Man, Youssou N`Dour, Koffi Olomide, Alpha Blondy, Kassav, Papa Wemba, or Awilo Longomba who attended the RendezVous en Asie premiere in Yokohama last may, to name a few … It has to be said that most of those musicians are coming from the African and Caribbean diaspora (Farafina) of Europe and USA...

What about Farafina Asia ?

The African and Caribbean diaspora (farafina) in Asia, and particularly the one in Japan, shall double its efforts to restore the image of African people and artists in particular, who are is still associated with poverty and misery.

The Farafina Japan shall build partnership ties in their domains of activities in order to encourage serious economical and cultural exchanges between Japan and African and Caribbean countries. This should be a duty of each and everyone of us.

A gift of joy

by Sakura Sato This month Albert Martin has two reasons to celebrate.

First, this well-rounded musician,with a kind smile, and who describes himself as a “musical writer of all phases”, is releasing a DVD, another of the many goals he has accomplished in Japan. Second. His birthday is in October.

This month, if you meet Albert, you could have two lessons to learn. And they are not necessarily music ones, but lessons for life.

Although he has been on the same stage as part of the tours of artists such as Madonna and Mariah Carey, has participated in the successful Michael Mattews’ broadway musical “Momma Don’t”, has sung with Rudolph V. Hawkins and the Duke Ellington Choir, composed and performed for a UCC Coffee TV commercial in Japan, and was also part of a special event when Michael Jackson visited Tokyo in 2007, when you meet Albert, you meet a very down-to-earth man, someone who confesses not to have “any evil intentions”. “All of my intentions are good”, he says, to what he adds, after asking him how a writer could best describe him, “ I am a good-hearted person”.

One of the main lessons I learned from him relates, precisely, to the intentions.

Why do you play music? Even though it is clear that his career has been characterized by professionalism and collaborations with mainstream artists, or teaching, touring and recording, it was pleasant to listen to his answer. “I spread music as a gift of joy”. Yes, that is lesson number one. Even when having concrete goals and expected results, he aims to give, more than anything, and to contribute to “unity through music”. “I don’t throw away, I give away”, he concludes. A clear way to give could actually take form as the workshops he leads for non-musicians to learn how to connect with and enjoy music, and to dare to sing, to express themselves, to feel the joy.

That profound approach to what he does is based on an art that “comes from a spiritual background”, Albert says. His family was indeed very much connected to music, with grandparents who played a variety of instruments such as violin, a mother and a father who were dancers and siblings who, like him, sing and compose, and who he has actually worked together with. # 2 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 8

It is at this point where lesson number two comes along: family, and the position it should have in people’s lives.

When being asked about his success and the accomplishments he has had, he cannot omit the relevance of family support. His experience, part of it based on the soul of gospel and his expectations, rooted on the noble fact of wanting to give, make him a musician people want to connect with and learn from. Even when October passes by, Albert will keep having reasons to celebrate.

His goals still have many more calendars to fill and much more joy to give.

Springtime and its blossoming cherry trees know how to pull at our heartstrings each year. As their ephemeral beauty fades, they offer us the promise of another equinox’s color palette ranging from the Japanese maple’s flamboyant red to the ginkgo’s lively yellow, all set against the mountainsides’ ever-changing foliage.

The proper way to enjoy this spectacle is not from one’s living room window. Rather one should follow the knowing Japanese who are sure not to miss the autumnal spectacles as they travel to meet them. A little too early or late, no calendar can predict the height of the season’s fall colors.

Takayama’s Autumn Festival is already being widely advertised for October 9-10. By bullet train, it is about four-hour journey from Tokyo with one transfer in Nagoya. www.prsen.com

The temple’s ritual ceremony is reflected in the long parade of traditional costumes and Shinto music.

The festival continues well into Sunday night when magnificently decorated floats delight spectators.

With its well-preserved roads and houses, the city of Takayama invites us to become immersed in the Edo Period (1600-1868) and its charms.

And then there is Kyoto; this unbeatable city will always hold first place in any seasonal beauty contest.

In our last edition, we had a malian proverb that says : “The feet do not go where the heart is not’’ meaning : No ambition can be fulfilled without really putting your heart in it.

. 読者の皆さん、 私は個人的に、私たちの「ランデヴオンア ジ」雑誌の創刊号と諺部門に来て下さっ たことに感謝する。 最後の号で、私たちはマリの諺をもった： 「足は心がない所に行かない。 」 意味： 本当の心が入ることなしに野心が果たさ れることはない」 この号では、南アフリカ の諺を取り上げる： 「木が落ちる音は聞くことができるが、森 が成長する時は何も聞こえない。 」

. Born in 1974 in Guinea , Nyama Kante is the niece of the internationally known Guinean artist Mori Kante, the “Yeke Yeke “hit song writer.

She comes from a big family of musicians. She showed a great interest in dance in her early childhood.

After moving in Abidjan ( Cote d’ Ivoire ), where she became a very famous traditional dancer. In 1990, she starterd her career as a comedian, dancer and a singer with a group called “ Koteba “.

Her international career as a singer started in 1992 with a pop music trio called the “les gos de Koteba”that toured all of Africa, Europe and the U.S.A

Married to a japanese man in 1996, she moved to Japan in 1998. Now living in Japan, where she performs as a dancer - singer . On many occassion she performed in “african fiesta” and in “Festival Africa no natsu” she appeared in many japanese TV programs as the “Hanamaru Market” (TBS) , “waratte Iitomo “ (Fuji t.v ) etc...

In !998 , she released her first CD in Japan called “Yarabi “ ( Sumaora Production , SK 0001). Now she have her own full band called “Jelidon “ composed of Japanese members.

1974年ギニア生まれ、ニャマ・カントは国際的に知 られたギニア人アーティスト、 モリ・カントの姪であ り、 「イェケ イェケ」 ヒットソングライター。彼女は、 音楽家と演奏家のビッグファミリー出身。彼女は偉 大な幼少期にダンスに大きな興味をみせた。 アビジ ャン （コートジヴォワール） に移った後、彼女は大変 有名な伝統的なダンサーになった。 1990年、彼女は 「コテバ」 と呼ばれるグループと共に、 コメディアン、 ダンサーそしてシンガーとしてのキャリアを始めた。 シンガーとしての彼女のキャリアは、 「コテバのレ ゴ」 と呼ばれる全アフリカ、 ヨーロッパとアメリカを 廻ったポップミュージックトリオと1992年に始まっ た。1996年に日本人と結婚し、1998年に日本へ移 動した。現在も彼女がダンサー、 シンガーとして活 動する日本に住んでいる。多くの場で、彼女は「アフ リカの祝祭」 と 「夏のアフリカ祭り」 を演じ踊り、 「花 まるマーケット」 （TBS） 、 「笑っていいとも」 （フジテレ ビ）など日本の多くの番組に登場した。1998年、彼 女は、 「ヤラビ」 （スマオラプロダクションSK 0001) 、 と呼ばれる日本で最初のCDを発売した。今、彼女 は元々ディジャムブと共に始めた 「ジェリドン」 と呼 ばれる彼女自身のバンドを持っており、今は日本人 メンバーで構成されたフルバンドを持っている。

Iinglove tasting food from other countries . Discovernew dishes. In Africa, there are so many dishes,

for example in Morocco, they have couscous, in Kenya they have sukuma wiki and the ugali, in Ethiopia, they have injera and doro hot....

Talking about Japan, they are various dishes too, like natto for example. Ater a few days in Japan, some friends of mine tooked me to dinner.They wanted me to taste some Japanese food as I was the new gaikokujin in town!!!!

The restaurant was nicely decorated and staff was so polite, they had a lot of different dishes, so they ordered natto first for me. After eating it, then came the question ‘’how was it?” honestly, it wasn’t my type of food, but to be polite to my friends, I said “it was delicious but I don’t think I will eat it again”.

That was the first challenge.The second one was Sushi, where I m from, we don’t eat raw food. Now I had to taste some raw fish!!!!They ordered some maguro, anago and others all at the same time, after eating each one of them, I realized it was damn good!!!. I never ate raw fish in my life before and now I can say I ‘m a big sushi fan. I love it.

Once landed in DR Congo, I could see how curious and scared he was from the airport to the hotel , he didn’t say a word. I was amused!! knowing he is a Japanese, never been abroad before and in Africa.

What will he eat?

The first day he had a cup noodle, l was surprised, and I asked him, where did you get those cup of noodles ? He said, I brought in my suitcase …I didn`t replay to that one, just say ah ?! OK!

日本について話すと、 彼らも、例えば納豆のよう . な様々な料理を持っている。 日本での数日後、 何人かの友達が私に夕食をご馳走してくれた。 私はその町 で新しいガイコクジンだったので、 彼らは私にいくつかの日本食を味あわせたかっ たのだ!!!! レストランは素晴らしく良い装飾で、 お店の人は丁寧、 たくさんの違った料理があり、 そして彼らは最初に私の為に納豆を頼んだ。 そ れを食べた後、それから「どうだった？」 という 質問がきた。正直に言って、私の好みの食べ物 ではなかったが、友人への礼儀のために私は「 美味しかったけどもう一度食べようとは思 わな い。 」 と言った。 これは最初の挑戦だった。二つ 目の料理は寿司、私の出身地では、我々は生も のは食べない。今私はいくつかの生魚を食べな ければならな い!!!!彼らはいくつかのマグロ、 ア ナゴそして他のものを全て同時に頼み、それら の一つを食べた後で、私は、 しまった、美味い、 こ とに気がつい た!!!. 私は前に生魚を食べたこと がなかったが、今 私は大きな寿司ファンだと言うことができる。私 はそれが好きである。何年か後、 コンゴ民主共 和国へ同僚の一人と 出張へ行った。 それは彼 の最初の海外そしてアフリカへの旅だった。私 は彼を心配した。彼はおにぎりやラーメンのな い所へ行く、おそらく彼がアフリカについて一 度考えるとき、 ライオンやクロコダイルに食べら れると思うだろう!!!!

The following day when we were out. I didn’t want to bother him.Then one day he asked to try Congolese food. I was surprised and glad!! So I ordered some peanut butter sause fish and plantain banana for him. Just after tasting it ...the guy said, OISHII KORE!!!! since then he was eating whatever I ordered and that was good and fun!!!!

So, he discovered a new thing in his life just the way I did. That was a great experience.

Few years later, we went on a business trip with one of my coworkers in the DR Congo. It was his first to Africa and had never been abroad. I was worries about him.He was going where there is no onigiri and ramen, may be he was thinking once in Africa, he will be eaten by lions and crocodiles!!!!

Koffi Gerard Cote d’Ivoire Youngest child of an Ivorian family of twelve children, Gerard

Koffi showed a precocious gift for cooking. Though opposed to his ambition of becoming a chef, his patriarch wanted him to become a doctor. After high-school he indeed settled for a blouse, not one that is worn in hospitals but one he has donned in kitchens all the world over the past few decades. Back in the Abidjan, Koffi studied French cuisine for three years in a hotel school, after which he was recruited by the famous Continental hotel chain. Later a three month internship in Lausanne, Switzerland, proved he had a solid potential and that the world was not too big for this ambitious young man. In fact back in the Cote d’Ivoire “Chef Koffi” soon became a local celebrity while appearing on cooking shows. Much later he showcased his unique gastronomic creations on Japanese television too. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Cuisine

2002年、彼はコートジヴォワールの首都に戻り、 自身の弁当ビジネスを 始め、 さらに彼の重要なコンセプトである伝統とフレンチ風味のマリア ージュ （結婚） を発展させた。彼は常に料理への情熱の中で彼を信じ助 けた最愛の後の母の方法を取り入れた。 コートジヴォワールには60以 上の民族が存在し、全てが特異性を持つ。 コフィーの個人的な好みは、 アティエクで、キャッサバを基礎とした、国の南からきた特別なもので、 クスクスに似ており、肉か魚のソースを添えて手で食べる。彼は多くの 色とりどりな材料と共に、盛り付け、付け合せ、栄養学に多大な注意を払 い、有益なオリーブオイルを重視している。 しかしコートジヴォワールの日本大使は、彼の美食創作品と恋に落 ち、2004年に彼を東京に連れて行った。 コフィーシェフは、 まもなく彼が 西アフリカで日常的に使っていた、 ソースに良く使うグンボ（オクラ） と燻 製の魚といった製品は日本で新鮮な状態で手に入ることに気づいた。 「 私は日本人に典型的な日本の食材を使う他の方法をみせたい。 」

In order to expand his knowledge and specialize in dietetics, he moved to Avignon, in the South of France, where a rich business man discovered and hired him as his private chef in the Chateau de Lavaure, a stunning castle build in Auvergne in the early 1800’s. Besides having its own wine appellation, the castle offered organic vegetables grown on the premises, as well as chickens, sheep and even horses. Truffles too were found on the domain. This setting was clearly a paradise for his employer’s high profile guests and also for a committed chef, smoking salmon and ham himself. On top of that the job gave him the opportunity to travel all over the world and cook in prestigious kitchens.

In 2002 he returned to the Ivorian capital to start his own bento business and further develops his key concept of marrying traditional and French flavors. He embraced methods from his beloved late mother who always believed and supported him in his passion for cooking. In Cote d’Ivoire there are more than 60 ethnic groups, all of which have their own speciality. Koffi’s personal favorite is Attieke, a cassava based specialty from the South of the country, similar to couscous and eaten with hands accompanied with meat or fish in sauce. He pays great attention to presentation, garnishing his dishes with many colorful ingredients and always paying attention to dietetics, heavily relying on beneficial olive oil.

But the ambassador of the Cote d’Ivoire in Japan fell in love with his gastronomic creations and brought him to Tokyo in 2004. Chef Koffi soon realized that all the products he used daily in West Africa were freshly available in Japan, namely gumbo (okra) and smoked fish he uses to flavor his sauces.

“I want to show the Japanese that there are other ways to utilize typical Japanese ingredients”.

When his contract with the embassy ended, Chef Koffi decided to start his own business in Japan, a country he has grown fond of. “The Japanese have a lot of respect for food and chefs. They are knowledgeable and have a very sharp palate, even more than the French.” But the qualities he admires the most are patience and discipline.

“Even if the restaurant is busy, Japanese customers will queue as long as necessary to get in”. Indeed they are always interested in novelty and Chef Koffi has plenty to offer. In fact there isn’t one single Ivorian restaurant in the whole of the archipelagos! Ivorians use the same ingredients commonly found in Japanese cuisine but the result is incredibly different and never ceases to amaze his clientele. Miso ramen and yakitori aficionado, Koffi also finds inspiration in ramen and nikomi, that he adapted with inspiring results. But he wants to provide true African food. In his own words: “I want the Japanese customers to adapt to Ivorian flavors and not the other way around!” These are not the words of a lazy man but a perfectionist and true lover of his home cuisine.

His fine work was presented by TBS during a program about the Ivorian embassy. Koffi even appeared in a pachinko commercial because of his resemblance with The Matrix character Morpheus.

Chef Koffi is currently looking for investors to help him create the first Ivorian restaurant in Japan. You can also contact him for weddings or receptions if you want to create an exceptional atmosphere and allow your guests to discover a new world of flavors.

In the coming months Chef Koffi has agreed to share some of his secrets by teaching us a new dish in every issue of Rendezvous en Asie. For him cooking is an art of generosity.

“When you feed someone and see a smile on his face I feel happy.”

The first dish he will cook will be his all time favorite: a pistachio sauce. He insists all the ingredients he will use are easily found in Japan: tomato, onion, eggplant and more.

“The last African Eden Garden”

In an age where mass tourism has trampled many of na-

ture’s greatest wonders, stands a country where the African Eden is still alive. Located on the Atlantic coast of central Africa, straddling the equator and covered by the second largest tropical rainforest in the world, and lungs of the Earth, Gabon offers a generous rich and breathtaking nature. In 2002, his Excellency Mr Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon, put the country firmly on the map as an important ecotourism destination by designating more than 11% of the nation’s territory to be part of its national park system (with 13 parks in total), one of the largest proportions of nature parkland in the world.

It is a paradise for botanists and zoologists and the perfect setting for the latest and most progressive form of traveling, ecotourism, which means responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. Statistics speak for themselves: 64000 elephants, 25000 gorillas, 35000 chimpanzees, 3000 humpbacked whales.

The primary touristic destination is Loango covering 1,500 km2 of rare and exceptional coastal park because of the diversity of its ecosystems: ocean, savannah, forests, lagoons and rivers. On the beaches, a unique and breathtaking sight: hippos, elephants and buffaloes bathing in the sea, coming together in a harmony worthy of an earthly paradise. In the recent years it has become possible to sleep on the site with the Operation Loango project.

Canoe safaris, hikes on the endless beaches, camping in the most dense areas, big game fishing with strict application of releasing contribute to the complete immersion in this incomparable wild site. June to September, humpbacked whales follow the coast sometimes accompanied with dolphins and orcas.

It is also an egg-laying region for turtles. One who has witnessed the tedious task of walking up beaches to lay their eggs can never forget such a fragile and eternal moment.

But Gabon is also a paradise for orchid lovers. Only a few hours away from Libreville, the Monts de Cristal mountains shelter more than 320 species of the mesmerizing flower, many of which are endemic like Calyptrochilum Emarginatum, which can produce stems that look like vines growing over 5 meters in length, or the Leopard orchid whose diameter can reach 25 centimeters. But generally speaking these orchids are smaller than their Asian counterparts and resemble jewels. The blossom takes place throughout the year, although from March to May, and especially from September to December, are the most interesting periods. In these mountains overseeing the jungle, one can also witness the great and magnificent isolated waterfalls usually seen only by the animals in the forest.

Birds watchers too can enjoy the unspoiled Gabonese nature. The country has recently become a major ornithological tourism for its 680 bird species.

Indeed with its well preserved eco-systems and diversity of cultures, Gabon has prospects to develop a world-class tourism and adventure traveling.

But the real treasure of Gabon lies in its people: spiritual and dynamic, they are proud of their country’s resources and prosperity. Pioneer in terms of eco-energy, 70% of its domestic production consists of hydroelectric energy. Many remote villages have even been equipped with solar panels.

Music too has a particularly distinctive flavor. The doyen(god father) of Gabonese musicians is Pierre Akendengue, recipient of many prizes, who toured Asia in 2007 and blew away the unsuspecting Japanese audience during a show at the Tokyu World Music Special in Tokyo, with his highly rhythmical and unique musical style. Other notable figures are Patience Dabany (the first wife of the late El Adj Oumar Bongo Ondimba former President and mother of the current president), the late Oliver Ngoma godfather of Afro-Zook and Nicole Amogho, who jealously guards the secrets of Central African traditional music.

Attending the biodiversity conference in Nagoya during his most recent official visit in Japan, President Bongo stood up for the great business potentials and opportunities the country has to offer. In fact in the last 30 years Japan and Gabon have managed to forge a successful friendship and partnership. 80% of imported cars are Japanese.

And the Japanese have been eating fish from the Gabonese coast!

Indeed a politically stable country with natural resources including petroleum, magnesium, iron, gold, uranium, and forests can also be another type of paradise… one for investors!
