バラク・オバマ（アメリカ大統領）、 ジャン・ピン（現アフリカ連合委員会委員長）、ボブ・マーリー（ジャマイカ人のミュージシャン） そし てヤニック・ノア （フランス・カメルーン人の歌手）の共通点は何でしょう？ Rendez-vous in Asia第3号では”混血”について扱います。 まず最初に”混血”の定義をご説明しなくてはなりません。 “混血児/ 混血の人は人種の異なる両親を持っている。” こ の定義は、例えばアパルトヘイト時代の南アフリカ、 アメリカ、 ヨーロッパなど国民を公式に分類したいくつかの国々で使われて いました。 それはどの様な種類 の混血を指しているかによって異なります。 アジア人とヨーロッパの白人の混血であるユーラシア人 は一部アジア人で一部ヨーロッパ人として認識されていま す。 一方、白人と黒人の混血の人は西洋の社会では単に黒人とみなされます。例えば、バラク・オバマ、 ジャン・ピン、ヤニック・ノアまた はボブ・マーリーはいつも黒人とみなされています。思想的観点から、 この問題は人種差別を扱う討論の場で深く浸透しています。 20世紀の終わり、平和主義的な考えが増えたことにより、人種の混合の問題が落ち着き、結果、 とても人気が出た”ワールドミュージ ック”の普及、 そして”エスニック”ファッションの影響と共に、”人種の混合”は、 そのアイデンティティを確立しました。人々や環境によ り励まされたり傷つけられたりしたとしても、許すことそして愛することは天から授かった人間のコンセプトなのです。 ” 人種の混合”と文化間の共生は二つの異なる文化の間に自分を見出している人のアイデンティティを喪失させるかもしれません。 あ る文化からもう一つの文化へ の誤ったステレオタイプの伝達が指摘された時、 またそれらの文化のいずれかの良い価値観が取り 除かれてしまった時、”人種の混合”または異人種間の文化は 悪い影響を受けます。 一 方、人々が興味を持つ文化間の交流、交換についてテーマにされた時、自分たちに無いものを他の人がもたらしてくれた時に、 異人種間の文化の問題は良い影響 を受けます。私たちのエゴによって作られた排外主義の檻に閉じ込められるより、私たちは与え られた特別な機会を持って （文化的人種の混合）、上を向き、自 分たちを高めるべきです。 このRendez-Vous in Asia第3号では日本とアフリカの異人種間の文化を持つ”混血児”の人々に会うことに決めました。 そして彼ら にいくつか質問をしました。 子ども時代の一番の思い出は何ですか？ 日本の社会は彼らをどう考えているのでしょうか？ 彼らは自分を日本人らしいと考えているのでしょうか、 それともアフリカ人らしいと考えているのでしょうか？ 彼らは日本人とアフリカ人の混血として生まれたことが日本において有利だと思っているのでしょうか、 それとも不利だと思っている のでしょうか。 彼らは日本人とアフリカ人のミックスであることの利点に気付いているのでしょうか？ 彼らのもっとも強い願いは何でしょうか？ いずれにしても私たちRendez-Vous in Asiaは未来の日本のバラク・オバマ、ボブ・マーリー、 ジャン・ピンにインタビューしたのかも しれないということをとても幸せに思っています。

“Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE” Barack Obama, Jean Ping, Halle Berry, Lenny kravitz, Bob Marley, Yannick Noah (French-Cameroonian singer) ; what do those famous faces have in common? You already know ! «mixed-race of course» In this third issue, we will be exploring the mixed races issue.

First let’s define the meaning of “mixed -ace”: according to the dictionary: “A mixed race or metis“ is a person from parents of different races”(mixed blood).

This definition was referred to by several countries in their census, operating an official classification of their citizens, for exemple in «South Africa during Apartheid, in United-States, in Europe... etc... But it depends on which kind of mixed-race we are talking about.

For exemple: an eurasian, a person of asian and european parents is recognized as partly from Asia and partly from Europe. On the contrary, a white and black mixed-blooded person is only considered a black person in occidental societies. For exemple: Barack Obama, Jean Ping, Halle Berry, Yannick Noah, Lenny Kravitz, Bob Marley are constantly seen and considered as black people.

From an ideological point of view, the issues are deeply rooted in the debates dealing with racism.

The end of XXth century has developed a boom of mixed-race cultures and issues, thanks to increasing pacifist ideas. As a consequence, (mixed–race) has built up its own identity with the diffusion of “world music” that has became very popular and at the same time, with the influence of “ethnic” style in fashion.

Tolerance and love are two innate concepts for human beings, whether it is encouraged or damaged by siblings and surroundings.

The “mixed-race “ or the symbiosis of cultures causes the loss of one person’s identity who finds himself in between two different cultures that could be rejected or repressed. Thus, the “metissage” or mixed-race culture gets a negative effect when bringing up the transmission of false stereotypes of one culture to another or when removing the positive values of one of these cultures.

On the contrary, mixed-race cultures can have a positive effect when dealing with the interaction and exchange of cultures by bartering what the other race lacks resulting in a true symbiosis of cultures; simply put, cultural symbiosis.

Instead of being kept locked in a prison of xenophobia by our egos, we should look upwards and enrich ourselves with this extraordinary opportunity brought to us by cultural mixed-races.

In this third issue of the Rendez-Vous Magazine, we decided to meet those “Hafu” half Japanese and African people in Tokyo and ask them some questions.

What are their best childhood memories? How do the Japanese society consider them?

Do they feel more Japanese or African? Do they think that being born half Japanese and African is an advantage or a liability in Japan?

We also try to find out if they are aware of the advantages of being a mixed Japanese-African person.

In any case, we are glad to have maybe interviewed the future Japanese Barack Obama, Lenny Kravitz, Bob Marley, Yannick Noha or Jean Ping, Halle Berry.

That is what Takashi Harada says while listening to music, tempted to smoke another cigarette when the clock marked more than 10pm and while conversing in his very intimate music shop, El Sur. Takashi, silent and reserved, confesses that for him life has a special connotation. “I live just to listen to music”, he says. This particular purpose of living motivated him to start 14 years ago his own music shop in Shibuya, with no aspiration of becoming rich, hoping nothing, as he said, and aiming to fit in a small room the sounds and rhythms that make an echo in other corners of the world.

He has made his shop an exclusive oasis for those who are really into world music. The store is quite hard to find. It is located in the 10th floor of a rather old building, a simple door in a dark and dusty hall. “Only those who really know what they are looking for can find my shop”, he says. And when that happens, when there is somebody truly interested in music that finds the store without being taken by someone but just with the hope to listen to that unique CD they have been looking for awhile, Takashi confesses to feel truly glad. www.prsen.com

”私は何も望みません”。 それが音楽を聴きながらハラ ダ・タカシ氏が言った言葉です。彼のとてもくつろげる ミュージックショップ、El Surで会話をしながら夜の 10時が過ぎ、 もう1本タバコを吸いたくなりました。 寡 黙で控えめなタカシ氏は彼にとって人生は特別な 意味を含んでいると言います。”私はただ音楽を聴くた めに生きています。” この彼の独特な生きる意味が 14年前、彼を渋谷でミュージックショップを開こうとい う気にさせました。 お金持ちになりたいというわけでも 無く、彼が言う様に何も望んでいませんでし た。 ただ、 世界中にこだまする音とリズムを小さな空間に溶け込 ませることを目指していました。 彼 は彼の店をワールドミュージックに本当に夢中に なっている人々の唯一のオアシスにしました。 この店 は探すのが難しいです。暗くほこりっぽい廊下に質素 なド アがある、かなり古いビルの10階にあります。”自 分が探している物を本当に分かっている人だけが私 の店を見つけることが出来ます。”と彼は言います。 そ して、本当に音楽に興味のある誰かが他の誰かに連 れて来られたのではなく、 自分が探していたユニーク なCDを聞きたいという思いだけでこの店にたどり着 いた時、 タカシ氏は本当の意味で喜びを感じると言い ます。 # 3 Rendez-Vous en Asie The MAGAZINE 6

Once inside, the exotic sounds of music that comes from distant regions make the visitor forget of the outside scene. The collection he has includes music from Africa, Asia, Arab rythms, Latin America. Takashi is basically one of the few people, if not the only, that imports music from African artists. In fact, on his door he proudly has a poster of the famous Congolese artist, Franco Et le TPOK Jazz.

Takashi knows each section, each cabinet, each shelf of his shop, and considers as a jewel every CD and vinyl that make part of a vast collection of sounds from the globe. Indeed, he does not need to understand Swahili, or Spanish, or Arab. He says he picks the albums just by listening and feeling a connection with the music itself, with the true essence and nature of the rythms.

Although he does not hope for any recognition, Takashi is making a silent different in the music market in Japan.

El Sur is the place where the works of artists that are building the history of contemporary world music can be found. It’s a hidden corner that does not have the intention of growing any further, but does have the clear purpose of offering the best selection of a universe of sounds to those whose ears are ready to listen.

nitially, Kamakura was at the territory of a shogun called Yorimoto in 1192. At that time Kamakura became the capital of Japan. During the Kamakura and Ashigara periods, due to the influence of several Chinese monks who came to Kamakura, many buddhist temples were built at that time.

After this jump in the past and in search of a complete break with Japanese daily life, temples hidden in the mountain can offer a great relief. Most of the temples seem to be invisible since they were built in deep forests except the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Temple, built in 1063, which is easily accessible from Kamakura station.

Even if visitors usually ask for information at the Tourist Center, which is highly recommended, the staff there might not be able to reveal the other side of the city nor explain where the small path leading to a great number of small temples are.

You should stop first in Kita-Kamakura station, such a peaceful place where mountains seem to stand up in a marvellous nature sanctuary. Several benches covered with a red piece of tissue are aligned alongside the station, inviting travellers to get a rest and sip a bit of that famous macha tea (powder green tea). After entering the main street, a small path on the right can be seen. Even if there is no indication, a small slope is easily noticeable by pedestrians who can after a short climb on the mountain and discover one after another the temples punctuating the route. One of the oldest Zen Temples in Japan houses artworks of the Kamakura era (1185 - 1333): this is the Kencho-ji. From November 3rd and during 3 days, Kamakura city usually organises a cultural day. Both Temples of Kencho-ji and Engaku-ji are showing at that time the most precious art pieces to the public.

At the halfway of the road, after many raises and few descents, our steps lead us to a big park in a perfect location for a deep breathe, and why not for a nice simple lunch. ut there you go, exposed provisions are lust for fowl and the nature lovers are the targets. A surprise attack coming from the sky like a silent mirage; confiscates the victim’s delicious chicken sandwich that he was holding in his hands has soon been taken away in the air.

The robbers are obviously falcons. You can’t find any signpost warning against this kind of attack!

On the way down, you can find the Benzaiten Temple, very famous for its main activity consisting of a kind of purification ritual where you can wash your own money by immersing it into clear water. It is believed that earnings will increase and never run short. Finally, closing your long walk, there emerges the Daibutsu called the Great Buddha of Kamakura.

At the end of the day, on your way back to the station, the soba restaurant Rai Tei standing on top of the mountain close to the Daibutsu, offers a great change of scenery and a wonderful overview on a nice garden, old houses and on the Mount Fuji. We have only one thing to say: Bon Appetit!

鎌倉は初め、1192年の将軍、頼朝の領地でした。当時、 鎌倉は日本の首都でした。鎌倉時代と足柄時代の間、 鎌倉を訪れた何人かの中国人の僧の影響により、 たく さんの仏教の寺が建てられました。 過去に飛び込み、 日本の日常生活との完全な決別を探 し求めるなら、山に隠れた寺が最高の開放を提供して くれます。鎌倉駅から簡単に行くことのできる1063年 に建立された鶴岡八幡宮を除き、ほとんどの寺は深い 森に建てられ、人目につきません。 たとえ訪れた人々が 観光案内所で尋ねたとしても、そのスタッフはこの 街 の別の見方を教えること、そしてたくさんの小さなお寺 に続く小さな道がどこにあるのかを教えることができな いでしょう。 ま ず北鎌倉駅で降りて下さい。山々が素晴らしい自然 の聖域にそびえているように見える、 とてものどかな場 所です。赤い薄い織物が敷かれたベンチがいくつか 駅 に並んでいます。 そしてそこで旅行者は休むことが でき、有名な抹茶（緑茶の粉のお茶） を飲むことができ ます。 メインストリートに来ると、右側に小さな道が 見 えます。 そこには標識がありませんが、小さな坂が歩い ている人々の目を引きます。彼らはこれから山を少し登 り、寺を次々と見つけることになります。 日本 の最も古 い禅寺のひとつ、建長寺は鎌倉時代（1185-1333）の 芸術作品を保管しています。11月3日から3日間、鎌倉 市は毎年、文化の日を開催します。建長寺と円覚寺では その間最も貴重な芸術作品を一般に公開しています。 た くさんの坂を登り、いくつかの坂を下った後、道の途 中で大きな公園があります。 ここは深呼吸するのに完 璧な場所です。 おいしくてシンプルなランチをここで い かがでしょうか。 しかし、無防備な食べ物は狙われ、 自 然愛好家達は生きたターゲットに変わります。静かな 空からの奇襲により彼らが手に持っていたおいし い食 べ物は空に消えました。犯人は明らかに鷲の様な肉食 の鳥です。 この様な攻撃に関しての注意書きはどこにも ありません！ また、下り坂の道で、弁財天を見つけることができます。 ここは澄んだ水にお金を入れて洗う儀式で有名です。 そうすることにより収入が増え、お金が足りなくなること は無くなると信じられています。 そしてついに、長い道 のりの終わりに鎌倉の大仏が現れます。 その日の終わりに駅へ戻る途中、大仏の近くの山の頂 上にらい亭というそば屋があります。 そこでは景色が大 きく変わり、素敵な庭、家々、富士山を見渡すことがで きます。私たちは一言だけ言いたいです。 どうぞ召し上 がれ！

RVM : Hello, would you mind introducing yourself ?

Rina Kanoki : Yes of course, my name is Rina Kanoki RVM: I can see you are half Japanese,what about the other half ?

Rina Kanoki: I am half Japanese and half Algerian .

RVM: Have you ever been in Algeria?

Rina Kanoki: Yes, l was born and live in Algeria till age of seven.

RVM: Algerian! How do you feel as half Algerian and Japanese in Japan?

Rina Kanoki: Being in Japan I feel japanese even though I know who l really am.

RVM: l see! While living in Japan as Half Algerian and Japanese is it an handicap or advantage?

Rina Kanoki: As I said before, I feel more like a Japanese while in Japan. Life in Japan can be exciting and fun, but sometimes I want to be in Algeria.

I know I have both cultures in me and I understand both. For example, I know the Japanese culture and Algerian cuisine too.

RVM: How do Japanese considere you ? As a Japanese or as a Japanese-Algerian?

Rina Kanoki: Most of my friends see me as a Japanese, some as a half Japanese-African. One thing for sure, I m very well aware that I m not 100% Japanese.

And you know Japanese are nice people, but they are not as open as I’m and that’s my Algerian part that I struggle with.

RVM: What is your future project you would like to inform or share with the reader of the Rendez Vous Magazine?

Rina Kanoki: I really didn’t have a chance to chase my dreams as a child. Now I really want to fullfil my goals and dreams.The reason I am going back to college next year is, l would like to end up an architect.

And I would love to have my own dancing school. as a kid, I had dancing classes.I love music and dance.

RVM: Any good child hood memories?

Rina Kanoki: I still remember going to the beach with my grand-parents back in Algeria. They were always bringing a lot of delicious samdwiches. It was fun always fun.

RVM: What advice would you give to other half Japanese-Africans like you?

Rina Kanoki: Never forget who you are. To know your origins, that’ s very important.

RVM: Thanks Rina for answering and see you soon.

RVM：こんにちは。 自己紹介していただけますか？ Lina Kanoki :はい、 もちろん。私の名前はLina Kanokiで す。 RVM：半分日本人であることは分かりましたが、 もう半分 はどこですか？ Lina Kanoki:私は半分日本人で半分アルジェリア人です。

RVM:アルジェリアに行ったことはありますか？ Lina Kanoki:はい。私はアルジェリアで生まれ、7歳までそ こで育ちました。

RVM:アルジェリアですか！日本でアフリカ系日本人である ことをどう思いますか？ Lina Kanoki:私は自分が本当は誰なのか知っています が、 日本では私は日本人であると感じます。 RVM：分かりました！アフリカ系日本人として日本に住んで いるのは不利ですか？それとも有利ですか？ Lina Kanoki:先程お話しました通り、私は日本にいる間は より日本人であると感じます。 日本での生活はエキサイテ ィングで楽しいかもしれませんが、それでもアルジェリア にいたいと思う時もあります。 RVM:日本人はあなたをどう思っていますか？日本人だと 思っていますか？それとも日本人とアルジェリア人のミック スであると思っていますか？ Lina Kanoki:私の友人のほとんどは私を日本人だと思っ ていますが、半分日本人のアフリカ人だと思っている人も います。一つだけ確かなことは私は100％日本人でないと いうことをとてもよく知っているということです。 日本人は とても良い人たちですが、私の様にオープンではなく、そ れが私が苦労しているアルジェリア人の部分です。 RVM:あなたの目標と願いは何ですか？ Lina Kanoki:小 さな子どもがいたので私は夢を追うチャ ンスはありませんでした。子どもがいると人生は変わりま す。 そして今私は目標を達成し、夢を叶えたいと心から思 って います。 その為に来年私は大学に戻ります。私は自分 のダンススクールを開きたいのです。私は小さい頃ダン スのレッスンを受けていました。音楽とダンスを愛 してい ます。

RVM:子ども時代の何か良い思い出はありますか？ Lina Kanoki:アルジェリアで祖父母と一緒にビーチに行っ たのを覚えています。彼らはいつもたくさんのおいしいサ ンドイッチを持ってきてくれました。いつもとても楽しかっ たです。

RVM：あなたの様な半分日本人のアフリカ人の方々にア ドバイスはありますか？ Lina Kanoki:あなたが誰なのか忘れないで下さい。 あなた の起源を知ることはとても大切なことです。

Moseka: I’m from a suburb of Osaka. (But I feel that Tokyo is my hometown.)

RVM: Your last trip to Africa?

Moseka: ever been to Africa. Although I think I might like to go there for a honeymoon or something.

RVM: What is your best childhood memories?

Moseka: I have very few good memories of my childhood. I had quite a hard time growing up in Japanese society. One good thing is that I learned to find my own identity when I was quite young.

RVM: Then you live in Japan, how you viewed in Japanese society?

Moseka: While I was still a chrysalis, Japanese people were cruel to me. But once that chrysalis had emerged into a butterfly, people began to treat me as I was named: “Moseka”(Mademoiselle in Lingala). I don’t know what they truly think of me now, or then.

RVM: Do you feel more Japanese or more Congolese?

Moseka: Sometimes people try to categorize me, but I don’t particularly feel that I’m Japanese or Congolese. I can be both, neither one, nor the other; but actually, I don’t think about it that much. It’s as if I’m stateless; I feel quite free in that way.

RVM: Being born mix Japanese-Congolese is it a handicap or an advantage in Japan?

Moseka: I think if I try to be an typical Japanese, it can be a handicap. If I can find myself and live my own life, it can be an advantage.

RVM: What is your future project you would like to inform or share with the reader of the Rendez Vous Magazine?

Moseka: Actually, I’d just like to carry on as I am.

RVM: What election of Barack Obama President of united States inpires you ?

Moseka: In no particular way did it inspire me but I cried and jumped for joy.

RVM: Then you live in Japan, how you viewed in Japanese society?

Michael Yano: Living in Japan being half black and Japanese seems better now, I guess the Hip-Hop inspiration from the states have been a very powerful movement to the young Japanese generation.

Some half Africans seems to be telling people that they are half American.

I see the same things happening everywhere, even to pure African brothers. That’s kind of sad to me and defiantly not a good example for half African youngsters who are trying to find their identity in a still poor environment for international exchange.

But I think no matter where you go, not only about your religion or race, you are always gonna find friends and hatters.

I think it all depends on how you deal with it.

Michael Yano Japanese - Ghanaian RVM: Tell us where are you from?

Michael Yano : I was born in Accra the capital of Ghana between a Ghanian mother and a Japanese father.

RVM: Your last trip to Africa?

Michael Yano：My last trip to Africa was in 2008 to Ghana.

RVM: What is your best childhood memories?

Michael：My best childhood memories are mostly in Ghana, because coming over to Japan when I was 10years old growing up in an orphanage being a half black kid wasn’t such a beautiful story in memories left to be told. www.prsen.com

RVM: Do you feel more Japanese or more Ghanaian?

Michael Yano：I feel like double! I’m Ghanian when I’m with my Ghanian people and I’m Japanese when I’m with my Japanese people. And that’s probably because of how I grew up in both side of my roots. And I love it！...because it feels like having a free ticket going back on forth to two different cultures mentally and spiritually.

RVM: Being born mix Japanese-Ganaian is it a handicap or an advantage in Japan?

Michael Yano : Being half black was not a easy thing specially finding jobs and feeling like a new face in the zoo every time walking in public.

Although not easy, as I grew up things started to change for the better.

Now I can be a model or be in dramas but sometimes because mix people did not exist in Japan before, it is hard to be in Japanese TV dramas, so I started to find what I can have an advantage of, and that was music in my way of life in Japan.

RVM: What is your future project you would like to inform or share with the readers of the Rendez Vous Magazine?

Michael Yano：I have so much projects but one of my biggest project is to be a successful music artist to make both of my country people to be proud of me, and to be a good example to the young mix generation kids, to show them if I can make it, they can make it too.

RVM: What election of Barack Obama President of united States inpires you ?

Michael Yano：Yes it did. and I do feel a slight difference of how people look at colored people recently.

RVM: Anny messages for mix Japanese-Ghanaians?

Michael Yano：my suggestion to ya’ll is simply to be proud of yourselves and don’t let the media or anybody tell you what can’t do.

«One day when my family moved to Japan, my mother told me and my two younger brothers that she has a very important thing to tell us, she slowly opened her mouth and said to us (show me your hands) so we did as she said, and then she said (not your palm, show me the other side) we did as she said again, and she finally said to us (what do you see?) we said (our hands) she looked at us with a very strong eye and said (yes, and look at your color, in this world with your color, you are going to suffer, so be strong and be proud of it, and don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t).

I will never forget those words she told me.»

Sometimes it’s very hard and scary to face the reality in life, but sometimes it’s good to know what’s going on around to prepare your mind.

RVM: What is your dearest wish?

RVM: Tell us where are you from?

Eriko: I m a half Japanese half DR Congolese.From a father from DR Congo and a japanese mother. Born in Kinshasa and came to Japan at the age of two.

RVM: Your last trip to Africa?

Eriko: Three month ago.I was in Kenya with two of my friends and we visited some NPO and NGO’s, they showed us their activities and we learned a lot from those Japanese living in Kenya and from those who succeeded in business over there.

RVM: What is your best childhood memories?

Eriko:I went back in my country of birth at the age of 9. At that time I couldn’t speak French either Lingala, I remember playing a lot with kids, every day. My Africans aunts taught me a lot of things when I was there. Funny stories.

RVM: Then you live in Japan, how are you viewed in Japanese society?

Eriko: In Japan there is security and a lot of chance to study.But still Japan is not a global country yet.Need to open up.

RVM: Do you feel more Japanese or more DR Congolese?

Eriko: I ‘m living in Japan so I can say that I think more like a Japanese, but I know that I’m Congolese and Japanese. Sometimes I feel neither Japanese neither Congolese.

Eriko: Discrimination is the handicap. I went to a Japanese school, I remember they were no black kids in my classes. Boys were always teasing me, saying that skin is dirty, no one wanted to get close to me.That troubled me alot, but my father and mother were always telling me to be proud of who I ‘m and that made me strong.

The advantage is the originality.I think been a JapaneseCongolese has a strong individuality. I ‘m glad that sometimes people envy us (half Japanese and African) l am proud to half Japanese and DR Congolese.

RVM: What is your future project you would like to inform or share with the readers of the Rendez Vous Magazine?

Eriko: I think this new magazine will get Africa and Japan closer. Japan lack information about Africa. You can feel how far Africa is from Japan or from Japanese people. I wish Japanese will learn a lot about Africa through this magazine. It ‘s easy to read and interesting. and work in the third world.

Eriko: The rate of birth in Japan is getting lower and this mean the population is getting older. I think the young generation need to open themselves to the rest of the world.We need to study not only English and Japanese but French and other languages used in other societies.

Eriko: I want to be the bridge between Japan and Africa. I don’t know yet in which domain but for my ultimate wish, I want to work for people.

Next year will be my last year as a student, I want to go and work in the third world.

African Prov e アフリカ Dear Readers, Following your demands, we decided to create a space for “Readers opinions”, that will be launched in the December issue. All your messages and questions will be published in addition to my answers.

You will find it as well on our website: Let’s go back to the African proverb.

For this November issue, we would like to introduce the work of Marielle Trolet Ndiave, author of “White woman, black Africa”, 2005 and “The white woman’s come back in Africa”, 2010.

I would like to make a short summary of her first novel that we could compare to a precious box in which proverbs and adages are like rare pearls of wisdom that one would adorn.

Briefly: the safe comfort of a rich house, exemplary studies and a relashionship that everyone would envy. Her life was bright only from the outside. Marielle left everthing and settled by her own in a small village in Senegal: Popenguine. Story of her rebirth, being taught the traditions of a still mysterious Africa, passionately in love with a man who will become her husband. She knows how to lead us in her stories.

When reading her second novel, the most surprising adage caught our attention: “Man’s sex is called in Africa God’s pencil”.

Is man deified? Is sex sacred since God is giving himself a licence?

According to Marielle: God has got the copyrights of life. He writes life on earth using man’s pencil.

Procreation is promoted and pleasure contributes to it. I can see the high value of men’s destiny only.

What Blood Type are they ?

Dear readers, Please, would you tell me what is your blood type?

I want to talk about it in this November edition.

This is something I never paid attention to until I came to Japan. I think most people in the world don’t care that much about their blood type until they have an accident or an operation.

In Japan, whether someone is A,B, AB or O, is sometimes a topic of everyday conversation. I even heard there is a belief that blood type can determine personality or even love, work...you name it ! How many times I overheard (sorry for being indiscreet) lady talking about their choice of men according to their blood type. Blood types here is an important matter, particularly which combination is best for romance. Isn’t that amazing? I once overheard a young lady complaining about going out with a type O guy.

I have been asked many times what’s my blood type. As I never cared about it, I always said that I had no idea. As long as I wasn’t hit by a train, I won’t know what my blood type is (by the way I hate needles!).

All these blood type things were non-sense to me, until one day, through a conversation I heard a Congolese woman asking a friend of her this question: “why I hate A and C for no reason??”

Then B gave an interesting answer, that’s what he said: “These two (A and C) blood types just don’t match!!!!”

Then suddenly it hits me. We Congolese too somehow believe in these blood combination for harmony among people. Isn’t that something we share? The only difference is that Japanese are more into details. And I want to say this. The blood matching thing that the Congolese woman said isn’t a new thing or a recent discovery.

Our ancestors are the one who talked about this blood matching combination for harmony among people. This is one of the things we have in common dear friends.

Still talking about blood type. I have a question. Suppose I’m madly in love with this extremely beautiful lady, and later find out she is blood type B, a type that supposedly doesn’t match with my personality or whatever...what am I supposed to do? Follow my heart or believe in what the blood type predicts...?

Solomon & his Ethiopian Restaurant “QUEEN Sheba”

W

hen I asked Solomon, long-time owner of an authentic Ethiopian restaurant in Nakameguro, how long he had been in Japan, he points to a customer and suggests I ask him instead.

Solomon walks away and sits with the French customer after carefully pouring him a glass of white wine. From the other table he enthusiastically shouts: “You should be interviewing him!”, pointing to a man who is one of the major promoters of African music in Japan.

Though doyen of the African community in Tokyo and a living encyclopedia, the man with sparkling and playfully ironic eyes never tries to take the spotlight.

Rather Solomon wants to let food and culture do the talking, never imposing his values on Japanese people.

“I want to offer an alternative, a chance to know. I only want to introduce my culture. It’s a primal need, to show that one exists”.

He says his story is not important but mentions growing up in a small railway town of Eastern Ethiopia. A line built by the French during the industrial revolution gave him a taste of the world and what was to come. www.prsen.com

By the end of the evening I was talking with the ambassador of Eritrea and a Japanese woman, a passionate promotor of Moroccan music in Japan. A real social and cultural gap bridging experience orchestrated by Solomon.

Salsa from Cali

Evoking Africa with the uniqueness of Colombian moves

S

alsa, a rhythm that was born in New York as a result of a mixture of traditions from other regions of the world, is now recognized as one of the main cultural expressions of Latin America.

In Colombia, salsa has adopted a profound connotation that makes the rhythm a living testimony of daily lives. Cali, a city that has been labeled as the “Salsa Capital of the world” is the place where this genre has found a home to be and to evolve.

Colombian history cannot be described without referring to African and European histories.

As part of a region that was influence by these continents, Colombian cultures and traditions evoke some of the most rooted aspects of Africa.

Music is a clear example of such a fusion. It is not only the intensity of drums but the passion with which dancers devote to each song which makes a connection between nations that are intrinsically united.

Japan has been a witness of the energy of Colombian salsa. Just recently, in early November, one couple, part of one of the most relevant salsa academies of the Latin American nation, “Swing Latino”, came to Tokyo to offer performances and workshops. Besides Japan, “Swing Latino” will be touring in different Asian countries that include China, Korea and Singapore.

The couple, Nilson Castro and Daisy Roldan, made it clear why, as the country’s slogan says “Colombia is Passion”, salsa reflects that powerful magic of a music that also evokes the rhythms of Africa.
